Whose Line Is It?

Five teams of students at the Estevan Comprehensive School competed over two days last week in the school’s annual Improv Games. The groups were timed after receiving a theme, like world’s worst Walmart greeter, and were then judged on their ability to come up with quality improv bits based on that material.

Cheers&Jeers

Cheers to the two guys who gave me a push into the 7-Eleven parking lot when I broke down at the intersection. It was very much appreciated as it was pouring rain and very embarrassing. Thank you!

Cheers to the speedy drive through at the Tim Hortons on the north side of the city. Cheers to the revival of the Souris Valley Theatre. I can’t wait to head back down there for a show. Cheers to the city crew painting the play structure at Royal Heights playpark. Cheers to all the volunteers who helped out at the Day of Caring on Wednesday. Cheers to the students at Sacred Heart School for raising more than $12,000 for Relay for Life.

Jeers to all of the stores that ask for dollar donations for charities. You can make three stops in one day to different stores, and they are all collecting for something. I am tired of feeling guilty for saying no every time because I already support charities of my choice. Jeers to the huge pothole on the corner of the truck route turning right onto Fourth Street. It’s a disgrace, even gravel would help. Jeers to the roads in Estevan. This is getting ridiculous and embarrassing. Jeers to the designers of the flyers that come with whole pages, half pages, page and one quarter and pages not folded in half as one flyer. What is their intent?

It takes community to foster tourism Tourism is a bizarre industry, because no matter how good it is for local economies, nobody likes tourists. Tourism provides an interesting paradox in that sense, and even tourists think they same thing while touring. They don’t like other tourists. Maybe you have heard, but there is a traffic jam on Mount Everest and for good reason. For many, scaling the globe, reaching the highest peak on the planet, and knowing you are on the top of the world is I’m sure a thrilling experience. It probably isn’t the same thing if someone behind you is tapping his wristwatch and reminding you it has been three minutes already, and it’s his turn to stand at the summit. It’s what tourists do. They ruin things for themselves and everybody else. I’ve done that. I’ve seen the signs in tourist hotspots: “Tourist equals Terrorist.” That’s what the local people think about those mischievous travellers. I’ve stood in the Sistine Chapel, thinking, “There are just too many damn people in this place,” but they’re there for the same reason I am. Everyone wants that one moment of peace to gaze up Michelangelo’s ceiling-based masterpiece. Instead, it’s so loud with coarse whisperers it’s hard to think as people elbow you in the ribs. I just wanted out of there, be-

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers cause how dare anyone try to see something at the same time I am there. Tourists step on each other’s toes constantly, and that’s why if you talk to people about travelling, they tell you to go to the little known spots, and just hope you don’t stumble onto a Sicilian mafia family’s compound. When people travel, they want to experience local culture and customs, but generally, because of the swath of fellow travellers, there is no extra space for a unique experience. Estevan doesn’t seem to have a real tourist “problem” yet, but the city is receiving more opportunities to welcome outsiders. Venues like Spectra Place aren’t only providing sporting and concert opportunities, but it could become a very prominent convention centre in the province, as could the Saskatchewan Energy Training Institute that already serves as a great location for conferences. There is plenty of room for growth in

Estevan’s tourism community, but it takes an entire city to foster local tourism. I’ve heard Estevan called a “rough” town. I think that’s a polite way to say it, and, as an industrious Energy City, it is. In many other ways, the city is full of welcoming personalities who would love to swap stories and share their local knowledge. These are the kinds of people who can brighten anyone else’s day. Making a connection always puts a smile on my face and as a community, it’s important to help make everyone feel at home. It’s not just about those in the tourist industry fixing smiles to their faces. Estevan has less of a tourist problem and more of a transient one, though I don’t want to call that a problem. We could call them “professional tourists,” those who must travel from place to place for work. Part of the problem locals have with tourists, both professional and recreational, is that they feel as though they don’t respect our cities the way we do. I think that all starts with the locals. If we are treating our guests and city well, they will treat the city well, and if they treat the city well, everyone will feel more inclined to invite greater tourism. As Estevan becomes a growing haven for tourists, don’t treat them like terrorists.

A talk about farming history The best part of most interviews in this business is not the actual topic of the story you are working on. Those are often mundane to be completely honest. But a good interview, and that is reliant on the reporter asking good questions, and the person being interviewed being willing to respond in some depth, rarely stays on course with talk about only the topic of the story. A good interview is more of a winding path than a straight road from start to conclusion. The best times on the road are on those hairpin curves where I, as the journalist, get to sit down my pen and partake in a conversation over a shared java. So recently I met up with Ivan Olynyk to discuss his recent penning of a manual on growing corn on the Canadian Prairies for winter grazing cattle. As a one-time farm boy, whose interest was always livestock, with a level of disdain for the monotony of driving a tractor around a field, a tedious process with a 12-foot implement behind a small Case tractor, the labourreducing aspect of what he was writing about was rather obvious. If cows can wander through the cornfield and feed themselves, while spreading their own manure during the coldest months of the year, it sounds pretty good to me. But what I was particularly interested in when talking to Ivan was his comments on more and more farmers successfully growing corn to harvest and sell the grain. When I was growing up corn was some-

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist thing they grew in the United States and Ontario, with maybe some acres encroaching into Manitoba, but the idea of growing corn for grain in Saskatchewan would have been preposterous. Corn in those days was simply a crop requiring too many days to maturity, and too many heat units during the growing days, to be viable here. That things have changed so dramatically over the last 30 years is testament to just how dramatic of steps have been taken in varietal development. Of course, as Ivan and I discussed, it stands to reason that plant breeders, most of which work for large companies when it comes to corn, would look to create varieties to expand the range for corn. In the true heart of corn country in the United States, they are likely near the limit in terms of corn acres, based on rotations and other factors. So in order to sell more seed and to expand the market for new varieties, the boundaries of the normal range for corn has to expand. That means developing varieties that mature more quickly, requiring less heat units.

Such varieties won’t hit the production levels achieved in an Iowa cornfield, but to a Prairie farmer looking for a high-value crop to grow in rotation with canola, corn can still be enticing. The conversation soon grew to include some talk about soybeans. They are another crop option farmers are looking at in Saskatchewan in areas that only a decade ago would never have been considered. Again, the value of soybeans makes them attractive, if they can be successfully grown thanks to new varieties. If one wants to take a slightly longer view of things, we hear a lot about global weather patterns changing. Many see our weather evolving to something more akin to the weather of Montana and the Dakotas. While that change will bring with it challenges, it will also lend itself to growing more corn and soybeans. The Prairies may have been broke to grow wheat, and Canada may have earned a reputation as ‘Bread Basket to the World’ because of that wheat, but things are changing. Cereal grains are a hard way to make money, and producers have embraced canola, pulse crops and explored everything from borage to quinoa looking for alternatives to wheat, oats and barley. Ivan suggested the search might be over thanks to the expanding ranges for corn and soybeans. I would have to agree that along with canola, the three are likely to hold the interest of farmers as the crops with the best potential to generate significant gross returns per acre.

to the number of high-profile allegations of sexual harassment suggests gender-based harassment was common among the female officers who participated in a study about their experiences. *** QUEBEC -About 1,000 patients will need to be screened for HIV and hepatitis after sterilization problems at Quebec City-area medical establishments. at l’Hotel-Dieu hospital in Levis, Que., or at the AlphonseDesjardins medical centre. Authorities announced Monday that certain devices used in probes of the digestive system might not have been properly sterilized. They said the actual risk of transmission during the procedure was quite low. But they said they had confirmed the identity of all patients who underwent the procedure since 2005. Seventy per cent of them are from the Quebec City region, and 30 per cent are from outside that area. The people in question will receive letters, starting next week, with instructions on steps to take. A 1-800 telephone hotline will also be set up. “Even if the risk is nearly non-existent we have decided to offer screening for Hepatitis B and C, and for HIV,” said Dr. Andre Vincent, head of the department of labs at Alphonse-Desjardins. International CAIRO - An Egyptian court on Tuesday convicted 43 non-profit workers, including at least 16Americans, of illegally using foreign funds to foment unrest in the country and sentenced them

to up to five years in prison. Most of the Americans were sentenced in absentia because they had long left the country, including Sam LaHood, son of the U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. He received a five-year jail term. The only American defendant still in Egypt was Robert Becker, who was sentenced to two years. Becker has maintained that his refusal to flee Egypt with fellow Americans who were in the country at the time of the crackdown on non-profit groups was to show solidarity with his Egyptian colleagues. After his verdict, Becker, who was not in the courtroom for the verdict, wrote on his Twitter account that he was reviewing his “legal/appeals options” with his lawyers. The verdict, read out by judge Makram Awad, also ordered the closure of the offices and seizure of the assets in Egypt belonging to the U.S. non-profit groups as well as one German organization for which the defendants worked. These are the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, Freedom House, a centre for training journalists, and Germany’s KonradAdenauer Foundation.

Canadian diver retires after 22 years National MONTREAL - Threetime world diving champion Alexandre Despatie is retiring after an illustrious career that saw him burst on to the international scene as a 13-year-old phenomenon. ‘’I never thought this day would ever come,’’ he told a news conference in Montreal on Tuesday. ‘’It’s not a day I thought about but after 22 years in diving, it’s time to do something else in life.’’ Despatie, who began diving at home as a five-yearold, thanked all the people and organizations that helped him during his career, including trainers, the Canadian

Olympic Committee and Diving Canada. “Thank you for believing in me,” he said. “To all my friends, thank you for your understanding. To my family. mom, dad, thank you for your unconditional support.’’ He said he’s going to take a break and ‘’and then pursue my dream to have a career in television.’’ Despatie is the only diver to have won world championships in all three of the one-metre, three-metre and 10-metre events. He captured the imagination of the diving world at the 1998 Commonwealth Games when he won gold

NOTICE Pursuant to The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Act, 2005 Notice is hereby given that in accordance with the provisions of The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Act, 2005 and regulations, an application and plans required by Section 61 of the said Act, were filed with the Water Security Agency at Moose Saw, Saskatchewan, by the undersigned, for approval to construct and operate works described as: R. French Transport Ltd has applied for the construction of 3 wells within the NE 13-08-06 W2M. The majority of the water drawn from these wells will be provided to third party industrial clients for use in enhanced oil recovery. The wells will operate at a average continuous flow rate of 3.6 L/s to meet demands. The demand will not be continuous, therefore the operating flow will be cyclic to meet the peak use of about 1,100 m3 over a 2 day period followed by several days of infrequent use. The projected time period for this project is 3 years, however R. French Transport Ltd may seek extension to a longer term depending on demand. The proponent has requested a total extraction of 110,000 cubic metres per year. Any person who objects to the granting of this approval may file a written statement, within 30 days from first publication of this notice, outlining the reasons for objection, to the Water Security Agency, 111 Fairford Street East, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan • S6H 7X9. Dated at, Saskatchewan this 3 day of June, 2013. rd

in the 10-metre event at the age of 13. Despatie, who turns 28 this Saturday, was also a silver medallist on the threemetre springboard at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. *** WINNIPEG - After ranking third in CFL return yards last season, Demond Washington is in the hunt for a starting spot on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defence. Injuries and a lot of shuffling hampered Winnipeg’s

R E O F AS LE

defence last season and head coach Tim Burke has made it clear his starters have to get better, or start looking for new jobs. Burke also wants more intensity and says that’s what Washington brings. Washington has slotted in at weak-side linebacker early in training camp, a position that requires a lot of coverage in the secondary. Burke says Washington could still handle returns if that’s what special teams co-

ordinator Craig Dickenson wants. International ROME - Usain Bolt is looking forward to performing at his best again after being slowed by a hamstring injury a month ago. The 100-meter world record-holder makes his European debut this season at Thursday’s Golden Gala. The six-time Olympic champion has ran the 100 only once this year, narrowly

edging one of his training partners, Kemar BaileyCole, in a photo finish in the Cayman Islands on May 8 in a relatively slow 10.09 seconds. “I did have a bad performance but we went back to the drawing board and worked out everything. We figured out what went wrong. I’m confident now,” Bolt said on Tuesday. “It’s a long season. Last season started badly also, so I’m just going to keep working.
