Cheers&Jeers
The Santa Claus parade down Midale’s main street was held on Nov. 2 with a series of floats and an appearance from Old St. Nick himself.
Cheers to everyone who participated and contributed to Estevan’s Wishmaker Walk/Run for Wishes this year. We raised $13,481.75! Since it takes an average of $10,000 to grant a wish to a child with a life-threatening illness, we succeeded in helping make a child’s wish come true. Thanks to everyone involved. Cheers to Miss Gress at Hillcrest School. Her hard work is greatly appreciated.
I bet you know my name is Tao. I am a male, Border Collie, but what you don’t know is now I am neutered.
Cheers and thank you to Dr. Akinsete for making the time in between patients to see my little girl who was suffering from a very painful ear infection. You are a great doctor and a wonderful asset to our community.
Jeers to there being no animal control officer. I’m tired of watching our city grow — along with our taxes — as our services dwindle. Jeers to the politicians and municipal employees who take advantage of and waste taxpayer funds.

News people by their very trade tend to be news junkies. We love news. We love the weird and dramatic stories that crop up all over the world every single day. There is no better place than the world of politics to get stories that are downright unimaginably bizarre. These stories keep politics spicy and help maintain interest in the dry world of talking heads and party lines, interest that may otherwise wane for non-junkies of news consumption. For the most part, politicians are ambitious people who like the spotlight and need the approval of others. There’s no better time to seek out that approval than during election season, after all. Because of that, the political scene lends itself naturally to some interesting characters. Whatever one may think of Rob Ford, Toronto’s woefully infamous mayor, he’s an interesting guy. He has been steadily making headlines for all the wrong reasons ever since that crazy city decided to elect him in 2010. Most recently, obviously, he has been in the news regarding an episode of cocaine consumption during his time as His Worship of T-Dot. As anyone would do, he passes off the incident as something he “probably” did, “probably” at a time when he was too intoxicated to know what he was doing, where he was or when he was doing it. This is just the latest blunder from the
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers mayor’s office in Toronto since Ford’s election. He has gotten drunk at functions where he was appearing as mayor. There has been an issue regarding Ford voting on motions for which he has a direct investment. While his refusal to accept a publicly-funded driver is noble, his carelessness behind the wheel of his vehicle has been less so. He has been accused of all manner of inappropriate conduct, voting on issues in which he had a conflict of interest. He has refused to appear at the opening ceremonies of the Pride Parade. His tenure has been terrible for Toronto but absolutely a joy to follow as someone who really digs news and enjoys watching a train wreck unfold for three years. There is a lot more great stuff in politics than just Ford. He doesn’t get all the credit for making politics a great thing to follow. Look to Carlos Danger, aka Anthony Weiner, who just failed to win a mayoral election in New York City. His story is what we crave out of politics. These stories of people who send interesting photos of them-
selves to strange women and give themselves hilarious aliases are why I love politics. That stuff makes all the important things in politics interesting. The sideshows allow us to get involved in the important part of politics. It encourages us to vote. If I lived in Toronto, come the next municipal election I’d make sure I got myself into a booth to do everything I could to not have to put up with Ford again for another term. These characters and their wacky antics help draw some attention to actual issues that are of some importance. Residents of Toronto must hear about Ford crack-cocaine smoking and wonder what other shenanigans that guy has been up to while running their city. These scandals, while generally a distraction from important issues that need to be addressed, also help to interest people in otherwise stale political scenes. We need these larger than life personalities and their fumbling antics in order to keep us tuned into what really matters: What exactly is all our public money being used for and is it benefitting people in our communities? The focus can be turned too much to non-policy issues in our municipal, provincial and federal politics, but that only helps to invite others who may not follow the worlds of their elected leaders to check in on them from time to time.
Agribition a fall staple for farmers It is the season of fall fairs across the Prairies. Here in Yorkton, Grain Millers Harvest Showdown celebrated its 25th anniversary. Having arrived in the city just on the eve of the first show a quarter century ago, I have seen the event evolve from its infancy. In fact, one of my earliest assignments with the then Enterprise newspaper was to head to the fairgrounds and interview Yorkton Exhibition Association manager Shaun Morin. I found Shaun in the parking lot, a mallet in hand driving metal stakes into the asphalt as anchors for tents to be used to house stock at the first Showdown. To launch a fall show in Yorkton was a rather daring endeavour for the YEA, and there were some growing pains through the early years. But the Board of the YEA stayed the course. The show quickly established four elements, which have remained as a foundation for the show. On the agricultural side the commercial grain and cattle shows provided a place for area producers to exhibit their best. The trade show became a natural bridge between business, agricultural and event goers. And the rodeo was the entertainment highlight of the week. The Harvest Showdown line-up has been an adaptive one, taking on niche events, which have come and gone with the ebb and flow of farm trends.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist A commercial sheep sale was tried but never gained the traction to be a long-term event. The arena floor was, for a time, home to a major llama show. A herd bull alley brought purebred cattlemen to the show. Through the changes, Harvest Showdown has always been a showcase of local agriculture, and that is why the show is important. Even in a time of instant connection via cellphones and the Internet, a place for likeminded people to come together and talk shop is important. For the farm sector in east-central Saskatchewan that place is Harvest Showdown. Of course, Yorkton’s show did have something of a template to follow. Canadian Western Agribition launched in Regina in 1971 as a place to showcase western livestock genetics to the world. For the first decade of Agribition, I was there, still a boy, and in awe of the sheer scale of it. There were pigs and sheep and cattle from wall-to-wall. Each new show seemed to introduce a new breed of cattle in an era when European exotic
breeds were first crossing the ocean to forever change the North American beef sector. Charolais, Limousin, Maine Anjou, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Chianina all arrived to much fanfare in the early years of Agribition. The Regina-based event showed the west that agriculture could draw crowds, and others would pop up as a result; Farmfair in Edmonton and AgEx in Brandon, along with the aforementioned Harvest Showdown. The best of the west in agriculture emerged to large crowds of both local and international visitors. And the shows of the west have their roots east, too. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto launched in 1922, and remains a major agricultural event in this country. As grand as the first Agribition was to a boy of 11, taking a week off school, climbing aboard a train, and heading to the Royal when I was 12 remains one of my best memories. Toronto in 1972 was very different from anything a 12-year-old from Tisdale had ever experienced. The show itself so different with dairy goats and flower shows and rabbits. The fall shows are something that are now part of the yearly routine for many in farming, but that is only because over the years people had a vision to promote agriculture, and they had the determination to make it work. All those people working behind the scenes deserve a lot of credit for what they created and maintained.

Canadians using food banks still near record high
National TORONTO - The embattled mayor of Toronto made a shocking admission Tuesday: “Yes! I’ve smoked crack cocaine!” Mayor Rob Ford told reporters at city hall that he tried the drug about a year ago. “Am I addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors.” Ford has been under intense scrutiny for months after two media outlets reported the existence of a video that they said appeared to show the mayor smoking crack. Until Tuesday, Ford had denied he used crack cocaine and suggested the video did not exist. “Yes, I’ve made mistakes, all I can do now is apologize and move on,” the mayor said. “You guys kept referring to alcohol...there’s been times when I’ve been in a drunken stupor. That’s why I want to see the tape. I want everyone in the city to see this tape.” Last week, Toronto’s police chief said authorities had recovered a video of the mayor with images that corresponded with media reports about him appearing to smoke crack cocaine. Ford repeated a call for the tape to be released on Tuesday.
“I don’t even recall there being a tape or a video and I know that. So I want to see the state that I was in,” he said. “I wasn’t lying,” he told reporters. “You didn’t ask the correct questions. No, I’m not an addict and no I do not do drugs.” *** OTTAWA - The number of Canadians using food banks has fallen off slightly but still remains near record highs almost four years after the end of the economic recession. The annual study by Food Banks Canada, scheduled for release Tuesday, shows that more than 833,000 people relied on food handouts during one snapshot month earlier this year, compared with 872,379 the previous March. More than a third of them were children. “Underlying this small drop is a concern of enormous proportions: food bank use remains higher than it was before the recession began,” the report states. “During a time of apparent economic recovery, far too many Canadians still struggle to put food on the table.” Low-income jobs are the culprit, the report found, and there’s an abundance of them thanks to a Canada-wide loss of manufacturing jobs over the past three decades. social assistance — and the paltry incomes provided by those programs once disadvantaged Canadians are able to access them — only add to the misery. The annual HungerCount study provides one of the most up-to-date national indicators of poverty. The latest Statistics Canada numbers show that 8.8 per cent of people were living below the low-income cutoff in 2011. Who is going hungry in 2013? More than half of those turning to food banks are families with children, the report concludes. Twelve per cent of households asking for help were currently employed, while another five per cent were recently employed. Eleven per cent of those using food banks self-identify as First Nations, Metis or Inuit, and another 11 per cent are new immigrants to Canada. International KINSHASA, Congo - A leader of the M23 rebel group in eastern Congo says his movement is ending its rebellion after more than a year and a half of fighting against the Congolese government. In a statement released early Tuesday, M23 President Bertrand Bisimwa said the group would seek to resolve its grievances through “political means only.” The announcement came as the Congolese military declared victory over the rebels, having seized control of the last two hills that had been held by M23. Peace talks between the two sides have repeatedly stalled since December, and the Congolese military stepped up its offensive last month against the rebels. Analysts have cautioned, though, that M23 was only the latest reincarnation of discontent in the region and that other groups could emerge from its demise.
