Cheers to the person who paid me for picking up garbage during my morning walk. There was a nicely folded $20 bill with your food leftovers! Cheers to the golf courses for opening and getting all the men out of the house. We were getting real tired of them being around all the time.

Cheers to the Estevan Rotary on their 90th anniversary.
Jeers to getting your garbage picked up at random and unknown times when it is supposed to be picked up every week.
Jeers to the lady in the shiny black truck who, when she saw me looking out the window, waited until she was farther down Bannatyne Avenue to throw out her garbage. Jeers to flat tires. Three nails in my tires in two weeks! Jeers to grocery stores that have garbage filling their parking lots and to the shoppers who don’t use the garbage bins in those parking lots.

It’s the season of outside doing The warmth, the sun and the longer days bring so many possibilities. I’m a man of the summer. I like doing things outside. Even things that can be done indoors I prefer to do in the fresh air, with the breeze gently disturbing my surroundings. It’s nice to curl up with a good book on the couch, but it’s so much better to sprawl out on a Muskoka chair in your backyard with the sun’s rays cutting through the leaves of the tree you’ve chosen to seek shelter beneath. It’s so relaxing as a quiet wind ripples across the pages of the book, a bird chirps from a distant branch and some jerk in a jacked up truck revs his engine as he whips through an otherwise peaceful residential area. I am beginning to build up my summer reading list, which includes Chuck Wendig’s The Blue Blazes that I am very excited about, as well as Promise of Blood, the first book in Brian McClellan’s new trilogy. If you have any books to share that I should have on my reading list, please let me know. No new Dan Brown books, please. There is a lot more to do outside than read. The other indoor activity that I re-
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers ally love doing beyond the walls of my abode is cook. Everybody loves barbecue season, and while you can burn some propane and grill a pork chop in the heart of frostbite season, it’s that time of year when you can sit outside as you cook. That way you can smell exactly what you’re cooking, which is what makes barbecuing so spectacular in the first place. It’s no fun grilling when you have to jump in and out of the house to do it. That makes it a chore, and while cooking can be a chore, there is something very tranquil about singeing the edges of a steak on a quiet summer evening that sets it apart from boiling water and ensuring the pot doesn’t spill over after you add your pasta. And I know everybody around here likes to take their cars and gigantic trucks to car washes, but I still like to wash my own car with the help of my friends Frodo
and Spud (my fists). There’s definitely something therapeutic about spending some tender, quality time with your car. I like to turn on some tunes as I give Patsy Walker a nice scrub and a shower in the sun. It’s one of those things that just feels good to do. It’s kind of like sitting around a campfire. There’s something deeply ingrained in us as people that really gives us comfort as we wash our cars by hand. You don’t get that same satisfaction of a job well done as you wait in a line for 15 minutes waiting to roll through the misty car wash showers. They may get the job done, but I’d take a hose and a bucket of water with suds any day. At the very least it gets you outside for a brief time on a Sunday afternoon. What makes all of these activities that much better is preparing the drink of your choice in either glass or bottle form. You might think I’m crazy, but I am 99 per cent sure that condensation on the outside of your glass makes a drink taste that much better. There must be some scientific explanation that would back me up but I haven’t heard about yet.
Scientific progress should be closely monitored In addition to holding basically a lifetime interest in agriculture, I also happen to be a fan of science fiction. The two areas of interest occasionally converge, and frankly I am never sure if that is a good or bad thing. On the one hand there is the Gene Roddenberry vision of science fiction exemplified by his Star Trek works. Not everything in the world of scientific development is without its bumps in the Star Trek world, smaller bumps were seen pre-Hollywood, but humankind always dealt with such bumps in a way that left our species enjoying a rather enlightened future. Aldous Huxley, in A Brave New World, didn’t see things as rosily as Roddenberry, and it would seem most science fiction writers fall into the Huxley camp in terms of what lies ahead, even if many ultimately see the human spirit triumphing. By now, as a reader, you are wondering what this has to do with farming. Well regular readers will know I am a pretty big proponent of genetic modification in agriculture, and that view hasn’t changed. In a perfect world we might not need GMO, but our species has long ago made sure Earth is far from perfect anymore. And a bit like locusts and lemmings, we continue to wildly grow world population, leaving us few options but to look for innovative ways to feed everyone. That is why I shudder at a development
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist such as the so-called “terminator gene” technology which would have crops producing essentially sterile grain. It puts too much control of food production in commercial hands and takes it away from everyday people. Now I read about Monsanto’s research and development work on RNA interference (RNAi) for pest management. Apparently RNA interference is a process to turn down or shut off the expression of certain genes, which suppresses the production of a specific protein in an organism, which I’ll admit is a concept well above Grade 12 biology taken 35 years ago even if Jim Weseen was a fine instructor. “In the case of crop pests, RNAi could potentially shut down proteins related to metabolism or reproduction, thus killing or disabling target insects,” related a recent Western Producer article. “... RNA interference is alluring because it can be tailored to a specific pest, unlike pesticides that kill harmful and beneficial insects alike.” So, yes I can see the faces of researchers and even those of farmers lighting up.
The ability to attack particular insects with a specific RNAi created application, and have it be effective, sounds great. We are after all, aware that when you spray for a certain bad bug, you generally take all its beneficial cousins with it. But there are inherent concerns that come with such science. Nature has a way of mutating organisms, and we also know organisms inherently adapt, that is why some poisons now affect rats less than they once did, germs become resistant to certain medications, and weeds to certain herbicides. How nature might adapt to RNA changes over the long term is a mystery that harkens back to my science fiction interest, and it might not be particularly good. There is also the issue that while in its purest form science is neither good nor bad, people are far more white and black. One should always worry at least a little about what sort of applications a science might be being adapted for in a few military bunkers and mad-men labs out there. Wae might like to think such things are merely the stuff of fiction, but we only need to look at some of the research being undertaken in Nazi Germany to know science can be easily twisted. The more that science flirts with changing the building blocks of life, the more diligent we need to be before accepting even the first step down such an uncertain road.

Clean Up
The Relay for Life project is scheduled for all of May weekends at the Estevan Shoppers Mall. One of the first events staged on May 4 was a custom car and truck show and shine event in the parking lot with proceeds being directed toward the fight for cancer cures.
Guides, Brownies and Sparks teamed up on the morning of Saturday, May 4 to spend some time doing some litter picking on the ECS grounds near Kensington Avenue and along the beltway to Spruce Ridge School. It was all part of their annual Tim Hortons Cleanup Campaign. The cleaning blitz attracted about 30 youngsters plus leaders. Rya Strilaeff

IN MEMORIAM Gerald (Gerry) William Harris October 4, 1965 May 13, 1988 You never said, “I’m leaving, You never said, “Goodbye. You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. A million times you’ve been there for us, And even when we cried, If love could have saved you, You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a special place No one can ever fill. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, That day God called you home. - With love always, Theresa, Adam, Jan, Cathy, Barb, extended family and friends.
