Arcola principal taking on a new challenge

Arcola School principal Kevin Hengen has been named the new superintendent of schools for the east service area with the South East Cornerstone Public School Division, effective August 1. Hengen has been a part of Arcola School for over 30 years, with nearly 20 of those years coming as a teacher or an administrator. He attended classes in Arcola from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and then worked at the school as a teacher from 1995 to 2005, a viceprincipal (2005 to 2007) and a principal (2008 to present). He spent the 2007-08 school year as the principal of the Stoughton Central School. His father spent 17 years as a teacher and a principal at Arcola, and one of his daughters will graduate from the school in June. “There have been a lot of

Kevin Hengen Hengens in the building for quite a few years,” Hengen told Lifestyles. But he has been contemplating a change for the last two or three school years. “I wanted to get involved with the senior leadership team (at South East Cornerstone), and work with the division in a different capacity than a principal,” said Hengen. The east service area includes Arcola, but also stretches from Stoughton to

the Manitoba border along Highway 13, and north through Wawota, Maryfield, Moosomin, Wapella and Rocanville. Hengen will work primarily out of Carlyle. He expects his familiarity with some of the schools and their staff will initially help with his new role. As superintendent, he’ll be tasked with overseeing the 12 schools in the east area, and working with those schools on the division’s goals in reading, writing, mathematics and improving the schools’graduation rates. “I’ll be overseeing some teacher supervision, and then in the springtime, of course, hiring people as need be when the jobs are open,” said Hengen. “But it’s a lot of work on getting division goals implemented into school improvement plans, and helping support principals

and staff members in getting those plans implemented in their schools,” he added. Director of education Lynn Little said she is pleased to see Hengen join the senior administration team. “Mr. Hengen has been a tremendous leader at the school administration level,” said Little. “He, along with his staff, community, school community council and partners, have worked collaboratively to improve the learning outcomes for all students in Arcola School. “We anticipate Kevin will bring these skills to the system level in his new position and will assist in affecting learning outcomes positively for all students in SECPSD. We look forward to Kevin’s contributions and to working with him in his new capacity.” Hengen graduated from the University of Regina with a bachelor of education in 1994. He obtained a master’s of education from the University of Brandon in 2010.

Work and hobbies don’t mix It donned on me, not for the first time either, that being a sports reporter or games journalist is not something I would want to do, even though I am extremely passionate about the stories those reporters cover. A recent flurry of exciting playoff basketball and new video games have entered my line of sight, and it made me appreciate the fact that I didn’t have to worry about submitting stories, ensuring facts were correct and what others were going to think about what I wrote. I t ’s w o r t h n o t i n g that I’ve gotten a taste of both sports reporting and games journalism, and after about six months doing each, it was obvious my heart wasn’t into either of them. In college, I was looking forward to becoming a sports reporter, which is why my first choice for a beat in our campus

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling newspaper was the men’s varsity basketball team. It was a thrilling experience at first, but the repetitiveness of it – attending practices and games, taking notes, talking to similar people every day – served as a warning. I appreciate that one semester of sports reporting, but I’m a lot happier talking about sports, basketball in particular, with friends and family. I like making biased opinions, opinions I could never include in a sports story. Unless I worked my way up and became a columnist, but would be a lot of sports reporting I’d have to do first.

My stint in games journalism took place during a semester-long internship that turned into a bit of a money-making occupation in the form of freelance writing. This time, I was talking to different people frequently for stories, creating videos, reviewing games. However, it was when I was tasked with reviewing a game one weekend that I suddenly realized, games journalism wasn’t for me, either. I remember popping the game into the disc tray, and an hour later, I realized I was just having fun and that I was seriously not looking forward to analyzing the game bit

by bit in a written review. I just wanted to play and then go talk about it with co-workers at the water cooler. Furthermore, the overall toxicity in the gaming industry is another turnoff when it comes to reporting on it. Death threats are made towards writers on a daily basis, often times because the person making the threats didn’t appreciate an educated analysis of his or her favorite game, or didn’t enjoy highlighted problems within the gaming industry, like sexism, which also exists in so many aspects of society, are highlighted and discussed. I would much rather sit back comfortably and appreciate that glorious mess of an industry from a distance. After those two trail runs, the logical next step was to dive into general reporting, and to be honest, I haven’t looked back since.

Knowing whatever I’m covering today is going to be different than what I covered the day before is a breath of fresh air, and I essentially learn something meaningful and new everyday. At times, I even do something I haven’t done before, like partake in Ramadan and experience new cultures. Frustration can sink in occasionally when calls aren’t returned or stories don’t turn out the way I hoped, but then I can go home and unwind by doing things I enjoy, things I don’t have to analyze or critique. As graduation approaches for hundreds of high school students, I encourage them all to pursue their passions, but leave some of it for safekeeping. You deserve to have a career you enjoy, but you also deserve to go home and appreciate hobbies without any strings attached.

Farming history comes in handy One area of agriculture I have long held an interest in is rare breeds of livestock. There are multiple reasons for it, including maintaining a connection to our farming past when many of the breeds fit a very different on-farm world than we have today. What works on a farm today simply would not cut it in the past, and vice versa. Today’s hogs would not fare as well in typically outdoor conditions, and better than the current strains of laying hen. That said, many of the older breeds would not have the average daily gains and feed conversion numbers required today to grind a profit out of the large-scale barns. That should not be a surprise since steam engines are not going to work very efficiently on a farm today either. But we have long worked hard to preserve our vintage farm equipment. The Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum is testament to that effort; with its extensive static display of old tractors and steam engines, which are the heart of the annual Threshermen’s Show, the highlight of the year at the museum. We collectively seem to grasp there is importance in preserving our past, whether it’s the history of Saskatchewan baseball and a Hall of Fame and Museum in North Battleford, or someone painstakingly rebuilding a 1950s car to factory specs. It might be easier to collect old tractors and store them in a shed to be viewed by future

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist generations than it is to maintain Hampshire swine, but it is no less important. In fact, I suggest the maintenance of livestock genetics is more important. We make the assumption the trend we have been on for years in farming is the one that will continue. That is hard to argue since the idea of farms getting ever and ever larger, and more specialized began back post the First World War. All things holding the same, the trend will continue. But the fly in the proverbial ointment in thinking that way is the assumption all things will stay the same. That may not be the case. We are still far from free of the idea that fossil fuels are going to last. Now, diesel fuel and the power source for today’s huge farm tractors become an issue. It may be reasonable to expect an electric car to get the businessman to work each day, but pulling an 80-foot cultivator is another issue. On a broader scale we also expect our populations will remain clustered in ever

larger cities. But we increasingly see water shortages, how to deal with garbage from millions, and the general deterioration of city infrastructure with little financial ability by municipalities to address the situation. So, could big cities collapse? To think not would be a case of not considering all the possibilities. Which brings us back to rare breeds. If we see a move of people back to the land, and farms forced to smaller size by any number of possibilities, could make the old genetics a much-needed resource. We actually already see that with the trend toward backyard laying hens in many forwardthinking cities. People wanting some control of their food are looking at chickens, but the cage layers of the big farms are far from ideal for backyards. That’s why a project through the University of Alberta’s Poultry Research Centre is so intriguing. The Centre sent 5,500 chicks from five rare breeds; Barred Plymouth Rock, Light Sussex, Rhode Island Red, Brown Leghorn and Random Breed 1978 to people across Alberta where the idea of raising flocks of heritage chickens and helping preserve the rare breeds. The birds were sold to farms and acreages and for use in backyard flocks in Edmonton. It is a wonderful program that serves well to preserve genetics, which may well be important again in the future, as they have been in the past.

game loss, Dorrance said the fielding errors the team made were their downfall. “We got a little weak mentally, which caused us to have a few too many errors,” he said. Throughout the game, the A’s were making contact with the ball but couldn’t get it past the Lumsden defence. “We just didn’t get to hit the holes we wanted to hit. We hit the ball hard, but right at the opposition,” Dorrance said. So far early, in the season, the A’s are 1-2-1. Going forward, Dorrance said the team has to clean up their errors, as that is part of the game they can control. When they do make errors, Dorrance said, the other teams jump right on top of that, which leads to them falling behind in a game. What has impressed him early in the season is the hitting, and he is also surprised with how well the pitching has been. The next game for the A’s is their home-opener in Alameda on May 23. They play a doubleheader against Swift Current, with the games starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The A’s are also in action on May 24, and are scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Buffalos in Regina.

_________________________ The Board of Education of South East Cornerstone Public School Division would like to send out a heartfelt thanks to all of those who supported students and families through the recent labour action by SEIU West. The efforts to continue to provide a high quality program and safe learning environment by our school administrators and teachers as well as Central Office Staff was very much appreciated. We also would like to thank families for transporting and making arrangements to ensure their students were able to be at school, as many bus routes were affected. This was a very difficult time for all involved, including our SEIU West staff members. We welcome you all back to continue your good work in supporting our students and our schools. Thank you to everyone for your patience, understanding, and your commitment to the students of SECPSD. Carol Flynn, Board Vice-Chair
