Fun of Halloween lost over the years Sometimes I’m way too old for my own good. That’s just the case when it comes to Halloween. There isn’t much for me to get excited about when Oct. 31 rolls around each year. Halloween is a day of things that really turn me off, from the orange and black colour schemes to the vast amounts of cheap and sugary sweets. I have no sweet tooth. I’d take a regular apple over a candy apple any day. Worst of all, if there is anything that could possibly make me uncomfortable it’s dressing up in a costume. Halloween then becomes an awkward catch 22, where I’m uncomfortable if I dress up in some embarrassing outfit, but feel just as out of place as the lone soul wearing slacks and a fall jacket at a gathering where everyone else is dressed up in their best cosplay outfits, ready for a night of pretending to be somebody else, and definitely somebody who is better than themselves. There aren’t many more pointless special days than Halloween. I get it. It’s supposed to be fun and a night when people can dress up, get together and enjoy the company of other people. The cynic in me says it’s an excuse for the candy companies to sell us chocolate,
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers like Christmas is an excuse for companies in all pockets of our economy to finally make some money in the suffocating spirit of giving. A quick look online associates observances such as church services, prayer, fasting and vigils, but I’ve never heard of any of those things in connection with Halloween. I can’t imagine how fasting and pillow cases full of chocolate ever got tangled into one giant mess of an event, but it sounds like nobody else really knows what Halloween is all about either. Other people have little clue as to the point and purpose of this strangest of all special days, not including Broccoli Day as noted by Calvin Daniels in the column below. A woman I know is facing a Halloween dilemma, having been the driving force of her kids’ costumes in the past. No longer can she find something for her two daugh-
ters to wear. Now those kids want to dress up as something particular, and her costume suggestions have dipped into lame territory. Her costume ideas are finally out of touch with what the kids are wearing these days, and her kids finally reached an age where they’ve developed a desire to dress themselves and that means trick-or-treating as princesses, not cowgirls. The first time I decided for myself what I would be wearing while I disturbed the neighbours’ dinners with my obnoxious knocking and demands for candy, I wanted to be a ninja turtle. My mom toiled for weeks creating that hideous and enormous green turtle suit. With my aversion to dressing up in costumes, the thought of it makes me cringe even though I know I was just an idiot kid who wanted to look awesome as I tried to score some of those extra large chocolate bars that only one or two houses would be handing out that year. Nobody would like to enjoy Halloween more than I would, but it’s no longer an evening I can draw much pleasure, because as the saying goes, I’m 26 going on 66. Hopefully everyone can find themselves enjoying the happiest of Halloweens.
Let’s give a little respect to World Food Day If there is one thing the world has far too many of, it’s days being proclaimed to mark everything from Veteran’s Day to International Broccoli Day. Some, such as Veteran’s Day are obviously worthwhile endeavours. However in a world where we have a day to a vegetable that many of us push to the edge of the plate rather than eat it, really lessens the impact of the days we should pause to actually think about. And so, World Food Day came and went Oct. 16 with little fanfare, and I surmise with most people unaware the Wednesday had any special significance associated with it. “Established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1979, World Food Day, October 16, was first observed in 1981. Organizations around the world mobilize advocacy campaigns and events on October 16 to strengthen the political will to end hunger. World Food Day offers the opportunity to strengthen national and international solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and draw attention to achievements in food security and agricultural development,” details the World Food Day website (www.worldfooddayusa.org). According to the website, this year the event celebrated “the achievements made toward food security and the work that must continue to finally end world hunger. We join together, as one movement, to raise awareness of the unequal access to food and production
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist resources that permeate across our current food systems. Above all else, we work in solidarity to create and spread the political will that promises nutritious food for everyone, everywhere.” When you think about things that we as a collective society should occasionally pause to really think about, then how we ensure no one goes to bed hungry should be very high up the list. It cannot be overlooked that World Food Day is sandwiched on the calender between Thanksgiving days in both Canada and the United States. The roots of Thanksgiving come from taking a day each fall to give thanks for the crops grown and harvested. It is marked by most of us with tables full of turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. It is about as far away from going hungry as you can get. Yet many do just that in our world, go hungry. World Food Day is supposed to be the day we give a bit of extra thought about how our world can better share its food so that everyone has a reason for, and the means to, a
Thanksgiving feast. Of course, that is really the issue, how to get food to the hungry. While we may live in an era where we start to question whether farmers will be able to produce enough food to feed the growing masses, so far production is not the problem. The money to purchase food, and the infrastructure and security to transport, store and distribute the food to all is. The problems are ones that lend relevancy to this year’s World Food Day theme: Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition. “To live in a world free of hunger, we must create food systems that ensure a plentiful supply of nutritious food with minimal impact on our environment. Our food systems must consider sustainability in every step of the supply chain: from production to processing, transportation to retail, and consumption to post-consumption waste. Without a focus on sustainability, our food system may not produce the healthy, nutritious food that we all deserve and that our children deserve, too,” notes the website. The vision is a worthy one, and one farmers should already believe in as the growers of food. And so, amid the many days tagged for this and that, World Food Day is one we should actually pay attention too and hope its vision soon becomes a reality, so hunger becomes a thing of the past.

Students learn with others across the country There’s nothing quite like a practical science lesson to open up a students’ sense of wonder and exploration. Students at St. Mary’s School participated in a lesson with about 15 other schools from across the country. All schools completed the lesson at the same time as they were seeking to establish a world record for the largest practical science lesson at multiple locations. The event started with a video featuring Canadian astronaut and former International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield. The Oct. 18 event also launched the 2013 National Science and Technology Week. “This experiment is a great opportunity to introduce and explore topics like the properties of air, gravity, the solar system, flight and atmospheric science,” said Agnes Plourde-Doran, the St. Mary’s teacher who organized and presented the lesson. “They’ll be exploring gravity with paper airplanes.” The students had to assemble more than 200 paper airplanes, three each for all of the 70 participating students in Grades 5 through 7. The students would test an Earth plane, designed with full wings; a moon plane, featuring no wings; and a Mars plane, constructed with two sheets of paper and wings that were cut in half. With the planes folded and weighted differently, they demonstrate the changes

The science experiment gave students an inside look at a number of different mechanics, as they observed gravity, atmosphere and lift. The atmosphere allows planes to generate lift, so while testing the wingless moon plane students observed

fun as well,” said Plourde-Doran. The school needed outside observers to document the number of students and to time the event. St. John the Baptist Church’s Father Brian Meredith and Connie Wheeler registered each student as they entered the school’s gymnasium for the lesson, while former teacher Gary St. Onge kept careful watch over the clock.

National MONTREAL - Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall is expected to miss four weeks of action after suffering a left knee injury in a game last Saturday. General manager Craig MacTavish confirmed the injury timeline Tuesday morning through a post on the team’s Twitter feed. Hall, the first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, has three goals and five assists in nine games this season. He was hurt on an innocentlooking play in Edmonton’s 3-1 win at Ottawa. Hall was just inside the Senators’ blue-line when he turned and hobbled to the bench. So we’ll look for him when he’s healed and ready. It’s time for other people to grasp opportunity.” Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov skated as a line at the team’s morning skate ahead of Tuesday night’s road game against the Canadiens. International CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Miami’s football team will lose nine scholarships and the men’s basketball team will lose three, as part of the penalties the school was handed Tuesday by the NCAA as the Nevin Shapiro scandal presumably drew to a close. But for the first time since 2010, the football team will be permitted to appear in a post-season game. The school will also serve three years probation. Former men’s basketball coach Frank Haith, now at Missouri, will sit out the first five games of his team’s season, and three former Miami assistant coaches were handed two-year show-cause
bans. Even though the NCAA said Miami lacked “institutional control” when it came to monitoring Shapiro, the university is accepting the decision and does not plan to appeal. *** VATICAN CITY - The Vatican served tea and cucumber sandwiches Tuesday as it launched its first cricket club, an initiative aimed at forging ties with teams of other faiths. No, Pope Francis isn’t taking up the sport long associated with manicured grounds and English nobility; the soccer-mad “slum pope” still prefers the lower-brow sport of his beloved San Lorenzo club. But he and the Vatican have long championed sports as good for mind, body and soul, and the cricket club is the latest initiative of the Vatican’s culture ministry to use sports to engage in dialogue with the contemporary world. Australia’s ambassador to the Holy See, John McCarthy, was the brainchild
behind the initiative and said he hopes the St. Peter’s Cricket Club will field a team to play the Church of England at Lord’s sometime next fall. He said the aim is to boost interfaith dialogue, given cricket’s immense popularity in largely nonCatholic India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It would be a “very special occasion” if seminarians from Rome’s pontifical universities might one day play students at Muslim or Hindu religious schools on the subcontinent, he said. The initiative also is aimed at educating Italy, the Vatican and even Pope Francis that “there is some sport other than football!” he said before passing around a tray of cucumber tea sandwiches, a mainstay of cricket events. The club is expected to count on some 250-300 students and priests at the Vatican and various pontifical universities around Rome where cricket is already being played informally; from these individual teams a Vatican one would be selected and fielded as early as the spring.

Civil liberties suing Canada’s spy agency National CALGARY - The Conference Board of Canada says workers in Alberta and Saskatchewan will fare the best with wage increases next year largely due to a shortage of qualified employees in the energy
sector. Board vice-president Ian Cullwick says frenzied resource development and a shortage of trained workers means that Alberta and Saskatchewan will lead the way next year with average increases of 3.7 per cent.
At the bottom of the scale is Atlantic Canada at 2.5 per cent and Ontario at 2.6 per cent. Cullwick says the oil and gas sector will see the highest average increase at 4.1 per cent while healthcare workers are at the low

end at 1.8 per cent. Nationally, pay increases for non-unionized workers is projected to be 2.9 per cent in 2014, which is in line with numbers from this year. Cullwick says while Canada’s economy is in relatively good shape, growth has been sluggish and organizations will be looking at ways of keeping costs down. *** OTTAWA - A civil liberties watchdog is suing Canada’s electronic spy agency for allegedly breaching the constitutional rights of Canadians. Civil Liberties Association says Communications Security Establishment Canada violates the Charter of Rights by intercepting Canadians’ private communications. The organization filed the lawsuit in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Ottawa-based CSEC monitors foreign communications — from email and phone calls to faxes and satellite transmissions — for intelligence of interest to Canada. CSEC says it operates within all Canadian laws, including the charter, the Criminal Code, the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Privacy Act. The National Security Agency, CSEC’s American counterpart, is at the centre of a storm of leaks from former contractor Edward Snowden that document the U.S. agency’s vast reach into cyberspace. International ATHENS, Greece A top Greek prosecutor on Tuesday ordered an emergency nationwide investigation into birth certificates issued in the past six years after a girl was discovered living with alleged abductors at a gypsy camp. Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani ordered the inquiry for birth certificates issued after Jan. 1, 2008, amid news media reports of benefit fraud by families declaring births in multiple regions. Experts have used the case to point out the severe weaknesses in the
country’s birth registration system. A couple has been jailed on charges of abduction and document fraud in the case of the girl known only as “Maria.” The girl, believed to be 5 or 6, was taken into protective care last week after DNA tests established the couple was not her biological parents. The case has triggered international interest in missing children, with the girl’s DNA entered into a database held by the international law enforcement agency Interpol to check for matches. On Monday, the mayor of Athens ordered the suspension of three officials in charge of record-keeping. New parents have three months to declare their newborns. Investigators in Athens found a large number of babies had been recently declared at or near the end of that deadline, sending up a red flag because they suspected some were multiple declarations to claim benefits. The two suspects, aged 39 and 40, deny the abduction allegations, claiming they received the child from a destitute woman to bring up as their own. Authorities allege the female suspect claimed to have given birth to six children in less than 10 months, while 10 of the 14 children the couple had registered as their own are unaccounted for. Police say the two suspects received about 2,500 euros ($3,420) a month in subsidies from three different cities.

The market will be staged in Exhibition Hall on the Exhibition grounds, not the Wylie-Mitchell Hall as reported. Small business owners save time and money by shipping online (NC) According to Statistics Canada, in 2011, small businesses made up 48 per cent of Canada's total workforce. Often referred to as the backbone of Canada's economy, it's no surprise that small business owners are always looking for ways to run their businesses more efficiently. Many operating tasks performed by a small business, such as accounting, payroll and shipping, can be done quickly online. Shipping tasks, for example, need not be complex and can be completed in just a few clicks. “Purolator's online shipping processes allow our customers more time to focus on other more pressing business needs,” said Alison Spehar, Purolator Inc.'s Small Business Marketing Manager. “Businesses can look forward to reaping greater efficiencies in the long run by embracing and incorporating information technology into their daily operations.” Here are some online shipping features that some shipping providers offer to small businesses, designed to make their shipping experience pain-free: Scheduling pickup and delivery: Schedule pickups quickly without picking up the telephone. All you need is a computer and Internet access. With online shipping, you can also get estimates and compare rates and delivery times for different services. Track your shipments: This tool keeps you on top of things. With a tracking number
or reference number, you will have visibility on where your shipments are, anytime you need it, wherever you are. Customized reports: Want to capture your company's shipping patterns? There is no need to record every shipment you make in your books. Purolator's online shipping system for example, automatically captures your shipping activity each time you create a shipment, allowing you to create customized shipping activity reports. Validating shipping address information: With the shipping address validation tool, you'll reduce the chances of errors associated with handwritten shipping
waybills. Based on the postal code you enter, the address auto population tool will be able to auto-populate the street name,, city and province, without you having to input the data yourself. Live agent at your disposal: Have a question on shipping? There is no need to burn your ears holding on the handset. Some shippers offer a live chat service that allows you to chat with a customer service representative in just a few clicks, in real time, so you can get the assistance you need instantaneously.More information about shipping for small business can be found on www.purolator.com.

Small businesses can give back too (NC) When it comes to philanthropy, size doesn't matter. So if you've recently joined the ranks of smallbusiness owner, or you're thinking about setting up shop, there's something pretty important that you likely haven't thought about factoring into your budget: corporate social responsibility (CSR). This buzzword has received lots of attention, in part because Industry Canada promotes CSR programs as a way to make companies “more innovative, productive and competitive.” Both entrepreneurship and CSR are central to the three tycoons behind Spin Master Inc., the successful children's toy and entertainment company. They've teamed up with the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (a non-profit that offers financial support, mentoring and expert advice to budding entrepreneurs ages of 18 and 39) to create the Spin Master Innovation Fund, a program that helps hopeful businesspeople turn their big ideas into reality. Although CSR is still seen as something that multibillion-dollar organizations open their pockets for, it can include
anything a business – local or global, small or large – can do to give back to and better their employees and communities.“For small businesses and start-ups, giving back to the community or a particular charity may be difficult due to the shortage of funds, but it is possible to still participate in charitable giving,” says entrepreneur Wael Badawy, the President and Founder of Calgary-based IntelliView Technologies, and a CYBF mentor to aspiring moguls. Other ways corporations can implement CSR programs include offering materials or services, sending experts to offer time and skill, and assisting with fundraising. If you're ready to get involved, take a page out of communication giant TELUS' book – in 2012, in addition to their monetary donations, the company connected their employees with charities in need of assistance, and supports non-profits like The Canadian Youth Business Foundation to help young entrepreneurs succeed in business, including volunteering their time for one-on-one business mentoring. This in turn helps create even more socially responsible small businesses.
