Hinchcliffe haunted by track demons National TORONTO - James Hinchcliffe would love nothing more than to deliver a victory in front of his hometown crowd, but “some demons” at Toronto’s IndyCar track continue to haunt the Canadian. So the race car driver from Oakville, Ont., said Canadian fans might be have to be content with his three victories on other tracks this season. Hinchcliffe will race at Honda Indy Toronto next week, but says he has a love-hate relationship with the track — “I love it, it hates me.” “I’m not going to hold my breath,” Hinchcliffe said on a conference call Tuesday. “We’ve got there the last couple of years in IndyCar and been quick, but random things have taken us out of the races — contact, mechanicals, whatever. And it goes all the way back to my time in (Formula) Atlantic and Indy Lights there. “So I hate to admit it, but I’m going in with very tempered expectations. I love coming home and getting to race in front of the home crowd is unlike anything else. “Hopefully with the success we’ve had this year, we’ve given Canadian fans something to cheer for.” H e ’s g i v e n t h e m three things at least. The 26-year-old has a seriesbest three victories this season, claiming the first

of his career in the season opener at St. Petersburg, Fla., in March. *** TORONTO - In a season of upheaval at Toronto FC, Steven Caldwell is hoping to bring some stability to the struggling club. The club announced Tuesday that Caldwell has signed a deal that will keep the Scottish international defender in Toronto through the 2015 season. The permanent contract comes at the end of his loan from England’s Birmingham City. “Any club needs stability to move forward and be successful,” Caldwell said after practice as Toronto prepared to host the rival Montreal Impact on Wednesday. “We certainly need to settle on a balanced team and give the people here every chance to be successful.” Toronto has been a team in constant flux in Ryan Nelsen’s first year as manager as he tries to figure out how to build a winning culture with a team that finished with a league-worst 5-21-8 record last season. Over 20 players have been jettisoned from the team this season. The latest was 25-year-old centre back Logan Emory, who was cut loose last week. The final results for Toronto (2-8-6) haven’t been overly favourable this season as the team finds its identity, though it did enjoy a modest three-game unbeaten streak before a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

Newly Renovated TWO UNITS - $289,000 The performers of the next Souris Valley Theatre production, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. From left are Aubree Erickson, Scott Heatcoat, Rebecca Lascue and Kevin Aichele.

Relationship comedy next up at theatre The Souris Valley Theatre is bringing a little love to the Energy City. The theatre’s second performance of the season will be I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, featuring a series of vignettes dealing with a lifetime’s worth of relationships. Performances will run from July 5 to 28, Wednesday through Sunday, with matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m. Rehearsals for the show began on June 18 at the Doug Third Gymnasium. KevinAichele is an actor and musician from Saltcoats, near Yorkton, but has spent most of his adult life working in Winnipeg with a short stint in Toronto. He has only worked in Saskatchewan a few times, previously performing at Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon. “I had no idea Estevan even had a theatre until two months ago,” said Aichele during a brief break from rehearsals outside the gymnasium last week. With a small cast of four, it didn’t take long for the actors to get to know each other. Aichele had worked with Aubree Erickson previously, but the other two cast members, Rebecca Lascue and Scott Heatcoat, were strangers. “It’s nice when you have a small cast and that time is really all focused on us,” added Aichele. “It’s kind of like camp out here. That’s the only challenge sometimes. It’s so relaxing and peaceful being out in the country that

it’s hard to remind yourself, ‘Oh yeah, we’re working.’” Lascue is a Regina native, beginning her career on stage after getting her early theatre experience from Saskatchewan Express when she was growing up. She performed in Pride and Prejudice at the Globe Theatre in Regina earlier this year. She said I Love You will be a relaxing and fun atmosphere for theatregoers. “It’s definitely the kind of theatre experience that’s just fun,” she said. “The whole play is about relationships, which everyone can relate to, not just romantic relationships but those through the stages of life. It’s universal humour.” The play presents a series of vignettes detailing the quirks and realities of relationships an individual will experience throughout life rather than following a linear story from beginning to end. “It’s, kind of, progressing in a series starting with the awkwardness of dating to the end when it’s dealing with old age and looking back on your marriage,” she said. Aichele said, because of the nature of the vignettes, the play moves along very quickly and just doesn’t have any time to drag on. For each scene the actors play new and different characters, so each scene keeps things fresh for both the actors and the audience. “They’re all independent of each other but are all related to relationships.

U-

It’s fun in that way that you get to play a lot of different characters. The characters all have their unique quirks and neuroses, so it’s fun.” Lascue will play a little bit of everything throughout the production, from an awkward, nerdy girl, which she said suits her perfectly, as well as a lawyer and even a 10-year-old kid. “When you’re playing so many characters you want to figure out ways to make them somewhat different.,” she said. “Normally when you have one character you have the whole script that you can draw from to understand that character, whereas in this kind of thing you have two pages to try and get information about them. I did a lot of supplementing and sort of made up lives for each one to try to then bring into the short little scripts.” She said the singing can also be difficult because she finds it important to give each character a different singing voice, especially the vocals of a 10-year-old. “All the vignettes and all the stories, I think everyone can relate to. They’re all pretty classic themes in dealing with the horrible awkwardness of first dates and the struggles that go along with making a relationship work and last,” said Aichele. “Every scene I think people will find stuff where they can say, ‘Oh, I’ve been there.’” Lascue is particularly attached to one scene involving a couple who are new parents. Her sister gave birth shortly

after rehearsals started, so Lascue is enjoying being an aunt for the first time. “Some of the guys are like, ‘Oh yeah, that can be so strange when people are crazy (about babies),’ but that’s, kind of, me right now,” she said with a laugh. “The one I’m enjoying the most now is the one near the end,” added Aichele. “It’s an old couple that meets at a funeral, and I really enjoy that one. I just find it’s got a real sincerity and sweetness to it that I really like.” “We’re having so much fun with it that I think, if you want to just come and have fun and have a night to just enjoy life and not worry about anything, I would recommend it,” said Lascue. “I haven’t laughed so much in the last year as I have in the last two weeks with this play.” The theatre will host a special night on July 4 for sponsors, who will get the first look at the latest show to feature at Frehlick Hall. There will be a wine and cheese event following the show so sponsors can meet the cast and see all the unseen faces that work behind the scenes. There will also be some special things happening on opening night. Room By Room will be supplying two lucky lovers with a loveseat to watch the show. The comfy couch will be placed front and centre so no matter where your tickets are, you will have a chance to get uncomfortably close to the performers.

It’s better to say nothing at all Every year there are a number of new words christened by Lake Superior State University as unceremoniously banned. It doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of bothersome words. That list is released on Jan. 1 each year, but there are a number of words that are frequently used that absolutely must be stopped without the passing of another moment. We can’t wait for the end of the year to excommunicate these deformities of speech. It’s great if you want be a locavore by the letter of the law, but please stop calling the summer vacation you’ll be spending in Estevan a “staycation.” Nails on a chalkboard is an overused metaphor, but as a generally calm and balanced person, the word staycation makes me physically angry. Hearing that word makes me frustrated the same way one gets frustrated sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. It’s completely beyond my control, but I wish so much that it was. I really don’t like the word hate either, but I hate it when people talk about their staycations. What’s so good about staying at home anyway? I have a little staycation every day when I’m done work. It’s terrible! Come to think of it, let’s stop saying “locavore” as well. After letting that one

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers sit on the brain for a minute I realize that isn’t something that should ever have existed at all. I understand that it’s a great succinct way of identifying an individual as a consumer of only local things, but sometimes we just need to grow up and stop acting like we’re 12. For the Internet savvy, the most condescending word is probably “noob.” I know it looks too silly to be something to get upset about, but the intent behind the word and whom it generally comes from boils my blood. In this heat, I don’t need help with that. It’s used by the dregs of society. Dreg is coincidentally a word far too undervalued. It’s in my good books. Noob doesn’t even need to be directed at me. When any snot-nosed kid uses noob to place him or herself in a position of superiority over anyone else I need to stretch my fingers and crack them in an OCD-like pattern to keep from rage-typing right

back at these people. Idle hands are not my friends when I am staring at a vitriolic online comment with the word noob in it. It’s getting a little hot in here just thinking about these horrible terms. Then there are some words that aren’t actual words, but we use them as though they are. If you say “irregardless” to me, I’m going to correct you, and you’re going to learn exactly why that made up word makes no sense to anyone. The media is to blame for some of these words too. Our job is words and communicating them, and sometimes we get some really overblown egos, because we have the power to alter the way the world communicates. That power will go directly to some people’s heads. This all leads to the creation of buzzwords: Snopacalypse, Beliebers, that sort of thing. Marketers and advertisers are no better than we. I have a friend who hated poli-sci, which was what she studied in university. I guess if I studied it too, I would cringe at the thought of such a juvenile abbreviation for what I was spending $8,000 a year to study. If this rant has any sort of moral, it is if you must say something as crass as staycation, it’s better not to say anything at all.

Another day on the pizza farm Few things in terms of the future of agriculture will be more important than education. In this case, I am not talking about education for producers. That is an area where necessity has pushed farmers to stay current with the latest in farm technology through knowledge. As important as farmers keeping current may be, it is far less critical to the future of education than is teaching the rest of society about what it means to farm and what it takes to feed the world. For most of us these days, about as close as any of us get to a farm is looking at the fields as we drive down the highway, many of us not likely recognizing what the crops are. With so little direct farm contact, education doesn’t come from our grandfathers, or mother, telling us about wheat and milking a cow and cutting hay. Without that direct knowledge transfer that once occurred for almost everyone, in an era when we were all only a generation removed from a farm somewhere in the family, education takes on a different look. Today programs such as Education in the Classroom are vital to at least give young

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist students the basic foundation to build some understanding of agriculture. The key to teaching young students is finding a way to engage them. As a farm boy, I recall feeding a calf with a bottle, holding a small week-old piglet, riding on dad’s knee on the tractor. Those are what catch a young person’s attention, and along the way I learned that pigs create waste that you have to shovel and that chickens must be fed, but if you do that, pork chops and roast chicken will be the result too. And that brings us to a recent program launched at Yorkton, where staff with the local office of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture created the idea of a pizza farm. Rachel Kraynick, regional farm business management specialist, and Naomi Paley, regional livestock specialist, came up

with the idea of creating a hands-on learning experience for Grade 3 and 4 students based on the idea of what goes into a pizza. The pair chose pizza because it is something young students can easily relate to. Almost every student will have had a pizza, but that does not mean they recognize the wheat for the flour to create the crust is what is grown on a farm just outside the city. Or that the milk for the cheese, or pigs for the bacon, might well have originated locally as well. “For a lot of our students it was their first time out at a farm,” said Lorraine Huang, a teacher at Dr. Brass School. “The hands-on was awesome for our kids.” Megan Reminek, also a teacher at Dr. Brass, agreed few students have direct contact with farms, estimating 90 per cent of their students had not previously been on a farm. Having a chance to go out to a field and experience planting what would one day grow into the components of a pizza is one great way to engage students, and to leave them with some lasting memories, which will hopefully help spur them to wonder more about farming and to grow their knowledge on their own.

Canada locks up embassy in Egypt

National OTTAWA - Canada has shut down its embassy in Cairo as civil unrest continues to rock Egypt. “As a security precaution and to ensure the protection of all staff, we have closed our embassy in Cairo until further notice,” Rick Roth, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, said in an email. The embassy itself posted a one-line notice of closure on its website. Cairo has seen throngs of protesters in recent days demanding the ouster of embattled Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi. The country’s military is demanding that Morsi meet the demands of the mass protest, and has given him 48 hours to take action. “Canada is deeply concerned by reports of violence

in Egypt that has claimed a number of lives and left many more persons injured,” Roth wrote. “Dangerous divisions within Egypt threaten its stability and damage its longterm economic prospects.” Canada is asking all parties to remain calm and participate in the political process. The embassy is urging visitors to Egypt to exercise a high degree of caution due to what it calls the unpredictable security situation and continued demonstrations. *** CALGARY - Some homeowners are banding together in an attempt to name and shame insurance

companies that have rejected their claims for sewer backup damage following recent floods. Residents of the Elbow Park neighbourhood in Calgary say some insurance companies are approving claims while others are not — despite similar policy wording. That just doesn’t make sense to Tom Carter, who is exhausted after spending the last week gutting his finished basement of contents that were ruined by two metres of smelly sewer water. “It is disappointing. I was sick to my stomach. You think you are covered and then you find out that you are not,” Carter said Tuesday after his claim was rejected by AMA

Insurance. “The houses on either side of us are covered through other companies.” Carter, his wife Julia and two sons now must manage without their living room, spare bedroom, furnace, washer and dryer, TV and the children’s toys. The basement also needs structural and electrical repairs. The inconsistency in insurance assessments is making people angry and frustrated, he said. They wonder why an insurance adjuster from one company approves a claim for sewer backup in one home, while another adjuster from another company says no in a house next door, blaming the

sewer backup on flooding? International MADISON, Wis. - A mother and father who prayed instead of seeking medical help as their daughter died in front of them were properly convicted of homicide, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. Eleven-year-old Madeline Kara Neumann died of undiagnosed diabetes on Easter Sunday in March 2008 at her parents’ home in the central Wisconsin village of Weston. Prosecutors said her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, ignored obvious symptoms of severe illness as their daughter became too weak to speak, eat, drink or walk, choosing to pray rather

than take her to a doctor. After the girl died, Leilani Neumann told police God would raise the child from the dead. Doctors testified that the child, known as Kara, would have had a good chance of survival if she had received medical care, including insulin and fluids, before she stopped breathing. Marathon County prosecutors charged the couple with second-degree reckless homicide. Separate juries convicted them in 2009. They each faced up to 25 years in prison, but a judge instead ordered them to each serve a month in jail every year for six years, with one parent serving every March and the other every September.
