Last year’s Relay for Life survivors pose for a photo outside the mini relay prior to the 2013 event.

Race to Relay begins with chair announcement

The journey toward the Relay for Life in Estevan has begun as the committee announced their 2014 chairperson last week. Elva Iwanchuk is taking on the role of chair as she gets involved in the Estevan relay for the first time, though she isn’t new to the Relay for Life spirit. New to the Energy City, Iwanchuk was involved in the relay in Swan River for the past few years and was encouraged to get involved in the local effort by Tina Bird, the communications and marketing director, for the upcoming event. They first got to know each other through the local Lions Club. Iwanchuk acted as chair of the relay in Swan River for four years, after she first attended a Relay for Life event because her sister in Roblin, Man. had been diagnosed with cancer. She attended the event in Roblin in support of her sister. “The year that I did go to Roblin, where she lived, it rained from the moment I got to Roblin. I helped get them set up. All night it just poured rain. I still went home with the inclination to start the relay up in Swan,” Iwanchuk said of her first

experience and how it motivated her to continue. “I’m not sorry about what I got involved in.” In Swan River, the group held events like the pancake breakfast to launch the relay campaign. She said different things come up each year to help the participating teams pass the time during the event. “You try to keep everybody entertained for 12 hours,” Iwanchuk said. “I’ve enjoyed it. It’s for a good cause.” Coming to Estevan in September, she wanted to be part of the team and got involved with the committee. Not everybody wants to step forward to take on the chair’s responsibilities, so she found herself volunteering for the role. “It’s not as hard, none of the committees are. To me they aren’t as hard as they make them out to be. We have the same problem in Swan trying to get committee members. But everybody did what had to be done,” she added. “It’s nice when you can get other people involved.” The Estevan Relay for Life campaign will launch on March 29 at the Estevan

Shoppers Mall. Throughout May, the committee will be hosting events each weekend to rally support and encourage the community to take part in the relay. The main event is slated for June 7 to 8. Iwanchuk noted she is still interested in holding the event outside because of how much the atmosphere changes and how much people just prefer to be outdoors. “We started with 28 or 30 teams (in Swan River), but the weather was always bad, so we moved it inside the arena. A lot of the feedback came that it was hard to walk on the cement for 12 hours,” she said, noting they were arranging to hold the event indoors rain or shine. Iwanchuk said the committee isn’t looking at hosting the event outside this year, though she likes the atmosphere and spirit of the relay as an outdoor event. “It’s good to have it outside. That’s where it was meant to be, and have it as a backup plan to move it inside if the weather is severe. That first year it was cold, and it started to rain and colder in the night, but you know what, we had people out on the track walking with blan-

kets around them and they seemed to enjoy that better.” She said the numbers have dwindled of late in Swan River, and noted they saw their numbers decrease at least partly by the move to inside the arena. Locally, the Relay for Life has also seen a decline in teams and donations, and she said it’s possible moving inside could have been negatively impacting the Estevan events. The local group raised just over $60,000 last year for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Reading is more than a pleasant pastime, but that’s changing. It’s growing colder as it becomes more efficient and robotic, no longer the thing you do with your feet up on the back porch, basking in the sun. Canadians only read five hours and 48 minutes each week on average. That’s six minutes more each week than Americans but four hours less than Indians. They love to read in India. Canadians sit at about 20th compared with the international community in reading each week. There was a lot of worry a few years ago when the next generation, my generation, was reading only about 10 minutes a day. After realizing that dystopian statistic, the world of reading began to change to make reading suit those brief times. Sure, you might just read for 10 minutes but by golly, the publishing world is determined to make sure everyone gets the most out of that snippet of time. Reading, after staying pretty much the same for thousands of years, is quickly catching up to our speedy culture. It’s modernizing and growing trendy in order to not only attract greater reading but more efficient reading so we can consume our literature at an ever-increasing rate. I was slow to start reading with my phone, but now I do it all the time. Rather

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers than toying with a silly app in my brief moments of down time, it’s easy to open up a book on my phone and read a couple of pages. It’s not the same as curling up in a comfortable spot on the couch or in a chair outside in the summer and falling deeply under a novel’s spell for hours, but it’s reading and reading is awesome. Phones and tablets aren’t the only things changing the way we read. Maybe you heard about Spritz recently, which is an app for your device that claims it will get you reading at between 500 and 1,000 words per minute. (As a very careful reader thanks to my time as a proofreader, I read at barely over the 200-word average, handling about 235 words per minute, though I’m sure my comprehension rate is through the roof.) Spritz is a program that shows you just one word at a time, and allows you to set how fast the words change. The idea is that if we read a normal page our eyes have to do a bunch of pointless moving around and that slows us down. The future of reading

is about nothing less than cold, heartless efficiency. The program is advertised with terms like “rapid serial visual presentation” and “optimal recognition point.” Spritz makes no bones about how they plan to take over the world of reading. On their website they declare their plans to have 15 per cent of all reading happening through their program by 2016. I don’t want to toss this concept aside without giving it a test run, but I don’t know if it’s for me. I’m a picky reader, I guess. I tried the audiobook and found myself unable to focus and follow along. My comprehension was zero. I wonder with Spritz whether people will just be working to keep up with the speed of the text or if, with time, they will truly be soaking up every last letter of prose written by the greats. The introduction of e-readers has been a boon to the publishing world and in many ways has personally changed our relationships with novels for the better. A study in 2010 suggested e-reader owners were buying more than three times as many books as they bought prior to owning the device. People everywhere are trying to make reading sexy, and while I may not need the glitz and the glam to get my nose in a book, many others do. That’s not bad. If it gets people reading, it’s great.

Lots of issues at play for grain exports If there is one issue weighing heavily on Prairie farmers this winter, even more than the unseasonably cold weather, it is the inability of the rail system to deal with a record harvest of grain to port for export. The situation is one where most farmers, and even governments, are pointing fingers at the rail companies. But as is the case in most things, that is an over simplification in terms of assigning blame. The federal government should stand up and take its share. There are supposed to be rules set into the regulatory system surrounding rail service, which should be sufficient to have the rail companies doing a better job of things. But federal regulation over the years has been largely lip service to farmers, with the government having little appetite to reprimand the big two rail lines. The result is that the government has become basically a toothless watchdog. But I am not sure that any amount of government influence might have been imparted on the situation. Farmers have to

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist recognize the system is under what has to be thought of as extraordinary pressures. While recognizing many will disagree with this, I might suggest the system is suffering this crop year from having to adjust away from the single-desk selling system of the former Canadian Wheat Board. Whether you viewed the CWB as deeply flawed, or a lost benefit, it did offer some order in terms of grain deliveries, sales and the transportation needed to connect the two. And then, while the rail companies must take the bulk of the blame, as it is apparent they long ago decided there was greater profit in handling commodities other than grain, it might be unfair to expect them to smoothly handle what is a

record crop. I am reminded that on July 1, 2010, a storm hit Saskatchewan that caused significant flooding in many areas. Yorkton was hit with what officials termed a onein-100-year storm event. It caused millions in damages, closing many businesses and destroying several homes. After the crisis the local government assessed the drainage system in Yorkton and found it lacking. They have since invested significant dollars in new storm water retention ponds and ditching, to better safeguard the city against deluges of rain. But even with the improved system the system is not designed to handle a one-in10-year storm. And the rail system is never going to be designed to completely handle a recordsetting crop. To have such capacity would mean most years there would be poorly utilized equipment in average crop years. Certainly the rail system should be doing better than it is, but to point the finger of blame in this case is not to point at a singular target.

CBSA wants former hospital CEO declared inadmissible National VICTORIA - Canadian navy ship HMCS Protecteur was about 400 kilometres northeast of Pearl Harbor on Monday afternoon after towing operations resumed for the aging vessel, which was damaged in a fire. The navy said in a news release that weather conditions had improved in the Pacific Ocean since Sunday, when a tow line broke, and that damaged vessel was now being towed toward Hawaii at a speed of about nine kilometres per hour. Protecteur endured an engine-room fire last Thursday that caused minor injuries to 20 sailors who were attempting to douse the flames. “It is anticipated that USS Michael Murphy, which has been providing assistance to Protecteur up to this point, is expected to detach from the scene and proceed back to Pearl Harbor with family members and

civilians.” Nearly 300 people were on the vessel, including 17 family members who were allowed to join the crew on its return leg to Esquimalt, B.C., a common practice after a long mission. They are between 14 and 73 years old. “We remain in close contact with HMCS Protecteur and continue to provide the required support to the crew onboard as well as the family members,” the navy said. “Family members in Canada continue to receive daily briefings by senior staff through the Military Family Resource Centre.” *** VANCOUVER - A former hospital CEO wanted in the United States for bilking the medicaid system out of tens of millions of dollars should be declared inadmissible to Canada and sent back to face trial, say immigration officials.

to the public. He’s a guy in his 60s, with no criminal record, accused of committing perjury, correct?” “Yes, based on the documents,” Vasilekas replied. The board heard that a report had already been prepared on Rogan and authorities knew he was arriving on that flight. A few days prior, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed a grand jury indictment against Rogan alleging obstruction of justice and perjury. Rogan came to Vancouver in 2006 and applied for permanent residency. That same year, the U.S. Government won a $64-million judgment against him related to fraudulent claims for health-care services. Canadian immigration officials are arguing that Rogan is criminally inadmissible to Canada.

Peter G. Rogan, the disgraced former owner of Edgewater Hospital in Chicago, appeared before an Immigration and Refugee Board adjudicator in Vancouver on Monday. Rogan was detained by Canada Border Services Agency on May 26, 2008, at Vancouver’s airport as he returned from a business trip to China. Joanna Vasilekas, the Canadian border agent, seized his passport and ordered him detained because he posed a flight risk. “One of the things to consider that would be in line with that allegation, would be to basically prevent Canada from being used as a safe haven by persons who are facing criminal proceedings in another country,” Vasilekas told the hearing. Tamara Duncan, Rogan’s lawyer, questioned why he was order detained. “There’s no evidence that he’s a danger

Security cost at Pan Am Games could go higher National TORONTO - Ontario’s Liberal government admitted Tuesday that the original $113-million security tab for Toronto’s 2015 Pan Am Games was just a “place holder”

number, and warned the latest estimate of $239 million could go higher. The Toronto 2015 Pan Am organizing committee came up with the figure because they had to put something in the bid book that helped secure the international event for the city, said Tourism Minister Michael Chan. “The $113 million was presented a long time ago, in 2010, and it was a place holder because security has to be there,” said Chan. “You probably will appreciate TO2015 doesn’t have the skills, they don’t have the expertise, they don’t have any knowledge about security.” Saad Rafi, who took over as the CEO of the TO2015 Pan Am organizing committee after Ian Troop was fired,

said he wasn’t involved when the city’s bid was prepared and couldn’t say where the $113 million estimate came from. Officials wouldn’t have had a good handle on the number of athletes and coaches that would be coming or how many venues would be used and in what communities when they prepared the security estimate for the bid book, added Rafi. “I think a myriad of elements and factors go into generating an estimate of costs,” he said. “If you want a more detailed answer I’m afraid we couldn’t give it because we weren’t there to submit the bid book.” The Opposition demanded Chan resign or be fired after the security bill for next year’s Games more than doubled.

Local Kin members help raise Telemiracle total The 38th annual Kinsmen and Kinette Telemiracle had a particular Estevan flavour this year when 2 local contingent made the trip to Regina. Among the group was Saskatchewan district governor Mark Tribiger, the Estevan resident who is entering the last few months of his term as the district’s head honcho. With him were three local Kinsmen and another 11 Kinettes. At the end of the weekend, the Kin Clubs had received more than $5.2 million in donations. The Telemiracle website notes in the past year there have been 579 applications for funding that have been approved for health-care facilities, and local groups and individuals around the province. In Regina this year, at the Conexus Centre of the Arts, the province’s Kinsmen and Kinettes manned the phones as calls flooded in to help the district reach their mark, just a little shy of their $5.9 million record. Entertainment regulars Bob McGrath, Bev Mahood and Midale’s Brad Johner and his sons made appearances performing at various times throughout the telethon to drum up the donations. Other musical guests included Harlequin, Little Miss Higgins and Chris Brown among others. Speaking to the Mercury on Monday, Tribiger said “It was a good weekend. It was a cold weekend. I don’t know if that helped us or hurt us but we did pretty good.” He noted the group doesn’t set fundraising goals, noting “we get what we can get.” Tribiger noted they always like to have more volunteers for the event, but was pleased with the turnout and how smoothly the event was run. As governor, he didn’t have a direct job in organizing, which is handled by the event chair, Clint Shkuratoff, and event committee, which included Estevan’s Susan Colbow. “He did an amazing job. I couldn’t ask for any more from Clint for doing this,” said the governor. Tribiger was charged with escorting the national Kin

Photo courtesy of Bruce Blom president, who got involved, visiting Telemiracle and manning the phones for a brief time during the event that ran 20 hours from Saturday at 9 p.m. to Sunday at 5 p.m. He also jumped on the phones for about 10 minutes when he wasn’t co-ordinating others to make sure each phone had a warm body and smiling face behind it. “We saw a good showing of the Kinsmen and Kinettes

from across Saskatchewan coming out. We saw some new faces and a lot of old faces. It was nice.” Next year’s Telemiracle will be back in Saskatoon, but Tribiger said he is looking forward to the 40th anniversary of Telemiracle, which will be hosted in Regina. “Thank you to everyone who gave. It’s only another 363 days until we do it again,” he added.

One small step for a man, one giant splash for mankind. Newspaper carrier Curtis Fortowsky tests the waters of a muddy “lake” created by the warm weather in front of the Beefeater Inn last week.
