Day of Caring encourages helping hands The future for Day of Caring, at least foreseen by United Way Estevan’s president, is a communitywide event in the spirit of volunteerism. “That’s ideally what we want this to evolve into, or my vision anyway,” said local president Roberta DeRosier. “It’s for us to only be a part of this day, where everybody in Estevan is doing something. The United Way is doing something, but pay it forward. (It’s important) that everybody takes that one day out of the year to make a conscious effort to help somebody.” The Day of Caring is an initiative by the United Way to bring volunteers together in an effort to get projects, both big and small, completed for others who maybe wouldn’t be able to do the work themselves. A lot of the jobs involve spring cleanup-type work, landscaping and other yard work, as well as cleaning out eavestroughs. Lori Buchanan, United Way Estevan’s executive director, added their mission is partly to create a desire to help out. “The biggest thing is trying to turn people on to the idea of helping someone out, someone that could just use a hand or a brighter day,” said Buchanan, “and yet, then to continue that throughout the year. We’re just encouraging people to carry it on year round, and give a hand when they see a need.” DeRosier added, “Eventually, we’ll just be one part of that. Everybody will be doing their thing, and we’ll be one part of that.” The organizers have already extended the or-

A group of volunteers at last year’s Day of Caring completes some ﬁnishing touches on a ﬁre pit after planting a few trees. United Way Estevan’s Day of Caring is on May 30. ganization of projects beyond themselves this year, asking schools to take part in projects of their own. Each school will be organizing their own initiatives in the spirit of Day of Caring on May 30. Some of the projects will be done for the regular customers of Day of Caring. Places like Creighton Lodge and the Estevan Regional Nursing Home always have something for the United Way volunteers to do, and DeRosier said those projects are often some of the most rewarding. “Those ones are always a hit. The residents there just love having somebody come in, and you’re working, but you get to visit too, so it’s always a highlight to work at one of those.” DeRosier also said this year they have seen

more support than they have ever received previously from the business community, a sentiment echoed by Buchanan. “(There has been) lots of interest, that’s for sure, from businesses, and we’re getting a lot of individual volunteers now, which is wonderful towards crunch time,” said Buchanan. The deadline for projects and volunteers was May 15. While they are more strict about not accepting new projects after that date, they won’t turn away any volunteers who step forward in the next few days. Organizers were matching people to projects earlier this week, however. Buchanan noted they have close to 100 volunteers to take on about 18 projects. “We still really, really encourage people to do

their own, like if they’re working that day and can’t join us, to do their own project and help out a neighbour friend,” added DeRosier. Everyone is encouraged to take some time to help out another on the Day of Caring, even if it is completely separate from United Way’s efforts. For those who do their own project, they can let United Way know, so the local branch can post it with the other projects done that day. There will also be an Enbridge-sponsored community barbecue from noon to 1 p.m. at the Alliance Church. While it’s complimentary for all volunteers, donations from the public will be accepted. Fire burns in all of us In many ways, it doesn’t take much to mesmerize us, to stop us in our tracks and just freeze us in a moment. Some things are simple but magnificent, like a great voice. Norm Park recently noted the vocalists that cause him pause, but for the young crowd today, it’s Adele. It’s hard to argue for any voice that could top hers in today’s music. Some things make us stop because of how complicated they are. I can sit and read about or listen to Stephen Hawking any time, even though the majority of his stuff is way over my head. I don’t understand exactly what he’s talking about, I just understand he puts forward some incredible ideas and I enjoy finding out about mind-boggling things. Those are two examples of the greatness that humanity has to offer, but maybe the greatest thing we’ve ever offered is fire. It’s campfire season again, so every weekend from now until September people will be sitting transfixed by flames licking the air in quick, reflexive bursts. There’s just something relaxing about a campfire. There isn’t really much to

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers debate about why; it’s in our blood. The soothing nature of the campfire leaves us truly mesmerized. We can’t take our eyes away, the same way a golden retriever just can’t ignore a tennis ball. It’s fun to think about the things we have little control over thanks to thousands of years of an activity being ingrained into our DNA. The campfire is a universal sign of comfort and safety, and at a biological level now, we all share those feelings. Since our first fires, our genetics have just changed and now we all have that fire gene. A great way to quiet down a party is to sit everyone in front of the fire. Pretty soon everyone will just be sitting there staring at fire. At any other time, eight

people sitting in a circle sharing no words or glances would be incredibly awkward, but when you put a crackling fire in the middle of that group, it’s simply serene. No matter how advanced we become as a species, there will always be those simple things that reside inside our genes. We’re certainly more sophisticated than animals, but we all still have those animal instincts. I’ve read that laughter was used to communicate safety back before language really took off. If you wanted the rest of the group to know everything was A-OK, you’d just laugh. Now we can tell everyone it’s all good, but the laughter remains. I don’t want to give up laughter, but it’s one of those things that seems really silly when you think about it. Spectacular but silly. We have bug zappers that draw in airborne insects. Just like the bugs that are drawn to those electric blue rays, we are drawn to fire. We’ve just also developed a healthy fear of the flames too, so we know enough not to touch them. I guess that’s still how we have the bugs beat.

Computer usage growing on the farm There is something interesting taking place in farming that most people not directly involved in the industry probably appreciate, and that is the increasing use of computer technology. You can be driving down any grid road on the Canadian Prairies and see a tractor in the field, and from the car seat it doesn’t look all that different from a tractor a quarter century ago, except for its sheer size. But climb inside the cab of a new tractor and you quickly recognize the level of technology that farmers now utilize. It’s also the same when looking at a combine or sprayer. Equipment today is highly computerized - with monitors for everything. The information the monitors compile gives farmers insight into what they are doing in the field - something farmers could not previously dream of knowing. The monitors provide farmers with the ability to know exactly what is happening as the wheel turns across the field, and they also offer them knowledge to maximize exactly what they are doing that day. Perhaps the area the public should be aware of is the way global positioning technology is creating precision farming in terms of laying down both fertilizer and crop protection products. By preventing pass overlaps, and

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist adjusting application rates to areas of the field, farmers optimize their investment. The environment has to benefit too. There is nothing to be gained by fertilizer that is not utilized by a crop so it may leech to groundwater. There is also nothing to be gained by doubling application of herbicides. The technology available to farmers is allowing them to be “greener” in terms of what their impact on the environment is. And things are going to get better. It is not so much science fiction as when the technology arrives at the farm gate that farm sprayers will have the technology to recognize individual plants in a field and apply spray to those and not the entire green canopy. Once such technology is purchased, it will have an obvious payback by reducing total product applied. You could see the same plant recognition technology being ideal for in-field application of foliar supplement that would

go directly to plants and nothing else. Farmers are already seeing that benefit on the fertilizer application side of things. They are able to overlay soil test results from across a large field and the computers adjust application rates to specific areas within a field. For example, the added nutrient requirements on the top of a hill will not be the same as in a field’s low spots, nor will they be the same in a lighter area that may be more saline. The advantages of precision farming will include precise placement of seeds in the future. Large seed plants, such as corn, have been the main focus of the development of seeding systems that meter out seeds precisely to ensure the optimum number in a row. Over time that same technology is moving to be used in small seed crops such as canola. The monitors maximize seeding rates, reducing seed costs, and helping the crop maximize production based on plants per square foot. Although the equipment may look similar to that of a quarter century ago, the technology of computer monitors is fundamentally changing how crops are planted, cared for and harvested. Certainly precision farming is at the heart of operations today, and will only become more refined moving forward.

Goals set for local MS walk There are many marches that draw attention and raise funds for a number of different causes, but Estevan’s MS Walk is of particular importance to Dave Seipp. Seipp, the local MS Walk co-ordinator for the past decade, decided to get involved and organize the walk because of the diagnosis of his older brother. Last year, the local walk raised about $39,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, which pledges the goal of curing MS. To help, Seipp has laid out a goal of $45,000 for this year’s walk. Helping Seipp are all the walkers. He said the walk has been gradually growing year by year, and the attitude of the participants is a hopeful one. “They’re pretty ex-

cited, pretty pumped up by the day. We all hope to find a cure,” said Seipp. The May 27 walk begins and ends at the Souris Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The paricipants will head to Wellock Road and then continue to St. Joseph’s Hospital before heading back to the leisure centre for the post-walk activities. Seipp also has some contingency plans in case of rain or any other form of inclement weather. That would be to move the walk into Spectra Place. “People with families that have little kids, they don’t want to walk out there,” he said, so moving everything inside would be best. When the walk is over, there is still plenty to do. Seipp noted there is a ceremony for individual as well

as team prizes. A barbecue will be available as a prize. There are a number of categories for prizes, like best costumes and most team spirit. Seipp said while he does a sweep of everyone there, the decisions on who wins don’t rest wholly on his shoulders. “I get some people to help me decide on those,” he said, noting it’s often some of the other volunteers. Pre-registered walkers have been raising pledges for several weeks, but Seipp noted that those who wish to walk the day of the event can make a $20 pledge toward local fundraising efforts. He’s received donations from businesses already, and as far as pre-walk fundraising goes, they are doing as well as previous years. “I am sitting at the same place as last year. We’re

Should employers be monitoring employee Internet usage during the workday?

This is being debated as a right to privacy versus working duty matter. What people need to realize is that there isn’t really any such thing as privacy at the workplace, and nobody should expect it. That’s just part of work. We believe in transparency in government because it works for us, so why shouldn’t employers ensure transparency for the people who work for them. In one of the comment sections for this topic, the first entry was “What will be next? Invasion of employees’ bedrooms?” While Pierre Trudeau made that great quote about government and its role in civilians’ lives, this isn’t quite the same. Employers obviously shouldn’t have access to their employees’ bedrooms, unless those employees are making bedrooms out of their offices. A boss will almost definitely have a problem with an employee sleeping in his or her office. When it’s at work, sleeping is the exact same as Internet usage. Sleeping at your desk wastes time in the same way surfing the web for personal business does. The connected world we live in has created a lot of new distractions for everyone while they’re working. You don’t have to work in an office to have this problem. Someone at a construction zone with a cellphone has the same opportunity to browse. In some jobs, there may be situations that would encourage browsing because employees need to be up-to-date on the latest information on particular subjects. The Internet is about getting information, and in some jobs that is necessary. Those situations may be more challenging to deal with when employees who should have access to the Internet take advantage of the freedom that privilege entails. Some places block certain websites, but if Internet access is considered a right for all, then that’s kind of like depriving your employee of water. There has to be a middle ground somewhere.

I don’t have an issue with my employers checking up on my Internet use. After all, I’m only using the Internet to look up things for work. And check all my social media. And e-mails. And favourite websites, like cracked. com and just general horoscopes. I know that in a lot of ways, that’s not the kind of Internet usage most employers like to see, but I think it’s realistic and I know I’m definitely not the only person who’s checking Facebook during work hours. Social media is actually a facet of my career, so visiting sites like Twitter actually make me a better journalist. The same excuse can’t really be used for Pinterest, but that’s not important ... As long as employers are letting employees know that they will be monitoring their time spent online, I don’t see anything wrong with it. However, if bosses are sitting in their office secretly watching employees read their private e-mail, that’s not OK. Employees should know that they’re being monitored, so they can make the informed decision about whether or not to cruise the ’net during work hours. Employers should also mention to employees when their web time is inappropriate. If I’m spending too much time pinning designs for my future house, my boss should let me know, so I can knock it off. I’m sure I’m not the only person who would rather be politely told that I need to spend less time surfing and more time working. At least for me, most things I Google can be passed off as research for future projects.

Snowbird damaged after collision with bird

PROVINCIAL MOOSE JAW, Sask. - A Snowbird jet was damaged when it hit a bird during the aerobatic team’s first show of the season. The military precision flying team’s performance over 15 Wing Moose Jaw on Wednesday was going well until one of the Tutor jets struck the bird. Te a m l e a d M a j o r Wayne Mott says they stopped the show so the pilot could land, then restarted the performance. Mott says the minor damage to the plane should be fixed by Friday when the team leaves for a Winnipeg show this weekend. The Snowbirds will perform at 39 air shows across North America in the 2012 season. NATIONAL OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada won’t quash an appeal over the withdrawal of lifesupport from a comatose patient. In a quick ruling today on a motion to quash, the justices refused to throw out the case, saying it will get a full hearing later this year. The case pits the

family of Hassan Rasouli against his doctors over the question of when doctors can withdraw life support. Rasouli had been diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state and his doctors wanted to pull the plug over the family’s objections. The doctors went to court to clarify who may make such a decision and when. *** CHICAGO - The time has come to finally close the door on more than a decade of Canadian military involvement in Afghanistan, the prime minister said Monday at the end of the NATO summit. Though Canada will continvue to financially support the Afghan army, there will be no boots on the ground once the NATOled mission concludes in two years time, Stephen Harper said. “The end date is firm and final,” Harper said. “Canada will not have a military mission after March 2014.” Harper’s announcement came as NATO and its partner nations re-affirmed they are on the way out of a long and costly war that has to date claimed the

miners were rescued after the incident which caused a fire at the Mimosa platinum mine about 400 kilometres (248 miles) southwest of the capital, Harare. A recent story on si.com said the Reds are working “to perfect his slider and his sinking, two-seam fastball.” The online article said the Reds still aren’t sure how to handle him. “He will be a starter,” Reds manager Dusty Baker told si.com. Reds’ fans are asking “when?” Last year, Chapman pitched a mere 50 innings, giving up 24 hits, or one every other inning. This year, his one-hit-every-three-inning -performance is a testament to his improvement. Maybe the Reds will move him into the starting rotation when his hits-to-innings-pitched -ratio falls to one in five or six. It’s understandable that

the Reds don’t want to rush things. Chapman has the potential to be one of the best ever, but the Reds, who have the talent to be a playoff contender, are meandering along around .500 and could use an ace like Chapman to become their stud starter. Aroldis Chapman no longer throws the unhittable 106 mile-per-hour fastball for the Cincinnati Reds. Now, he’s around 99 mph with his fastball, a sick 88 with his slider, and these days even more difficult for National League batters to hit. Chapman, a 24-year-old Cuban refugee who fled the Communist country while his country’s national baseball team was playing in the Netherlands a couple of years ago, is being brought along slowly – some think too slowly – by the Reds, who won the right to sign him and gave him a six-year, $30 million contract. Young pitchers who command that kind of dough are usually either stars of the starting rotation or key closers. In Chapman, the Reds have what may be the best eighth-inning set-up man in baseball history. Eighth-inning set-up men usually earn salaries similar to backup infielders. But what a gem the Reds have in Chapman: Through May 20, the left-hander had pitched 22 innings over 18 games for the Reds, and allowed only seven hits fewer than one every three innings. Strikeouts? Thirtynine, nearly two per inning.

German Potato-Salad Packet Grill spuds with bacon pieces, then toss with a cider-vinegar dressing. 2 1/2 pounds (medium) red potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks 2 slices uncooked bacon, chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper 2 green onions, chopped 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 teaspoons sugar 1. In large bowl, toss potatoes with bacon, salt

and pepper until potatoes are evenly coated. 2. Using 18-inch-wide heavy-duty foil, layer two 20-by-18-inch sheets to make a double thickness. Spray with nonstick cooking spray. Place potato mixture on center of stacked foil. Bring long sides of foil up and over potato mixture and fold over several times to seal well. Fold ends to seal in juices, making sure not to fold in too far in order to leave room for heat circulation inside. 3. Place packet on grill over medium heat and cook 30 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender, turning packet over once halfway

through grilling. 4. Remove packet from grill and carefully open; add green onions, vinegar and sugar to potato mixture, tossing gently to combine. Makes 8 (3/4 cup) servings.

ANSWER: Most people develop a walk natural for them, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Some general pointers about the proper walking style are worth incorporating into your walking pattern. Keep your head erect with eyes focused about 20 feet in front of you. Your arms should be bent at the elbow. When the right foot hits the ground, the left arm should be in front of your body, and vice versa when your left foot hits the ground. The heel of the foot should strike the ground ﬁrst, and the liftoff should come from the toes. Older people tend to shorten their walking stride in an attempt to keep both feet always on the ground. This gives them more balance and stability. ANSWER: Have no fear, T.M.C. Dust mites have not done, are not doing and will not do anything harmful to you. I have them too. So does just about everyone. They’re all over the world. They’re less than one-hundredth of an inch, barely visible. They don’t bite you. They feed on dead skin that has fallen off the body. They don’t crawl in and out of your mouth, as the letter writer

suggested. Dust mites don’t give you any illness, although some people are allergic to them and itch when exposed to them. In a very few people, they might trigger an asthma attack. None of this has happened to you or me. I don’t think it ever will. Dust mites need high humidity to survive, around 70 percent. You can cut down on their number if you keep your room humidity lower than that. Don’t try to get rid of them. They’re part of the biological diversity that exists in our world. I don’t know if they do us any good, but they don’t do us any harm, aside from the allergy thing. Sleep in peace. I apologize for ruining a night’s sleep for you. Please don’t ask me about bedbugs. Southeast Regional Victim Services is looking for volunteers in the Estevan City Police / Estevan RCMP detachment area to work with victims of crime and traumatic events by providing information, advocacy, support and referral. Victim Services is a policeaffiliated program. The following qualifications are needed: * 18 years of age or older * pass a police security screening and take an oath of confidentiality * sincere interest in and the ability to work with people * successfully complete initial training program and participate in ongoing training and staff meetings Training is provided free of charge. The Estevan Police Service was established in 1906 and has been built on a tradition of excellence. The City of Estevan has experienced a great deal of growth in the past three years, especially in the energy sector including oil, coal mining and power generation. This growth and economic boom has created several challenges within the City of Estevan including the Police Service. The Estevan Police Service is increasing the size of the Police Service and currently has two vacancies for the position of Constable. The Estevan Police Service has a rigorous application process; however, this process is to ensure that the people we hire to wear the Estevan Police Service uniform are the right people for the job. If you are hired as a new recruit you will enter a rigorous training period of 42 weeks. The first 18 weeks will be at the Saskatchewan Police College in Regina, Saskatchewan where you will receive instruction in criminal law, officer safety, self defence, firearms, report writing and cross cultural training. After graduating from the Police College you will receive a further 24 weeks of field training under the guidance of a Field Training Officer. Experienced members are encouraged to apply. The Estevan City Police would like to remind the residents of the following regarding PEDESTRIAN SAFETY. Pedestrian Safety is for ALL ages. Unfortunately, in traffic accidents involving pedestrians and motorists, it is the pedestrian who suffers, often with tragic results. In many cases it is not the driver’s fault. It is the responsibility of both driver and pedestrian to ensure each others safety by the following some simple rules. PEDESTRIAN: Cross at marked crosswalks or traffic lights, not in the middle of the block or between parked cars; -make sure drivers see you before you cross; -Cross when traffic has come to a complete stop; At a traffic light, cross at the beginning of a green light. Do not cross once the “Don’t walk” signal begins to flash or once the light has turned yellow. NEVER cross on a red light; -Watch for traffic turning at intersections or entering and leaving driveways; -Wear bright or light-coloured clothing or reflective strips, when walking in dusk or darkness. MOTORIST: Be patient, especially with older pedestrians who need more time to cross the road; -Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning; -Remember, stay alert and slow down on residential streets and through school zones. Fines for these offences (motorists or pedestrians) range from $70.00-$230.00. AS A PARENT OR CAREGIVER: -Teach and reinforce the proper techniques for crossing the road safely with your child. -Stress the importance of walking on the inside of the sidewalk, or where there are no sidewalks, as far away as possible from the travelled portion of the road: -Stopping before the edge of the sidewalk at all times; -Being alert and stopping at driveways and where there are no curbs. Plan now for emergencies Q: I wanted to write and remind your readers to have a plan in place in case of natural disasters. I live in a hurricaneprone area, so I keep what I call a “hurricane kit” ready at all times. It’s stocked with first-aid supplies, food, water and other items that I can grab and throw into the car in case my family needs to evacuate. I also know the location of important papers so I can grab those, too. And I reserved a corner of my garage to store post-hurricane supplies like tarps, a generator and basic tools. I learned to do all this several years ago when a Category 3 hurricane passed through my town, but not until after the storm. Now I’m prepared before the storm. -- Curtis F., Orlando A: Thanks for reminding us all, Curtis! Organization is key to surviving during and after a natural disaster, fire or other calamity. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: --Prepare your family

for the most likely scenario depending on your geographic location: hurricane, tornado, blizzard, wildfire, flood or other event. --Learn about and prepare for household emergencies, including fire, a gas leak, carbon monoxide leak, etc. --Create an escape plan and rehearse it with your family. --Create an evacuation kit that includes important papers, food, water, first aid, blankets and other essential items. --Include pets in your plans! Add pet food and medicines to your evacuation kit, along with a copy of their vaccination record and license. And keep their carry crate accessible. --If you must shelter

in place during a disaster, designate your home’s safe spot (basement, central room, closet or bathtub, for example), and make sure everyone knows to get there quickly. --Create a post-disaster supply stash that includes several tarps (to cover damaged roof areas or create temporary shelter), a generator, canned foods, water and first aid, and store in a reinforced area if possible. This guide has most of the patterns issued, is fully illustrated and easy to navigate. I think the prices listed accurately reflect the marketplace. Keep in mind that values change from region to region. For example, Coors pottery brings a much higher price in Colorado than it does in Vermont. The June child sex-abuse trial of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky will not be delayed, a judge ruled Monday. The one-sentence order by Judge John Cleland did not explain his reasons, but it means the case will very likely begin with jury selection inside a central Pennsylvania courthouse in barely two weeks. Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola had asked for the delay on May 9, arguing that he needed more time to find and interview witnesses, and that pending criminal charges against two Penn State administrators made them unavailable as witnesses. He said without the delay, he was concerned he would not be able to represent Sandusky effectively and adequately.
