Canadian tennis player Pospisil burnt out National VANCOUVER - Martin Rennie is out as coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Team president Bob Lenarduzzi says the team will not renew Rennie’s contract beyond 2013. The Major League Soccer club missed the playoffs this year after qualifying for the post-season for the first time in 2012. Rennie, who compiled a 24-25-19 record in two seasons with Vancouver, watched the Whitecaps’ 2013 playoff hopes come to end when they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, Colo on Oct. 19. Vancouver (13-12-9) rebounded to beat Colorado 3-0 in Sunday’s regular-season finale, with star Brazilian forward Camilo Sanvezzo burying a hat trick to win the MLS Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer. But the result was not enough to save Rennie’s job. The team says the search for a new coach will begin immediately. The 38-year-old Rennie’s fate was probably sealed when Vancouver stumbled to a 1-7-2 record midway through the season. The Scot also failed to win the Canadian championship in his two years at the Whitecaps’ helm, which would have qualified the club for the CONCACAF Champions League. There were also questions about his squad selection, tactics and the development of some of Vancouver’s younger players.

*** PARIS - Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil was ousted in the first round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday, saying he was “mentally injured” in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 loss to Spain’s Pablo Andujar. Ranked 32nd in the world, Pospisil was due to play Frenchman Gael Monfils, but he withdrew with a wrist injury. Pospisil had the momentum going into the match against No. 52 Andujar, who got into the draw as a lucky loser, after making the semifinals last weekend in Basel. But he said his head wasn’t in the game Tuesday. “I had no physical issues,” Pospisil said. “I was just burned out mentally. I was not ready to fight, I’m very disappointed right now. It’s true I’ve had a great season but it’s disappointing to lose like that.” Pospisil went down with 62 unforced errors, 38 off of his usually reliable forehand. His lack of fire was evident in the opening game when he dropped serve in the 37-minute first set, despite dominating Andujar with 12 winners. Pospisil rallied in the second set to take it with a pair of breaks but failed to keep up his intensity in the third set as the rigours of the demanding season began to take a toll. *** TORONTO - Canadian star cyclist Ryder Hesjedal says he “chose the wrong path” after reports suggesting he was involved in doping emerged Wednesday. Excerpts from a new book by former Danish rider Michael Rasmussen say Hesjedal was shown how to use

performance-enhancing drugs at the start of his career. Hesjedal said in a statement that the “mistakes” happened more than 10 years ago when he was still a mountain biker and they were short-lived. Hesjedal did not explicitly say he took performanceenhancing drugs, but in the contrite statement he apologized “for my part in the dark past of the sport.” “I will always be sorry,” he said. Excerpts of Rasmussen’s autobiography “Yellow Fever” released in Danish newspaper claim that he taught Hesjedal how to use EPO, a banned substance used in blood doping. Rasmussen admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs throughout most of his career in January. Hesjedal won the Giro d’Italia last year to become the first Canadian to win a major European tour event. International LONDON - Two days after Sebastian Vettel’s fourth title triumph, the Formula One spotlight shifted to London’s High Court and the latest case that leaves Bernie Ecclestone’s future in doubt. The longtime commercial head of F1 is already under investigation in Germany over an alleged payment of $44 million relating to the sale of the motorsport series in 2006. A German court won’t say until next year whether Ecclestone will stand trial on charges of bribery and incitement to breach of trust. German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky has already been jailed for taking the payment from Ecclestone. Gribkowsky was in charge of selling the bank BayernLB’s stake in F1 to investment group CVC Capital Partners. Now at a London court, former F1 shareholder, German media company Constantin Medien, is suing Ecclestone and two other defendants for up to $144 million, claiming F1 was undervalued at the time of the sale. *** ENCINITAS, Calif. - NFL Hall of Famer Lance Alworth is getting back his Super Bowl ring, 25 years after it was stolen. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday the 1971 ring was scheduled to be sold Nov. 20 at an auction house in Laguna Niguel with an opening bid of $44,000. The ring was reported stolen in 1988 from a San Diego bar that displayed sports memorabilia. Investigators say Alworth received a phone call last month demanding $40,000 for the ring. The former wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys contacted authorities. No arrests have been made. *** MOSCOW - Russian gay activists say the new president of the International Olympic Committee refused to meet with them while visiting the 2014 Winter Games city of Sochi. Preparations for the Sochi Olympics have been overshadowed by criticism of a recently enacted Russian law outlawing “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations among minors.” Many worry the law may apply to gay athletes and visitors. LGBT Network said in a statement Wednesday that Thomas Bach turned down their invitation to sit with activists, offering to meet at an unspecified date in Lausanne, Switzerland, instead. Activists say they have been asking for a meeting for more than two weeks. IOC spokesman Mark Adams says in a statement that they can meet this week at IOC headquarters in Lausanne and “we look forward to welcoming them.”

George Hildebrandt on alto sax, and Gord Gault sharing tenor sax duties with Fortowsky, who graduated in 1977. For those keeping count, all the players add up to 11, and that’s exactly how many people will be performing with 8’s Enuff this Friday. They have added to their numbers since the group started and named. For Fortowsky, coming back to Estevan and playing at the art gallery brings back some memories. “The neat thing for me about coming to play down at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum is that my dad built the building,” she said. Her father is Gilbert Russell, who operated Lorman Construction years ago in the Energy City. Fortowsky noted that Milliker was part of the ECS band that travelled to Europe. The band competed in a marching band competition in Holland and brought home gold medals. “A lot of people like to call us the Little Big Band. We have a binder of about 100 songs,” said Fortowsky. “We’ve got a lot of stuff from the early 1900s all the way up to the 1970s, but we’re probably sticking pretty closer to the stuff from the First and Second World War eras.” The main gallery room will be open for those listen-

ers who can’t help but move with the music. Regina’s John and Sheila Criton will be on hand at the beginning of the evening to give a quick swing dance lesson. The couple has been dancing for the past 26 years, and they are now instructors at the Regina Ballroom Dancing Club. The Critons will be putting participants through a crash-course on Friday. Sheila said a lesson is generally an hour, so conducting a beginner lesson in half an hour will mean they will focus on hearing the music and finding its rhythm. “We’ll do a couple of basic patterns, just get people hearing the rhythm, basically, and training their ear to hear what we hear,” said Sheila. “In a short time, that’s about all you can accomplish.” The addition of swing dance is a new twist to the After Dark series, that has in the past seen bands and other artists perform largely stripped down versions of their music, as well as folk artists. With 8’s Enuff, it’s the first time a big band will perform for After Dark audiences. Doors open at the EAGM at 8 p.m.

It seems at the upcoming After Dark concert series event, eight just isn’t quite enough. The series, which recently found a sponsor and will henceforth be known as Southern Plains Co-op After Dark, will be featuring its first big band While the evening typically involves a band of slung guitars and light percussion, tonight’s concert will feature 8’s Enuff, an eight-piece big band, featuring a couple of alums from the Estevan Comprehensive School’s band program. Estevan alum and 8’s Enuff member Linda Fortowsky spoke with the Mercury last week about the upcoming concert at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum. The band started with eight members in the summer of 1999. Everyone played in the Bandits Community Band, playing in concert and jazz bands. As any great band origin story, 8’s Enuff began with a couple of friends jamming. “Coming into the summer months a bunch of us were kind of like, ‘Jeez, you know, I’m not really ready to put the horns away yet.’ Bob, one of the sax players, he had some music given to him by another fellow who wasn’t using it anymore, so we got together and started jamming every Tuesday,” said Fortowsky. That fall they played their first show at a curling bonspiel beer garden in Regina. “From that point it was like, this is kind of fun. We’re having a blast playing this music. So we started playing for the long-term care facilities in Regina, and it just grew from there,” she added. The band includes keyboardist Dennis Hendrickson, drummer Bruce Thompson, bass player Brian Herman, Vlad Osatiuk who will be filling in for James Pasklar on the trumpet, John Hodsman playing the trombone, Dwight Milliker — the other Estevan native and graduate in 1972 — on the baritone sax, Bob Adams, Cliff Yee and

Yoga shapes life of Estevanite Sasha Friess was drawn to yoga as a physical replacement for dance, and since, it has shaped her life in unimaginable ways. For Friess, it took dropping out of university to really find the direction she wanted in terms of a professional life. “I was in and out of university for the course of three years taking various classes but never feeling that passion that someone should feel when pursuing a career,” she said. “On the other hand, I was beginning to feel very passionately about my yoga prac-
tice, so I decided to drop out of university for the time being.” That’s when she headed off to Mexico for a month-long yoga teacher training course intensive. “I guess that was the moment when I decided I wanted to pursue a career in yoga,” added Friess. The Estevan native now lives in Nicaragua, teaching yoga and hosting other sessions at the Apoyo Lodge. She has been in the Central American country between

Honduras and Costa Rica for the past three years, after starting out teaching yoga in a small studio in Granada. “I had met a woman at an ashram in the Bahamas who I became very good friends with, and she was looking after the studio in Granada for a friend. She needed another yoga teacher and asked me if I was interested in teaching. At the time I was wavering on whether I should go to school for natural nutrition or to continue to travel, and Nicaragua sounded like a good opportunity to grow so I went ahead and booked my flight.” She decided to stay in Nicaragua after forming a relationship and moving in with her boyfriend, who owns Apoyo Lodge along with two other silent partners. The couple now run the lodge together. They live in an isolated area of a protected ecological nature reserve inside the crater of a volcano that imploded thousands of years ago, creating a basin of crystal clear mineral-rich water. The lodge sits directly on the shores of this laguna. “The property is covered in fruit trees, and you can hear monkeys and tropical birds all around you. For us it’s paradise,” said Friess. “We both share strong beliefs in living a simple, natural, down-to-earth lifestyle. The seclusion has given me a lot of time to spend with myself for introspection, and it can be challenging at times but there is nowhere else I would rather be right now.” She offers yoga to guests and coordinates wellness retreats held at the lodge. Their guests are usually from Canada, the United States, Europe and Nicaragua. “Most of our clients come to the lodge for a vacation first and foremost and I think
it’s just kind of a bonus for them (if they are into yoga) that there is a yoga teacher offering classes,” said Friess. She noted that not everyone who stays with them takes advantage of yoga classes. People who come for retreats may come for the natural setting and unique and serene location. The lodge is first and foremost a vacation rental. Families and groups rent the lodge for their stay. Friess provides daily yoga classes and private sessions as well as breath work, meditation, workshops and reiki sessions. “The future of Apoyo Lodge is bright. We are a very new business, and I feel that we are just getting started. There will definitely be more retreats coming up and we hope to start offering yoga teacher trainings by fall 2014,” said Friess, about the future plans for Apoyo Lodge. “Because the lodge sits on more than an acre we are thinking of turning the property into a yoga community and selling cabanas.” She said her whole life is invested in Nicaragua and they still have a beach project that they want to pursue. Still, she doesn’t see Nicaragua being the end game for her. “We still have a lot of travelling that we want to do,” she said. Friess said yoga is something that works for her when she needs to feel good, and inspired her to pursue a life that she finds benefits her body and mind. “As you continue to practice yoga it slowly opens your eyes to life’s bigger picture and the veil of illusion begins to fall away,” she said. “Yoga shows you all that you need to work on as a human being, and it gives you the tools to do so if you’re willing to make the commitment.”

Report from the Legislature
More people, more jobs, more economic activity - Saskatchewan continues to grow. Just a few weeks ago we learned that our province is now home to more than 1.1 million people, up over 100,000 in the last six years. This is the kind of growth that brings with it many new opportunities but, at the same time, also creates new challenges. This is why, one year ago, our government unveiled the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth: Vision 2020 and Beyond. This is a plan that works toward continued growth while meeting the challenges that come along with it. Last week’s Throne Speech highlights a number of new initiatives and renewed commitments to address added pressures in areas such as health care, education, highways and housing. Initiatives include: • Further highway twinning in high traffic areas, including Highways 6 and 39 from Regina to Estevan; • A new program to enable some seniors with complex issues to receive house calls from physicians, nurse practitioners and other health care providers; • Amendments to The Personal Care Homes Act to allow for the public disclosure of inspection reports; • New Collaborative Emergency Centres in Shaunavon, Spiritwood, Wakaw and Canora; • New “hot spotting” pilot programs to take pressure off emergency rooms in Saskatoon and Regina by providing more appropriate services to assist high-risk, high-use patients who repeatedly show up in emergency rooms; • A new Student First approach in education that will include wide-ranging consultations with students, teachers, parents and administrators; • New anti-bullying measures • Nine new joint-use schools to be built using an innovative P3 bundling approach; • Improvement to Internet access and speed in all schools through SaskTel’s CommunityNet program; • Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) to become a polytechnic institution; • New measures to improve traffic safety and reduce fatalities, with a particular focus on tougher penalties for drinking and driving; • Significant infrastructure investments by Crown Corporations including four new cellular sites in the north in Fond du Lac, Stony Rapids, Black Lake and Wollaston Lake; • Expansion of the HeadStart on a Home program to encourage construction of rental properties; • A new Life Lease Program through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to improve housing options for seniors; • 1,000 new training seats, including 300 new apprenticeship seats and 700 new Adult Basic Education seats; • A new Manufacturing Centre of Excellence; • A new event hosting strategy through Tourism Saskatchewan; • A new Saskatchewan International Future Scholarship for up to 20 students annually; • A new Western Canada Livestock Price Insurance Program for cattle and hog producers; • Amendments to The Saskatchewan Employment Act to include the province’s essential services law, which was recently upheld by the Court of Appeal; • A comprehensive public consultation on the province’s disability strategy; and • A new Lobbyists Act What may be the most significant item in the Throne Speech for Southeast Saskatchewan is the mention of highway 39 and 6 twinning. The Ministry of Highways will begin to plan the twinning of this section of highway in the coming year. This will be a significant step in ensuring safety on Saskatchewan roads. These are just a few of the actions our government will be taking to address the challenges of growth with more to come when the next provincial budget is released in March. Also during this session, former University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon will release his report on the Saskatchewan Heritage Initiative - his recommendations on how best to ensure that resource revenues become a permanent source of wealth for both current and future generations. Most of our growth as a province has been driven by Saskatchewan businesses and our government will continue to play its role by encouraging further diversification of our resourcebased economy, marketing our province throughout the world and maintaining a competitive tax and regulatory environment that encourages new investment and new jobs. As we move forward into this legislative session, we are more confident than ever that our resilient, determined, optimistic citizens can meet any challenge as they work to fulfill the enormous potential of this great province. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Throne Speech and what it means for the Estevan constituency, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Rosalie in the office at 634-7311.

There was no shortage of help when it came to designing and carving a pumpkin at the Beaulieu home in time to celebrate Halloween. While father Alain removed the top of the pumpkin, eagerly looking on were Dominique and Nanette. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. If you have a photo you think readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Jordan Baker at jbaker@estvanmercury.ca.

Students rise to challenge this week Grade 9 students at the Estevan Comprehensive School once again received the opportunity to face their challenges head on. Challenge Day was held at the high school on Monday and Tuesday, while the event moved to Arcola for a Wednesday session. The event seeks to give students an opportunity to express themselves and feel safe in school, an environment in which these young people spend a lot of their time. The Challenge Day organization seeks to build empathy, while igniting a movement of compassion and positive change known as the Be the Change movement. In Estevan this year were Challenge Day leaders Chris Heinze and Angela Aguilar. Heinze has been with the organization for four months, but Monday marked the first time he took the challenge to a group of students. He called the day a bit of a rollercoaster, where the mood and emotion in the rooms will fluctuate as the group moves from different topics. He said it helps to create the safe space that students need to feel comfortable sharing personal stories with groups. “These students, it was so wonderful to see them open up and be able to share and be able to connect with the adults,” said Heinze. “It was really,
really touching to see the real stories. That was really wonderful.” He said the themes and issues students face are recurring. The leaders hear many of the same stories no matter what school they attend. “Unfortunately, we hear a lot of the same stories. We had a lot of separation in the school. Students feel alone. They feel that they have nobody to turn to and they’re going through it alone. Unfortunately, that’s how a lot of students around the world feel.” Heinze said that there are moments throughout the day that allow students to connect with one another, particularly those who may seem different in a first impression. “What was really cool is we had an instance of a girl reaching out to another student who did feel alone. She said, ‘Hey guys, this person is someone different than what you think.’ Some people are coming through this province or coming through this town, and they’re not so different even if they come from a long way away,” said Heinze. Heinze is from Indiana and moved to Florida before heading to California to begin working with Challenge Day. He attended a Challenge Day four years and said he was touched by the stories the young people were sharing. “As a 21-year-old, I thought that if
I had that in high school it would have been so much better,” he said about ultimately making his decision to join the team. “I was still seeing the same problems I felt in high school that I felt in the workplace. That’s why I was called to Challenge Day. If nothing else than to be selfish and give the high school me a little hope,” he said. He said the first session for him on Monday was nerve-wracking, he but found the atmosphere welcoming. “I saw people come into a room, and some of them were really apprehensive and a little distant. I saw them reach out to people, and I saw others reach out to them, and that is a win for everyone. To see that they have support and for them to feel safe enough to give that support is very powerful to me.” He said the day is designed to help students come out of their comfort zone and said it was fun to see people step beyond what they may feel comfortable with and take chances. “We try to tell them they are powerful people, just by being a human being,” Heinze said, noting he hopes the students move forward with the power to get through whatever it is they are going through. “And maybe they can reach out and change something about their life or about their community.”

True spirit of Movember is health As they say in the card game euchre, “I’m going alone!” Moustaches are not something that very many people are comfortable with. Men, women, and especially children do not appreciate the presence of lip whiskers that don’t belong to the family cat. My Estevan Mo buddy has moved away and publisher Brant Kersey is attempting to grow a majestic beard and maybe start wearing plaid exclusively so he can move into the woods to get in touch with the wilderness. As the only Movember participant from our office, there’s a lot of responsibility on my shoulders, not only to fundraise but also to grow a mo worthy of representing the six men in our office. Movember has branched out and extended its reach since it first started. Originally a month-long campaign to raise funds and awareness in regards to prostate cancer, it has since grown to incorporate mens’ health issues in a much more general sense. You see, men are stubborn. Men don’t even know about men’s health issues. We don’t care, because we’re a pretty gruff group and we can tolerate all kinds of bodily annoyances before going to a medical professional to ask the Bugs Bunny of all questions: “What’s up, doc?” We actually do need to raise awareness for the sake of men everywhere. The word has to get out far and wide enough to inspire
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers men who otherwise shrug off things they think will just work themselves out and go away on their own to actually get that minor annoyance checked out. I’m a bad example. I don’t have a doctor. I haven’t had one since moving to Estevan and didn’t have one since I stopped being a student. I rationalize because I’m 26, and 26-year-olds are healthy. It’s one of the perks of being younger than 30. Of course, that’s just a bunch of bunk, but I use that excuse and avoid my annual meet and greet with the doctor because that would be a minor inconvenience. This isn’t an isolated case. While I may be alone in the office wearing a moustache for the entire month, I’m not alone when it comes to men refusing to see a doctor regularly. I’ve heard guys say they don’t need to see a doctor because they know their body. They know their body better than any doctor ever could. They live in their body everyday. They know what’s best, what they can handle and when something is really wrong.
But while our bodies are great about telling us when we’re touching something hot, stepping on something sharp or had way too much to drink the night previous, these things we live in don’t always have the best warning systems in place to tell us we are developing heart disease, prostate cancer or countless other slow-building problems and silent killers. Silent killers are silent because there’s no warning, and there will be no warning if we don’t have someone with a little bit of expertise about the human body poking and prodding us each year. That’s what Movember is about. That’s why we grow moustaches every November. It’s a reminder for men everywhere to go see a doctor and get a full body scan or accept any test your doctor wants to run. Do it all. Submit to being your doctor’s guinea pig for a few minutes each year. To the Mo Sistas out there, bother your husbands, fathers, sons and significant others until they stumble into a doctor’s office. Drive them there if you have to. Hold their hands if they’re too scared, and offer them candy if they can show what big boys they are by controlling that quivering lip and checking in with their doctor just once every year. People are growing moustaches for mens’ health. The least that can be done to say thanks is an annual checkup.
Agriculture awareness an important priority If there is one thing off the farm itself that agriculture needs moving forward on, it is a better understanding of what the industry is by the non-farming public. It is an issue that began with First World War, which was the time the exodus of people from rural Canada began. It has been a steady process of decline for nearly a century now, and that has translated into a declining understanding of what farming actually is. We are beginning to see people today who are two or three generations removed from any agrarian roots, and that means little appreciation of what it means to grow a bushel of wheat or to raise a steer. While no one is expecting young people in Regina, Calgary or Toronto to suddenly head to a ranch to chase cattle, we do need to find a way to have those young people better understand about farming, so they appreciate exactly what went into putting a safe-to-eat steak on their plate. Without such knowledge of agriculture, people can easily be drawn to support misconceptions about the industry. So a recent announcement by Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart of more than $45,000 in funding under the Agriculture Awareness Initiative to enhance the public’s perception of agriculture and its role in the economy should be applauded.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist “Agriculture plays an important role in driving our economy and feeding Canadians,” said Ritz in a release. “These types of projects give everyone a chance to see first-hand the social and economic benefits of our vibrant and innovative agriculture industry.” The release explained the Agriculture Awareness Initiative was developed to help producer groups promote the benefits of agriculture and help improve the public perception of the industry. A better understanding is critical to promote careers in agriculture and foster public support for the industry. “It is important that we share accurate information about agriculture with the public, especially with youth, so they have an understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from and how it is being responsibly produced,” said Stewart in the release. “These projects will help highlight Saskatchewan’s role as a supplier of safe and reliable food to help feed a growing world.”
Under this program, the Saskatchewan Science Centre will receive $25,000 to enhance the experience and increase engagement with the Ag-Grow-Land exhibit. The exhibit presents themes such as Saskatchewan’s role in meeting the global demand for food; innovations in agriculture relating to topics such as animal care, crop production and soils research; the business of agriculture; and food production safety. Three other organizations have also received funding under the Agriculture Awareness Initiative: the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan has received $7,770 for their Adopt a Rancher Educational Program; Genome Prairie has received $6,000 for a workshop to promote an understanding of the importance of effective communication among Saskatchewan’s agriculture-biotech research community; and the Canadian Western Agribition has received $7,900 for agriculture awareness initiatives at the show. None of these programs is going to massively change how people view farming, but they each offer a small window into the industry, which may help raise the level of understanding for those involved. Education is not about a single element, but rather, it is a life-long process. The programs here can be a starting foundation for better understanding of a critical industry, which many of us now know little about.

Nfld. Announces $400 million investment in fisheriest
National ST. JOHN’S, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale has announced $400 million in fishery investments as the province moves to relax minimum processing requirements. Dunderdale says the federal government will fund $280 million of the total fund for research and marketing, while the province will fund the rest. The deal follows concessions the province has made toward Canada’s Comprehensive Economic and TradeAgreement with the European Union. The pact is not expected to take effect for two years but would open up lucrative European seafood markets for the province’s troubled fishery.

Dunderdale has said that she fought hard to speed up tariff-free access while protecting plant workers’ jobs. She has said that easing minimum fish processing rules for CETA exports won’t pose a major threat because of high European labour costs. “I think it’s a very good day, especially for coastal Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” said Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers union. “Tariff-free access to European markets was a game changing development for the industry,” added Derek Butler, executive director of the Association of Seafood Producers. CETA will give the province unfettered access to the world’s most discerning seafood market, he said. *** TORONTO - A police tribunal has heard that an activist, anti-police lawyer has no credibility when he claims he was arrested illegally during the G20 three years ago. In closing arguments, defence lawyer Alan Gold accused Nicholas Wright of either exaggerating or lying about what happened. Wright accuses Const. Ryan Simpson of arresting him and warning him he had no right to remain silent. But Gold calls the allegations absurd, and says there’s doubt about whether there even was an arrest. Prosecutor Brendan Van Niejenhuis says Wright was honest, but his credibility should have no bearing on the matter. He says it is irrelevant whether Simpson actually arrested Wright or simply detained him for investigative purposes. VANCOUVER - They are the stuff of Halloween horror stories, the alter-ego of vampires, the frightful beasts that foreshadow the macabre. Bats strike fear in many hearts, but it is these nocturnal mammals that are in danger, decimated by a mysterious disease that has wiped out seven million in North America in a few short years. “Wherever it shows up, it has a significant impact,” said Graham Forbes, a biologist at the University of New Brunswick and a member of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada subcommittee. “Some caves are basically becoming empty.” In February 2012, COSEWIC held an emergency assessment for the tri-colored bat , the Little Brown Myotis and Northern Myotis and found all three were endangered by white-nose syndrome, so named because of the white fungus that grows over the faces of infected bats. A recommendation was made to the federal environment minister that an emergency order be issued listed them as endangered under the federal Species at Risk Act. In November, a COSEWIC committee will meet again to discuss their status and vote on another recommendation.
The outcome is unlikely to surprise. “It’s bad and it got worse,” Forbes said. By the end of last winter, the disease had been confirmed in 22 U.S, states and in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia. In New Brunswick, it is estimated about 99 per cent of the known winter population of little brown myotis, or little brown bat, has died. The disease has not yet been confirmed west of Ontario, but it has been found in Minnesota, south of Manitoba, and it’s spread about 200 to 400 kilometres per year since it first appeared in New York state in February 2006. It is believed that as many as seven million bats have died since. The fungus grows in cold weather, and it hits while bats are most vulnerable, hibernating in caves and old mines through the winter. Experts believe the fungus was introduced in North America by a visitor from Europe, where it has existed for some time and where bats have developed resistance. International NEW YORK, N.Y. - Horse-drawn carriage rides through the streets of New York — an experience nearly as old as the city itself — could be clip-clopping to a halt. Animal activists who have long argued that horses have no place mixing in the traffic of the nation’s biggest city now have the backing of both leading candidates for mayor. And the front-runner heading into the Nov. 5 election, Democrat Bill de Blasio, supports a plan to replace the horses with old-timey electric cars to take tourists on slow-speed jaunts around Central Park. To the top-hatted horse drivers who dispense lap blankets and tour guide wisdom along with the rides, that plan has about as much charm as a plastic pony. “People come for the clip-clop of a horse’s hooves,” said driver Christina Hansen. “Nobody wants to pet a fender.” Ending the city’s 155-year-old horse-drawn carriage industry has emerged as an unlikely issue in the recent mayoral debates, and one of the few points of agreement in an otherwise bitter race between de Blasio and Republican Joe Lhota. That’s a marked shift from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is leaving office after 12 years. He has consistently supported the horse-drawn carriage industry, saying it’s a city-regulated tourist draw. For de Blasio, the city’s public advocate who is leading by 40 points in the polls, the issue is animal cruelty. “We are in the biggest, densest urban area in North America. It is not a place for horses. They are not meant to be in traffic jams.” Lhota has said that he would eliminate the carriage horses, mostly because of the “unfortunate” smell in and around Central Park. He has also expressed interest in some kind of motorized replacement.
Provincial REGINA - A stray dog who was found, rescued and cared for by Regina police officers now has a permanent home. Const. Cory Longhurst was flagged down Thanksgiving weekend by a woman who had found the dog in an alley. The canine, who was later named Copper, was bleeding from a deep gash on his back leg. He was taken to a 24-hour veterinary clinic, but without an owner to pay for his care, Copper faced being put down. That’s when police officers decided to pool their money for treatment. Longhurst says one of the officers, who wants to remain anonymous, has decided to take Copper home for good. As of Monday, donations from police members and a few civilians had reached $3,500. The money is enough to cover Copper’s surgery and a pink cast on his leg. The cast will have to be replaced every two days for the next couple of months if Copper is to keep his leg. Even then, an amputation might still be needed. Longhurst, one of the officers looking after Copper until a permanent home could be found, has some advice for the pooch’s new owner. “Young dogs, they just want to run and play and exercise and have fun... and he’s got to be kept on leash just to minimize the injury to his leg.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have
no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
