Members of the Estevan Kinette Club were out doing random acts of kindness on Feb. 21 as part of Kin Canada’s National Day of KINdness. The local group performed roughly 200 acts of kindness in the community, including dropping off litter, food and toys at the Estevan Humane Society, playing the piano at seniors centres, distributing Estevan Bruins tickets (donated by the Bruins), handing out sunflower seeds to plant, and taking bags of toiletries to the Salvation Army for the Warm Welcome shelter. From left, Estevan Kinette members Kathryn Gillis, Janelle Luddington, and Melanie and Isla Tribiger present goods to staff at the Estevan Public Library. Photo submitted.

Correction In last week’s edition of The Trader, in the Agri News section an error of omission appeared in the story that listed the previous winners of the Farm Family of the Year Award. It is to be noted that in 2008 there were cowinners of the award that went to the Fleck family. Dennis and Sylvia Fleck along with Wade and Heidi Fleck of Lampman were presented with dual awards and recognition that evening. Dennis and Sylvia Fleck’s names had not appeared on the award list Agri News received from the Farmer Appreciation committee’s historical records and we regret their omission.

It’s a familiar scene at the movie theatres. The lights dim, people hustle in and out of the theatre to get a last-second snack or beverage, and before the feature presentation begins, we are bombarded with theatrical trailers. These two-and-a-half minute movies often stir the audience with their dramatic music, intense action and carefully selected scenes that display just the perfect amount of dialogue and story. After each one is played, a subtle wave of discussion takes place among all those in attendance. We speculate, discuss and critique. I find myself enjoying the speculation aspect the most. In fact, I’ve found myself staying up until 12 a.m. waiting for a trailer to be released online just so I could watch it. I n t o d a y ’s w o r l d
Alex Coop
Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling where anything and everything is accessible on the internet, the speculation and analysis of these trailers is so much more fun. ‘Who was that person they showed for half a second?’ ‘What does that quote mean?’ When you look forward to a movie and see the trailer for it several months before it comes out, the conversations that consume comments sections and chat rooms can be mighty interesting. Luckily, I’m the type of person who wants to know key plot points before the movie comes out,
so I’m not upset when accurate predictions are made, or when a trailer shows too much – though the latter is something I think trailers should avoid because it allows for those other discussions to occur and for predictions to be made. But then there are, of course, the incredible trailers that excite us to no end, but ultimately preview a movie that in reality is actually a huge bust. (Star Wars prequels anyone?) There are instances where a trailer makes us believe a movie will be an
emotional roller coaster. What we’re provided with in the end, however, is a movie filled with dull action scenes and two scenes that have the emotional impact of a rock. I’ve been asked why I think trailers are so fascinating and told that they all look the same. I can understand that perspective. They do follow a very noticeable pattern and on top of that, are highly deceptive. I can imagine a focus group full of men and women in business attire, running through a checklist of clichés that need to be addressed in an upcoming trailer for their movie. That’s partially why I find them so interesting. A preview is a completely separate entity from a movie. Good movies are not created based on board room meetings that worship flow charts and statistics – though many movies today, unfortu-
nately, are created as a result of such garbage. Trailers on the other hand, are an advertisement. Advertisements are all about those flow charts and statistics. I appreciate a trailer that hits all the right buttons and gets me excited for its product, whether it’s good or bad. I enjoy replaying a trailer over and over again so I can analyze those few seconds a think tank decided was going to be just enough for me to get hooked. Don’t be afraid of this form of corporate marketing, there’s much more toxic versions of it out there. Like those soda commercials with beautiful skinny people enjoying life and running around. Yeah, because that’s the kind of promotion a sugary drink needs in a world where half of us eat the same junk we buy at a movie theatre, only on a daily basis.
Technology in the right hands Flying drones are drawing tons of attention these days. Popular weekly television dramas such as ‘Hawaii Five-O’ and ‘NCIS: LA’ have aired episodes in recent months with drones posing a threat as gun-toting, bomb-bearing, kill machines. News headlines have drones crashing into the White House and being used to ferry drugs from Mexico into the United States. The above brings the threat such drone technology might pose sharply into the minds of the general public. On the other side of the equation sits sectors such as agriculture, which see the drones as a tool that could aid in everything from attacking individual weeds in a field, to creating better topographical maps of farm fields. Drones are also exciting tech for farmers, offered Peter Gredig with AgNition Inc. at a meeting held in Canora, SK. in February. “They have a big potential for agriculture … everybody is excited about them,” he said, but again added they are at the ‘hype’ stage. “I still think the technology is ahead of the agronomy.” The initial thought is to use the drone for aerial mapping of fields, but Gredig expects varied uses to be developed. He said one Saskatchewan designer has created a small spray tank, and using identifying tech it can hover over a single weed and apply chemical. Like many technologies, they can be used for good things in the right hands, and for bad in another’s hands.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist With extremes in possibilities, governments are left in the no-man’s land in the middle trying to determine if they can deal with the potential threats and allow worthy development by establishing regulations. As governments are apt to do, they either ignore the situation completely, or make bad policy when they do try to establish balance. South of the 49th parallel the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States is trying its hand at creating a rule set for flying drones. Farmers have already singled two of the draft rules out for criticism. The first is a requirement pilots remain in visual contact with their drones at all times. The second is a height restriction, which limits the crafts to flying no more than 500 feet above ground. Farmers and drone operators say these constraints would limit a drone’s range and consequently its usefulness. The above rules would indeed seem to put a definite crimp in the potential use of flying drones, not just for farmers, but the
forestry sector, wildlife management, and even search and rescue. That said we also live in a time where the public has a taste for greater control if they are perceived as being a deterrent to possible terrorist activities. We only need to look to Ottawa to see that situation clearly. In January the Conservatives introduced Bill C-51, suggesting the Canadian Security Intelligence Service needs expanded powers to combat terrorist threats to Canada. The opposition New Democrats, along with various security experts, academics, and privacy advocates have been quick to warn the new powers given to CSIS can be used to investigate a lot more than just terrorism. Under the proposed law, threats to Canada’s infrastructure, economic stability, and diplomatic relations, are all fair game for Canada’s spy agency. Among the concerns are that CSIS would be given a larger mandate and expanded powers — including the ability to break the law or violate Charter rights, with judicial approval. This is an overreaction to terrorism to be sure, but one which many in the public are swallowing as they react to fear. How flying drones are mandated will fall into the same vein. Fear, rather than rational thinking, will be the overriding influence on regulations, since drones fit into the realm of terrorist tool. And farmers may be left with a tool they cannot use effectively.

In Radville, he’s known as “Doctor O,” but now, Dr. Werner Oberholzer will also be known as a member of Saskatchewan’s Health Quality Council board. “It’s certainly a great honour to be appointed to this board,” Oberholzer said. “I hope I can live up to the expectations because there’s a lot of people with a lot of know how and a lot of experience governing this board.” The South Africantrained physician has been medical director of Sun Country Health Region’s Emergency Medical Services since 2012, and served as an expert member of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health’s chronic disease management program from 2013 to 2015. He was also the 2013 Family Doctor of the Year, an award handed out by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Oberholzer said he hopes to bring something new to the table. “What I hope to bring to the board is more of a grass roots type of experience and from that perspective, find out what we can do to run it through the quality of care for patients,” he said. He added many elements play a role in what direction the board takes when it comes to improving quality of care, and they span from the personnel within the health system, its patients and its facilities. “The Health Quality Council identifies where concerns are within the health system,” he said. “It’s a

with Lean, it’s not entirely responsible for the delivery of it,” he said. “(HQC) is much more than that. It’s about building leadership for improving quality across the health system, not just one area.” In a press release, health minister Dustin Duncan said he is glad the new additions to the board offered their support to join. “We are fortunate to

Hello. My name is Bowser. I am a 2 year old male shar-pei cross. I am quite a shy guy, and need someone who has patience for me to adjust. Pretty please come down to visit me! I also LOVE other dogs! They make me come out of my shell. If you have a pet that is vaccinated I would love to have a play date! Did I also mention I am fixed and have been here for quite awhile?
Spayed and neutered pets are much happier pets. The Estevan Humane Society reserves the right to refuse any adoption.
Thank you for your continued support!

This is Nelly(laying down) and Soulaira (sitting). These two girls are VERY shy and we would like to foster them out. Please call down for more info.

Snack foods that promote better sleep According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day. But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. For example, certain snack foods may help to improve quality of sleep, especially when these foods replace less healthy snacking options. While men and women over 50 should always consult with their physicians before making any changes to their diets, the AARP notes that the following are a handful of snack foods that promote
There are plenty of snacks out there that will give you a good night’s rest. better sleep. · Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small
amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. · Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas
also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal,
it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep. · Cheese and crackers: One more traditional snack may just help you get a better night’s sleep. Cheese and crackers contain tryptophan and carbohydrates, which can induce a better night’s sleep and help you fall asleep sooner. · Cherries: Cherries contain the sleep hormone melatonin, and the AARP notes that recent studies indicated that participants who drank tart cherry juice on a daily basis fell asleep more quickly and slept longer and better than participants who did not. · Hummus: The primary ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, which are loaded with tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6. Folate has proven espe-

cially beneficial to older men and women who need help regulating their sleep patterns, while vitamin B6 helps the body regulate its clock. · Peanut butter: Peanut butter is another snacking item loaded with tryptophan. Spread some peanut butter on a carbohydrate, whether it’s a slice of toast or some crackers, before going to bed, and you may enjoy a better, longer sleep. · Walnuts: Like cherries, walnuts contain melatonin, which can contribute to a longer, more restful night’s sleep. Walnuts also can help regulate stress, which is a leading cause of sleeping difficulty. Many men and women experience difficulty sleeping as they age. But the right foods may just help combat such problems and help men and women get a more adequate night’s sleep.

New exercises to rev up workouts Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym. High-intensity workouts High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today’s most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strengthtraining movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or lowintensity activity. These workouts seem to
promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts. Kettlebells These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there.
Put some colour on your table
(NC) As nature wakes up to spring, we see vibrant colours returning to our surroundings. These colours are not only appealing to the eye, they can also signal nutritional value to inspire our food choices. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) recommends exploring a variety of colourful foods in your diet to make sure you receive the benefits from a vast spectrum of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are provided by each colour group. Phytonutrients are natural chemical compounds found in plants that give your produce its enticing colour. During spring, there are many colourful, in-season vegetables and fruits for you to enjoy. The rich red and bright yellow colours in beets are due to the presence of a unique type of phytonutrient called betalains. Betalains are powerful antioxidants, which aid our body’s natural detoxification process. This free radical scavenger has also been found to reduce inflammation, which we know is a precursor to several chronic diseases. Rich hues are also seen in plants containing anthocyanins, some examples being red cabbage, rhubarb and red onions. Various studies have shown anthocyanins to be beneficial for protection again cardiovascular disease, reducing alcoholinduced damage to the liver, decreasing carcinogenic activities in the body and enhancing cognitive function. Try including red cabbage in the form of sauerkraut to your diet this spring. Not only will you be reaping the benefits of phytonutrients, but you will also be boosting your gut health with this
fermented food option. Don’t let the rainy weather get you down; add some sunshine to your diet in the form of carotenoids. This category of phytonutrients is known to supply sunny orange and yellow tones to your diet, seen in carrots and squash. But they can also be found, in season, in tomatoes, turnip greens, spinach, and rhubarb. Humans are actually incapable of synthesizing carotenoids, so it is important that we obtain them through our diet. Carotenoids have been highlighted as having a number of important health benefits; particularly in decreasing
the risk of certain cancers and potential loss of vision. Choosing a colourful “in season” diet can actually save you money, ensures freshness (especially when buying from local vendors), and still provides you with variety all year long. Whenever possible, CHFA also recommends choosing organic produce for reduced exposure to pesticides and other unwanted toxins. Add colour to your diet this spring with the help of your local natural health food retailer. You will see the “find a retailer” tool online at chfa.ca.
Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned. Trampoline cardio For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Trampoline classes are turning up in some upscale gyms, where each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights to promote a fun and effective cardio experience. Water aerobics Swimming isn’t the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for
those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chest-deep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance. Some gyms now offer aqua cycling classes that combine water aerobics with spinning. Dance and hip-hop classes ZUMBA® classes have been popular for quite some time. But many health clubs offer additional classes that employ dance to burn calories and tone muscles. Some gyms have developed their own cardiobased dance classes that get people moving to music in a fun way. Routines are fun and fast-moving, which may make them feel less like a workout and more like a social event. Recess classes Adults who want to feel like kids again need only to enroll in a fitness class that borrows activities from the playgrounds of our youth. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club.

Reporting bullying becomes easier By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca
The digital world has become a prominent space for bullying, therefore it comes as no surprise that a cellphone is now tool used to report it. On Feb. 26, Education Minister Don Morgan joined Saskatoon Crime Stoppers President Mark Dolan, as well as students and teachers at Brunskill Elementary School to reveal the government’s next step in their Plan to Address Bullying and Cyberbullying. The Government of Saskatchewan is committing $107,500 over two years to Crime Stoppers Saskatchewan to allow students to anonymously text or phone in reports of bullying behaviour. Juli Dzuba, co-ordinator for Envision’s Cyberviolence project, said she’s not surprised that reporting methods have shifted towards the usage of cellphones. “I think that’s what kids are used to and comfortable with when it comes to addressing things,” she said. Reports made by students through text or by phone to Crime Stoppers will be redirected to the appropriate group, school division, ministry or law enforcement, according to a press release. The redirection is based on the nature, severity and location of the incident, as well as the needs of the caller. Dzuba noted that being able to report bullying quickly and anonymously is important, but prevention should still be high priority for everyone. “Understanding why youth and other people are acting a certain way in the first place and knowing what’s going on with them personally would really help,” she said. The aftermath of a reported incident, Dzuba added, is another area that could require some attention from all parties.
“If there’s some kind of follow-up after in person it would help build certain skills, but if they just report it and go ‘that’s the end of that,’ it wouldn’t really build that strength as a person.” In an interview with the Trader in November 2014, former school resource officer Const. Braden Lons-
berry said 70 per cent of the reports he received regarding bullying were related to cyber-violence. “When I was a kid, you see a bully from nine to three-thirty, then when you went home you didn’t have to worry about it. Now, some kids can’t really escape it, it’s 24/7 for them,” he said.
BUILDING FOR RENT

Farmer Appreciation Issue
Expect a spectacle this year Farm Family of the Year’s 50th anniversary to be a special one The Farm Family of the Year dinner and awards event is bigger than ever this year in recognition of its 50th anniversary. Alf Tide, now entering his 10th year as the co-ordinator of the annual show and shine of the agriculture and ranching community, said the 50th anniversary dinner will be held at Affinity Place on March 12 this year, allowing it to temporarily expand to accommodate 500 or more people. The dinner will feature the musical stylings of Brad Johner and the Johner Boys and a motivational address by Chris Koch, an Albertabased farmer who works the fields even though he has no arms or legs. Koch was featured in a Mercury article last year while he was temporarily employed on a nearby southeast Saskatchewan farm. Koch, who has appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show and has been featured in other articles and broadcasts, brings the message that “If I can …” to his audiences.

climbing steps at the granary on the farm he has been working at west of Outram. For more on Koch, people may visit his YouTube channel or check out his donation page for the United Way Toronto Tower Climb, or read the Mercury article from Oct. 16. 2013. Brad Johner, a native of the Estevan-Macoun-Midale area, is an award-winning country and western performer with five CDs and several Canadian Country Music awards behind his stylings. He was part of the Johner Brothers duo at the start of his career, being joined by brother Ken for several years before he launched his solo career. Now he’ll be on stage with his four sons who not only serve as a backup band, but also can form a musical group of their own, which they have done several times when they haven’t been working with their father. “I don’t want to make the boys’ record sound like my record,” Brad said. “I take it for what it is and try to really accent the real good parts to it. My idea is to incorporate the sound of their CD into who they are and what they sound like when they do a live performance.” The three oldest sons have been playing with Johner for the last three years, and they are going to be continuing to perform with Dad. Tide said the highlight of the night continues to be the presentation of the Farm Family of the Year Award, a regular feature of the dinner since 1985. The Estevan Chamber of Commerce and Estevan Exhibition Association are sponsoring the event. All three regional 4-H clubs will send one public speaker to the podium to address the audience as well. “Farming expertise, community leadership and volunteerism are traits the judges usually look for,” said Tide, in commenting on the past nominations and winners. Last year’s Farm Family of the Year was the Ashworth Farm and Ranch, Kelly and Janice Ashworth, of Oungre.

Teaching the importance of the prairies In an attempt to reconnect youth with the agricultural landscape, the government of Saskatchewan proclaimed March 1 to 7, 2015, as Agriculture Literacy Week in Saskatchewan. “Agriculture Literacy Week is an opportunity for us to teach our youth about agriculture and food production,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said in a press release. “Many of today’s students grow up disconnected from farms and agriculture. This week provides them with an opportunity to learn about our industry in a fun, interactive way.” “The Ministry of Education is proud to be supporting Agriculture Literacy Week, as it’s another innovative way to engage our students in their learning,” Education Minister Don Morgan noted. “This is an excellent way to encourage the literacy skills of our students while also promoting one of Sas-
katchewan’s most important industries.” During Agriculture Literacy Week, producers and other members of the agriculture industry gather in classrooms across the province to read agriculture stories and discuss their experiences in the industry. Their visits are supplemented by materials provided by Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC), such as books and videos. “Agriculture plays a vital role in our lives, and it’s important that our youth understand that,” AITC Executive Director Sara Shymko said. “Students often learn best when they are able to connect with their subject matter. By introducing them to people directly involved in the agriculture industry, we’re able to help them understand the role agriculture plays in their lives and in the world.” This year’s industry

Farmers Appreciation night. After a few years playing some 200 or more shows with Dad, Lucas, 20, Jesse, 19 and Quinn, 16, are in the process of recording their first album. Brad is producing, but he said it’s the boys’ style and Lucas’s writing that listeners will hear. He’s keeping his own country-based inflections to himself. “I’m really excited about the tunes. They’re not country,” said Johner. “They’re more of a poprock sound. They’ve written a lot of songs. They’re five songs in, and I’m producing the record for them.” The boys previously released a six-song album of covers, but this is their first foray into original work. “We’re just having fun
in the studio. We usually go in twice a week and cut stuff and go over it, arrange it and work with the band.” Johner said Lucas, who grew up a little in the world of music, is further along than he was at the same age, and the quality of songs is high. When Lucas approaches him with new music, it will already be a nearly complete piece. “He comes up and he’s got a song that’s finished with a big hook line and a chorus and a bridge, and it sounds like a complete song, so it’s really easy to go into the studio and record it,” said Johner. As part of this process, he then plays less of a guiding role, and is in more of a position to “corral” ideas and provide some focus. ⇢ p. 17 Johner
Native pest does not fall far from the tree (NC) The apple maggot, which is a fly native to North America, has been a serious pest in Canada for over 100 years. It was identified in Edmonton in 2005 and has since infected most of the city’s apple trees. Female apple maggots deposit eggs under the apple skin. Larvae feed on it, causing the fruit to rot internally. Once one apple is infected, surrounding trees become vulnerable as well. Apple growers have discovered that they are able to protect their orchards and eliminate the pest by spraying their trees with insecticides. If left unchecked, this pest would have a devastating impact on Canada’s apple industry – which produces 22 million bushels of this popular fruit every year. Growers say they are pleased to have access to crop protection products that keep the bounty free from disease, bacteria and insects. Without these tools, Canadians would certainly miss the nutrition of their ‘apple a day’

their original recording, and he’s looking forward to doing that this spring. “That first record that we did, the first few songs that were on the radio, were some of the first songs I’d written, and we always played on our own records.
We were new to the studio, so there are lots of things that we would change, but at the time the recording was different, too,” said Johner, noting today a typical recording setup may involve just one microphone and a laptop. Though the upcoming Estevan performance will be Brad and the boys, and not part of the reunion gig, Johner expects Ken will be back to perform some songs as well. “Back in the day, when I played with my two brothers and my dad, we played some of those early farmer’s day shows, so it will be kind of neat to go back to this one.” The 50th anniversary of the Farmers Appreciation Night will be held at Affinity Place on March 12, with the festivities beginning at 5 p.m.

Pesticides help to protect crops (NC) After 37 years of farming, Charles Stevens, the owner and operator of Wilmot Orchards says he has learned that in order for any business to succeed, it must adapt to modern technology – and this is especially important in modern farming he points out. Stevens says that pesticides are the main tool he uses to protect his crops from Mother Nature’s wrath. In fact, he says his crops wouldn’t grow without them. “Consumers at the grocery store want to buy the best quality products they can for the lowest prices,” says Stevens. “Crop protection products help me grow unblemished, healthy and affordable apples for Canadians to eat.” Stevens says he gets many questions about why he chooses to use certain tools and technologies on his farm. He answers that a lot of people don’t understand that pesticides are as safe as the medications we take when we are sick. “Plants are living organisms, just as human beings are,” Stevens says. “Our berries get stressed out by the environment, just as humans do. When it’s too hot outside need a product applied to them, similar to sunscreen, to protect them from exposure to the sun. If a plant gets a cut, we medicate it with a product comparable to penicillin to help it heal,” he says. Stevens further adds that pesticides are registered and assessed by the same government organization that approves the prescriptions medications we buy at the drug store. He says that ultimately crop protection products help him to produce safe and healthy fruits for Canadians to enjoy. As he prepares to shift his operations over to his children, Stevens says he takes great pride in what he’s done on his orchard and he’s confident that technology will help enable farmers to grow fresh fruit for years to come.
