Avoid being wasteful this winter Whispers of an “intense winter” are in the air - seriously, can’t be that bad right? Though the following topic may attract the most powerful of eye rolls, it’s one that is always worth bringing up, especially when we live in the Energy City, a place some may feel is immune to the energy crisis our world is in today. Wasteful energy consumption is this nasty habit I do not like to witness. I certainly can’t sit here and claim I’m the allknowing all-powerful energy guru who can do no wrong when it comes to spending energy wisely. I occasionally leave a light on, forget to turn something off, it happens. I have developed a habit however, that has thankfully stuck for the most part, and it involves a number of minute tasks that perhaps, in the grand scheme of things, don’t make the biggest difference, but to me, I know I’m doing my part to try and conserve power. Much like the scorching summer, energy consumption in our homes during the winter is something that can bring a person’s blood to a boil. This often happens when bills happily find their way into our lives, revealing an alarmingly high number that can result in a “how did that happen?” moment. Hijinx may then ensue. It’s not a surprise. We live in a province that endures “cold” winters - come on, that bad eh? - and as a result, our heating equip-

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling ment is functioning at a pedal to the metal pace. According to a number of articles from publications like the Canadian Wildlife Association, ensuring your air conditioners and furnaces have new, or at least functional, air filters can save you up to twenty per cent of lost energy per year, a majority of it during the teeth chattering weather. Old energyguzzling light fixtures can be replaced with efficient lamps. Incandescent bulbs can hit the high road to be substituted with compact fluorescents. This simple gesture will not only put an ease to your electricity bill which makes up approximately 10 per cent of that bill each year - it would eliminate nearly half a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions every 12 months. As my favourite Trailer Park Boys character Bubbles would say, that’s “deeeeeeecent.” (Have you seen Season eight on Netflix by the way? It’s brilliant). Ahem, moving on. According to the government of Saskatchewan, the average amount of electricity consumed by a household while home

electronic products are turned off is 40 per cent. A disturbing number when you think about it, especially when you’re not even using it. This waste is known as “phantom” or stand-by power, it’s arguably one of the easiest things a person can rectify by simply eliminating that function, especially at night when you’re heading to bed. A variety of other devices also have this functionality too. If you want to try and make a small difference before going to bed, but you’re not sure if a particular piece of electronic equipment is wasting power while you sleep, just unplug it for the night. We live in a thriving energy producing province and naturally our energy consumption as a whole is higher because of industries and power plants that operate, understandably so, under a monumental amount of energy. This shouldn’t excuse the rest of us following suit in our homes, where we have the power to conserve at a much reasonable level. We, and by we I mean you, me, everyone, have unequivocally caused a significant amount of damage to our planet to this day. It’s the least we can do to try and set the ship on the right course and minimize the damage moving forward. If you don’t really care about that, then at least consider some of things I mentioned so you can keep that wallet or purse of yours a little bit heavier over the winter. That way, more Christmas gifts for everyone, or for yourself.

Using waste to create energy It is sometimes interesting how something pops up one day, quite by happenstance and the next thing you know you see it popping up in other places. An example happened to me recently. I was attending an event marking the local Louis Dreyfus Commodities canola plant at Yorkton shipping its 100th100-car train of canola meal. When the plant was initially proposed, and being built, there had been talk of one day a biodiesel facility springing up next door, the process being a natural in terms of utilizing the canola oil. That idea seems at best on the very backburner, if not simply dumped to file 13 for shredding. Biodiesel production has always relied on subsidies to be viable and in Canada there are simply no long-term programs to make a company assume the risk on a large scale. That said, the idea of biodiesel did seem to tie edible oils such as canola to the crude oil price, and that has dragged canola prices higher in terms of a low price. There is a threshold now where such oils could divert to biodiesel if the food market was to soften too much over too long a period.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist So what of the ideal of biodiesel and its cousin ethanol for fuel from cereal grains? The question came up in a general office discussion following the LDC event, which was the second random occurrence of the topic. The need for alternate fuels remains real, but it is doubtful biodiesel and ethanol from edible crops is the best place to be investing research or large-scale development dollars. The continued use of something that will be needed long term to feed a growing population would seem to be ill-advised. I would not want to suggest a long term, viable alternative to fossil fuels, but I cannot think biodiesel from edible oils is more than a stop-gap answer, even it costs the taxpayers to be financially sound at the current cost of crude oil. So then I pop by the Western Producer

website and find a story on new equipment targeted at the idea of biomass being procured and used to make fuels – the third connection to the topic in a matter of days. The article reports the first of three projects opened last week, the Poet-DSM cellulosic corn stover plant at Emmetsburg, Iowa. The facility is expected to produce 20 million gallons annually. “Dupont’s 30 million gallon facility at Nevada, Iowa, is near completion, and the Spanish company Abengoa expects to be in production by year’s end at Hugonton, Kansas,” continued the article. “Close to a million tonnes a year of biomass will be required at the facilities, according to company website.” A two-stage conversion is involved, with sugars produced from the biomass subsequently converted into ethanol. The idea of biomass has greater potential since there are sources, which are currently waste products, from corn stalks to the material left in forestry operations, to urban landfill. To utilize waste in a manner to create energy is certainly more attractive than consuming food for the same purpose.

The Bruins lost both games of their northern road swing on the weekend, falling 6-3 to the Flin Flon Bombers on Friday and 3-1 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves the next night. Estevan is now 1-4 on the year entering tomorrow’s home game against the Melville Millionaires (7:30 p.m., Affinity Place). “We’re definitely disappointed in our record. I thought for the most part we carried the play in that game. The difference was they were able to bury a high percentage of their chances. We weren’t even close. We missed a pile of open nets,” said Lewgood. Shots on goal were 3635 for Estevan. The Ice Wolves went 2-for-3 on the power play, and Lewgood said the Bruins’ penalty kill needs to improve. “We’ve gotta be better on the penalty kill. Missed assignments that way hurt us a little. But it basically comes down to finishing and not finishing.” On Friday, the Bruins and Bombers were tied 3-3 after two periods, but the Bombers scored three unanswered goals in the third,

serving a life sentence for killing and dismembering his wife in British Columbia. He was brought before a judge in June to face the charge in the death of Letandre and tried for the first time to plead guilty, but the judge gave him a month to reconsider his decision not to hire a lawyer. Andretti refused to meet with a lawyer several times and in July told Judge Tim Preston he understood the case against him and wanted to plead guilty, but was told the matter needed to be heard in a different court. On Tuesday, the judge this time ruled the matter will have to be moved to Court of Queen’s Bench. Andretti, 38, was charged in Letandre’s murder while in prison in B.C. Letandre, who was 37 and originally from Pinaymootang First Nation, was reported missing by her sister in 2006. Her remains weren’t found in a Winnipeg rooming house until May 2013. Police alleged she was in a relationship with An-

Her relatives have said they tried to tell police about Andretti at the time of her disappearance and police have said he was questioned but let go. Andretti was given a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for at least 25 years in April after admitting to the first-degree murder of his wife, Jennifer McPherson, who was also a longtime Winnipeg resident. The couple had been living there as caretakers of a remote fishing resort called the Pacific Outback Resort. Andretti was arrested following an investigation by Project Devote, a unit made up of RCMP and Winnipeg police officers. Police said they worked with Vancouver’s homicide unit, but waited for them to complete their investigation before bringing their own charges.

Palestinians ask UN Security Council to set deadline of November 2016 for Israeli withdrawal

The Palestinians are asking the U.N. Security Council to set a deadline of November 2016 for an Israeli withdrawal from all Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 including East Jerusalem. The circulation of the draft resolution to council members follows Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ announcement to the U.N. General Assembly last Friday that he would ask the council to set a deadline for a pullout and dictate the ground rules for any talks with Israel. The draft resolution, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, would affirm the Security Council’s determination to contribute to attaining a peaceful solution

that ends the Israeli occupation “without delay” and fulfills the vision of two states, “an independent, sovereign, democratic, contiguous and viable state of Palestine” living side by side with Israel in peace and security in borders based on those before the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinian quest for Security Council action is likely to face an uphill struggle in the U.N.’s most powerful body where the United States, Israel’s closest ally, has veto power and has used it to block many Palestinian-related resolutions. U.S. U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power, asked Tuesday about Abbas’ call for a deadline for Israeli withdrawal, said:

“We strongly believe that the only way of a negotiated solution is through negotiations between the two parties.” The resolution calls for intensified efforts, including through negotiations, to reach a peaceful settlement of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict and “a just resolution” of the status of Jerusalem as the capital of two states and of the Palestinian refugee problem. The new Palestinian strategy to achieve an independent nation follows a 50-day war between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian faction that controls the Gaza Strip, in which more than 2,100 Palestinians were killed, the vast majority civilians

according to the U.N., along with 66 Israeli soldiers and six civilians. The draft resolution calls on the parties to consolidate the Aug. 26 cease-fire agreement that ended the war and refrain from provocative actions, incitement and inflammatory rhetoric, especially with regard to East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as the capital of their independent state. It demands an end to all Israeli military operations and settlement activities, the opening of all border crossings in the Gaza Strip, and deployment of “an international presence” throughout the Palestinian territories to protect Palestinian civilians.

Florida man convicted of 1st-degree murder for killing teenager after argument over loud music JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A jury convicted a Florida man on Wednesday of first-degree murder in his retrial for killing a teenager after an argument over loud music. Prosecutors said Michael Dunn shot with intent to kill when he fired 10 times into a sports utility vehicle carrying 17-year-

old Jordan Davis and three of his friends in November 2012. The jury reached its verdict after more than five hours of deliberations. Dunn, who took the stand in his own defence, said he fired in self-defence. He told jurors that he saw Davis flash what he believed to be a rifle after the two exchanged words

outside a convenience store. Investigators never found a gun in the SUV or in the nearby area, and Davis’ three friends testified that there was no gun. Dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted second-degree murder in February and faced at least 60 years in prison. The jury

Before the verdict, Davis’ parents, Ron Davis and Lucia McBath, said they never expect to hear condolences from Dunn. “Ron and I don’t expect that he’ll ever apologize to us, you know, and that’s not even a concern of ours because we know that we raised a good human being,” McBath said.

sion while carrying a knife. A lawyer for Omar J. Gonzalez’s lawyer, David Bos, entered the plea on his client’s behalf in a 20-minute proceeding that grew contentious because of a disagreement between Bos and U.S. Magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson. Wearing a standard prison-issue orange jump suit, Gonzalez sat attentively at the defence table but did not address the court. Robinson wants Gonzalez to undergo a forensic screening to determine whether he is competent to stand trial. Bos opposed that, telling reporters he does not want to provide the government with an extensive amount of information about his client that would be revealed by a forensic screening. Bos said Gonzalez is

competent to stand trial, an assertion that marked the start of a dispute over whether Gonzalez will have to undergo the screening. A three-count federal grand jury indictment issued Tuesday accuses Gonzalez of unlawfully entering a restricted building while carrying a deadly weapon, a federal charge. He also was indicted in the Sept. 19 incident on two violations of District of Columbia law — carrying a dangerous weapon outside a home or business and unlawful possession of ammunition. Following Gonzalez’s arrest, investigators recovered more than 800 rounds of ammunition, a machete and two hatchets in his car. The indictment said the ammunition consisted of eight types, including 12 gauge shotgun shells and .45 calibre rounds.

Liberian leaders in Texas warn against Ebola panic DALLAS - The first case of Ebola diagnosed in the U.S. has been confirmed in a man who recently travelled from Liberia to Dallas, sending chills through the area’s West African community whose leaders urged caution to prevent spreading the virus. The unidentified man was critically ill and has been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, federal health officials said Tuesday. They would not reveal his nationality or age. Authorities have begun tracking down family, friends and anyone else who may have come in close contact with him and could be at risk. Officials said there are no other suspected cases in Texas. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Director Tom Frieden said the man left Liberia on Sept. 19, arrived the next day to visit relatives and started feeling ill four or five days later. Frieden said it was not clear how the man became infected. “I have no doubt that we’ll stop this in its tracks in the U.S. But I also have no doubt that — as long as the outbreak continues in Africa — we need to be on our guard,” Frieden said, adding that it was possible someone who has had contact with the man could develop Ebola in the coming weeks. “But there is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here,” he said. Stanley Gaye, president of the Liberian Community Association of Dallas-Fort Worth, said the 10,000-strong Liberian

population in North Texas is skeptical of the CDC’s assurances because Ebola has ravaged their country. “We’ve been telling people to try to stay away from social gatherings,” Gaye said at a community meeting Tuesday evening. Large get-togethers are a prominent part of Liberian culture. “We need to know who it is so that they (family members) can all go get tested,” Gaye told The Associated Press. “If they are aware, they should let us know.” Ebola symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, vomiting and bleeding, and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure to the virus. The disease is not contagious until symptoms begin, and it takes close contact with bodily fluids to spread. The association’s vice-president encouraged all who may have come in contact with the virus to visit a doctor and she warned against alarm in the community. “We don’t want to get a panic going,” said vice-president Roseline Sayon. “We embrace those people who are coming forward. Don’t let the stigma keep you from getting tested.” Frieden said he didn’t believe anyone on the same flights as the patient was at risk. “Ebola doesn’t spread before someone gets sick and he didn’t get sick until four days after he got off the airplane,” Frieden said. Four American aid workers who became infected in West Africa have been

flown back to the U.S. for treatment after they became sick. They were treated in special isolation facilities at hospitals in Atlanta and Nebraska. Three have recovered. A U.S. doctor exposed to the virus in Sierra Leone is under observation in a similar facility at the National Institutes of Health. The U.S. has only four such isolation units, but Frieden said there was no need to move the latest patient because virtually any hospital can provide the proper care and infection control. The man, who arrived in the U.S. on Sept. 20, began to develop symptoms last Wednesday and sought care two days later. But he was released. At the time, hospital officials didn’t know he had been in West Africa. He returned later as his condition worsened. Blood tests by Texas health officials and the CDC separately confirmed his Ebola diagnosis on Tuesday. State health officials described the patient as seriously ill. Goodman said he was able to communicate and was hungry. The hospital is discussing if experimental treatments would be appropriate, Frieden said. Since the summer months, U.S. health officials have been preparing for the possibility that an individual traveller could

Secret Service chief resigns WASHINGTON - Secret Service Director Julia Pierson has resigned amid security lapses at the White House. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Wednesday that Pierson offered her resignation, and he accepted it. The move came one day after her appearance before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in a congressional hearing focused on recent security lapses at the White House. Pierson had worked at the Secret Service for 30

years. The White House says President Barack Obama believes it was in the best interest of the Secret Service for Pierson to resign. White House spokesman Josh Earnest says Obama concluded that new leadership of the agency was required. He says Obama called Pierson on Wednesday to thank her for her service to the Secret Service and to the U.S. Earnest says Obama has full confidence in Joseph Clancy. He’s the former special agent taking over as acting Secret Service director.

Pierson’s resignation comes after a man with a knife made it deep into the White House. House Oversight Committee member Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah lead the questioning of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson as the committee examined details surrounding a security breach at the White House when a man climbed over a fence, sprinted across the north lawn and dash deep into the executive mansion before finally being subdued, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, on Capitol Hill in Washington.

unknowingly arrive with the infection. Health authorities have advised hospitals on how to prevent the virus from spreading within their facilities. People boarding planes in the outbreak zone are checked for fever, but that does not guarantee that an infected person won’t get through. Liberia is one of the three hardest-hit countries in the epidemic, along with Sierra Leone and Guinea. Ebola is believed to have sickened more than 6,500 people in West Africa, and more than 3,000 deaths have been linked to the disease, according to the World Health Organization. But even those tolls are probably underestimates, partially because there are not enough labs to test people for Ebola. Two mobile Ebola labs staffed by American naval researchers arrived this weekend and will be operational this week, according to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia. The labs will reduce the amount of time it takes to learn if a patient has Ebola from several days to a few hours. The U.S. military also delivered equipment to build a 25-bed clinic that will be staffed by American health workers and will treat doctors and nurses who have become infected. The U.S. is planning to build 17 other clinics in Liberia and will help train more health workers to staff them. • Souris Valley Pipeline Limited operates a High Pressure Carbon Dioxide Pipeline in Southeast Saskatchewan, a component of the gas is Hydrogen Sulde (H2S). • As a member of Sask 1st Call, Souris Valley Pipeline would like to remind you to call Sask 1st Call at 1-866828-4888. • Statistics show that a signicant cause of pipeline ruptures is due to third party damage.

International News

Royals run wild in thriller, rally past A’s 9-8 in 12 innings in first playoff game since ‘85 KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Back in the playoffs after 29 years, the Kansas City Royals ran wild and outlasted Oakland in a thrilling opener to baseball’s post-season. Salvador Perez singled home the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning, capping two late comebacks that gave Kansas City a 9-8 victory Tuesday night in the AL wild-card game. Quite a start to October baseball — even if this one appeared to be over with plenty of time to spare in September. But in a back-and-forth epic that lasted 4 hours, 45 minutes, the A’s lost their seventh straight winner-take-all playoff game since 2000. It was the final collapse in a season that looked so promising this summer. “This will go down as the craziest game I’ve ever played,” said Eric Hosmer, who sparked the final Royals rally with a one-out triple. “This team showed a lot of character. No one

believed in us before the game. No one believed in us before the season.” Making their first post-season appearance since winning the 1985 World Series, the Royals are sticking around. They’ll open their bestof-five AL Division Series on the road Thursday night against the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels. After falling behind by four runs, the Royals raced back with their speed on the bases — they led the majors with 153 steals this season. Kansas City swiped seven bags in this one to tie a post-season record previously shared by the 1907 Chicago Cubs and 1975 Cincinnati Reds, according to STATS. The biggest one came in the 12th. Hosmer scored the tying run on a high chopper to third by rookie Christian Colon, who reached safely on the infield single and then stole second with two outs. Perez, who was 0 for 5 after squandering two

late chances to drive in key runs, reached out and pulled a one-hopper past diving third baseman Josh Donaldson. Colon scored easily, and the Royals rushed out of the dugout for a mad celebration. Sitting upstairs in a suite, Royals Hall of Famer George Brett put his hands on his head in near disbelief at the frenzied scene that was unfolding below. “We wanted to use our legs,” Hosmer said. “We’re an athletic team, and we stuck to that.” The A’s raced out to a 7-3 lead by the sixth inning, but the Royals countered with three runs in the eighth. Nori Aoki’s sacrifice fly off Sean Doolittle in the ninth forced extra innings. Kansas City squandered chances in the next couple of innings, as midnight came and went on the East Coast and the tension continued to build. Rookie left-hander Brandon Finnegan, just drafted in June, pitched two scoreless innings but walked Josh

Reddick to start in the 12th. Pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo delivered an RBI single off Jason Frasor to put the A’s ahead 8-7. Hosmer hit a drive high off the left-centre wall against Dan Otero for a leadoff triple in the bottom half, and Colon drove him in with a bouncer that barely travelled 50 feet. That set the stage for Perez, who lined a pitch from Jason Hammel just inside the third-base line. “They finally got ahead there in the 30th inning or whatever it was,” said Brandon Moss, who drove in five runs with two homers for Oakland. “That was definitely the best baseball game I’ve ever been a part of.” The long-suffering Royals hadn’t played in the post-season since beating St. Louis in the 1985 World Series, and the excitement the permeated the city might best be summed up by a statement posted by the Kansas City Police on Twitter in about the 10th inning: “We really need

everyone to not commit crimes and drive safely right now. We’d like to hear the Royals clinch.” For the A’s, it was a stunning and heartbreaking finish. They had the best record in baseball before wilting in the second half, and needed a victory on the final day of the regular season just to squeeze into the playoffs. Oakland had chances to put all that in the past. Instead, the season ended abruptly for a team that has failed over and over again in the post-season. “It’s kind of a microcosm of the year that we had,” Doolittle said. A much-anticipated pitching showdown between Oakland ace Jon Lester and Kansas City counterpart James Shields instead turned into a highscoring game and a battle of attrition between bullpens. “It was absolutely epic,” Shields said. “You don’t write a story like that.” Doolittle tried to save

it for Oakland in the ninth, but he gave up a bloop single to pinch-hitter Josh Willingham. Pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson was sacrificed to second and then brashly stole third, allowing him to score on Aoki’s deep fly to right field. It was the third time in the last three seasons that Doolittle has blown a post-season save. UP NEXT Yost had refused to discuss who he might pitch in the opener against the Angels. The two best bets are vastly different options: Danny Duffy is a young, hard-throwing left-hander who plays on passion, Jeremy Guthrie is a cerebral right-hander who relies on guile. TRAINER’S ROOM Oakland C Geovany Soto left the game after hurting his left thumb tagging Hosmer at the plate to end the first inning. Post-season BLUES The A’s haven’t won a playoff series since sweeping Minnesota in the 2006 ALDS.
