Cheers to the new Tim Hortons for their excellent friendly customer service!
Cheers to the Co-op for the Father’s Day craft the children made. My kids sure enjoyed it, and I enjoyed doing my groceries without the kids. Thanks.
Cheers to the entrepreneurship students who produced two solid companies and earned rewards at Junior Achievement last week. You make Estevan proud. Cheers to all the psychics and mediums who came to Estevan last weekend. It was nice to do something different for a change.
Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page
Jeers to dog owners who let their dogs off-leash anywhere in this city. Even if you think your dog will listen to you, they are still animals and can be unpredictable. I don’t like being scared when I am running or trying to enjoy the outdoors with my young daughter.
Jeers to a local hardware store where the owner treats customers like crap. If you say you’re going to do something then do it. Horrible customer service! We’ll take our business elsewhere and from what I’ve heard a lot of other people in Estevan are too. Maybe you’ll learn when you have no more business! Jeers to those who don’t look after their rock lawns and boulevards properly. They are not maintenance-free and actually require lots of attention, including a heavy-duty barrier, frequent cleaning and hands-on weed picking before the weeds are two feet tall! Please take a drive around town and really look at some of the unsightly “no maintenance” areas before you decide to re-landscape with rock. Jeers to dog owners who let their animals bark constantly day and night. Owners need to show some respect for others who have to listen to them. Thanks to the dog owner on June 15 in the Heritage Drive east section whose dog barked steadily from midnight to morning. Either you went way and left them outside or you are stone deaf. Next time the police will intervene.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Before you adventurous Arians charge right into those new projects, take a little time to learn where you’ll be going so you can avoid getting lost before you get there. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your time is devoted to career demands through much of the week. But Venus, who rules your sign, might be planning how (and with whom) you’ll spend your weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be put off by the surprising turn in the way your project is developing. You’ve invested enough time in it to know how to make all the necessary adjustments. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The work week goes smoothly for the most part. But a weekend visit to a place in your past could hold surprises for your future, especially where romance is involved. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A sudden attack of shyness for the usually loquacious Lion could be a sign that deep down you’re not sure enough about what (or whom) you had planned to talk up in public. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Deal with that job-related problem on-site -- that is, at the workplace. Avoid taking it home, where it can spoil those important personal plans you’ve made. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to let those favorable comments about your business dealings be known to those in a position to be helpful. Don’t hide your light; let it shine. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Avoid added pressure to finish a project on deadline by steering clear of distractions. To put it somewhat poetically: Time for fun -- when your tasks are done. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be uneasy about an offer from a longtime colleague. But before you reject it, study it. You might be surprised at what it actually contains. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deal firmly with a difficult family matter. It’s your strength they need right now. You can show your emotions when the situation begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recent dispute with some co-workers might not have been completely resolved. But other colleagues will be only too happy to offer support of your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let go of that Piscean pride long enough to allow someone to help you with a surprising development. That could make it easier for you to adjust to the change.

There’s a little narcissist inside all of us We are all the centre of our own little universes, but thanks to social media we may be increasingly believing our universe is the most important one of them all. The question of whether social media is creating narcissism or narcissism increases one’s use of social media hasn’t been answered. The answer in both cases is probably, obviously, yes. Got a promotion? Tell the world. Your wife just delivered a healthy baby? Post photos of that little runt on Facebook. Successfully tied your shoes this morning? Just try to fit something that spectacular into the 140-character limit. Tweet it! I’m not much of a Facebooker, but thanks to a culture around the office, I tweet. I tweet more than I should. I have sent out 750 short, stubby messages into the virtual world over the course of a year. It’s not just social media that allows me to broadcast my horrible, immature and ultimately irrelevant thoughts to the world. I also write a weekly column, which you happen to be reading right now. It gives me 600 words, not a measly 140 characters. My boss tells me I have to do it or else I’m fired, but it has still become a habitual platform for a one-way conversation. I get a little more self-obsessed as a contributor to a music blog, proposition365.wordpress.com where I, along
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers with two others, write posts about our thoughts on some of the greatest artists of the last century. Go read my thoughts on everyone from Cyndi Lauper to Al Green to Marilyn Manson. Of course, we columnists thinly veil our written words not as being narcissistic but as being that voice that starts the conversation. I throw out my thoughts on various subjects, from why women should come to Estevan to what it means for parents to prefer one child over another. As a reminder from that column, neither of my parents would choose me. Norm The Hitman Park’s All Things Considered surely spurs on a weekly dinner conversation at one table or another. Certainly not all of them will be conversation starters for everyone. I just hope somebody out there is reading at all. Are you out there, reader? Are all of my words purely self-serving drivel? In today’s world I have plenty of access to people. I can send my prejudices, beliefs and random, fleeting thoughts on an unsuspecting audience, though I’m not
nearly as connected as Mercury sports reporter extraordinaire Josh Lewis. He does much more branding than I. That’s what we call it every time we write something. It’s all about broadcasting and expanding our “brand.” I don’t know what my brand is. My columns are often sarcastic or mindlessly rambling, my Twitter feed is regularly profane (please do not read it), and those blog posts are about music and my taste in music can be a little, shall we say, otherworldly. I like to think I’m not deluded enough to expect anyone to take anything I ever say or write with more than a single grain of salt, but even so, I’m going to continue sharing all things Jordan with the world because it’s just what I’m used to now. It doesn’t come easily. The first few times you write a column it’s foreign and a little uncomfortable. There is plenty of self-doubt. It’s a strange thing to do but after enough repetitions it becomes second nature. That’s maybe the danger of social media. It becomes so normal to share and spew and link and tell everyone what we think that it becomes expected that everyone else really does care about little old us. We are all Sally Field and the people like us, they really like us. Except that they don’t, we don’t and nobody does. It’s a tough world out there.
Consumers must pay for clean beef It’s rather obvious there is at the very least a perception that drug use in livestock production is something consumers oppose. It’s the same when it comes to the concepts of genetically modified crops, and even using crop protection products against in-field weeds and insect pests. As a result there are, of course, pressures to change things. The problem is while consumers may hold some concerns, the majority are not willing to cough up more dollars to offset the losses farmers could face by stopping the use of such products. There are some that will pay more, and we see that niche in terms of organic food sales. But the majority of consumers would check mark concern on a questionnaire but won’t pay extra for foods, which have been produced sans such additives. So farmers, domestically at least, are sent some very contradicting messages, cheap food, yet produced without tools that are deemed to increase production. Yes, it can be argued organic production reduces costs by eliminating expensive chemicals and livestock feed additives, but there is the question of potential production loss, which means the actual impact on the farm’s bottom line is harder to determine.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist On today’s ultra large-scale farms organic production also becomes more challenging, as does feeding the growing population. Against all these questions regarding production choices, feed additives and genetically modified seeds have become a political tool, used by some countries as a barrier to imports. At present the debate over such additives is happening in the hog business. Ractopamine is an additive used in hog finishing rations. The additive is used to increase leaner carcasses desired by consumers, since there is again the general belief these days that fat is bad. From a producer’s perspective though ractopamine, a beta-agonist, offers a lot of potential production wise. The drug can increase carcass weight and dressing percentage and can also reduce the number of days to market, all benefiting the bottom line. Of importance to remember, racto-
pamine is approved for livestock use in Canada, the United States and many other countries. However, export customers, Russia and China, will no longer accept pork from animals fed ractopamine, which is an example of a barrier created by politics more than concrete reasoning. So there is a call in Alberta for producers opting to produce hogs without ractopamine in their diets to receive a premium. It would seem easy enough to have a production chain from farmer to processor, which could guarantee non-use of the additive. And since such production would extend days to market and thus raise production costs, there should reasonably be a premium paid. The problem, whether a Canadian consumer or an export buyer such as China or Russia, is having them be willing to pay extra for something they desire, and in the case of the export markets, demand. Ultimately, consumers need to be willing to pay premiums when their desires fundamentally alter how a farmer farms, and in so doing cuts into profits. Farmers need to offset such losses by better returns from their end users. At that point consumers can have a greater say in what farmers do.

Enbridge, Cenovus, Suncor make Northern Gateway pitch National ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland Stephen Harper is expected to chat with U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday as the Group of Eight summit comes to a close, the Prime Minister’s Office says. Harper and Obama are not scheduled to have an official sit-down meeting, but rather to walk and talk. The encounter comes the morning after a private dinner was held at the lakeside Lough Erne resort in Northern Ireland for the leaders of eight wealthy countries. Reports in the British press say the other G8 leaders pressured Russian President Vladimir Putin at the dinner to agree to a joint statement condemning Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime for attacking rebels with chemical weapons. Russia has refused to acknowledge that chemical weapons have been used. The United States, meanwhile, claims to have proof the Assad regime attacked its foes with chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin. *** TERRACE, B.C. - The panel weighing the future of the Northern Gateway pipeline heard Tuesday from industry players who support the project. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and Enbridge’s (TSX:ENB) partners in the project, in-
cluding Cenovus (TSX:CVE) and Suncor Energy, are scheduled to make their final arguments to the federal panel hearing in Terrace, B.C. A B.C. government lawyer addressed the panel on Monday, saying the project should not be approved as proposed. “Given the unique challenges of this pipeline, including the real challenges of responding effectively to a spill from either the pipeline or a tanker, Northern Gateway must be able to show that the mitigation it has put forward will be effective,” Christopher Jones told the panel. “The province submits it has not done so.” Outside the hearings, former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Geoff Plant, who is leading B.C.’s legal team at the hearings, said the evidence put before the panel doesn’t meet the province’s standards. “Northern Gateway is going to have to do something more, something better, somewhere else, to do that,” he said. International SAO PAULO - In some of the biggest protests since the end of Brazil’s 1964-85 dictatorship, demonstrations have spread across this continent-sized country and united people from all walks of life behind frustrations over poor transportation, health services, education and security despite a heavy tax burden.
More than 100,000 people were in the streets Monday for largely peaceful protests in at least eight big cities. They were in large part motivated by widespread images of Sao Paulo police last week beating demonstrators and firing rubber bullets into groups during a march that drew 5,000. There was some violence, with police and protesters clashing in Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte. The newspaper O Globo, citing Rio state security officials, said at least 20 officers and 10 protesters were injured there. Monday’s protests come after the opening matches of soccer’s Confederations Cup over the weekend, just one month before a papal visit, a year before the World Cup and three years ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The unrest is raising some security concerns, especially after the earlier protests produced injury-causing clashes with police. In Sao Paulo, Brazil’s economic hub, at least 65,000 protesters gathered Monday at a small, treeless plaza then broke into three directions in a Carnival atmosphere, with drummers beating out samba rhythms as people chanted anti-corruption jingles. They also railed against the matter that sparked the first protests last week — a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fares. *** WASHINGTON - President Barack

Obama defended top secret National Security Agency spying programs as legal in a lengthy interview, and called them transparent — even though they are authorized in secret. “It is transparent,” Obama told Public Broadcasting Service’s Charlie Rose in an interview broadcast late Monday. “That’s why we set up the FISA court,” he added, referring to the secret court set up by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that authorizes two recently leaked programs: one that gathers U.S. phone records and another that is designed to track the use of U.S.-based Internet servers by foreigners with possible links to terrorism. Obama added that he’s named representatives to a privacy and civil liberties oversight board to help in the debate over just how far government data gathering should be allowed to go — a discussion that is complicated by the secrecy surrounding the FISA court, with hearings held at undisclosed locations and with only government lawyers present. The orders that result are all highly classified. “We’re going to have to find ways where the public has an assurance that there are checks and balances in place ... that their phone calls aren’t being listened into; their text messages aren’t being monitored, their emails are not being read by some big brother somewhere,” Obama said.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2013
Lang rebuilding career after ACL tears National EDMONTON - It was going to be a breakthrough year for career backup quarterback Matt Nichols. But instead the 26-year-old Edmonton Eskimos signal caller formally ended his 2013 season Tuesday with the announcement he will undergo surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament on his right knee. It’s an injury, received in last week’s pre-season loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, that reinforced Nichols’ reputation for fearless play but also suggested the California native is fast becoming his own worst enemy. “I just went down and felt a little twist,” Nichols said last Friday after the injury in the 31-24 loss at Commonwealth Stadium. It was late in the first quarter when Nichols threw a quick slant pass to receiver Ed Gant. The ball bounced off Gant’s hands and was caught by Riders’ defensive back Carlos Thomas, who raced 30 yards untouched down the sideline to paydirt, led by defensive end Kenny Rowe. There was no one in sight, an easy pick-six in a meaningless game, but then came Nichols barrelling in on an angle, determined to catch Thomas at the goal-line. He ran straight into the path of Rowe who delivered a textbook hit to the shoulder. Nichols legs seemed to get caught
under him and down he went in a heap, clutching his right knee in the end zone as the Riders celebrated the TD. *** TORONTO - Her athletic trainers call it a “rebuild.” It’s the painstaking process of taking apart something that wasn’t assembled quite right and putting it back together properly. For Kara Lang, fingers crossed, the result could be a resurrected soccer career. “It’s just kind of one of those things where I have to try it,” Lang said. “Nothing is guaranteed when you really look at it. I just need to know that I tried.” The former Canadian soccer star is mounting a comeback, a chance to put some closure on a career that ended far too soon. The Oakville, Ont., native, whose two torn ACLs forced her to retire at the age of 24, said she’s been overwhelmed by the support she’s received since news of her comeback got out late last week, saying “all the encouragement I’ve gotten is going to push me even more.” Lang could use the push. Rehab hasn’t been easy. Since early this year when she put her broadcasting career on hold to commit to rehab full time, she’s spent three out of four weeks in Montreal, working with a team of trainers provided by B2ten — a private business group that
supports Olympic athletes. International WASHINGTON - George McPhee had to take a call. Alex Ovechkin was on the other line, reaching out to the Washington Capitals general manager shortly after winning his third Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. Ovechkin’s message to McPhee was that this latest award wasn’t just another trophy for his case. “This one means more,” McPhee said, “after what he’s been through recently.” After a sluggish start to the season saw the Capitals captain draw a lot of criticism, Ovechkin proved coach Adam Oates right for suggesting a move to right wing with a stellar second half. It was a tumultuous season for Ovechkin, as moving to right wing after playing on the left side his whole life took time and plenty of adjustment. It was Oates’ way to get the Russian star to change his game for the better, and the McPhee saw this MVP honour as validation of the switch and Ovechkin’s “coachability.” “He did not get enough credit for the willingness to change positions, security, what he knows, for the good of the team,” Oates said. “Yeah it was good for him, no question, but he had to have the faith that he was going to do OK and it was going to help the team because that’s how I sold it to him.”
Early on, it wasn’t a hard sell because Ovechkin’s offensive production had fallen off the previous two seasons. After being a perennial 50-goal scorer, he had 32 goals in 2010-11 and then 38 in 2011-12 only after a late tear. *** SYDNEY - Australia qualified for the 2014 World Cup by beating Iraq 1-0 on Tuesday, with Josh Kennedy heading home the winner in the 83rd minute to reward a bold substitution by coach Holger Osieck. Osieck made the surprising decision to take off talisman Tim Cahill and replace him with Kennedy, and the decision paid dividends when Mark Bresciano chipped a cross into the box, where the tall striker took advantage of lax marking to head past Noor Sabri in the Iraq goal. The goal sparked euphoria among the sodden but exultant home crowd of 80,523, curing the heightening anxiety among fans as the minutes ticked by without Australia being able to find a way through Iraq’s defence. A draw would have left Australia at the mercy of the outcome of the JordanOman game later in the day, with a likely relegation to third place in the group and a further playoff round. Instead, Kennedy’s goal meant Australia qualified directly for its third straight World Cup, and becomes the third team to book its place for the 2014 tournament after Japan and host Brazil.

Treating animal bites
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you tell me the best way to treat pet bites? I have three young children, and we live in a neighborhood where every family except us has at least one pet. Most are dogs. I don’t want to overreact to a tiny scratch, but I need to know what to do with a more serious bite. -- A.M.
that bleed, that are quite deep or are in a place, like the face, where they might be deforming should be taken care of by a professional. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

ANSWER: I’m limiting my remarks to cat and dog bites. Wild-animal bites require more involved treatment and are best taken care of in a hospital setting. A domesticated animal that has bitten a child or adult should be observed for 10 days to see if it exhibits signs of rabies. The threat of rabies is small, but maximal precautions have to be taken because rabies is such a deadly illness. Unprovoked bites from an animal raise the suspicion of rabies. Less-serious bites, the ones that can be treated at home, are copiously irrigated with sterile saltwater. Not many homes have sterile saltwater, so the bite should be washed with soap and water and then irrigated with tap water. After the irrigation, apply a disinfectant like Betadine (povidone iodine). Inspect the wound daily for any signs of infection -- skin redness or pus. If you see those signs, take the child to a doctor. If the child’s immunizations are up to date, all is well. If they are not, he or she needs a tetanus booster. If the child has had no tetanus immunizations, the series should begin right away. Wounds that are large,

The fifth annual International Bass Fishing Tournament was held at Boundary Dam reservoir on June 15 in spite of very high winds that caused some severely choppy waters. A total of 19 two-person teams still enjoyed the day-long experience and some good sized bass made it into the boat and back to shore long enough to be officially weighed before being released back into the lake.

Attach a basket to bungee for your beach goods • My best tip for the beach? A laundry basket and a bungee cord. I put my cooler, bags and beach toys in the basket and pull it along the sand using the bungee. It has worked for me many times -- and it’s so convenient to keep things corralled! Here are more tips on beach vacationing. -- JoAnn • Must-haves at the beach: Zipper-top bags for trash and clothespins to clip a napkin down so it won’t blow away! • “Freeze bottles of water (take out a sip or two to allow the ice to expand) and juice boxes or pouches before you head out to the beach (or anytime you’re taking a cooler). They will act as ice packs to keep food and snacks cool, and double as refreshing beverages along the way!” -- A.A. in Florida
• “My eyesight started to falter a few years ago, and I had found that my glasses slipped and were uncomfortable during seaside trips. I dearly love to read, and have since discovered audiobooks, or books on tape.
I download them to a digital music player and can listen all day if I like. It also allows me to people watch and even doze off! I am almost 80, so I can do that if I feel like it!” -- R.A. in Connecticut • “I keep an empty gal-
lon jug in the trunk of my car. When I go to the beach, if there’s no shower, I can fill it with water at a faucet and get a good rinse there before I leave.” -- L.G. in Mississippi • I bring a thin, nylon bag to the beach in case I go
shopping or collect shells, etc. It folds and zips down really small, so it takes no room, but has come in handy most times I’ve gone to the shore. -- T.T. in New York

Local 4-H clubs to mark one century The 4-H movement in Canada is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and local clubs will be adding a new dimension to their annual achievement days this summer to acknowledge the event. Four southeast Saskatchewan clubs will gather at the Estevan Exhibition grounds from July 6 to 8 as part of their annual exhibition romp with the rodeo crowd, while conducting their achievement day events plus some additional features. On Saturday, July 6, beginning in the morning, the Benson and Crossroads 4-H Beef Clubs will hold their annual achievement days in and around the livestock barns on the exhibition grounds. After the judging and grooming have been completed, a celebration of 4-H will begin, starting with an open house, or in this case, an open barn social at 4 p.m. for the general
public as well as all 4-H members and friends. This will be followed by a barbecue for all 4-H members, alumni, sponsors, buyers and friends. After the barbecue wraps up there will be a short program to acknowledge 100 years of 4-H activities that will include brief histories of each of the four participating clubs. Well-known local auctioneer and emcee Jason LeBlanc will keep things moving. After that, the dancing begins for people of all ages and all 4-H clubs. On Sunday morning, the Outram-Madigan and Browning 4-H Clubs take to the show rings and the grooming stalls for their annual achievement days. In the mid-afternoon, around 2 o’clock, there will be a judging contest for all young 4-H members who care to engage in the challenge. They will be required to provide oral reasoning for their decisions.
On Monday, July 8, the overall 4-H show takes over with the best beef-on-the-hoof from all four clubs making an entrance into the show ring in front of the professional judges. The clubs and their members will be graded on their showmanship, grooming expertise, stall maintenance and cleanliness. The results of the judges will be made known at 5:30 p.m., and that will be followed by the traditional sale of all the prize beef steers to local bidders at the annual Rotary Auction. “The 4-H Council is also teaming up with the local food bank so we’ll have food bins set up around the show ring areas where they’ll be accepting non-perishable food items for the food bank,” said Chad Ross, a 4-H leader. It’s just another way of celebrating a special milestone in the rich history of 4-H in Canada.
Never dismiss the background singers Opinion
Now that the most recent oil boom in Saskatchewan has leveled off to a quiet roar as opposed to a full-level blast, perhaps this might be a good time to reflect on Saskatchewan’s base strength. It always has, and we venture an educated guess … always will be agriculture, in some form or another. While oil, coal and natural gas, accompanied by uranium and potash and more lately, gold and diamonds cause the biggest
rush of activity and excitement, it’s good old farming that seems to always be there to prop the province up whenever it requires propping. Now it seems, agriculture is capable of doing more than just providing basics and being the prop up industry whenever the others inevitably ebb and flow. Agriculture commodity prices have remained strong enough to provide more than a “good enough” living and strong return for farm producers these past three years. And producers have been afforded the
luxury of being able to make some choices regarding crop selection, knowing that whatever they grow, the crop will find a market with a decent return. As with any business though, there will be exceptions, but that’s part of the game, part of the excitement if you will. Farming has always been a gamble and Saskatchewan farmers like to be all in when the final cards are placed face up each season. We won’t delve into a bunch of boring statistics that you probably already know regarding the economic importance
Quality Post Frame Buildings
of agriculture in Saskatchewan. It has always been up at the top or near the top of provincial cash flow and economic importance. Sometimes the politicians have paid attention to it, sometimes they haven’t and when they don’t, they do so at their own peril because while agriculture communities don’t mind being the backup band and background singers in the province with the rock star status right now, they also don’t like to be ignored. They know, and everyone else should know, that a rock star is only as good as their band and background singers. Farmers aren’t rock stars, but they do provide
some solid sounds. Potash is currently in a recovery mode with regards to sale volumes and prices. What drives potash … one of Saskatchewan’s diva industries? You get the picture don’t you? Our oil and gas wells are drilled on land that can continually produce crops, no matter what the price. The price of oil drops, the jacks stop pumping and as the well gets depleted, it eventually gets shut down. Not so with the surface soils and those who till it and manage it. It just keeps on giving as long as it’s treated with respect and as long as those who sow the seeds into it are given their rightful place in the
provincial pecking order. Maybe they are no longer at the top, but near the top every year, no matter what the price of wheat, barley, lentils, peas, cattle, hogs, soybeans or flax is. Whether that farmer is now a corporate entity with people in shiny shoes and three-piece suits providing direction, or a fast-disappearing, yet still viable family-based operation, they are important to the overall well being of our province and cannot be given short shrift or, heaven forbid, ignored. Never dismiss the background singer and the backup band. You need them … all rock stars know that.

Big 4-H judging clinic attracts over 80 members 4-H members from all across southeast Saskatchewan gathered in Weyburn in early May to participate in a judging clinic. The clinic turned into a complete success with more than 80 club members ranging in age from six to 21 registered for the full day of activities. Brittany Stepp
served as official hostess for the first clinic of its kind to be held in Saskatchewan. Clubs from Estevan, Weyburn, Wawota, Carlyle, Lampman, Colgate, Midale, Gladmar, Goodwater, Alameda, Manor, Stoughton, Trossachs, Ceylon, Minton, Ogema, Craven, Radville, Redvers, Balcarres and Wil-
cox had club representatives at the workshops. Informational booklets that provided tips on how to judge dairy and beef heifers, beef steers and light horses were distributed to all the young delegates. Three 4-H alumni judges were in attendance to provide assistance dur-
ing the hands-on sessions, especially when the younger members practiced judging the live animals. Lindsay Roysum assisted with the light horse categories while Stepp worked with those who were needing to be focused on dairy heifers. Erika Easton assisted with the beef animal
judging sessions. As the day wound down, those who participated in the event thanked Darren Haupstein, Mike and Carla Fellner, Roysum, Ryley Gutzke and Nicole Kmita for providing the stock for the day. The delegates also extended their thanks to area
business sponsors who helped ensure a successful day. Special thanks were also accorded to Patti Underwood and Karla Ness as well as all the 4-H leaders and parents who made themselves available to assist throughout the day’s activities.
Richardson International Limited announced June 10 they have invested $40 million to further enhance their Richardson Pioneer network of grain handling and crop input centres across Western Canada. The investment includes increased grain storage, as evidenced by a recent expansion of their storage and shipping system near Estevan, high speed fertilizer blenders, a fertilizer distribution centre and four new crop input locations. The just announced
investment strategy is the latest in a series of significant investments the company has made in expanding its operations across Canada. On May 1 Richardson acquired 19 grain elevators, 13 crop input centres, an export terminal in Thunder Bay and Viterra’s oat and wheat milling business. A month earlier Richardson stated it was investing $120 million to expand its Vancouver grain terminal. The company is also increasing capacity at its still relatively new canola pro-
cessing facility in Yorkton … boosting it by 25 per cent. That comes on the heels of the earlier announcement regarding expansion of a canola processing facility in Lethbridge. “We are always looking for opportunities to expand and diversify our business,” said Curt Vossen, president and CEO of Richardson International. “We are proud to be celebrating a century of growth with the 100th anniversary of Richardson Pioneer in 2013 and we will continue to grow into the future to meet
the needs of our customers at home and around the world.” As the year unfolds, the company said they intend to add 14,000 MT of storage capacity to each of its elevators in Carseland, Alta., Crooked River, Sask., and Shoal Lake, Man., to add to the expansion projects already nearing completion. Capacity in the three additional facilities will be boosted between 54 and 68 per cent. The company said it has been focused on increasing capacity at its grain facilities since 2007 and 18 of those projects have been
completed since then. Four former Viterra grain elevators — South Lakes (Stony Mountain) and Red River South (Letellier) Man., Kindersley, Sask., and Lacombe, Alta. — will each receive high speed blenders as part of the crop inputs expansion plan. They will also receive fertilizer storage and a 6,000 square-foot chemical and seed warehouse to become full-service crop input centres. Richardson is building a 35,000-tonne fertilizer distribution centre at Carlton
Crossing (Saskatoon). The company is also adding six high-speed fertilizer blenders at its Richardson Pioneer locations in Oyen and Magrath, Alta., Kamsack, Saskatoon and Shellbrook in Sask., and Shoal Lake, Man. Richardson International is Canada’s largest agribusiness and is also noted for its food processing as well as agriculture-based entities. The company, based in Winnipeg, has over 2,300 people on its payroll across Canada and the United States.

Huge 4-H global summit will be staged in Calgary
A significant global summit that will be hosted by Canada’s 4-H leaders and members will be staged in Calgary Aug. 19 to 25 this year. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 filed applications prior to the Feb. 15 deadline, hoping to be involved in the summit that will focus on one steady theme of feeding a hungry
planet. They aren’t just going to discuss and debate the topic, they are intent on forming an action plan, said 4-H Canada. The applicants were asked to make their pitch for participation by writing an essay of 2,000 words or less or recording a seven minute (or less) video about the challenges of feeding a hungry planet.
A total of 120 successful applicants will receive an expenses-paid trip to the global 4-H Youth Ag Summit, a week-long event in the Alberta centre where the ideas will be shared and opportunities explored with other young people, business leaders and scientists about the global agricultural challenge. “One revolutionary idea
could make history,” the 4-H team said in a release. Bayer CropScience signed on as the title sponsor for the summit and they noted that applications have been filed from Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Tanzania, United Kingdom
and United States as well as Canada. With the world’s population expected to exceed eight billion people by 2040, there is a pressing need to produce more food and have it grow and delivered more efficiently so the next generation won’t be hungry. There will be 40 4-H representatives selected from the Canadian appli-
cants to help serve as not only discussion leaders and facilitators, but also as hosts for the visiting delegates. This is the 100th anniversary of 4-H Canada, one of the country’s longest running and respected youth organizations. The organization boasts of over 8,000 trained volunteer leaders and more than 26,000 members across the nation.
Forage research chair decision applauded by all sectors The fact that a recent announcement from senior governments regarding the establishment of a new research chair at the University of Saskatchewan will focus on forage, has brought a positive response from the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC). The funding from the Saskatchewan and federal governments will amount to $1.25 million over five years. The forage research chair will centre on forage breeding with an emphasis on developing new forage varieties with improved yields. A dedicated forage research chair will result in new options for Saskatchewan producers to help improve profitability, competitiveness and sustainability in the long-term. “The creation of the forage chair is a direct response to industry needs,” said Gerry Ritz, federal
Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister. “Strengthening forage research capacity in Saskatchewan supports innovation for long-term profitability and sustainability for producers.” “We have heard from industry that better forage varieties are needed to assist with the long-term growth of the livestock industry in Saskatchewan,” said Lyle Stewart, Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister. “The new forage research chair announcement is a good step toward the expansion of Saskatchewan’s livestock and forage industries.” The announcement that was made June 10 spotlighted the BCRC’s national beef research strategy that they had developed during the Beef Value Chain Roundtable sessions that had been conducted by the Canadian beef industry stakeholders.
Their findings indicated a need for continued as well as a reinvigorated forage and grassland productivity capacity and research opportunity, so the new research chair will address this concern. “Forages are the foundation of Canada’s beef industry,” said BCRC vicechairman Tim Oleksyn, a cow-calf producer from Shellbrook. “Increasing forage productivity is more important than ever with increasing competition for farmland by other agriculture sectors and urban growth.” The new research chairperson will play an important role in future programs within Canada’s beef cattle industry science cluster, the BCRC said. This is a partnership between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and themselves to ensure that applied beef research funds
are allocated to research priorities and projects that have the greatest potential to benefit the competitiveness of the industry. The two government ministers said the creation of the research chair addresses a recommendation from the Beef Feed and Forage Review that was conducted in 2012. In addition, feedback from industry groups such as BCRC, Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Saskatchewan Forage Council and Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, highlighted the need for increased investment in forage research. The recommendations came from the Growing Forward 2 consultations held earlier that year. “The announcement is good news for Saskatchewan’s cattle sector,” said Harold Martens, Saskatchewan Stock Growers As-
sociation president. “New forage varieties will increase productivity on forage land, ultimately leading to improved profitability for cattle producers.” Mark Elford, Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association chairman, echoed those sentiments, adding that public investment in forage crop breeding research will provide an integral part to the cattle industry, “allowing producers to have access to new technology and forage management processes.” Aaron Ivey, president of the Saskatchewan Forage Council, said they looked forward to working with the new program researchers to strengthen the industry with the increased investment aiding in the improvement of plant performance through the development of new varieties, increasing profitability and reducing producer risk
while conserving land through environmentally sustainable grazing management. The Saskatchewan government added they have now invested $17.69 million into the support of a total of 15 research chairs at the U of S as part of a new strategic research program. The BCRC is Canada’s industry-led funding agency for beef research and it is funded through a portion of the producerpaid national levy that then leverages government research funding as it is led by a committee of beef producers from across Canada. Their mandate is to determine research and development priorities for the Canadian beef cattle industry and to administer national check-off funds allocated to research. It operates as a division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.
