New block heater cord sends two to P.E.I. It was the solution to a problem that has plagued Saskatchewan’s winter drivers for years. Plugging in your block heater overnight is a great way, and sometimes necessary way, to make sure your vehicle’s engine doesn’t freeze, and ensure the car can be driven away the next morning. In the early morning fog of sleepiness or the morning rush, many a driver will forget to unplug the cords before driving away. Nevermore will it be a problem for forgetful morning commuters to drive away with their cords still attached, at least not with the designs by Jacob Windecker and Brandon Kennedy. The two senior students from the Weyburn Comprehensive School designed a self-detaching block heater cord, a design that won them first place in the 21st annual Southeast Regional Science Fair, last week in Midale. Their project, entitled SDBH 1.0, also won the senior engineering category. The duo will take their project to Charlottetown, P.E.I. for the Canada-wide Science Fair from May 12 to 19. Accompanying them will be runner-up Kalum Brennan of Midale, for his project All Jacked Up, and his design for a new jack. Kalum’s project was the second-place finisher in senior engineering. The duo decided to do the project after hearing a list of possible ideas were fired off by their teacher. “(We wanted to) try to find a way to solve the problem of when people plug their car in overnight to keep their engine running on a cold day, but then they forget about it and drive away while it’s still plugged in,” said Brandon. “It rips out pretty aggressively and damages some things.

Hearing is precious - get yours tested! Winners of the Southeast Regional Science Fair in Midale last week were Jacob Windecker, left and Brandon Kennedy, middle, who designed a selfdetaching block heater cord. Second place went to Kalum Brennan, right, for his project All Jacked Up. So we thought, ‘why don’t we make it magnetic?’ so it’s still strong enough to hold it together and keep the energy flowing, but it’s weak enough that it will disconnect without breaking anything.” Jacob explained that it was a simple enough design process, but they did have to make sure they were precise. “The only main issue was trying to design it so that all three pins make contact at the same time and make a good connection,” he said. “That’s really one of the only major design features that we had to work on, and we revised it many times.” The boys are looking at ways they can further improve their project before the science fair out east. They have some ideas of their own, but the judges they said, gave them some useful pointers. “Even during the presentation today, we thought of two or three more things that we could do to change it,” said Brandon. “The judges were really good, they gave us lots of tips.”

“We got lots of input on ways we could improve it and ways we could make it better overall,” added Jacob. With this year’s Canadawide fair being held in Prince Edward Island for the first time, it not only grants the teens an opportunity to exhibit their work along with the other top projects the country has to offer, but also a chance to visit the Maritimes. “I’ve wanted to go to the East Coast for a long time,” said Brandon. Judges at the science fair came from a variety of backgrounds, with teachers as well as several others from the area’s business community. Other winners from the science fair were Sheldon Daniel of Avonlea for What’s in the Name?, in junior life science; Breanna Aikens and Celina Earl of Avonlea for Do Shoes Matter?, in junior physical science; Leanne Dombowsky of Avonlea for Chicken Scratch, in junior engineering; and Kaylee Fuchs of Carnduff for Where is My Cellphone? in junior

computer science. First-place intermediate awards went to Midale’s Dakota Emde and Jessee Brennan for WonderFULL Bra in life science; Selena Wiebe and Maggie Peters of Midale for Make Cents? in physical science; William Read of Midale for O.S.C.D. Project in computer science; Dillan Plews and Barrett Paton of Carnduff for Two Way Toolbox in engineering; and John Boutin of Redvers for All the Poo on Farm Bio-Gas. Senior awards went to Ty Paton of Carnduff for Glucose Testing Horses, in life science; Michael Wiebe and Braiden Effa of Midale for Bouncing Back!, in physical science; Matthew Read of Midale for Gears of War 3, in the computer science category. Paton’s Glucose Testing Horses and Dombowsky’s Chicken Scratch won third and fourth overall projects at the fair and will be part of the winners’showcase, where they will display their projects at the Saskatchewan Science Centre in Regina.

Position the straw at the bottom of the strawberry, then push up toward the stem. It works quickly and well. • If you mount a magnet strip in your bathroom or on your vanity, you can use it to hold bobby pins or metal barrettes. Or mount a ribbon to hold all kinds of hair clips. • If your entertainment electronics have a clock that is too bright, cover it with plain tape. You’ll still be able to read the time, but the tape will lessen the glare.

A lack of direction for eco-minded youth Young people don’t care about the environment anymore. Give it up to the millennials to claim the title of the most apathetic generation in a century, and maybe more. We won’t know for sure because people didn’t spend time on studies concerning young people’s ecomindedness before the 1950s. A millennial, for those who are aware of Gen-Xers but roll your eyes when you hear Generation Y, is someone in high school or university right now. A new report says that only five per cent of these millennials take individual measures to help the environment, a decrease from the baby boomers by about 10 per cent. I am not an environmentalist, though I do think the environment is a greater issue right now than the economy, global security or the ongoing kerfuffle between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It’s even more important than Kony 2012, which I felt compelled to name drop in at least one column while the term was still relevant. Having a healthy planet should collectively be our biggest concern because it is necessary for a prosperous future. It’s unfortunate that some people went a little overboard while raising awareness to the issue of a climate that is changing as a result of human pollution. Five years

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers ago when this was really turning into a hot issue, some environmentalists gave projections of what the world would look like now and then five years from now. Those were probably based on absolute worst-case scenarios in order to get people to jump into action immediately. Well, that didn’t happen. The publicity campaign went so far that people called it fear mongering and started questioning the science, which was actually just fine. The greenhouse effect isn’t really that difficult to wrap your head around. I think that was Grade 5 geography class with Mr. Coursey. This all seems to have had a big impact on the millennial generation. What the doomsayers are saying is pretty scary stuff. It’s too daunting for an individual to make personal changes and expect pollution to do a 180. I have never been able to figure how reducing pollution has become such an issue. People need leadership. That leadership

needs to come from the people who make the rules: our government. It would be helpful to have a clear, national environmental strategy, something that would have everyone co-ordinated in their efforts. For some reason, however, this has become a heated political issue, and a strategy so helpful is unlikely to come out of Ottawa, regardless of who controls the House. Perhaps that’s because it doesn’t matter if Canada does something to fight pollution. Canada is such a small player in the global game that if nobody else follows suit, our efforts would be pointless. That’s something that is out of our control. We can at least do something in Canada. I know we’re a pretty insignificant country, but maybe others will see what we’re doing. If we’re doing a good job, maybe they’ll see the merits in joining in. The millennials who hear all the rhetoric about the dying Earth have very little hope. If you listen to it, you might think that the only way to turn this around is if we all heat our homes with firewood, learn to ride horses and abandon the use of plastic. It’s important to show the generation that leadership is going to be a key component in dealing with this issue, that it is an important one and that they can make decisions that will have an impact.

Bull sales get technological boost Spring is the time of bull sales. While the snow melts, cattle producers begin the process of purchasing new genetics. And when it comes to breeds, they have a range of options, although fewer than they did 35 years ago when European breeds were arriving and making a splash on an almost annual basis. Breeds such as Meuse-Rhine-Yssel, Chianina, Romagnola and others have come, and while there might be a handful of these remaining, they never caught on in a major way. There are still many breeds to pick from and dozens of breeders, and dozens of sales. In Yorkton alone, Heartland Livestock is hosting several breeder production sales, while the Yorkton Exhibition Association hosted its annual all-breed sale this week, and of course there are a number of on-farm sales in the area too. Yorkton is not unique in that regard, as sales are being held across the Canadian Prairies. In some respects the sales are as much a social outing as they are a marketplace for beef genetics. While less a factor today, a few decades ago farmers tended to stay pretty close to home once the snow hit. Truck technology

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist and road conditions were far from what they are today, so cold weather and snow made travel more difficult. When spring hit, heading out to a few sales was almost a tonic to overcome cabin fever. That isn’t the case today, but a sale is still a place to meet like-minded producers to discuss how cattle wintered, prices, and which team is going to win the Stanley Cup. So it’s not a huge surprise to walk into a sale barn, like Friday for the Pheasantdale Cattle Co. & Highway 5 Simmentals Production Sale and find the stands full. There were likely more people than cattle on offer which means some were looking and enjoying the camaraderie of the event but probably weren’t hauling a bull home at the end of the sale. While sales still attract a lot of people - perhaps as much culture as need -they are also turning to technology to broaden the

reach they have. More and more sales are being broadcast live via the Internet, which allows producers to watch from anywhere, and bid through the click of a mouse. “It seems to be a trend,” said Shaun Morin, manager of the Yorkton Exhibition Association. Morin said there are many bull sales each spring, adding “guys can’t get to them all.” However a farmer can come in from chores, turn on his computer “and watch the sale for an hour then go back to doing whatever he was doing.” Certainly in terms of genetics, sales are not just local. In the brief time I was at the aforementioned Simmental sale, one lot was sold to a cattle producer Bruderheim, Alta. The atmosphere of the sale barn might not transfer to a computer screen well, but it will potentially mean more producers giving the cattle a look. It is likely the trend of all things to move to digital will mean a growth in Internet bull sales, but something more than trade in genetics will be lost if live auctions come to an end, although in time that does seem likely the way the world is moving in terms of most things.

No justice for future generations Looking back over this week and some of the events that have been in the news, I’ve been considering a very difficult issue. This decision could impact the rest of my life, or really anyone’s life, and could be something I regret for as long as I live. I’m questioning whether or not it’s worth it to ever have children because currently, bringing kids into this world is unfair and cruel, and I can’t bring myself to bring that kind of pain to anyone. This is how I see it: I’ve always been athletic. I began skating, softball and soccer when I was really young, lacing up my first pair of skates (with Mom’s help) when I was three. From there I progressed to softball, figure skating, volleyball and golf, and now that I’m ancient, women’s soccer. Sports have always been important to me, and

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me they’re something that I always planned to pass on to offspring of my own someday. Some distant, distant day into the future when I’m less selfish and more interested in children as a whole. And I’ve always figured that I’d end up with someone who also really dug sports and who also wanted kids who rocked at hockey, or football or even cheerleading, so long as they really, really loved it. (Though cheerleading would be a tough one for me to get into. But I guess my mom managed to, so maybe it’s possible.)

I’ve always seen sports as a part of my life, gradually shifting from life as an athlete, to studentathlete, to recreationalathlete, and finally to the parent of an athlete. Being a hockey mom and driving a van full of disgusting hockey equipment and equally smelly pre-teen boys sounds like it could be fun. Especially because I wouldn’t give up any of my bad driving habits and would horrify the passengers of my vehicle, while always arriving safely and on time. But I’m wondering if this future that has always

A lesson in the Irish on St. Patty’s Day What is St. Patrick’s Day and why is it celebrated? Freda Henry gave a presentation at the Estevan Public Library on March 17 for those who wanted to learn a little bit more about Ireland, and why we all celebrate with the Irish each year, regardless of our family’s heritage. Henry, who lived in Northern Ireland until the early 1970s, has since lived in Moose Jaw. She said St. Patrick’s Day was not always what it is now. It only recently became a national holiday for the Irish. “When I was growing up you put on your shamrock, and you went to mass,” she said. Now schools and businesses close up, and it’s celebrated worldwide. She noted that St. Patrick is known for ridding the Irish island of snakes. About 20 people attended the presentation, including a couple of other people who immigrated from Ireland.

Henry also touched on the political situation that she grew up under. She was part of a mixed neighbourhood with both protestant and Roman Catholic people and said she could determine what religion someone was when they called asking for her father, by whether they called him Billy or Liam. She was a nurse in 1970 and most of the surgeries she was part of were gunshot wounds. “That’s why I moved to Moose Jaw. It was too difficult to deal with.” She goes back to Ireland every year and said a lot of progress has been made in the two countries, noting that there is a lot of forgiveness on both sides. “The people there actually have very good hearts. They were just born into (the prejudices). If you grow up in hostility, you will be hostile.” Henry also showed several slides of Northern Ireland that people don’t associate with the country,

like sandy beaches by the sea that allow for some of the best surfing opportunities in the world. She also noted some of the superstitions of the Irish, like the black cat, which brings good luck over there but bad luck here. Henry said that her son, who was born in Canada but now lives in the United States, often asks her if she needs to talk to everybody. As the Irish are natural chitchatterers, she may not have a choice. It’s in her blood. “I’d talk to the devil,” she said. “The Irish have the gift of gab. The Irish are storytellers, I think you know that. They tell stories but it isn’t always the truth.” She said when telling their stories, the Irish are prone to exaggeration. She has her own slips of hyperbole, saying that when she first arrived off the plane in Saskatchewan, “I thought I was in Siberia.” Now she said she’ll go back to Ireland and when they complain about it being 7 C, she’ll scoff.

seemed like a pleasant, far-off goal, is not going to happen for me. And while it is a factor in my decision, I’m not considering being childless because I refuse to put innocent children into the hands of coaches and adults who only seek to exploit and abuse them. Though obviously this is a factor. I know, it can be argued that not all kids are harmed by their coaches. I’m a clear example of a kid who made it through numerous teams and just as many coaches completely unscathed, minus a few tears and an unfortunate habit of swearing like a sailor when I’m frustrated. And there are lots of great things that can come from being a part of a team. Again, pulling from my own experiences, self-confidence, a sense of humour and competitive drive are just a few of the qualities a young athlete can pick up from being a teammate. However, as we’ve learned, young athletes can also be taken advantage of. As has been reported in the news lately, several men have stepped forward to

accuse Graham James of sexual abuse that occurred over the course of their young hockey careers. Each of these men has described the emptiness and loss brought on by years of James’ abuse, and have spoken of how their years playing for James translated painfully into their adult lives. These courageous men have stepped forward to protect future children from James and his abuse. They are educating the world on the power held by coaches, and the reality that this power can be twisted. They are great examples of all the best qualities of athletes, and should make any young woman like myself want to pop out a bunch of babies and strap them to a hockey stick and let them loose on the local outdoor rink. And again, the reality of sexual abuse in youth sport teams isn’t the reason behind my consideration. I’m considering this decision because our Canadian justice system cannot be trusted to punish those responsible for endless years of pain, confusion and horror. Our justice

system lets monsters walk away with only a slap on the wrist. Our justice system protects a monster’s privacy from embarrassment and shame, despite the fact that monsters, like James, have left numerous children with nothing but embarrassment and shame. Our justice system pardoned Graham James after 18 months in his first sentence, and set him free. Our justice system requires James to serve only two years in prison for the acts that he has committed against an unknown number of young men. Our justice system has sex offenders across the country celebrating, because Tuesday, they emerged victorious. No child of mine will be born into a Canada so disturbing. How could I bring innocence into a world where two years of a monster’s life is all that is required after ruining the lives of so many? I hope to never be so cruel. You can e-mail Tonaya at tonaya.marr@gmail. com or send her a tweet @TonayaMarr. She’ll get back to you.

What themed retirement community would you want to live in?

He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker

Retirement communities designed to attract specific, like-minded people are becoming a big deal for baby boomers. Neither the He nor She writers of this section are very close to retiring yet, but we can still dream. Maybe my senior self would be interested in the the sci-fi community. I’ve been into a lot of sci-fi and space opera lately, but I’m concerned that would be filled with other old people who are way nerdier than I am. I don’t want my nerdiness to be dwarfed by everyone else’s in the community. Part of my problem is that my interests can be very fleeting. A retirement community would be a big commitment. If I chose the sci-fi community because I watched 2001 the night before making the decision, and was then surrounded by a bunch of ex-comicbook-store dwellers with surgically enhanced vulcan ears, I might find myself ostracized by the very community I thought I would belong to. This could make retiring, what I imagine as the ultimate stress-free decision, an extremely stressful time. It would rank up there with that decision everyone makes between 18 and 22 when deciding what job they will do for the next 40-odd years. Retiring will become that decision all over again, where people will have to scrutinize over what kind of people they will want to live around during their golden years. That’s a lot of responsibility for a 65-year-old. Maybe this themed retirement community isn’t such a good idea. Instead of a man without a country, I would be a man without a retirement community. My interests are too varied and I rarely get overly excited about any one thing. I guess I would be stuck in the vanilla-themed community with a golf course, Thursday night euchre and 8:30 curfew. Everyone will be accepted as a person who can’t make the tough decisions. That’s kind of a theme.

By: Tonaya Marr

What themed retirement community would you want to be a part of? First, I just want to say that the fact that there are themed retirement communities is awesome. It’s fantastic that people who can afford to retire not only in style, but in a community that’s themed to their taste, have the opportunity to do so. If I get the chance to choose a themed retirement home (assuming that I someday get to retire — fingers crossed), I’d probably want to go into one that is Harry Potter themed. Imagine: instead of the normal retirement community of pastel buildings and paved, winding pathways, a Hogwarts castle-inspired building, with the little community of Hogsmeade available for nearby visits to play shuffleboard and Exploding Snap. Seriously, I could wake up in my house dormatory (I’d probably be a Slytherin — don’t judge me), throw on a pair of slippers, shuffle down the hallway to the Great Hall and be force fed some sort of gruel cleverly disguised by names like “Ice Mice” and “Treacle Tart.” Following breakfast, I could attend magic classes and work on my spell casting or potion making. Because the best part of this community is that in order to get in, you have to agree to pretend that magic is real and that all spells and potions actually work. So if some elderly woman waves her wand and yells “Accio!” while pointing at you, you’d have to stumble your way toward her, pretending that you were being summoned. Or, even better, if someone wanted to use a Polyjuice potion to turn into someone else, they would wear a name tag with the name of the person whose image they’d borrowed and all other residents would be required to go along with it. Physical activity could be playing Quidditch in the yard or pretending to run away from giant Acromantula spiders. Seriously, it would be such a great time. Can I be elderly now, please?

Wild winter latest adventure for Estevan youth The cadets give a local youth the adventures of a lifetime, time and time again. Johnathon Klassen’s most recent adventure landed him in Canmore during the last week of February, climbing ice and sleeping outside. That’s where he feels most at home. The 17-year-old is off again this weekend to Edmonton where he will be looking to qualify for a six-week parachute training course this summer in the Alberta capital. From Feb. 21 to 28, Johnathon was with a group of 10 other cadets from across the country taking part in the army cadets’ Wild Winter 2012 expedition. It was a week of ice climbing and cross-country skiing. For Johnathon, it’s more than just the adventure that makes these outings so worthwhile, it’s also the friendships he builds with his fellow cadets, as well as the instructors. “I’ve been basically all over Canada,” he said. “I have friends, and I’ve met people from all over Canada. A lot people (I know) here in Estevan will sit around play their X-Box, I’m just like ‘Well, I’m going to go ice climbing for a week, I’ll see you later.’ You just meet a lot more people at cadet camps.” He said those friendships are often stronger than those he has with people he meets at school because they have the cadets in common, and cadets is very important to Johnathon. He’s been a cadet since

Local army cadet Johnathon Klassen took part in Wild Winter 2012, a cadet program that is part of a national youth development program. Shown above is Johnathon on the side a glacier. he was 12 years old, joining at the earliest possible chance. Every summer he’s off to cadet training camps and now that he’s reached the required fitness level, he is able to take part in the adventure camps, like the summer’s Rocky Mountain camp. After going through some of those camps, expeditions like Wild Winter are now available to him. “You kind of work up to it,” he said. “I try to jump at every opportunity, but sometimes, I know I’m signed up for three different things right now that are taking place at the same time, so it’s like, whatever I get, I take.” Johnathon is a determined teenager and has his sights set on a career in the army. All these adventures will be an advantage for

him when he takes the step out of cadets. If he does go to Edmonton this summer for parachute training, that will be a certification he will have if he joins the army. He’s also very happy to be paid to get the training. It may not serve him well in the Prairies, but he is now avalanche certified, as they underwent training while cross-country skiing. “We got avalanche certified and did an overnight camp for the crosscountry skiing. We drove to a campsite and skied all day. We just found a spot and set up our tents,” he said. “The next morning, we picked up our campsite and skied back.” The Estevan (Elks) PPCLI Army Cadet Corps, of which Johnathon is a

Gain control over dandruff DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How does one eliminate dandruff? I have had it for months and have tried many, many shampoos without making any progress. I can’t wear a dark suit coat. I look like I’ve just come in from a snow blizzard. Please give me some sort of program that I can follow. -- H.H. ANSWER: Dandruff’s official name is seborrheic (SEB-uh-REE-ik) dermatitis. “Dermatitis” indicates skin inflammation. Seborrhea is an overproduction of oil, sebum. Many with dandruff deny they have an oily scalp. They say their scalp is dry. That can be the case, but seborrheic dermatitis flourishes on skin with an abundance of oil glands. The scalp is one of those places, but not the only place. The flakes that land on your shoulders are sloughed-off skin cells. Dandruff usually is quite itchy. Scratching dislodges the dead skin cells.

A yeast with the name Malassezia contributes to the problem. It’s probably not the actual cause, but it aids and abets the dandruff process. I’m sure you have tried many shampoos. Let me suggest ones that contain salicylic acid, zinc or selenium. Scalpicin, Head and Shoulders and Selsun Blue are three brand names. There are others. The way you use the shampoo is as important as your choice of shampoo. Wash your hair daily with one of these products. Massage it into your scalp, and let the shampoo remain on your scalp for five minutes. Do this for a minimum of three weeks. If you have an

improvement, you can cut back on your shampooing to every other day. If there has been no improvement, then get a shampoo that attacks the Malassezia yeast. Nizoral A-D (1 percent ketoconazole) is a brand name you can find easily. Do the daily shampoo drill with one of these for three weeks. If after all this you still have dandruff, you need a doctor’s intervention. The doctor can prescribe more powerful agents, ones that have cortisone that can calm the inflamed skin. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc.

bottom of your shoe. You’d also have a day leader, and that person would be in charge of your group, to get everything done and get everyone fed.” The cadets were split into two groups, and Johnathon was a group leader for both skiing and ice climbing. He had done rock climbing last summer at an adventure camp, so that helped when it came to ice climbing, but he said it’s still a very different game. “With ice climbing, you can put your ice picks anywhere, because you don’t have to look for a hand hold that’s three feet out of your reach. I like ice climbing because it’s easier, but the ice tends to fall on you, and that’s not fun.”

member, does a winter exercise each year, so he is used to the cold weather. “A few other people were from the big cities, so they weren’t used to stepping off your skis and sinking to your waist.” He said they spent time with Yamnuska, a civilian group that teaches about the outdoors, and they ran the expedition, organizing the ice climbing and skiing. “We’d go out to a certain spot and ice climb all day, but we’d also help each other with the crampons— those are the spikes for the

Twenty years ago, I dragged Yorkton This Week editor Murray Lyons into my school newspaper office during a career day, handed him a handful of newspapers, and asked him to critique it. Two weeks later, he asked me to add 150 words to one of my columns, because he would like to run it. Would I be willing to write a column every two weeks? The first publication of my column was March 20, 1992, 20 years ago this week. I was 17 years old, in Grade 11, and editor of the Yorkton Regional High School newspaper, The Regional Rap. Now older, fatter, uglier, definitely more married and fatherly, and just perhaps slightly wiser, I am still writing. Looking back, that first column has set the tone for the thousand-plus columns that followed.

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile Here it is, under the headline “An echo boomer wonders, where is the good life now?” We were all born 20 years too late. Just think about it. Nothing that our generation has is considered “good” anymore. Drug warfare is in the streets of larger cities. Poverty, especially for children, is on a dramatic rise the world throughout. Radio stations won’t even play our music anymore. Instead they play “golden oldies,” 20 -30 years old. We are the forgotten generation. Between the late ‘40s and the ‘60s were born the “baby boomers.” The baby boomers make up the largest age group of our society. They were the hippies of the ‘60s, the punks of the ‘70s, the yuppies of the ‘80s, and the middle-aged of the ‘90s. They have the money and the numbers. Obviously much of our business and infrastructure is set around them. We, the “echo” to the boom generation, are

getting the leftovers. The leftovers? Like what? Think about it. Our schools are being closed because of low enrolments. We may have to revert back to a system of boarding schools because it costs too much to have so many of them. The governments put in by our parents have spent more money that they didn’t have than our children or even our grandchildren will be able to pay back. The AIDS epidemic is something we have to deal with. Our parents didn’t. Wanton disregard for the environment by the “me” generation over the past 40 years has left us to pick up the pieces and try to save our spoiled planet. We don’t have a united country. Our standard of living has fallen below what it was before, even though, on average, there are two providers in each family now, not one. We have no hope of having social programs like Canada Pension Plan

or Old Age Security, because the baby boomers will have bankrupted it. Heck, we don’t even get music good enough that radio stations will play anymore. Many of these things will be next to impossible to correct in the space of our lifetimes. Things like AIDS and the national debt will be with us for a long time. But even that is irrelevant when we consider the state of our environment. Our parents’ generation have burned more rain forests, polluted more air and water, overfished, overdeveloped and overpopulated than we can ever replace. This makes me think of a song by Alabama, Pass it on Down, whose lyrics say, “Let’s leave some blue up above us.” The next time your parents tell you you’ve got it good, tell them to listen to that song. Let’s see who’s got it good. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Over the past 20 years his column has appeared in the Preeceville Progress, Canora Courier, Norquay Northstar, Kamsack Times, Yorkton This Week, Saskatoon Journal, Rosetown Eagle, Battlefords NewsOptimist and Southeast Trader Express. Casino ephemera Q: For years I have been collecting cardboard casino coin containers and have accumulated at least 50 of them from casinos in Canada, Illinois, Arizona and Las Vegas. Because of the new ticket machines in the casinos, I believe my cardboard containers are now collectible. -- Tony, Sun City West, Ariz. A: I contacted several collectors who buy, sell and trade casino gambling items such as tokens, chips and even ashtrays. There was no interested in your cardboard coin containers. This doesn’t necessarily mean they have no value. Have you considered listing them on eBay? *** Q: My wife has been an avid book collector all of her life. Now that we are retired, we are thinking of selling some of her collections but have no idea if they are worth anything. Two of the series we are especially interested in are early and first editions of the Nancy Drew series and early copies of the Motor Boys books published during the

early 20th century. -- William, Port Orange, Fla. A: There were 22 volumes in the Motor Boys series, all published between 1906 and 1924. Most titles sell for about $5. Typical are “The Motor Boys in Mexico” (1906), “The Motor Boys Across the Plains” (1907), and “The Motor Boys on the Wing” (1912), all available at www.abe.com for less than $10. The first Nancy Drew book was “The Secret of the Old Clock,” published in 1930 that featured 16-yearold Nancy searching for a missing will to prevent the Topham family from inheriting an estate they do not deserve. That first edition in excellent condition and with cover often retails for about $300. To get a better idea of the value of your books, I recommend you purchase two excellent guides: “All

About Collecting Girls’ Series Books” and “All About Collecting Boys’ Series Books,” both by JohnAxe and published by Hobby House Books. They can be ordered through www.amazon.com. *** Q: Recently you answered a question about old records from a man named Steve in Binghamton, N.Y. Could you send me his address? -- Robert, New Port Richey, Fla. A: As soon as I answer a letter, it goes into the shredder beside my desk. This is done for security purposes and to protect the readers who contact me through this column. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Evidence of teens in the house Thank You

There are many indicators that there may be a teen living in your home. For some it may simply be larger shoes that you need to step over in the doorway or perhaps your grocery bill has increased so much that you feel like you are feeding an entire army. One mom told me she is reminded that a teen is living with her because whenever the fridge door is open, her son can be found drinking milk or orange juice directly from the carton. Another mom told me she’s afraid to go into her daughter’s bedroom because there are always clothes strewn across the floor, following a devastating morning of fashion fiasco. One dad said he knows there are teens in his house because his power bill has gone through the roof. His teens stay up later than he does and he wakes every morning to a house with all the lights on. He finds this very frustrating. There are so many wonderful indications that teenagers live in a home.

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life Teenagers bring fun, laughter and occasionally dirty feet and bad attitudes, but we wouldn’t change that for the world. It’s all part of the journey of parenting. The other night I was quickly reminded that I have a teenager living in our home. I was preparing to go out to a fundraising dinner for “Kids Cancer” and our younger kids were out playing with the neigbourhood children while my eldest daughter was out at a fundraising dinner for her youth group (seemed to be a night of fundraising for the whole family). We had been out all day and I hadn’t left a lot of time for me to get ready so it was all action in our house as I put on my makeup, got dressed and prepared to

do my hair. This is when I knew I had a teenager in the house! I had decided to do my hair in a particular style that demanded an extreme amount of hairspray. I prepared my hair by curling, back combing and pinning it all in prep for the hairspray to create the final look. I carefully reached across my dressing table, holding my hair in place, and reached for my large can of hairspray. When I picked it up I knew something wasn’t right ... I was OUT of hairspray. Yes, my teenage daughter had decided to curl her poker straight hair for her event and ended up using all of my hairspray. Panic set in as I had no idea what I was going to do.

The car was there to pick us up, the friends we were going with were ready, my husband was calling me and there I stood with my fiercely back combed hair and no spray. In this moment a beautiful image of my teenage daughter flashed in front of my face, I looked in the mirror at myself and realized I was raising a teenager and times had indeed shifted. As my husband continued to call me and get me out the door I suddenly remembered I had a small bottle of hairspray tucked in a handbag that I travel with. I rushed into my closet, found the bottle and began to spray. The day was saved. I didn’t have to change my look or reinvent my hairstyle, I simply made do with what I had. As I kissed my younger two goodbye for the night and raced out of the house I asked my son to put hairspray on our grocery list .... Susan J Sohn getreallive.com susan@getreallive. com

Review of Slave Lake response on the way PROVINCIAL SASKATOON - A report says a deal the province made for a long-term care centre in Saskatoon will cost taxpayers millions. The report by University of Manitoba economist John Loxley calculates the cost of the government’s funding arrangement with Amicus Health Care Inc. Amicus, a subsidiary of the Catholic Health Ministry of Saskatchewan, is building a 100-unit long-term care facility. Loxley says the deal is unusual because the province is breaking from its normal practice by financing the full cost of borrowing and covering the bills if Amicus can’t pay its mortgage. He says it will cost taxpayers as much as $20 million more than if the government used traditional financing.

EDMONTON - Alberta is launching a formal review of how well it responded to the fire last May that devastated the town of Slave Lake. The firm KPMG is conducting the two-stage review, which will include interviews with emergency responders who handled the evacuation and some of the 7,000 residents who fled their homes. KPMG is to submit an interim report by the May 15 anniversary of the wildfires that destroyed 400 homes and caused more than $700 million damage. A final report with recommendations is to be presented to Alberta Municipal Affairs before the fall. *** OTTAWA - A recent federal health warning to avoid certain beef products due to possible E.coli contamination has been expanded to cover 135 products under a variety of

NATIONAL

brand names. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the beef was produced at Establishment 761 between July 1, 2011 and Feb. 15, 2012. The CFIA says there has been one reported illness from the beef, which was distributed nationally to retail stores, restaurants and institutions such as hospitals. Affected brand names include Best Value, Calgary Stampede, Country Morning Gold, Exclusive Selections, Grillhouse, Irresistibles, Keg, Licks, Maple Lodge Farms and PC. The CFIA says the affected products are identified by the Establishment number 761 that appears on the packages, cartons or cases. *** HALIFAX - Five stamps commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic will

be released by Canada Post on April 5. The stamps, created by designers Dennis Page and Oliver Hill of Halifax, depict various parts of the Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912, with the loss of 1,500 lives. A souvenir sheet of four stamps depict the bow of the Titanic stretched over a map of the Atlantic Ocean between the points of Southampton in England and Halifax. The sheet of stamps also shows workers below the ship’s three propellers. INTERNATIONAL MEXICO CITY - A strong, long 7.6 earthquake with an epicenter in Guerrero state shook central southern Mexico on Tuesday, swaying buildings in Mexico City and sending frightened workers and residents into the streets.

weighed 40 kilograms (88 pounds) by then, or about as much as a robust pre-teen, and her health suffered. Enhanced analysis of a photograph taken just months after Earhart’s Lockheed Electra plane vanished shows what experts think may be the landing gear of the aircraft protruding from the waters off the remote island of Nikumaroro, in what is now the Pacific nation of Kiribati, they said. Armed with that analysis by the State Department, historians, scientists and salvagers from The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, are returning to the island in July in the hope of finding the wreckage of Earhart’s plane and perhaps even the remains of the pilot and her navigator Fred Noonan.

Coalers win back-to-back championships ship on Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over the Midale Mustangs in Game 5 of the series, on home ice. The Mustangs had pulled out a 7-5 victory in Game 4 on Sunday to tie the series at two games apiece. Bienfait won Game 3 of the series 5-0 last Thursday. Each of the first five games in the series have been won by the home team. The sixth and final outing was the only one to break that cycle. Meanwhile, the Coalers lost the opener of the provincial A final 6-5 to the Shellbrook Elks on Saturday in Bienfait. The Elks led 3-2 after the first period and 6-3 after the second. Game 2 is Saturday in Shellbrook. A third and deciding game, if necessary, would be played March 31 at Spectra Place in Estevan.

The Bienfait Coalers are back-to-back champions of the Big Six Hockey League. The Coalers defeated the Midale Mustangs 5-2 on Wednesday in Midale to win the Big Six final in six games. The series was a rematch of last year’s final. Defenceman Lucas Stubel, who graduated from the Bruins last year, led the Coalers with a hat trick. Two of those goals came in a 29-second span in the third period to put the game out of reach. The Estevan native’s first goal, back in the second period, was the game-winner. Bienfait also got goals from Lorne Tytlandsvik and former Weyburn Red Wing Brennan Wrigley in the first period. The Coalers placed themselves one win away from the league champion-

Stray gloves morph into puppet players Any mismatched, mateless stretch gloves or mittens stuffed in your kids’ backpacks or in baskets by the back-door hooks? Don’t toss out that blue right-hand mitten or the purple-and-white striped left glove. Bring these odd combinations together for creative storytelling by the handful when you effortlessly turn them into puppets using your kids’ favorite plush toy characters. You can make stray-glove puppets with broken or outgrown earmuffs, too. It’s as easy as 1-2-3: 1. Have one child slip on a glove or mitten while you cut a 2-inch piece of selfsticking fabric fastener, such as Velcro. Press it on the top of the glove near your child’s knuckles. 2. Put a corresponding piece of fastener on the underside of a small, lightweight plush toy. Let your child choose a favorite character. Creepy-crawler spiders and worms, or sea creatures such as a crab or fish are especially fun. Press it firmly to adhere well. (For extra durability, sew the Velcro to the toy and glove by hand with a few stitches.) To use the puppet, attach the toy to the glove or mitten where the Velcro pieces meet.

Put it on your hand, and put the characters into action. For example: Wiggle fingers to mimic spider legs, fins on a fish or the wings of a bird. If you have a duck perched on a blue mitten, move your hand slowly to create the illusion of it swimming over ripples on a pond. 3. You also can take the “muff” off of broken or outgrown earmuffs, and glue or put Velcro on the bottom of the muff and on top of a glove. Sew bells on the muff for eyes or simply glue on googly eyes from a craft store. Sew or glue on feet cut out from felt at the end of each glove finger-tip.

When they’re all made, with the flick of a wrist, your kids will have fun acting out a scene from their imaginations or favorite stories. Tip: At bedtime, reverse the roles and instead of reading a book to your kids, let them create an instant, improvised drama with their cast of stray-glove puppet players. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Bryce Harper a phenom in waiting He hasn’t played a single game in the big leagues yet, but Bryce Harper may already be more of a household name than 80 per cent of Major League Baseball players. If he’s not a household name where you happen to live, just wait. Harper won’t be 20 until this October and has been on the national sports radar since about the age of 14. He made the cover of Sports Illustrated when he was a 17-year-old high school phenom in Las Vegas and added to the myth when he hit the longest home run in the history of Tropicana Field, home of the Rays, during a showcase for high school stars. His power is legendary: Besides the Tropicana blast, he also belted a 570-foot home run in high school that had every pro scout salivating at the mere thought of picking him in the amateur draft. Ultimately, that stroke of luck went to Washington Nationals, who chose Harper in 2010, one year after having the good fortune of picking the consensus best pitcher in decades, Stephen Strasburg. If both Strasburg and Harper live up to their press clippings, the Nationals could bring more attention to Washington than Barack Obama going out to the street for the morning paper in his underwear. Harper was a catcher through high school, but his power and speed (he mythically scored regularly from second base on wild pitches) persuaded the Nationals to turn him into an outfielder to save wear and tear on his multi-milliondollar body. You’ll almost certainly be hearing plenty about Harper this summer, even though he will start the season with Triple A Syracuse, but one of the reasons he’ll be so well known is that he has already developed a reputation of being ... well, a bit of a jerk. In fact, Gentleman’s Quarterly magazine recently featured Harper and focused on his cockiness, calling him “the LeBron of baseball.” That translates to the “Sean Avery of hockey.” In the minors last year, he reportedly

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist blew a kiss to the pitcher while jogging around the bases following a home run. He’ll be the type of player hometown fans love and opposition fans despise. Love him or hate him, the people in your household, if you follow baseball, will probably have an opinion on Bryce Harper before too long. • So why did Tiger Woods withdraw from the Cadillac Championship at Doral a couple of weeks ago? Said one Twitter cynic, who doubted Woods’ story of a strained Achilles: “He was a lot closer to the parking lot than the lead.” • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “The Washington Nationals will be selling an eight-pound “Strasburger” named after pitcher Stephen Strasburg. In a related story, the Yankees are thinking of naming their overpriced hot dogs after Alex Rodriguez.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Five-time Canadian curling champ Colleen Jones has unretired to try to get into the Olympic trials, where four-time champ Jennifer Jones already has a berth. In a related story, it just got harder to keep up with the Joneses.” • Headline at Fark. com: “49ers sign Randy Moss; organization begins treatments for clubhouse cancer.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald: “In tennis, Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Akgul Amanmuradova in the inaugural Spell Check Classic.” • Roger Bannister, 82, to AP, putting his breakthrough 1954 feat in perspective: “It’s amazing that more people have climbed Mount Everest than have broken the four-minute mile.” • The Cleveland Browns announced that they will not pursue Peyton Manning. Said Mike

Jackie Fitzsimmons 421-6636

Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “In related news, I am announcing that I will not pursue Penelope Cruz.” • Headline at TheOnion.com: “Recent 6-Game Losing Streak Shows Jeremy Lin Finally Starting To Mesh With Knicks.” • Steve Rushin of SI.com on Twitter: “NCAA’s ‘March Madness’ is a total ripoff of our local Hyundai dealer’s ‘March Mania” sales event.’” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Prized freeagent QB Peyton Manning and the Tennessee Titans huddled for eight hours in Nashville on Wednesday. It would’ve been three, but he kept changing his menu order when they broke for lunch.” • Another one from Perry: “Randall McDaniel, who plowed his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame

as a 6-foot-3, 287-pound guard for the Minnesota Vikings, is now an elementary-school teacher in Minnetrista, Minn. Classroom discipline, we assume, is not a problem.” • From David Letterman’s The Late Show Top 10 reasons this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue is the best ever: “Ten models, nine swimsuits.” • Comedy writer Alex

Kaseberg: “Harvard was in the NCAA tournament, but UCLA was not. That is like a hot dog eating contest where Joey Chestnut is replaced by Ashley Olsen.” • Two more Kaseberg quips, on Harvard making it into the NCAA tourney: - “Harvard calls March Madness ‘Spring-induced competitive-related temporary psychosis.’” - “Not to say there

is a discrepency between the educations of Harvard and the other teams in the NCAA tournament, but many of the teams could not spell NCAA. When asked how they did on their SAT scores, the other teams besides Harvard said: “We don’t play in that conference.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

Blue Bombers extend head coach’s contract

NATIONAL COCHRANE, Alta. - One of Graham James’s victims is criticizing the justice system over the twoyear sentence given to James for sexually abusing former players. Todd Holt played for James in the Western Hockey League in the 1980s and ‘90s and was abused along with his cousin Theo Fleury. Holt calls the sentence a national travesty but also says he’s not angry. He says James conned the judge and is now laughing, knowing that justice for him is but a blip on the radar. Holt says the saddest

part is that there are many people like Graham James across Canada. James pleaded guilty in December to repeatedly sexually abusing Holt and Fleury. *** WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have rewarded head coach Paul LaPolice for the club’s dramatic turnaround. The Bombers announced Tuesday they have signed LaPolice to a twoyear contract extension through 2014. LaPolice, who is entering his third season with Winnipeg, guided the team

to a Grey Cup appearance in November after finishing last in the CFL in 2010. *** LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Heather Nedohin likes to let the horses run, while her third Beth Iskiw wants to pull on the reins. It’s a relationship that seems to work for Canada’s back end at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship. Despite losing their first game Monday, Canada was still in the lead pack at 4-1 alongside South Korea and Sweden heading into Tuesday. Canada started slow in

both its games, but came back to beat the Czech Republic 8-7 before falling 9-7 to Denmark in an extra end.

INTERNATIONAL DENVER - The big deal is done. Peyton Manning is a Denver Bronco. A person familiar with negotiations says that Manning and the Broncos completed his five-year contract worth about $96 million on Tuesday morning. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Manning is to be introduced at a news conference at Broncos headquar-

75

ters later. The agreement ends a wild chase for perhaps the most valued free agent in the history of the NFL, a quarterback who has won an unprecedented four league MVP awards and took the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl victory in 2007. *** BARCELONA, Spain - Spanish police have detained 10 people involved in an international doping network involving professional cycling and athletics. “A criminal network” that provided performanceenhancing drugs to athletes

who tested positive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Spanish Vuelta, among other competitions, was dismantled according to a statement by Catalan regional police Mossos d’Esquadra, working alongside national police. “The established infrastructure in Spain is characterized by an organization that had many contacts in the world of elite sport,” the statement read, adding the police had not discounted more arrests in an operation that has reportedly been nicknamed ‘Operation Skype.’

Top twenty one car care tips (NC)—Owning a car is a big investment. It requires regular maintenance to keep its value and to ensure your safety. To make sure you have a winning hand when it comes to caring for your vehicle, here are 21 of the best – and easiest – tips: 1. Examine your paint for new scratches frequently. 2. Repair scratches as soon as possible. Taking care of them quickly prevents rust and prevents more costly removal later. To remove light scratches, look for quality, do-it-yourself products when you shop, like those from in the Quixx auto care line. Most popular is their High Performance Paint Scratch Remover. Deep scratches may require professional sanding. 3. Never use dish soap to wash your car. It will aggravate existing scratches or cause new ones. 4. Rinse your car before washing to remove grit particles, which could scratch paintwork as you wash. 5. Use two buckets – one for soap, one for clean water for rinsing – when washing your vehicle. 6. Use a water blade not a towel, to remove most of the water, followed by a synthetic chamois to remove the excess. 7. Wax your car twice a year to protect its paint and help maintain its value. Polish the car in between

waxes to clean, protect and maintain shine. 8. Check for UV damage on your headlights. If yellowed or cloudy, a product like Quixx Headlight Restoration Kit can completely restore them to gain up to 4 seconds of reaction time. 9. Remove bird droppings as soon as possible. Soak a cloth in hot water and put it over the area for 5 minutes, then wipe away with a microfiber cloth. 10. Lighten your load. If you have more than a dozen keys and other knick-knacks hanging from your keychain, it's time to lighten up. The weight can wear down the tumblers in your ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure. 11. “E” does not mean “Enough.” Don't let your car's gas tank get to empty. Not only is it dangerous to drive with low fuel levels, it is also damaging to your car. Sediment from gasoline settles at the bottom of every gas tank. When your gas level is low, you force your car to use the dirtiest gas in its tank for fuel and risk this dirt getting into your car's fuel line and engine. 12. Park indoors or in the shade as much as possible to protect your car's paint from damaging UV rays, bird droppings, falling branches and other environmental elements.

13.Replace wiper blades every 6 to 12 months, as they become cracked, brittle and worn due to ozone, contaminants, exposure to sunlight and temperature changes. This action could save your windshield, and your life. 14. Get more mileage out of your tires. Use the PSI (pounds per square inch) recommendation on the door jam of your car, instead of the one on your tires to keep them properly inflated. 15. Check the battery. Once per year, a car care professional should make sure it is working properly and holding its charge. 16. Check tire tread for wear. 17. Never, ever text and drive. 18. Vacuum the car's interior regularly, especially in areas where road salt is used. Salt can go through carpets and rust the car from the inside out. 19. Wipe away spills immediately, Soft drinks in particular can be corrosive. 20. Keep up with oil changes. The frequency depends on the make and model of your car, so check with your manufacturer. 21. Always wear a seatbelt. Products are found in stores like Canadian Tire and PartSource, or more information on this topic is available online at www. quixx-usa.com.

The ugly truth about car scratches (NC)—It's spring and time to finally wash your car to get the winter's accumulated salt and debris off your ride. Brace yourself. Your clean car may not look as good as you thought it would. The problem? Fine and not-so-fine scratches, especially on the bottom panels where gravel, salt and other gunk was thrown up against your car all winter. Here's the ugly truth from specialists in this field: • Every car will get scratched, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. • The most common way to scratch your car is by washing it either at drive-thru car washes or doing it yourself with cheap soaps or detergents that don't properly lift dirt. • Professional scratch repair could cost anywhere from $200 - $1200 or more. • Untreated scratches

can quickly rust and become difficult and expensive to repair. • Scratches will instantly devalue your vehicle, which will cause you to lose money on the future sale of the car or a lease return. • Most scratch removers just cover up or temporarily clean scratches and do not work on scratches deep enough to feel with your fingernail. Auto detailers and a leading consumer advocacy organization all agree that small scratches can be repaired permanently by following a few easy steps: 1. Examine your car's paint for new scratches frequently. 2. Use a high quality car wash to clean your car. Avoid using dish soap, which can only aggravate and cause scratches. 3. Do-it-yourself products such as Quixx are available places like Cana-

dian Tire or PartSource. This is a high performance paint scratch remover and if directions are followed the car will look like new. More information is available online at www. quixx-usa.com.

Are you in a fog about headlight safety? (NC)—Experts agree that one of the most dangerous driving hazards is fog, putting motorists, pedestrians and animals at risk. In a single year, Transport Canada recorded 23 fatal collisions resulting from vehicles hitting animals. Environment Canada tells us that places like St John's (N.L.), Sudbury (Ont.), Set-Iles, (Que.) and Prince George (B.C.) are in the top 12 of our nation's foggiest cities. Headlights play a major role The effects of yellowed and hazy headlights in fog has become such a concern that last year, CAA-Quebec released a study showing that damaged automobile headlight lenses (from harsh weather, abrasives and debris) become so opaque, they can reduce lighting effectiveness to half that of headlights in good condition. Tests conducted on a closed track confirmed: a motorist travelling 50 km/h at night will have four more seconds to react to an emergency if the headlights are in good condition and undamaged. The best way to prepare and protect yourself is to make sure headlights are clean and clear and at optimal visibility, experts say. Restoring headlights to their original crystal-clear and scratch-free finish can

help you get back those crucial four seconds to help save both human and animal lives. Quixx, a leading au-

U-

tomobile care and maintenance company, is calling on Canadian automobile owners and operators to ensure their headlights are

in top working condition. “We are serious about raising the awareness of this important safety feature of your vehicle,” says

ries of Before have become treasured currency. Suffering and desperate, the survivors gaze hungrily at the Dome -- the haven of those lucky few who managed to escape the devastation -- and recite like a prayer the long-ago promise, “Help is coming.” But Pressia has no more time to wait. She has turned 16, and now the soldiers are coming for her. In contrast, Partridge’s life under the Dome is highly civilized: lessons, school dances, mandatory gene-altering sessions -- the usual routine. But when a chance remark from his father gives reason for Partridge to hope his longlost mother might still be alive outside, he resolves to break out and find her. Of course, he is dreadfully misinformed and underprepared for what he will find

“Pure” by Julianna Baggott (Grand Central Publishing, $25.99) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Nine years ago, the Detonations turned civilization to ash. It’s the rare creature that wasn’t touched by the searing lights, burned, deformed or fused with something -metal, plastic, the earth at their feet, even other living beings. In this new landscape, man-eating Dusts and Beasts lie in wait for unwary prey, the corrupt military relentlessly prowls the streets for recruits and targets, and fading memo-

out there ... but life in the Dome may not have left him so soft as one would believe. Of course Partridge and Pressia are destined to meet, and when they do, the astonishing secrets they uncover together may just change the future of their world. The first installment in an intriguing new sci-fi series, “Pure” doesn’t stint on the horror of its premise. The pages are filled with uncomfortable, nightmarish imagery as well as flashes of macabre beauty: a boy with birds fluttering in his back, a girl joined forever to the doll she can never outgrow. “Pure” is a powerful vision of a future that is like its denizens, a Frankenstein jumble of the familiar and the unimaginable. Do you suffer from astraphobia? • It was Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw who made the following sage observation: “A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.” • We’re all familiar with the act of CPR -- we often see a film or televi-

sion character come to the rescue and save a life using the technique. And on TV, according to a recent study, CPR is shown as being successful 75 percent of the time. The reality is not quite so rosy, though. A study conducted in 2010 found that when CPR is used in real life, only about 8 percent of the patients were still alive after one month. Of those who did survive that long, 97 percent couldn’t live a

normal life. • Do you suffer from astraphobia? If so, I hope you don’t live in Florida. Those who are afraid of lightning would be terrified in the Sunshine State, especially in Tampa, known as the lightning capital of the world. • Researchers in the United Kingdom have invented a robot that eats slugs and is powered by the gas from the decaying

They have dubbed their creation the SlugBot. • For six generations, many members of the Fugate family of the Appalachian region of Kentucky have suffered from a rare blood disorder called methemoglobinemia. The disorder seems to have no adverse health effects, but it’s not at all difficult to diagnose it at a glance: Sufferers have blue skin. Not just a slight tinge, either; various family mem-

bers have been described as “blue as Lake Louise,” “the bluest woman I ever saw” and “almost purple.” *** Thought for the Day: “A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, ‘At my age, I don’t even buy green bananas.”’ -- Claude Pepper

American Cheese Meatloaf Meatloaf is a favorite comfort food, and here’s a wonderful new version to try. I predict it will become a new favorite in your family. 16 ounces extra-lean ground turkey or beef 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon dried fine breadcrumbs 1 cup finely chopped onion 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat tomato soup 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 3 (3/4-ounce) slices reduced-fat American cheese 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine meat, breadcrumbs,

Liberian pineapple nut bread

onion, green pepper and 1/3 cup tomato soup. Mix well to combine. Pat mixture into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45 minutes. 2. Stir mustard, parsley flakes and black pepper into remaining tomato soup. Spread soup mixture evenly over partially baked meatloaf. Evenly arrange cheese slices over top. Bake for an additional 15 minutes or until meatloaf is cooked through and cheese is melted. 3. Place loaf pan on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Cut into 6 servings. Freezes well. % Each serving equals: 200 calories, 8g fat, 17g protein, 15g carb., 484mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Meat, 1 Starch. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

I love the whole retro image of making homemade bread. In my mind’s eye, I picture myself in dainty, flour-covered apron taking plump, golden loaves out of the oven. The smell of freshly baked bread perfumes the house, drawing my loving family to the table. Then, I’m snapped back to reality by the realization that I barely have time to sleep at night. Besides, homemade bread takes hours to make -- or does it? The beautiful thing about a retro recipe is that you can always find a way to make it modern. I love playing with dough, whether it’s bread, pizzas or pies. Quick bread recipes allow me to re-create a delicious memory in a modern way. Quick breads provide the taste and smell of yeast breads in a fraction of the time. Most recipes for quick breads contain a chemical leavening reaction of a base, like baking soda, and an acid such as cream of tartar, lemon juice or buttermilk to produce carbon dioxide. A good-quality baking powder contains an acid and a base and only needs a liquid to activate it. The carbon dioxide that is formed makes the bread rise. It also produces a texture softer and lighter than most yeast breads. My recipe for Liberian Pineapple Nut Bread is about as retro as you

can possibly get! It’s an African recipe that I’ve modernized by adding a healthy dose of wheat bran. Wheat bran contains B vitamins, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, minerals and fiber to keep things, um, moving. The fiber in the wheat germ helps you to feel full faster, and also absorbs fat and cholesterol before it enters the blood stream. This quick bread is perfect as part of a healthy breakfast or a light snack. Best of all, it’s a delicious excuse for those days when you want to play with your food! LIBERIAN PINEAPPLE NUT BREAD Turn this quick bread into a “grab and go” breakfast or snack along with a few tablespoons of Eden Foods Organic Apple Butter, Arrowhead Mills Organic Creamy Valencia Peanut Butter or Cascadian Farms Fruit

Spreads.

baking powder, baking soda and salt into a large bowl. Mix in the toasted wheat bran and nuts. Add eggs, pineapple, water and vanilla or lemon juice. Mix together thoroughly. The dough should be moist and well-combined. 4. Scoop batter into a greased loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick or tester inserted in the middle of loaf comes out clean. Cool and wrap tightly in food-safe plastic wrap and foil. Loaf can be frozen up to 3 months.

1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Wheat Bran 1/2 cup chopped, almonds or walnuts 2 cups King Arthur Flour Organic Artisan All Purpose Flour 1/2 cup Bob’s Mills Organic Whole Wheat Pastry Flour 1 tablespoon Bob’s Red Mill Non-Aluminum Double Acting Baking Powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 cups crushed pineapple with juice 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla or fresh lemon juice

NOTE: Specialty ingredients listed in this week’s recipe can be ordered from www.Vitacost. com. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children?s author, a culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Her new cookbook is “The Kitchen Diva’s Diabetic Cookbook.” Visit her website at www.divapro.com.

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. 2. Toast the wheat bran and the nuts together in a heavy, dry pan over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep from burning. Set aside to cool. 3. Sift the flours,
