THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2012

Cheers to a great opening weekend for baseball. It was great weather and it’s great to see the minor teams back on the diamonds.

Jeers to the contractors that left us without a driveway for more than three weeks. How long does it take to pour a driveway?

Cheers to the lady in line in front of me who bought my coffee. That was a nice surprise!

Jeers to the number of gravel trucks on the highway between Bienfait and Estevan. Goodbye to ever having a windshield again!

Cheers to the repairs that were done to the train tracks on Kensington.

Jeers to the young men we found outside our home on Sunday night, helping themselves to items in our flower bed! Pleasantdale residents be warned. Parents wake up and make sure your children are in their beds! Two thirty on a Monday morning is no time to be running around the neighborhood.

Cheers to the beautiful sunny weather we’ve had recently. Cheers to the people using the green space at Royal Heights park! Cheers to the new walking paths along Souris Avenue. They were much needed.

Jeers to the disrespectful individuals who vandalized working equipment and freshly paved curbs! Tires were slashed on the packer located in a construction area on Souris Avenue. Hopefully the vandals are discovered and if they cannot pay for the damages they should work it off with hard labour!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might have to turn your Arian charm up a few degrees if you hope to persuade that persistent pessimist to see the possibilities in your project. Whatever you do, don’t give up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A “tip” about a coworker’s “betrayal” might well raise the Bovine’s rage levels. But before charging into a confrontation, let an unbiased colleague do some fact checking. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a relationship still seems to be moving too slowly to suit your expectations, it’s best not to push it. Let it develop at its own pace. You’ll soon get news about a workplace change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A continually changing personal situation makes you feel as if you’re riding an emotional roller coaster. But hold on tight; stability starts to set in early next week. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Believe it or not, someone might dare to say “No!” to the Regal One’s suggestion. But instead of being miffed, use this rebuff to recheck the proposition and, perhaps, make some changes.

DARK SHADOWS

My name is Honey. My brother and I were found in a ditch left to die. A kind family stopped and took us to their house. They bathed us and took off about 35 ticks. The next day they brought us to the Humane Society, where we are doing fine. We are about 6 weeks old and one day we will be big dogs.

Friday, May 18 Thursday, May 24 Hi, I’m Bear, Honey’s brother.

My name is Annie. I have been here for a long time. I have had kittens here and now I have been spayed and I have all my vaccinations. I am a very pretty girl and I can be talkative at times. I love treats! My name is Keiko. I am a white and black male about one years old. I am a cutie

Did you know that just two uncontrolled breeding cats plus their kittens and all their kittens’ kittens (if none are ever spayed or neutered) in a 10 year breeding life can multiply to 80,399,780 unwanted cats! The solution is easy SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PET!! The Estevan Humane Society reserves the right to refuse any adoption.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might find it difficult to make a decision about a family matter. But delay can only lead to more problems. Seek out trusted counsel and then make that important decision. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Concentrate your focus on what needs to be done, and avoid frittering away your energies on less-important pursuits. There’ll be time later for fun and games. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although the conflicts seem to be letting up, you still need to be wary of being drawn into workplace intrigues. Plan a special weekend event for family and/or friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your quick wit helps you work through an already difficult situation without creating more problems. Creative aspects begin to dominate by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be patient. You’ll soon receive news about a project that means so much to you. Meanwhile, you might want to reconsider a suggestion you previously turned down. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There are still some aspects about that new job offer you need to resolve. In the meantime, another possibility seems promising. Be sure to check that out as well. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Opening up your emotional floodgates could leave you vulnerable to being hurt later on. Watch what you say, in order to avoid having your words come back to haunt you. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re usually the life of the party, which gets you on everyone’s invitation list. You also have a flair for politics. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Competition natural for Midale girl and her dog Rebecca McDiarmid and her dog Keyley are agile. The pair is on the way to the regional competition for agility, a sport in which the owner verbally and with hand gestures leads their dog through an obstacle course with the fastest time deciding exactly who the top dog is. The 13-year-old from Midale explains it as “a competitive sport for both the handler and the dog. You train them to go through obstacles and follow commands.” There are about 18 obstacles in each course, and a run often takes between 35 and 60 seconds depending on the course. Faults occur when a dog gets too close to an obstacle or wrong jump, as is straying from the path or knocking down a bar. A fault disqualifies the dog and owner from the run. When it’s time for the competition, Rebecca said Keyley definitely knows it’s time to perform. “She definitely knows it’s a competition. Usually I have to give her a good walk or else she’ll run around a whole course. She kind of does her own thing, but I try to get a little more focused. She handles it quite well though.” At her first regionals, Rebecca and Keyley, a miniature poodle, will be vying for a spot in the national competition. The regionals, which covers Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut, are May 26 and 27 at the Golden Mile Arena in Moose Jaw. Almost 100 dogs will compete at regionals, with 76 handlers, and about 30 move on to the national competition, which is in Nanaimo this August. The regional competition includes two jumper courses, two standard and gamble courses. Rebecca got into the sport when they decided to take a couple of classes with

Keyley, Rebecca McDiarmid’s miniature poodle, leaps an obstacle during an agility competition. a man near Weyburn. She then decided to continue, going to classes with her grandma and her dog. “I really like spending time with (Keyley). It’s one of those sports that’s just a lot of fun. It’s kind of like a big family at agility, so you know everyone and they know you. She enjoys it a lot.” Shortly after beginning to train they started going to competitions in places like Saskatoon and Moose Jaw. She’s now been part of agility for going on three years and competing for two. They started when Keyley was 15 months old. “You kind of get hooked and can’t really stop,” said Rebecca about falling into the agility world. It starts with puppy classes so that owners can train their dogs to go

through obstacles. Rebecca’s mother, Kyla, noted the family, who have two other dogs, have been building a practice facility at home as well, so Rebecca and Keyley can practise whenever they please. “You train them to obstacles so when you say ‘tunnel’ they go to a tunnel or ‘weave pulls’ so they go to weave pulls. So you kind of train them to go to the obstacles you want with words. After puppy classes, you work more with them focusing on your commands and your body adjusters. It’s more for you than the dog after that.” Rebecca said Keyley has taken to the sport very well, shouldering most of the blame for the faults the pair accrues at the competitions. They now train about one and a half hours each week in Moose Jaw at

the Band City Kennel and Obedience Club. They train in groups of between eight and 10 dogs. Kyla explained it can be a precise art, showing your dog where to go next. “The dog will even watch your feet to see which way they’re pointing,” said Kyla. “Sometimes it’s as simple as if you turn your feet the dog will go where you want.” The little things were easy enough to learn, said Rebecca, but putting it together came only with time. “It was hard at first, but then you kind of catch on,” she added. “You just keep learning things. You never really can stop learning things in agility. They’re always adding on. People will come along and tell you ‘try this,’ and you’ll do that and it’ll make your dog learn new things.”

Perspective

Fat taxes are all about an attitude change Higher taxes on unhealthy foods, known as fat taxes, aren’t such a bad idea. It wouldn’t be the first time the government has taxed something that has been deemed unhealthy, so this isn’t a radical plan. This goes back to a health-care system that we all pay into with taxes. If the people are paying for health, then there is some onus on each individual to take care of their bodies as best they can so as not to overburden our health system. Outlawing foods deemed unsuitable is certainly a step too far, but requiring people to pay a little extra for something that’s bad for them is almost necessary. I like my taxes going to things like helping sick people, but I also don’t have a problem with people who are in and out of medical care for reasons like a poor diet paying more tax. Ideally the revenues raised would be going to health care, for both medical and preventative initiatives. Instilling this fat tax is not a catch-all solution to countering unhealthy food, and it really has nothing to do with fat, or at least not fat exclusively. Food that is highly processed or ripe with refined sugar would

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers be taxable, as would fast food. Believe it if you want, but there are a number of people, like doctors and nutritionists and my sister included, who say that this generation of people is going to be the first since the Dark Ages to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. I’m not sure if it’s my generation they’re talking about or if another generation has already started, but it doesn’t give the kids nowadays much of a chance. I’m also not the pristine example of healthy eating, but I certainly limit fastfood intake, add salt to absolutely nothing and just don’t have a sweet tooth. I’ve never cared for sugary treats and remember reading a story about how a mother’s diet, when a child is still in the womb, can have a pretty big impact on that child’s future

tastes. I guess I have my mom to thank for my apathetic attitude towards sugar. There is really nothing wrong with discouraging people from making unhealthy choices. It’s been happening with cigarettes for years. Smoking’s not the biggest health concern we have anymore. Unhealthy people in general are now our greatest health problem. It’s not just smokers and alcoholics and drug addicts. So much of the food we eat is terrible for us, and we just don’t know what goes into our food. For the most part, the produce we buy is acceptable, unless you have something against pesticides and genetic modification, so even our “natural” foods have some people raising alarms. There’s an attitude change that needs to take place with how we look at food. My grandparents grew up in a different time, but I have always been around food that is pumped with chemicals. If one way to spark that culture shift is to introduce this fat tax, maybe we’ll all be better for it, even if buying some of our guilty-pleasure foods hurts our wallets just a little bit.

Sustaining ecosystems, a task not to be overlooked The idea of agriculture needing to be responsible to nature is hardly a new concept. It’s one that has been a theme in this space before, and for the most part is something farmers are aware of, even if the need to achieve some level of profitability makes it hard to see it from the side of the road. Farmers have determined profits only come from productive acres, and so bluffs and sloughs that are idle in terms of production are often the target of the dozer blade and plow. Even hedgerows and shelterbelts planted by an earlier generation to slow winds are being torn out because their usefulness has become somewhat obsolete. A shelterbelt had two primary purposes when planted. First, it slowed wind and thus lessened the impact of soil erosion on a field; and second, it often acted as a snow fence to help protect grid roads from winter drifting. Erosion is less of an issue now since farmers have almost all converted to at least minimum tillage systems, and most employ zero-tillage that leaves sufficient trash cover to deal with wind. Roads are built higher, and grading equipment much better today than a half

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist century ago, so the need to have a snow fence is also gone. So farmers have knocked down a lot of trees and drained a lot of wetlands in recent years and while it is understandable from an economics point of view, it remains unfortunate. Nature is something that is amazing when you take the time to just sit back and enjoy what it has to offer. Often in our busy world, jobs seem to demand our attention almost constantly, as do families, and volunteer efforts. Our cellphones and laptops seem to be a tether to an electronic world, so connecting to nature is sometimes something which gets lost in the hustle and bustle that swirls around us. In my case, I have been lucky the last couple of weeks. Having a few days off, I made good use of them by taking the opportunity to get in some fishing. The first jaunt was to Cutarm Creek,

south of Churchbridge. The fishing spot is great, and not just because of the hungry perch. You can’t go wrong on a warm May evening, watching ducks landing and taking off from the water, or hearing a pair of Canada geese as they fly low overhead, or seeing a muskrat out for a swim, or a whitetail in the grass. Such sights have a way of making you realize Twitter and Facebook and the World Wide Web are not everything - that we don’t have to watch National Hockey League playoffs in May - and that we really are not indentured to our jobs. It was more of the same on Mother’s Day at the Canora Dam. I saw more fish jump, even if they were mostly suckers, than I ever have before, and I am now 52. It is a day I will never forget, as the water swirled in a foamy torrent, and the fish jumped, and oh yes, I limited out on pike and pickerel which helped too. But the full stringer notwithstanding, a day close to nature beats a lot of things we do in our lives and we all - farmers and non-farmers - need to do what we can to sustain what is an ever dwindling natural world if we want our grandchildren and generations beyond that to experience the joy of a simple day with nature

Helping Their Own Cause

Many of the Creighton Lodge residents found their way to the lounge in the local seniors’ complex to display a cheque in the amount of $1,800, which represented profits from their recent craft and bake sale. The money was turned over to the lodge’s administration committee that is raising funds to expand the lounge area in the lodge, eventually making it nearly twice its current size.

Make it stop I’ve been thinking about all the things I’d like to cut out of my life, in order to make it less stressful and just more enjoyable all around. Obviously if I really simplified things, I’d cut out everything except for eating and sleeping and continue my life in the perfect balance of the two things I love the most. However, I think I’d eventually start to miss brutal traffic and dry-eyes, so I’ve settled on the most annoying issues that plague me. They need to be axed. 1) No more hair drying. If I had my way, I’d never dry my hair ever, ever again. And in the absence of my hot styling tools, my hair would actually look healthier and straighter and just better in general. This is my first demand. 2) No more exercise for fitness. If I want to exercise, I want to do it for fun and I want the results to be total toning. Sports, casual yoga classes with friends, shopping; these are all exercises

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me I can really get behind. Anything further should be unnecessary. 3) No more washing dishes. Dishes should become recyclable or something, so I could toss them in a blue bin when they’re dirty and have them carted away, only to be replaced by new clean ones. Never again would dishes need to pile up on my kitchen counters. 4) No more problems involving phones. All phone calls will be pleasant. All phone calls will be promptly returned. All conversations will be concise and easily understood. I will not grow a stomach ulcer as a result of these phone calls. 5) No more slices or snap hooks in my golf game. I want all shots to be predictable and awesome. 6) No more cavities. Plain and simple.

U-

7) No more laundry. Like dishes, laundry should be easily and inexpensively replaced with no damage to the environment. 8) No more come backs. When I snap with a clever, well-thought out zinger of an insult, no one should be able to offer a response that is equally clever. I’m not sure what I’d offer in exchange for all my wishes to be granted. But if someone approached me and agreed to make all or some of my problems disappear, I’d be willing to bargain — especially that hair drying one. That needs to be solved pronto. Tonaya Marr realizes that she is being extremely whiny. Her problems are all minor, except for that potential ulcer. She should really see a doctor, or at least visit WedMD.com. If you have a solution to Tonaya’s everyday issues, send her an e-mail at tonaya.marr@ gmail.com or tweet her @ Tonaya Marr.

Looking at how we feel about home The latest exhibit at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum shows off the aspects of a home that give it meaning beyond the building’s physical structure. Melanie Hiske was all smiles, unable to hold her excitement, when the exhibit, dwelling, opened at the art gallery last week, featuring some of her photography along with other artists’ work. The exhibit includes seven artists from Saskatchewan and Ontario and is Natalie Buongiorno’s final assignment during her stay at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum. She spent the last two semesters as the gallery’s assistant-curator intern and is now back in Ontario, the province she calls home. She said the inspiration for the exhibit came after her move from Toronto to Estevan, trying to make a new city home. “It was through my own circumstances that made me question this idea of home and what exactly it was,” said Buongiorno. “Being as I had just relocated to a new city, a new province that was quite different than my own, I thought I would make this show come from a very personal place. Because I was missing home quite a bit

at this time — I had already been in Estevan for three months — I decided that I would explore what it was that makes a home a home.” She began the search for artists, and thought it was prudent to include pieces from both her home province as well as Saskatchewan. She was familiar with the art scene in Toronto and knew some places to begin her search for the exhibit’s artists. It was different discovering local pieces here. That was where Hiske came in. She was recommended to Buongiorno and submitted several pieces for the exhibit. Hiske said, “(Buongiorno) was doing this exhibit called dwelling, which kind of showcases comfortable things at home, and what you know at home, things you know.” After being contacted by Buongiorno, Hiske immediately said she would like to participate in the project and had some say as to what pieces would be included. “I submitted a few more (than what is on display),” said Hiske, “and Natalie picked which ones she wanted to put in here. It’s kind of rare that they ask you, because it’s quite a process to submit your résumé and

pictures, and all that kind of stuff. I think it’s pretty rare for a first-timer to have gotten asked or approached to do it.” Hiske has had pieces juried in competitions before, but this is her first exhibit. The three black-andwhite photographic pieces by Hiske show a coffee cup as well as a rotary dial telephone and a doorknob. She admits the subjects are ordinary but added that she tries to capture those subjects when the lighting is right. “When the light’s right,

I take it. That’s kind of how it works. My thing is taking stuff that I know. I take pictures of stuff that I know. You know, at home, what’s around, and then when the light’s right.” The photo of the coffee cup, with rising steam, was a piece she has submitted to a competition before, so it was ready for display. The other two had to be prepared for the exhibit. “The coffee cup was one that I wanted to do. I had that one in my head. That actually takes place at my sister’s

house. The light was right, and the steam came up, and I grabbed my camera, and it was there. The doorknob, when you’re just looking at something, your eye catches it, but it’s a picture of a doorknob.” Hiske said the experience of having her work alongside other artists has been lots of fun, particularly during the exhibition’s opening night. “It’s amazing. It really, really is. I’m kind of excited,” she understated, beaming from ear to ear. “It’s

kind of cool to see it on a big wall. It’s kind of surreal.” Buongiorno noted the artwork displays ordinariness in the home, as many people find comfort in what they are familiar with. “A lot of the artists in this show share an interest in our emotional connections to home and the fundamental qualities of home that define our lives and reinforce a positive, central place,” she said. “I hope that through this exhibit, homes are seen as more than a physical space, but actually a state of being.”

Are mentally ill people who have committed crimes treated too leniently in Canada?

He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker

This topic has come under some discussion recently after doctors treating Vince Li, the man who decapitated a fellow bus traveller four years ago, recommended him to be permitted supervised community visits. These community visits would be intended as a way to re-integrate Li into society for his eventual release at some later time. Reading through the comment sections, it’s clear a lot of people are against this individual’s release, suggesting things like lynch mobs and locking up his psychiatrists would be more appropriate action. I’m not a doctor, and I have little to no understanding of Li’s condition, schizophrenia, which is said to have gone untreated before he murdered the man on the bus. His doctors say his condition can be controlled with medication and that Li understands the importance of staying on the treatments. I will defer to their judgment on this one. They certainly don’t have an agenda that involves placing a dangerous person into any community. Li wasn’t convicted of murder because of his mental illness, and the whole reason he was placed in the Selkirk Mental Health Centre was so he could be treated and get better, so eventually he could be released back into society as a productive member of the community. It’s the same as with the jail system. We sentence people to jail terms for the purpose of rehabilitation so they can be released. Certainly if Li is released he won’t share the same freedoms of most of us. I would still favour conditions placed on him with regular meetings with his doctors, perhaps even supervision by a family member or friend. I don’t understand mental illnesses, and I doubt many other average citizens do either. I don’t think the incident on the bus was something Li wanted to do, and if he understands that something similar could happen if he goes off his medication, then from hearing what his doctors say about him being aware of the consequences, he wouldn’t.

This is a pretty fuzzy area, because mental illness itself can be a very fuzzy subject. When treated and properly looked after, those with mental illnesses live fruitful, successful lives like anyone without a mental illness. But the unfortunate few who are not treated, who lose their ability to function normally in society, who behead men on Greyhound buses, do these people belong on our streets? I’m going to say probably not, at least in the case of the Greyhound bus killer. Leaders of tomorrow! Vince Li, who violently murdered Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus because he www.4-H.sk.ca thought McLean was a demon, was not criminally charged for his actions because he is mentally ill. He’s looking at being released in as few as five years. 4-H Li, Saskatchewan I can honestly say that I don’t everSupport want to on a bus with whether or not ourride youth! is a non-profit youth the Canadian justice system blames him for beheading an innocent man. www.4-H.sk.ca development program. I read online that his family wants nothing to do with him once he’s free, so who’s going to be around to make sure he stays sane? Will he even be monitored by the government who has kept him isolated since the incident? A pair of month-old great horned owls peer down from their nest in a spruce tree near the Estevan Curling Club. Conservation officers said seeing great horned owls nesting within the city is a novelty, but nothing out of the ordinary. The nest is being watched by conservation officers and police after a report of kids throwing rocks at it. They may be the lowliest of scum, but don’t kill them It’s a typical morning. Katrina announces she doesn’t want to go to school today. I try not to fight with her, as I have a busy morning. She gets dressed, eats her cantaloupe, and fights with her brother over watching Sesame Street or some other kids’ show. Then she dons her jacket and book bag, and walks the three blocks from our house to school. It’s not a far walk - just a couple of minutes each way. But it’s just far enough, with two turns, that the school is out of sight from our home. At the end of the day, she will walk home, and should be opening the door at approximately 3:25 p.m. It was on a walk just like

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile this, in Woodstock, Ont., that Tori Stafford disappeared. That walk now gives me the chills. As a seasoned former court reporter who has covered some pretty brutal crimes, including Kurt Dagenais’ shooting of two Mounties, the Stafford case has, at times, literally kept me up at night. I’m not even covering it, but I can imagine what it must have been like. Every story about it that was printed online has a stock photo of Tori. The similarities between Tori and Katrina

are striking. The same age, blonde hair, big smiles - it’s impossible for me not to equate her to my daughter. It would have been impossible for me to sit in that courtroom with any sort of objectivity. I still remember bawling my eyes out about a case in North Battleford where a guy, spaced out on drugs, picked up his crying infant child by the leg and bashed the child against the wall. At the time, Katrina was a similar age to that infant. Reading all the brutal things Terri-Lynne McClintic and Michael Rafferty did to Tori before finally killing her has been hard. I feel compelled to do so, but there are some things you

cannot unread. You cannot forget. You can’t just wish that mental image away from your mind. All that said, as much as my gut instinct says, “Let them hang,” we should not kill these people. It’s remarkable that with such a brutal crime, covered in such detail, that there has not been an outcry in the media for capital punishment. I have not seen one column, nor heard one pundit, call for the hangman’s noose or a deadly shot in the arm. Certainly many have thought

about it. Unlike some other issues like abortion, where I don’t feel the matter is truly settled with the Canadian public, capital punishment, another form of state-sanctioned killing, is a dead issue. It’s taken a long time to get here - decades, in fact. The final straws were likely the prominent wrongful convictions of Donald Marshall, Jr., David Milgaard, Guy Paul Morin, Romeo Phillion, Thomas Sophonow and Steven Truscott. Truscott was actually sentenced to

death, despite being 14 when he supposedly raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl. If his sentence hadn’t been commuted to life in prison, he would have hung. The public has no appetite for killing someone with the state’s hand, especially if they may have got it wrong. It’s too bad Kingston Penitentiary will be closing soon. It’s cell blocks had more in common with dungeons than modern prisons. That’s where the likes of Rafferty and McClintic belong, slowly rotting away.

It’s a bittersweet occasion for those of us who have worked with and developed friendships with Blair and Earl over the years. They have been an integral part of MNP, as well as the community of Estevan and surrounding area. Like you, we will miss their friendship and support. Blair and Earl wanted to slip out quietly, but we think a ‘Come & Go’ get together will make all of us feel better about their retirement. Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life Today on GetRealLive Radio (the morning talkback radio show I co-host), we kicked off our relationship week with a great conversation. We hosted John and Helen Burns who are relationship experts based in Vancouver. There were a number of great things they shared about how they have managed to keep their marriage not only together and not striving, but rather thriving. Yes, they have walked through some hard situations and there have been moments where they thought about packing it all in; however, they chose to fight and they have recently celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary. (To listen to the show go to getreallive.com and you can listen on demand.) During the conversation, we transitioned into relationships with our children and they shared openly from their experience. They have raised three lovely daughters and are now enjoying many grandchildren. When talking about developing strong, lasting relationships with our children, they shared simple stories about things that they did with their girls. The stories they shared inspired our listeners and me so much so that today immediately after the show, I did something small but significant with one of my children. As a believer of the mixture of quality and quantity time with our children, I decided to put action behind my words and make today count. Following our radio show, I began packing a picnic lunch. With the weather in Calgary being extraordinary and the warmth of the sun finally finding its way here, I thought a picnic was a perfect way to treat my youngest. So with our picnic lunch securely packed, I headed off to school at her lunchtime and surprised her with a quick impromptu picnic. The look on my little girls face said it all. She was excited, felt special, loved and everything in between. She knew that I was thinking of her and that she mattered. So with the news of the picnic, she made her way to the car, skipping all the way. Once in the car the questions began, “Why did you decide to do this?” “Is Dad coming?” “Are Gabriel and Sophia coming?” “Where are we going?” With every question I responded letting her know that this was all about her and that it was only the two of us. Seeing her through the rearview mirror, I was confident this

Small Things Matter was a moment she would remember for a long time. We arrived at the park, I put the blanket out, opened our picnic basket and lunch began. We talked

and laughed, and she told me about her day and asked me about mine. It was divine. Our lunch wasn’t long (she had to be back in time for classes) and it wasn’t

extravagant, but it was impacting, not only for her but for her mother as well. Today I managed and spent my time well. Today I made both quality and

Investigation into small-plane collision underway Provincial ST. BRIEUX, Sask. The search for clues as to what may have caused two planes to fatally collide in mid-air over Saskatchewan is in full swing. Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board arrived in the St. Brieux (BREW) area northeast of Saskatoon on Sunday. Debris from the planes — a Piper PA-28 and a Lake Buccaneer amphibious plane — is scattered over

grassy fields and in trees. Police have not identified the five people who died. But an obituary in a Saskatchewan newspaper says Joy and Eric Jackson of Regina were killed in a light-plane collision on Saturday. Family members have already confirmed that the three people on board the Piper were Denny Loree, Eric Donovan and his 11-year-old son Wade — all from rural Alberta.

National OTTAWA - A prominent group of former soldiers wants the chairman of a veterans review agency be called before a parliamentary committee to explain his expenses. Canadian Veterans Advocacy says John Larlee’s taxpayer-funded trips to attend lectures in Britain, where his wife was a participant, are suspect, especially in light of planned job reductions at Veterans Affairs Canada.

Mike Blais, the organization’s president, says the chairman of the review and appeal board should be fired, if he can’t provide a suitable explanation for attending the Cambridge Lecture series — or describe how it benefited those who are served by the agency. John Larlee has regularly attended the Cambridge Lecture series, but went on the federal government’s dime in 2009 and 2011 at a total cost of $7,285.97.

Barbie doll Q: I have one of the first Barbie dolls issued. I would like to sell it. -- Carol, Albuquerque, N.M. A: As with most collectibles, issue date and condition are absolutely vital in determining the value of Barbie dolls. For example, “mint condition” means the doll has never been out of the original box, the coloring is bright and the hair perfect. It also means, of course, that it features the original wardrobe. quest for a London Olympic berth has suddenly turned into a waiting game. The three-time world champion from Windsor, Ont., was upset 18-11 by Sweden’s Anna Laurell in her first bout in the 75-kilogram division at the women’s world boxing championships Monday. “Anna boxed great,” Spencer said. ‘’I hope she does well in this tournament.” Spencer, one of Canada’s top medal hopefuls in London, now must wait and see if she’s awarded a wild card spot in the Summer Games. International BATON ROUGE, La. - The Louisiana Legislature is asking the NFL to reconsider the penalties imposed on the New Orleans Saints because of its bounty program. The formal request received final legislative passage with a 28-1 Senate vote Monday.

In the resolution, lawmakers say there is “widespread public opinion throughout the state of Louisiana and beyond that the penalties imposed upon the Saints are too harsh and should be reconsidered.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season. General manager Mickey Loomis got an eight-game suspension, assistant coach Joe Vitt received six games and the club was fined $500,000. Two current Saints players and two former Saints players also have been suspended. *** NEW YORK, N.Y. Major League Baseball management has fired Shyam Das, the arbitrator who overturned Ryan Braun’s drug suspension in February. MLB informed Das and the players’ association of its decision last

week. Das had been baseball’s permanent arbitrator since 1999, part of what technically is a three-man panel that also includes a representative of management and labour. “Shyam is the lon-

gest-tenured panel chair in our bargaining relationship,” union head Michael Weiner said. “For 13 years, from the beginning to the end of his tenure, he served the parties with professionalism and dis-

tinction.” Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement says the arbitrator can be removed by the players’ association or management at any time with written notice.

Northern Ireland ready to host open There must be something in the Guinness in Ireland that produces golf champions at an extraordinary rate. Or is it just the luck o’ the Irish? A country with a population of just over six million having four golfers with six major titles to their credit in the last six years is a mathematical and athletic anomaly. But with Padraig Harrington (three majors), Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke (one each), Ireland defies golf gods’ logic. So it would make sense for such a golf-dominant country to at least play host to a major championship one of these years, right? If things fall into place the way Wilma Erskine and others at Royal Portrush Golf Club on the north coast of Ireland are hoping, this summer’s Irish Open (June 28 - July 1) will be a mere dress rehearsal for the Open Championship (known on this side of the Atlantic as the British Open) coming to Northern Ireland four or five years hence. The Open has been held in Northern Ireland only once, 1951 at Portrush. Erskine, secretary manager at Royal Portrush, says the club has “a romantic dream of achieving our goal of playing host” to another Open, perhaps even becoming part of the Open Championship’s course rotation. “The R and A will be looking at us carefully” when the club hosts the Irish Open this year, she said. The Royal and Ancient (R and A), which runs the Open, uses a rotation of nine courses - four in England; five in Scotland. With the recent Irish success in the majors, public pressure in the UK has been exerted to bring the Open west across the Irish Sea. Erskine says if Royal Portrush is fortunate enough to be awarded an Open in the next few years, it will most certainly be ready. “We’ve done a complete renovation of the clubhouse, we have a new practice facility, including a short-game area, we’ve built eight new tees and we’ve lengthened the course to 7,143 yards (from 6,800),” said Erskine in a recent interview. Course irrigation has also been upgraded. “While others were saving (during the recent recession), we were spending,” she said. This year’s Irish Open is guaranteed to be a huge hit, with all four Irish lads with major titles committed to competing, as well as other top names, such as reigning PGA champ Keegan Bradley, an American with strong Irish roots. Watching, and almost

guaranteed to be impressed, will be members of the R and A. • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Hear about the latest Pro Bowl proposal, in which the NFL all-stars play the Cincinnati Bengals? They’d call it the Pro and Con Bowl.” • CBS’s David Letterman, among his top 10 pieces of advice for today’s young athletes: - “Don’t waste your money on fast cars and fast living ... invest in tattoos. - “Talk to friends, family and clergy about which Kardashian is right for you.” • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Six Cubs fans are walking 1,600 miles accompanied by a goat named Wrigley to help end the club’s 104-year curse.

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist

Yeah, I would think either that or better pitching would be the answer.” • R.J Currie of sportsdeke.com: “ The U.S. town of Boring (Ore.) just signed a sister-city agreement with the British village of Dull. For good measure, they threw in the Chicago Cubs as a sister team.” • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, on Yankees closer Mariano Rivera blowing out his ACL shagging fly balls during

Diamond Clean Up

A group of volunteers from the adult slo-pitch league took some time last Saturday morning to clean up one of the diamonds in Woodlawn Park. After cleaning up the infield, the group burned most of the excess debris that was lying around after being flooded out last out.

batting practice: “If this is it for Rivera, it will be the worst ending to greatness since the final episode of ‘Seinfeld.’ “ • Cote again: “In summary, I would call the first month of the Marlins’ season a rousing success, other than the Muhammad Ali opening day calamity, the Fidel Castro crisis, the lack of hitting that sent the team spiraling to the NL East cellar, and the fact the new ballpark roof leaks and

the outfield grass is dying.” • R.J. Currie again: “Reuters reports a British man spent five years building a high-performance vehicle from scratch - despite being blind. So what’s Leafs GM Brian Burke’s excuse?” • Headline at Sportspickle.com: “Classy Josh Hamilton dedicates 4 HRs to the memory of Albert Pujols.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) WorldHerald, on the unlikely friendship of golfer Bubba Watson and singer Justin Bieber: “I’m not sure where Watson and Bieber met, but we can pretty much rule out a barber shop.” • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “When an NBA player gets fouled, or comes close to

being fouled, he takes it like a man. Unfortunately, that man is Rudolph Valentino, superstar of silent movies whose dramatic overacting was necessary to compensate for the absence of dialogue.” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com, on ESPN excitement when Tiger Woods makes the cut, guaranteeing his presence on the weekend: “Wow! So finishing is now a goal? Woods has gone from Jack Nicklaus to Danica Patrick.” • Bumper sticker, as spotted by blogger Michael Higgins: “Always give 100%, except when donating blood.” Care to comment?
