Cancer Society provides lots of options The lead up to this year’s Relay for Life is now underway, following a Survivors’ Tea last Thursday evening and the official kickoff Saturday. The relay will be held June 9 at the Civic Auditorium, and to get things started, relay organizers invited local cancer survivors and their families to sit in on the tea at the Taylorton Room and listen to a couple of speakers. Debra Polischuk attended the tea from the Canadian Cancer Society branch in Regina. She talked about the importance of every dollar that is donated and what that money goes to. During her address, she found that many there didn’t know about how many opportunities there are for people diagnosed with cancer when they require services from the cancer society. She said she always hears people saying they didn’t know about services, like financial assistance and peer supports. “If we leave here with nothing else tonight, it’s to be able to share with somebody the services we provide,” said Polischuk. Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada with a client advocate. “If you need someone to help you get through the bureaucracy of the cancer journey, if you’re running into problems, Sue is the person you can call. She will literally take your hand and walk you step by step by step through the process.” If someone is denied disability insurance or if treatment is taking too long, the client advocate can go through the process and there is legal advice available as well through that program. “Sometimes for some people who might have an unusual or obscure diagnosis, or I think sometimes insurance companies

Debra Polischuk of the Canadian Cancer Society addressed the attendees of the Relay for Life Survivor’s Tea last week, informing the group of many of the services available to cancer patients thanks to donations raised by the annual Relay for Life walks. through work can be a little bit hard-nosed,” Polischuk said. “Sometimes they need somebody to talk to them about what compassion is.” Last year, 11 people in the southeast area had to go for treatment in Regina but couldn’t afford it, she said. “The dollars that you raised assisted those people in getting to and from treatment, or it provided accommodation for them while they were staying in Regina for radiation treatment.” About $248,000 was spent on people in Saskatchewan for these kinds of services. Polischuk said many people are doing just fine financially before they start receiving cancer treatments. Taking 40 to 50 trips to the major centres in Saskatchewan often takes
a toll on cancer patients, particularly those who are older and on fixed incomes. “Many times people will go to Saskatoon or Regina for radiation, and we will pay for their stay, the full stay at the lodge,” she said. “That’s what your relay dollars provide, and it’s huge.” Another service is the peer support program. This year’s Relay for Life co-chair Carol Cundall is a peer support. “I have a friend who is going through cancer,” said Polischuk. “She had a peer support worker during the first course of her treatment. That peer support worker from my friend’s own words, understood and knew her better than any best friend could because nobody else can understand the feeling because they’ve
never been through it. Nobody else can understand what chemo feels like and how you come out the other end of chemo.” The peer support volunteers are matched up on as many points as possible, including what type of cancer, what stage the person is at, what age and even whether or not they live in urban or rural areas. “There’s encouragement and love offered and support,” added Polischuk. “You can get up and do it again and you can keep going. I’m OK, so you’re going to be OK. These are all the things that my girlfriend was told by her peer support volunteer.” There are other programs as well, like the volunteer driver program, with a number of drivers who take people to and from wherever they need to be during the course of their treatment. “Over the years, all of the milestones the society has made, come from all the people that have been dedicated and committed to eradicating cancer,” she added. With the money raised from initiatives like Relay for Life, Polischuk said people diagnosed with cancer can get the help they need.

Sports stars are generally like you and me, except with incredible ability. When an athlete breaks and sets new records spanning their entire career, the benchmarks become the new definition of greatness, but measuring greatness between sports can be a little tricky. I’ve read recently about Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricketer who recorded his 100th century. If you know as much about cricket as I do, I’ll explain. A century is when an individual batter scores 100 runs in a single inning. I had to look it up too. Tendulkar has done it in his career 100 times, 29 more times than the second-place sitter. When feats like this are accomplished, the conversation inevitably starts about whom the greatest athlete of all time is. The better discussion is probably which athlete was the most dominant at his or her sport. Tendulkar, like Wilt Chamberlain, has the number 100 to his name, after Chamberlain’s 100-point basketball game. That number is memorable and sleek. Wayne Gretzky is certainly part of the discussion, if not the frontrunner, but he has more forgettable numbers, like 50 in 39, 92 and 2,857. After a bit of searching I did find Gretzky’s 100
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers record, scoring exactly 100 regular season and playoff goals in a single campaign, so I guess all the best have something to do with 100. Looking back at sports’ history books there are some accomplishments that can’t go unnoticed, but to be truly dominant, an athlete has to keep it up for an entire career. The season that Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double each game over the course of the 1961-62 season is one of the most dominant seasons in all of sports, but he doesn’t have anything on Michael Jordan in terms of a career. MJ posted a career 30.1 points per game and 866 consecutive games of 10 or more points. Jordan won a scoring title the same year he won defensive player of the year, something Gretzky never did. Looking back at Tendulkar however, his century record is 41 per cent
better than the second-place player. Gretzky, even for how dominant he was, scoring more assists in a career than anyone else has points, his career point totals are only 34 per cent better than No. 2 Mark Messier. Tendulkar is still dominating the second greatest cricket player of all time seven per cent more than Gretzky was able to better his closest competition. The greatest athlete is a tough one to measure, but dominance is a whole other thing that can very clearly be measured with math that even I can do. These numbers are tough for me to swallow because I still think The Great One was more dominant in hockey, despite the discrepancy in those numbers. Maybe it’s because I don’t know enough about cricket. I respect it as a sport, understanding it takes just as much skill, precision and dedication as hockey, but there’s something about Gretzky’s numbers that boggle my mind. Maybe if I were a die-hard cricket fan I wouldn’t be able to comprehend Tendulkar’s 100 th century. Either way, I’m considering suggesting to Gretzky that he change his nickname to The Dominant One. Dominance is better than greatness.
Agriculture credits immune from chopping block? In the recent provincial election, the government may have subtly been sending a message that continuous grants over the long term are a thing of the past. If you attended the recent Yorkton Film Festival, many attendees might suggest the message was not even all that subtle. The industry took a full volley broadside hit when the budget announced the almost immediate cut of the Film Employment Tax Credit. That cut is being pointed to as the impetus of an exodus of film industry talent from Saskatchewan, with some suggesting the complete demise of the sector. While that dark a future for the film industry may not transpire, it is a major shift in terms of provincial funding, and runs counter to what happens in almost every provincial jurisdiction. Walk from the Gallagher Centre where the film festival was held down to the stabling area of the Cornerstone Raceway and you will find a more desperate story. The province has also announced it will no longer provide a grant which for decades has been used to support purses for standardbred and thoroughbred rac-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ing in the province. In the case of standardbred racing, most of the horses are at a level where they have limited, if any, alternate places they could competitively race. If an alternate funding system can’t be cobbled together in the next 10 months, the sector will be dead, and many of the horses likely headed down a road they won’t return from. So what do film and horse racing have to do with agriculture? In this case, their fate may be the herald of what could be coming down the road. If the government has philosophically decided the government’s role should not be supporting sectors that continually rely on grants to survive, agriculture might want to pay attention. Farming turns to government for grants on a rather regular basis, and historically has been rather reliant on
that support. As an example, think about crop insurance where government is a participant in cost sharing the program. While some might suggest that is not a grant, most would say that is semantics. The government puts money in annually. And cost sharing doesn’t exactly change things, since filmmakers have other funding sources besides the tax credit, and horse racing generates some of the funds that flow back through a tax of monies wagered. Others might note that through programs such as crop insurance, the government not only supports farmers, but also supports farm suppliers and other business since the money rolls quickly through the economy. The racehorse sector and film industry can point to the same economic stimulation. So while no one in government has even hinted agriculture grants/subsidies are on the cut agenda, it does beg the question why they are seen as different from those cut in the budget? It certainly is a question that filmmakers and racehorse owners must be asking as they see their industries threatened by recent decisions.

Do you favour uncontrolled intersections?
He She He She Said Said By: Jordan Baker
Some of us, myself included, have no experience with the dreaded thing lurking invisibly at several intersections in Estevan. These uncontrolled intersections with no signage are completely dangerous and unnecessary. I’ve never lived in a community that has these unmarked intersections, so the first time, and all subsequent times, I’ve driven through them in Estevan, I was incredibly shocked. I remember driving up to an intersection and continuing through because there was no stop sign. I thought all was well until as I was passing through, I noticed there was no sign for the streets running perpendicular to mine. I just brushed it off, thinking I must have just not seen the signs that in fact must have been there. Then I drove through it again, probably a few days later, and as I drove through with the expectation that I would confirm the erection of a stop sign, I again saw absolutely nothing where a sign on any other reasonable street corner would have been. Even after the second time sailing through unimpeded, I still thought I was just missing the skinny sign. Surely there couldn’t be an intersection that just allowed everyone to drive through without any regulation. I’ve been through the intersection several times now, and a number of others at places all over Estevan. I still don’t get how these exist. I’ve been to places that don’t have stop signs or any other signs. Everyone stops because everyone knows to stop at all intersections. It works for them because there is no guesswork; motorists simply stop at all of them. The uncontrolled intersections around here are a crapshoot. It’s impossible to tell which intersection you are approaching is a two-way stop for the other street allowing you to safely proceed through, and which intersection has no signs and will just quietly smile to itself when you T-bone another car. I’ve heard defenders of them say they are supposed to be treated like a four-way stop. There’s nothing stopping anybody from putting up four stop signs on these corners so everyone knows that inside joke. The only appropriate, uncontrolled fourway intersection is a roundabout. These other uncontrolled corners are dangerous, senseless and have no business being on our roadways.

I’m a fan of uncontrolled intersections, in fact, so long as they’re put in the right places. I don’t see anything wrong with them, especially in smaller communities. There isn’t enough traffic to really need every single person to stop at an intersection. We’re all reasonable human beings who are capable of yielding to the person on the right. We see other vehicles; we don’t want to harm ourselves or others. It’s the same as yielding to pedestrians or behaving accordingly at any other intersection. That stop sign can’t physically stop your car from moving at an intersection (unless you hit it), but you stop because you know it’s the right thing to do, and you don’t want a ticket. There’s the whole rush of knowing you have the power to drive straight through an intersection after paying only the necessary attention. If you can see there are no vehicles approaching, even if you’re half a block away, you can drive on through. Of course, busy areas have no business having uncontrolled intersections. Downtown Regina at 5 p.m. needs every traffic light it can get. But in small towns or small cities, the traffic isn’t that busy. I can’t remember ever seeing an intersection without some sort of signage in Regina. Maybe people in smaller centres are just smart enough to get around without needing stop and yield signs at every turn?

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2012
The neighbour saga continues: the new guy To those of you who are just tuning in now, I used to have the loudest neighbours in the history of the universe. They would come home at all hours and blast their music and be super drunk. They dedicated all of Tuesday afternoon to shouting at their video game systems, and at each other. As well, the couple that occasionally shared the room above me had no interest in discretion at all. I’m pleased to report that the noisy boys who used to live above me have left. They wrapped up finals and called it quits. So the apartment above me spent several weeks empty and blessedly silent. It was great. I could go to sleep at any hour, no matter which day of the week it was, and without the risk of being woken up by shouting, shrieking or squeaking. However, things have
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me changed and definitely not for the better. We have a new roommate, who, from what I’ve gathered, is single and living on his own in the two-bedroom apartment. At first glance, he seemed like a perfectly normal and respectable young man. With short, dark hair, moderate height and no apparent vehicle, I kind of assumed he’d be chill and keep silently to himself. This is not that case. I’ve been woken up several times since he, who I mentally call Spike, moved in a couple of weeks
ago. He never makes noise during the day; I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s sleeping. But at 2 a.m., when the rest of the world is quietly sleeping or at least keeping to themselves, Spike strikes. Not only does he crash into every piece of furniture in his apartment, he seems to crash into them with a saw. Yes, a saw. Spike, from what I can tell by angrily staring at my bedroom ceiling in the dark when I can’t sleep thanks to the ruckus, is an avid carpenter. And his greatest joy is shaping building
materials in the middle of the night. And he has no concern for those he may be keeping awake with his antics, namely me (and my roommate Chelsea, who could probably sleep through the fire alarm). I like to spend my awake time imagining that Spike is building dollhouses, or maybe even a boat, like Gibbs on NCIS. That would be cool. If he was donating those dollhouses
to charities or maybe was honouring a dead parent with the coolest boat ever, I could forgive Spike for his rowdiness if that was the case. But I think the truth is that I’m stuck with yet another brutal, loud neighbour and in for yet another great year of listening to all kinds of things I don’t want to hear. It’s time to start planning how to drive Spike out of this building, and

Cancer survivor shares story at Relay event There is one lesson in particular that cancer has taught this Estevan woman: use sunscreen. The Relay for Life’s Survivors’ Tea was held Thursday evening at the Taylorton Room, and local can-
cer survivor Marilyn Coates was welcomed as the relay’s honourary chairperson. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma, the most severe kind, in 1999. “Use sunscreen. (It’s) very important. In our day

we didn’t have sunscreen, it wasn’t important. We didn’t know anything about it,” said Coates. “I grew up at the lakes and remember many, many times being burnt as a child and as a teenager.” With the sun’s rays even
stronger now than before, she said, everyone needs to practise even greater caution. She added that when it comes to skin cancer, the disease can take years before it appears. “The malignant melanoma that I had took 10 to 30 years to show up, and it can show up any time again. You just don’t know when it’s going to hit you.” The best defence, aside from staying indoors, is sunscreen, and now Coates is somewhat of an advocate for the protective lotion. “Use sunscreen, especially on your children and those grandchildren.” As the honourary chair for this year’s Relay for Life, it’s Coates’first involvement in the relay, and she said it’s the start of something good for her. With her role, she has decided to preach vigilance, ensuring everybody takes the time to identify possible warning signs on their bodies. “Don’t take it for granted that any little spot on your body is nothing. Keep watching that spot, and if you find it changing, get it checked because it can happen really fast.” By the time she first asked her doctor to investigate a mole on her neck, it had already grown severe. “When I found out I had malignant melanoma, I walked into my doctor’s office and I had a little mole, just a little speck on my neck,” said Coates. “It was kind of cute, I thought.” The mole was about the size of a pinhead, but it was growing. “I never really realized that it was growing. I kind of
Congratulations!
Marilyn Coates is this year’s Relay for Life honourary chairperson. She spoke about dealing with melanoma at the Survivor’s Tea last week. just thought it was a beauty mark, I guess, but it was never there before.” She told her doctor to check it, so it came off right away and tested positive as Stage 4 melanoma. “They didn’t get it all,” she said of the mole’s removal. “It attacks your vital organs first, so you have no idea how fast it’s going to hit you” Carol Cundall is the Relay for Life co-chair and introduced Coates last Thursday. She is also a peer supporter with the Canadian Cancer Society and said she was connected with a woman who shared Coates’ diagnosis. “She was terrified, and it gives me pause to think of what Marilyn went through because the treatment for melanoma is not the same treatment as you get for a lot of the cancers. You don’t get the chemo. (The treatment involves) cutting it out, but you can’t cut everything out.”
Coates shared with the group at the Survivors’ Tea what the unique treatment for melanoma is like. “They just go in deeper and wider and keep cutting. It was like, ‘I don’t care how big the scar is, just keep cutting until you get it all.’” She said she has been cancer free for the past 12 years without experiencing anymore “big episodes,” as she called them. “It must have been terrifying,” added Cundall. “I think of what (Coates) went through, and she’s been fighting and surviving cancer since then.” Coates recently shaved her head in honour of her father who died of cancer last year, and has raised more than $2,000 since the cut. She thought she could raise maybe $500, thinking every little bit counts. “Marilyn was always so positive and upbeat. Her motto was that if she can help one person, it will be worth her while,” Cundall said of Coates’ fundraising with her shaved head. Coates is continuing to accept donations until the Relay for Life on June 9 and is hoping maybe she can get closer to $3,000. She even put out the offer to get in touch with her if anyone wants to shave their head with her next year. “It just feels good to be part of something so wonderful,” Coates said. “It’s all about what’s important in our lives, and it does come down to just your family and your supporters. That is what life is all about, and we live our whole lives sometimes and never get to know that.”

Escaping the EI trap 1999 was a pretty good year. I was 24-years-old, in the prime of my life. Too bad I wasted half of it. I would also waste a good chunk of 2000, too, as well as 2001. In those days, I was a big-inch pipeliner, building pipelines that were transcontinental in nature. Most of the work was on 36-inch pipe, of the same scale as the beleaguered Keystone XL. For generations, this was union work. That would prove to be a blessing in most cases, but not all. One of those cases was how the union hiring process worked. You were put on a hiring list. When you rose to the top of the list, you would get a call when the next job came up. On big projects, everyone would get a call. In the meantime, you waited for that call. It meant becoming an early adopter of cellphones, because missing the call from the union hall meant missing out on tens of thousands of dollars in potential wages. The hiring list also meant that the union was considered to be doing your job search for you, when it came to qualifying for unemployment benefits. You didn’t have to go out and drop off resumes each week. You signed in on the list each month, and waited for the call. Pipelines are cyclical work. I came into the business during a hectic time. But that still meant six months between the Enbridge Terrace B expansion and the Alliance Pipeline – a project for which I was one of the first ones hired and last ones laid off. In the meantime, I collected employment insurance. Since I knew a big job paying huge wages and subsistence pay was coming, I didn’t look for a job. I spent a fair bit of time working on an en-
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile trepreneurial project that eventually failed but was not a “real job.” A lot of time was spent in my apartment, playing computer games. Since I didn’t have any real money, I also didn’t go anywhere or do anything. I crawled out of bed at 1 p.m., and back into bed around 3:30 a.m. The time in between was largely wasted. I was caught in the EI trap – enough money was coming in the door to get by, yet there was no motivation to actually be productive. In the meantime, my selfesteem plummeted to some of its lowest depths. At the beginning of the Alliance project, we were told there would be 16 months of solid work. That turned into a fallacy, as we were laid off for freeze-up in November and went back to work in late January. I got sick in February and was laid off until June. Those 16 months ended up missing over five months, all of which ended up with me collecting pogey, yet again. At the conclusion of the job in September 2000, I again went on EI. There was another project coming up in the summer of 2001, so I really wasn’t motivated to work for low wages when I could collect EI until the big job came along. The problem was, the big job only lasted two days. I tried to “break out” as an excavator operator on an elite-level job, when I really didn’t have the lower-level experience I thought I had. Being too big for my britches in assessing my own skill level, I got sent home. My savings exhausted, I now had to find
a real job. I floated around on short-term work and eventually took a job at a newspaper for half the pay rate but year-round work. In the early stages of the EI trap, I convinced myself I was working on my virtual reality training simulator. But in later years, that project had died, and I essentially bummed around. I could have worked but was not motivated to do so. The system was structured in such a way that it allowed me to get away with it. I was so sickened by the experience, when it came time for me to take parental leave five years ago with our second child, I didn’t even apply for EI. I didn’t want it. Instead, I did photography work while on leave. Looking back 10 to 14 years, I realized I totally pissed away more than two years of the best years of my life being an unproductive slob, collecting EI. It kept the wolf from the door, but it also allowed me to play the system. I’m not the only one. Atlantic Canadians are arguably the worst. The system allows them to work the lowest number of hours and extract the maximum amount of benefit. A few months ago, I talked to a company that has structured their workforce around Newfies flying in on a rotational basis, getting their hours in, and then seeing these workers going off and collecting EI. The gang of Newfies I spoke to had worked for almost every company in that line of work, together as a group,
only to move onto another in short order after they had collected their hours and then their pogey. It is absolutely absurd that we have thousands of jobs unfulfilled in Western Canada now, and yet instead of attracting Easterners, we have to send our premier to Ireland on a trade mission to seek workers. As an epilogue, my work ethic would change dramatically once I escaped the EI trap. Since then, it’s a rare month where I collect cheques from fewer than four difference sources. They may not be much, but they all help. There’s room to change the EI system, if only to get people motivated to actually get off of it. As they say, the best social program is a job. Multiple cars set ablaze in Oxbow, Alameda Multiple car fires in Oxbow and Alameda overnight between May 17 and 18 have the Carnduff RCMP detachment looking for a culprit.
A report first came in at around 4 a.m. directing authorities to investigate two vehicles on fire behind the former Oxbow high school. The fires were
extinguished, and it was determined the scorched 2003 Pontiac Grand AM had been stolen from Alameda. The second vehicle, a 2003 GMC Envoy
was taken from a residence in Oxbow. The RCMP were still on scene at the fire in Oxbow when they were called to another vehicle
that was set ablaze by the elementary school in Alameda. That call was around 4:30 a.m. This vehicle was a 2009 Ford F-350 Super Duty, which Constable Luke Kaley of the Carnduff RCMP noted was stolen from a business site in Oxbow. Kaley said they’ve seen cars stolen and then dumped in fields before, but having three cars set on fire in one night is something new. “It’s kind of out of the ordinary,” he added. The vehicles were all stolen late on May 17 or
early May 18. There was also a break and enter that same night at the Alameda Elementary School, with the culprits leaving minimal damage done inside. An undisclosed amount of cash was also taken. Kaley said it’s assumed all incidents are related. The RCMP is continuing to investigate the matters. Kaley asked anyone with information to call the Carnduff RCMP detachment at 306-482-4400 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

NATIONAL OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says the caseload in youth courts fell seven per cent in 2010-2011, a second straight annual drop. The agency says youth courts handled about 52,900 cases last year, involving more than 178,000 charges. Meanwhile, adult criminal courts completed nearly 403,000 cases in the same year, involving about 1.2 million charges. The adult caseload was virtually the same as the previous year following three consecutive annual increases. The number of youth court cases fell in every province except Manitoba, where it was up three per cent from the previous year. These declines were offset by increases elsewhere, including Saskatchewan, where cases rose five per cent and Ontario, which had a two per cent increase. *** TORONTO - Ontario’s governing Liberals are under pressure to require sprinklers in all retirement homes after a fire at a seniors’ home near Ottawa killed an elderly couple. The couple died Fri-
day after a blaze broke out at a Hawkesbury seniors’ home. The local fire chief confirmed there were no sprinklers in the facility. The coroner’s report called for retroactive installation of sprinklers in facilities for vulnerable people like retirement homes — a recommendation the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs wants implemented as soon as possible. *** MONTREAL - Quebec’s controversial protest law is set to face its first challenge in court. Lawyers representing student federations and other groups will be in Quebec Superior Court today seeking to have certain parts of Bill 78 suspended. It’s one of two legal motions filed last week against the emergency law adopted earlier this month to crack down on recent student protests. The first motion, to be heard beginning today, seeks to suspend sections of the law that involve public protest. The second motion is to have Bill 78 declared invalid altogether and it will be heard at a later date.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2012
Lunch Lady and Taxi Mum Well, the school year is almost over. Seriously, in our home, the countdown is on, and I’m so ready for the end-of-year parties to start. I’ve calculated, from today until the end of the term, I have 66 lunches to make, countless loads of laundry (no point even counting because it never ends) and approximately 46 round trips from home to school. This doesn’t include the three days a week my son needs to be at school at 7 a.m. for basketball and volleyball practices. If I were to include those, that would mean my round trips to school would be more like 61 and that just seems like a lot and I, like many other parents, feel like I’m being shifted to auto-pilot. This morning was one of those early morning volleyball practices that my son needed to get to. I actually love these mornings because it means just the two of us and the early morning routine. We operate like a well-oiled machine, all in an effort to get him to the practice on time. As I was driving him, I was quietly making my calculations as I thought of the end of the year. I was wondering what I could do
Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life to “spice up” lunches and not allow myself to fall into the “lazy” or “unhealthy” category. I was pondering the back and forth car rides and if my auto-pilot light was switched on. Although I enjoy the early mornings with him, I was/ am tired and I’m ready for the lazy summer days that are within reach. I know many parents know what I’m talking about ... Taxi Mum and Taxi Dad. Constantly going from one thing to the other. I have come to understand and appreciate why my parents chose to raise us in small town Saskatchewan. We could walk everywhere, the to and fro for our parents looked very different than mine. As we approached the school, I could tell my son was getting excited. He loves both volleyball and basketball and he loves learning new skills. He sat
beside me in the front seat (he’s just recently graduated to the front which is exciting), full of confidence and ready to face the day. He had his school bag firmly in his hand and his lunch in the other. His gym clothes were on and his uniform neatly tucked in another bag that he was managing. As we reached the front door of the school and he made his way out of the car, he turned to me and said, “Thanks for driving me Mum, thanks for getting up and making sure I get here. It’s really nice of you.” With that, my heart melted and every calculation I made seemed to melt away. Did he sense my thought pattern? Did he notice the fatigue through our conversation? I wonder what prompted him to graciously thank me, this morning, for something I’ve done week after week
after week? I looked at him, with wonder and love in my eyes and heart and replied, “My darling boy, I would wake at any hour and drive you anywhere. I’m so proud of who you are and thank you for saying thank you. It means a lot.” With that he gave me his signature smile, a smile that has captivated me for 11 years. So friends, like many of you, there is one more month of school left and I’m reminded that “it’s not how you start, rather it’s how you finish.” I’m choosing to finish strong, I’m turning the auto-pilot off and weaved between work and every other demand on life right now, I choose to remain a strong Lunch Lady and Taxi Mum. To all the other parents out there ... good luck and enjoy these last days before we launch into summer.

How predictable: Kings, Devils in cup final My record as a prognosticator is not good. Back in 1963, I remember telling friends that those four lads from Liverpool had a pretty good beat and great haircuts, but would never make it big with a silly name like the Beatles. The Leafs, I predicted, would win at least five Stanley Cups in a row after taking the top prize in 1967. There would be longlasting peace in the Middle East, I remember saying. The Internet? It’ll never catch on, was my 1994 assertion. So it comes with great surprise that on the eve of the Stanley Cup final between the New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings, I hearken back to a column written in mid-October last year, as the NHL season was just beginning when the prediction was there in black and white (you can look it up ) that the L.A. Kings would win the Cup. “Kings poised for NHL crown” was the headline on the Oct. 17 column. The words posited a logical scenario where the goaltending of Jonathan Quick, the improving defence led by Drew Doughty and a passel of offensive stars, led by Anze Kopitar and the summertime acquisition Mike Richards, would allow the Kings to finally put it all together. “ ... the biggest blockbuster hit in Hollywood (next June) could be Stanley himself on parade down Wilshire Boulevard” was how the column ended. So how did that work out? For most of the season,
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist
it looked – as usual – like a prediction about as accurate as the ones detailed in paragraph one above. The Kings were so-so all year, scaring only their coach, Terry Murray, who was eventually fired mid-season while the Kings sat in the middle of the Western Conference pack - or lower - for most of the year. But after Darryl Sutter took over as coach just before Christmas, the Kings started looking like a contender. In the final week, they squeezed into the final playoff spot in the West and then started playing like the Habs of 1959 or the Oilers of 1983. Now, here they are in the Cup final and playing the sixth-best team from the Eastern Conference, the Devils. How predictable, right? • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “Tiger Woods says he can win on the PGA Tour into his 50s. The only question is whether he can do it in his 30s and 40s.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Donovan McNabb is reportedly trying to get into shape by throwing balls in the ocean. Just like Tim Tebow, only on purpose.” • Currie again: “Sharp Electronics of Japan introduced the Cocorobo vacuum that not only drives itself, but can talk. Lately, mine keeps saying, ‘If you think I suck, try watching Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda.’ • Scott Ostler, San Francisco Chronicle: “From
The Bra Lady Is Coming To Size You Up
Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, The Bra Lady, comes in.
Chapman is coming to ESTEvan on TUESdaY, jUnE 12Th to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman says “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? Do you overflow the cup of your bra? Do your bra straps dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.
You’ve tried all the rest - now try the best!! Cindy Beaulieu

But Bud Selig and his crew are about to make a momentous decision on banning the move where the pitcher bluffs a pickoff throw to third, wheels and bluffs to first.” • Financial news from Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Talk about astronomical: Houston’s Astrodome cost $35 million in 1965 to build. It would cost $70 million to demolish it now.” • Blogger Chad Picasner, after Indians reliever Chris Perez got a standing ovation from the home crowd after ripping the team’s poor attendance: “Afterwards, Perez graciously thanked the fans - individually.” • Headline at SportsPickle.com: “Lone awake juror to decide Roger Clemens’ fate.” • Len Berman of ThatsSports.com, on Tommy John’s 69th birthday: “Do young people know he was a pitcher and not an orthopedic surgeon?” • Ostler again: “Russian government officials, reeling from the country’s poor performance at the Winter Olympics two years ago, have banned vodka and wine for athletes and others during the Olympics at four Russian hospitality houses. Or, as they are now called, rehab centres.” • New Orleans Saints plan to leave an empty seat on team flights and in meeting rooms to honour suspended coach Sean Payton. Wrote Scott Ostler: “If you want to honour Payton on team flights, offer a bounty for tripping the flight attendant when she comes down the aisle with the drinks.” • Blogger Gary Bachman: “Michael Vick and his fiancée, Kijafa Frank, are set to marry on June 30 in Miami Beach, Fla. The couple are registered at PetSmart.” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “A jersey worn by Babe Ruth sold for $4.4 million. Apparently it still has a mark on it from when the Babe was hit by a pitch from Jamie Moyer.” • Ian Hamilton of the Regina Leader-Post: “Los Angeles Lakers teammates Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant are co-owners of a horse that is to race for the first time today at Hollywood Park. With those two in his stable, the horse is doomed to finish last: It’ll be too soft for its size and it won’t be willing to pass anything.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

Tip of the Week
The Estevan City Police would like to remind the residents of the following regarding PEDESTRIAN SAFETY. Pedestrian Safety is for ALL ages. Unfortunately, in trafďƒžc accidents involving pedestrians and motorists, it is the pedestrian who suffers, often with tragic results. In many cases it is not the driver’s fault. It is the responsibility of both driver and pedestrian to ensure each others safety by the following some simple rules. PEDESTRIAN: Cross at marked crosswalks or trafďƒžc lights, not in the middle of the block or between parked cars; -make sure drivers see you before you cross; -Cross when trafďƒžc has come to a complete stop; At a trafďƒžc light, cross at the beginning of a green light. Do not cross once the “Don’t walkâ€? signal begins to ďƒ&#x;ash or once the light has turned yellow. NEVER cross on a red light; -Watch for trafďƒžc turning at intersections or entering and leaving driveways; -Wear bright or light-coloured clothing or reďƒ&#x;ective strips, when walking in dusk or darkness. MOTORIST: Be patient, especially with older pedestrians who need more time to cross the road; -Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning; -Remember, stay alert and slow down on residential streets and through school zones. Fines for these offences (motorists or pedestrians) range from $70.00-$230.00. AS A PARENT OR CAREGIVER: -Teach and reinforce the proper techniques for crossing the road safely with your child. -Stress the importance of walking on the inside of the sidewalk, or where there are no sidewalks, as far away as possible from the travelled portion of the road: -Stopping before the edge of the sidewalk at all times; -Being alert and stopping at driveways and where there are no curbs. Thank you, Cst D STEPHANY #44 Estevan Police Service

Spring Home & Garden
Eco-friendly hardwood floors healthy home trend (NC)—The “healthy homeâ€? movement has become more than just a decorating fad. It marks a major shift in the priorities and ideologies of consumers who are now making concerted efforts to seek out eco-friendly and healthconscious decor choices for their homes. Innovative designers and manufacturers have caught on to this reality and are now giving consumers more options for healthy materials for their homes. The fact is more and more information is written about the negative impact of environmental toxins on our health. Many of us aren't aware, unless we have allergies or a child with allergies, that paint odours, stains and chemicals used in manufacturing can make us sick. Making home environments healthier has become a prime concern with homeowners, as shown by the demand for low VOC paints, stains and materials, as well as natural wood cabinets, furniture and oorings. Certain manufacturers are more than answering the call for healthier, ecofriendly home decor options by setting new trends in “greenâ€? product innovation. Mercier Wood Flooring, one of North America's leading hardwood ooring manufacturers, is setting the tone in the home decor category with its latest eco-flooring innovation that is so healthy and ecofriendly that it actually was awarded the “Children and School certificationâ€? by world-renowned standards organization Greenguard
“At Mercier we have long recognized this trend and have made eco-friendliness a core value ever since our ďŹ rst day,â€? explained Michel Collin, Director of Marketing for Mercier Wood Flooring. “This is why we are so proud of our Greenguard Generations 'Children and School' certiďŹ ed ooring, Mercier's next generation of ooring.â€? Made using 100 per cent pure soybean oil, this revolutionary new factoryďŹ nished ooring boasts zero volatile organic compounds (VOC's) is hypoallergenic and offers a comprehensive 35-year warranty. Available in all species, colors and ďŹ nishes, Collin added that with this new product innovation you can create a natural wood oor that offers both a distinct character to your dĂŠcor, as well as a healthy, eco-friendly choice for your entire family. “We feel our Generation Greenguard ooring answers the need parents have to create healthy living environments
in their homes for their children.â€? The Greenguard Children and Schools CertiďŹ cation Program offers stricter certification criteria for products intended for use in schools, daycares or other environments where children spend signiďŹ cant periods of time. The reason is children are more sensitive to environmental exposures than adults because their bodies and brains are still developing. They breathe faster than adults and in return receive a higher dose of indoor pollution per body weight, which is why products like Mercier's Generation Greenguard ooring is such a welcome option for discerning homeowners and their families. Ideal for kids' rooms, living rooms, daycares, schools and playrooms, this new generation of ooring is a key step in the process of creating the ideal healthy home. More information on the latest trends in wood ooring is available at www. mercierwoodooring.com.

Spring Home & Garden
The best fence for your yard (NC)—Defining the limits of your property is important for a variety of reasons, including privacy, security and safety. “Ultimately, the fence has to fit with how you use your yard,” says Margie Spence, a broker with Royal LePage Niagara Real Estate, in St. Catharines, Ontario. “The challenge comes in finding something that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing,” she adds. Spence recommends reviewing these three scenarios to determine where your fencing needs may fit: 1. Privacy. If you are looking to create more privacy for your home,
solid wood fences are a good option. Most fences built for privacy stand about six feet high. They are available in varieties of wood types, with cedar and spruce being the most popular. Lattice-tops can add aesthetic appeal, and a myriad of building designs are available. Ask your local building centre for wood fence and gate design ideas or do some research online. 2. Safety. For backyards with pools, a fence with limited horizontal rails is recommended. This will ward off trespassers from using the fence as a ladder to get into the pool area. Also, a gate with a spring latch
is a bylaw requirement in most municipalities. Black aluminum fencing is typically produced with vertical spindles, often emulating wrought iron design, and provides good sight lines for pool areas. 3. Security. Keeping children or pets safe in the yard is paramount for any family. Chain-link fencing is strong, reliable, and affordable. Whether you have a dog that jumps or one that digs, chain-link fences can be built to suit the needs of your pet. Although it is one of the less aesthetically appealing options, chain-link fencing lends to safety and won't break your budget.

Lawn care success (NC)—Watering alone will not provide your lawn with the sufficient nutrients needed to grow a sturdy, healthy root system. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the primary nutrients that enhance plant development. They are also the three main components of most fertilizers. Nitrogen is a key element in protein, and like the human body, plants require it to grow. Phosphorus is the plant world's equivalent of carbohydrates – it provides energy for plants to prosper. Potassium is a mineral that helps plants fight stress and disease. It aids with strong stalks, in the same way that calcium gives people strong
bones. When properly applied, all fertilizers are beneficial to lawns and gardens. To ensure proper usage, just read the bag and follow some basic steps: apply the right source of fertilizer at the Right Rate, Rate Time, and in the Right Place. Always use a good quality fertilizer spreader and follow the application directions on the packaging. Avoid allowing fertilizer to runoff into sewers and waterways by sweeping any stray product back onto the lawn where it can do its job. More information on how to feed your lawn and seasonal plants this spring can be found online at www. GreenerWorld.ca.

(NC)—No matter what your personality, there are many simple ways to infuse your garden with unique style. Minimalist Approach— Go for clean lines and carefully composed arrangements of rocks, moss, pruned trees and bushes. Tall grasses and gravel, or sand pathways will also add to the Zen feel, along with a meditative water feature like the Angelo Décor Pietra Falls slate fountain with pump. To finish the look, add solar LED rock lights that add function while blending into the foliage. Colour, Colour, Colour—Set the mood and showcase your personality with plants in your favourite hues. Use two or three adjacent colours to create a harmonious effect (red and orange) or create contrast with unexpected combinations of three, like purple, green and orange. Ensure careful planning when using the colour wheel and
check with your garden centre specialists to confirm you're choosing the right blooms. Eco-friendly—Native garden plants have adapted to their environment and offer greater resistance to diseases and pests than imported options—this means less care and water required. If indigenous gardening is on your radar there are many Canadian plants to consider that are beautiful and require less maintenance. These include Bergamot, Columbine, Purple Coneflower, Blue Iris, and Crocus. Find out which plants are suited to your zone, and let nature work for you. Find what you're looking for with The Home Depot's Optimum brand which makes shopping easy. From flowers to shrubs, all plants have a high quality designation and are labelled with proper care and uses; height and space requirements; and ideal sun exposure.

Canadian becomes first to win Giro d’Italia NATIONAL MILAN - Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal didn’t realize history was within his grasp until he was about five kilometres from the Giro d’Italia finish line. Aware he had a chance to overcome Joaquin Rodriguez’s 31-second overall lead in Sunday’s final stage, Hesjedal broke out onto the streets of Milan determined to keep victory from slipping away. Only near the end did he find out he would become the first Canadian to win one of cycling’s three major tour races. “Nothing anyone could have said to me could have changed how hard I rode,” he said.
Hesjedal took 34 minutes 15 seconds to complete Sunday’s 28.2-kilometre individual time trial in sixth — 20 places ahead of his Spanish rival. His 16-second margin of victory was the second closest in Giro history. *** SHAWINIGAN, Que. The long wait is over for the Shawinigan Cataractes. Anton Zlobin scored 17:51 into overtime Sunday, and the Cataractes were crowned MasterCard Memorial Cup champion for the first time in franchise history after a 2-1 victory over the London Knights. The Cataractes are the only founding franchise still intact from when the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
was formed in 1969, but had never claimed the nation’s top junior hockey prize. When Zlobin, an undrafted winger who was a scoring star in the tournament, took a pass from captain Michael Bournival in the right circle and fired it past Michael Houser to win the game, a explosion of noise burst from the jam-packed seats at the Bionest Centre. *** TORONTO - The Toronto Marlies are heading into the Calder Cup final without their leading scorer. Matt Frattin will miss theAHL championship series against the Norfolk Admirals, which starts Friday, after learning he needs surgery to repair a damaged knee.

“Matt Frattin is done for the playoffs,” Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins said after Tuesday’s practice. “He sustained a knee injury that will require surgery. I have no time line for rehab and that kind of stuff. All I know is he won’t play again this season.” The 24-year-old injured his knee in Game 5 against the Oklahoma City Barons when he crashed awkwardly into the net after scoring his second goal of the night. INTERNATIONAL INDIANAPOLIS - Dan Wheldon couldn’t win his third Indianapolis 500. Dario Franchitti did it for him. And if it wasn’t going to be Franchitti, then it would
be Scott Dixon. Maybe even Tony Kanaan. No matter what, one of Wheldon’s best buddies was going to Victory Lane. Franchitti stamped his name in the record books by winning his third Indy 500 on Sunday, a day that started and ended as a tribute to Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. As his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart — Kanaan out front, Chip Ganassi teammates Franchitti and Dixon second and third — they couldn’t help but wonder if Wheldon was at play. *** WASHINGTON - The
federal judge in the perjury trial against former major league pitcher Roger Clemens has excused a third juror, leaving just one alternate as the trial enters its seventh week. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton told lawyers Tuesday that the juror won’t be able to return following the death of her mother last week. The juror works in law enforcement with the local public transportation authority in Washington, D.C. Two jurors previously were dismissed for sleeping. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is accused of lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids or human growth hormone.

United Way’s Day of Caring was held citywide on Wednesday when volunteers completed projects at a number of locations around Estevan. to their teachers by putting energy behind a pen or pencil, too. Help them make their own small book by stacking nice paper and punching holes along the side. Bind them together by weaving ribbon or string in and out of the holes. If you prefer, make a card by folding heavy paper in half or use a large sheet of construction paper cut in half lengthwise. Tape the short ends together to make a long strip and make accordion folds. Jot thoughts and attach pictures on each section. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. a toy store, he got excited to make it a bigger production,” she said. To get started, Wendy and Emmett talked about the school year and then she helped him create topics for each page. Using photos, stickers and magazine pictures, the pages feature nature outings, ice skating, night sky watches and even the birth of Mr. Wold’s baby girl. The “Words of the Day” page lists Emmett’s favorites -groundhog, The White House and chrysanthemum. On the “I like your one-liners” page he writes “It’s the weekend, baby!” and he also glues on a tiny note from Mr. Wold: “Emmett, I’m hog wild for you.” Your school-age kids can show their appreciation

“Mr. Wold, you taught me how to read and write,” begins the thoughtful thankyou book 5-year-old Emmett Brown is making to give to his kindergarten teacher on the last day of school. Emmett eagerly practices his new skills as he sounds out words and writes them with a sharp pencil. “I think your glasses are cool when you read to us,” he continues, energetically dotting the “i” and crossing the “t.” “Making a little book or card is a personalized way of showing teachers how much they have made an impact on young lives,” says his mom, Wendy Brown, mother of two and blogger of her inspiring site about the art of handwriting, (www.brownink.co) Computers are a way of life for kids, but she believes it’s important to make room for paper, pencils and pens, too. “Emmett was going to write a card for his teacher, but when we discovered a create-your-own-books kit at
