Local Kin member now vice-governor

A local Kin member is taking on a big role with the Saskatchewan district, now acting as vice-governor for the province’s Kinsmen clubs. Mark Tribiger was recently elected to the District 3 board, which will see him as governor in a year. The ceremony to introduce the new governing body for Saskatchewan’s Kinsmen Clubs was held June 2 in Kerrobert. That’s when Tribiger was formally elected vice-governor. Nobody ran against him for the nomination, which he said made the process very easy for him. Tribiger has been a Kin member for a decade, holding every position, other than treasurer with both the Weyburn and Estevan executives. He was also the deputy-governor of Zone H, the local zone that is part of the Saskatchewan district. Tribiger was most recently the president of the Estevan club before deciding to take his Kinship to the provincial level. His presidential term will be ending any day now. Kin involvement runs in Tribiger’s family. His dad is a charter member of the Radville Kinsmen and is now a K40. He’s not an active member but “they have their Christmas party where all the old guys get together.” His mom was a Kinette for a number of years as well. He first got involved when a Kinsman who knew his father encouraged him to come to a meeting. “A guy that had brought my dad out actually came up to me and said you’re coming to Kinsmen. I said, ‘Well, I don’t know if I really want to,’and he, ‘No, I didn’t ask you. You’re coming out to Kinsmen.’ “I thought I’d go to the odd meeting and just be a member. I never once thought I’d be governor of Saskatchewan at some point.” Tribiger said he decided to get into the administrative side because he’d developed a good understanding of how everything in the club works. “I’ve been around long enough that there are actually people who start to look up to you. People know who you are, and it’s a lot easier of a role to do when you can walk into a room and everybody knows who you are.” He said the fellowship and the friends he’s made have been the best parts of the Kinsmen Club. He even first met his wife through the Kin Club. Bringing in the next generation of Kinsmen is an important thing, said

Tribiger. “That was one of the platforms I had when I was going to run for vicegovernor. In my governor year, I want to bring in the youth a little bit more.” He said that is one of the platforms the current governor is advocating so the youth movement for the Saskatchewan Kin Clubs will be in full swing for the next couple of years. “We’re going to be going to some of the high schools and trying to recruit from our campus clubs.

They are in Regina and Saskatoon.” As vice-governor he will be shadowing the governor, but will step in any time the governor can’t make a presentation or meeting. “I basically oversee all the stuff that’s happening within the district,” he said. “Any big projects that are being chaired, I’m the one they talk to. The deputy governors will look towards me for any advice.” Telemiracle is the premier fundraising effort for

Saskatchewan Kin clubs and he will have a role on the board that decides where the funds will go. “I will be sitting on the foundation board, for sure, next year as governor. Our foundation is where all the money we raise at Telemiracle goes, and they disperse it out. There’s a pretty good chance I’ll be a member-at-large and sit on the foundation’s board this year as well.” To some extent, Tribiger said it’s starting to sink in that he’s now committed

himself to Kinsmen in a great capacity for the next three years. “It’s a three-year term in a sense because you’re vice-governor, governor and then past-governor. Your governor year is your really busy year, your vice-governor year is your learning year and then your past-governor year is kind of just a wind down, where you’re just helping fill in all the holes for what’s go-

ing on.” In November, Tribiger will be heading to Cambridge, Ont. for a week-long session, training all the vice-governors from each of the country’s districts. “Basically, I’m going to be learning everything I need to know and who I need to contact when problems arise. It’s like when you get a new job you get the lowdown on everything.”

Perspective

Women in high demand in the west Census information is rolling out, and there is a little something that should come as no surprise: working aged men dominate the Western provinces, particularly Alberta and Saskatchewan. An article I read about this phenomenon encouraged young Canadian women to flock to the west, including Estevan, which it singled out by name, in order to find a man. Apparently, that is the first thing women should be looking for. Males make up 49.03 per cent of the Canadian population, but at the start of 2012, The Mercury was reporting that in 2011 males made up 50.6 per cent of the city’s demographic. There were 166 more men than women in the Energy City. According to this new census data, Estevan is fourth in the country for highest percentage of working aged men, behind only Petawawa, Ont., because of the army base, Wood Buffalo, Alta. and Cold Lake, Alta.. Statscan reports men aged 15-64 make up 53.1 per cent of the population in Estevan, not even including the men older than that. That makes Estevan one of the worst places to pick up chicks or go trawling for tail or any other derogatory terms we use for dating. Where were these stats before I moved out here anyway?

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers As a still fairly recent immigrant to Saskatchewan, my first thought when learning about these numbers is that my choice of location to settle down for the time being must be seen as foolish. Why would a guy want to move to Estevan when the demographics would much more favourably support an influx of women? The answer is clear; if Canadian women, or women from any other country, decide to take this article’s advice and set up shop in Saskatchewan’s southeast in order to find a man, I would no longer look so foolish for moving here. I was just a little bit ahead of the trend. Rather than going to where the women are, I headed out to Saskatchewan’s sausage fest. It might seem like a rookie move in the dating world, but now that the word is out on the west’s surplus of working aged men, I am right where today’s young women are being directed to go. I was simply being too proactive in

my approach, heading west more than a year before women my own age would be encouraged to do the same. There is also a bit of a dilemma I am seeing here. The story noted that the cities with the lowest percentage of men are where there are more industries suited to females. These cities are in Ontario and B.C. In reality, the only hope we guys have out here is that this encouragement is strong enough to send women out to the Prairies, where their job prospects aren’t as shiny. This sentiment also makes the premise of the article a little anti-feminist, suggesting they should want to sacrifice a career in order to find a man who can support them and start a family. On the flip side, guys looking for a lady friend should be encouraged to head east where the women grow on trees as long as the season isn’t too rainy. Those men shouldn’t expect to find a job, however. Their goal must be explicitly to find sugar mamas, but more likely they’ll find post-grads with $40,000 of debt. Now that the word is out, it’s only a matter of months before Canada’s young bachelorettes make their way to Estevan. I’ve positioned myself in the right place in the country. It’s just a waiting game now.

Next steps for pork industry The World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa is, as you might expect, an event where the industry has a chance to crystal ball its future. It is an opportunity to see what lies ahead for an agricultural sector that has been battered by low prices for too much of the last decade. In Saskatchewan, it was a decade that took the hog industry from being the poster child of farm diversification, to one pretty much on life support. The processing of pork has basically been moved out of the province, and the largest producers ended up needing to restructure debt with those owed money getting far less than they would have wanted in order to buoy the barns. It was actually interesting how the fate of the sector changed so quickly. Hog production looked like the perfect enterprise for Saskatchewan as a way to value-add to cereal grains which had long faced low prices made worse by the distance to ocean export position. Things have stabilized a bit during the past couple of years, but there are indications that prices may be on their way back down, and that won’t be good news for the sector.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist But prices are cyclical, and the sector knows that. What is more interesting out of this year’s World Expo is a discussion taking place in the United States about the fate of individual sow stalls. For many consumer groups, the stalls have become one of the main concerns regarding how hogs are raised. Those with a concern suggest the gestation stalls are far too limiting in their allowed movement for the sow. The move is to group housing, with a number of producers already taking that step. But there is a feeling it may become a legislated change, one pushed through government by consumer demand. The issue though, is whether or not the sow is better off in a loose housing situation. Having grown up on a pig farm, in an era before farrowing crates were even

widely used and most gestating sows were housed in outdoor lots, I can attest to the fact sows housed together in loose lots do not get along well. Larger sows are quite willing to bully smaller ones at the feed trough, and they are not gentle in doing so. Individual stalls allow greater customization of feeding for sows, which has its merits. Of course the science of things means little to consumers. They work on emotion and perception, and are vocal with regard to both. Consumers are voters, with far more of them out there than farmers, so politicians tend to listen to them. That is when legislation can be imposed - which has little to do with common sense. A glaring example of such a bad decision by government based on misplaced consumer pressure is the ban on horse slaughter in the U.S. Moving forward, the hog, poultry and other farm sectors, and even grain production in terms of chemical application on genetically modified varieties, will face more interference from such regulations and legislation. And that should be a future the World Pork Expo, and all farm meetings looking ahead should be discussing.

Is it ethical to grow human organs?

He He She She Said

The important thing to keep in perspective when dealing with a topic like this is why we are growing an organ. In cases where we are dealing with people who have some kind of health problem that causes an organ not to function properly there is a patient who will not get better unless they receive a substitute in a timely manner, it would certainly be unethical to turn this person back onto the street because there is no option for them. Organs don’t just grow on trees, yet. When the only option is a manufactured organ, it’s a necessity for modern health care. I’m very clearly not a doctor or scientist of any kind, so my knowledge of stem cells begins and ends with knowing that scientists can do all kinds of things with these cells and they are very versatile. Stem cells are a fantastic asset when it comes to medicine and they can play a big part in organ growth. In my mind, there isn’t really a question of ethics that surrounds stem cells. They are simply a new and effective tool used to combat numerous health problems. If they are used to grow my neighbour a new kidney, then the only moral dilemma I can think of is if they were actively refusing to create this kidney and wouldn’t give him any kind of help. Stem cells lying beneath the skin can be used to engineer new skin tissue that can be grafted on to burn victims. There just isn’t an ethical issue there that I can see. People who are ill deserve our help, and we are obligated to make sure everyone is taken care of. –Jordan Baker

Said

Said

I once read a book about a young man who lived his entire life only to learn he was a clone created with the intention of eventually having his organs harvested to keep an aging billionaire alive and being evil, and I kind of thought this was a bad idea; I mean, raising a person just to execute him just because you want his kidneys? Dislike. That being said, I’m not opposed to creating organs. If scientists can grow fully functioning livers in petri dishes and use them to save the lives of so many waiting for an organ donation, that’s pretty great. Considering the fact that so many organs (i.e. hearts) can’t be donated unless the organ’s original donor dies, so a liver grown in a lab from completely harmless cells is A-OK with me. I do worry about the evil this could span. Will these organs only be available to the super rich, like the villain in my novel? Will it eventually lead to raising people full of healthy organs meant to be donated? Or will it create creepy, floating torsos in tanks in labs, so passersby will be horrified by the sight? If these scientifically grown organs can be offered to the masses, to the people who would otherwise die without new organs, I’m totally in favour. If the organs will become another commodity to be sold off to the highest bidder, and used to keep the world’s wealthy healthier, longer, then I’m not really cool with that. Make it equal and fair for all, though, and you’ve got a deal. –Tonaya Marr

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 2012

Things to do before my life is over, at 35 Some of you may remember that I turned 20 last October. It was a traumatic event in my life, and since then (Oct. 8, if anyone wants to send me a card this year), my health had deteriorated. I won’t get too into the details, but let’s just say that things could be better, and they were better, back when I was 19. But I digress. In a few short months, I’m turning 21 and I’m realizing just how quickly the years are beginning to fly by. It’s terrifying. It feels like just a few short weeks ago I was complaining about the end of my teenage years, and here I am, complaining about rapidly approaching middle age. I’ve decided not to let it get me down though; I’ve got things to do. A whole list of things, in fact, of things I’d like to do before I turn 35 and the world as I know it ends. I mean, three-five sounds like a lot of responsibility and grossness. But onto my list. 1) Pierce or tattoo something. My parents don’t like piercings or tattoos, so my sisters and I are free from such adornments. But once I get out of university, I plan to change this, at least a little bit. I’ll probably err on the side of piercing, because I can at least take out an offensive lip ring when I come to my

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me senses, while a once-loved quote on the ribs is eternally regrettable. 2) Travel. I’ve been several places, thanks to travelling with the high school, family trips in my childhood and golf trips in university. But there are so many places, especially in Canada and Europe, that I really need to see before I settle down and have things to worry about ‌ like a mortgage. 3) Live outside of Saskatchewan. I’ve lived in Estevan, Regina, and St. Charles, Missouri. And while that’s a bit of a random list, it’s not enough to really know where I’d like to spend the rest of my life. So while I love Saskatchewan and acknowledge that I’ll end up here someday, I’ve got exploring to do. 4) Cry my way out of a ticket. I’ve only received one speeding ticket in my life, and while I did get emotional, I’m just not a crier. So the next time I’m pulled

over, I’m going to tap into my limited acting skills and give the water works a try. Because you never know ‌ 5) Be an adrenaline junkie ‌ briefly. I don’t like to be frightened and I hate that stomach-sinking feeling on roller coasters, but I’d like to sky dive, or

bungee jump, or white-water raft, or something slightly nerve wracking just for the life experience. 6) Actually read the books I said I read in high school English classes. This would just be great for my conscience. There are so many popular classics that I’ve never even cracked open, despite writing thorough and well thought out papers on their plots and themes. 7) Learn to enjoy wine and beer. This isn’t going to happen, but it’d be nice to enjoy a glass of wine when out at a formal supper, instead of slugging back Long Island

iced teas like I normally do. 8) Meet one of my favourite singers in person. This could be awesome or it could be horrible, depending on the attitude of that performer. If he lives up to my expectations, my life will be made. If he falls short of everything I’ve ever dreamed, I’ll be crushed. 9) Own at least some of the items I’ve pinned on Pinterest. I pin so many nice things every day, when planning for an intensely successful and happy future, that it would be nice to actually get to say “I lived up to my 20-year-old Pinterest expectation, at least in the case

of this staircase-bookshelf hybrid. 10) Finish writing a novel, even if it sucks. This would mean a lot to my grandma. And I’m not short in ideas ‌ just short in motivation and time. But I swear, I’ll get this done and be able to hand her the finished copy someday, even if it never goes beyond her kitchen. Tonaya Marr just wants to get her date of birth out there once again, in case anyone feels like sending her a card. E-cards may be sent to tonaya.marr@gmail.com and general well-wishes can be tweeted to @TonayaMarr.

Idol’s junior contestants light up stage Estevan Idol was back for its 10th year, as the Estevan Fair kicked things off on Monday evening. Tuesday night saw the preliminary under-15, junior competition, as nine contestants took to the Idol stage before the three judges, Launa Coyne, Brad Bengert and Ryan MacKenzie, and a special fourth judge, last year’s Estevan Idol winner Lexi Tytslandsvik. Of the nine performances, the judges were tasked to narrow the field down to four who would perform in the final round on Wednesday evening. That proved a little too challenging, as a tie couldn’t be broken as the judges deliberated. Five junior finalists moved forward for a chance to be this year’s junior idol. Samantha Pauchard, Faith Kyle, Emily Thompson, Brooklyn Willerth and Keysha Grulich were the lucky finalists. Other contestants were Carter Macfarlane, who performed Amazing Grace, Brittany Tuchscherer, who sang Mean, Hayley Greening who covered Price Tag, and Mary Stachoski who performed Stronger. At the end of Tuesday night’s performances, Bengert left a message for the finalists heading into the last day of competition. “Do what you can to make it happen,” he said. “Pretend it’s your job and

you’re making money at this.” Tytslandsvik added, “I hope you step it up even more, because I’m excited (for the finals).” Idol was moved into the Civic Auditorium for the competition, which ran from Monday to Wednesday evenings. The event kicked off before the senior competition on Monday with a banging of garbage cans, shouting and jumping through the audience as the Estevan Comprehensive School’s Stomp band put on a percussive performance. Vying for the senior Estevan Idol crown were Sabrina Demyen, Karissa Hoffart, Molly Foggarty and Blair Wrubleski. These four were to have two songs prepared for the competition final. The judges gave them some advice on what they would be looking for in the singers’ final performances. “Use that stage, like I’ve told you before,” said Bengert. “Song choice is always good. Myself, I like to see the stage presence. A fast song helps, but a slow song is OK as long as you work it good.” Also participating Monday evening in the senior category were Darian King, performing Somebody That I Used to Know; Aniruddha Ray, who sang Unchained Melody; Loralee Taylor, with

I Won’t Give Up; and Jodi McLaughlin who performed Accidentally in Love. While the judges deliberated at the end of Monday’s show, Lucinda Milford performed a couple of country jams for the audience as they waited for the verdict on who would be moving on. Kyle Whitehead hosted the competition, introducing each performer and doing a brief interview with each after they completed their songs. For the final results of Estevan Idol, check next Wednesday’s Estevan Mercury.

Samantha Pauchard performed I’m Yours.

Emily Thompson encouraged a little audience participation with her cover of 4 Non Blondes’ What’s Up?

Keysha Grulich set fire to the Idol stage with her performance of Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain.

RIM executives receive big payout

National TORONTO - The former co-CEOs of BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) will receive a combined $12 million in payouts for leaving their roles at the struggling company. In a document filed with securities regulators ahead of the company’s annual meeting, RIM outlined the details of what each former executive receives. Jim Balsillie will be paid nearly $8 million in salary and other compensation after completely exiting his role at the company in January. Mike Lazaridis, who remains a member of the board, will be paid about $4 million in salary and compensation under the condition that he will “continue to make himself reasonably available” to help the company in the future. The deal also gave Lazaridis his own office, executive assistant, as well as a car and driver for two years, at a combined value of about $733,000. *** MONTREAL - Quebec’s corruption inquiry has heard its first incendiary testimony, with a prominent civil servant revealing himself as the man who leaked a document to the media about construction collusion because the government didn’t care about it.

Jacques Duchesneau, a former federal official and Montreal police chief who most recently worked for the provincial government, said his political bosses clearly didn’t care what he had to say. He testified that when he tried last year to brief his supervisor, the transport minister, about the findings of his investigation into the construction industry, the minister was coldly indifferent. Duchesneau had been hired by the Quebec government to look specifically at allegations of collusion in the province’s transport ministry. *** MONTREAL - Six people have been arrested in connection with attacks that paralyzed Quebec websites. The arrests were made in an operation that involved five police forces — the RCMP, the Surete du Quebec, and three municipal forces. Members of the group are expected to face a variety of charges, including mischief, conspiracy, and unlawful use of a computer. Three of them are minors. The arrests took place in Rimouski, Sherbrooke, Forestville, Montreal and Longueuil, Que. Police are saying little else — such as whether those arrested are suspected of acting under the

guise of the activist group Anonymous, or what websites they’re accused of attacking. *** TORONTO - The federal government was sticking to its lines about the delayed transfer of convicted war criminal Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay on the eve of a Thursday news conference by his normally taciturn legal team. Two months after an official request by the Americans to take Khadr off their hands, a spokeswoman for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said there was nothing new to say about the case. “The U.S. no longer wants him and has asked us to take him,” Julie Carmichael said from Ottawa. “A decision must be made on his application in accordance with Canadian law.” That’s been Ottawa’s line ever since it became clear that the Americans were seeking to have the Toronto-born Khadr transferred to Canada to serve out the rest of his sentence. Khadr, 25, pleaded guilty in October 2010 to war crimes committed in Afghanistan in 2002 as a 15-year-old — including murder in violation of the rules of war. In return for his plea before a widely maligned military commission, he

was sentenced to eight years, with one year to be served in Guantanamo Bay. He was eligible for transfer last October. International BELLEFONTE, Pa. The child sex abuse trial of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky could be in jurors’ hands before the end of the week. Witness testimony on his behalf is expected to end in less than three days, but there is no indication whether the 68-year-old Sandusky might testify. The former coach faces 51 counts of abusing 10 boys over more than a decade in a scandal that has rocked one of the most storied sports programs in the U.S. He denies the allegations. Eight young accusers have testified for the prosecution. Another two have never been identified. For the defence, another former Penn State coach testified he knew Sandusky brought boys into showers but never saw him do anything wrong. *** BUCHAREST, Romania - A leading scientific journal said Romania’s prime minister has copied large swaths of his doctoral thesis without proper attribution. Nature said in a press release Monday it has seen

documents that indicate that more than half of the 432-page thesis of Prime Minister Victor Ponta written in 2004 on the International Criminal Court was plagiarized from the work of two Romanian law scholars. Ponta partially conceded some of the allegations Tuesday. “The only reproach I have is that I did not list authors at the bottom of each page, but put them in the bibliography at the end,” he said. “If this is a mistake, then I am willing to pay for it.” *** LONDON - A British company said Tuesday it has cancelled insurance for a Russian ship it says was carrying munitions to Syria — a shipment the British government says included

refurbished military helicopters. U.K.-based insurer Standard Club said in a statement that it had been made aware that a Russian ship, MV Alaed, was carrying the munitions destined for Syria, in clear breach of its rules. “We consequently informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage,” it said in a statement. Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed it was aware that a ship carrying a consignment of refurbished Russian-made attack helicopters was heading to Syria. It said Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague had told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that all defence shipments to Syria must stop.

Peter Walsh helps with Brain Clutter Recently on GetRealLive Radio we had the honour of hosting our friend, Peter Walsh. If you’re an Oprah fan, you may have heard of him. Peter is a witty Aussie who through his ability to organize and make sense of clutter, he quickly became Oprah’s “go to guy’ when it came to organizing and helping millions of people wade their way through ‘stuff.’ My world collided with Peter’s last year when I requested an interview with him. He promptly replied to my e-mail with a yes and from there a friendship was birthed. Peter has been a guest on our radio show many times and every time has something new to offer and has a unique ability that through a simple conversation he is able to help make sense of even the smallest detail. While talking to Peter I was thinking about brain clutter and how as a mother of three there have been many times I have: 1 – Forgotten an appointment for the kids or myself. 2 – Realized that dress up day at school slipped my mind. 3 – Found myself standing in a room wondering why I was there.

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life 4 – Having been standing holding a telephone, trying to remember who I was calling. 5 – Been in a conversation with someone and although I’ve talked to them countless times I can’t remember their name. I’m sure many of you have read the above points and many of them resonate with you and you could (like me) add more to the list. Whatever the case may b e, we all have so much on our minds. Sometimes I’m amazed that we are able to get through the work day (wink, wink). Perhaps this is an article targeted to young mums who are thick in the throws of babies, toddlers, schedules and sleepless nights because something I’ve noticed over the past few months is that the fog seems to be lifting. There could be a few reasons

for this: 1 – I have recently revamped my diet and have paid more attention to what I’m eating. 2 – I’m purposing to get more sleep. 3 – I’m exercising more. 4 – My kids are older and they are managing more of their stuff, leaving mind space for me to feel like I’m not behind the eight ball. Whatever the case maybe and it could very well be a combination of all four of the above, the sample fact is ... I feel like the brain clutter that I had experienced is different. Who knows, maybe it’s being in my 40s and I know more so I do better? I think one thing I’ve learned is that it’s important to download our minds every day. Things that have been dealt with and resolved, let them go. Make space for the things that matter and think

on them. In many ways, our minds are like computer hard drives that need to be backed up and rebooted once in awhile. So, to the young mothers out there, know that the fog does lift. There is light at the end of the tunnel and there will be a time when you get home from the supermarket and you have everything you needed. In saying that, I was talking to my mum about this (after our show with Peter) and we laughed because at 73 she reminded me to enjoy this new found clarity because as the years tick we may find ourselves cluttered once again. I think through all of this, I’ve resolved that all of us need to exercise our brain, much like our bodies.I sign off ready to find a crossword puzzle or a sudoku graph that needs my attention. Exercise, downloading and rebooting, all in an effort to rid ourselves of brain clutter. To listern to our interview with Peter Walsh, visit getrealive.com You will love what he has to say about how clutter affects us personally and doesn’t allow us to get to where we need or want to be. I hope you enjoy.

Best canadian ballplayer: Joey Votto Ferguson Jenkins was the best Canadian baseball player ever, until Larry Walker came along. Walker was the best until Justin Morneau came along. And Justin Morneau was the best until Joey Votto came along. As we stand now, in 2012, the Cincinnati Reds’ Votto is undisputedly the best Canadian player in Major League Baseball and may go down as the best ever. (Brett Lawrie of the Blue Jays might snatch that label down the road, but that could be a column five years from now - not 2012.) Votto, a first baseman from Toronto, recently

signed a 10-year contract with the Reds for a reported $225 million, putting him into the Prince Fielder-Albert Pujols stratosphere of salaries. Prior to putting his signature on that contract likely the last one he’ll ever sign - there were whispers that he might become a free agent and sign with his hometown Blue Jays, making Toronto fans from coast to coast absolutely giddy. As a Blue Jay, Votto in Canada would be a superduper star, with the summertime profile of Sidney Crosby, but he’s doing pretty well in that regard in his adopted Cincinnati,

too. Columnist B.J. Bethel of Dayton, Ohio said signing Votto to a long-term contract was something the Reds had to do to convince their fans the team was serious about contending. He’s the Reds’ first bona fide superstar since the days of Barry Larkin and Eric Davis, Bethel wrote. Now in his fifth full season with the Reds, Votto’s numbers are extraordinary - again. He has averaged more than 30 homers and 100 runs-batted-in per season and he’s on pace

through the first third of 2012 for another MVP-type season. He won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 2010, thanks to a statistical season that ranks with anything the likes of Mantle, Williams, Aaron and Mays ever put together - 38 homers, 113 RBI and a .324 average. Flash in the pan? Not in the least. He’s a career .317 hitter and has homerun totals of 24, 24, 37, 29. This year, he was batting .359 through June 17 and was among the NL leaders

Bob Hughes nailed it

The legendary Hall of Fame sportswriter, now retired, predicted on our In The Huddle television program last week that with the debut of new head coach Mike Benevides, the B.C. Lions would badly want to win their home pre-season game against Saskatchewan. Did they ever. While the Riders dressed 62 players with over half them being rookies, the Lions displayed a veteran crew that played the bulk of the game and pulverized Saskatchewan 44-10 in the Wednesday night encounter at BC Place. It was akin to the bully kicking sand in the weakling’s face on the beach. “They played their dogs and we played our puppies,” laughed rookie Rider coach Corey Chamblin the day after the game, showing no appar-

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider ent concern over the score. The defending Grey Cup champs were flexing their muscle and sending a message to the rest of the league that they are the early contenders in 2012. They played that game like it was a division final rather than a meaningless encounter in June. “They did what they had to do and we did what we had to do,” Chamblin explained. The Riders were quietly seething at B.C.’s tactics but would not say so publicly.

Look, you never want to get blown out on national television whether it’s the Grey Cup or an exhibition game. It just looks bad. The Lions knew the Riders were bringing rookies and were running base offence and defence with no game plan and they exploited that. However the good news is the Rider brain trust got what they wanted out of it and that was to get a look at all the fresh faces in training camp in game conditions. They also left their key vet-

erans at home and starting quarterback Darian Durant only played three series. That will change this week when the Calgary Stampeders come to town Friday night for the final pre-season game for both teams. There is a tremendous amount of excitement around this one for two reasons: first, it’s the first time the Rider Nation will get to see their team in live game action at home in 2012 and secondly, Mosaic Stadium has undergone a $14-million renovation that includes two massive new scoreboards and end zone theatre seats. This season is a long, long way from being over. Heck, it hasn’t even started yet. And do you remember how that sand kicking on the beach story ended? The weakling grows up.

Pearn has been an assistant coach in the NHL for 16 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers and Canadiens. He spent three seasons with the Canadiens alongside Jacques Martin. He also worked as an assistant to Martin with the Ottawa Senators from 1996-2004. to right-hander Kyle Drabek will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday and miss the remainder of the season. Drabek felt a “popping sensation” in his elbow last week during an outing against the Washington Nationals. Preliminary tests showed Drabek suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews confirmed the diagnosis. The 24-year-old underwent the same procedure four years ago while a member of the Phillies’ farm system and required 13 months recovery and rehab before returning to the major leagues. In 13 starts this season, Drabek was 4-7 with a 4.67 ERA. He’s one of three Toronto starters dealing with injuries this season. International AUSTIN, Texas -

Lance Armstrong’s lawyers demanded access to evidence gathered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, including the names of witnesses who said they saw the seven-time Tour de France champion use performanceenhancing drugs. Attorney Robert Luskin asked the agency by letter to turn over the names as well as all test results. Armstrong has until June 22 to respond in writing to the fresh allegations, the first step of what could be a months-long process. “I’m exploring all my options,” Armstrong said in a telephone interview on Thursday with The Associated Press from Paris. “They’re not limited only to arbitration with USADA. I think there are other questions that need to be answered with regard to their behaviour and tactics.” ***

*** MILWAUKEE - Toronto right-hander Kyle Drabek will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday and miss the remainder of the season.

PHOENIX - Aaron Hill became the fifth player in Arizona Diamondbacks history to hit for the cycle after homering in the seventh inning against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. Hill hit a single in the first inning off Hector Noesi, a triple in the third and a double off the Mariners starter in the fifth. He completed the majors’ second cycle this season with a one-out solo homer in the seventh off Shawn Kelley. New York Mets outfielder Scott Hairston had the other cycle, against the Colorado Rockies on April 27. The cycle was the first by a Diamondbacks player since Kelly Johnson did it against San Francisco on July 23, 2010. It was the first against the Mariners since Oakland’s Miguel Tejada on Sept. 29, 2001, at Seattle.

Invite Some Veggies to Your Cookout Hotter temperatures and longer days mean grilling season is here. This summer, why not move over the hamburgers, steaks, brats and hot dogs, and make room for fruits and vegetables? Grilling provides another opportunity to prepare healthy fruits and vegetables in a quick and different way. Many people think everything tastes better on the grill, which can hold true for fruits and vegetables. Don’t like eggplant, zucchini or asparagus? Try it grilled! Better yet, why not Moroccan-Style Grilled Vegetables like the recipe below? Taste is not the only benefit of grilling. Vegetables and fruit cook so quickly on the grill that they retain much of their vitamin and nutrient content. It is best to have the grill warm, but not as hot as you would for grilling meat. Lightly brush the vegetables with olive oil and put directly on the grill, turning until tender. Try larger hunks, like a half a green pepper, large slices of squash or portabella mushroom caps, which are large enough to sit on the grates without falling through. A grill basket, aluminum foil pan or kabobs also can be used. If you prefer steamed veggies, wrap the vegetables in aluminum foil with a little olive oil and your favorite marinade or spices. Seal and place on the grill, turning occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes or until veggies are tender. Experiment with different spices, marinades and sauces when preparing fruits and vegetables. Don’t be afraid to try out various flavors. Store-bought mixes and marinades can have extra sodium, sugar and calories compared to a specialized homemade version. Balsamic vinegar or other flavored vinegars are great for drizzling over grilled vegetables or using in a marinade. Let’s not forget about dessert -- fruits on the grill make a sweet treat. Firmer fruits like apples, pears and pineapple are perfect for grilling. Fruits like peaches and mangoes also can be delicious, but need to be monitored more closely to prevent overcooking, which causes them to be mushy. Try cutting a fresh peach in half, removing the pit, brushing lightly with olive oil and grilling for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Sprinkle with cinnamon and add a dollop of light whipped topping or low-fat frozen yogurt for a yummy treat. In addition, remember to always practice safe grilling techniques and food safety when preparing any food. The next time you plan to fire up the grill, remember to invite some vegetables and

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 teaspoon turmeric Juice of 1 lemon Cooking oil spray

fruits to the party. Try this flavorful recipe for MoroccanStyle Grilled Vegetables at your next family or holiday gathering!

1. Preheat grill to medium-high; spray grates with nonstick spray. If using a gas grill, turn off one side; on charcoal grill, push the coals to one side. Soak (16 to 18) 12 inch wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes, or use metal skewers, if desired. 2. To make marinade: Using large bowl, mix together parsley, oil, garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and lemon juice. Mix well to combine. 3. Add vegetables and fruit to marinade in bowl or use a large resealable bag and pour in marinade and add fruit and vegetables. Mix well to coat all the ingredients. Let the ingredients marinate at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour before skewering. 4. Thread vegetables and pineapple onto soaked skewers. Wrap ends of wooden skewers with foil to prevent burning. Lightly coat both June 2012

Vandalized Gazebo

We recently ran a story on vandalism at schools in the city. Pleasantdale found broken lattice on their gazebo and some broken picnic tables a couple of weeks ago. They have now been repaired. Power Dodge gave the school enough money to fix the gazebo and picnic tables, and the Fergusson family gave them a tree to replace the one that was snapped. Above are photos of the vandalized gazebo and of the repairs.

SUMMER SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS Environment Canada monitors the weather 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If a severe storm is on the way, the weather service uses the local media and Environment Canada’s Weather Radio to alert the public. There are two basic types of alerts: A Weather watch is provided when conditions are favorable for a severe storm to develop. These are usually issued early in the day. It is a good idea to pay attention to the weather and listen to the radio or TV for up-dated information. A Weather Warning means that severe weather is happening or that severe weather conditions are very likely. A thunderstorm develops in an unstable atmosphere when warm moist air near the earth’s surface rises quickly and cools. The moisture condenses to form rain droplets and dark thunder clouds. These storms are often accompanied by hail, lightning, heavy rain, high winds and tornadoes. Thunderstorms are usually over in an hour, although a series of thunderstorms can last for several hours. Lightning –During a thunderstorm the air is charged with electricity. Bolts of lightning hit the ground at about 40,000 km per second – so fast that the series of strikes hitting the ground appear as a single bolt. What To Do When There Is Lightning: 1. Estimate how far away the lightning is. Every second between the flash of lightning and the thunderclap equals 300 meters. If you count fewer than 30 seconds, take shelter immediately. 2. If indoors, stay away from windows, doors, fireplaces, radiators, sinks, bathtubs, appliances, metal pipes, telephones and other things which conduct electricity. (You can use a cell phone) 3. Unplug radios, computers and televisions. 4. Do not go to rescue the laundry on the clothesline as it conducts electricity. If outdoors, take shelter in a building, ditch or a culvert but never under a tree. 5. If caught in the open, do not lie flat but crouch in the leap frog position and lower your head. 6. Do not ride bicycles, motorcycles or golf carts or use metal tools as they conduct electricity. 7. If swimming or in a boat, get back to shore immediately. 8. If you are in a car, stay there but pull away from trees which might fall on you. 9. You may resume activity 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Tornadoes Tornadoes are violent windstorms identified by their twisting funnel- shaped cloud. They are always produced by thunderstorms, but not every thunderstorm produces a tornado. They travel between 20 to 90 km/h, are erratic and can change course suddenly. Do not chase tornadoes. Tornado Watch means the weather could develop a tornado. Tornado Warning means a tornado has been seen or it is very likely that one will develop shortly.

Outdoor Fire Pit Safety With summer just around the corner, it’s time for families to enjoy an evening around their backyard fire pits. To ensure your summer fun is not dampened, keep in mind a few fire safety tips while using your outdoor fire pit. -Many people are allergic to smoke, so be courteous to your neighbours and don’t allow smoke from your fire to interfere with their enjoyment of the outdoors. -Keep your fire manageable. Large fires can give off excessive amounts of heat, which could easily ignite surrounding combustible materials (fences, decks, sheds). -Never start a fire in your pit with flammable liquids. Remember your boy scout days, and start it with small kindling. -Small children should always be kept a safe distance from the fire pit. -Keep a garden hose nearby, just in case hot embers do escape. -Never leave your fire unattended. Before you retire for the evening, soak your fire down with water to ensure all hot embers are completely extinguished. -A permit is required for all outdoor fire pits. They’re free. Just drop by the Fire Hall for a permit application. -If requested to extinguish your fire by a City Official (Police or Fire), please do so immediately. Failure to comply will result in a revoked permit, and a fee for service should the Fire Department be called to extinguish it on your behalf. Be fire safe and enjoy your fire pit this summer.
