Fiction provides insight for all readers By Jordan Baker Of the Southeast Trader Express The Comp’s annual book festival encouraged students to explore their humanity in literature. Paul Wilson, winner of the Saskatchewan Book Award for poetry in 2014, was among the writers who stopped at the Estevan Comprehensive School May 2 to conduct readings and speak with students about the role of books in our lives. Wilson spoke to students about his life as a writer and particularly his latest book of poetry, 2013’s The Invisible Library, which just two weeks ago won the 2014 Saskatchewan Book Award for Poetry. The book was inspired by, and takes its name from, the literature that is only referred to in other works. It pays homage to the wonder of all things unwritten, unread and unimagined. The poetry in the book is written to everyone who has a role in ensuring literature is perpetual: the antiquarian, the librarian, the typographer and the reader. “This one is hard to let go of because it is so very close to myself,” Wilson told the Southeast Trader Express. “As a writer and publisher, this is a collection of poems about books.” As managing editor at Hagios Press in Regina, Wilson said it was in 2008, as e-readers really began to immerse themselves in our culture that predictions for the death of the book were again levied. “People started saying books are on the way out, and I couldn’t understand how someone could say that a technology that was 500 years old would soon become archaic. It got me thinking creatively. Partly anger and partly defiance

be pirates of language.’” He gave students word samples, and they wrote sentences using the words. “So they pirated those words, and they couldn’t stop writing. Writing begins in the mind and it stops in the mind. If we think that writing is hard, then we won’t write. If we think it’s fun and easy (we can). It’s all about our attitudes toward language.” Wilson sees books not as stories about characters or other people but about all of us and about the

reader, and that provides some added weight to every written work. “Those characters we identify with because they are us. When I write ‘I’ in my work, I mean ‘you.’ That’s the same with all writing. The potential is there to make that transference and understand that you have a stake in reading that story because it’s about you as well as the character. Unless it’s about aliens,” he said, quickly thinking, before adding, “and even then, it’s about you.”

Money Problems?

Marla Adams, CA, CIRP Trustee in Bankruptcy

Saskatchewan author and poet Paul Wilson appeared at the Estevan Comprehensive School as part of the school’s annual Book Festival Day last week to talk about what we learn form stories and how they shape our lives. led me to write the book,” said Wilson with a chuckle. “No one would say it today. It seemed inconceivable to me then but I think it’s inconceivable to everybody now because e-books have taken about 10 to 15 per cent of the market, and they’re probably not going to take any more because there’s not an economic model for them.” But it will take more than finding a manageable economic model for our culture to completely convert to digital reading, as he pointed to the relationships of nostalgia and familiarity that we have with turning a physical page. “We don’t maybe think about it every day, but we really shape the ideas of the world through the imagination. Where do we develop our imagination? Through reading books,” he said. “So the two are inextricably linked.” He said there are many new avenues we have created to explore creative

thought but many remain passive, not engaging with the user the way a book does. “We know now, there have been lots of studies about it, that reading novels and reading poetry that does something to the brain. It’s kind of a game changer for children of all ages, and when they don’t have that connection with the imagination, which supports all other kinds of academic endeavours, then they’re losing something. “Stories are complex. To be able to traverse that complexity is really important because it’s problem solving,” added Wilson, noted all stories are about presenting the reader with a dilemma that must be resolved. “All novels and poems present tensions that have to be resolved for the reader. The writer has to, in their own way, come to terms with them, but what’s great about reading and books is that then the reader has to

deal with it.” There isn’t one answer to solving a story, whether it’s about rescuing the damsel from the dragon or a character reconciling a broken family, and that’s something Wilson loves about stories. “They create this way of imagining a world and it’s why people say some books changed their lives, because they virtually do in the sense that they change the way we see the world, which is really powerful. They transform people.” When he approaches young readers and students as he did last week, he wants to encourage them to explore their imaginations. “(They should be) encouraged to see themselves as not so much writers but pirates of language. I like that term because I was here two years ago doing some workshops and kids would say, ‘I can’t write. I’m not a creative person,’ and I said, ‘We’re not going to write, we’re just going to

Mother’s Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate all things Mom as we reflect on all her courage and insanity. It’s the one time every year, except for maybe her birthday, where we acknowledge that we never meant all the things we have said to her over the past year. It’s the day where we deviate from our usual attitude toward our motherly figures — staring at our feet and kicking the dust until her unblinking eyes make us so guilty we frustratingly admit it: “Yes, of course, I love you, Mom. Just stop looking at me.” Once an obligation, I’ve found myself enjoying finding a way to dote upon my mother more each year. I’m notoriously terrible at selecting gifts for friends and family, but I think I do pretty well to find something both thoughtful and useful on Mother’s Day, even though my mother is probably lying through her teeth every time she says thanks through her porcelain doll smile. Sure Mother’s Day is a bit of an overcommercialized affair as even the woman who founded the holiday in the U.S. grew to despise what it became: a day for corporations to make lots of money on the basis that if you don’t spend your allowance on mom how can you possibly show her love. No, it isn’t a day in which we need

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers to break the bank, but it does give us an opportunity to recognize the role our mothers played in shaping our lives and moulding us into the upstanding citizens we are today. My mom sacrificed a lot for me and even more for her four other children. She made choices that I never would have even considered, and neither would my sisters, and it led to a rowdy family of five children. At one point in all of our early years, four of us were under six years of age. That’s a pretty healthy mix of bravery and outright stupidity, but here we all are. We escaped unscathed, though my mother’s sense of humour was irreparably damaged. She has done so much for us, and yet, all we’ve done is destroy her funny bone. I always thought my mom just didn’t have the capacity to laugh at the things that everyone else finds funny, but the

more women I know who have children, the more I find that they, too, find the same things funny. It mostly involves young children doing something, anything really, and I call it mom humour. When I’ve spoken to newer mothers about it, I’ve heard they didn’t think it would happen to them or they didn’t realize how fast it would set in. Hearing these testimonials I’ve learned to overlook the times my mom has burst out laughing at something silly or immature while everyone else in the room, mostly my siblings, just stare, wondering if after raising five kids, she has any sanity left at all. Perhaps this is the time she has finally cracked, and we’ll have to whisk her off to the nuthouse. However we celebrate Mother’s Day, it’s an opportunity to reflect on our own lives and how we are a product of a single woman’s care and affection. While saying “Happy Mother’s Day,” we can look at where we are and what we’ve done. When we do that, we always realize how much we really owe to the person who tied our shoes and told us to stay away from electrical outlets. Thinking about the course my mother set me upon makes me want to go in for an extra hug to say thank you.

Farmers dealing with multiple pressures It has become a much-heard comment about farmers that their land is the most important aspect of the operation. That may seem like an obvious statement, but it at times seems to be lost on those not in the farm business. There seems to be a belief out there, at least among some, that farmers are doing no more than mining their land for all its worth today, with little thought about the consequences tomorrow. What farmers may not like to hear is that the concern over such actions might be warranted in more cases than they would like to admit. There are mounting influences, which may be pushing farmers to maximize yields at all costs today with lessening consideration of what the land might be able to produce in a decade or two. The first is purely financial in nature. The debt load of farmers is high. Costs of production are high. The cost to expand is high. The result is a need to generate good returns on every acre available. That means doing whatever can

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist reasonably be done to crop every acre, year-after-year. The result is marginal land probably better suited to wetlands and bush are cleared for cultivation. Crop rotations are pushed in pursuit of the highest valued crops, think canola on much of the Canadian Prairies. Farmers are eager to adapt to genetically modified crops, again witness canola, again in pursuit of returns. Business is almost always profit driven, and farming is no more or less than big business today. That was less the case in the past. The farm was seen as a family legacy. When one envisions passing something on to the next generation it is gen-

erally cared for in the best possible way, whether it’s the family bible, a vintage car or the family homestead. Today a farm is more likely to pass to someone from miles away, based on having the cash to buy out a modern, large-scale farm, than it is to be passed within the family. Like it or not that may subtly influence how one approaches farming. One is more apt to fix a hole in a radiator hose with pepper when selling the car to a stranger, whereas the hose gets replaced when sold to a nephew. And then there is the need to produce food for a growing population. It does not take much of a negative production glitch to alarmingly tighten supplies, or by contrast a record crop here last fall did not cause an outright price collapse because the world can utilize larger supplies. The multiple modern realities on the farm have to be pressuring farmers in ways that might not be the best for the future but are needed to operate successfully. That is a reality of the times.

Letter to the Editor Reader says issue of gay people in communities must be addressed The Editor: A free press is essential in a democracy to report on what the government is doing, to provide information for informed consent, and as an extension of the rights of freedom of association and freedom of expression. Jordan Baker writes that it is “mindless” to include homosexuality in pro-life advocacy on the basis that there is nothing “to actually study.” He is closer in role to the politician in former prime minister, Jean Chretien, who insisted that “abortion is settled in Canada”, than he is as a journalist operating on the principles of journalistic inquiry. Abortion and homosexuality are linked by

the categorical demand of “my body, my choice” and “I have a right” without allowing for a statement of the question, “Is this a use or an abuse of the exercise of human freedom?” Unwanted abortion or uninformed consent are not an exercise of choice. As Peter LaBarbera stated in his speech in Weyburn, even in a world where the moderate approach has been to decriminalize sodomy, criminal codes still retain it as a punishable offence in cases of rape and sexual abuse. Baker’s statement, “there is nothing wrong with homosexuality” suddenly needs to be revisited. In the Supreme Court ruling in Whatcott, the flyer warning about “men seeking boys” was

retained by the justices as acceptable criticism. S h a w n a S p a r r o w, a chastity speaker, was also at the conference in Weyburn. About chastity education, she explained that “chastity is a different way of looking at sexuality, of elevating sex for its potential to create new life”, raising another connection between abortion and homosexuality: do people have a right to sterilized sexual activity or a right to destroy human life post conception? When both are promoted by the government through legislation and tax dollars, an open debate should not be made illegal.

Simon a 50/50 chance to return as Roughrider in 2014 National He’s the most prolific receiver in CFL history and a future member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, but there’s no guarantee Geroy Simon will return to help the Saskatchewan Roughriders defend their Grey Cup title. The Riders acquired the veteran slotback from the B.C. Lions in January 2013 to provide veteran leadership for a squad looking to make a successful Grey Cup run on home soil. After enduring one of the worst seasons statistically of his illustrious CFL career, Simon stood tall

in the title game, registering three catches for 67 yards and two TDs in leading Saskatchewan to a 45-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Mosaic Field. However, Brendan Taman, the Riders’ general manager and vice-president of football operations, couldn’t guarantee Simon’s return during a CFL conference call Tuesday. “Geroy and I have, obviously, a pretty good relationship so when we made this deal last year to acquire him we knew at the end of the first year he played for us that we’d sit down and

talk about his role,” Taman said. “Obviously we have a contract issue we’re going to have to talk about, too, so that plan is ongoing ... those talks are progressing, you could say, one way or the other. “He’s got as good a chance of not being back as he will be back.” *** TORONTO - Erie Otters right-winger Connor Brown has won the Red Tilson Trophy as the Ontario Hockey League’s most outstanding player this season. International NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Predators have hired Peter Laviolette, who becomes only the second head coach in the franchise’s history. The Predators announced the move Tuesday. They team also announced Kevin McCarthy has been hired as an assistant on Laviolette’s staff. “Having reached the peak as a Stanley Cup Champion, Peter knows the intensity and urgency it will take to help our team reach its ultimate goal,” general manager David Poile said. “He is a great hockey mind who not only has a winning resume, but has done it with

an aggressive offensive philosophy while also excelling in helping young players reach their potential. Laviolette, who signed a multi-year contract, will take over in Nashville once he finishes coaching the United States at the 2014 World Championship. He coached Carolina to a Stanley Cup in 2006 and took Philadelphia to the Stanley Cup finals in 2010. He was fired in October after the Flyers lost their first three games of the season. Laviolette said in a statement he loves the Predators’ nucleus starting with defenceman Shea Weber and goaltender Pekka Rinne. *** SALT LAKE CITY University of Utah President David Pershing says he agrees it’s time to consider some changes to the school

fight song that some find sexist. Pershing announced Monday he’s asking the Office of Student Affairs to oversee a committee that will weigh a “modest update” in the song, “Utah Man.” Student government leaders passed a resolution last month urging changes in the century-old song with lyrics that include, “our coeds are the fairest.” The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://tinyurl. com/lz4gkqp) the faculty’s Academic Senate threw its support behind the effort on Monday. Pershing says he’s committed to the importance of “both tradition and inclusion.” He’s asking students, faculty, staff, alumni and others to suggest new lyrics through May 31.

A People’s Choice contest was also part of the day’s adventure.
