Crude-filled tanker cars derail By Chad Saxon editor@estevanmercury.ca

Estevan’s emergency services personnel, and residents, were able to breath a Cont. Circulation - 9,239 www.estevanmercury.ca Friday, May 30 2014 sigh of relief Thursday after a train derailment was resolved without major incident or injury. The derailment, which occurred Thursday at around 11 a.m., saw four tanker cars filled with crude oil jump the tracks just north of the Devonian Industrial Subdivision. Although the worst was feared in the immediate aftermath, none of the tanker cars ruptured during the derailment, which occurred on a low speed section of track near CP’s oil transloading Four tanker cars, each filled with crude oil, derailed Thursday morning in Estevan. Jeers to the big brand name store advertising their garden centre is open yet the front of the property is invaded with dandelions. Please go to your garden centre and deal with this situation. It is very unsightly.

Cheers to Stuart at the local eye-care clinic who is always so pleasant and helpful.

Jeers to how long it takes to repair pavement after a sewer line problem. It’s ridiculous how taxpayers have to live in clouds of dust when we pay taxes for road maintenance.

Cheers to the Drewitz School of Dance for a lovely evening of entertainment. The dancing, the costumes and the music were spectacular. We loved the format — not a lot of talking but keeping the program moving along quickly and smoothly. Great job done! Cheers to the tiny girl who watched the dancers on stage and then did her own interpretation in the aisle. She warmed our hearts.

Community stewardship encouraged at Day of Caring By Jordan Baker editor@estevanmercury.ca

Volunteers across Estevan next week will once again show just how much they care about helping others in the Energy City. United Way Estevan is hosting its seventh annual Day of Caring June 4, as the local group calls for volunteers across the city to spend their time helping complete projects both big and small for those who can’t complete the work themselves. United Way Estevan President Doug McDavid said, “It just shows you people care about each other in the community and we’re willing to help out. “It gives you a good sense of helping the community and you get to meet people. They seem so appreciative,” he said, noting for the last few years he has attended to seniors’ homes and helped complete maintenance work around the houses. “What I’ve done is helped them set up their yards for spring. The appreciation they show and hearing how thankful they are is where you get that good feeling inside.” The 2014 Day of Caring will cover 10 projects around the city, including work at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home and a daycare. “It helps the people who can’t help themselves as much right now,” said McDavid. Laura Bjarnason, United Way Estevan executive director, said the event is an opportunity to find eager volunteers across the city and direct them to where their efforts may be most needed. “We take everybody and mobilize various members of the community who volunteer, and they complete meaningful projects

United Way Estevan’s Day of Caring sends community volunteers out across the city to complete projects around residences. for someone you know,” said Bjarnason, who noted this year’s projects are fairly large. There may be more projects registered prior to the June 4 event, and individuals or organizations may register a project until May 28, though some late entries may be accepted. With 50 volunteers at their disposable thus far, the United Way is keeping its open invitation for further volunteers up until the day of the event. “A lot of businesses have stepped up and sent people,” she said. “It started with very small projects and a very small number of people,” said Bjarnason. “They just wanted to do something for the community. There were a couple of people they knew who needed help. It has grown now into something very well

known and accepted in the community.” “When I was involved with the first one, we went to the daycare and set up their playground area,” said McDavid, noting the first year just saw United Way board members getting involved. It was later opened to the community for volunteers. “As every year has gone by, it really has blossomed into more of a community event.” He added that with the increase in volunteers, the projects they complete have grown in size and scope as well. “Every year it seems to get a little bigger,” said McDavid. “We do a lot of landscaping and outside work. We have some fences to finish up for some people and some decks we’re going to refinish for them.

At the Nursing Homes, we always love to do it, we go and do flower beds and weeding, raking, and outside windows, which are really tough for the staff to do because it’s so time-consuming,” noted Bjarnason. She said windows and eavestroughs are very popular jobs for the Caring Crews. “There are a lot of seniors coming forward and people in the community who care about them, coming forward. A lot of them live in condos and we wash the outside of their windows. We’re doing a lot of gazebos this year, even planting a few garden items for a nursing home, so potatoes, tomatoes, stuff like that.” Volunteers will work either from 9 to noon or from 1 to 4 p.m. and in between, there will be a community barbecue held in the parking lot of the Alliance Church with volunteers and the community welcome to enjoy their midday meal. “If people come we won’t turn them away, but it would be great to have the volunteers (ahead of time) because then we can match up the projects with the volunteers, and get the groups with the bigger projects, and two people could do a smaller project, “ said Bjarnason. “People think it’s for seniors only, but it’s not. It’s for anybody out there who needs help. That’s why volunteers are coming forward. It’s just things that can’t get done (alone). That’s what the day is, it’s helping hands,” she said. For those interested in registering a project, they may get hold of the United Way either by calling, e-mailing, or faxing and checking their website www.unitedwayofestevan. com

Change is an integral and expected part of our lives, but its inevitability doesn’t make it any less unsettling and scary. It’s a novel pursuit to embrace the evolution in our day-to-day worlds. Change keeps our days fresh, adding a flavor of unpredictability to our palettes. It makes the stale new again, ensuring we stay sharp of mind and sound of wit. However much as I wish to crave that uncertainty, there is still an annoying part of me that dreads anything new, because that voice reasons that newer doesn’t mean better, and it may mean something much, much worse. That’s the dilemma. That’s what keeps us in our homes at night, fearful of what we might encounter out on the mean streets. We make our homes predictable, but we don’t get to make the outdoors. The rest of the world makes itself without our input. That fear of change makes us do strange things and causes a lot of unnecessary anxiety. It crops up when we move, start a new job or city council starts talking about our garbage being picked up in a different place than it has previously been retrieved. Sometimes we see change as a major inconvenience, while other times, like with new jobs and moving to new cities, it make us seriously

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers doubt the choices we’ve made in life. I’m not the only one who has had a sleepless night concerned about all the things that could go wrong with the wonderful and horrible thing called change. It’s the self-doubt that sometimes accompanies it that is so toxic. And the rest of us aren’t very good at comforting someone who is undergoing a major alteration of course. We summon the greatest wisdom from within the depths of our souls and simply tell them, “Well, change is good.” Sure, it’s good, except when it isn’t. There is no way to know what is good before it happens. What we really mean is that if you fall flat on your face, then at least you tried. If it isn’t good and things get worse, then at least you’ll learn life lessons and you’ll build character. While we don’t all suffer from Metathesiophobia, a fear of change, we’re still connected by some discomfort with uncertainties. I moved to Estevan from Ontario in

2010, unaware of what would come in the next three and a half years. Maybe I’d get a steady job and have the opportunity to write words and ideas, both other peoples’ and my own. Or maybe I’d fall flat on my face and after a month be told to please quietly leave and never darken a doorstep in Estevan ever again. Things have worked out well enough, and have very recently taken on a larger role as an editor with the Mercury, following the departure of Chad Saxon. It provides a new opportunity and set of adventures for Chad and for me, but once again feelings of self-doubt and uncertainty flutter to the surface amidst this less-than-tidal change. We are our own worst enemies when it comes to planting seeds that grow into an immense fear of failure in our minds. Things don’t need to be very different, they just need to be different enough for us to question our place within the world. We’re so often caught up in our worlds, not realizing that fear of change is something we all deal with on a regular and at times daily basis, but people have always said there is comfort in numbers. When it comes to reluctantly accepting the new things thrown our way, we aren’t alone. There are always others dealing with change with as much fear as the rest of us.

Farming is part of our future plan When you have written a weekly opinion column on agriculture for more than a quarter of a century, you learn inspiration can come from some rather unusual places. That said, I was still surprised when I was sitting at the recent Yorkton Film Festival Golden Sheaf Awards Gala and found a moment of inspiration for a farm column. It was particularly surprising since the film had zero to do with farming. Oil Sands Karaoke by Shore Films took the Golden Sheaf for Documentary Science/Nature/Technology and later the award for Director - Non-Fiction for Charles Wilkinson. In accepting the second award, Wilkinson talked about having taken a walk in Yorkton during his stay at the Festival. He said he happened upon a yard sale where he found an old steelrunner sled, which he wished he could have taken home with him. At the same sale was a box of mason jars and a well-used violin. Wilkinson related how he realized

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist each of the items had held an importance to the family over the years. I understand that. A sled is not kept without memories. Jars are part of our more self-sufficient past, and a well-used violin speaks to it having been played and played and then preserved. Wilkinson said the items spoke to him of a way of life here in Saskatchewan, one he said we need to be prepared to safeguard. Wilkinson said Saskatchewan, and even the local area, seem poised on an explosion of oil and gas exploration and development, and he said we need to manage such development to be able to hold on to what has been important here for years. It was a not so subtle message that

the tar sands project in Northern Alberta, upon which his film is based, was not so-well managed. We have all heard the stories of near uncontrolled growth associated with the tar sands. It is a project of massive economic importance, but one with its share of warts, too. Certainly in Saskatchewan we have been the most agrarian-based provincial economy in Canada. That has not always been the best thing in terms of a strong provincial economy. We might be feeding the world, but for many years farmers have done so at little or no profit. A more diverse economy is good news for Saskatchewan, and a big part of that diversification is, and will continue to be oil and gas. But we must also be careful to remember our province exists because of agriculture, and the land base will ensure it remains an integral part of our future. Anytime we plan for our future, farming and those who farm should be an integral part of the planning process and of the vision for tomorrow.

Aboriginal community remains split on federal bill National OTTAWA - The first sign that common ground on controversial changes to First Nations education would be hard to find came early Tuesday when chiefs at a special meeting couldn’t even agree on an agenda for the day. The aboriginal community is so split over the Harper government’s education bill that something seemingly as innocuous as the schedule became a sticking point. The chiefs eventually opted to discuss First Nations education before deciding how to choose a new leader to replace Shawn Atleo, who quit this month as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. But the brief impasse spoke to the significant obstacle facing both the assembly and the governing Conservatives: getting hundreds of aboriginal communities in Canada to agree on an issue as deeply personal as how their children are educated. Quebec and Labrador Regional Chief Ghislain Picard, who has been the assembly’s spokesman since Atleo resigned, urged the aboriginal leaders gathered in at a downtown Ottawa hotel to take a unified stance,

one way or another. “The facts are that we have a bill before the House, which has been shelved by the minister ... so that’s where I feel we need to find a way to come together,” Picard said. Bill Erasmus, the Dene National Chief and AFN’s regional chief for the Northwest Territories, said it’s not fair to ask the country’s hundreds of First Nations to all agree on such a major issue. “It’s the dilemma that Canada has to understand,” he said. OTTAWA - The federal government says it is firing the suspended CEO of Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. after a report tabled today in the House of Commons concluded that he breached the Crown agency’s code of conduct by hiring four people with ties to the Conservative party. Rob Moore, the minister of state for Enterprise Cape Breton Corp., says he has taken steps to terminate John Lynn’s employment following the report by the federal integrity commissioner. In his report, Mario Dion said Lynn hired four people in 2009-10 without showing that there was a formal hiring process or that their appointments were

based on merit. Lynn could not immediately be reached for comment. Dion’s report says without a comprehensive explanation from Lynn, the commissioner determined there was an element of deliberateness to his actions that could reasonably be expected to create a perception of patronage within the federal public sector. Dion says in the report that while Lynn’s appointment decisions were inconsistent with good governance standards, they did not amount to gross mismanagement nor did they affect the ability of Enterprise Cape Breton to carry out its mandate to promote development in that region. Lynn was named CEO of Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. in May 2008, and had previously been a long-serving executive with Sobeys. International STAVANGER, Norway - Greenpeace says activists have boarded two offshore drilling rigs in a protest against oil and gas exploration in Arctic waters. Juha Aromaa, a spokesman for the environmental group, says 15 activists boarded a rig operated by the Norwegian energy company

Statoil 175 kilometres off the Bear Island nature reserve early Tuesday without encountering any resistance from the crew. Statoil was given the green light to drill in the northern part of the Barents Sea late Monday. The rig had been on a government-ordered hiatus pending a complaint from Greenpeace. Also, the group said 30 activists in the Dutch port of Ijmuiden on Tuesday boarded a rig contracted by Russia’s Gazprom to drill in the Pechora Sea. Greenpeace said they were removed after five hours. *** WA S H I N G TO N President Barack Obama will seek to keep 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan after the war formally ends later this year and then will withdraw most of those forces by 2016, senior administration officials said Tuesday. Obama’s decision is largely in line with what military commanders have been seeking and will allow the president to fully end the American-led military effort by the time he leaves office. The two-year plan is contingent on the Afghan government signing a bilateral security agreement

with the U.S. While current Afghan President Hamid Karzai has declined to sign the agreement, U.S. officials are confident that either of the candidates seeking to replace him would give his approval. The plan calls for the U.S. military to draw down from its current force of 32,000 to 9,800 by the start of next year. Those troops would be dispatched throughout Afghanistan and focus on counterterrorism

missions and training Afghan security forces. They would not be engaged in combat missions. Over the course of next year, the number of troops would be cut in half and consolidated in the capital of Kabul and at Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. base in Afghanistan. Those remaining forces would largely be withdrawn by the end of 2016, with fewer than 1,000 remaining behind to staff a security office in Kabul.

CFL labour talks resumed Thursday morning National TORONTO - The CFL and its players are going into overtime in their collective bargaining talks. After spending more than 12 hours in meetings together and separately Wednesday, the two sides agreed to reconvene Thursday at an airport hotel. “It has been a long day of meetings,” CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said. “We’re going to resume (Thursday) morning, which is a good thing.” It’s certainly a far cry from what happened the last time the CFL and its players met. On May 21, they gathered for roughly 10 minutes as the league informed the CFL Players’ Association it was rejecting its latest offer before going public with the details of its

last proposal to the union. But there was no quick end to Wednesday’s session. The league and players held multiple face-toface sessions but also spent a lot of time separately, with a conciliation officer being seen going from one party to the other. It was the first time that news of a conciliation officer being involved in talks surfaced. Also, Cohon attended the sessions with the CFL’s bargaining unit, which also consisted of chief operation officer Michael Copeland, Saskatchewan Roughriders president Jim Hopson, Calgary Stampeders president Ken King, and CFL legal counsel Steve Shamie. The CFLPA’s negotiating team was made up of president Scott Flory,

vice-presidents Marwan Hage and Jeff Keeping, treasurer Brian Ramsay and legal counsel Ed Molstad. PARIS - Milos Raonic bounced back from a troublesome first match and Eugenie Bouchard overcame a worrying first set as Canada’s top singles tennis players drew on mental toughness to advance to the third round of the French Open. Bouchard managed a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 come-frombehind win over German Julia Goerges on Wednesday, while eighth-seeded Raonic beat Czech Jiri Vesely 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-1 to reach the third round for a third consecutive year. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., came back from a break down in the first set and won the hour-long

opener in a tiebreak before taking control of the match. Raonic said he is noticing signs of improvement on court after struggling somewhat in his opening match, a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win over Australian qualifier Nick Kyrgios. International TAMPA, Fla. - Malcolm Glazer, the self-made billionaire who led the takeover of English soccer’s Manchester United and owned the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died. He was 85. The Bucs said Glazer died Wednesday. The reclusive Palm Beach businessman had been in failing health since April 2006 when a pair of strokes left him with impaired speech and limited

mobility in his right arm and leg. Glazer raised his profile in 2005 with a $1.47 billion purchase of Manchester United that was bitterly opposed by fans of one of the world’s richest soccer clubs. Before that, his unobtrusive management style helped transform the Bucs from a laughingstock into a model franchise that in 2003 won the Super Bowl 48-21 over the Oakland Raiders. PARIS - Wind was whipping, rain was falling, and thick grey clouds overhead were foreboding as Serena Williams double-faulted, then raised her hands in despair and wailed, “I can’t serve!” As if to prove the point, Williams double-faulted again moments later, before pushing a routine backhand wide to get broken at love. Truth is, the French Open’s defending champion couldn’t do much properly on this particular afternoon, absorbing the

most lopsided loss of her 288-match Grand Slam career. Unable to figure out how to get herself going or counter her unheralded opponent’s aggressive game, Williams was beaten 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday by 35thranked Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the second round. “Nothing really worked,” said Williams, whose older sister Venus also lost. “I don’t know anything that actually worked.” Ever since last week’s draw, there was talk about a possible all-Williams match in the third round, which would have been their first Grand Slam meeting since the 2009 Wimbledon final. So much for that: Exactly one minute before Serena’s match began on Court Suzanne Lenglen, the 29th-seeded Venus’ 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat against 56th-ranked Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia wrapped up in the main stadium.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2014

Our Past HOLLYWOOD -- Jimmy Fallon took over for Jay Leno, Seth Meyers took over for Fallon, Stephen Colbert is taking over for David Letterman and now Craig Ferguson has announced he’s leaving the “Late, Late Show.” In Ferguson’s last contract, he was given first refusal of Letterman’s job or a hefty six-figure settlement, but when Ferguson announced he’d be hosting and producing the syndicated game show “The Celebrity Name Game,” we knew something was up. “After 10 years I felt I was done,” Ferguson said. He had told CBS, before he knew Letterman was leaving, that he wanted to go. Ferguson added, “I wanted to move on before the work became a chore.” Another reason for leaving might have been the decline in his show’s ratings since Seth Meyers’ “Late Night” debut. *** Bryan Cranston won three Emmys for Best Actor in “Breaking Bad” (2008-10) and as producer of “Breaking Bad” in 2013. Now he’s received a Best Actor Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Lyndon Johnson on Broadway for “All The Way,” against “Monk’s” Tony Shalhoub (for “Act One”). “Cagney & Lacey’s” Tyne Daly (for “Mother’s and Sons”) is pitted against “Bonnie and Clyde” Oscar-winner Estelle Parsons (for “The Velocity of Autumn”). Other nods went to “How I Met Your Mother” star Neil Patrick Harris for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” and Idina Menzel (who sang “Let It

Go” from “Frozen”) for “If/ Then.” The Tonys will air June 8 on CBS from Radio City Music Hall. *** J.J. Abrams has cast his new “Star Wars” film. John Boyega, recurring on “24: Live Another Day,” will be a Jedi; Daisy Ridley, who guested on “Mr. Selfridge,” will be the daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia. Others include Adam Driver, a Darth Vader-ish character, did “HBO’s “Girls”; Oscar Isaac, Hans Solo-ish, was in “Inside Llewyn Davies”; plus Andy Serkis of “Lord of the Rings” and “Rise/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” and veteran actor Max Von Sydow. You also can expect cameos from Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Ken Baker. *** Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will produce their third Oscar show on Feb. 22. They’ve also committed to a live three-hour production of “Grease” for Fox in 2015, as well as their live production of “Peter Pan” for NBC in December and a big-screen production of “Pippin” for the Weinstein Co. Judge Judy, who has had the No. 1-rated first-run syndicated daytime show for the past three years, is going to primetime. CBS will air a one-hour special May 20, following her from a judge in a New York court to “Judge Judy.” If you don’t watch it, you’ll be in contempt of court! (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

New exhibit shows off prizes from the hunt By Jordan Baker editor@estevanmercury.ca

The latest art installation in Estevan’s main gallery explores the relationship between man and nature as well as providing how-to instruction on skinning a couch. The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum’s exhibit, Hide, opened with an artists’ reception on May 23 and will run throughout the summer until Aug. 23, featuring the works of Jamie Wright and David Diviney. Wright, an artist originally from rural Alberta, was on hand during the Friday evening reception to shed some light to about 50 people in attendance on how he came to hunt couches. “I really like taxidermy and hunting and early naturalist works, when they would go out, hunt lots of animals and then display them beautifully. That’s where it comes from, playing and having fun with that in a really bizarre way, hunting couches instead of hunting real animals,” said Wright, who said it’s easier to hunt furniture than a living creature. Growing up in a rural

area, he said he never did many of the activities enjoyed by others in those remote settings. “I really disagreed with hunting (while) growing up. I was a vegetarian for 15 years. I just sort of recently came about to think (hunting) is not so bad actually. It’s kind of interesting. It’s really its own sort of culture as well and valuable for that.” Wright’s work revolves around nature and the environment and said when he thinks about those topics he tends to recall images of waste and adaptation, but found himself particularly drawn to the relationship between hunter and prey. “All of this is because I wanted to hunt something, but I knew that I couldn’t hunt an animal. I was walking around a city that discarded a lot of couches, and it seemed like a fun thing to hunt down a couch instead,” said Wright. So the beginnings of couch hunting began. He noted the leather couch skin itself is a product of an animal, so as he hunts the couches and the creature that supplied the skin is once again alive as his target.

Jamie Wright After finding the couch on the shore, he searched alleys in Glasgow, Scotland where he was living at the time. “I sanitized the whole thing. My hunting became less about dominating nature or eating it, and more about finding things that

vestiges of its old use, if it’s an old and weathered couch with rips and stains, that’s always quite fun. If it’s found in a bizarre location, that’s excellent. “The first couch I found was on the shore of the ocean. I haven’t quite found one as naturally placed as that.” The one he found on the shore, he skinned in place, removing the leathery hide from its man made skeleton. “I then left the carcass to rot, as it were. Other ones, I’ve dragged back and thrown out or burned. That’s also a reward, making a large fire,” Wright added. “It was about creating an environment that I remembered or that I imagined and wanted to play around in for awhile. As I became more comfortable with them, I began to think about my day-to-day wanderings or my day-to-day rhythms. The game started to evolve as I thought about how I could play in that nature and be a bit more serious.” Estevan’s Evelyn Johnson was also at the gallery for the reception. Her exhibit, Hooked, runs from May 1 to June 21 in the project space. David Diviney will attend the EAGM on July 31 for an artist’s talk.

are hard to find and dealing with them in difficult ways,” Wright said about the representations of hunting in his work. “It takes quite a lot to find the couches. They’re very particular as they have to be a leather or a pleather couch. Typically they’re found in nature or urban centres, but lately I’ve had to find them on things like

Kijiji or Craigslist or eBay,” he said. “It’s really quite difficult to skin the darn things.” After he carves out some skins, Wright uses them as a canvas for his drawings. “Getting to draw something I like to look at is a wonderful reward or getting to make a bearskin rug. That’s a fantastic reward,” he said, as hunters are able to display their rewards from the hunt through hides and antlers. He displays his reward through art. He said he was primarily a drawer but began making paper sculptures and eventually went further to create sculpture in a taxidermist style. “I just went headlong in and hoped for the best. You have to play a lot to make it work. You have to experiment. Sometimes it will be a success, sometimes it won’t.” Among the other works in the exhibit is a six-minute video of Wright skinning a couch. What makes a couch an attractive candidate for Wright’s hunting? “I’m starting to think more of a nice designed couch, something a bit more expensive than I’ve usually found. If it can have some

• You might be surprised to learn that the hamburger didn’t originate in the United States. In fact, it was early Turkic people called the Tatars who first came up with the idea. When they had low-quality beef, they discovered that shredding it and patting it back together improved the flavor and texture. • If for some reason you have a hankering to see the world’s biggest tire, you’ll need to head to Detroit (fittingly, I suppose). Located near the Detroit Metro Airport, the 80-foot Uniroyal tire weighs in at a whopping 12 tons. This attraction was created for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, where it served not only as an advertisement for the Uniroyal brand, but also as a Ferris wheel for the entertainment of attendees. In 1998, the com-

pany created the world’s largest nail -- measuring 11 feet long and weighing 250 pounds -- and used it to pierce the giant tire. It was another advertising stunt, of course; this time to promote Uniroyal’s puncture-resistant tire. • If you’re like the average American, you will eat between 25 and 30 pounds of apples this year. • Some researchers believe that those who drink large quantities of coffee on a daily basis are selfmedicating for depression. • There is a species of frog found in Australia

with an odd method of reproduction. It lays eggs like other frogs, but this particular frog keeps the eggs in its stomach, hatching them internally. When the baby frogs are fully developed, they emerge into the world via the adult frog’s mouth. *** • Thought for the Day: “Sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people.” -- Elizabeth Green (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2014

North Portal happenings Correspondent Betty Baniulis Pat and Trish Barker recently returned from a three-week trip to Turkey where they visited Instanbul and several other cities, as well as some of the historical sites. Highlights of the trip were a visit to the Galipolli landing areas and war memorial and a balloon ride over Cappadocia.

Duncan Milne arrived on May 24 from Victoria, B.C. to visit his mother at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home and to visit family and friends in North Portal. A baby shower was held at the home of Amanda Pukas for Kaydon Anne Pukas, born April 21 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, daughter of Ashley and Shelly Pukas. She is a grand-

daughter of Pat and Isobel Pukas. Visiting Joe and Betty Baniulis and Gen and Margaret Baniulis on May 21 was Scott Gregor of Sherwood Park, Alberta. Bridge was held on May 19 at Jo-Anne Schldrup’s home in Portal with two tables. High honours went to Dorothy Fuchs and second high honours to Brenda Schindel.

Prayers were held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Estevan, with Doug Third officiating. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Estevan, by Rev. Gerry Bauche. Interment followed at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens, Estevan. Those wishing to make

Benjamin “Thomas” East 1929 – 2014 The family of Tom East sadly announces his passing at the Regina General Hospital on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the age of 85 years. He was born March 12, 1929 and recently celebrated his 85 birthday at home in Estevan. In recent years he had shown great resolve and strength by overcoming several debilitating illnesses including cancers and West Nile Virus. Tom grew up near Alameda and moved to Dalesboro District located 11 miles north of Alameda when he was age 15. He farmed there with his father and brothers but his father passed away suddenly in 1950. Tom married Gwen Povey in 1951 and they eventually purchased a homestead 6 miles North of Alameda in 1955. They moved a small house onto the property and planted trees for a

shelter belt. The year 1961 was a terrible drought year and also that year just before Christmas was a bad house fire and the interior destroyed. That house was refurbished with help of family and friends. The family continued to grow, crops were good and cattle were raised. A new and bigger house was built in 1972 and many family gatherings and parties were held. The family was blessed with music making the occasions and gatherings enjoyable and cementing many cherished memories. Tom enjoyed good friends and good times curling, camping, boating, fishing, golfing and he was also an active Knight of Columbus member for a number of years. He was a cunning card player and honed his shark like skills on the family pool table (not located far from the basement bar). He truly enjoyed the farm lifestyle and is where he taught all his grandchildren to drive, bait a hook and fillet a fish. He would never refuse to help a friend, neighbor or family member. Tom had a great sense of humour, was fond of teasing, had an infectious laugh and will be sorely missed. Tom’s memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 62 years, Gwen East of Estevan; son Darryl (Leah) East of Calgary and family: Tara (Colin) Baker of Calgary and Robyn East (A.J. Tocco)
