My name is Retra. I am a DSH spayed black female. I’m six years old, a quiet cat, not like those silly youngsters! I’m not into wrecking furniture, just laying around and looking pretty. I need a family to love me, everybody needs someone to love them.

My name is Maverick. I’m 6 years old, and neutered. I’m a big boy! I would prefer to be the only fat cat in my new family, you get all the attention that way!

My name is Twilight. I’m just a little guy, about 12 weeks old or younger. My fur is uniquely colored. Remember, the Humane Society only asks for a deposit on getting animals spayed or neutered when they are old enough, and once that is done you get your deposit back. No adoption fee for kittens!

Remember, our Farm Program is in full swing and we have males and females ready to try the country life. Phone down to the shelter for more information about our farm program. It’s the best deal in town! The Estevan Humane Society reserves the right to refuse any adoption.

Idol contestants crowned Estevan Idol crowned its two most recent winners when the competition wrapped up last Wednesday. Sabrina Demyen won the senior division after performing her own original song with a six-string guitar, while Samantha Pauchard sat behind a keyboard for her final performance, covering Leonard Cohen’s popular Hallelujah. They received $500 as well as a number of items and gift certificates courtesy of local businesses. Idol ran at the Civic Auditorium June 18 to 20, with eight contestants in the senior category (16-and-up) and nine in the junior. Four seniors and five juniors advanced to perform in the finals. After the competition, and subsequent photo sessions, Demyen was still all smiles after stowing her over-sized cheque to the side in the Civic. “It’s really exciting,” said Demyen. “I’ve never won before and to come out and do something I haven’t done in a long time and win, it’s really exciting.” Demyen is originally from Prince Albert and started singing in a girls’ choir when she eight years old. She first played guitar at age 13, and she used the six string to play her final self-written song. “They told me to pick it up a bit. My first selection (on Wednesday) was faster because it’s what they wanted. And I thought I’d bring an original song to show off my writing skills.” She wrote the song two years ago when she first started dating her boyfriend. She said she believes she’s performed it once before. “I used to do a lot of competition when I was younger, and I never actually won. I always came in top three or top five, so I’ve never won. So it’s kind of an accomplishment for me.” The last time she competed was about two years, and she remembers competing against last year’s junior Idol winner, Lexi Tytslandsvik. “I’ve always loved to sing, and I haven’t sung in a long time. I thought doing something more local would be fun.” Samantha decided to bring her voice to Estevan Idol because she loves to sing, and she had some fears to conquer. With the first-place finish, she was very pleased with her decision to compete. “It feels great to be a winner. Coming into the competition, I wasn’t really quite sure if I’d even make it past the first round. I’m really glad I did; it’s just a great experience. There’s so

many good contestants that showed up. I’m happy to be just with them.” Her song choices were being changed last minute, but that didn’t seem to affect her ability for any of the songs she performed.

noted she has always had trouble performing before an audience. “I really love singing, and I have a terrible stage fright fear. I just wanted to get over it. This has definitely helped a lot.” For Samantha, a 13-year-old from Oxbow, this was her first Estevan Idol competition, and she shed some nerves after each performance, looking quite at home when she for her third and final song. “There’s still a little bit of nerves,” she said. “I’ve always kept very quiet. I’ve never liked going out and performing, but it’s a lot of fun now, and I love performing.” The judges were Brad Bengert, Launa Coyne and Ryan MacKenzie, while Tytslandsvik stood in as a fourth judge for the junior competition. Karissa Hoffart placed second, while Molly Foggarty rounded out the top three in the senior competition. Emily Thompson was the secondplace junior, and Brooklyn Willerth placed third in the junior competition. Also competing on the final night were Blair Wrubleski in the senior division and Faith Kyle and Keysha Grulich for the juniors.

Perspective

This Canada Day, love Canada for real There are many ways Canadians can identify themselves. We have an incredible history as an industrious but slow moving people, hiding beneath the shade of our southern neighbours like the maples beneath the oaks in that Rush song. Of course, Americans aren’t superior. They’re just louder and more eager to let the rest of the world know exactly who they are and what they stand for. Canadians don’t have much interest in doing that. We know who we are, and we assume nobody else really cares, because why would anybody want to hear from the quiet kid in class? Canadians are much more than a Tim Hortons commercial will give us credit for. We aren’t all just a caricature of ourselves. We have a serious inferiority complex that I do believe one day we will get over, and probably in my lifetime. Part of that may stem from the fact that we’re all immigrants. The vast majority of us come from elsewhere on the globe. In that respect, our culture is broken. We’ve moved on and separated from Scotland and England, if you are my family. Others have gotten out of dodge from Italy, Argentina, India and Ukraine, particularly if you live in Saskatchewan, I’ve learned.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers We’ve brought aspects of all those origins into Canada, creating something of an Island of Misfit Toys in the Great White North. We aren’t outcasts, most of us are certainly here by choice, but why wouldn’t the German culture, which has been maturing for centuries, be far superior to the one we’ve established of part German, part Korean and part French? I think that question plays into why we often have so little regard for what our fellow Canadians can accomplish. The French have been doing what they do in France for a thousand years. French Canadians have been doing it here for about 150. There were French settlers here 400 years ago, but for a while I figure they were just being French on this side of the Atlantic. They’ve only been Canadian for 150 years. We’ve welcomed all the great cultures of the world, thrown them at the wall like we’re trying to see if our

spaghetti is cooked, and are now just starting to figure out what exactly has stuck. Canada has been trying to carve out a niche for much less time than other countries have, so maybe that’s where we get our insecurities. We’re becoming more comfortable in our own skin. I think we require less hand holding from the folks when we cross the street to go talk to China. We no longer need to shrug off every time another country does something better than we do with a huffy, “Well, let’s see what happens when we meet on the ice.” That’s right, folks, we don’t need hockey to compete on the world stage anymore. I’m not suggesting we do this, but we can hang up our skates and give hockey to the Americans and the Swedes, and it won’t mean we become irrelevant for all international competition, whether it be recreational, economic or our pure social strength. Canada may or may not be the best country on the planet, but I certainly don’t want to live anywhere else. I wouldn’t trade Canada for any other country, and on Canada Day, that’s what I’ll be thinking about: how great it is to be Canadian.

Awaiting inevitable end to CWB As spring officially passes into summer, the saga of the Canadian Wheat Board drags on becoming the Prairie version of The Never Ending Story. Actually this has become a story that more and more seems to be something concocted by Hollywood and not something you’d expect perpetrated by a government. Certainly there are enough villains to go around in this one, although a bit like the fabled Hatfields and McCoys feud in that exactly who the bad guys are depends a lot on which side of the feud you are viewing it from. And certainly there are enough plot turns to make Robert Ludlum proud. And like a lot of the fare coming out of Hollywood these days, the ending of this story is clear too. There remains an effort by some farmers to stall the ending and force a sequel to be written, but ultimately, the single desk sales agency for Prairie wheat, durum and designated barley is dead. The premise held by many that the Stephen Harper government was heavyhanded at best, and at worst illegal in how it changed the system, will matter not in

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist the long run in terms of the Canadian Wheat Board. Should the court challenge, currently being appealed by a farm group, overturn the federal government process, it will only mean Harper and company have to go through the process in a way which meets legislation, and then make the change since a farm vote will not be binding regardless of the results. And with the majority given the Conservatives in the last election, they can eventually make their change. As it now stands, the Federal Court of Appeal struck down Justice Campbell’s December 7, 2011 ruling where he found that Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz had acted outside of the rule of law by bringing forward legislation that destroyed the Canadian Wheat Board’s single desk without first conducting a farmer vote. The Court of Appeal ruling now faces

a further appeal, which if successful, will put the matter before the Supreme Court for a final decision. It would speak volumes on the character of our federal government if the highest court in the land ruled against them, but it would do little to preserve single desk selling. Whether a proponent of the Canadian Wheat Board, or not, it has become time farmers recognize the change is inevitable. In a democracy we sadly often live with changes that are not immediately popular, and many of which are proven to be just bad moves. Does anyone remember the Gross Revenue Insurance Program (GRIP)? Never widely desired and ultimately proven a terrible program, it is an example of what can transpire when government knows best above all. Time will tell whether the CWB decision was a wise one, or one done simply for the sake of Conservative government arrogance. But either way it is a change that is going to happen, whether on Aug. 1, or a year down the road because of a court decision. That is the ultimate end to this story.

Just for pregnant women? OK, guess what, based on the headline of this week’s column? I’m NOT pregnant, but this week I do get to do something that I’d always associated with pregnancy: I’m getting an ultrasound on my stomach! Pretty exciting, and given my natural tendency toward awkwardness, it’s going to be a great time for all involved. The reason for my ultrasound is doctors are trying to figure out if I have an ulcer in my intestines. And considering how brutal I’ve been feeling lately, and the fact that I’ve been taking medication meant to treat ulcers for several weeks, I’m going to assume they are onto something. But that’s definitely not how all the young mothers at the clinic are going to see me, because I’ve got some spectacular plans to make this a fantastic event. I’m going to wear mom-jeans that draw in at my waist, and a loose top, in an effort to look as maternal as possible. The

outfit, plus the fact that I can easily be mistaken for a 17-year-old on any given day, might be enough to make several of the planned-pregnant parents stare at me with disdain. No matter how cool MTV tries to make it look, and the dozens of teen moms you may know who are awesome, teen pregnancy isn’t really something that’s encouraged and celebrated. But I’m not going to stop there. Oh no, I’ve got several other tricks ready to be unleashed on the unsuspecting parents-to-be. I’m going to take along a flask full of water (or juice, hard to decide) and a pack of cigarettes and carry them in my purse. Then I’m going to accidentally knock the whole thing over and spill the contents on the floor. And, of course, I’m going to curse wildly and make a huge scene while I scrape everything back into my bag. I may even take a swig from my flask. The picture of a perfect parent. *(I should note RIGHT NOW that I don’t

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me smoke, and I don’t even own a pack of cigarettes. So relax, Mom and Dad). I may also make a phone call to discuss the crazy party I’m planning for July long weekend (I’m not planning a huge party),

and then rub my belly and giggle about how I’m going to raise my baby to be the best partier ever, since it’s been doing keg stands before it was even born. How cute is that?! And to cap everything

Play park schedules kick off Canada Day The Estevan play parks are now open for summer fun. The play parks run activities from July 3 to Aug. 24 this summer. Each park will have its own theme every week. With this year’s London Olympics, there will be an Olympic-themed week leading up to the international competition. Other weeks range from Dino-Mite, which will look at dinosaurs, to Space Invaders, where children will learn about the planets. The play park schedule kicks off with Canada Day activities at Hillside Playpark throughout the afternoon, sponsored by the Kinsmen Club. July 20 will feature the PJ pancake breakfast at Rusty Duce Park, on Aug. 9, Hillside will host a movie night and Aug. 17 will be the Jungle Adventure Carnival

at Hillcrest Park. Those are events open to the entire city. “We have a pretty busy summer,” noted Liisa Kleemola, the summer program co-ordinator. She said the play parks aren’t just for the mornings, as there are lots of pool games in the afternoon as well as breaks for snacks. “We’ll try to play a couple of land games as well around the playground and stuff like that, so (we try to) keep them active.” The play leaders are typically university students, though there is one high school grad this year, and they are all looking into a career in education. Kleemola was a park leader in the city last year, and is in her fourth year at the University of Lethbridge, studying education. She was two years before completing her studies.

The Estevan play parks open for business on July 1 for Canada Day celebrations. After that there will be programming throughout the summer on weekdays. “Two years left and then I’ll be a teacher,” she said. “We only have one high school graduate this year. She graduates on Wednesday and she’ll be starting right on

Thursday, so she’s going to be busy.” The play leaders are all going into education, added Kleemola, or already have been accepted into education.

“We do have a lot of people who are really interested in kids, and really do care about kids. They’re wanting to spend their whole lifetime with them, so they

really do care.” She said these summer postings as play leaders are some of the best experience prospective teachers can receive. Kleemola came up with the themes for this year based on what went well previously. Some connect more with the children than others, and some are also difficult to find supplies for so the kids can complete their crafts. “We do try to accommodate to have enough craft supplies for 30 kids,” she said, but added that they don’t turn kids away. She said for those who want to stay on top of everything at the play parks this summer, they can keep up to date by following the parks on the City of Estevan Facebook page. Kleemola also has a mailing list, so just send your e-mail to playparks@estevan.ca

Invention means less trips for lobster fishers Provincial SASKATOON - Workers at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency have rejected a final offer from the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations. Seventy-eight per cent of workers voted to reject the employer’s last offer and now the union has extended an invitation to SAHO to work with a mediator to help sort out the issues to solve the bargaining impasse. The union has been calling for binding arbitration, but so far, the government has refused. Key issues include full retroactivity for nurses and binding arbitration for future rounds of bargaining so that disputes can be settled without strike action. Currently, staff are refusing to work voluntary

overtime at the agency in an effort to put pressure on the government and SAHO. Cancer agency workers have been without a contract since December 2009. National HALIFAX - Lobster is Canada’s most valuable seafood export, but for fishermen working at one of Atlantic Canada’s 45 lobster fisheries the trips to and from shore are costly. Lobster fishermen spend up to $700 in fuel per trip, which means checking traps daily can cost almost $5,000 a week. But checking traps daily doesn’t guarantee a lobster. Thanks to a local inventor, this summer’s lobster season just got a little bit cheaper for fishermen near Meteghan, N.S.

The Bait Savour is the latest from inventor Vince Stuart and Dalhousie University’s Innovation and Design Lab — also known as iDLab — and allows fishermen to extend the amount of time they can leave their traps unattended but still baited. *** OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada says the family of a Quebec man killed when a tree fell on his car should be using the province’s no-fault auto insurance scheme to seek compensation, not a civil lawsuit. The court’s ruling stems from an August 2006 incident in which a tree maintained by the City of Westmount fell and killed Gabriel Anthony Rossy, who was in his automobile. His family sued the city

for failing to maintain the tree, but a Superior Court judge dismissed the action, saying it was a matter that should be dealt with through the province’s Automobile Insurance Act. The Quebec Court of Appeal overturned that ruling and found that the car had nothing to do with Rossy’s death. It ruled it was simply something he was sitting in when he died. In its 7-0 decision, the Supreme Court restored the lower court ruling and dismissed the lawsuit against Westmount. *** TORONTO - Once again, no one has the winning ticket for the $50-million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw. But six winning tickets were sold for the 18 MaxMillions prizes of $1-million each. Two were bought in Quebec, two in Alberta, and

one each in Ontario and British Columbia. The jackpot for the next Lotto Max draw on June 29th will remain at $50-million, but there will be an estimated 28 MaxMillions prizes. International PETALUMA, Calif. Maybe the name helped. A rescue dog from the United Kingdom named Mugly has won the annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest. The 8-year-old Chinese crested won $1,000 and a year’s worth of dog cookies by beating out 28 other ugly dogs from around the world. “I couldn’t speak when they announced Mugly’s name,” said Bev Nicholson, the dog’s owner. “I didn’t know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog.” Nicholson said Mugly also was named Britain’s ugliest dog in 2005. Organizers at the California event say the dogs

Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defensive coach who was once Paterno’s heir apparent, was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts and is almost certain to spend the rest of his life in prison. The jury of seven women and five men, including nine with ties to Penn State, deliberated more than 20 hours over two days. Sandusky showed little emotion as the verdict was read. Judge John Cleland revoked his bail and ordered him taken to the county jail to await sentencing in about three months. Many of the charges carry mandatory minimum sentences. Sandusky half-waved toward his family in the courtroom as the sheriff led him away. Outside, he calmly walked to a sheriff’s car with his hands cuffed in front of him.

Riders to field youngest CFL team

The renovations continue. This past winter, we asked first-year Roughrider head coach Corey Chamblin if his football team, if compared to a recently-purchased house, was simply a fixer-upper or if it needed massive renovations. As it turns out, they tore this thing down right to the studs and are starting from scratch. Coming on the heels of an 0-2 pre-season which concluded with a 33-31 last-

second loss to the Calgary Stampeders Friday night in Regina, Saskatchewan announced its final roster cuts Sunday morning and there were some familiar names on the list. They include defensive back Lance Frazier and offensive tackle Dan Goodspeed, both in their 30s. Chamblin said those players’ best days are behind them and they’ll both likely get into coaching or personnel. That means the 2012

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider Saskatchewan Roughriders - with the youngest coach in the league at age 35 - will go into the season with likely the youngest team in the CFL. Yikes! It appears the oldest player on the squad is 32-year old third-string quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan,

a CFL rookie, but also a veteran of 11 NFL teams. Double yikes! Why do I have the image of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo in my mind? Possibly because there is so much uncertainty surrounding this club as it gets set to open the regular

season Friday in Hamilton. Of course, as a society and certainly as a province, we’re all resistant to change. However it was apparent through last year’s 5-13 season that this team was allowed to get old without anyone really noticing. Old and dated ... the results showed for themselves. During the past few weeks, many people have asked me what’s the feeling around the team as we get set to embark on a new season and my response is always “newness.” With the youngest coaching staff in the league, that includes CFL greats Khari Jones, Jason Tucker and Barron Miles, there’s been a massive

infusion of enthusiasm at the aging Mosaic Stadium. Add to that a host of fresh faces like former NFL running back Kory Sheets and receiver Justin Harper plus up-and-coming Canadians like defensive tackle Zack Evans and offensive lineman Ben Heenan and you’ve got a whole host of 20-somethings who are eager to prove they can play and also to start a new chapter of Rider legends. Yes, yes everyone is optimistic this time of year, because every team is 0-0 but you can’t help but bask in the confident aura of Corey Chamblin. It appears he and GM Brendan Taman make great interior decorators.

Burris and Ticats ready for grey cup run

Phone: 634-5016 1033B 4th Street • Box 695 • Estevan, SK S4A 0W4 • Fax: (306) 634-3166 serviceestevan@thundercity.ca

It’s been quite a drought for the Hamilton TigerCats, but with a couple of former all-stars from the west suiting up in the black and yellow uniforms of Steeltown, the Grey Cup could make a return to that city in 2012. The 100th Canadian Football League season is just nicely under way and trying to see through the cloudy crystal ball to discover which teams will meet in Toronto in November is difficult. But the Ticats, whose last two Cup triumphs were in 1999 and 1986 - that’s two Grey Cups in the past 26 years - have a good and interesting mix of talent. Considering six of the eight CFL teams in 2011 won between eight and 11 games (now that’s parity!), it’s a fine line between success and failure. A key injury here or there and a team could go from a potential 12-4 to 4-12.

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist

New Hamilton coach George Cortez is hoping a pair of ex-westerners - quarterback Henry Burris, formerly of Calgary Stampeders, and receiver Andy Fantuz, the former Saskatchewan Roughrider great - will play key roles in the Ticats’ resurgence. Toronto Argonauts have similar hopes. Since their home field is the site of the 100th Grey Cup game, they would love nothing more than to be the host team in the Sunday, Nov. 25 Canadian classic. After a 2-0 pre-season record, and new quarterback Ricky Ray (another former Western Conference standout) in the Argos’ double blue uniforms, there are high hopes in the Centre of the Universe, too. Most CFL observers, however, feel the league’s power resides in the West, with defending Grey Cup champion B.C. Lions showing no signs of letting up as they go for two in a row. B.C., Edmonton and Calgary all finished with 11-7 records last year, and the Lions romped to an easy win over Winnipeg in the Grey Cup. The Bombers seem to have taken a few steps back, likely leaving Hamilton, Toronto and Montreal to battle for top spot in the East. Getting to the Grey

Cup game out of the East may come down to a Henry Burris-Ricky Ray battle and it says here that Burris will relive his heroics of 2008 when he piloted the Stampeders to the Grey Cup. • R.J. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 2012

Wimbledon dress code strict National WIMBLEDON, England - Milos Raonic is doing all he can to prepare for the Wimbledon grass that he injured himself on last year. The Thornhill, Ont., native had an abrupt end to his Wimbledon campaign when he slipped early in his secondround match and had to retire with a painful right hip injury. This year, Raonic said only the rain has given him pause as he prepares for his first match Tuesday against No. 45

The

Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. “I didn’t think about it too much,” he said. “Only when it would rain a little bit or if it was wet, we would sort of practise a little bit more cautiously. Outside of that, when the court conditions are how they should be, there were no second thoughts.” That he has confidence on the surface at all is a minor victory for Raonic. His fall last year led to hip surgery two weeks later. After a premature attempt at a return during

a Davis Cup tie in Israel in September, Raonic was not himself again on court until October at events in Tokyo and Shanghai. International KIEV, Ukraine - After two hours of clever, often dominating but in the end fruitless play, Italy found the answer against England. Penalty kicks. Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive kick Sunday to send Italy through to the European Championship

semifinals with a 4-2 win in the shootout following a 0-0 tie with England. Italy will next play Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Warsaw, Poland. Defending champion Spain plays Portugal on Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine. “We deserved this victory,” Diamanti said. “The penalties rewarded our dominance during the match. It’s only fair, we played a great match and battled from the first to the last minute.”

Outdoor Fire Pit Safety

With summer just around the corner, it’s time for families to enjoy an evening around their backyard fire pits. To ensure your summer fun is not dampened, keep in mind a few fire safety tips while using your outdoor fire pit. -Many people are allergic to smoke, so be courteous to your neighbours and don’t allow smoke from your fire to interfere with their enjoyment of the outdoors. -Keep your fire manageable. Large fires can give off excessive amounts of heat, which could easily ignite surrounding combustible materials (fences, decks, sheds). -Never start a fire in your pit with flammable liquids. Remember your boy scout days, and start it with small kindling. -Small children should always be kept a safe distance from the fire pit. -Keep a garden hose nearby, just in case hot embers do escape. -Never leave your fire unattended. Before you retire for the evening, soak your fire down with water to ensure all hot embers are completely extinguished. -A permit is required for all outdoor fire pits. They’re free. Just drop by the Fire Hall for a permit application. -If requested to extinguish your fire by a City Official (Police or Fire), please do so immediately. Failure to comply will result in a revoked permit, and a fee for service should the Fire Department be called to extinguish it on your behalf. Be fire safe and enjoy your fire pit this summer.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 2012

Tip of the Week The Estevan Police Service would like to remind the residents of following; Car Seat Safety - The safest place for children 12 and under is in the back seat of your vehicle. - Please ensure that harness straps are snug, meaning that only one finger should be able to fit between the harness and your child at the collarbone - Do not leave loose items in your vehicle during a trip, as they may hit and hurt someone in a sudden stop. - Item that did not come with your new child seat 9such as liners, trays, comfort straps or toys) may not be safe to use. Contact the car seat manufacturer and ask if these items are safe to use with your new car seat. -There are 4 stages for car seat safety, here are a few points for every stage; STAGE 1- Rear-facing Seats (birth-20 or 22lbs depending on your car seat) -Make sure you seat is at a 45 degree angle on sitting on your vehicle seat -ensure that your car seat does not move once it is installed in your vehicle -ensure that the chest clip is at the armpit level -the carrying handle MUST be in the travel position and not in the carrying position. (ensure that the carrying handle is all of the way down. Toys that can be attached to the handle cannot be used during transport for this reason!!!!!!) STAGE 2-FORWARD FACING SEATS (22lbs-40lbs depending on manufacturer) -Ensure that your child is the proper size and age for forward facing. The safest position is rear facing and please do not rush your child into a forward facing seat. -Reach you owner’s manual for assistance in how to install your car seat -The tether strap MUST be used at ALL TIMES for forward facing seats. -the child seat should not move more than an inch in any direction once the car seat is installed -Most forward facing car seats are for children up to 40lbs, however check the manual as some forward facing seats can hold children up to 65 lbs -PLEASE do not rush your child in a booster seat. STAGE 3-BOOSTER SEATS (40- 80lbs depending on manufacturer) -If your child still meets height and weight requirements of your forward facing seat, it is safe to use it as long as possible. Please do not rush into a booster seat. -Always install your child on the back seat as this is the furthest position from the front air bags -A correctly installed booster seat should keep the lap and shoulder belts in place across your child’s hips, chest and shoulders.(NOT ON THEIR STOMACH) -NOTE: if your are using a low-backed booster, the vehicle MUST have adjustable head restraints. They will protect your child’s head and neck in a crash. -always use a lap and shoulder belt system with a booster seat -always buckle up an empty booster seat(or take it out) so it doesn’t bounce around or become a projectile in the event of a crash -THIS IS THE MOST MISUSSED STAGE OF THE CAR SEAT STAGES. Biggest misuse on NOT USING A BOOSTER SEAT!!!!!!! STAGE 4- SEAT BELTS -Please ensure that your child is the proper height and weight for the vehicles seat belt system which is designed for ADULTS. -The shoulder belt should rest on your child’s shoulder, never on the neck or arm. IT SHOULD NEVER BE BEHIND THE BACK OR TUCKED IN UNDER THE ARM -The lap belt should be snug against your child’s hips, and not on the stomach -to ensure proper seat belt placement your child should be able to sit up straight against the back of the vehicle’s seat with their legs hanging over the seat without slouching -The knees should hang over the seat and the feet are on the floor If you have any questions please contact SGI, or the Transport Canada Website for further information. Please look for a car seat clinic in your area as that is the best way to ensure that your car seat is installed properly.

SUMMER SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS Environment Canada monitors the weather 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If a severe storm is on the way, the weather service uses the local media and Environment Canada’s Weather Radio to alert the public. There are two basic types of alerts: A Weather watch is provided when conditions are favorable for a severe storm to develop. These are usually issued early in the day. It is a good idea to pay attention to the weather and listen to the radio or TV for up-dated information. A Weather Warning means that severe weather is happening or that severe weather conditions are very likely. A thunderstorm develops in an unstable atmosphere when warm moist air near the earth’s surface rises quickly and cools. The moisture condenses to form rain droplets and dark thunder clouds. These storms are often accompanied by hail, lightning, heavy rain, high winds and tornadoes. Thunderstorms are usually over in an hour, although a series of thunderstorms can last for several hours. Lightning –During a thunderstorm the air is charged with electricity. Bolts of lightning hit the ground at about 40,000 km per second – so fast that the series of strikes hitting the ground appear as a single bolt. What To Do When There Is Lightning: 1. Estimate how far away the lightning is. Every second between the flash of lightning and the thunderclap equals 300 meters. If you count fewer than 30 seconds, take shelter immediately. 2. If indoors, stay away from windows, doors, fireplaces, radiators, sinks, bathtubs, appliances, metal pipes, telephones and other things which conduct electricity. (You can use a cell phone) 3. Unplug radios, computers and televisions. 4. Do not go to rescue the laundry on the clothesline as it conducts electricity. If outdoors, take shelter in a building, ditch or a culvert but never under a tree. 5. If caught in the open, do not lie flat but crouch in the leap frog position and lower your head. 6. Do not ride bicycles, motorcycles or golf carts or use metal tools as they conduct electricity. 7. If swimming or in a boat, get back to shore immediately. 8. If you are in a car, stay there but pull away from trees which might fall on you. 9. You may resume activity 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Tornadoes Tornadoes are violent windstorms identified by their twisting funnel- shaped cloud. They are always produced by thunderstorms, but not every thunderstorm produces a tornado. They travel between 20 to 90 km/h, are erratic and can change course suddenly. Do not chase tornadoes. Tornado Watch means the weather could develop a tornado. Tornado Warning means a tornado has been seen or it is very likely that one will develop shortly.
