City discussing which streets will remain open to trucks As work continues on the heavy-truck bypass around the northern outskirts of Estevan, the City is also looking to review and revise which roads within city limits are going to continue accepting heavy trucks in the future. Going forward council agreed during their regular meeting on May 5 that allowing fewer trucks on city streets is better than the opposite. City council had previously raised concerns with Fourth Avenue being a designated truck route, and during a review of the routes around the city, council identified three other areas to be reconsidered, Alice Road from Woodlawn Avenue to the west city boundary, Woodlawn Avenue from Alice Road to the south city boundary and Sixth Street from Second Avenue to Kensington Avenue. The report from city engineer Kiflom Weldeab was returned to council last week. Estevan Motor Speedway held its first race night Councillor Kevin Smith raised some concerns over the 2014 season.

Gardeners primed to begin community planting foot beds will provide gardeners with lots of opportunity, noting a 16-square-foot bed can yield more than 500 pounds of produce if done properly. Dubreuil was confident all the beds would be built and the gardeners would have been able to begin planting over the long weekend if they wanted to. “As soon as the beds

As local farmers start getting in the fields for seeding, the newest addition to Estevan’s agricultural landscape, a community garden, is ready for planting. Gardeners and volunteers were out last week preparing the property and building the raised garden beds, as fresh topsoil was dropped off by a pair of local construction companies. Estevan Community Gardens liaison Chantelle Dubreuil said during one of the work bees it was an exciting time for the gardeners, particularly after they had planned work bees for the previous two weeks, and

are able to accept another couple of gardens if others come forward with an interest in gardening this year. “We need to fill that bed,” she said. “We have enough material to make seven more beds, so if we get enough interest before planting season is over, then we’d like to fill those other beds.” She said the group wants to be community stewards as well as leaders in promoting healthy lifestyles that draw from local sources for fresh foods. “Now that we are building a community garden in Estevan, we want the residents of our great community to know that we are committed to creating a wonderful place to come and grow and meet new people within the commu-

nity in a new way. To the residents of the immediate area, we hope that we make you proud with our dedication to promoting a healthy lifestyle and a unique landscape that will be visually appealing.” The gardeners are a diverse group. A church has decided to plant a bed and donate whatever grows to the Salvation Army food bank this summer, while other gardeners young and old are getting their hands dirty with one of the 12-foot by 4-foot beds. “There are also a couple of immigrants who want to learn more about Canadian vegetables, and then we have people who aren’t going to be gardening but want to help,’ Dubreuil said about some of the people cleaning up the property at the work bees, held May 14 and 15. “They’re just people who really want to see this work,” added Dubreuil, who said the positive influence of a community garden extends beyond the participating gardeners and their work. “We want to emphasize the benefits of community gardens to the larger community, including beautifying the area, increasing feelings of safety and community pride, and becoming less reliant on imported foods. Recent studies have also shown that community gardens can also have a positive impact on surrounding property values.” She said the 48-square-

Dubreuil also noted they are raising funds to built a structure to fence in the tank.

Find activity in an inactive summer No matter the weather, with Victoria Day behind us, it’s now summer across Canada. While most of the year is about hustle, bustle and finding efficiencies for the sake of doing things with greater speed and less care, the summer provides us an opportunity to slow down and enjoy a more leisurely pace. It’s the season of lounging, of doing nothing while you do something, because nine or 10 months of being active calls for a little me time of basking in the sunlight after lathering up enough sunblock to turn my skin to mush. There are countless ways to be both active and inactive throughout the summer, and while it’s probably appropriate and healthy to mix things up, I find myself doing much more relaxing than engaging. And I’m apparently a terrible example with my desire to elevate my feet in the backyard and read a book. You may have heard this week that Canada’s children are inactive. The situation is serious,
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers heck, it’s at Defcon 1. The sky is falling on children across the country and this report says they’re too slow and too oblivious to cope. The only country we hands down beat with our D minus grade was Scotland, whose kids were the only ones who flat out failed with an F. That’s because drinking Irn Bru, similar to a mix of Red Bull and Mountain Dew, is considered exercise in the Highlands. Canada’s low activity figures, which include about 9.6 hours of sedentary behavior each day for teens, sounds both unreasonably low and mysteriously attractive.
I’m probably a bad example. I’d rather golf than play soccer or read a book over running a marathon. Thankfully I keep as much distance as possible between Canada’s impressionable youth and myself. I’m not suggesting anyone look to me with a curious eye seeking guidance. They’ll find no guidance, no model to live by. I enjoy slowing things down, chatting on a deck with a cool drink, touring a vineyard, washing my car, sitting around the fire. I prefer activities at the tortoise’s pace rather than the hare’s. In a twist, the report noted the hustle, the bustle and the desire for efficiency may be partially to blame, as our society prizes doing more with less, granting us every opportunity to decide to be stagnant. We just need to be busy, even when life slows down and there is less on our plate. We need to find activity within the inactivity. We need to be doing something even when we’re doing nothing. That’s what summer is for.
Is smaller really any better? It is not something I suspect most in Saskatchewan are aware of, but the United Nations has declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming. There is obviously a chasm forming in farming, with the so-called corporate farm on one side, and the so-called family farm on the other. The problem, or course, is clearly defining which side of the chasm any particular farm falls. It is simple enough if a multinational firm holds title to a farm to toss it on the corporate side, the side which carries with the shadow of doom for many people these days. If the farm is small, and owned by Bill and Margaret who have farmed it for 40 years, it’s a family farm, and is the spin-doctored world we live in that makes what they do somehow better than the corporate held farm down the road. But what happens when a family farm grows, and Uncle Stan, and his two sons take a share of the operation, and the dentist Phil who married Bill and Margaret’s only daughter buys in. He’ll never ride a combine, but he can invest and have a say in that fashion. So the only solution to keeping everyone’s investments and returns straight … Does the farm then become corporate? It gets even more difficult when you look at something like the hog sector where no so long ago communities on the Canadian Prairies built barns. Our example farmers Bill and Margaret invested, yet neither had ever previously raised a hog, and neither would set food in the new barn. Are they farm investors? Or corporate ones? Is there a difference? On an international basis it is easier to grasp why the United Nations holds interest in the idea of family farms. In many countries of the world it is still very small farm holdings operated by a single family unit which produce the food. Following the UN proclamation of the year the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission organized the International Conference ‘Family farming: A Dialogue Towards more sustainable and resilient farming in Europe and the world’.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture highlighted during his opening speech at the Conference that there are 500 million family farmers all over the world feeding humanity, making up 80 per cent of all farms, although again a nice succinct definition of what a family farm is was missing. That said, small farms and the idea of familyoperated generally seem to go hand-in-hand, and while in North America the trend is to massive farms, other areas of the world, including Europe remain much smaller in terms of farm size. Within the European Union average farm size is about 14 hectares, and about 70 per cent are under five ha, and only about three per cent are more than 100 ha. Also speaking at the Conference, U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General José Graziano da Silva stated that: “Family farmers have, over generations, preserved and perfected many practices and technologies that can support agricultural sustainability”. In that regard Da Silva is correct. Many innovations which moved farming forward came from those on small holdings. Seager Wheeler made huge strides in breeding wheat in Saskatchewan in the early 1900s, and was a homesteader. Farming by its nature breeds innovation. Hurdles arise to be overcome, and at times there are no available options, or the money to purchase them if they existed, so farmers have learned to be inventors. Here in North America a North American Dialogue on the United Nation’s ‘2014 Year of Family Farming’ was hosted by L’Union des Producteurs Agricoles (UPA). Canadian and U.S. general farm organizations participated,
including Joan Brady Women’s President of the National Farmers Union. Brady recently sent out a media release on her attendance where she stated, “Part of the Dialogue focused on resilience – our ability to withstand crisis and adapt to ongoing change. More resilient and sustainable natural populations occur in bio-diverse, healthy environments that have more interconnections with communities. Family farmers live where we work; we are embedded in our communities. We work where we live, and thus have a high stake in assuring healthy environments. The current trend toward absentee ownership of large tracts of farmland means those owners will have little if any exposure to any adverse effects of land use.” And this is where the debate about family farms always muddies for me. There seems an assumption because the owner isn’t getting his hands dirty seeding the crop that he will automatically not care about the long term viability of the farm. And hand-in-hand, whoever is hired to do the work will care little for the farm either. That seems a very questionable assumption to make, but it generally seems to be a starting point. And then there is the associated issue that corporate farms will use more crop protection products, adopt genetic modified crops more quickly, and fertilize more to boost production. I would suggest that is true, since larger holdings have more assets to leverage input costs, but I am not about to suggest going down the road to higher production is wrong. A lot of family farm supporters seem to suggest it is far from the deal though. In the end there is no doubt small holdings farms operated by a single family remain important to localized food production in most countries of the world. But for large grain exporting countries such as Canada, those small farms have been disappearing since the end of the First World War, and when a trend is so long entrenched, it is for a reason. Bigger has been found to be better here, and while I applaud the UN for keeping talk of family farms around the world at the forefront, we have likely outgrown that side of farming.

Deal reached to prevent closing Leamington Heinz plant National LEAMINGTON, Ont. - Food giant Heinz says a deal to prevent closing a food processing plant that’s a key part of the town’s economy is now complete, saving at least 250 jobs. The H.J. Heinz Co. said Wednesday that Highbury Canco will take over operating the 105-year-old plant in Leamington, Ont. on June 27. “We are pleased that Canco will manufacture some of Canada’s favourite products, including Heinz Tomato Juice, Heinz Beans, and Heinz canned pastas in the years to come,” Michael Mullen, senior vice-president
of corporate and government affairs at H. J. Heinz Company, said in a statement. Heinz’s planned closure of the plant would have put close to 800 full-time employees out of work and affected employment for about 500 seasonal workers. Highbury Canco has said it would hire about 250 people, plus additional seasonal workers if the deal went through. “Now that the deal has concluded, the Highbury Canco Corporation is fully focused on establishing a strong production base in Leamington for Heinz and further strengthening our own
brand,” said Pradeep Sood, director of Highbury Canco. The two companies have not placed a dollar value on the deal. Highbury Canco is made up of unnamed investors who came together to form a corporation for the deal. SASKATOON - The board of governors at the University of Saskatchewan says it needs more time to consider its leadership following a controversy over a professor who was fired for speaking out about budget cuts. The school’s provost, Brett Fairbairn, resigned shortly before an emergency
meeting of the board Monday night. Board members later left the meeting without making any decisions. The board is to meet again next week. Robert Buckingham was removed as executive director
of the School of Public Health and escorted off campus last week after writing a letter to the government and Opposition New Democrats about an overhaul at the university. The school later backtracked and offered Buckingham back his tenure position,
although it said he wouldn’t be reinstated as director. Board chair Susan Milburn said in a statement early Tuesday that its members are aware of the public outcry over Buckingham’s firing and discussed its leadership “in depth.”

The local MS Walk to be held May 25 at the Estevan Leisure Centre received a boost to their fundraising efforts last week as Mike Smith from Sobeys, donated $2,305 of gift cards to the MS Society, handing them off to local walk co-ordinator Sherry Kjersem.
Looming Donation
Students at Hillcrest School started a looming club, seeking to sell homemade bracelets and charms in order to raise money for the Estevan Humane Society. The group donated $200 to the animal shelter last week, as students, Emmey, Chloe, Brenna, Kadence, Brandi, Tamsen, Emily, Ava and Marissa wished to contribute to the local organization.
Special Olympics
A day of track and field activities at Estevan Comprehensive School was held May 16 with athletes from across southeast Saskatchewan. Carlyle’s Aydon Redwood takes a leap during the long jump competition.

Long term employee at Turnbull Excavating recognized
Ed Turnbull presents Glen Buettner with award for 25 years of employment
Turnbull Excavating offers full construction services
“25 years is a big deal,” said David Mack, Operations Manager of Turnbull Excavating as he opened up the presentation for the evening. On May 7, 2014 Ed Turnbull along with his staff and families celebrated a major milestone for the company.
Long-term employee Glen Buettner marked his 25th year of employment with the company. Glen started his career with Turnbull Excavating on May 1, 1989. He drove truck and ran loader. He quickly became the primary basement digger and was the best. He could do it quickly
and it was perfectly square and straight with his case 621 loader. As the company expanded, Glen was a key player. He picked up their first cement mixer, he spearheaded their safety division and was there for the expansion into water and sewer and wore many hats. He does
whatever needs to be done from labourer, operator, driver, foreman, and now supervisor. Ed is very proud to have Glen work with him and be his friend. To thank him for his years of dedication, loyalty and hard work, Ed presented him with a brand new Can-Am Commander XT.
