Midale Central School principal retires after 19-year career By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

The man with many ties got a little teary-eyed on June 19, as students, teachers, and parents gathered in the gymnasium at Midale Central School to bid their longtime principal farewell. Lloyd Morrison retired from his post as principle at MCS after 19 years, and the assembly dedicated to his departure on the afternoon of June 19 was filled with laughter, applause, and an overall positive vibe. As the assembly came to an end, Morrison acknowledged the support from staff and close friends, and underlined the feeling that it was students who made his time at MCS so memorable. “The kids are what kept me here,” he said. “The things they’ve done here today are just wonderful.” The assembly consisted largely of students from each grade making special presentations for Morrison. It started with an acrostic poem using Morrison’s name, followed by a slide show, and even videos, one of which was a funny jab at what the retiring principal did in his office when no one was around. The higher grades read poems, presented gift baskets, and the grade 12s capped the presentations off with a group hug. As they returned to their seats, they shared high-fives with some of the kindergarten students sitting up front. “The kids feel like one big family in this building,” said Morrison, adding that feeling of togetherness was established in large part because of the school’s mentorship program, which pairs up elementary and high school students once a week for lunch. It’s been partly funded by the School Community Council, and MSC was the first school in Saskatchewan to introduce this initiative eight years ago. “The SCC and community support for this school has been great,” said Morrison, while noting the Smart Boards that Cenovus Energy put in place for the students two years ago. “They’ve become important learning, and teaching tools at this school.” The rapid advancement of technology was another aspect of his teaching career Morrison acknowledged. From the old IBM typewriters, to the much more advanced desktop computers, and now Smart Boards. “I’ve been through every change that’s come along the past few years, some of them good some of them bad,” he said. “I’m not a big technology geek, but I think these kids have all the equipment and tools they need to use for a positive learning experience.” Shelley McKenzie, a teacher at MSC, credited Morrison for helping create a “safe haven” for students, and said his humour is an important part of his teaching style. “The kids really like that because they can connect to it,” she said.

The MCS gym was filled with students, teachers, parents, and friends. Despite the difficult situation that took place during 2011 and 2012, which involved a teacher from MSC and a grade 12 student having sexual relations, Morrison said his drive to do what’s right for students was, above all else, at the top of his mind. As a result, the situation was handled professionally, and was something the school was able to move forward from. “I’ve been involved with letting teachers go, and hiring teachers, and when difficult situations arise, you can’t sweep them under the carpet, it has to be dealt with. As an STF councillor, and as a principle looking out for the students, I did what I had to do.” One of the highlights of the assembly involved a video presentation made by a couple of high school students, who were interviewing Morrison a few weeks prior. The question was raised, as to what was Morrison’s funniest memory. He said he failed to put a cigarette out one day during his break, and put it in his pocket. The gym roared with laughter.

Workers need to remember accidents happen Yes, summer has rolled in like that cute alley cat you wish had stuck around a little longer during a trip to the mailbox, and with it, the quest for summer employment begins for many high school, and postsecondary students. The excitement of finally obtaining that job, or to be more accurate, the excitement of knowing you’re going to get a regular flow of money, is matched only by the sudden disgruntlement one attains at the mention of three words on their first day in: Health and safety. A friend of mine recently started working at a grocery store for the summer. “Oh the first day was so boring,” she said, “safety this and safety that,” she continued. I certainly can’t deny the frustration I felt in these situations. I’ve nearly passed out while watching health and safety videos, which included the mass of 80’s chemically-treated hair and humdrum dialogue, and after going through the same process in multiple retail positions, I hardly took these sessions seriously. Then, I started working construction one summer. It was for a small concrete company my friend’s father owned, and it was filled with dudes who had been working there for years. There are death stares, and then there are death stares with the ability to destroy a planet, and I was receiving the latter on my first day at work. In an attempt to display my competence, I refused to ask for help on my first few days, and relied on instructions to be passed on to me casually through conversation. Either that, or I just watched what others were doing and did my best to copy them. It wasn’t terribly difficult to figure out the routine, the work consisted mostly

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling of hammering two-by-fours together, placing plywood forms in position before the wall was poured, and then removing them by hand. Oh, and lifting, a lot of heavy lifting. Refusing to ask for assistance was a mistake. Luckily, I never injured myself seriously, but I still suffered some consequences. My back took a beating as a result of lifting things with nothing but my arms and lower back, and there were multiple instances where I climbed up a wall, hammered away at something at an impossible angle with no safety net whatsoever, or tried to keep up with everyone else by taking shortcuts. Taking shortcuts on the work site always involves minimizing a safety element, and it’s something one must avoid doing entirely. I fell into the category the Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board referred to in the Leader-Post recently, which highlighted a specific group of people who are more susceptible to accidents at work. In the article, Phillip Germain, vice-president prevention and employer services for WCB said, “the youth workplace injury rate in the province is higher, so those under the age of 25, their injury rate is higher than those over 25.”

According to the WCB, July and August are the time of year when most workplace injuries occur, and they often occur in hospitality, retail, and, of course, construction industries. A recurring theme throughout the article was the importance of feeling safe at work, and asking questions, something I luckily didn’t suffer serious consequences from when I pretended to know exactly how to do things while working with concrete. A local construction company, and a few workers within the agency, recently received fines for allowing people to enter a trench to work on some service lines, before stabilizing it with a safety cage a few years ago. The trench, then caved in, and seriously injured one of the guys working there. I can imagine myself in that situation years ago, all gung-ho, trying to impress my co-workers, and quickly shrugging off any doubt I had in mind about the possible dangers that were staring me in the face. It’s that shred of doubt that employees especially young workers - must address in any given situation at work. Ask the questions when you’re unsure about something, no matter how mundane or obvious the answers may be. Even in retail, potential dangers may exist, and if you’re not satisfied with the answers your superiors give you, do not be afraid of being persistent in an attempt to fully understand what needs to be done, or how it needs to be done. Most importantly, do not be afraid of walking away when feeling unsafe, endure the stares of doom if it means arriving home at the end of the day, safe and sound, with a beer - or whatever you indulge yourself in after a hard day’s work - in one hand, and your well-being in the other.

Pay attention to our ecosystem It’s easy when you live in Saskatchewan to think of the beauty of a northern lake surrounded by evergreens. We look at the diversity of the parkland and understand there is a balance needed to ensure the diversity survives. But as we head south in the province we tend to see only a vista stretching to the horizon, which can be turned to grain production. It is easy to imagine the earliest settlers arriving on the Canadian Prairies, and seeing grassland they knew once tilled, sustain fields of wheat. It had to be a scene which would have been both exhilarating and unsettling, the sheer vastness of grain growing land laid out before those farmers who had only small plows, a couple of horses and dreams to take on the conversion of the wild prairie to crop production. But the Prairies are a unique and diverse ecosystem, and over the decades since the first settlers arrived, most of that natural system has been lost to the plow. So it is important we now focus some attention of preserving what remains. That is why the Native Prairie Appreciation Week, the 16th of which was marked June 1521, is important. The week, declared jointly by Saskatchewan Agriculture and Saskatchewan Environment, may not get the broad public awareness it deserves, but it is at least a step in a process to bring attention to the uniqueness of a natural prairie environment.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist The week, as you might expect, included tours and speakers, to give those attending a greater appreciation for native prairie. But the message needs to go to a larger audience. We as a society have to recognize of all the ecosystems in the province, perhaps none are more unique to Saskatchewan than its Prairies. The prairie environment is what supported the massive bison herds of our past. They are also home to some of the most recognizable and rare native species in the province, the swift fox, burrowing owl and black-footed ferret, among others. The ferret is an animal whose story tells much of the fragile nature of the prairies and its inhabitants. The black-footed ferret was thought extinct, and in the 1930s was actually listed as extinct locally in Saskatchewan. “We really don’t understand what happened to cause them to disappear in Canada,” said Pat Fargey, Species at Risk/Ecosystem Management Specialist with Grasslands National Park in Southern Saskatchewan in a 2010 companion

piece in Yorkton This Week. There is potentially an effort to poison coyotes, and in the past, similar goals were aimed towards wolves, likely to protect livestock, but Fargey said not all Prairie dogs were eliminated, so the ferret’s demise is something of a mystery. But a ranch dog in Wyoming would prove a hero for the black-footed ferret, when in the 1980s he brought a dead ferret to its owner. The colony was discovered and it would become a source of stock for captive breeding programs, which have led to releases of the animal back into preserved prairie habitat, including the Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan. The Grasslands Park is another aspect of a growing effort to keep the last native prairie as natural as possible. The same can be said for The Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan, (SK PCAP) a partnership bringing together 30 agencies and organizations representing producers, industry, provincial & federal governments, environmental non-government organizations, research and educational institutions working towards a common vision of prairie and species at risk conservation in Saskatchewan. In isolation, the PCAP, park, or Native Prairie Appreciation Week, would affect limited change in how we as a broader society see an expanse of native grasses, but by building one upon the other, the overall effort will hopefully achieve the greater appreciation we need to preserve the precious native acres remaining.

Militants mount fresh attack on Iraq refinery as US troops arrive in Baghdad erased Iraq’s western border with Syria and captured territory on the frontier with Jordan, al-Maliki’s focus has been the defence of Baghdad, a majority Shiite city of 7 million fraught with growing tension. The city’s Shiites fear they could be massacred and the revered al-Kazimiyah shrine destroyed if Islamic State fighters capture Baghdad. Sunni residents also fear the extremists, as well as Shiite militiamen in the city, who they worry could turn against them. The militants have vowed to march to Baghdad and the holy Shiite cities of Najaf and Karbala, a threat that prompted the nation’s top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, to issue an urgent call to arms that has resonated with young Shiite men. The military’s besttrained and equipped forces have been deployed to bolster

Baghdad’s defences, aided by U.S. intelligence on the militants’ movements, according to the Iraqi officials, who are close to al-Maliki’s inner circle and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss such sensitive issues. The number of troops normally deployed in Baghdad has doubled, they said, but declined to give a figure. Significant numbers are defending the Green Zone, the sprawling area on the west bank of the Tigris River that is home to al-Maliki’s office, as well as the U.S. Embassy. Iraq’s best-trained and equipped force is a 10,000-strong outfit once nicknamed the “dirty division” that fought alongside the Americans for years against Sunni extremists and Shiite militiamen. Now it is stretched thin, with many of its men deployed in Anbar province in a months-long standoff with Sunni militants who have since January con-

trolled the city of Fallujah, 30 miles (50 kilometres) west of Baghdad. The Iraqi military, rife with corruption and torn by conflicting loyalties, lacks adequate air cover for its ground troops and armour, with the nation’s infant air force operating two Cessna aircraft capable of firing U.S.-made Hellfire missiles. That leaves the army air wing of helicopter gunships stretched and overworked. While Iraq’s security forces number a whopping 1.1 million, with 700,000 in the police and the rest in the army, corruption, desertion and sectarian divisions have been a major problem. With a monthly salary of $700 for newly enlisted men, the forces have attracted many young Iraqis who would otherwise be unemployed. Once in, some bribe commanders so they can stay home and take a second job, lamented the officials.

Putin allows Russian military in Ukraine MOSCOW - On Russian President Vladimir Putin’s request, the upper house of Russian parliament on Wednesday cancelled a resolution allowing the use of military in Ukraine. The vote comes a day after Putin asked lawmakers to rescind his earlier request for using troops in Ukraine. He said that his move is intended to help support peace process in Ukraine, which began a weeklong cease-fire Friday. Putin needs to show his support for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s

peace plan ahead of Friday’s European Union summit to avoid further Western sanctions. The EU has warned it could introduce new sanctions that would target entire sectors of the Russian economy if Moscow fails to help de-escalate the crisis. On Tuesday, Putin urged Ukraine to extend the truce and sit down for talks with the rebels. He argued that the Ukrainian demand that the insurgents lay down their weapons within a week was unrealistic, explaining that they would be reluctant to disarm for fear of government reprisals. He also

Putin’s March 1 request to parliament for the use of military in Ukraine came days after Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was chased from power following months of street protests. Russia sent troops that quickly overran Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, setting the stage for Russia to annex it after a hastily called referendum. In April, a mutiny erupted in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian insurgents seized official buildings, declared their regions independent and fought government troops.

called on Ukraine to adopt constitutional amendments and other legal changes that would protect the rights of Russian-speakers in the east. The cease-fire has been repeatedly broken by sporadic clashes, and it was violated again Tuesday when rebels used a shoulder-fired missile to down a Ukrainian military helicopter, killing nine. The attack, which came after the rebels pledged to respect the cease-fire, prompted Poroshenko to warn that he may end the truce ahead of time.

ers, intelligence analysts, commandos and support personnel needed to set up a joint operations centre in the Iraqi capital. Another four teams of special forces would arrive in the next few days, Kirby said. They will evaluate the readiness of the Iraqi troops and their senior headquarters commanders in an effort to determine how best the U.S. can strengthen the security force and where other additional advisers might be needed. Iraqi officials said the U.S. advisers were expected to focus on the better units the Americans had closely worked with before pulling out. Combined with approximately 360 other U.S. forces in and around the American Embassy in Baghdad to perform security, they would bring the total U.S military presence in Iraq to about 560. Baghdad. The refinery is located in the heart of the Sunnidominated areas in northern Iraq, where the militants have swallowed large swaths of land since June 10. Along with a nearby power plant, the refinery supplies Iraq with a third of its refined fuel and nearly a tenth of its electricity, according to Barclays analysts. Militants attacked the site again early Wednesday but were beaten back by government forces, said Col. Ali al-Quraishi, the commander of Iraqi counterterror forces at the scene. He said his men exchanged fire with insurgents when they tried to attack a nearby oil pipeline, wounding one solider. Across the border, Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency reported that three Iranian troops were killed in an attack Tuesday night by an unspecified “terrorist group” near the border with Iraq. While it is not clear which group was behind the attack in Iran’s western Kermanshah province, the incident highlighted the risk of spillover from the Sunni militants’ assault into Shiite powerhouse Iran. Iran, which has strong ties with Iraq’s Shiite-led government, has boosted border security amid advances by the militants. President Barack Obama last week announced he would send as many as 300 advisers into Iraq to assess and advise Iraqi security forces. The U.S. Defence Department said Thursday that some of those personnel are now in Baghdad. U.S. Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said they included two teams of special forces and about 90 advis-

BAGHDAD Sunni militants launched a dawn raid Wednesday on a key Iraqi oil refinery they have been trying to take for days but were repelled by security forces, a commander on the scene said, as dozens of newly arrived U.S. military advisers and special operations forces began assessing the Iraqi forces in an effort to strengthen Baghdad’s ability to confront the insurgency. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government is struggling to repel advances led by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a well-trained and mobile force thought to have some 10,000 fighters inside Iraq. The response by government forces has so far been far short of a counteroffensive, restricted mostly to areas where Shiites are in danger of falling prey to the Sunni extremists or around a major Shiite shrine north of Baghdad. Iraqi officials have told The Associated Press that al-Maliki is ready to at least temporarily concede the loss of large swaths of territory to Sunni insurgents as he deploys the military’s best troops to defend Baghdad. Shiite militias responding to a call to arms by Iraq’s top cleric are also focused on protecting the capital and Shiite shrines, while Kurdish fighters have grabbed a longcoveted oil-rich city outside their self-ruled territory, ostensibly to defend it from the al-Qaida breakaway group. Government forces backed by helicopter gunships have fought for a week to defend Iraq’s largest oil refinery in Beiji, north of

Christine Elliott, Flaherty’s widow, to make bid to lead Ontario Tories: sources National TORONTO - Sources say the widow of former federal finance minister Jim Flaherty plans to take another shot at leading Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives. Christine Elliott is expected to announce today that she’s entering the race to succeed Tim Hudak, who will be stepping down as PC leader when the legislature returns on July 2. Aspokeswoman told The Canadian Press she couldn’t confirm Elliott would be making a leadership bid, but said she’d make an announcement “regarding her future and the future of the party.” Elliott finished third when Hudak won the Tory leadership race in 2009. Flaherty had failed in his 2002 and 2004 bids to lead the Ontario Tories. Elliott’s name was put forward as a possible favourite after Hudak announced he was stepping down following the crushing defeat of his party in the June 12 election. Elliott is deputy leader of the party and has served as critic for the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Mental Health Reform. There could be a crowded field in the running to take Hudak’s job. Tory MPP and labour critic Monte McNaughton said he is also “seriously” considering a run for the leadership. “I’ve spent every day since the election making calls to party activists across the province and to caucus members,” he told The Canadian Press. “I really am overwhelmed and humbled by the support that I’ve been receiving across Ontario.” Tory energy critic Lisa MacLeod, who once worked for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, appears to be testing the waters, penning a column in the Toronto Star calling for a new leader “who understands urban, suburban and rural concerns.” Her Ottawa riding of Nepean-Carleton “is a microcosm of the growing and changing Ontario that our party must represent,” she wrote Tuesday. There’s also a campaign underway by some party activists to draft federal Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt into the race. Other names mentioned as possible candidates include Tory MPP and finance critic Vic Fedeli, as well as party president Richard Ciano. Educated as a lawyer, Elliott entered politics when she won a seat in Whitby, east of Toronto, in the March 2006 byelection. During the 2009 leadership race, Elliott preached fiscal conservatism and social responsibility — very different from Flaherty who during his 2002 leadership bid proposed jailing the homeless. Following the June 12 election, Elliott said it was “a combination of things” that drove voters from the PCs to the Liberals. “We ran a principled campaign and I’m very proud, (but) it just wasn’t meant to be,” she said. *** TOTTENHAM, Ont. - Environment Canada confirms that a low intensity tornado struck a rural area near Tottenham, Ont., north of Toronto on Tuesday afternoon. Environment Canada says its survey teams have rated the tornado as an EF-1 with maximum winds between 135 and 175 km/h. ”We had a team go out last night (Tuesday) to do a preliminary investigation and that’s how we got the EF-1 reading,” said meteorologist Kelly Hobelman. She said a larger team was to check the area in the morning to determine the exact length of the tornado‘s path, adding that it appeared the path could exceed 10 kilometres. ‘‘We had damage reports of a house which had a garage damaged and part of their roof damaged as well and a barn was damaged,”

Sometime in the last week or two an unknown person or persons broke into a house on a farm just north of North Portal. Most of the furniture and belongings inside the house suffered damage and a number of windows in the residence were broken out. As well, a motorhome and a minivan on the property were broken into and had their windows smashed as well. Initial indications are that nothing was stolen and that the culprits’ only motive was to cause as much damage as possible. Anyone with information regarding this incident or any other criminal offences is asked to contact the local RCMP at 637-4400 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or 1-800-222-TIPS.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 2014

CBSA asks travellers to plan ahead The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reminds travellers to plan ahead this Canada Day holiday. The CBSA is expecting higher traffic volumes throughout the weekend and into Monday and Tuesday. If you’re a holiday planner to the max, you’ll love the tools on the CBSA mobile site, like the Duty and Taxes Estimator: www.cbsa-asfc. gc.ca/travel-voyage/dte-acl/

est-cal-eng.html. Here are more smart crossing tips. 1. Beat the border rush. Cross at a non-peak time. Regardless of your routing, try to plan crossing the border in the morning, especially if you cross on Monday or Tuesday. Most lineups at the border start building in the afternoon and carry on throughout the evening. You can use Border

Wait Times services to check lineups at Coutts. You can also subscribe by Twitter (@ CBSA_CTS) to see listings on the go. U.S.-bound or Canada-bound information is available. 2. Keep travel documents handy. An officer will scan them. One of the best ways your family can save time returning to Canada is to make sure each passenger has

Apartments For Rent 1 & 2 bedroom Apartments Available Check us out on facebook

Fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave, central air, washer/dryer, references required, no dogs allowed

the correct travel document handy and ready to give to the CBSA officer. A passport is the best bet. If you prefer to travel light while on the road, an enhanced driver’s licence might be for you (available to B.C. residents only). Other acceptable forms of ID include: birth certificates with accompanying photo ID such as regular driver’s licenses; permanent resident cards; citizenship cards or certificates of Indian status. 3. Know your purchases, know where your receipts are, and know your exemptions and restrictions. If your family has purchased goods in the U.S., mailed gifts, or made major repairs or upgrades to your vehicle or boat, you will need to declare the total value of your purchases and back your claim with the receipts. Each

traveller is entitled to certain personal exemptions on items like alcohol and tobacco depending on the length of your visit, and this can save you money. Also remember that some goods will always be restricted in Canada, such as firearms. Take the time to know what you’re bringing back to Canada, and that time will pay dividends at the border. 4. Know the contents of your vehicles. It’s as important to declare certain items in your vehicle and/or boat when you return to Canada. For example, if you have food tucked away in coolers or organic items such as soil (for example, in a bait container) or firewood, make sure you tell the CBSA officer. These kinds of products are easily forgotten when you are cross-

ing, but could potentially create health and environmental problems for Canada. 5. Not sure? Ask the CBSA officer. The single best thing you can do to save time returning to Canada is to simply be open and honest with the CBSA officer. If you are not sure about what to declare, don’t hesitate to ask. The officers are there to help you. The CBSA encourages all Canadian residents to be border-savvy travellers and save time this long weekend by making a smooth return a “must-have” part of holiday itineraries. For these tips and more, watch our travel tips video to hear advice directly from officers, or read our travel tips fact sheet. The CBSA also has a mobile Web site for busy planners who like to stay connected.

and Washington learned he could be comfortable in a backup and mentoring role while with the Penguins. “I know what I needed to do to be ready if I have to play once every two weeks,” Vokoun said. “I think it’s a little bit mentally easier for an older guy who knows where he is (in his career) and especially if he was a starter. I don’t want to say you have nothing to prove — you always have stuff to prove to people. But you’re more calm and you’re not so worked up if you don’t play (all the time).” Almost a third of the league could be in the market for a backup goaltender, including the Toronto Maple Leafs if they trade restricted free agent James Reimer, the Calgary Flames and the Winnipeg Jets. Teams could begin talking to pending unrestricted free agents at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday. The Penguins, who are in flux with new general manager Jim Rutherford still seeking to hire a coach, are not among the teams needing a backup. In December they signed Jeff Zatkoff to a twoyear contract extension late in the regular season, which was enough of a signal to Vokoun that he would have to head elsewhere. Vokoun has no hard feelings about that. “I cannot say one bad thing about Pittsburgh,” he said. “The way they treated me when I needed it most, especially getting me the help I needed, the doctors and everything, it’s an outstanding organization and it was a privilege to play in Pittsburgh.” Vokoun said it would be up to other teams to decide if he’s worth signing. Medically, doctors have given him assurances that the blood clots are a thing of the past and aren’t affected by him playing hockey — and vice-versa. Vokoun had a groin injury that ended his 2011-12 season with the Capitals, but that problem hasn’t flared up since. And four months of practising with the Penguins, getting hit with hundreds of pucks at a time, gave him confidence that game action with the stents in moving forward won’t be an issue. Playing in a European league isn’t an option, either, Vokoun said. It’s the NHL or skating off into the sunset, which is something he’s not quite ready to do. “It would be nice to play one more year, and we’ll see,” Vokoun said. “(I want to) finish playing and have a good season and walk away from the game and not as a guy who practises and sits in the stands.”

Severe blood clots took a full season away from Tomas Vokoun. The veteran goaltender hopes they didn’t end his NHL career. Vokoun turns 38 next week, a day after he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Save for a minor-league rehab stint inApril, he hasn’t played a meaningful game in over a year, but he’s fully healthy and hopes he can catch on as a backup somewhere. “I don’t feel like I’ve missed a season, if that makes any sense,” Vokoun said in a phone interview last week from his home in South Florida. “I know what to do, I’ve played the game for 30 years. I played over 700 games in the NHL, I know mentally what I need to do.” Mentally,Vokoun should still be sharp. He skated with his Pittsburgh Penguins teammates for four months after getting off a blood thinner and being medically cleared to practise in late January into early February. Physically, the Czech native said the syndrome that was contributing to an artery pushing on a vein — which doctors corrected by putting stents in — had “zero effects” on his lifestyle, even though the clots could have been life-threatening. “As soon as they let me out of the hospital ... within a week I could’ve run, I could’ve lifted weights, I could’ve played tennis, I could’ve played soccer,” Vokoun said. “I could’ve done everything I wanted to. It wasn’t like I was on bed rest for two months and I have to start all over. I kept myself in shape.” If Vokoun rounds himself back into even 36-yearold form, he’d be considered one of the best backup goalie options on the unrestrictedfree-agent market. He had a .919 save percentage in 20 games behind Marc-Andre Fleury in 2013 and since the 2004-05 lockout has never been below .917 over the course of a season. Some of the 35-plus goalies also vying for jobs next season include 42-yearold Martin Brodeur, who had a .901 save percentage while splitting time with Cory Schneider in New Jersey, 40-year-old Tim Thomas, who had a .909 percentage in Florida and Dallas, 36-yearold Scott Clemmensen, who had an .897 percentage in Florida and spent much of the season in the minors, and 34-year-old Ilya Bryzgalov, who had a .908 percentage in Edmonton and Minnesota. Vokoun understands if teams decide to go younger in goal, but the longtime starter in Nashville, Florida

FIFA charges Uruguay star Luis Suarez for biting Italian defender in World Cup match RIO DE JANEIRO FIFA has officially charged Uruguay’s Luis Suarez with biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in the teams’ World Cup match, a process that could lead to a suspension for Uruguay’s best offensive player. FIFA announced early Wednesday that its disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Suarez, just hours after the end of Tuesday’s match. If the panel finds Suarez guilty of assaulting an opponent, FIFA rules call for a ban of at least two matches up to a maximum of 24 months. FIFA asked the team to present evidence, which can include video recordings, by 5 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) Wednesday. A decision must be published before Saturday, when Uruguay plays

Colombia in a roundof-16 match at Maracana stadium. Uruguay advanced by beating Italy 1-0 on Tuesday in Natal. One minute before the decisive goal, Suarez clashed with Chiellini and was caught by television cameras apparently biting his shoulder. Match referee Marco Rodriguez of Mexico appeared not to see the incident and took no action. Brazil’s World Cup has been a high-scoring tournament featuring late goals, comebacks, full stadiums and underdog stories, but the bite was got much of the global attention Tuesday. Earlier in his career, the 27-year-old Suarez was suspended in the Netherlands and England for biting opponents. He didn’t confirm or deny biting Chiellini, but said he was angry that the Italian
