Cheers to the fabulous job done on Souris Avenue. It has been worth the wait.
Cheers to the guys who upped their game, were a bit creative, and made the police report a bit more entertaining. A nice break from the usual drunk in a parking lot wandering around aimlessly lodged until sober fare we’ve become so accustomed to. For the sake of cabbies and hotel facilities workers everywhere I only hope this doesn’t inspire a string of copycats. Cheers to all the activities throughout October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Cheers to PAHC for their petting zoo and barbecue that raised money for the Estevan Humane Society.
Watch for The Butler and The Family opening October 11!

Jeers to the local gas company for closing their doors for bill payments. You have no customer service other than the phone, which is usually a lengthy wait. Hi my name is Mitzy! I am a very young, brown and black, long haired Chihuahua cross. I came in from the Kipling area. I love everyone. I am just a happy go lucky little girl.
Do you know me? I was found on the highway between Outram and Torquay September 23.
These 3 little orphans will be ready for adoption in 3 weeks. We have had them since they were about 4 days old. All 3 of the little monkeys are doing great!

The newfound Estevan Sikh Society caters to roughly 200 members of the community. (Submitted Photo)
Sikh community builds life in southeast They’re a growing part of the Energy City’s cultural landscape, and the Estevan Sikh Society expects its members to be vital citizens in the city’s future. It was in July that the society, representing between 150 and 200 Sikhs in the Estevan community, became a recognized non-profit organization. Manpreet Sangha is a member of the Estevan Sikh Society and works as the economic development officer at the Estevan Chamber of Commerce. “In July, a group of about 200 people sat together, and we propagated this idea that we should be formulating a Sikh society,” said Sangha. There are Sikh temples in Regina and Saskatoon where locals will travel for worship, but there is no place in Estevan for the Sikh community to practise their faith. The society feels it’s important to create a place of worship that can accommodate the growing number of Sikhs in the city. “One of the goals is to build a temple here, because the community plans to stay in Estevan for the long term,” said Sangha. As a non-profit religious organization, she added that the Estevan Sikh Society stands as a pillar of Sikhism. “The Society is proud to be a part of the cultural mosaic that is Canada, and it wants to promote an attitude of integration, participation and community service.” Sikh societies are becoming more prevalent across the country, but in Saskatchewan, the fraternities are only established in Regina and Saskatoon. Now that they are a certified religious society, Sangha said they are looking to find a centre to rent that they are able to use as a temple. “We’re trying to have the religious prayers at one of the residences owned by people in our community,” she said. “For those who do have houses we try to have religious prayers in one of those houses.” With upwards of 200 Sikhs interested in worshipping as a collective whole each month, those get-togethers can fill a house very quickly. Sangha said the local Sikh society is an open one, and people of all faiths are welcome to join them during any of their meetings. “Our main motive is the noble deeds, to help others and
to have the cycle of compassion and goodwill be continuous,” she added. She said the Indian community in Estevan is larger than the area’s Sikhs. She said it’s important to remember that while Sikhism is an Indian faith, not all Indians identify as Sikhs. Sikhism is a faith founded in the 15th Century by Guru Nanak in the region of Punjab. The faith follows the teachings in the Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The society has developed a brochure that explains a little about what Sikhs believe. Sikhs value truth, contentment, compassion, humility, equality and love. Members of the Sikh community have flocked to Estevan in recent years for employment. “Just in the last two years, we’ve become a population of 200. I still remember there were two families in 2010 or 2011, just two families belonging to the Sikh community, staying here in Estevan,” said Sangha. She said a family came to the area from Ontario, and after that, there was a referral line, where different families and acquaintances would inform others of the job opportunities in Estevan. “Most of the jobs, whether they are white collar, mechanical jobs or skilled trades, people from our community are parts of those jobs,” Sangha added. To gain a little more exposure in the city, the local Bhangra team performed a number of dances during the Collage Multicultural Festival, held at the Estevan Leisure Centre over the weekend. They were accompanied by performers from Regina as well. “We were so enthusiastic because we don’t always get too many chances to perform,” said Sangha. She said the society would like to continue to share their heritage with the city, maybe getting involved in an event around Christmas or a time revolving around one of their festivals. “We’re trying to make our presence felt in the community. It’s a small community. There’s a lot of love and compassion amongst the people. People are really looking to stay here in the long term,” said Sangha. The Estevan Sikh Society is active on social media and can be found on Facebook for those looking to learn more about the group.

First impressions are overrated With Collage held last weekend hosted by the Southeast Newcomers Service, it got me thinking about a newcomer’s first impressions of Estevan. As something of a foreigner myself — some people think Ontario is another planet, I’ve heard Ontario is the sarcastic centre of the universe a number of times — I have my own first impression of Estevan, albeit one that isn’t entirely flattering. It was probably easier for me to acclimatize to the Energy City as a Canadian. I was going from one place to a new one with nearly identical customs and culture. I arrived in Estevan after driving 12 hours that day. I drove 12 hours the day before. But I arrived, like a refugee, with everything I own on my back. Well, a Canadian refugee has the luxury of having all his personal belongings in his car and a job lined up to start right away. Sure, I didn’t have a place to stay, but how hard could that be? I saw hotels and motels all over the place. They were, of course, all full. I rolled up to a hotel, seeing there were no vacancies, but maybe they just never updated their sign or use the no vacancy message to discourage some of the riffraff. I’ve been to a restaurant that put a reserved sign on every table in the place, whether they were reserved or not, and if the owner didn’t like the look of you he just shooed you out the door. We got shooed.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers I approached the front desk and got an affirmative from the woman working it that they were, in fact, full, or she at least sized me up as potential riff-raff. As a tired person who was a minute or two away from asking if I could just lie down on the lobby couch until morning, I explained that every place in this town appeared full. Did she have any suggestions? I pleaded for some assistance because I had no energy to help myself any longer. She said she would call around to other places and started dialing numbers. I was very grateful for her effort. After three or four phone calls and no good news, she told me that was it for places of comparable quality. She offered to make some more calls while warning me that the search will only bring back places of a seedier nature. She didn’t say “seedier.” It was clear she didn’t want to give me false expectations of quality and cleanliness, while also not badmouthing another business in the community or sending me screaming down the highway
and away from Estevan as fast as I could go. I told her I was either sleeping in a dirty room with heat or I would be sleeping in my car, so I was open to any place with a mattress. I’ve slept in some weird places before. I’ve spent months hopping from one hostel to another, sometimes sharing a room with 30 other people. I could deal with whatever Estevan threw at me. I ended up laying my head down at a place that wasn’t exactly ritzy or lavish. Sure it was priced like a first-class resort, but the price didn’t fool me into thinking I was getting complimentary room service. It was fine. I figured as part of my exorbitant sleeping costs I must also be receiving a pretty standup, one-night only health-care plan through the motel. I noticed a pointy piece of glass in the snow with electrical tape wrapped around one end like a grip. I assumed it was a prison shiv that escaped with its inmate craftsman who I would probably be bunking next to. As a tired guy, I thought I’d just stay in my room, not step on anybody’s toes and ultimately do whatever was necessary to avoid being stabbed with glass. The sun came up the next morning, and I got to work finding a new place to stay. I don’t want to say a better place exactly, but a different place … different in a good way.
Genetically modified foods still get bad rap When I pursue agriculture news I’m always drawn to read anything about genetically modified crops. The most recent example was when I took a look through the fall 2013 edition of The Union Farmer, the quarterly publication of the National Farmers Union (NFU). The issue contains a rather lengthy look at the NFU’s lobbying effort to stop the introduction of Roundup Ready alfalfa, a GM variety of the crop, which of course would live through an application of the aforementioned weed control product. The position of the NFU of course was not a surprise at all. The organization has remained solidly against GM technology from the start, and that position remains. But the article’s existence, more than its content, is what interested me. It illustrates how the debate about GM technology is an ongoing one and is becoming one of entrenched positions with limited capacity for movement. It really breaks along two lines, one of science and the other of emotion. On the science side there is simply the thinking that if something beneficial can be developed, it should be. Certainly what is created must be safe, but that determination must come after the basic science has taken place. So the first GM crop to be Roundup
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist Ready could only be determined safe after it was in existence. That it has been determined safe then opens the door to more crops to be developed along the same line. We have seen interest in a GM wheat, one which government opposition in other countries where threats of blocking exports were obvious, squashed the development. Now the debate is around alfalfa. The science remains very much the same, so that brings in the element of emotion. If we look at canola, where most of the Canadian crop is a GM variety of one type or another, have we seen health issues as a result? For most, canola remains a preferred oil when it comes to cooking because of the oil profile. Yes there was opposition, again at the political level in other countries, but those were more obviously trade-barrier inspired rather than public health issues. Domestically, the public’s position is a
blurred one. Ask most would you prefer to eat a GM carrot or a non-GM carrot, the answer is likely to be non-GM. The reason for the answer would be one based on emotion because there has been enough media coverage of GM, which implies it is not as good, consumers have gravitated to the other side. It’s the same where most consumers would opt for a non-sprayed food option too. And most would say they prefer locally grown over imported over thousands of miles. But the reality is most of us happily purchase imported and sprayed foods and eat them daily, without a lot of second thought. And so the GM debate will continue. Long term, GM is likely to win out based on need. The ability for such crops to expand cropping regions, help yields, and fight pests and disease, is likely to be too great a benefit to ignore as agriculture feeds a growing populace. Yes, there should be checks in the system to make sure the science is as safe as possible, but that can be said of every microwavable bacon product or energy drink too. In the end though, if the benefits to farmers of a GM alfalfa make economic sense, then it should be an option available to them.

Canadian women call for gender-neutral anthem National OTTAWA - Sen. Carolyn Stewart Olsen is denying a news report that she improperly claimed living expenses. The Conservative senator, who is closely allied with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, says she’s reviewed the expenses in question with Senate finance officials and they’ve found nothing improper. Stewart Olsen’s statement follows a report in The Huffington Post Canada, which alleges that the senator wrongly claimed more than $4,000 for accommodation and meals from December 2010 to February 2011 — even though the Senate was not sitting for most of that time and her calendar showed no public business in Ottawa during that period. The Huffington Post quotes Stewart Olsen as saying she shouldn’t have claimed per diems for days when the Senate wasn’t sitting and promising to repay the money if a mistake was made. However, in a terse statement issued later, she makes no mention of repayment or having erred. Stewart Olsen was a key member of a Senate committee which sat in judgment on the dubious expense claims of four other senators, and recommended that the RCMP be encouraged to investigate the matter. *** TORONTO - A group of notable Canadian women is launching a campaign for gender-neutral language in the English lyrics of O Canada. The group said the change would restore Canada’s English national anthem to its original gender-neutral intentions.
The group — which includes author Margaret Atwood and former prime minister Kim Campbell — has set up a website to promote the idea. It is calling on Canadians to join the campaign and encourage Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government to change the line “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.” The campaign won’t be able to count on the official Opposition for support, however. NDP leader Tom Mulcair said Tuesday in Ottawa that the anthem is “wonderful” and “extraordinary” as it is and shouldn’t be altered when it comes to gender. “I think that when you start tinkering with an institution like a national anthem, that you’re looking for problems,” he said when asked about the proposal. “We seem to have agreed on the English and French versions as they are and I think that’s probably a good thing.” RestoreOurAnthem.ca is being launched on the 100th anniversary of the change made to Judge Robert Stanley Weir’s original English lyrics. International WASHINGTON - Federal workers still had to report to work for about four hours Tuesday even though the government was shutting down. With no late deal averting the midnight Monday shutdown, several federal agencies say employees would be limited to doing work related to the shutdown, including changing voicemail messages, posting an out-of-office message on email, securing work stations and docu-
ments and completing time cards. At the Environmental Protection Agency, for example, employees were told they cannot work on “any projects, tasks, activities or respond to emails.” The Housing and Urban Development Department said it will close its offices at 1:30 p.m. Other agencies, such as the Labor Department, expected most employees to be gone by midday, but haven’t set a specific time. Once they head home, furloughed employees are under strict orders not to do any work. That means no sneaking glances at BlackBerrys or smartphones to check emails, no turning on laptop computers, no checking office voicemail, and no use of any other governmentissued equipment. Office managers are encouraging workers to leave government-issued cellphones and computers in a secure place at the office. Those employees who work from home may find it more difficult to break the habit of checking emails or looking at documents. *** DHAKA, Bangladesh - A special war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh ruled Tuesday that a senior member of the main opposition party should be put to death for his involvement in the killing of hundreds of people during the country’s independence fight against Pakistan in 1971. The verdict against Salauddin Quader
Chowdhury came in a packed courtroom as he stood in the dock amid tight security in the nation’s capital, Dhaka. Fearing a backlash from Bangladesh Nationalist Party supporters, authorities deployed paramilitary forces in southeastern Chittagong district, where Chowdhury was elected to Parliament six times. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the tribunal convicted Chowdhury on nine of 23 charges, including four counts of genocide. Chowdhury was found guilty of aiding and ordering the killing of at least 200 people, mostly minority Hindus, during the war in Chittagong. During the war, Cowdhury’s father was an influential politician of the Muslim League party, which worked to prevent Bangladesh from breaking away from Pakistan. “I think this is a fair trial,” Alam said. “We are happy.” Chowdhury’s wife, Farhat Quader Chowdhury, told reporters immediately after the verdict that her husband would appeal. “We will do whatever we need to do to show the world that this is a farce,” she said. Bangladesh says Pakistani soldiers, aided by local collaborators, killed 3 million people and raped 200,000 women during the nine month war that ended in December 1971. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina set up the tribunal in 2010 to punish the alleged collaborators.

Pan Am committee under heat for ‘unacceptable’ expenses National TORONTO - It is “unacceptable” for highly paid executives with Toronto’s 2015 Pan Am Games organizing committee to bill Ontario taxpayers for things such as a cup of tea, even if it was allowed, Premier Kathleen Wynne said Monday. “It’s ridiculous, okay,” Wynne told reporters. “I’m just going to say it’s ridiculous. It is the kind of entitlement that is unacceptable.” The Progressive Conservatives demanded an auditor general’s investigation after documents obtained by the Toronto Sun showed Pan Am CEO Ian Troop, who is paid $477,000 a year, billed taxpayers for a 91-cent parking ticket. The committee’s senior vice-president, Allen Vansen, billed taxpayers more than $27,000 to move from Vancouver to Toronto, including $110 to transfer a pet. It’s “outrageous” that such well-paid executives were doing exactly what others did at agencies like eHealth Ontario and the Ornge air ambulance service, said Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak. “Premier, you said that you would not follow the same pattern of behaviour or the culture of entitlement of the (former premier) Dalton McGuinty Liberals,” Hudak said in the legislature. “When I think about that kind of gross waste and arrogance, it makes me wonder what is different about Kathleen Wynne. It sounds like the same tune the Liberals have been playing for 10 years.” Wynne agreed some of the Pan Am expenses were out of line, and said the government had already ordered officials to tighten and clarify the rules. *** CALGARY - A roster populated with young players trying to prove themselves in the NHL and a bulging wallet of salarycap space are reasons for the Calgary Flames to feel optimistic on the eve of their NHL season. General manager Jay Feaster and new president of hockey operations Brian Burke spoke to the media Monday ahead of Calgary’s season-opener Thursday in
Washington. After four straight seasons of playofffree hockey, few project the rebuilding Flames as contenders for the post-season in 2013-14. Feaster and Burke were marketing a brand of hard, committed hockey that they believe will both entertain fans and put the Flames on the road to glory. “As Jay has said repeatedly, we were a cap team with star players and did not have success,” said Burke, who was hired Sept. 5. “We are in a different mode going forward. This is a transition that had to take place and is well under way. “We’re not prepared to concede we’re going to struggle yet. “The issue for me is, do we have enough skill? We’re going to find that out.” The average age of Calgary’s opening-day roster announced Monday is just over a year younger than last season’s. Teenage forward Sean Monahan, the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft, will start his season with the Flames. International TORONTO - Hybrid icing will be in effect for the start of the 2013-14 NHL regular season after it was approved by the players. The NHLPA gave the go-ahead for the rule change that makes icing a race to an imaginary line across the faceoff dots instead of the puck, which was given a trial run during the pre-season. The goal is to prevent serious injuries, like the one that sidelined Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Joni Pitkanen for the entire season. Pitkanen broke his left heel bone in eight places on an icing touch-up in April. It’s a similar injury to the one suffered by former Washington Capitals forward Pat Peake, whose career ended not too long after. “After testing hybrid icing during the pre-season games, the players participated in a survey and a majority of teams supported this rule change in an effort to make the game safer,” NHLPA special assistant to the executive director

Mathieu Schneider said in a statement. “We are hopeful that the implementation of the hybrid icing rule, which is a middle ground between the old rule and no-touch icing, will help minimize the incidence of player injuries on icing plays.” Some players seemed happy with the change. “I think it’s good. It kind of brings the race a little bit further away from the end boards,” Toronto Maple Leafs winger James van Riemsdyk said. “Once they do blow it or decide what to do with it, it gives you more time to react.” Others expressed some doubts about hybrid icing, most notably hesitancy or unfamiliarity on the part of the linesman who has to make the call. “The normal reaction is right away ‘Oh, we don’t like it,’” Calgary Flames coach Bob Hartley said. “If the hybrid icing saves one injury this year, it’s worth it.” *** MIAMI - State authorities in Florida have launched a criminal investigation into the now-closed clinic at the centre of Major League Baseball’s latest performance-enhancing drug scandal, a spokesman for Miami-Dade County’s
chief prosecutor said Monday. “A subpoena was issued for documents and we are looking into several areas of state interest,” said Ed Griffith, spokesman for State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. Griffith would not go into further specifics but said the state probe into Biogenesis of America and its former chief, Anthony Bosch, differed from a federal grand jury investigation into the clinic. The federal probe involves the sources of drugs the clinic is accused of selling to players, most notably one-time MVP Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers and longtime star Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. Existence of the state prosecutors’ criminal subpoena was disclosed at a recent hearing of MLB’s lawsuit in Miami against Biogenesis, also pending in Miami-Dade County court. It’s not known who the subpoena targeted or what specific documents are being sought.

Fox Walk
The Estevan Business Expo Showcase took place for the 20th year as thousands of people from the southeast visited the 100 booths set up at Affinity Place last weekend.
The students from Sacred Heart/ Sacré Coeur School took to their neighbourhood streets on Sept. 26 for the annual Terry Fox walk in aid of the Terry Fox Foundation for research into cancer. The students were joined by staff members, parents and friends for the two-kilometre trek.

Brent Wasacase of Immaculate Heart Junior High used a drill to mix the batter when Grade 9 students served pancakes to the Grade 7 students. The serving of the meal was part of the Welcome Week activities held at the school. Other activities included Colour Day, Shin and Shoe Day, Hat and Shades Day, as well as a grudge volleyball match between the teachers and students. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. If you have a photo you think readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Jordan Baker at jbaker@estvanmercury.ca.
