Jeers to the many drivers who think that Devonian Avenue is an autobahn. Do they not remember the traffic rules? You are to yield to your right. Jeers to the person who stole my daughter’s shoes at the leisure center pool last Friday night. They were purchased with hard-earned money, something you know nothing about. Returning them would be the right thing to do since you stole them from a child. Jeers to a lack of hot water available in the showers after a rec hockey game. It’s absolutely ridiculous and so very cold! Jeers to the people across the back alley who party in their garage and feel the need to throw their empty beer bottles into my backyard and their partially filled cases up against our back fence, spilling liquor and glass shards all over the place. From now on I will be calling the police when the party gets rocking, instead of letting boys be boys as I have in the past. Jeers to construction sites that allow their garbage to blow all over the neighbourhood.

Theatre announces musical as first show By Jordan Baker Of the Southeast Trader Express

Local live theatre in Estevan this summer will be a showcase of young Saskatchewan talent as they bring a collection of classic hits to the stage. Souris Valley Theatre announced its first production for the 2014 season, bringing a musical, featuring pop hits of the 1950s and ’60s, to Estevan with The Marvelous Wonderettes, written by Roger Bean. The show will open the evening of July 3 and run until July 19. The show features familiar hits, including Mr. Sandman, Dream Lover, It’s In His Kiss, It’s My Party, Respect, and many others. Artistic director Kenn McLeod is now involved in the process of casting four women to play the roles of Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy. “I’m very eager for it. One of the positive things is that it’s a musical that features four young actresses of which Saskatchewan can say they continue to produce an incredible amount of very talented, young theatre performers,” said McLeod. “It’s a chance to connect with a lot of homegrown talent.” Last year’s artistic director David Leyshon suggested the Wonderettes to the Souris Valley board, who brought the idea forward with McLeod when he came on board. “The show itself is quite appealing,” said the new director. “It’s got that, sort of, late-’50s and then late-’60s do-wop girl group kind of feel to it. So it’s a really fun show, where people know the songs. You may not know the show, but

Kenn McLeod you’ll know the songs.” The first act features the women at their high school prom in 1958, with the second half bringing the ladies back together 10 years later for their high school reunion. “It’s all about their life, their love and all of the high school problems they have,” said Jocelyn Anderson, theatre manager. “It’s a bit of a risk in taking a show that people don’t know, so being able to respond to that risk with songs that they know (helps) with the feeling of being able to connect with that piece, even if you don’t know it,” said McLeod, noting everyone knows The Wizard of Oz and songs like Somewhere Over the Rainbow. “Here, you can take a little bit of a risk with the programming by telling a different story that people haven’t heard, but you’re keeping it familiar with some of the songs they know.” The director said there will also be some audience participation. Just what that

will mean for theatergoers is unclear until they’re in the seats. He noted they are now putting a team together, with a musical director and beginning auditions. He has received a stack of resumes and photo headshots already. “The buzz is out there. A lot of people are interested in being a part of this, and being a part of the theatre in Estevan,” he said. McLeod said he also had a number of actors who have been to the Souris Valley Theatre contact him with interest in coming back to be a part of the Energy City programming. “We’ll have some really strong Saskatchewan talent in this show, and I’m really excited for it.” Anderson noted the theatre’s board tries to provide a musical production each year, even though many musicals have large casts, and they have to find ones that feature a more modest lineup of talent. The shows this year will run from Tuesday to

Saturday, with Thursday matinee shows, rather than last year’s schedule of Wednesday to Sunday. Anderson said they found greater turnouts during the midweek performances and wanted to capitalize on the times people most wanted to attend. Anderson said the theatre is hoping to produce two other shows this season, but they are still in the process of acquiring rights to the properties. “It’s likely we’ll do another party in the park,” said Anderson. “Although it will be a little smaller. We’re thinking we’ll do it at the theatre this year instead of in the football field.” She said that will allow them to have a few more amenities with the concession, and they will be able to barbecue their own food for guests. Anderson said they are also hoping to undertake a couple of other projects, but until they secure the necessary funding, she didn’t wish to divulge too much information. The theatre will continue its summer camp programming for youth between six and 16 years old. Anderson added that, moving the matinees to Thursday will give the camp participants an opportunity to attend a show as part of the camp. The mid-week matinee was also included to provide a chance for some groups in the community to attend Frehlick Hall. Some places like seniors homes don’t have the staff available to facilitate a trip to the theatre on weekends, so a move to the middle of the week will help accommodate them. Tickets will be available online for the first show, beginning April 15.

Focus on our similarities not differences It’s refreshing every now and then to be reminded of how alike we all are. The latest reminder for me came while watching the remake and re-imagining of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, which some of you may also be taking in. The redoing of the show that seeks to explain some of the greatest scientific theories in history to us common folk of lesser minds puts our existence into a stark and sobering perspective. New host Neil deGrasse Tyson reminds us that we’re all made of “star stuff,” borrowing Sagan’s phrase, as are dogs, beetles and trees, all of which have common DNA strands that we all share. The past week’s episode dealing with how our evolution connects us to everything else we know in the world and beyond it was a powerful reminder of not only where we come from but also how much we rely on the delicate balances of nature. It shows how much we rely on everything and everyone around us working in harmony. It’s a warm and comforting feeling to know we’re all connected as part of an immense whole, an entity greater than the sum of its parts. It’s an overdone cliché, but i’s just plain true that just like that Jack Johnson song, we’re better together. No matter how many differences we find in one another, whether we’re liberals

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers or conservatives, atheists or devout followers, black or white, we have far more in common with one another than we have differences. When we pause to reflect on our similarities, we can accomplish great things despite those differences too many of us consider to be the factors that define who we are and who everyone else is. Take the Warm Welcome program in Estevan as a great example of treating all people with respect and as equals. The homeless shelter prides itself on making no judgments on the people who come through the doors to take advantage of the warm beds over the course of a cold winter. The Salvation Army’s Brian Bobolo, who has become the public face of the shelter, always talks about providing dignity for people who have no other place to stay. That’s what everybody wants and needs, and if we see ourselves in the most vulnerable people in our communities, it’s an obvious thing to provide help to those

who may not be able to help themselves. If we are all star stuff, then we all share the same dreams and desires for our families and ourselves. In many ways we’re all family so it’s on us to treat each other as such. Even in grammar we realize how similar we are. An old teacher would often talk about the “tall, blonde, Swedish man,” referring to how we order our adjectives. That order is just right. It just works for all English speakers without there being any hard and fast rules to determine that order. It’s something we all know is right, and we share that with everyone else who speaks our language no matter our politics, religion or race. When we come to accept everything that we share, it’s so easy to make decisions that do more than just benefit ourselves. When we connect ourselves to everything in the past and realize we’re connected to everything yet to come, the only thing we can do is make great decisions as communities. Whether its environmental stewardship, caring for the impoverished or just treating everyone with the good manners we have been polishing since childhood, accepting our togetherness and shrugging at our differences make a better world for everyone.

Farmers continue search for 100-bushel wheat crop If there is a Holy Grail for Canadian Prairie farmers, it is probably the 100-bushel wheat crop. There have been rumours of such a thing, although most are a bit like Sasquatch and Loch Ness Monster sightings, a grainy snapshot as much mirage as reality. All right, there have likely been a few crops that might have hit the lofty yield, but in reality so many factors must fall into place that widespread yields of 100 bushel wheat is frankly little more than a dream, at least at this time. I say “this time,” recognizing plant breeders have done some amazing things over the years, and they likely hold the key to widespread big bushel crops. New varieties offer several potential advancements, which could push yields generally higher. Whether through wheat selection or the introduction of genes from other crops through manipulation, there is every likelihood new varieties will offer greater disease resistance to in-field infections, which hurt yields. We no longer think about it, but wheat

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist resistant to rust was one of the great steps forward in terms of wheat breeding and really allowed wheat to become the cornerstone of Prairie agriculture for decades. New varieties will also offer inherent insect resistance and the ability to fight weeds with a broader ranger of chemicals than is currently feasible. Add in some general yield boost via new varieties, and plant breeding becomes critical into the future, something that at times seems lost in a world of cost cutting. Plant breeding programs are perhaps as critical to the farm future as they have ever been, as farmers face more extreme weather patterns, emerging new disease and insect pressures, and changing soil profiles. Plant breeders will need to be well-funded to keep

CHECK

MArch 21, 2014

pace with the changing pressures a crop faces in a Prairie field. But even with the most modern varieties the really big yields come down to a combination of wise planning and a good share of common luck. Producers need to plant wheat in the right fields, ones where they know disease and wheat pressures can be controlled. Seeding rates and even the time of planting play a role in the final yields, too. And then of course Mother Nature always holds the trump in terms of yield. The timing of spring thaw, the last killing frost of spring and first one in fall, the heat units from the sun, and, of course, the timeliness of rains all impact yields as much, if not more, than the best agronomic efforts of farmers or the best varieties coming from plant breeders. So while farmers and plant breeders should chase the elusive 100-bushel wheat crop — a growing world population demands such efforts — under dry land conditions on the Canadian Prairies it is likely to remain a crop of myth and legend for most.

Inuit youth protest EU seal ban on Parliament Hill National OTTAWA - Inuit youth clad in traditional sealskin garb used Parliament Hill as a catwalk Tuesday for a fashion show to protest the World Trade Organization’s recent decision to uphold a European Union ban on imported seal products.

Students strutted to the beat of techno music before a gathered crowd of about 100 people, twisting like runway models to show off their authentic sealskin jackets with elaborate fur trim. “We’re very much in favour of hunting seal,” said Terrie Kusugak, a student

from Rankin Inlet who helped lead the rally. “They have slaughterhouses full of cows, pigs and chickens. But it’s not OK for us to hunt our seal traditionally, which is why we feel this cultural prejudice: they’re allowed to slaughter their animals and we’re not allowed to

harvest ours?” Canada’s National Inuit organization, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, as well as students from the Ottawa-based Nunavut Sivuniksavut training program organized the rally. It came on the heels of recent efforts by Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq,

herself an Inuk, to appeal the landmark decision by the WTO, which she said was wrong to cite moral grounds in its ruling late last year. Aglukkaq wants the ruling struck down because it unfairly discriminates against Canadian seal hunters while allowing the EU to ban products from any type of business that involves the killing of animals, including the beef and poultry industries. On Tuesday, several of the protesters on hand for the Parliament Hill event carried signs with a photo of two Inuit hugging a calf with the words, “Save the Baby Veal, Avoid Cultural Prejudice.” Seal hunts are a timehonoured Inuit tradition that involve a vital food source

in an Arctic ecosystem with little arable soil for crops, Kusugak said. International PARIS - More than 60 Greenpeace activists have occupied a nuclear plant in eastern France to protest the nation’s reliance on atomic power. Activisits hung a banner reading “Stop Risking Europe” next to one of the reactors at the Fessenheim nuclear power plant. In a statement Tuesday Greenpeace France said the activists had come from 14 countries across Europe “to denounce the risk to Europe from France’s nuclear power,” and to promote a transition to other energy sources. This protest comes a month after Greenpeace dumped a truckload of coal at the doorstep of France’s presidential palace. The group wants European countries to commit to raising their percentage of renewable energy use to 45 per cent by 2030. Police were in the process of arresting the activists Tuesday morning.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2014

Canadian women among finalists for NCAA award National TORONTO - Canada’s Brian McKeever added three more gold medals to his impressive Paralympic medal collection and he might not be done yet. The visually impaired cross-country ski star was victorious in the one-kilometre sprint, 10K and 20K races this month in Sochi. That made it 13 career Paralympic podium appearances since his debut back in 2002 at Salt Lake. McKeever could be game to give it another go in 2018 but for now, he’s going to enjoy his latest accomplishments and make the call on his future Paralympic plans down the road. “You sit there and plan for four years for one event and once it’s over then you need a bit of decompression time,” he said Monday. “So that’s what we’re going to take now before we make any big decisions. But as an athlete

you generally live in four-year chunks. For me, I don’t think I’ll continue for one year without going for four.” The veteran skier from Canmore, Alta., will be 38 when the next Paralympic Winter Games are held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. *** The paths of hockey players Jamie Lee Rattray and Jillian Saulnier keep crossing. Ottawa’s Rattray and Saulnier of Halifax are among three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is given annually to the top female in NCAA Division 1 hockey. Hannah Brandt of Vadnais Heights, Minn., is the other finalist for the trophy which will be handed out Saturday during the women’s Frozen Four tournament in Hamden, Conn. Rattray, a senior at Clarkson University, and Saulnier, a junior at Cornell, were teammates on the Cana-

dian women’s under-18 hockey team in both 2009 and 2010, followed by three years together on the national under-22 squad. The two forwards won silver in 2009 and gold in 2010 at the world under-18 championships. “We’ve been travelling the same road for a long time now,” Saulnier said. “We’re really, really close. “It’s an honour, especially being there with one of my best friends from the national program, it’s even nicer to see that. I’m excited for her as well.” The award was established in 1998 in memory of Kazmaier, a Princeton defenceman who died of a blood disease at the age of 28. Brandt, a sophomore at the University of Minnesota, led Division 1 scoring with 22 goals and 41 assists for 63 points in 39 games. Rattray, 21, was second with 62 points — 28 goals and 34 assists in 39 games.
