Tuttle soaks up Boston Marathon experience By Jordan Baker Of the Southeast Trader Express From the staging area to the start line was about three-quarters of a mile. “You’re walking with your other runners shoulder to shoulder for almost a mile. You see this sea of people going down this hill, and then it turns,” said Ward Tuttle. Walking to the start line of the Boston Marathon was a final moment of anticipatory electricity before the race began, like the slow chug of a roller coaster as it slowly climbs the lift hill before releasing down the first slope in a rush of acceleration. For Tuttle, an Estevanite and investment adviser at RBC Dominion Securities, his experience at the 118th Boston Marathon was an uplifting one he won’t soon forget. “I’d never experienced that. It built that excitement even more, and even the first three miles of the race, you’re just body to body.” Tuttle, who turned 48 over the weekend, ran on April 21 with the roughly 32,000 other marathoners in the men’s race. After leaving their gear at the finish line, they were transported to the start. Runners were organized in four waves of about 9,000 people and those were segmented into between six and nine corrals. Tuttle was a unique case as one of the runners at the marathon who did not qualify. Traditionally, runners qualified based on their age and race time. Tuttle’s age group had a qualifying time of about three hours and 30 minutes, a point he said he wasn’t at for the 26 mile ordeal. “I maybe could run one of those this year, but through an affiliation with John Hancock, who is the main sponsor of the race, I
Ward Tuttle (photo courtesy of marathonfoto.com was able to get an invitation to the race without qualifying,” said Tuttle, who hoped to run a marathon time of about three hours and 45 minutes. “It was tossed out to me as an idea back in September or October, and in November I got the official word I had been accepted into the race.” With the sponsor’s invitation, Tuttle had the winter to train. With the marathon in Regina held in the fall, he had all spring and summer to train. For Boston, he had to train throughout the Prairie winter. Not as amenable to outdoor running, he worked a mix of treadmill training and running at the indoor track at Affinity Place along with outdoor runs when the temperature wasn’t too harsh. “I’ve always run recreationally, and I would have to say I’m still technically a recreational runner. My interest in marathons started later on in life,” he said, noting he started training in 2011 for his first marathon, Regina’s Queen City Marathon in 2012. “I loved it. It was really challenging. I did a few things wrong because I was
a rookie,” Tuttle said with a rueful smile. He didn’t hydrate enough and ran a little too hard in the beginning. “All the textbook things I was told not to do.” He did push his way through and finished the race. Despite the few missteps, it wasn’t a miserable experience but rather an exhilarating one. The actual race involves a complex strategy and in-depth organization for the ultimate test of sticking with the plan. At what miles do you take on hydration, at what point do you add carbohydrates to store for later on and injury management, something Tuttle, much to his disappointment, had to cope with very early on in the race. At Mile 5, the mild case of plantar fasciitis he had been battling flared up. “It reared its head that day. It stopped me from maybe running the race I wanted to, but I still was able to run a pretty comfortable race overall.” Aches, pains and other bothers of the body are to be expected during a marathon, but having begun so early on, while not crippling, prob-
ably affected his race time. “You expect to be sore after mile 18, 19, 20. You expect certain muscles to start to talk back and complain. When something happens in Mile 5, it’s disappointing, but in my mind, I was making certain I could finish the race.” For Tuttle, he just had to manage the discomfort by being more mindful of the area, landing his foot in a slightly different way to make it as comfortable as it could be. With that change, he was able to complete the rest of the race. After running through Boston for four hours and 13 minutes, he crossed the finish line, a little behind his goal of three hours, 45 minutes. “When you enter downtown, which would be a mile and a half out, that’s where you get a tremendous sense of the crowd because the noise with the buildings cascades and it comes right at you. About the last third of a mile, you take a sharp left-hand turn onto Boylston, which is where the finish line is, and once you see the finish line gate, you know it’s happening and you’re so energized.” Supporting him in Boston were his wife Lori Ann and son Jack, who were waiting for him near the finish line. Tuttle ran in the final wave of the day, which largely consisted of runners from last year’s race who weren’t able to finish, following the bombing. “Most of those were in my wave. Having the time ahead to meet with them and talk and hear about what happened to them, that was really quite powerful,” said Tuttle. “Each of those towns threw their own party. That was really neat. The signs on the course were hilarious and supportive,” said Tuttle. “I just felt blessed that I could participate. It was
an uplifting experience. It really signified a moving forward for that city. They want to get back to normal.” With the runners in the Energy City, he’s hoping the sport continues to grow and the running community gets a little stronger.
“There are a lot of very good marathon runners in Estevan who I’ve met and I hope it catches on in Estevan more and more. I’d love to see a running group in Estevan. It would be a great support system in place for runners.”

We could all do with a little more laughter. If it is as great for us as meditation, we may start devoting portions of our day to hearty guffaws. Laughing is primal and animalistic, something that we all do, but as a physical reaction it isn’t necessarily clear what purpose it serves, like yawning. We laugh when we’re in a good mood or experience something funny, and we do it when we’re uncomfortable. Laughing is a sign of our good mood and is infectious and maybe it’s good for us. Results of a study released at a biology conference in San Diego point out that laughter effects the brain in a way similar to meditation. It’s not exactly news that laughing feels good. We’re generally in excellent moods when we chuckle along with everyone else. But what if laughter actually makes us healthier mentally and physically. Our minds have some astonishing control over our physical well-being after all, so perhaps daily laughter will become the next great thing peddled by all the experts out there who want you to have a better life. In place of exercise or a good night’s sleep, we’ll be advised by doctors to laugh
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers more. I’m not much for meditation, so I’ll take side splitting if I’m looking to remove a day of stress from my shoulders. We set aside time for all sorts of things in our lives. We sleep at certain times, we make sure we get some amount of exercise each day and we make sure we do something to relax or unwind. At least, those are things we should be making time for, even as they are the first things we sacrifice in favour of work or dealing with family. My grandfather sets an example I’d like to follow. He’s a retired teacher who now has an entire bookshelf devoted to joke books, all of which seem to have wildly original titles like 1,001 Jokes or 1,001 More Jokes. He has carefully scrutinized each book on the shelf and added checkmarks to the majority of jokes, one check signifying the joke is a dud and three checks if it’s great. The ones so hilarious
he can’t get through them without crying get four checkmarks. He reviews them and adds a few to his memory bank before he speaks at an engagement or just invites people over for a drink. It seems a bit much sometimes but he sets aside time to laugh and that’s a noble enough pursuit for me. At the same time as the study suggesting laughter and meditation could be equally important facets of our lives, another study linked laughter to protecting against memory loss in seniors. Doctors say it reduces stress hormones in the brain that damage neurons, aiding in memory. We tend to remember jokes or funny anecdotes, so that isn’t too far-fetched either. Take time to laugh with co-workers because it will help keep you refreshed and may help in problem solving. Laughter is a miracle drug and it’s free, even if sometimes it can be hard to find. Whether laughing will stave off memory loss in your golden years or relieve stress as much as meditation, I urge everyone to laugh more. Find a funny friend to spend more time with, watch a terrible sitcom that inspires giggles or go to a comedy show that comes through town. Whatever it is, keep the laughs coming.
Agriculture to continue move into world of sci-fi
It is always a sure sign of spring when the Spring 4-H Steer and Heifer Show takes place in Yorkton. To start with. I must throw some kudos to the Yorkton Exhibition Association for continuing to sponsor the event. To the credit of the YEA they have never lost sight of the fact agriculture was what brought them into existence decades ago, and while today they sponsor a range of entertainment events, they stay true to their roots through events such as the Spring 4-H Show. In that regard they are not unique, as fair boards across the province and Prairies continue to support agriculture in a variety of ways. The 4-H Show is also a time where an old farm boy like myself can find himself waxing nostalgic about his youth spent taking in livestock shows. Fairs were my summer camps. A trip to the Toronto Royal was a highlight of my formative years. The Canadian Western Agribition, an annual November pilgrimage. But I won’t go that route today. Though the past is something we need to remember, it is the future we should always be aspiring to. The world of agriculture today involves so much science fiction if one
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist were to look at it from the perspective of my youth. The thoughts of genetically modified crops, high clearance sprayers, global positioning technology and robotic machinery controls would not have been believed by any save a few futurists from the perspective of the 1970s. When you analyze the developments we see as commonplace in farming today, the education required by a farmer is as diverse as any other field of endeavour. A farmer, even as we have moved away from mixed operations to more specialized farms, must today have skills that include marketing, computers, robotics, and a number of other skill sets my parents never had to imagine on the farm. So as I walked around the 4-H event I found myself pondering what the young members involved in the show will see happen in farming in the decades ahead. I am coming up on the 40th anniver-
sary of my graduation from high school. Four decades in our age is a massive amount of time in terms of change. We have all heard the statistics about more scientists alive today than in the combined centuries of our past. That means change and massive amounts of it in increasingly shorter spans of time. As mentioned, the last 40 years have seen huge change in farming. We only need to think of a landscape once spotted with wooden elevators, now basically gone, to see a very obvious example of that. Now push the fast forward button on developments for another 40 years, and even someone who loves science fiction cannot imagine what will come in terms of agriculture. Sure, we know there will be more mouths to feed as the world population grows, but what crops and tech farmers will use to meet that reality is unknown, although it will be decidedly different than what is in place today. That will mean those 4-H members who carry their interest forward as either farmers or in the broader field of agriculture will need to be broadly educated and highly adaptive to the changes, which will be a matter of course in the years ahead.

Regina Riot building women’s football in the province By Jordan Baker of the Southeast Trader Express The Regina Riot went on the road to tour their team around the province and energizing Saskatchewan’s young girls while drumming up interest for both the team and the sport. The club came to Estevan April 26 to run drills at Dana Quewezance Field in Woodlawn Regional Park with a handful of local girls attending the afternoon camp, despite the rain, to get a taste of who the Riot is. Lisa Ziegler, Regina Riot general manager, said with their tour also stopping in Moose Jaw April 13 and Weyburn April 27, they are hoping to grow a strong base of female football players on the Prairies. “Female football in the province right now is growing incredibly, with the Valkyrie in Saskatoon and the Regina Riot, two of the best teams in the league,” said Ziegler. The only losses suffered by either of those teams in the Western Women’s Canadian Football League have been at the hands of the other. Female football has seen about 11 per cent growth in Saskatchewan, including flag and touch along with the tackle sport. “That’s why we’re coming here: to show girls
there is a team for them to go to. When they start to look at universities, we want them to look at the University of Regina and say ‘Oh I can go play football for the Riot.’” She said for young girls looking to get into the sport, Estevan Minor Football is the place to start. The Riot also hold a fall camp, this year in October, where they welcome girls as young as 10 years old to run some drills and get a taste for the game. “Minor football is where it all happens, and if they can stay in minor football, definitely join your high school football teams,” said Ziegler. “Get those girls to keep coming out. When they see they can start playing for the Riot when they’re 16 years old, that’s a motivation to keep staying with that minor program.” This leg of the tour involved two parts to the day, one with skills and the other in full equipment. “We invite the girls to go to each position, so they get a chance to try all the positions and see if something interests them more than the others,” she said, noting football for both men and women has a position for every body type. Throughout the tour, the Riot invited girls in the area to come and practice with the players and see
the speed and calibre of the female game. It didn’t matter if they had played any football before. “There is a girl out here today, there’s only one out of all of them who has played football. I heard that even the boys didn’t want to go up against her in oneon-one drills,” said Ziegler. “Being in Saskatchewan, we’re the home of football, so girls know a little about football. Almost everyone who starts says they know nothing about football, and they’re surprised how much they do know.” She noted many of the basics are the same as soccer or rugby or other sports. The girls attending the camp ran through drills, but what they really got is a sense of what it’s like to be on the field. The cold and the rain that welcomed them on Saturday presented the harshest elements the teams would play in. The difference of football compared to other sports is the size of the team, said Ziegler who said their team has 45 players all competing toward a common goal of winning. “This just shows how big football is. You have 12 coaches out here. We also have a training staff. We have extra volunteers. There’s times when we have close to 90 people on the field. So the girls, when they’re coming out here they get to see what
The Regina Riot stopped in Estevan on Saturday during their tour of the province to promote the team and the opportunities available to young women in football. The group ran drills with a handful of local girls who wanted to see what the Riot was like. it’s like to be part of an organization.” While the competitive nature of the team is important, Ziegler added that being a steward of the community is prized by all Riot members. “Growing the sport for all women is important for us, but it also means we’re out in the community all the time. You’re going to
see us at every event,” she said. Riot players played hockey against the Canadian Special Olympics team and have helped out through flood relief efforts. “Anywhere people are needed and volunteers are needed, you’re going to see the Regina Riot. I think that’s the experience you get. We are part of the community.” The Riot had seven players make the Canadian National team and played at the World Championships in Finland last year. Ziegler said that with the team they have developing now, in three years, they
may send 10 to the next world tournament. “Dominating the Team Canada football team is something we want to do, because we want to prove Saskatchewan has the most amount of talent. We have three years to get girls ready, even girls working in the minor program in Estevan right now. If they work for three years, and they’re able to keep coming to our camps in the spring and the fall, they could be ready for Team Canada in six years. It’s exciting for us to keep putting that calibre of football out for girls.”

OHL hands down 20-game suspension to North Bay’s Baird following incident National TORONTO - The injury list is thinning for Toronto FC. Manager Ryan Nelsen says the only player definitely out for this weekend’s visit by the New England Revolution is midielder Jeremy Hall. Nelsen says England striker Jermain Defoe, centre back Doneil Henry and midfielders Alvaro Rey and Dwayne De Rosario are close to returning although he cautioned it is still early in the week. Star midfielder Michel Bradley, who has been nursing a variety of ailments, is also doing well. Nelsen says it could be the first time in a while that he actually has selection issues rather than injuries making his mind up for him. *** TORONTO - The Ontario Hockey League handed North Bay Battalion right-winger Mike Baird a 20-game suspension Tuesday. The disciplinary action stems from a category one penalty for physical abuse
of an official during a playoff game against the Barrie Colts on April 10. Baird, who was suspended indefinitely after the incident, is ineligible to play in the post-season. The ban includes the six games that the Battalion have played since April 11. North Bay is scheduled to start the opener of its best-of-seven Eastern Conference final on Thursday at Guelph. The series winner will advance to the MasterCard Memorial Cup next month. Baird, a six-foot-two 178-pound native of Cayuga, Ont., had one assist and 27 penalty minutes in 28 games with the Battalion this past season. Putting A Face To Khadr seeks youth All The Names recognition for prison term National TORONTO - Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr turns to Alberta’s top court Wednesday in hopes of having his eightyear prison term recognized as a youth rather than an adult sentence. While the legal arguments are technical, the consequences are important in terms of how the prison system treats Khadr and for his chances of a speedier release. At issue before Alberta’s Court of Appeal is whether Correctional Service of Canada has correctly interpreted the sentence handed down by an American military commission in 2010 after he pleaded guilty to five war crimes committed as a 15-year-old. Eastern Ukraine, with a large Russian-speaking population, was the heartland of support for Viktor Yanukovych, the Russia-friendly president who was ousted in February. An Associated Press photographer said police troops were marshalled outside the seized building in Luhansk.

However, in translating the sentence into Canadian terms following his transfer from Guantanamo in September 2012, Canadian authorities placed him in adult custody. Essentially, Khadr’s lawyer argues he is serving a “global” eight-year term for all five offences to which he pleaded guilty. The government argues he is serving five concurrent eight-year terms for each conviction. PM appoints election observers OTTAWA - The Harper government has hired two agencies with relatively little experience in elections monitoring to organize hundreds of Canadian observers for next month’s Ukrainian presidential vote. The government has hired the Forum of Federations and CUSO International to replace its longtime Ukraine election partner, the non-governmental organization Canadem. The announcement last week caught veteran election observers, as well as Canadem, off guard. The project will see 338 bilateral, short-term Canadian observers sent to the May 25 vote.
The decision comes two years after internal government assessments recommended Canadem as Ottawa’s only option. The government only began consulting with the Forum and CUSO in recent weeks to begin the recruitment of observers. Canadem has been Canada’s main partner in Ukraine election monitoring since it began sending hundreds of observers to the country starting in 2004. Canada’s assignment of such large numbers of bilateral observers — the Liberals did it first in 2004, and the Conservatives have followed suit — has continued despite internal warnings.
