Party in Woodlawn for re-opening There is a lot to celebrate this weekend, and for those who have fond memories of time in Woodlawn Regional Park, the grand re-opening may be the biggest reason of all to party. The park has undergone a transformation since it was physically reshaped in 2011 by the rising waters of the Souris River, which cuts through it. The cleanup has the park looking as beautiful as it was prior to the flooding. The grand re-opening celebration on Saturday will feature horse-drawn wagon rides around the leafy grounds, giving all those who have yet to go back down to the park an opportunity to see all the changes that have happened. It will also provide a great opportunity for newcomers who haven’t yet been to the park a great way to experience it for the first time. Park manager Nathan Puffalt is excited to show off all the work that has gone into the park and while some areas are still a little sensitive, visitors will get an idea of how the park and campsites will be laid out later this summer. Due to some uncooperative weather this spring,
work on the campsites is a little behind. “We’re seeing a huge delay there, but it’s looking absolutely beautiful down there,” said Puffalt. “With this weather, it has left the ground really saturated, so if we put campers in there now all that grass that just got planted is going to get destroyed.” He doesn’t expect they will accept campers in some sites for another month or two. The hookups are complete and all that’s left for those sites is to put in some gravel pads. Early risers on Saturday can make their way to the park on Saturday morning for the pancake breakfast, which will be served from 8 to 10 a.m. After breakfast will be the opening ceremonies where the new logo will be unveiled. A contest was held, calling on entries for the new logo and Puffalt said they received a lot of quality submissions from many people around the community. “We got quite a few from a bunch of kids as well,” said Puffalt noting they received about 50 submissions. “It turned out to be really good. For the board of directors it was a very close decision. We
had one sure winner and then a second and third-place prize had a tie.” There will be lots of games and activities for kids and adults alike, with a flag football tournament and slopitch batting challenge as well as soccer and a short-game golf clinic at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club. In the evening, the big draw will be live music in the park, with headliner Codie Prevost, Saskatchewan Country Music Award winner of the entertainer of the year and male vocalist of the year. Further music will be provided by the cover band Mascara and Dennis Ficor and Son. All activities will be held at the Athletic Park, which encompasses the football and soccer field, Cassette Park and the Souris Valley Theatre. A bonfire will also be held in the evening. The park continues to undergo work, with Puffalt noting the fence will be up very shortly once the rails are delivered. New lighting will be completely installed by the weekend, though it won’t be running just yet. “A couple of the buildings still need to have some
renovations done,” said Puffalt, noting that work will happen once supplies are delivered. “We hope to have soccer on there the first week of July. The field itself is ready to go, the irrigation is all in.” The new score clock will be going up soon, as will all the sponsorship signs. “Everything has been coming along real well.” Fundraising continues to trickle in for the park, and Puffalt said it’s great to see the many other things that are donated, like people’s time and materials. “The real success story with all of this is seeing all these groups come together and work together for one of the first times in recent memory. They’ve done a phenomenal job of working together and getting Woodlawn up and running.” The equipment and materials were recently donated to install the piles for the lights, which amount to about $20,000 in savings for Woodlawn. That work was done last week. Puffalt said the corporate support as well as that from the City and the RM of Estevan has been very appreciated. This year, he hopes that
all work on the buildings is complete and the gravel parking lot is finished. “Cosette Park (committee) is going to be doing a bit of work down at their field,” said Puffalt, noting Joe Lingelbach will continue to work feverishly at Met Stadium.
“He spends more time in Woodlawn than some of my employees,” joked Puffalt. A donation wall will also be going up later this year, recognizing the many sponsors and donors who have supported the park since the flood.

Summer attire never gets tiresome Summer is a time when people get to experiment with the fun side of the fashion world. Maybe your beaver pelt jacket wows jealous passersby in the winter months, but summer is where freedom reigns supreme in fashion. Who doesn’t like sundress season? In the summer, we all get to really express ourselves through our attire, whether it is glorious, conservative or casual. I remember when the thermometers turned beet red in the middle of May, there would always be a charming announcement over my high school’s PA system reminding all the girls in the school that what may make for weather-appropriate duds, may not perfectly align with school-appropriate wear as outlined in the student handbook nobody ever read. I consider myself something of a fashion black hole. It’s not something that concerns me because for me, clothing serves a very functional purpose, just like food. It’s a very single-guy outlook, but it doesn’t need to taste very good as long as it’s cheap and fills you up. Clothes are the same. Despite that, I do have what I would consider workplace clothing and real-life clothing. I think everybody does. I don’t have a uniform of any kind so I still have
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers some control over my appearance on the job. As a summer reporter between semesters at school, I never batted an eye at the idea of wearing shorts to work, a ball cap pulled tightly around my mop of hair. I had longer hair back then too, because I was an idiot punk kid like everyone is. I could get away with it because I was the student. A co-worker I dubbed Ad-Man Steve was not impressed with my choice in clothing. As a summer student I brushed him off as a “square,” because I think that was still appropriate slang just six years ago when this would have been my life. The office attire I’m comfortable with has changed since then. I don’t wear jeans or shorts to work. I’m a big boy now. Dress pants are too formal for my position as a poor writer of words, so my go to fall-back staple is slacks. Brown slacks go with everything, and are there non-brown
slacks made for men? Daily, I present a very earthy motif of brown on yellow, green or red. Last week I mentioned a reporter’s writing is all about his brand, well so is our clothing. I’m presenting a front that wishes for simpler times and outdoor getaways. We have a style, and we stick with it. We don’t want to interrupt the “narrative,” as someone around the office put it, though he was referring to his popular ride. Clothing does say a lot about a person. A nice conservative pair of slacks and a polo says exactly what I want it to say: business casual, with an expressed emphasis on casual. It’s not exactly a day at the beach, but it’s pretty relaxed. It’s not meant to impress. In fact, it’s meant to go unnoticed. The lovely ladies around the office get behind the season’s fashions enough for the rest of us. I just need to blend into the woodwork and whisk attention back toward them. There’s really nothing to see here. Muted colours are in this summer. Pastels and tan loafers are man’s best friend in the most stylish of summer months. We don’t need to get very gaudy. We just need clothes that work, whether that’s out of an office or on a rig.
Interest in organic foods growing Sitting at my favourite coffee shop the other day, talk of organic food came up. It started with mention that the sign for an organic food market was still hanging in a local strip mall window, but there hadn’t been many whispers going around when it might open. There was also the question brought about just how large a market there is for organic foods in a city such as Yorkton, which is still relatively closely grounded in its agrarian roots. Certainly there is growing interest in what we eat, but for most, that does not mean a ‘must-have’ commitment to buy only organic fare. That said, major food retailers have obviously seen the trending interest in organic foods and now have aisles dedicated to the niche. The issue of course is what constitutes organic. Government-verified standards for organics around the world are rather variable, if they exist at all. And there is a question about how far one, as a producer, wants to take organic production. Livestock producers in particular face issues such as whether to vaccinate stock, and if an animal is sick do they turn to medications to cure the animal.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist Even organic grain producers must face hard choices, such as watching a crop being lost to insects when their neighbours are protecting their crops with insecticides. From the consumer perspective, the best source of organic is from your own garden where you can ensure exactly what is and isn’t applied to the garden. In most cases, that means using common sense, even for those not dedicated to organics. I do not recall my parents spraying the garden simply for the sake of spraying. That said, when cabbage moths attacked, they would most certainly powder the patch to protect part of the food to be put away for the winter. If a person has no place to plant a garden, or does not want to get dirt under their fingernails, then dealing with a local producer directly, building rapport and trust, is the best avenue to ensure organic food is on the table.
In my own case I do understand being concerned about what we eat. Goodness knows a look at the list of additives in many processed foods is enough to raise questions, without even thinking about what a farmer did to the crop to grow it. But therein lies the conundrum for someone like me. I get the want for safe food and that too many chemicals might be reason for concern. Then I shower and ready myself for work using shampoo, rinse, body wash, aftershave, cologne, toothpaste, mouthwash, antiperspirant and wonder what exactly is in each one I apply to my skin daily. If I were a woman the list would include a much longer list of beauty products. We also are quick to down athletic rehydration drinks, drinks that keep us awake by ‘giving us wings’, and down over the counter medicines for every headache, muscle strain and cough we have. That is not to suggest these products are not safe, but they are not safer than the wheat grown on a Canadian farm either. Health awareness is a good thing, but it does not need to completely determine everything we eat or how it is reasonably produced.

Montreal finds new mayor for short term National MONTREAL - Montreal is set to get another interim mayor. City council will make the choice at a meeting scheduled for today. There are five candidates in the running to take over for Michael Applebaum, who stepped down as interim mayor last week after being arrested on corruption-related charges. Applebaum had replaced Gerald Tremblay, who also resigned after facing allegations of corruption. The new mayor won’t be in office for long with a municipal election is scheduled for November. The five candidates are all council members — Laurent Blanchard, Harout Chitilian, Jane Cowell-Poitras, Francois Croteau and Alan DeSousa. *** TORONTO - The cases of two terror suspects charged in an alleged plot to attack a Via Rail passenger train are stalling because one can’t find a lawyer who will try convincing the court to judge him by the Qur’an. Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser appeared via video in court today and are set to return Aug. 19. Crown Attorney Sarah Shaikh told the court that both have received their first wave of disclosure and a second set is coming.
Esseghaier has said at previous appearances that he does not want to be judged by the Criminal Code. Shaikh told the court that Esseghaier’s legal aid application has been approved, but he still has not found a lawyer. She was hoping to be able to schedule a judicial pre-trial today but told court it’s not possible since only one of them, Jaser, has a lawyer. Esseghaier and Jaser were arrested in April and face several terrorism-related charges in what police allege was a plot guided by al-Qaida in Iran to attack a Via train that runs between Toronto and New York City. Police stressed at the time of the arrests that there was no imminent threat to the public. International ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish police on Tuesday detained at least 20 people allegedly involved in violent protests, as the country’s prime minister continued to lash out at protesters — and a BBC journalist — he claimed were part of a conspiracy to harm Turkey. The state-run Anadolu Agency said police searched some 30 addresses in the capital Ankara and rounded up 20 people with alleged links to “terror” groups and suspected of “attacking police and the en-
vironment” during three weeks of protests that swept Turkey. It was the second police sweep against demonstrators in the city this week. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan holds unspecified foreign forces, bankers and media outlets responsible for the protests that began in Istanbul on May 31, following a heavy-handed police clampdown on peaceful activists. The protests quickly spread to other cities, with thousands expressing discontent with what critics have said is Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian way of governing. Erdogan, who took power a decade ago, denies he is authoritarian and, as evidence of his popularity, points to elections in 2011 that returned his party to power with 50 per cent of the vote and gave him a third term in office. The protests have largely subsided, but late on Monday, thousands in Istanbul protested a court decision that released a police officer from custody pending trial for the killing of a demonstrator in Ankara. In an address to members of his Islamicrooted party in Parliament, Erdogan reiterated that the protests were orchestrated by forces wanting to prevent Turkey’s rise. *** DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Qatar’s ruler formally handed power Tuesday to his 33-year-old son, capping a carefully
crafted transition that puts a new generation in charge of the Gulf nation’s vast energy wealth and rising political influence after the upheavals of the Arab Spring. The 61-year-old emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, used a televised address to note repeatedly the importance of shifting leadership to more youthful hands — an indirect acknowledgment of the demands for reforms opened by the uprisings that have swept the region. Qatar has been a player in the regional turmoil, using its riches to support rebels in Libya and now in Syria. Qatar also has broken ranks with other Gulf states to offer help to the Muslim Brotherhood, which rose to political dominance in Egypt. Its influence is further spread by the powerful Al-Jazeera TV network, which it founded. The Western-backed Gulf Arab dynasties have managed to remain in power, but they have displayed their insecurity by launching crackdowns that have included arrests over alleged anti-state plots and social media posts deemed insulting to the leadership. “The future lies ahead of you, the children of this homeland, as you usher into a new era where young leadership hoists the banner,” the outgoing emir said as he announced the anticipated transition to the British-educated crown prince, Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Work on CFL stadium upgrades continues National EDMONTON - Success for the Edmonton Eskimos is 2013 rests on five mountainsized men who barely know each other protecting the CFL team’s third opening-day quarterback in three years. But Eskimo head coach Kavis Reed promises a drastic improvement on the team’s 7-11 record from 2012. “We know there’s still going to be some growing pains,” said Reed. “However given the talent and given the core leadership that we have, we feel very confident this is going to be a very competitive football team that should win more games than we lose.” The Eskimos open the CFL season at home Saturday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Leading the way is quarterback Mike Reilly, acquired from the B.C. Lions in the off-season. The 28-year-old from Kennewick, Wash., gets his first crack as a starting QB in the pro game after years of apprenticeship as vagabond NFL training camp fodder before signing with the Lions in 2010. He started three games last year and saw action in six, completing 52 of 75 passes for 682 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions. *** WINNIPEG - Call it “Home Improvement, the CFL Edition.” CFL stadiums are being replaced or refurbished at a pace probably unmatched in league history, starting this season with the opening of a new home for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In 2014, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will move into a new facility while the expansion Ottawa Redblacks are projected to call a revamped Frank Clair Stadium home. And in 2017, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are scheduled to move into a new open-air venue to replace Mosaic Stadium. Existing facilities in Calgary and Edmonton get upgrades this season to make the game-day experience nicer for their fans. The big story this year is Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. A year behind schedule, a lot about the new facility drew rave reviews: the player areas, sightlines, comfortable seats and fancy suites and concessions. But there are kinks to be worked out. Cracks in the concrete are being repaired and then there’s the small matter of getting 33,400 people on and off the campus of the
University of Manitoba in time to actually watch football games. International FORTALEZA, Brazil - Spain’s players have denied that a robbery at a hotel in the first week of the Confederations Cup was linked to a party with women from outside the team’s travelling party. The Spanish federation has acknowledged that six of its players were robbed at the team hotel. But Spain defender Jordi Alba said Tuesday that reports in Brazilian media are “totally false.” Teammate Sergio Ramos said the reports are playing with the reputations of the Spanish team and “attempting to discredit with lies a generation of football players who have shown themselves to be the best.” “You can’t play with a country with a reputation like Spain that has a super clean image,” Ramos said. “You also can’t play with families, with the children we have, with girlfriends. To put all of this in doubt by inventing a serious story. In this regard, I hope the law does what is merited.” Brazilian reported that the theft was connected to a team party following a 2-1 victory over Uruguay in Recife nine days ago. The Spanish Football Federation, which had previously declined to give specifics about the incident, issued a statement late Monday “categorically” denying the reports, calling the allegations damaging to “the honour of the players and their families and friends.” *** NEW YORK, N.Y. - San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, 77-year-old golf Hall of Famer Gary Player and Olympic volleyball gold medallist Kerri Walsh Jennings — during and after her pregnancy — will be featured in ESPN The Magazine’s “Body Issue.” Other athletes photographed include Kaepernick’s 49ers teammate, tight end Vernon Davis; John Wall and Kenneth Faried from the NBA; Matt Harvey and Giancarlo Stanton from Major League Baseball; tennis stars Agnieszka Radwanska and John Isner; and soccer player Sydney Leroux. The fifth annual “Body Issue” hits newsstands July 12. Player becomes the oldest athlete to appear. Walsh Jennings was shot before and after her daughter was born in April. ESPN The Magazine editor in chief Chad Milliman says the athletes are “proud of the work they put into being strong and powerful and we’re proud that they trust us to capture that.”

Whatever Works
Young Nate Brenner of the Genesis Cleaners team just closed his eyes and swung away during the tee-ball activity in the Blast-O-Ball tournament held last weekend. Alida and Area 4-H Beef Club Extends a HUGE THANK YOU!
Congratulations to all members on a Great Year and Great Achievement Day. Thank you everyone who helped to make it all happen. The 4-H program helps to instill leadership, dedication and hard work, to leave members with the tools to become great community leaders. Without the dedication of leaders, volunteers, sponsors and support of steer buyers and bidders, the show would not be possible and these young members would not have the chance to complete their projects and showcase their hard work.
