Local Sports Bruins get first win over Weyburn It took them three games, but the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins picked up their first win of the new season on Tuesday. The Bruins edged the Weyburn Red Wings 2-1 at Affinity Place. Darcy DeRoose scored the winner in the second period when a David Robertson point shot missed the net and caromed to DeRoose at the side of the net. The Bruins scored first less than two minutes in when Josh Rieger converted on a scramble in front of the net. Just moments earlier, the team had staged a touching pre-game tribute to late defenceman Nick Egan, with a moment of silence and photos being shown on the scoreboard. Weyburn’s lone goal came in the second period when Braden Mellon set up Ian Parker for a onetimer past Bruins goalie Tyler Gutenberg, who was playing in his first SJHL game. Prior to the win over Weyburn, the Bruins lost their first two games against the Melville Millionaires. They fell 3-1 in Melville on Sept. 18, then lost 3-2 at home the next night. “I just felt we got off to a slow start tonight. I felt we sat back and watched Melville play their game instead of playing our game. We’ve gotta initiate a little more and
stop being so respectful of the other club,” Bruins head coach and general manager Chris Lewgood said following the home loss. “What I mean is we’ve gotta have some courage and our guys need to understand that they’re good enough to play with anybody and take the play to anybody. It’s going to be a growing process before they understand how good they really are. Our young guys are suited for this league and they’re going to do well here.” Lane Harbor scored the eventual winner for the Mils halfway through the second period when Bruins goalie Brett Lewchuk couldn’t find the rebound of a Brennen Miller shot. The Bruins got within a goal four minutes later. Brad Arabia’s first SJHL goal was one to remember, as he sniped a shot off the far post and in. However, that was the end of the scoring. “It’s nice. I’m glad I got it in the second game. It brings confidence to me, so now I just look forward. I don’t have to worry about living up to (the expectations) of getting high offence. It’s a lot of stress, basically,” Arabia said. Melville had gotten out to a 2-0 lead, beginning with the first goal in Affinity Place this season, a rebound tapped in by Landon Farrell four minutes in.
Team loses first two games to Melville
game. We played a good two periods. but the first killed us. They’re a big team, they play hard, they play aggressive. The goalie played well too. We tried to get a lot of shots on him. They just came out the better team today. We gotta make sure we play our full game and not take a period off.” On Thursday, meanwhile, Melville scored three goals in the second period en route to victory. Mils defenceman Kirk Bear and Bruins captain Nolan Nicholas exchanged goals 1:35 apart early in the second. But the Mils added goals from Farrell and Miller later in the period to take the lead for good. The shots were 33-30 for Estevan.
Keaton Longpré tries to split the defence against Weyburn on Wednesday night. The Bruins walked away with a 2-1 victory. Their second goal was scored by defenceman Matthew Carr early in the second, as his shot hit Lewchuk and fluttered over him into the goal. The Bruins made it 2-1 when Ryan Duret tipped a point shot by Josh Rieger that bamboozled Mils starter Jon Manlow. Although the Bruins outshot the Mils 31-29, Lewgood said they didn’t get enough offensive pressure early on. “I thought we started slowly and I think as the game went on, as we maybe tasted a little blood in the second period, we started generating more as the game went on, but too little, too late. When you’re taking chances to make plays, there’s often turnovers in the neutral zone
and things like that that go against you. We didn’t create enough, obviously.” Lewgood said he saw something encouraging from the so-called fourth line. “I was really impressed with the resiliency tonight of the (Chase) McKersie, Arabia and Ryan Duret line. They had a couple struggles and some bad breaks early. Their leash was getting shorter and shorter as the game got on. Then they turned it around real quick with two goals in a matter of two shifts, and then they maintained pressure throughout the game.” Arabia said the SJHL is a different experience than playing in the Superior International Junior Hockey League back home. “We got to see them (Thursday) and I knew
what the speed was like. It’s definitely different from the junior back in Thunder Bay. It’s a different game. You gotta make sure you have your head on a swivel and you skate with them every night. “We didn’t play a full

Using nerd power for the good
I recently had an overwhelmingly positive experience during the Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo. With a record breaking 8,800 people in attendance, hundreds of booths and dozens upon dozens of incredibly talented artists on hand, it made for an unforgettable experience. Oh, and of course, let’s not forget the celebrity guests. I’m not talking about the one’s in the movies or television shows though there were plenty of those celebrities as well, one of which was John Barrowman who I discovered likes Flash after I found myself sorting through comics a few feet away from him - but the celebrities who walked the halls dressed up as Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, the ewoks from Star Wars and even Darth Vader himself. Cosplayers I find are often the heart and soul of these conventions. The amount of work they put into their outfits is incredible and they make not only the children’s day but also the inner-child of every grown man or woman who attends. There’s still a misconception surrounding these cosplayers despite their growing popularity. These not basement dwellers who spend all their lives working on costumes and watching TV, with jobs an issue of no-concern because they don’t have one. They’re cosplayers are quite often people with full-time employment who have a serious passion for pop culture and the comic book world and want to showcase it by dressing up. A panel at the start of Saskatoon expo addressed the importance of cosplay within the community and the positives a group of dressed up heroes could accomplish. Charity events can greatly benefit from cosplayers’
Alex Coop
Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling
mere presence as they broaden the outreach to the community through their own social media connections and sheer power of delivering smiles to those around them. Living in Toronto, cosplayers were everywhere on a daily basis. Many situated themselves in the downtown core. A smaller pocket of them however, like the X-Men of Toronto who I had the pleasure of interviewing, were at the opening night of X-Men: Days of Future Past downtown and also went as far as Scarborough to make people’s day. One particular event, which I covered in its entirety, was a heartwarming toy drive near Scarborough that drew hundreds of people. The X-Men of Toronto, who by the way are a charity-based cosplay group and consist of doctors, lawyers and mechanics, were there as well. In short, they helped a toy drive that had been operating for several years and took it to the next level in terms of size and overall footprint in the community. In Estevan, we don’t have The Avengers roaming the streets. We do however, have people donning jeans and t-shirts or some form of emergency service uniforms doing incredible work within the community and helping those in need on a daily basis. But if you do want to try and accomplish what the X-Men of Toronto do, either on your own or with a group, don’t be afraid to do so. You would only add to the positive work you’re
attaching yourself to and that is something anyone can get on board with. On a quick note - though I could make it a long note but I’m running out of words comic books and graphic novels themselves are powerful pieces of reading material that, believe it or not, can influence readers and deliver narratives based on the society we live in. The misconception that they are a waste of one’s time and are filled with simply pictures of violence and poor writing is false. Like novels, there are good ones and bad ones, but there is so much more variety than ever before and a majority of them reflect issues within our world. I’m going to use the relatively new Ms. Marvel series as an example. The series follows Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American from Jersey City, New Jersey, who is the fourth woman to obtain the Ms. Marvel identity and the first Muslim character to headline her own comic book. She attends high school, face everyday problems in class and in the hallways, but thoroughly enjoys her heroic adventures and therefore faces pressure from her parents who want her to veer away from a life that could endanger her. It’s a fantastic step forward for Marvel Comics, an industry that has been spearheading several cultural shifts to some of their most iconic characters recently, and as a result they’ve delivered yet another character young women in today’s world can not only look up to but relate to. And there’s a lot more where that came from. So embrace your inner nerd and understand it is about fun, but that fun can be used to positively influence a number of facets in people’s lives.
The difficulties of rerouting water The issue of water and farming is one that just won’t go away. The reason it persists is simple enough to understand; there is just not an easy solution to the core questions at play. From a single farmer perspective there is generally a rather rational belief that if they own a piece of land they should be able to tend to that land in whatever way they see fit in pursuit of making an honest living. With that as a central belief, the idea of draining a slough to capture more acres for planting, or digging a trench to channel runoff away from their land would seem to be well within the realm of managing one’s land resource. However, when water is drained and rerouted it ends up going somewhere else, and too often than means a farmer ‘downstream’ gets hit by more water, and ends up with flooded acres. If that farmer in turn trenches water away, the problem compounds downstream. It is a recipe for hard feelings and lawsuits as farmers end up enemies based on
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist where water flows. The first farmer in the line is not happy to see legislation to limit his ability to drain and trench because it leaves acres under water he feels he could turn productive by diverting water. And while the farmers downstream might be protected by trenching bans, they do not line up to pay the first farmer some level of compensation for being prevented from bringing additional acres into production. Ultimately, the water grows in volumes and ends up impacting communities downstream. Nowhere is that better illustrated than the Assiniboine River system where Portage
la Prairie and Winnipeg often feel the brunt of water flowing from much of eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. The situation has led to millions, upon millions of dollars spent over the decades to mitigate the problem. In some cases the efforts, such as Lake of the Prairies, have worked as they were supposed to, with limited negative impact. In other cases, efforts by government agencies have simply diverted water to flood farmed land in an effort to save urban housing, housing, which in reality are allowed to exist far too close to a known flood plain in the first place. But those homes on the flood plain house voters, more voters than on the remaining scattered farms of rural Manitoba, so one knows who government will look to protect first. So the affair of water and farming rages with the issues so twisted with related ideas ranging from the right to farm, to the politics of re-election, answers seem all but impossible to realize.

Super heroes assemble in Saskatoon By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca
The nerd core was in full force on the weekend of Sept. 20 as thousands flocked the Prairieland Park in Saskatoon for the first official Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo. Representing the unmistakable reflection of the growing comic book culture in Saskatchewan, the expo’s record-breaking attendance and droves of people dressed as super heroes and villains was all sorts of fun. This trend however, is even evident here in Estevan. “It’s great that it’s become so popular. These expos are everywhere now,” said Kate-Lee Nolin, branch manager of the Estevan Public Library. “I was at a library conference in March in Indianapolis and half of the convention centre was about 10,000 people attending the conference, the other 10,000 attending comic-con, the first one in Indianapolis. It was amazing to see so much excitement.” Aside from the recordshattering attendance at the expo, the rising popularity in all things comic-book related in Saskatchewan is reflected by the simple expansion of several aisles that house comic books and graphic novels in the library. “They’re becoming very popular. We did start with a really small collection and
The first official Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo was held at Prairieland Park on the weekend of Sept. 20. now we have actually moved it near the lounging area so it’s more visible for people and because there’s more room there. A lot of people coming in, that’s where they want to go to,” noted Nolin. She also touched on a popular misconception that revolves around the belief that graphic novels are just for children, an idea that quickly loses momentum when one looks at the extensive quantity of graphic novels in the adult section of the library. In addition, adults were largely occupying all the space at the expo in Saskatoon, not young children, who did however make up a sizeable percentage of those in attendance. The adults held nothing back either. They dressed up
as costumed vigilantes, waited hours to meet celebrity guests like John Barrowman and, of course, bought comic books, some even priced in the thousands. “The turnout is larger than I expected,” said Jesse Windels of Vintage Collectibles, a comic book and hobby store located in Saskatoon. “The amount of people here is quite amazing. We also have a lot more vendors,
a bunch of people from out of town as well. “The independant stuff is really popular right now because it’s rare and harder to get in the first place but there’s a good wash of variety for everyone,” said Windels. In addition to the growing comic book collection at the Estevan library, a new Manga (comics created in Japan) club will be starting on Oct. 25.

National News U.S. asking Canada for additional help in Middle East, Harper reveals UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. - Canada will soon be weighing the possibility of an extended military role in the Middle East, Prime Minister Stephen Harper indicated Wednesday. Harper said he has just recently received a request from the U.S. government for further Canadian involvement in the fight against Islamist rebels. “We have to have some additional debate within our government,” he said Wednesday during a question-and-answer session in New York before an audience of U.S. business leaders. “The government of
Canada will make a decision on that very shortly.” When pressed about the possible new engagement, Harper declined to offer details because the U.S. government “didn’t make the letter public.” One government official familiar with the request said it does not involve combat. Harper did say the world can’t allow terrorists to gain safe havens like the one that has developed in eastern Syria and western Iraq. A second government official, who like the first was not authorized to speak publicly about the mat-
ter, said the U.S. request has been part of a natural progression of events and came as no surprise to the government. “We’ve been working closely with the Americans, who have been trying to build a coalition for quite some time,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We’ve been involved in those discussions.” The official said the Canadian government has always made it clear it “that it would be prepared to do more as requests came in.” Harper will need to discuss the matter further with his cabinet, and also
with opposition party leaders before any decisions are made, the official added. Wednesday’s conversation with the Wall Street Journal’s editor-in-chief also delved into some of the sociological aspects of the fight against the al-Qaida splinter group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Some of the terrorists who carry Western passports can hardly be called Muslims; some of them apparently don’t even attend mosque, Harper said. He also suggested that Middle Eastern hostility to
the West is nothing new. Harper said there’s been a constituency for that since the Crusades. At that point the editor-in-chief, Gerard Baker, interjected: “Of course they had a point, during the Crusades.” That was just one snippet of a free-flowing conversation in New York’s financial district, where the high-profile newspaperman pressed Harper on a number of fronts. Baker mentioned Canada’s relatively strong economic performance, but he pushed Harper on the relative weakness of
some Canadian energy sectors beyond energy, and whether Canada’s recent economic performance hadn’t softened a bit. At the end of the conversation, he was asked for advice he might offer U.S. conservatives. Harper talked about immigrants — and how his party had turned “small-c conservatives into big-C conservatives.” “We began our appeal by showing up,” he said. “That’s been the big transformation of politics in out country... It’s why we have come to office, and stayed in office.”

Obama at UN: With coalition, US will dismantle Islamic State ‘network of death’ with force
Declaring the world at a crossroads between war and peace, President Barack Obama vowed at the U.N. on Wednesday to lead a coalition to dismantle an Islamic State “network of death” that has wreaked havoc in the Middle East and drawn the U.S. back into military action in the region. Speaking to the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly, Obama said the U.S. would be a “respectful and constructive partner” in confronting the Islamic State militants through force. But he also implored Muslims in the Middle East to reject the ideology that has spawned groups like the Islamic State and to cut off funding that has allowed that terror group and others to thrive. “Ultimately, the task of rejecting sectarianism and extremism is a generational task — a task for the people of the Middle East themselves,” Obama said. “No external power can bring about a transformation of hearts and minds.” The president’s remarks came against the backdrop of an expanded U.S. military campaign against the Islamic State group, with airstrikes now hitting targets in both Iraq
and Syria. A coalition of five Arab nations joined the U.S. this week in the strikes in Syria: Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The U.S. also opened another military front with airstrikes this week against a new al-Qaida cell that the Pentagon said was “nearing the execution phase” of a direct attack on the U.S. or Europe. The threats have drawn Obama back into conflicts in the Middle East that he has long sought to avoid, particularly in Syria, which is mired in a bloody threeyear civil war. Just months ago, the president appeared to be on track to fulfil his pledge to end the U.S.-led wars he inherited in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama sought to distinguish this current military campaign from those lengthy wars, declaring that he has no intention of sending U.S. troops to occupy foreign lands. “We will neither tolerate terrorist safe havens nor act as an occupying power,” he said. The militant threat in the Middle East is just one in a series of global crises that have tested Obama this year. Russia has repeatedly flouted warning from the U.S. and Europe to stop

And leaders in West Africa have criticized Obama for not doing more to help combat an Ebola outbreak that is believed to have infected more than 5,800 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal. Obama took on Russia directly in his remarks, accusing Moscow of sending arms to pro-Kremlin separatists, refusing to allow access to the site of a downed civilian airliner and then moving its own troops across the border with Ukraine. “This is a vision of the world in which might makes right, a world in which one nation’s borders can be redrawn by another, and civilized people are not allowed to recover the remains of their loved ones because of the truth that might be revealed,” Obama said. “America stands for something different.” Still, Obama held open the prospect of a resolution to the monthslong conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While he has previously expressed skepticism about a fragile cease-fire signed earlier this month, he said Wednesday that the agreement “offers an opening” for peace. If Russia follows through on the agreement, Obama said the U.S. will lift economic sanctions that have damaged Russia’s economy but so far done little to shift President Vladimir Putin’s approach. As Obama spoke, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sat in the audience at the U.N., staring down at a stack of
papers without glancing up at Obama. The chaotic global landscape Obama described Wednesday stood in contrast to his remarks at the U.N. one year ago, when he spoke of diplomatic openings on multiple fronts. At the time, the U.S. was embarking on another attempt to forge an elusive peace between Israelis and Palestinians and there were signs of a thaw in the decades-old tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The Mideast peace talks have since collapsed, though the president said Wednesday that “as bleak as the landscape appears, America will never give up the pursuit of peace.” And while the U.S., Iran and world powers are now in the midst of nuclear negotiations, the talks are deadlocked and there is skepticism about whether a deal can be reached by a Nov. 24 deadline. “My message to Iran’s leaders and people is simple: Do not let this opportunity pass,” Obama said. “We can reach a solution that meets your energy needs while assuring the world that your program is peaceful.” L a t e r We d n e s d a y, Obama was to hold his first one-on-one meeting with new Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who took office this month. The U.S. has blamed the former Iraqi leadership’s lack of inclusiveness for giving the Islamic State a recruiting tool and had made the formation of a new government a condition for deeper military action to stop the militant group.

Grand jury finished hearing Booth 21 & 22 evidence against NASCAR star Showcase at Affinity Place Tony Stewart in fatal crash % % Off
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Prosecutors in upstate New York said a grand jury was finished hearing testimony regarding Tony Stewart’s role in the on-track death of sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr. and its decision would be announced Wednesday. Ward was killed Aug. 9 when a car driven by the three-time NASCAR champion struck and killed him during a dirt track race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. The 20-year-old Ward, who had climbed from his car to confront Stewart, died of blunt force trauma. Ontario County District Attorney Michael Tantillo looked at the evidence and could have brought charges or dropped the case himself, but said last week he was taking the matter to a grand jury that was convened this week. Experts said Stewart could be charged with second-degree manslaughter under New York law if prosecutors believe he “recklessly caused the death of another person,” with negligent homicide another possibility. Authorities said the first car to pass Ward had to swerve to miss hitting him. The front of Stewart’s car appeared to clear Ward, but Ward was struck by the right rear tire and hurtled through the air. His father later told a newspaper there
was “no reason” for the death given Stewart’s skills and experience. Sheriff Philip Povero asked spectators to turn over photos and videos of the crash as investigators worked to reconstruct the accident. Among the things being looked at were the dim lighting, how muddy it was and whether Ward’s dark firesuit played a role in his death, given the conditions. In submitting his findings to the district attorney, Povero said they included a “forensic video enhancement” from state police. Stewart issued a brief statement expressing deep sadness for Ward’s death and then skipped three races before returning late in the Sprint Cup’s regular season. After Ward’s death, NASCAR announced a rule that prohibits drivers from climbing out of a crashed or disabled vehicle — unless it is on fire — until safety personnel arrive. The series also cleared the way for Stewart to make its Chase for the Sprint Cup championship with a win, despite missing the three races, but he didn’t make the 16-driver field. There have been very few criminal prosecutions stemming from incidents that occur during competition. There have been two cases in the last 14 years in which NHL players were charged for their actions on

the ice. Marty McSorley was convicted of assault with a weapon for hitting Donald Brashear with a stick during a 2000 game, and Todd Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm for punching Colorado’s Steve Moore in 2004. But it’s extremely rare for incidents during auto races to bring police scrutiny and Povero emphasized that his was an “on-track crash investigation.” Research by The Associated Press dating to 2003 turned up no cases in which a driver was charged for his role in an on-track incident. Team owner James Sink was found guilty of misdemeanour assault of driver Maynard Peters after a bloody 2005 post-race fight in North Carolina. In 2003, NASCAR driver Jimmy Spencer was under investigation for assault after punching Kurt Busch in the face following a race at Michigan, but Busch asked for his complaint to be dropped. Legal experts believe the case against Stewart would be difficult to prove — even to a grand jury, which needs only 12 of the 23 members to agree that charges are warranted. “I think the DA has succumbed to public attention and public pressure on this one, there was just too much notoriety, and that’s why he took it to a grand jury,” said David Weinstein, a former state and federal prosecutor in Miami who is now in private practice. He said it would be difficult to prove criminal intent in Ward’s death.

Tips to protect your home and belongings (NC) As the weather begins to change, harsh conditions once again become a real possibility. Are you doing all you can to protect your home? Here are some often-overlooked dangers that homeowners can and should prepare for: Every major new purchase changes your protection picture A recent Western Financial Group study found that millions of Canadian have no idea what the contents of their home are worth and that very few have a strong grasp on what coverage they have or what special limitations there may be on their policy in short, they are vulnerable. “Most people have neither taken the time, nor accessed the tools to determine what their contents are worth,” says Denise Lang, Western Financial Group's regional vice president of sales in Manitoba. “Yes, they probably have some type of contents insurance, although they lack an accurate picture and this means they may not be properly protected.” It is essential to work with a trusted broker to make sure you have appropriate coverage. Moreover, if you make any significant purchases (like a wedding ring or piece of art) you should update your policy immediately.Long-term vacancy can lead to longterm repercussions Each year when the cold weather arrives, many of us go south leaving our homes unoccupied for weeks, even months. This, too, can affect your insurance protection. A property left vacant for as little as four days may no longer
qualify for all coverage under the policy. To avoid risk, you should arrange for someone responsible to look in on your home and contents and, as always, you should advise your insurance broker of your absence and discuss any changes to your policy that may be required. Beware of atypical weather damage When we walk out our front doors, many of us immediately do a mental checklist of things we might have forgotten: “Did I turn off the stove?” “Is the back door locked?” “Did I close the windows?” While this type of worrying seems comical, it matters. Aside from the obvious (like a fire or break-in), a seemingly minor oversight like leaving windows open can lead to water damage to the interior of your home in a rainstorm, which is not typically covered by policies. “With the heavy rains we've seen in the last few years, small incidences of negligence have become more and more common. Closing a window can really mean the difference of thousands of dollars,” Lang explains. “Additionally, most policies don't cover seepage, so you should talk to your broker if this is a risk.” You can never prepare for every eventuality, but you can do your best to safeguard your home against an array of often-overlooked dangers. Home décor rules to live by
(NC) Are you looking to refresh a room, or give life to tired space? Take a look at a few creative quick tips from Vern Yip, the acclaimed interior designer, long-time HGTV star, and an ambassador for the Portuguese Cork Association. Especially for DIYers, here are Yip’s top design rules: Tie in the Old with the New Pull a room together that shows off the things you love most. Mix modern, functional furniture with relics from travels, or beautiful antique pieces from generations past. A gallery wall is one of the easiest ways to combine old and new. Get creative with an eclectic mix of modern
prints, travel photos, and family mementos. Make Your Flooring Functional A beautiful floor is one of the simplest ways to punctuate a room. Opt for materials that are both chic and comfortable, such as cork flooring. Cork floors are warm, soft on the feet and eco-friendly. Whether a kids’ playroom, where we spend a lot of time on the floor; a kitchen, where we stand for a long time; a basement and bedroom, where we may be stepping on it barefoot, cork’s natural ability to insulate against heat, cold, noise and vibration make it an ideal choice for any room in the home. What’s more, with
design styles that range from wood-like planks to marbleesque tiles, plus an easy-to-install system, cork flooring meets a wide range of aesthetics and is a DIYer’s dream. Don’t Shy Away from Colour If you’re stuck in a sea of neutrals, it’s time to take a risk with colour. Start small by replacing old pillow covers, throws and lampshades to reflect the hues and tones of the season. Or, create an accent wall with a printed wallpaper or painted design. Keep your larger items white or neutral so that you can easily mix and match seasonal colours with permanent pieces.

Clever ways to finish your basement (NC) An unfinished basement is a source of energy loss in most homes. If you do finish that space with wall and floor coverings, plus insulation, you will notice better sound proofing – and a big difference on your energy bills. Renovating your basement not only provides a soundproof space for the ultimate ‘man cave’, but it could give the entire family more living space. If you decide to go the man cave route, soundproofing
is essential when constructing your new domain. A simple solution is the insulation choice you make. By selecting a mineral wool product such as Roxul Safe N’ Sound, you will get sound-absorbing qualities that let you crank up your subwoofer, or cheer and jump around when your favourite team scores. If you just want to create a new living area or more storage space, install a rigid board insulation against the

Extremists linked to Islamic State behead French hostage PARIS - Algerian extremists allied with the Islamic State group have decapitated a French hostage after France ignored their demand to stop airstrikes in Iraq, according to a video released by a U.S. terrorism watchdog. A group calling itself Jund al-Khilafah said after abducting Herve Gourdel on Sunday that he would be killed within 24 hours unless France ended its airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq. The French government has insisted it will not back down. It would not immediately comment on the beheading video. Terrorism watchdog SITE Intelligence Group distributed a video by Jund al-Khilafah Wednesday announcing Gourdel’s death. Gourdel was a 55-year-old mountaineering guide from Nice seized in mountains of northern Algeria. The video resembled those showing the beheadings of two American journalists and a British aid worker in recent weeks, but instead of showing President Barack Obama, it showed French President Francois Hollande. France started airstrikes in Iraq on Friday, the first country to join the U.S. military campaign against the Islamic State fighters there. “Our values are at stake,” French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Wednesday after hearing about the video. He would not comment further, but minutes earlier
he insisted that France would continue fighting in Iraq as long as necessary.
