THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2012

Cheers! To the staff and students of Hillcrest school for doing a community cleanup on Friday, your neighbours appreciate it! Cheers to the tremendous volunteer base in Estevan. Without you, events like Hard Knocks would not be possible.

Jeers to the person who stole my shoes from the leisure centre Wednesday night. Thanks for making me walk through the mud in my bare feet to get to my vehicle. I hope you get warts. Jeers to the vandals. Try being a good citizen for a change. Got nothing better to do; get a job.

Cheers to the Day of Caring volunteers. Your efforts were very appreciated.

Jeers to the lazy people who can’t put their shopping carts away. FYI, they hit our cars!

Cheers to the people who are actually using the crosswalks on Fourth Street.

Jeers to a pedophile only getting 15 months while the victims get life.

Cheers to the re-opening of Souris Avenue North. Cheers to the Shriners Circus and all the good work the Shriners do in our community.

Jeers to local law enforcement who backs out of his space and crosses the yellow line. That’s illegal and police are expected to demonstrate the rules of the road.

Cheers to the cake lady for going out of her way for making my three year olds birthday cake special with her own Hello Kitty design.

Jeers for having the boulevard along Petterson Drive dug up last year, so they are nothing but unsightly weed patches this year.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

Jeers to the people trimming the trees on main street. A little more off and we’ll have totem poles. Leaders of tomorrow! www.4-H.sk.ca

The Morrises’ vehicle that led to the problems was modified by a mechanic in Oklahoma, who cut their truck and welded on the back of a suburban, which added seats as well as an extra row of doors.

Family jumping through hoops to recover vehicle A Lampman family is frustrated by bureaucracy and red tape after a vehicle of theirs has been left stranded at the North Portal border crossing for nine months. Edwin and Alison Morris have a family 10 and they have been in search of a safe vehicle that accommodates their entire family. Finding no suitable options in Canada, they found a man in Oklahoma to modify their truck by welding on the back of a suburban. When they returned to Canada in August 2011 with the modified vehicle, it was deemed inadmissible and has been sitting at the North Portal border station ever since. “They wouldn’t let it through the border because the frame had been modified,” said Alison. “That’s what we were told.” Border agents showed them a copy of the Registrar of Imported Vehicles rule regarding importing a vehicle purchased in the United States. “That’s not what we did; we didn’t purchase it in the United States.” They took the truck to Custom Autos by Tim, a company they found on eBay in Oklahoma, to make the modifications they needed. The truck has now been sitting at the North Portal border since Aug. 15, 2011. The Trader Express contacted Transport Canada and received an e-mail response from Maryse Durette, a senior adviser, saying, “Bringing back to

Canada a Canadian-certified vehicle after having it altered in another country constitutes importation, and the importer must comply with the Canadian regulations.” In January 2011, Alison called a 1-800 number for the Canadian Border Services Agency and after speaking to a supervisor was told the modified vehicle wouldn’t be considered an import on its return to Canada. He told her to make sure they had a bill, paid any applicable taxes or duty and it would be admissible. “I said, ‘Are you sure, because we already know we cannot purchase one like this and import it.’ He said ‘No, you wouldn’t be allowed to do that, but this is will be OK.’” Alison said the CBSA is now denying they were given bad information. The family received a letter a couple of weeks ago from Vic Toews, the minister of public safety, informing them that he had the CBSA investigate themselves. As a result of the investigation, they found themselves to have committed no wrong. Transport Canada said there is a process the family can follow in order to get their vehicle back. Durette said, “The company or mechanics that did the modifications need to demonstrate that vehicle still meets Canadian standards. I understand that once that has been done, by way of re-certification,

the vehicle can re-enter Canada.” “We’re the ones that modified this vehicle,” said Edwin. “We paid someone to modify it, so we’re the only person that can put that (certification) sticker on legally.” Alison said that for them, it doesn’t seem to be as simple as Transport Canada suggests. “They can’t inspect it. They won’t let anyone else inspect it. Provincial inspections are inferior. Even if we tested it, even if we built another one like it and crashed it, did all the tests on it, they wouldn’t accept the results because it’s on used parts,” she said. “They’re saying that if we provided the certification information, they would review it. That’s their answer they’re giving the media. It’s misleading because they’ve already told us they won’t accept the results if we’ve provided them.” Part of the Morrises’ frustration comes from trying to make sure they did everything legally. Alison stressed they were trying to comply with the system in order to provide a safe vehicle that could accommodate their family. The truck frame and body were cut behind the cab, taking the back of the cab off. The frame and back part of the suburban were cut behind the front row and welded to the truck. The wheel, brakes and axle are all original parts from the truck. “It’s the same length,

the wheel base as a crew cab on a long-bed truck so it can use the same brake lines.” The finished product extended the original vehicle by 15 inches and includes an extra row of doors. The suburban parts used for the back of the truck were purchased in the United States, and Alison said that’s what they were claiming on their return to Canada. Their story is getting national attention. While speaking to The Mercury at the Estevan office, they receive a call for an interview request later that evening from a Toronto media outlet. The Morrises feel as though they are running out of options and that perhaps the only thing that can now help them is for some political will in their corner. Anyone who wishes is free to write their member of Parliament and share the Morrises’ story. For now, the vehicle remains at the North Portal border station.

Reading outdoors should be a peaceful time When you can think of nothing else to write about, it’s time to talk about the weather. Canadians love to talk about the weather. Now that it’s June, it is officially summer, even though summer doesn’t officially start for another couple of weeks. The short summer offers up countless things to do outside, and it’s important to take advantage of what little opportunity we have. One thing I always love to do on a warm summer afternoon is read outside in the backyard. It’s warm and quiet and peaceful. It’s one of the most relaxing things I can do as golf is only relaxing about half the time. There is only one thing that can destroy the peace of the good backyardreading powwow: the air conditioner. I’ve really grown to dislike AC. Maybe it’s because I live in a basement and it never gets that warm anyway. There is just no escaping the incessant groaning of the AC unit when I’m outside. I recall we had a jeer a few weeks ago, that made note of many of the things in our lives that make noise and ruin the peaceful moments when we’re

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers outside. I don’t have a real problem with most of those things. I can put up with the neighbour cutting his lawn, especially when it’s followed by the glorious smell of dewy, fresh-cut grass. I really like listening to music outside, at a reasonable volume, I believe, so I wouldn’t begrudge anybody else in the neighbourhood turning on a few tunes on a sunny Sunday. The air conditioner, though, that is one thing I just cannot put up with. It’s a monster attached to the back of our house that just never stops growling. I’ve got a summer reading list of Chuck Palahnuik, David Wong and Gene Wolfe. It wouldn’t be ideal to be stuck inside all summer reading these guys, particularly Palahnuik and Wong. I haven’t read Wong before, but understand his books are funny, while Palahnuik is just way too much fun to

read inside. There must be something done about the air conditioner. Maybe this problem can simply be solved by informing my roommate I expect the AC to be turned off for two hours each day during the hottest periods. Maybe he will just read this column and accept my demands without question, thereby foregoing any sort of confrontation. I also made a pledge earlier this year, one of two pledges I’ve made for 2012, that I would read Charles Dickens for the first time. There is so far nothing to report on that front. Dickens isn’t much of a summer storyteller, so I may hold off on him for now. I understand it’s best to read his work in an uninsulated stone building in the heart of winter. It’s like reading Dostoyevsky, if you’re not cold, you just aren’t going to be able to connect with the story. I’ll pencil Dickens in for October. While I have ruled out Dickens for the summer, I am still compiling my summer reading list. If there is any other summer reading I should consider, please send your suggestions to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca

Technology important on the Sask. farms This has been an interesting spring for farmers on the Prairies, although I am sure they might suggest most springs have their share of challenges. Certainly back in March it looked as though we were on the verge of an early spring. That is always a good thing for farmers since it has been shown most crops have more potential to produce if they are seeded early. Of course April saw the chance of a lot of early-seeded crop go by the wayside, and May was only slightly better, with rain an all too regular occurrence. It was not the sheer amount of rain that fell, but the fact the rain fell on already saturated soil. The last two years have been abnormally wet in most areas, and coming into spring it remained so. As we drive around now, we see much of the crop is in the ground. The situation is one that speaks to the dramatic change that has taken place in farming in terms of seeding crop. When I was a youngster growing up in the 1960s, farmers planted half their land to crop, leaving the other half fallow.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist My father, and most producers at that time, used press drills to plant a crop. The press drill required a basically level, summerfallow field in which to seed. That meant farmers had to use cultivators to turn under stubble, and harrows to smooth fields first. It meant farmers had to make several passes over a field before seeding was complete. Technology has changed that. Developments in seeding technology, many of them by short-line manufacturers here in Saskatchewan, have allowed producers to turn to direct seeding. The switchover has had a two-fold effect on farming. On the one hand, direct seeding - the ability to seed into standing stubble left from the previous year’s

crop - has reduced the potential impact of wind and water erosion on fields. The stubble protects the soil from being impacted by the effects of wind blowing over the land, or water running over it. The other benefit of direct seeding is the speed in which farmers can now plant a crop. In most cases it is a one-pass operation. With the size of today’s equipment, it means farmers plant a lot of acres in a single day. That is why you can drive around this week, and in spite of a fairly short window in terms of dry weather, farmers have managed to put in a lot of acres. I had a conversation with a retired farmer about a little over a week ago. He still helps on an area farm, and he estimated seeding was 50 per cent complete. Given the good weather of the past week, that will be much higher by now, and if the weather holds, seeding - while later than originally expected - should be completed. It is a rather amazing occurrence given the spring we had, but it does illustrate the advancements that have been made in recent years.

Are land lines part of our communications future?

She

While I feel like land lines are rapidly becoming less and less important, I don’t see them going anywhere. I spend all day, every day, calling land lines. Because I’m always calling businesses or communications departments, and they all have land lines. I call them from my own personal landline too. My landline is heavy and grey, and has a spirally cord and a spot to hook my recorder to. It’s very awesome. With current cellphone technology, it would be impractical to call a business on a cellphone. This is how I see it going: Tonaya: Hi, I’m calling for the manager? Employee: Oh hi, well this is the cellphone for the front desk. You can call our manager on his work cellphone at 555-5555. Or I can run this phone up four floors to deliver the call to him. Tonaya: … Yes, run up the stairs. I guess this could be beneficial to the health of administrative assistants. They’d be getting in a lot of jogging. But calls sometimes get dropped in elevators, and I know I’d feel guilty if the employee I asked to run up four floors fainted or had a heart attack on his travels. Land lines are just better for business. They don’t need to be charged. They’re harder to lose. They don’t get scratched up in your purse. They’re all interconnected. The only advantage I can see in ditching land lines is that I’d have an excuse for failing to transfer calls. I’m frequently required to answer the phone at work, and I constantly lose callers in the maze that is inter-office land lines. If my cellphone “accidentally” dropped a call, that would be SaskTel’s fault, not due to my incompetence. – Tonaya Marr

Said

He She

I’m not typically one to reminisce about the good ’ol days, but something is happening that I’ve predicted for some time and may cause some to get nostalgic. Land line telephone communications are on the verge of being obsolete. They may still have some business being used specifically for businesses, but as far as personal land lines go, they are a thing of the past. Stats Canada numbers show that 50 per cent of those between 18 and 34 years old use cellphones exclusively, with no land line in the house. That number is only going to rise. I had my first cellphone when I left for college. Now, it’s unheard of for someone to go through high school without a mobile, and surely there are five-year-olds texting each other emoticons right now. It’s not like there is a large gap between these years of the start of college and now. I’m not talking about different generations here. I still have a sister in high school. That 50 per cent is certain to climb and in 20 years, when those people are 40 to 60, I don’t imagine they’ll just jump back on the land line bandwagon. I’ve noted before that I don’t really know anybody with a land line. Nobody I grew up with has one. It’s not something we need. Land lines for businesses are different. For news agencies, it’s important to have a localized number to call like most businesses. Nobody wants to advertise multiple phone numbers for their business. There will be a place for these phone lines for companies, but not in our personal lives. One reason they may stick around is for nostalgia’s sake, as people are hesitant to make the change fully. I have no fond memories of something so bland as a land line phone, but I remember some awesome stories my grandfather has about the old-school telephone system. These are from the really old days, back when he said someone would make a phone call, and everybody’s phone on the block would ring. Each home would have a certain number of rings I believe, so when it did your ring, you would pick it up. Of course, anybody could pick up their phones and listen in. Apparently my great grandmother was quite the gossip and just loved listening in on other people’s conversations. That would be reason enough to keep a system around, but our land lines have no possibilities as exciting as simple eavesdropping. – Jordan Baker

Why sunburns are awesome I have definitely written about sunburns before. I can’t find the digital proof (nor have I looked very hard), and I’m not at my own desktop, so I can’t check my files. But I swear, I’ve written about

the dangers of sunburns before, which I’m starting to realize is a bit overdone. I mean, we spend our whole lives learning how unhealthy sun damage is to skin, but so many of us get sunburns anyway.

12062CC00

So I’m here today to tell you why sunburns are awesome. 1) Sunburns turn your skin red, and everyone looks good in red. I once read that when women’s magazines really want to sell copies, they’ll put the cover model in a red outfit. We just want some red in our lives. Red lipstick, red hair, red velvet cake, red tractors, heck, even the water bottle I’m drinking out of right now is red. 2) Freckles are just your body telling you that you were meant to have a darker skin tone. Here’s how I see it (I got a 90-something in Bio30 so I know things): freckles are just a sign that your skin wants to be a darker shade. I know people who get tons of freckles when they spend too much time in the sun, so many that their shoulders are almost covered. I’m pretty sure

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me that’s evolution. 3) Skin peels naturally anyway, so you’re just speeding up the process. This is a great way to look younger! Reveal the younger skin below and look 17 instead of 20! Pretty sure people are going to be asking to see your ID when you go to buy lottery tickets, and everyone knows how flattering that is. 4) Extra sunburn means extra Vitamin D. An adult needs 200 IU (international units) of Vitamin D every day. And while you can get that from supplements or your diet, you

can also get it from direct exposure to sunlight (or, just as awesome, tanning beds!). So if you’re pale like me, that’s something like 20 minutes in the sun without sunscreen. Imagine doubling or tripling that though? Vitamins are awesome and you can never get enough. 5) You’re only young once, so you might as well play in the sun. You’re not going to care about unsightly wrinkles when you’re older. By the time you actually have to worry about wrinkles, there’ll be some inexpensive cream

that can fight sun damage anyway. And even if there isn’t, no one cares what you look like anyway (because you’re old)! 6) Summer is short so you might as well spend as much time soaking up the sun as you can. It’s not like you’re getting sunburns all year ’round, like other people are in tropical places in the world. Two months of red, itchy skin is nothing. You’re invincible. Tonaya Marr is never sarcastic. She truly loves sunburns. She thinks all the safety precautions around sun exposure are probably just a government conspiracy. You should definitely believe everything Tonaya wrote in this column, because she is a 20-year-old journalism student and knows lots about health sciences. A: I think you should go ahead and schedule the fireplace cleaning. Worrying about the possibility that the cleaning company will charge you more than usual is silly when you can get a written estimate before they start the work, and compare it to other services in town. June is a slower season for chimney and fireplace cleaners, compared to fall when homeowners are in a hurry to get their fireplaces ready for the cold weather. time you want them to come in and service the chimney. They also should be able to spend more time checking your fireplace, chimney and flue for potential dangers, rather than rushing off to the next service call. Some chimney and fireplace service technicians offer discounts at this time of year. Check their website or call the company to ask about any specials they’re running. Again, you have control over how much you’re willing to pay for chimney cleaning

service. Ask for a written estimate up front, before allowing any work to be performed. If the chimney cleaner detects a problem, ask for a revised estimate, and don’t let the additional work done until you have agreed on the work and the price. HOME TIP: Help prevent a dangerous buildup of creosote in your chimney by burning hotter, cleaner fires. Use well-aged hardwood and crack a window in the room to draw in more oxygen. Life lessons and reaching goals Today I read something that really hit me and has stuck with me.After reading (and rereading) I thought these words were words that I would share with my family, on getreallive. com and in the columns that I write. I think these words really bring perspective to life. As a parent, I find that things are often sugar coated for our kids. We want to do so much for them and help them avoid some of the challenges that may be in front of them. We need to be reminded that perhaps some of the challenges are there are life lessons that they need to learn. It would appear that we are, indeed, living in a time where “instant gratification” is the new black. Sometimes, it even feels that hard work and perseverance aren’t really necessary or desired. Actually, it seems that if either hard work or perseverance is necessary, then whatever one is working towards no longer seems

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life worth the effort - especially if a little “elbow grease” is required. This makes me sad and causes me to wonder: How many people walk around, reminded of unmet goals or unfulfilled dreams? How many projects have been abandoned because it was “too hard” or simply because what was required was beyond “acceptable boundaries?” How many kids have seen their parents give up and put things in the “too hard basket” so they do the same (monkey see, monkey do)? How many people are simply frustrated because they never pushed through and accomplished what they had set out to do simply because the goal just seemed to hard or unattainable? Then there are the stories

we hear and love about someone who has pushed boundaries or stuck with something until they reached their goals, whether it be physical fitness or learning a new language or a skill, or possibly building a business. So many lives, so many stories. When we hear these stories, we tend to tune our ears to the success and we revel in that and that’s a good thing to do. Celebrating others’ success is wonderful. What’s interesting though, is that with every goal that is reached, every success that is savoured, there is usually a

story of frustration, feelings of giving up behind it. Deep in the story there is something that caused that person to keep going, to never give up and to reach the goal in front of them. With this in mind, I would like to share the honest and wise words I read today. I hope some of you will read these and will be inspired to keep going, to reach the goal or dream that is in front of you. I have been personally inspired by these words and I plan to share with my children. I want to share these words in an effort to let them know that sometimes things are tough,

Day of Caring completes 20 projects On May 30, Estevan locals and businesses got together and lent a helping hand. United Way Estevan’s Day of Caring took place last Wednesday and included about 100 volunteers taking on 20 projects across the community. The projects were both big and small and had volunteers covering member agency institutions like the Estevan Regional Nursing Home and Creighton Lodge, as well as individual residences. It was Estevan’s fifth annual Day of Caring, and Roberta DeRosier, United Way Estevan’s president, noted the inclusion of the schools for the first year went well. She said students attended Hill view Manor in the morning and lit up the faces of the residents there throughout the fun visit. Other volunteers spent their time doing yard work, fixing up gardens at several locations, as well as giving

a fresh paint job to a number of items at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home. During the community lunch at the Alliance Church, DeRosier honoured Michael Pho’s family. Pho was a long-time supporter of the United Way and the Day of Caring who died recently. She presented a rake to his wife Michelle and mother Lorraine. DeRosier also said she was pleased to see some long-distance volunteers, as Red Cross members from Moose Jaw and Weyburn came down for the day to add their care to the local volunteer cause. The United Way reminds those who weren’t able to participate in the Day of Caring, but were able to complete a project, like helping a neighbour after work, can let them know, so they can register the activity for the local branch. With politicians receiving body parts, will they take notice? Ever listen to those studies that say “don’t let your children watch television before the age of two,” or “don’t let them watch television at all?” You know all well-meaning scientific studies that tell us too much media hard-wires our brains? I’m starting to think there’s something to that. More specifically, I’m beginning to think all the horror genre - slasher flicks, zombie movies, vampire books and TV shows - is really starting to get to some people, especially those who may be certifiably crazy to begin with. Like the Wile E. Coyote vs. the Roadrunner, where he’s delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff, and a feather lands and sends him over the edge, I think the horror genre is doing this to the mentally disturbed. That’s the only reason I can think of behind three recent incidents in the news that all concerned cannibalism. It’s not like cannibalism is an every day occurrence in the modern world. “Oh, I’ll

have some wine, cheese, and human flesh, please.” That doesn’t happen. On the day I write this, German police bagged Luka Rocco Magnotta, who allegedly videotaped himself in his own snuff film - killing, dissecting, and feeding some of his victim to a dog. I don’t know if you would call that cannibalism or not, but it’s close enough in my books. The National Post drew several parallels to the crime and the movie Basic Instinct. That may very well be the case, but Sharon Stone’s character didn’t eat any human flesh, or feed it to her dog. Then we have the guy in Florida, who, within a few feet of the offices of a major newspaper, attacked a homeless man and started eating his face. The attacker, supposedly hopped up on a new form of delusional drug, was naked at the time. He had to be shot and killed in order to halt the attack. It wasn’t that long ago we had a delusional man

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile attack his neighbouring passenger on a bus in southern Manitoba. Vince Li killed his victim, cut off his head, and started eating him. What’s perhaps even more crazy than the assailants in these cases is the notion that anyone, anywhere, would even consider letting them out of prison to see the light of day again. Yet that’s exactly what’s happening with Li. In midMay, he won the right to have escorted trips into the community. An interview published in the National Post on May 22 stated: “Q. Why did you do what you did on the bus? “Li: I bought a knife at Canadian Tire. I bought it

for any emergency for the journey to protect myself from the aliens. I was really scared ... I believed he was an alien. The voices told me to kill him. That he would kill me or others. I do not believe this now. It was totally wrong. It was my fault. I sinned. But it was the schizophrenia.” I’m sure mental illness is a horrible thing, and for many people, can be treated. However, the defence of “not criminally responsible,” is not acceptable to Joe Public. Yes, these people may need to be locked up in a mental institution. But if they are murderers, they should never, ever be allowed out. Several years ago I actually sat in on a psychiatric evaluation for Layne Larose,

As for Luka Rocco Magnotta, there’s no question he was crazy. You don’t cut someone up - Sopranos-like - and mail body parts to politicians. There’s absolutely no way he should ever be set free, no matter how many drugs he takes. Real life is not a zombie movie, although perhaps some people, in their altered state, are turning zombie movies into real life. With body parts being mailed to their offices, maybe the politicians will finally take notice.

She doesn’t think she stands a chance in this contest, not that she cares much; she has no desire to be a princess. But that’s before she actually meets Prince Maxon, and discovers that he is far more than the stiff drip

he always seemed on TV. And before Aspen shows up at the palace, determined to pick up where they left off. Although “The Selection” falls into the currently red-hot young-adult dystopia category, it is on the lighter side of the genre. Illea’s society is far enough into the future to have relegated our countries to their history books, but technology and style is approximately analogous to the present day. The characters are the most interesting points, particularly feisty but compassionate America and the genuinely gentlemanly Maxon. But while romance is the crux of the plot, glimpses of the outside world hint at a more complicated story to come in subsequent books.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2012 Page 11 saying a ruling “cannot be expected sooner than 20 July. Another possible date for the right-wing extremist who has judgment is 24 August.” The trial itself is still admitted to killing 77 people in a bomb and shooting ram- scheduled to conclude on page in Oslo last July, says June 22, but an official verdict the verdict won’t be expected date had not previously been until at least one month after known. The court wouldn’t give the trial has ended. The Oslo District Court specific details about the timon Tuesday posted a brief ing, saying only that it is for statement on its website logistical reasons.

National OTTAWA-An infamous 2010 news conference to announce Canada’s plan to buy 65 stealth fighters cost taxpayers more than $47,000. The figure was revealed by Defence Minister Peter MacKay in a written response to an opposition question, tabled late Monday in Parliament. Liberal defence critic John McKay asked for details about the event, which saw MacKay, Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose and Treasury Board President Tony Clement pose with a fake F-35 built by manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The response shows Lockheed Martin offered up the model and transported it “to Ottawa via flatbed transport truck” at no charge. Jay Paxton, a spokesman for the defence minister, says almost half of the $47,313 spent by National Defence went to the audio-visual company that helped stage the event. He says the expense was

necessary because the news conference involved a number of national media outlets, as well as more than 100 invited guests. *** VANCOUVER - A woman’s claim for half of a $12.6 million lottery jackpot will go to a full trial, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled. The Lotto 6/49 ticket was purchased at a Surrey, B.C., market in November 2008 by Maria Fehr, allegedly using a $20 bill given to her by her husband. But Fehr’s business partner at the time, Maria Ganguin, claims the ticket was purchased using funds from their catering business and should be shared between them. The court heard the two women had an agreement that business funds could be used occasionally to purchase lottery tickets and they would split the winnings. Ganguin initially conceded the lottery ticket was not purchased with business funds, even signing a waiver

in 2008 confirming so at the request of the B.C. Lottery Corporation. Two years later, Ganguin sued for an equal share over suspicions that Fehr had bought the ticket using money from their coffee truck cash box.

International BELLEFONTE, Pa. - Prosecutors and Jerry Sandusky’s defence lawyers started the process of picking a jury for his child sexual abuse case Tuesday with a pool of 220 potential jurors. More than 600 summonses were sent out to residents in Centre County, the home of Penn State University. The process of finding the 12 jurors and four alternates could take days. Judge John Cleland addressed the prospective jurors in a sombre, packed courtroom inside the courthouse while, outside, scores of journalists lined the front lawn with television cameras and computers waiting for word. The prospective jurors

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2012

Moose Creek returns to playing shape a year later Golf in Saskatchewan is a natural pastime for many, but after southeast duffers struggled to find a game last year, things are looking much better for 2012. That’s certainly the case for the Moose Creek Golf Club that plays along the Alameda Dam res-

ervoir. When the course was first being planned, they were informed they could fall victim to a rise in water on the reservoir. Allan Faber, Moose Creek superintendent and greenskeeper, said the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority told them 10 years ago when the course was

being established there was a possibility they may have to deal with a one-in500-year flood event that may leave water over the Hole 1 green. “Well it was two feet under water,” said Faber. The green was submerged for a few weeks, and the second hole developed a new water hazard in the middle of the fairway. He said it was difficult to watch the waters rise last year, knowing they could do nothing but watch. “You work so hard to make it (a good course), and all you can do is watch it go under, but we’re lucky. We didn’t experience anything like what Estevan did.” Faber added that he has sympathy for the teams

at other courses, like the Woodlawn Golf Club, that had to deal with more severe flood conditions. Moose Creek was able to have a relatively full season of golf last year. The light snowfall the course experienced over the winter also hurt, as the sensitive new grass that had been reseeded last year was left more open to the elements than would have been ideal. “It was a very trying spring.” He noted the Kentucky bluegrass fescue died as a result of the water, but the creeping bentgrass greens managed to come out of the flooding in OK shape once the waters receded. Faber said he wasn’t entirely sure

how the different grasses would handle the excess water, but he has a strategy to move forward with the new grass. The places where the grass died were under water for between three to five weeks. The water was at its highest for two to three weeks, but only covered the first two holes. Faber said he’s been using more fertilizer on the new grass that was seeded after the water receded. “We’re still establishing the grass. It’s full of weeds, but they’ll get squeezed out.” He noted they were told that as a recreational park, they were last on the list when it came to help for flood protection. their homes, he said, they didn’t have any problem with where they sat for protection as residences should come first. Faber said the course is in good shape considering last year’s troubles. The water was over the bridge that led from the clubhouse to the first hole, so they had to send people on a trek about half a mile around the wet areas to get to the start of their rounds. “We have a bridge to No. 1 tee and people had to drive half a mile around to get to it. (The bridge) got cut off so bad, so we built a temporary bridge for carts.” Adding a new bridge meant golfers would no longer have to take a long detour to start their rounds. While the course suffered a little financially last year, Faber suggested they were able to come out even. With the shape the course is in this year however, he and other staff members are optimistic about the future at Moose Creek.

Canadiens find new coach in team history books NATIONAL MONTREAL - Michel Therrien is back as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. The NHL club announced Tuesday that 48-year-old Therrien will replace Randy Cunneyworth behind the bench. The Montreal native coached the Canadiens from 2000 until he was replaced by Claude Julien in January 2003. He was re-introduced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. The announcement ended weeks of speculation on who would be new general manager Marc Bergevin’s man. Former NHL coach Marc Crawford and the popular former goaltender Patrick Roy, now coach and general manager of the junior Quebec Remparts, were also believed to be top candidates. *** LONDON - Stephen Harper put up a valiant effort, but he was no match for Mo Zhang. The prime minister managed some impressive returns, but he was playing one of

four members of Canada’s Olympic table tennis team. Table Tennis Canada nominated Zhang, Andre Ho, Pierre-Luc Hinse and Eugene Wang — who just received his Canadian citizenship — to its team for next month’s London Games. The team was introduced Tuesday at Canada House in the British capital. Canada House, just steps from Buckingham Palace, will give the families of Canadian athletes a place to socialize and relax during the Olympics. The prime minister, an avid table tennis player, took on Zhang before the announcement. *** WINNIPEG - He’s got the pedigree, moves and desire and it looks like they’re coming together at the right time forAnthony Woodson to land a spot with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A running back with the hands of a receiver, he has already caught the eye of coach Paul LaPolice, who likes what the 2010 fourth-round draft pick brings to the table. “We were excited about

Anthony Woodson when we drafted him, LaPolice said after watching the Calgary native in rookie camp. “We thought he was a talented player. He’s a great kid who’s already got his degree (in business) and is really somebody I think is a good athlete, so he’s an impressive looking kid.’’ Those words brought a wide grin to the 24-year-old Woodson’s face. INTERNATIONAL NEW YORK, N.Y. - A mediator will attempt to settle a labour dispute at Belmont Park that threatens to scratch I’ll Have Another’s chance of winning thoroughbred racing’s first Triple Crown in more than 30 years. An official with the union representing maintenance and starting gate workers at the racetrack, which straddles the Queens-Nassau County line, says a mediator is meeting Tuesday morning with the NewYork RacingAssociation and union leaders. About 150 union members at NYRA’s Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga tracks have been working without a contract since February 2011.

The workers last month authorized a strike over overtime and scheduling. A strike would disrupt Saturday’s running of the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel in the Triple Crown. I’ll Have Another is trying become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. *** Boxer “Sugar Shane Mosley is retiring, ending a career in which he won titles in three different weight classes, beat Oscar De La Hoya twice and never was knocked out. The 40-year-old announced on Twitter that he was hanging up his gloves, saying he “loved every moment of it. Win, lose or draw. Mosley lost three of his last four fights, including a dreary bout against Manny Pacquiao in May 2011 in which he mostly seemed to be avoiding the Filipino star in the ring. His last fight was May 5 on the undercard of the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto. Mosley lost a lopsided decision to rising Mexican star Canelo

Report from the Legislature

First of all, congratulations to Jayden Dayman, the youth nominee from this constituency for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. I had the pleasure of joining Jayden, and his mom Shelly in Regina for the Royal visit, where Jayden was able to shake hands with the Royals and speak with the Prince. I was honored to nominate this outstanding young man for this award. Our government continues to make progress toward keeping an important promise we made that has implications for the health and safety for your family. The Year Two progress report from the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative (SkSI) shows we are on track to meet our commitment to provide all patients with the opportunity to have surgery within three month by 2014. We decided early in our first term to make your healthcare a priority and that hasn’t changed. The SkSI Two Year progress report shows that 97 per cent of surgeries in Saskatchewan were completed within 12 months. Since the Saskatchewan Party took office in 2007, the number of patients waiting more than 18 months for surgery has dropped by an impressive 91 per cent. These reductions mean real results for Saskatchewan people that were waiting far too long under the NDP to receive the surgery they needed. We have come a long way in the last five years, but we know there is still more work to do. That is why this year’s budget we invested $60.5 million to continue to drive down surgical wait times. In fact, this funding will provide more than 4,000 additional surgeries this year. Our commitment to putting the patient first can be further seen in almost $17 million more for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency which will help pay for 30,000 chemotherapy treatments, 39,000 mammograms and 6,000 new patient referrals this year alone. We have invested $4 million to expand the colorectal screening cancer program province-wide, providing early detection and saving lives. Today, there are 900 more nurses and 200 more doctors working in Saskatchewan than there were five years ago. Today in Saskatchewan, rural and remote areas have improved access to emergency services thanks to our partnership with the STARS Air Ambulance, which started flying the province’s skies earlier in the spring. Thirteen new long-term care centres to improve the quality of life for Saskatchewan’s seniors are moving forward with planning and construction underway. We have made going to medical school more accessible and affordable for young men and women who want to become doctors and nurses, through our graduate retention and student loan forgiveness programs and increased training opportunities. The Saskatchewan Advantage we talked about in the budget is about more though than just a balanced bottom line. It’s about more than growth for growth’s sake - it has to be if Saskatchewan is going to retain her place as a “have province in Confederation. The Saskatchewan Advantage is about improving the quality of life for everyone. It is about taking action to protect the advantage created by your hard work - ensuring our province remains the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family. To that end, Premier Brad Wall has charged MLAs to go out this summer and consult with constituents and community groups to find out how you think we can best meet the challenges of growth and opportunity. Our goal is to, with your help; make sure the historic economic and population growth we’ve enjoyed over the past five years continues. We want to find out three things: 1. What should the government’s long-term goals be? 2. What strategies or policies should the government pursue to achieve those goals? 3. What short-term measures can the government take to address some of the more immediate challenges of growth? If you have any ideas please do not hesitate to contact us at 634-7311 or send us an email at eagles.mla@sasktel.net. Effective June 1st, we are moving into our summer hours 8-3 from Monday to Friday. Together, we will maintain the Saskatchewan Advantage.

Has tennis girlfriend sidetracked Rory? It’s not a shock to say Rory McIlroy has a lot in common with Tiger Woods. But some of those similarities aren’t the kind McIlroy’s fans want to see. he makes on and off the golf course. They like the fact he’s likely the most popular golfer in the world, as Tiger once was. What similarity to

Woods that McIlroy fans aren’t too keen about is the one about his career being sidetracked by women. The jury is still out on that one, but ... Woods’s fall from grace has been well chronicled - his dalliances with dozens of women cost him his wife, his reputation and, coinciden-

tally or not, his golf game for a couple of years. McIlroy, as far as we know, is a onewoman man, but his romantic relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki is the reason, some say, that the Northern Ireland superstar is falling into pro golf’s “ordinary” atmosphere. Golf’s “superstar” pedestal, once the domain of Woods, is currently unoccupied. When he was 22, McIlroy led the 2011 Masters through three rounds before imploding on the back nine Sunday and finishing 15th. But he rebounded beautifully, winning his next major, the U.S. Open, by a remarkable eight strokes. McIlroy’s life was perfect - and he had the gorgeous No. 1-ranked Wozniacki on his arm as he ascended to the No. 1 spot in the world ranking. He was a rock star. Would Tiger catch Nicklaus with 18 majors? To heck with that hypothesis ... would Rory win 20? Lately, though, McIlroy has faltered badly. He missed the cut at the Players Championship in May - and then immediately jetted to Rome to watch his girlfriend play in a tournament. He missed the cut later that month at the BMW Championship in England - and then zipped

over to Paris to see Caroline. He missed the cut at the Memorial, one of two U.S. Open tune-ups he put on his schedule. Maybe it’s Caroline’s fault; maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s just because McIlroy is 23 and is enjoying the rock-star life for the first time. Maybe marriage and maturity will eventually reign and McIlroy will eventually wear the superstar tag. Some answers may be forthcoming this week at the U.S. Open in San Francisco. He’ll be taking on 155 other golfers in the field, not to mention millions of critics. • Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “The NFL says it will continue to play and broadcast its Pro Bowl game from Hawaii. The highlight last year occurred in the middle of the second quarter when two players nearly collided.” • Perisho again: “Former NFL receiver Terrell Owens was cut by the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. T.O. didn’t like the fact the Wranglers played in blue jeans.” • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “New York Knick Jeremy Lin has been ruled the owner of the trademark for ‘Linsanity,” to which New Yorkers are now asking

“who?” • Barach again: “Organizers say that a pint of beer at Olympic events in London will cost $11. To which Yankee fans are asking ‘What’s the catch?’” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Golfer and San Diego native Phil Mickelson has joined a group hoping to buy the Padres. Pundits like his chances of someday winning the World Series, as long as it’s not against the Tigers.” • NBC’s Jimmy Fallon, after Snoop Dogg threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a White Sox game: “And as predicted, the pitch was pretty high.” • Comedy writer Alan Ray, on the new Saints feature in the Madden 2013 video game: “When you score, you spike a quarterback in the end zone.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) WorldHerald: “Packers receiver Donald Driver said winning ‘Dancing with the Stars’ was about the same as winning a Super Bowl. What? To win the Super Bowl, you have to get past Ray Lewis. To take ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ Driver had to defeat the guy who played Urkel.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.com

MADE You LOOK!

Riders re-arrange roster By Rod Pedersen Voice of the Riders They blew up the team and didn’t even tell us. The fact dawned on me early last week while hosting my radio show and chatting with LeaderPost football writer Ian Hamilton. After gutting nearly every position on the field and replacing more than half of the coaching staff, the Saskatchewan Roughriders blew up their franchise from last year without notifying us of their intentions. After a 5-13 season in 2011, who could blame them? No kids, these aren’t your mom and dad’s Saskatchewan Roughriders. With training camp beginning this week at the University of Regina, let’s recap a busy off-season: • All back-up quarterbacks behind Darian Durant were set free, leaving four QBs with no CFL experience to battle it out in training camp for two spots. • Three starters on the offensive line (LT Alex Gauthier, LG Gene Makowsky and C Marc Par-

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider enteau) all left for various reasons and were replaced by LG Brendon Labatte and C Dominic Picard in free agency. The left tackle spot, the “blindside”, will be fought for in camp. • The franchise’s second all-time leading rusher, Wes Cates, was released in the off-season, leaving former NFLer’s Kory Sheets and Louis Rankin along with incumbent Brandon West to fight for the starting job. • Popular slotback Andy Fantuz was allowed to walk in free agency and no one seemed to care. • Three-quarters of the defensive line will be new. Only DT Keith Shologan remains, but you may have heard of Odell Willis, the controversial rush end who came over in a trade with Winnipeg during the winter. • All three linebacker spots are open, with the departures of Jerrell Freeman, Barrin Simpson and Sean Lucas in the off-season. • The defensive sec-

ondary is the only spot which could be unchanged with all five starters from last year’s final game back for another year. • And who could forget about the coaching staff? Greg Marshall and Ken Miller split the role of head coach last year, but both are out of the game this season. Rookie head coach Corey Chamblin, who turned 35 last week, has assembled an all-star cast on his staff. TSN’s Matt Dunigan said it reads like a “Who’s Who” of the CFL including Khari Jones, Jason Tucker and Barron Miles. But don’t be fooled; the co-ordinators (Bob Dyce on offence and Richie Hall on defence) are holdovers from last year, providing continuity and stability. So there you go. They thought they could sneak it by us, but we’re too wise! For whatever reason teams in all sports at all levels are deathly afraid of the term “rebuild” and perhaps that’s why you’ve never heard that term used by GM Brendan Taman over the past six months. But what would YOU call it?

Celebrate dad with humorous and sincere Father's Day quotations As we honor the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and uncles in our lives, here are some inspirational and funny words to live by. "To be a successful father, there's one absolute rule: when you have a

Make Dad happy with less traditional Father’s Day fare Getting ready to gift Dad for Father's Day? To those heading to the menswear department of their local clothing stores, do not even think about veering toward the tie display. Doesn't Dad deserve something a little more than a necktie? Father's Day celebrates the scores of fathers who get up early every morning and head to work to provide for their families. It also honors the men who devote their free time to coach baseball practices, lead scouting troops, run behind a bicycle while a child is learning to ride, and so many other fatherly tasks. Every year kids (and their moms) fret over what to purchase for the special man of the house. Maybe Dad has a hobby or interest that makes gifting easy. Too often, however, figuring out a Father's Day present can be a challenge. Although neckties top the list of go-to gifts, chances are Dad wouldn't

be upset if he didn't unwrap one this year. Instead, think about these less-cliche gifts. * "Of the month" club: Enroll Dad in one of those series subscriptions that sends him a new item to try every month. From fruit to books, there are many opportunities to find something he'll enjoy. Plus, this shows Dad he's special more than one day during the year. * Food basket: If the "way to a man's heart is through his stomach," a gift basket filled with his favorite treats will be a winner. Look for specialty items that he enjoys but seldom buys. * Sports game: Buy tickets to attend a game when Dad's favorite sports team will be playing nearby. Wrap the tickets with some team memorabilia, like a new hat or T-shirt. * Dinner for two: Although Father's Day is to celebrate the special bond Dad has with his children, a father who often sacrifices

his time to be with the kids may not have many private moments with the other special person in his life. Arrange dinner reservations for two, so parents can go out and enjoy a little adult time. * Fish aquarium: Tending to and watching fish can be a relaxing and

enjoyable holiday. Purchase Dad a new fish tank and accessories and make a date to go together to pick out fish to fill it. * Something to make chores easier: Think about the chores that Dad does but may not enjoy. Arrange for an easier way to get those chores done. For the

father who doesn't relish mowing and tending to the lawn, reserve a lawn-care service for a month or two to ease Dad's workload. * Automotive accessories: Oftentimes, a car or truck is viewed as an extension of its owner. Dad may adore his ride and items that will help

him wash, wax and buff it into a pristine vision will no doubt be appreciated. There are many Father's Day gifts to purchase or arrange that go beyond the stereotypical gifts bestowed year after year. Kids can make this celebration even better with gifts that really show they care.

Meat and potatoes ... it's the quintessential manly meal. Few men will turn down a dish of their favorite cut of beef paired with a delicious potato.

some fries certainly qualifies as meat and potatoes, perhaps Dad deserves a little more for Father's Day. Here's a meal that seems complicated but really is quite easy to make. Plus, the end product is a dinner that looks like it can be served in a gourmet restaurant.

mix

enough when pierced with a fork. You don't want the potatoes to fall apart. Remove from the oven and let cool a few minutes. Slice each potato in half. Use a spoon to scoop out the middle of each potato into a bowl, leaving a thin layer of potato on the skin. Add milk and butter to scooped potato pulp and whip with a hand mixer until fluffy. In a skillet, brown the bacon slices until crispy. Let cool and then chop into small pieces. Lay the scooped potato skins back on the baking sheet. Fill a pastry bag with the whipped potato mixture and pipe into the skins. If you don't have a pastry bag, simply scoop the whipped potatoes into the skins. Top with the chopped bacon, chives and shredded cheese. Bake again until the potato tops get lightly browned and are firm to the touch. Serve sliced pot roast and potatoes with gravy and a vegetable of choice.

Meal fit for father’s day

Children interested in creating a special day for dads this Father's Day may want to plan a few activities together, such as a game of baseball or hitting a few balls around the golf course. The afternoon can culminate in a meal that will make Dad smile.

Great gift ideas for Dad Father’s Day is right around the corner and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the perfect gifts for the men in their lives. Put away those coupons for neckties and remote control caddies. There’s a good chance Dad wants something a little less cliche and more in tune with his interests. If you think carefully about gift ideas, there’s bound to be something that will be a perfect fit. Sports If Dad follows a particular team or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jersies, game memorabilia, tickets to the next at-home game, or an expanded satellite dish or cable TV sports programming package are some gift ideas that will coordinate with a sports theme. Some dads also may be content to simply hit the links or spend a few hours at the batting cages. Personalized Gifts Personalized gifts can show that special man in your life that you care about him in a special way. Instead

of a run-of-the-mill item pulled off a store shelf, a personalized gift can feature a name, date or sentiment right on the gift itself. Think about giving Dad a personalized plaque that designates his work area in the garage or a pocket lighter or photo frame engraved with a special message or his name. An embroidered bath robe, or a golf bag embroidered with his initials may also be a special treat. Fit for Foodies As the adage goes, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Take advantage of these words of wisdom by gifting your Dad with food or culinarythemed items. Dad may be an amateur chef and will enjoy a cookbook by his favorite Food Network(TM) personality. Or he may have a restaurant he insists on going to all the time, so guaranteeing a gift card to said restaurant will be a hit. If Dad appreciates not only the taste, but also the culture of food, plan a tour of food shops in the area or go on a wine- and cheese-tasting adventure. Gear Heads Some dads get revved

up about automotive gifts, especially if they spend the weekends pampering their prized cars or trucks. If he tends to have a wrench in hand and head under the hood, treat your father to some new supplies for his automotive pursuits. Quality car waxes and upholstery cleaners are always in demand. Or give him a gift certificate to his favorite hand-wash, auto-detailing center. Gas station gift cards or a new ratchet set are other good auto gift ideas. Techies Some dads get excited about the latest tablets or smartphones. They may keep abreast of virus-detection software or think the technological gadgets sold in those speciality magazines and mall stores are must-haves. Chances are if you spend enough time with Dad you know just what he likes to dabble in, and you can get him an electronic device he’ll find invaluable.

If a severe storm is on the way, the weather service uses the local media and Environment Canada’s Weather Radio to alert the public. There are two basic types of alerts: A Weather watch is provided when conditions are favorable for a severe storm to develop. These are usually issued early in the day. It is a good idea to pay attention to the weather and listen to the radio or TV for up-dated information. A Weather Warning means that severe weather is happening or that severe weather conditions are very likely. A thunderstorm develops in an unstable atmosphere when warm moist air near the earth’s surface rises quickly and cools. The moisture condenses to form rain droplets and dark thunder clouds. These storms are often accompanied by hail, lightning, heavy rain, high winds and tornadoes. Thunderstorms are usually over in an hour, although a series of thunderstorms can last for several hours. Lightning –During a thunderstorm the air is charged with electricity. Bolts of lightning hit the ground at about 40,000 km per second – so fast that the series of strikes hitting the ground appear as a single bolt. What To Do When There Is Lightning: 1. Estimate how far away the lightning is. Every second between the flash of lightning and the thunderclap equals a300 meters. If you count fewer than 30 seconds, take shelter immediately. 2. If indoors, stay away from windows, doors, fireplaces, radiators, sinks, bathtubs, appliances, metal pipes, telephones and other things which conduct electricity. (You can use a cell phone) 3. Unplug radios, computers and televisions. 4. Do not go to rescue the laundry on the clothesline as it conducts electricity. If outdoors, take shelter in a building, ditch or a culvert but never under a tree. 5. If caught in the open, do not lie flat but crouch in the leap frog position and lower your head. 6. Do not ride bicycles, motorcycles or golf carts or use metal tools as they conduct electricity. 7. If swimming or in a boat, get back to shore immediately. 8. If you are in a car, stay there but pull away from trees which might fall on you. 9. You may resume activity 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Tornadoes Tornadoes are violet windstorms identified by their twisting funnel- shaped cloud. They are always produced by thunderstorms, but not every thunderstorm produces a tornado. They travel between 20 to 90 km/h, are erratic and can change course suddenly. Do not chase tornadoes. Tornado Watch means the weather could develop a tornado. Tornado Warning means a tornado has been seen or it is very likely that one will develop shortly. Warning Signs of Tornadoes: • Severe thunderstorms with frequent thunder and lightning

• An extremely dark sky sometimes highlighted by green or yellow clouds • A rumbling sound, such as a freight train or a whistling sound similar to a jet aircraft • A funnel cloud at the rear of a thunder cloud often behind a curtain of heavy rain or hail What to Do During a Tornado: If you are near a building: 1. Listen to your radio during severe thunderstorms 2. If a Tornado Warning has been issued take cover immediately. 3. Go to the basement or take shelter in a small interior ground floor room, closet or hallway. 4. Protect yourself by sitting under a heavy table or desk. 5. Stay away from windows and outside walls and doors. 6. Do not use elevators. 7. Avoid large halls, churches, arenas etc.: their roofs are more likely to collapse. 8. Stay close to the ground, protect your head and hide from flying debris. If you are driving: 1. If you are driving try to get to a nearby shelter –drive away from the tornado at a right angle. 2. Do not get caught in a car or mobile home – take shelter elsewhere. If no shelter is available, lie face down in a ditch or culvert away from the vehicle or mobile home. 3. If a tornado seems to be sanding still, it is either traveling away from you or heading right for you. 4. Stay close to the ground, protect your head and hide from flying debris. Hail: Hail forms when updrafts in thunderclouds carry raindrops upwards into extremely cold areas and freeze layer upon layer until they are too heavy and fall to the ground Hailstones vary in size from peas to grapefruits and fall at great speed. People have been seriously injured by hailstones. What to Do When It Hails: 1. Take cover when hail begins to fall. 2. Do not go out to cover plants, cars or garden furniture or to rescue animals.
