Local Filipinos raising funds for relief back home The Filipino community in Estevan has done a lot for the southeast region, and now they are calling on the city’s generosity to help their friends and families back home who have been affected by the typhoon that swept through parts of the Philippines earlier this month. Typhoon Haiyan hit land on Nov. 8 with winds topping 240 kilometres per hour destroying homes and communities and killing thousands. The Energy City has welcomed a growing population of Filipino immigrants in recent years as they have flocked to Saskatchewan for work, and they have felt the effects of the disaster through family and friends who live in their home country. In order to raise money to go toward the Philippine Relief Fund, a group of local Filipinos are organizing a number of events to help support the people of their home country. This Saturday there will be a concert at Eddie Webster’s Dining Room and Lounge, featuring the Third Town Band and DJ Armani. A steak supper will also be held at Eddie’s on Dec. 3. All proceeds from the event will go to the relief fund. James Senires, who

plays drums in the Third Town Band, has close ties to home. His wife lives in Manila and her parents manage his hog farm, which is much closer to the main areas of damage in the country. “My wife’s parents’ home was restructured in the past year, and it has been devastated by the typhoon. My small pig farm is ruined. I lost all my stuff there,” he said, noting all of the livestock, about 50 hogs, died in the storm. “My wife went to the province to my in-laws place and checked on my in-laws. They survived the typhoon, but everything was wrecked. That was the province where the typhoon hit.” One of his wife’s cousins died in the storm. “There’s a lot of wreckage everywhere and the biggest issue right now is getting back to the normal things that they do. It’s hard for the people who were devastated by the typhoon,” said Senires. He has sent more money to his wife to help rebuild her parents’ house. He said the foundation is still usable but the upper floors are gone. They have already begun to rebuild “little by little,” he said, and they are now living back in the house, “but you

couldn’t call it a real house,” added Senires. “They were kind of spared,” he said of his wife’s parents. “It destroyed the next block from their place. Downtown from their place 400 people died, and that’s the biggest part people are trying to recover from.” Immediately following the disaster Raquelee Caliston and Eric “Ginger” Goot wanted to gather boxes of clothes in order to send home for people in need. In the next few days they received a truck full from the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. They are now accepting canned goods and generic medicines along with cash donations. All goods may be dropped off at Eddie’s. Caliston said she even received some jackets and shoes someone just bought from a store, and the tags were still on them. “I said ‘You don’t need to do that.’ But I’m so happy for that kind of stuff,” she said. “We are so thankful about the support we get from Canadians,” added Goot. “My grandparents are living in the centre of the where the typhoon hit,” he said. “The good thing is they’re living in a high area at the back of the mountain.

After four days, I received a call from my mom saying they are OK. They are safe and sound. I was relieved.” Caliston’s husband lives in B.C., and his mother lives in a town that was hit squarely by the storm. “We’re thinking about the families, because that is his hometown. Most of his uncles and aunties lost their houses. The school has been wrecked by the typhoon, so we’re thinking about all the students,” said Caliston. “Every time I watch the local news, the students are saying they want to go back to school, but they can’t.” After gathering the clothes, they shipped them to her husband’s hometown. “We can help them to rebuild, not just my family or my husband’s family, we want to extend help to the community and all of the other communities,” she added. Senires noted it isn’t just the fundraisers at Eddie’s that people may support. If people are unable to attend those events, the KFC restaurants in Estevan, Weyburn and Moosomin have donation boxes. That money will be sent to the same relief fund. “It’s such an overwhelming feeling when people help out here and how the Filipinos

bit of time to attend an event. Tickets for the streak dinner may be purchased by contacting Eddie’s. Caliston designed some T-shirts that can be purchased at the dinner, which will also feature raffles and a 50/50 draw.

have been integrated into the community,” said Senires. “Friends and co-workers here are just so willing to help out.” He said it’s a great feeling to be around people who want to help out and support the cause and put in a little

Bracing for another Christmas campaign If you aren’t thinking about the holidays at this point, you’re already behind the eight ball. I am once again behind the eight ball. People say the season starts earlier every year, and that’s partly true for many. For some, it isn’t until American Thanksgiving, for others it’s Halloween and for those masochistic few, it’s our country’s early-October Thanksgiving. Habitually, the Christmas season doesn’t really dawn on me until late December, and even then there is too much holiday cheer for me. Is it too early to start thinking about Christmas? Yes. You’re all crazy if your seasonal funny bones are vibrating already. I see a lot of people who start their Christmasing early. For them, it’s a holiday that lasts more than a month, and by the time the annual event is here, they’re too spent to spend any time with friends or family and don’t really enjoy themselves. They’re too stressed following six weeks of preparation and built-up expectation, making sure the holidays go over smoothly. Then someone says something racist at the turkey table and another Christmas is ruined for the entire family. Sometimes I wonder why we do the same thing every

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers year. Well, it’s officially Christmastime 2013. The malls are playing that terrible music they play each year on loop, carols sung by cartoon characters, Springsteen and children’s choirs. I don’t mean to be a grinch, and for the most part Christmas doesn’t make me a miserable or coal-hearted person, but I can only handle so much of the season each year. As a whole, we definitely go a little overboard when it comes to the holiday that also marks the passing of another successful winter solstice and celebrates the longer days of daylight ahead. I also don’t want to tell anybody how to celebrate the end of another year. If everyone else wants to spend the last two months of the year sending 2013 out with a bang then I can just smile and nod. I do a lot of smiling and nodding this time of year. I don’t know much about Hanukhah,

something I know as Jewish Christmas even though it definitely isn’t that, but it’s already in full swing. When it falls this time of year, the first time it has done so in more than 100 years, our Jewish American friends refer to the holiday as Thanksgivukkah. According to some calculations, done by other people, obviously, these two celebrations will not fall at the same time for another 79,043 years. I don’t even know what to think about that, but it’s possible it’s completely false. If not, I really hope everybody enjoyed Thanksgivukkah for the last time, not just in their lifetimes but the last time ever, because I can’t imagine anybody celebrating either of these things in 79,000 years. Either of those holidays can be a trigger for people, flipping the mental switch from regular life to Christmas time. Other triggers include snow, work parties and driving down the highway at night as lights strung from farmhouses burn my eyeballs. After the month of stress and shopping and planning and everything, many people are too exhausted and tired of thte Christmas season. When Dec. 25 finally does decide to show up, it’s often too late. I don’t care about it anymore.

Farmers pursue team approach to ag issues Something occurred this year in Saskatchewan which most people will know nothing about and yet in terms of food production it holds some definite significance. In April, 16 Saskatchewan vegetable producers formed the Prairie Fresh Food Corporation. The new organization has defined zones within the province and began coordinating production of a variety of vegetables from radishes to carrots, zucchini and sweet corn. The goal of more controlled production within the group is to ensure a steadier supply of product through the growing season, and in turn help secure local markets by offering an assured supply over a longer period of time. It is an idea which is actually long overdue if the long term goal is to create a larger domestic market and thereby increase the annual production of vegetables within the province. In this era most food stores are part of larger chains, and chains work on the premise their food aisles are mirror images of one another. They also, in large part, want customers to be able to arrive at the store seven days a week, 12-months a year,

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist and be able to purchase the same thing. And therein lies an obstacle for Saskatchewan producers in areas such as vegetable and fruit production. Producers can produce in the summer months, but often all the carrots produced are in a limited timeframe, meaning serving a large store’s continuing needs are difficult. A ‘team’ approach to production can expand the supply and open markets. The efforts of the Saskatchewan vegetable producers are something other food production sectors should certainly be looking to mimic. A group approach to fruit production could achieve access to additional markets, or make processing, such as jams, syrups and even wines more viable, on a larger, more broadly marketable scale. It is the same approach some livestock sectors need to work on. There is a growing ethnic commu-

nity in Saskatchewan, and they have different tastes, with many putting goat and lamb ahead of beef and chicken. But they want to eat chevron (goat) year round, and again production here is generally confined to spring-based production. To serve the new market, production needs to be more year-round. The sheep sector has faced the same dilemma for years. Producers coming together to manage production on a Saskatchewan-wide basis is the most logical way to deal with the market need. It does require co-operation among producers, but it is the most logical path to explore to create better market access for all. In a world where a segment of consumers is increasingly concerned with the impact their food eating decisions have on the environment, and so look to options such as the 100-mile diet (food produced within 100-miles), Saskatchewan farmers have new opportunities cropping up. It is up to them to work together to further develop and fully serve the new markets, and by so doing diversifying Saskatchewan agriculture, and increasing the bottom line on individual farms.

Proposal to bury nuclear waste approved with Japan. Along with the creation of a U.S.-style National Security Council in his office, it’s part of an effort by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to beef up Japan’s role in global security, and make a more authoritarian government at home. The moves are welcomed by the United States, which wants a stronger Japan to counter China’s military rise, but they raise fears in Japan that the country could be edging back toward its militaristic past, when authorities severely restrained free speech. “My biggest concern is that it would be more difficult for the people to see the government’s decision-making process,” said Kyouji Yanagisawa, a former top defence official who was in charge of national security at the Prime Minister’s Office from 2004-2009. “That means we can’t check how or where the government made mistakes, or help the government make a wise decision.” The bill allows heads of government ministries and agencies to classify information related to defence, diplomacy, counterintelligence and counterterrorism, almost indefinitely.

International PARIS - France will send 1,000 troops to Central African Republic to keep growing chaos at bay, the defence minister said Tuesday, announcing his country’s second military foray into a troubled former colony this year. The confirmation from Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian came a day after a top U.N. official warned of mass atrocities and possible civil war in one of the world’s poorest countries, which has been in turmoil since rebel groups joined forces in March and overthrew the president. The rebels have been accused by rights groups of committing scores of atrocities including killings, rapes and conscription of child soldiers. “It’s in collapse and we cannot have a country fall apart like that. There is the violence, massacres and humanitarian chaos that follow a collapse,” Le Drian told Europe 1 radio. “It will be a short mission to allow calm and stability to return.” France has about 2,800 troops in Mali, an operation that began after rebels and al-Qaida linked militants moved to take over the capital last winter, but Le Drian dismissed any comparisons between the two missions. “In Mali there was an attack of jihadists, terrorists who wanted to transform Mali into a terrorist state. This is a collapse of a country with a potential for religious

clashes,” he said. “France has international responsibilities.” France will accompany an African force of troops from neighbouring countries, in a mission expected to last about six months, Le Drian said. *** TOKYO - A proposed state secrecy law in Japan that imposes stiffer penalties on bureaucrats who leak information — and journalists who seek it — is spurring a public outcry, with opponents blasting it as a heavyhanded effort to hide what the government is doing and restrict press freedom. The public’s top concern is that the government won’t say exactly what it wants to make secret. Critics say the law could allow the government to withhold information about whatever it wants and ultimately undermine Japan’s democracy. The ruling party says the “secrecy protection” law, which the lower house of parliament could vote on as soon as Tuesday, is needed to allow the United States and other allies to share national security information

National KINCARDINE, Ont. - Ordinarily, a proposal to bury radioactive waste in a scenic area that relies on tourism would inspire “not in my backyard” protests from local residents — and relief in places that were spared. But conventional wisdom has been turned on its head in Ontario, where a publicly owned power company wants to entomb waste from its nuclear plants 680 metres below the surface near Lake Huron. Some of the strongest support comes from Kincardine and other communities near the would-be disposal site at the Bruce Power complex, the world’s largest nuclear power station, which produces one-fourth of all electricity generated in Canada’s most heavily populated province. Nuclear is a way of life here, and many residents have jobs connected to the industry. Meanwhile, the loudest objections are coming from elsewhere in Canada and the U.S. — particularly Michigan, which shares the Lake Huron shoreline with Ontario. Critics are aghast at the idea. They don’t buy assurances that the waste would rest far beneath the lake’s greatest depths and be encased in rock formations that have been stable for 450 million years. “Neither the U.S. nor Canada can afford the risk of polluting the Great Lakes with toxic nuclear waste,” U.S. Reps. Dan Kildee, Sander Levin, John Dingell and Gary Peters of Michigan said in a letter to a panel that is expected to make a recommendation next spring to Canada’s federal government, which has the final say. Michigan’s two U.S. senators, Democrats Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, have asked the State Department to intervene. Business and environmental groups in Michigan and Ohio submitted letters. An online petition sponsored by a Canadian opposition group has collected nearly 42,000 signatures. *** OTTAWA - Justin Trudeau emerged the big winner from Monday’s four federal byelections. At first glance, the results simply preserved the status quo: the Conservatives held on to two longtime Tory bastions in Manitoba, while the Liberals retained two traditional Grit strongholds in Toronto and Montreal. Beneath the surface, however, the byelections have roiled Canada’s political waters, suggesting the Senate expenses scandal has badly hurt the Tory government and that Trudeau’s Liberals are the ones who stand to benefit. The Liberals increased their share of the vote in all four ridings _ dramatically so in two Manitoba ridings where they were all but invisible in the 2011 election, coming within a whisker of an upset victory in BrandonSouris. In Toronto Centre and Montreal’s Bourassa riding, the Liberals emerged victorious in a battle with the NDP over which opposition party is the real government-in-waiting. Despite an aggressive challenge by the NDP, the Liberal vote share increased slightly in both ridings. Trudeau said the byelection results show Canadians are fed up with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s scandalplagued Conservative government and are looking to the Liberals, not the NDP, to replace it.

Rogers signs exclusive contract with NHL National TORONTO - The National Hockey League says it has reached a 12-year, $5.2-billion agreement with Rogers Communications for the league’s broadcast and multimedia rights. As part of the deal, Rogers says the CBC will continue to broadcast its iconic “Hockey Night in Canada” and that the TVA network in Quebec has all of the Canadian French-language multi-media rights. The league says the deal gives Rogers national rights to all NHL games, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final, on all of its platforms in all languages. In addition, the NHL says the agreement guarantees that there will be no further regionalization of games or local blackouts. Rogers has three exclusive windows to broadcast any game involving a Canadian team — Wednesday nights, Saturday nights (including CBC) and Sunday nights. The NHL says the partnership, which is subject to approve by the NHL Board of Governors, will begin with the 2014-15 season and run through the 202526 season. The Board of Governors will next meet Dec. 9-10 in Pebble Beach, Calif. The league said in a

statement that the agreement is the largest media rights deal in its history and one of the largest media rights deals ever in Canada, including the largest-ever sports-media rights agreement. *** MONTREAL - Coach Mike Babcock never forgot McGill University and his alma mater certainly never forgot him. On Monday, McGill bestowed an honorary doctorate of laws of one of its best known graduates, who often wears a university tie behind the bench for big games with the Detroit Red Wings or Canada’s Olympic team. Babcock was a star defenceman for the McGill Redmen from 1983 to 1987, earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education and doing some postgraduate work in sports psychology before going on to be one of the world’s top hockey coaches. “I grew up in a family with three sisters,” the 50-year-old said before accepting the degree at the university’s fall convocation ceremonies. “I never had any brothers, but when I left McGill I had brothers for the rest of my life. “The opportunity for me to grow as a human being and get a foundation — that

to me is what McGill is. It provides a foundation and sets you up for the rest of our life. I’m thankful for that. I’m fortunate to be tied to the school ever since. I feel it’s important to give back as much as you can.” Babcock, who will coach Canada’s team again at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, embraces his old university like few Canadian athletes or coaches. The Manitouwadge, Ont., native, who grew up in Saskatoon, doesn’t have a lot of free time between his NHL and Olympic duties, but he will still help out the Redmen by giving a call to a potential recruit or tossing some cash in the pot to fund a trip to the national finals. International SAO PAULO - McLaren ended a disappointing year with a strong result at the Brazilian Grand Prix, giving the British team an important boost ahead of the 2014 Formula One season. Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said 2014 has al-

ready started for McLaren, and it was important to finish “a long, hard and disappointing” season with the team’s “best grand prix of the year.” Jenson Button finished fourth at Interlagos for McLaren’s best result of 2013, and teammate Sergio Perez had a remarkable sixth-place finish after starting 19th. They hadn’t finished higher than fifth heading into Sao Paulo. “This is a great way to end the year, and now our focus turns squarely to 2014,” said Button, who started 14th at the Brazilian GP. “McLaren is an incredibly strong and powerful organization and, believe me, we will fight back.” The finish in Brazil also meant McLaren became the first team in F1 history to have both cars classified in every race of the season. In addition, Button became the first British driver to race in 247 grands prix, surpassing the record of David Coulthard.

“Undoubtedly, that was our best grand prix of the year,” Whitmarsh said. “It’s frustrating to have to say that after a race in which our drivers finished only fourth and sixth, but it’s also true.” It was the first time in decades that McLaren drivers failed to reach the podium in a season. Button ended ninth in the drivers’ standings and Perez was only 11th. *** CHICAGO - Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose is out for the remainder of the season. The team said that Rose had successful surgery Monday morning in Chicago to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. He was hurt Friday night at Portland. The 2011 NBA MVP missed all of last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Chicago’s 2012 playoff opener against Philadelphia. He has played in just 50 NBA games — 49 in the regular season and that

lone playoff game — since the Bulls’ run to the Eastern Conference finals during his MVP season. The latest injury occurred in the third quarter against the Trail Blazers. He lost his footing while trying to change direction to get back on defence when Nicolas Batum stole a pass from Joakim Noah and started the other way. Rose limped across the court and couldn’t put any weight on his knee. After the Blazers scored, he came out of the game during a timeout. It didn’t appear there was any contact on the play. Rose was unable to return and was on crutches afterward. With Rose back, the Bulls were expected to challenge LeBron James and the Miami Heat for supremacy in the Eastern Conference and contend for their first championship since the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen era. Instead, they’re in a familiar spot — trying to get by without their cornerstone player.

Bobolo. “One of the wonderful things about community is that it enables us to work together to welcome and help people in a way we could not do as individuals. When we pool our strengths and resources, as we do when we work together to raise funds or operate programs with the Salvation Army, we invite many people, including those in deep distress, to join us and to take their rightful places as cherished and welcomed members of our community.”

All of the funds the Salvation Army receives are used for programming within the community, such as a community luncheon program, sending young people to camps and providing emergency shelter through the Warm Welcome program to those without housing during the winter months. “We are deeply committed to promoting an ever growing sense of community here in Estevan,” said

The Salvation Army’s iconic red kettle will once again be seen all over the city leading up to Christmas after the local organization kicked off its 2013 Kettle Campaign on the weekend. With a small ceremony at the Estevan Shoppers Mall on Saturday, Lieut. Brian Bobolo opened the campaign by inviting the local chapter of the Canadian Legion to make the first donation, which was made by president Troy LeBlanc. Bobolo said the success of the Kettle Campaign “sets the tone for the many social service programs we will operate during the coming year.” The coming year is a milestone anniversary for the Salvation Army in the Energy City as it marks its 100th year in the community. Bobolo noted that just as the Salvation Army seeks to help the community’s needy, Estevanites are known for helping their neighbours. “Estevan has a long history of taking care of its own,” said Bobolo. “Standing at the kettle is a wonderful opportunity for (people) to do just that. People know that when they come to volunteer at the Salvation Army and they stand for two hours at the kettle, they are doing something for their neighbours. It’s a really fun experience to stand at the kettle.” The Salvation Army’s goals for this year are to raise $35,000 through the kettle campaign and another $55,000 from their direct mail appeal. “These funds will enable us to provide direct, hands-on practical services to anyone seeking assistance. They will allow us to continue to be available to those in crisis 365 days a year,” said Bobolo. “Once received and used to assist area individuals in need, these funds will represent approximately 60 per cent of our current annual investment in this community though the provision of a variety of much needed social services.”
