Honky Tonk blues man comes to Estevan By Jordan Baker editor@estevanmercury.ca

Country music fans will have the opportunity to stomp their feet this weekend as Manitoba’s Quinton Blair will be playing at the Beef Bar on June 6 and 7 complete with his honky-tonk band. His latest release, Blues Man, came out last fall, and it was more than a year in the making. “What ended up happening on that one was, you’d write a song and then you’d tour it for a year. Then when you put that song together in the studio it would come together really quickly,” he said in an interview over the phone last week, noting his first album was written in the studio and they had to problem solve and work out the kinks on the spot. Blair lives and breathes music, and particularly country, like almost no other. He’s a student of the lives and methods of great musicians who have put their stamp on the genre. “You could say I was country when country wasn’t cool, before the whole country evolution here. I used to listen to AM radio and I got to listen to some great country music. We had an LP player and we listened to Kenny Rogers all the time, and I fell in love with story songs. I really learned that songs should say something, but sometimes you don’t always have to hear it. “A song that always reminded me of that when you think about country music is that Travis Tritt song called Anymore. The whole time you think that he’s saying ‘I don’t love you anymore,’ when the whole time he’s saying ‘I’m tired of pretending I don’t love you anymore.’ You thought the song was saying one thing, until you really listen to it and then you hear the other side of it.”

Quinton Blair will be in Estevan this weekend for two honkey tonk performances. He said his song that plays with the listener’s expectations is You. He has developed a strong sense of country music and holds artists to high expectations to create great material, as he differentiates between music created along the traditions of country’s roots and much of today’s rockinfused country music. “I have a project that runs the lines between real country and a singer-songwriter folk, kind of, feel. I find myself in a strange area, which I’ve learned to embrace and learned to love, but for a long time I hated it. I’m competing against the rock-country bands and that’s not my thing.” He said when booking shows he finds he is always competing against the newer, poppier country sounds. “What ends up happening is I joke with people that I play for either cowboys or hippies. I play the

folk world, or I play the traditional country world. It’s cool because there aren’t many who can go back and forth between those two different groups of people. It’s cool how at a show, you get both of them there,” said Blair. He performs a lot of material but noted that country music as a genre lends itself well to covering other musicians’ material. Depending on his crowd, either cowboys or hippies, he plays anything from Kris Kristofferson and Emmylou Harris or Garth Brooks and Steve Earle. That’s what he’ll be bringing to Estevan for two shows this weekend. “It’ll be honky-tonk night with some original music and a lot of great cover tunes. Country’s one of the genres that it’s acceptable to play cover tunes. In country, you pay your dues by playing three hours a night and you have to prove to the crowd

that you deserve to play originals.” He said he has paid his dues in front of audiences over the years. “I sometimes joke that I have Fred Eaglesmith Fever. Fred is always on the road and touring, and I just have to play. It’s not that I dislike going into the studio but I definitely prefer to play on stage.” It’s that method of playing live at every opportunity that led to his approached to Blues Man. “On the second album I used the John Hiatt model, which is write a song, tour and then go into the studio to record it, and then your studio time is just a blast because it’s everything you do on stage. There wasn’t any learning of parts. It’s pretty much just us playing live off the floor, though we did do individual sessions of the parts.” He said he has new material written now that he plans to play live off and on over the next 12 months before getting back into the studio to record a third album. “The studio becomes so much fun at that point.” Blair said he was impressed that after a year of being played before live audiences the songs didn’t change much once they were recorded. “We put down the bed tracks shortly after the songs were written, and then we didn’t go back to the studio for another eight to 10 months after that. It was funny how some tempos changed slightly and some feels changed slightly, but then you come back to the bed tracks and you go, ‘You know what? We are pretty bang on close to what the original was, and I actually prefer the original.’ We took all those evolutions out of the songs (in the end).” Blair’s performances start at 9 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

Not all food is created equal There isn’t anything wrong with picky eating, though at times I find myself to be a snob of contradiction. Many of us can be incredibly judgmental when people are different. A quick way to judge others is through their palettes and the food they will or won’t eat. I regularly turn my nose up at others when they have strange eating habits, wondering why they won’t just grow up and eat real food like an adult. But I have my own secret list of cuisine that I will just refuse to swallow. We all have something we won’t eat, and some of us have many foods or entire food groups we refuse to consume. My list is small compared to many, and that gives me some sense of satisfaction in the same way being the best golfer in a foursome of duffers with over-30 handicaps must bring the winner in that group. You see, I can’t bring myself to stomach lasagna. Something as normal and benign as lasagna is an embarrassing thing to list on my no-fly zone of foods. My attendance is required at a number of dinners in the community as part of covering events where food is involved and luckily, nobody ever serves

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers that bizarre flat-pasta dish in this city. I try to reason that my refusal to handle lasagna is better than those poor souls who refuse to eat simple and natural things like peas or kale, but really I’m just prone to food elitism. When we’re judging people for the food they won’t eat, we sometimes fall into the trap of thinking it’s a choice for everyone else but us. At least I do. My lasagna-phobia is beyond my control, but when I see someone push away their curry I think they’re just being ridiculous. Who doesn’t like curry, anyway? Of course, these quirks of our taste buds are inexplicable and have far less to do with choice than they do familiarity and even genetics. It may not even be about taste when things like texture and “mouth feel” come into play when tasting foods. Food allergies are a whole thing on their own.

We take issue with foods for their weird smells, how they look or even just for the abstract image that comes to mind when we think of them. Whatever the case, lasagna is a nogo for me. Sure, I like pasta and cheese and tomato sauce, and even like them all together in a different setting with a change in ambience on the right-shaped plate. It wasn’t that lasagna was an unfamiliar dish never served on my family’s table growing up. My mother may not have enforced her rules on food discipline. It was never a case of eating what had been made for dinner or going hungry in my household. Those who refused the cooking just had to fend for themselves. On lasagna night, I made sandwiches. I made do. And perhaps the least picky of us had parents who wouldn’t let us get away with pushing away a plateful of edible and delicious food. Having those foods you just can’t eat can be embarrassing when that’s the only thing served for dinner, but when we all have our own quirky taste buds, it’s common enough to be excusable.

Grain growing more globally diverse As another spring drags on for Prairie farmers, hot days always seeming followed by days of cloud and rain there is a bit of good news for farmers. “The USDA reduced the estimates for new crop US wheat production but left the world output about unchanged. They forecast a slightly lower world wheat carryout for 2014/15, while they also increased the feed grains carryout to 210.5m tonnes from 203.8 m tonnes this year. The numbers were seen as neutral to bearish,” reports agadvance. com. Following the record crops grown on the Canadian Prairies there had to be at least some concerns agricultural commodities could have taken a serious decline in terms of price based on world grain stocks. Of course it may be a case where grain stocks, especially world production to use ratios, and expected crop carry-out from one year to the next are no longer the important market signals they once were. There are trends at play which are changing the perspective of grain production in terms of price influences. Today more countries are capable of producing grain beyond domestic use levels, which means excess, espe-

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist cially in good production years, hits the export market. The world now has more sources for food grains, which means a weather pressure in major exporting countries such as Australia, the United States, or Canada, is seen as having a less dramatic impact on supplies. The greater diversity within countries exporting also means stocks can grow tighter because the lag until the next harvest somewhere is now shorter. Some country which will be able to supply a market somewhere in the world will grow a crop, or at least that is increasingly the view. The same vision means carry-out stocks can become tighter, because, again, some country will be harvesting soon enough to alleviate the tightness in stocks. In terms of world food security the diversity in production is a good thing. And there is potential for that diversity to grow, although it will take a

different political approach on a very broad scale to happen. There is little doubt many countries in Eastern Europe could produce more grain given the infrastructure and resources to do so. One can only imagine what Canadian farm practices would do if they were possible to transfer to Ukraine, Poland and other countries in that region. Many African countries are even further behind Canada in terms of not just in-field technology, but more importantly in a system to move and protect grains from being lost after harvest. If technology could successfully be transferred to many African countries world grain production could be greatly improved. We often wonder how Canadian farmers can continue to grow production to feed a growing world population, but the answer to those needs long term lie in stabilizing our world and spreading the tech we enjoy among others. In the short term indicators are relatively good for prices. But the indicators behind the good news and the needs of our future are more important to consider.

International BERLIN - Germany’s chief federal prosecutor says he has opened an investigation into the alleged monitoring of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone by the U.S. National Security Agency. Prosecutor Harald Range has been mulling for months whether to open a formal probe of the Merkel allegations, which cooled relations between Berlin and Washington. Range’s office said Wednesday he has decided to proceed with an investigation into persons unknown regarding Merkel’s phone, a move that is potentially delicate diplomatically. SYDNEY - A team of Australian researchers looking into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 released data on Wednesday about an unusual underwater sound recorded around the time the plane vanished, though the lead scientist acknowledged the chances it is linked to the jet are slim. The low-frequency sound was picked up by underwater listening devices in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia on March 8, the same day the Boeing 777 disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing with 239 people on board. Researchers at Curtin University in Western Australia have been analyzing the signal to see if it may be the sound of the plane crashing into the ocean. But Alec Duncan, who’s heading up the research, said the sound appears to have originated well outside the jet’s projected flight path that officials determined based on satellite and radar data, and is therefore unlikely to have come from the plane. “It’s one of these situations where you find yourself willing it all to fit together but it really doesn’t,” said Duncan, senior research fellow with Curtin’s Center for Marine Science and Technology. “I’d love to be able to sit here and say, ‘Yeah, we’ve found this thing and it’s from the plane’ — but the reality is, there’s a lot of things

that make noise in the ocean.” The noise could have come from a natural event, such as a small earthquake, Duncan said. He put the chances of it being linked to Flight 370 at less than 20 per cent. LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II is unveiling the government’s legislative agenda for its final year in office on a day that showcases Britain in grandest style — offering a sumptuous display of pomp and power. The main ceremonial event of Parliament’s calendar is a moment of national pride, replete with ermine and silk and evoking centuries of grandeur. Tourists lined the streets near the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday to watch the parade of carriages in hopes of glimpsing the monarch’s waving, gloved hand. The speech marks the final opportunity for David Cameron’s Conservative-led government to outline plans for laws ahead of the national election set for 2015. The monarch travelled in the resplendent new Diamond Jubilee State Coach, whose structure incorporates fragments of historic buildings and objects from historic sites. BEIRUT - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is on an unannounced trip to Lebanon to bring Obama administration support to the country’s government as it confronts severe difficulties, with an influx of refugees from next door in Syria and a political stalemate at home. Kerry arrived in Beirut on Wednesday to meet with Lebanese officials and others as they deal with both the fallout from the conflict in Syria and a seemingly intractable dispute over who will become the next Lebanese president. Kerry is expected to announce another $290 million in aid for United Nations agencies working on the Syrian refugee issue throughout the region. Lebanon, home to 4.5 million people, is struggling to cope with the presence of more than a million Syrian and Palestinian refugees in desperate need of housing, education and medical care. A senior U.S. official travelling with Kerry said that in addition to discussing the refugee issue with Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Tammam Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, the secretary would also press them to deal with the political crisis that has left the country without a president since last month. Lebanon requires a “fully functioning” presidency in order to cope with tremendous challenges it faces, the official said, adding that although Washington has no favoured candidate, the U.S. would like to see a new president in office as soon as possible. Kerry is the first secretary of state to visit Lebanon in five years; Hillary Rodham Clinton travelled there in April 2009. Kerry travelled to Lebanon at least four times as a senator since 2006, the last time in November 2010.

City computer firm, which serves a number of government departments. The Public Security Department confirmed the seizures in a statement and said it would co-operate with the unit’s investigation, which the department says began after a complaint was filed in 2013. The unit did not wish to comment. Opposition politicians were suprised by the move. “This is, at first glance, actually a bit surprising, but it is also reassuring to the extent that I think it confirms that no one is above the law,” said Stephane Bergeron, a Parti Quebecois legislature member who was the minister of Public Security in the previous PQ minority government.

National OTTAWA - A new report on Canada’s freedom-ofinformation laws slams the federal government for its poor performance in making computer data public, even as the Harper administration touts its ‘Open Data’ policy. Newspapers Canada directly tested federal, provincial and municipal transparency laws with almost 400 formal requests for information last October and November, the 10th annual audit carried out by the organization. This year’s version added 172 requests for electronic data sets, requiring the information to be provided in a format that can be digested and manipulated by computer. Most government bodies fell short, many insisting on providing the data requested on paper, or providing it in the electronic equivalent of a photo — impossible to process in a spreadsheet or database program. Among the worst performers were some departments of the federal government, which has been promoting its ‘Open Data’ agenda as evidence of transparency, including the proactive posting of some 200,000 data sets online. The audit found that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s own department, the Privy Council Office, refused to release any information in electronic format, insisting on paper printouts. VANCOUVER - A new study says science won’t be able to save us when it comes to climate change. A team of researchers has weighed the potential for geo-engineering approaches like ocean fertilization, carbon capture and forest management. Team member Jonn Axsen of Simon Fraser University says they looked at the cost, feasibility, risk, ethics and public acceptance of each of those approaches. What they found is that none — or even all together — compare to reducing human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Axsen says the message for members of the public and policy makers is that there is no scientific “silver bullet” that will undo the damage of climate change. The study is published in the latest issue of the journal Frontier in Ecology and the Environment. QUEBEC - It appears that nobody is safe from the province’s anti-corruption squad, not even their own bosses. Investigators descended on the Public Security Department Wednesday, the same department which oversees police forces including the anti-corruption unit known as UPAC. The unit was interested in a warehouse in Quebec City that housed the department’s old office furniture and computer equipment. A second seizure was also conducted at a Quebec

NFL dropping Roman numerals for Super Bowl 50 National REGINA - The most prolific receiver in CFL history is calling it a career. Slotback Geroy Simon announced his retirement Wednesday after 15 seasons. The 38-year-old native of Johnstown, Pa., played 12 years with the B.C. Lions but finished his career with Saskatchewan, helping the Roughriders win the Grey Cup last year. Simon spent his first two CFL seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and retires as the league’s all-time leader in catches (1,029) and yards (16,352). Simon was named the league’s outstanding player in 2006 after registering 105 catches for 1,856 yards and 15 TDs with B.C., finishing that season with the first of three career Grey Cup title wins. The six-foot, 198-pound former Maryland star was a model of consistency with B.C., registering nine straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons before ending that streak in 2012 when he recorded 54 catches for 700 yards. B.C. traded Simon, a six-time CFL all-star, to Saskatchewan on Jan. 24, 2014 for receiver Justin Harper and a 2014 third-round pick. Simon missed Saskatchewan’s first three regularseason games due to injury and finished the year with 40 catches for 565 yards and three TDs. PARIS - Canada’s Fed Cup team has drawn a tough opponent for its first appearance in the elite World Group.

The top-ranked Czech Republic will visit Canada for a first-round tie Feb. 7-8, 2015. “This will be our first World Group tie and the team knows that no matter who the opponent, it will be a very talented team that is one of the best in the world,” Canada’s Fed Cup captain Sylvain Bruneau said in a release. “This is very true of the Czech Republic as they have solid players and lots of experience winning in this competition.” The official draw was conducted Wednesday at Roland Garros. In other first-round ties, Italy will host France, Germany will entertain Australia and Russia will visit Poland. The 2014 tournament will be decided in November when the Czechs host Germany in the final. Canada is currently ranked No. 8 in the world. Canada defeated Serbia 3-1 in the World Group II first round in February and beat Slovakia 3-1 in the World Group playoff in April in Quebec City. The host venue and playing surface will be announced at a later date. International NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Super Bowl will scrap the Roman numerals for a year. The 50th edition of the game will be played in February 2016 in Santa Clara, California. The NFL said Wednesday it will be called “Super Bowl 50” instead of “Super Bowl L.”

In 2017, the league will revert to Roman numerals, referring to the 51st edition as “Super Bowl LI.” The NFL first started using Roman numerals for the fifth Super Bowl in 1971. PARIS - Andrea Petkovic and Simona Halep completed the French Open semifinal pairings with straight-set wins Wednesday, and one of them will be in a Grand Slam final for the first time. Petkovic, a 28th-seeded German, beat 2012 French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy 6-2, 6-2. The fourth-seeded Halep defeated 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, also 6-2, 6-2. “I have to say, today I was in a real zone. I didn’t think at all,” Petkovic said. “I was just focused on what I had to do.” Neither Petkovic nor Halep has ever played in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. But they will meet on Thursday with a spot in the final against either Maria Sharapova or Eugenie Bouchard on the line. Later Wednesday, eight-time champion Rafael Nadal was to face 2013 runner-up David Ferrer, while Andy Murray was playing Gael Monfils. Monfils is trying to become the first Frenchman to win the title at Roland Garros since Yannick Noah in 1983. Petkovic was first to complete her match on a wet day at Roland Garros. And although she had some trouble holding serve at the start of each set, her groundstrokes consistently landed near the lines, many of them for winners.

One of the newest additions to the wildlife compound at Estevan Brick was a fawn that was brought in by a Macoun resident. Apparently its mother had been killed when struck by a motor vehicle. The responsibility for feeding ‘Bambi’ went to gamekeepers Norma Westgard. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. Mini Relay

Weldon School hosted this year’s mini Relay For Life that saw the survivor’s lap followed by a few laps with the survivor’s being joined by family members and caregivers. Then all community members were invited to join in a marathon stroll while Bienfait students provided entertainment on stage in the school’s gymnasium.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2014

• It was beloved “Peanuts” cartoonist Charles Schulz who made the following sage observation: “Life is like a 10-speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use.” • If you’re like the average American, you will consume 22 pounds of lettuce this year. • You might be surprised to learn that some fish can hibernate. During the long, dark winters, the Antarctic cod will burrow under the seabed and stay there for days at a time, cutting its metabolism by two-thirds. • The name of the state of Wyoming comes from the Algonquian word chwewamink, which translates as “at the big river flat.” • If you pay attention to politics at all, you’ve almost certainly heard the term “gerrymander” used to describe the practice of carving up electoral districts in such a way that one party has an advantage. You probably don’t know, though, how that term entered the lexicon. In 1812, a new district

in Essex County, Massachusetts, was created, and a journalist thought the twisting boundaries caused the district to resemble a salamander. A cartoon highlighting the resemblance was created, and because the party that did the redistricting was led by Gov. Elbridge Gerry, the practice was dubbed “gerrymandering.” • Even the world’s best high jumper is unable to stay in the air for more than a single second. • Before he became a comedian and actor, Bob Newhart worked as an accountant at the Illinois State Unemployment Office. • Those who keep track of such things say that Elvis Presley had 18 TVs at Graceland. One of them was installed in the ceiling over his bed. *** Thought for the Day: “It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.” -- Carl Sagan (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Students and teachers at Estevan Comprehensive School dusted off their improv acting chops at the annual Improv Games last week.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2014

in Las Vegas took a cheap shot at Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Ben Affleck because "he was counting cards" (which is not illegal), while playing blackjack and winning big. The Hard Rock Hotel should be boycotted because when you're losing they love you, and when you're winning they ban you from ever playing blackjack there again. Affleck has bigger fish to fry. He's completed the new "Batman," which will be released May 6, 2016, against "Captain America 3," and he's just announced his first directing project since winning the Oscar for "Argo." Ben will direct and star in "Live by Night," which he adapted from Dennis Lehane's novel about the son of a police chief who descends onto a life of crime. *** Emma Stone is bouncing from "Spider Man" to Woody Allen. She'll star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in an untitled film that Woody is producing, writ-

Page 15

ing and directing. Five actresses and one actor have won their Oscars for Woody Allen films. Can you guess them? Diane Keaton ("Annie Hall"); Dianne Weist ("Hannah and Her Sisters") and ("Bullets Over Broadway"); Miro Sorvino ("Mighty Aphrodite"); Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Christina Barcelona"); Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine"); and Michael Caine ("Hannah and Her Sisters"). Oh yes, Woody won five for himself out of 24 nominations. *** "Brooklyn NineNine" star Terry Crews is taking over the hosting chores of the syndicated "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" from Cedric the Entertainer. The former NFL star and Old Spice pitchman will have to be quick on his feet to top Cedric. Insiders say he'll "crews" through the job and become a millionaire quicker than the contestants. H O L LY W O O D - "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston has been unstoppable since his mega-hit series ended. He's currently onscreen in "Godzilla" and on Broadway playing Lyndon Baines Johnson in "All the Way," for which he's already won a Theatre World Award and may receive a Tony Award on its June 8 telecast. His next film is "Get a Job" with Miles Teller, Anna Kendrick, Marcia Gay Harden and Bruce Davison later this year, and as Po's father in "Kung Fu Panda" next year. Cranston also is set to play blacklisted screen writer Dalton Trumbo, who was dragged in front of The House Committee for Un-American Activities, in "Trumbo" opposite Helen Mirren, who has been cast as famed Hollywood columnist Hedda Hopper. Trumbo was eventually cleared of all charges. In 1993, he finally received an Oscar for writing "Roman Holiday," which was presented to Ian McLellan Hunter (who fronted for him) in 1953, and an Oscar for "The Brave One" in 1956, which he wrote under the pen name of Robert Rich. *** The Hard Rock Hotel
