Cheers to the man who was walking his dog in front of Pleasantdale School and noticed there were just a few people shovelling and raking eight yards of sand around our new play structure. He stopped, introduced himself, picked up a shovel and continued to help us until the job was done. We found out he doesn’t even have children attending our school. Thank you so much for all your help. You are a great person and thank your little boy for the sand peanut butter cookies! Cheers to all of the blue bins on the curb Sept. 9. It’s so nice to see so many people taking part in the recycling program. Cheers to the speed limit change on Highway 39 going west in the valley in Estevan. I hope it’s permanent.

Jeers to all of the people whining and sniveling about the recycling program. Grow up. It’s a good thing. Jeers to the jeers about front yard garbage cans. Get over it! It’s annoying hearing about it every week! Jeers to the lady who just dumped all the garbage out of her vehicle onto the parking lot at No Frills. You’re being a real great role model for your daughter sitting in the vehicle watching. Jeers to the public, corporate and local businesses for not putting in a float to support the rodeo parade. Jeers to the disgusting people who throw not only their garbage, but dirty baby diapers, onto the parking lot at Walmart. Shame on you! Jeers to Brad Wall for jinxing the Banjo Bowl with his cheesy video. Jeers to people who can’t be bothered with double-checking if the number they are dialing should be a four or a seven. To you dialing the wrong number, sometimes once in error is no big deal, but to the residents receiving a few wrong calls a day, it gets a little annoying. Is it really that hard to check before you dial?

We may be just 10 years away from sending people to Mars as part of a research project and reality TV series. Mars One is a $4-billion project to establish a settlement on Mars in 2023. It’s a strange mission, to say the least. As a way to recoup the cost of the mission, the television rights have been sold, and the same people who brought you Big Brother are planning to produce a reality TV series about the mission once the first shuttle launches. More than 78,000 people registered for the selection program in April when the initial call for potential astronauts was made. Forty people will then be selected and trained for eight years before embarking on what is presumed to be a one-way trip. The planned mission is to create a permanent settlement. The astronauts are signing up to go to Mars and will never be coming back. You too can apply to spend the rest of your life on Mars. I don’t think the people signing up for this experiment are crazy, and just because I don’t understand the allure of Mars, doesn’t mean nobody else ever could. But I really don’t understand the dream of living on Mars and leaving everyone and everything behind back on Earth. It takes a very special person to do that. It’s a seven or eight month trip to the Red Planet, and the Mars One website
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers makes it very clear this will not be an easy trip for the astronauts, living in extremely close quarters with people they may decide they just really don’t get along with after that first month. On the positive side, for the rest of us, we will be privy to the entire journey. We get to see all the constant bickering and possible hostile behaviour among the crewmates during their months-long trip. Part of the astronauts’ training will include a few months every two years away from the rest of the world in a simulation facility with four fellow aspiring astronauts. It’s possible that will prepare them for tediousness and boring conversation. They say the thing about space is that no one can hear you scream, but the real truth is that when conversation goes dull you can’t even talk about the weather. There is no weather, except maybe solar storms, but those may not count as actual weather. Chatting casually about the weather is a favourite pastime for many Canadians, so many of us could really have difficulty
keeping up our small talk on the long journey. The settlement is only going to include four people for the first two years, with four more astronauts joining the settlement in two-year intervals. What I really wonder is whether these people will be remembered and known the same way we know Columbus, Magellan or Leif Ericson who landed in North America 1,000 years ago. After all, with little of the Earth left to actually explore, the next explorers in our world must be interplanetary. Are the names of the people who just signed up for this project going to be synonymous with exploration? Will they be remembered like Neil Armstrong? They may not be, with the mystery expelled from the mission by having cameras monitoring every moment. If we see a bunch of reality stars, a la Snooky, coasting to Mars for a big construction, settlement and research mission, we aren’t going to think much of the crew. The mission may even become a laughing stock. That’s maybe the biggest hurdle this team is going to have to overcome: being taken seriously. They have 10 years to do it. They have 10 years to make sure everything will be perfect. Or maybe in that time, the whole project will fall flat on its face and never get off the launch pad.
The fight against weeds can take many shapes While farmers work hard each year to maximize yields, yields ultimately impacted by nature more than most things producers do, one thing remains constant, weeds grow under just about every condition conceivable. Wild oats have been the scourge of farmers for decades. They have been attacked with plows, discs, rod weeders, cultivators and herbicide after herbicide, and still they pop up every year. And wild oats are just one of the weeds farmers deal with. Wild mustard, kochia and a dozen others depending on the area, infest crops with the potential to zap yields by consuming needed nutrients and moisture, forcing producers to invest in crop protection products to kill weeds. The best cultivation techniques and the most heralded of herbicides are still not 100 per cent effective, so weeds grow and produce a multitude of seeds that stay in the soil to pop up in future years. It’s interesting that harvesting is actually a rather effective weed seed distribution system. Weed seeds are small and pass through the combine, being spread with the blowing chaff coming out of the combine. A number of years ago the idea of a chaff
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist catcher came to the Prairies. It was a simple enough device, catching the chaff, which was then deposited in piles across the field. From there farmers had options. One was to allow cattle to graze the piles. It was a way to transfer some additional crop nutrients to livestock, in this case producing beef, although it was not the best solution in terms of weeds. Many weed seeds survive quite nicely going through the gut of a cow, and when it passes through the animal it actually ends up on the ground in a nutrient rich spot thanks to the rest of the manure. The weed seed’s potential to grow is actually enhanced. The other solution was to burn the chaff piles, fire at least having a higher rate of success in terms of killing weed seeds. In Australia, a sort of chaff catching machine is again turning up behind some combines. A recent Western Producer story detailed the machine, which is finding acceptance in western Australia where producers are looking for harvest time weed control options in
the face of growing herbicide resistant weed concerns. The methods include a chaff chute where the resulting row is burned to a machine, which not only collects the weed seeds but mechanically crushes them, rendering them not viable to grow. It’s a system that would obviously be effective, with reports for Australia of up to 95 per cent of key weed seeds being destroyed, it but comes at a high price too. The unit is in the range of a quarter of a million in Canadian cash, and when you think of how many producers operate multiple combines, the investment would be massive, and at this point, very hard to justify. Of course, as farmers face growing herbicide resistance, alternative weed control will gain interest and kick-starting the control by destroying weed seeds at harvest is certainly a logical avenue to explore. And you have to think combine manufacturers will be looking at the technology and how to integrate it into the combine itself. At that point the idea of seed crushing will be more viable. Certainly harvest control of weeds will become a more important part of an overall weed strategy moving forward, it just needs to be cost-effective to find greater farmer uptake here.

Quebec releases proposal for “values charter” Provincial REGINA - A Saskatchewan advocate for the so-called liberation multiple sclerosis therapy says she’s disappointed and sad that a clinical trial has been cancelled. Michelle Walsh argues now is not the time to back down on testing the therapy that involves opening blocked neck veins. Saskatchewan had planned to spend $2.2 million to have 86 patients join the trial at a medical centre in Albany, N.Y. But the centre has told the province that the trial is cancelled because it couldn’t get enough volunteers for a valid result. Walsh underwent liberation therapy in Bulgaria in 2010 and wasn’t eligible for the clinical trial. She says the procedure helped her and other Saskatchewan patients are owed answers about the science behind liberation therapy. National QUEBEC CITY, Que. - The Quebec government is to release its proposals today for a so-called “values charter” aimed at restricting religious clothing and symbols in the public sector.
The Parti Quebecois government will reveal its suggestions in the provincial legislature, 13 months after making an election pledge to introduce such a plan. While polls have suggested the idea could be popular in Quebec, it has been denounced by some politicians inside the province and from many outside. The latest condemnation came from an Ontario backbencher, on the governing Liberal side, who announced plans to table a symbolic motion related to the issue. Monte Kwinter’s motion will call on the Ontario legislature to oppose the introduction of any legislation to restrict or prohibit people’s freedom of expression and religion in public places. The minority Parti Quebecois government cannot pass legislation alone and has said it will seek consensus with other parties before moving forward. The latest media leaks suggest there could be an opt-out clause for some institutions — with one report describing it as a renewable, five-year exemption. *** OTTAWA - Fresh details are emerging about investigations into those fraudulent robocalls during the last election.

International THE HAGUE, Netherlands - The trial of Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto opened Tuesday at the International Criminal court, with the chief prosecutor saying Ruto deliberately orchestrated deadly violence in the aftermath of his country’s disputed 2007 election. Ruto smiled confidently as blinds were raised between the courtroom and public gallery before Presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji outlined the background of the proceedings. Ruto and broadcaster Joshua Sang are both accused of murder, deportation and persecution of political opponents in Kenya’s Rift Valley region in late 2007 and early 2008. Both men pleaded not guilty to all the charges. The trial is a critical test for the ICC to demonstrate it can successfully prosecute an African leader. In November, Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta will stand trial on similar charges. Prosecutors have complained of widespread witness intimidation leading into the trial and some witnesses have refused to testify, throwing the strength of the case into question. The start of the trial was twice delayed to give defence attorneys more time to prepare. Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told the court and a public gallery packed with Kenyan supporters of the two defendants that Ruto used networks within his Kalenjin tribe to target political opponents and members of the rival Kikuyu tribe.

Michael Sona told several people he was involved in the misleading phone calls during the last election, Elections Canada alleges in a newly unsealed court document. However, some of them said they didn’t know whether or not to believe Sona — who worked on the campaign of Guelph, Ont., Conservative candidate Marty Burke _ saying he was prone to exaggeration. The document also reveals Conservative Party lawyer Arthur Hamilton sat in as Elections Canada investigators interviewed witnesses in March and April of 2012. These new details, which have not been proven in court, are contained in a document called an information to obtain a production order. Until Monday, much of that document had been under a publication ban. Media outlets are now allowed to publish some details but much of the document, including the names of the witnesses and other key details, remain under the ban. In the document, Elections Canada investigator Allan Mathews says he has grounds to believe “that Michael Sona, in the period shortly after election day, advised several of his acquaintances of participation in the false calls made to Guelph voters.” Elections Canada’s investigation has focused on the Guelph riding in southwestern Ontario, where a number of residents say they received automated phone calls from someone claiming to be from Elections Canada and directing them

Beauty Between the Seasons Get the scoop on fall fashion trends Clothing styles change from season to season. Each year established and budding new designers call forth their creative energy to entertain the buying public with a bevy of new wardrobe items and accessories. The Fall/Winter 2013 season is no exception. Borrowing from the past but with a nod for the future, key elements emerged during the runway shows of leading designers in the fashion meccas of New York, Milan and Paris. In addition, Pantone, the standard in design colors, released their predictions of the seasons top color trends for fall and winter. Here’s a look ahead at to what should be filling stores and closets in the next few months. i t Color Expect to see plenty of green-hued items this fall. Mossy greens, yellow-based linden green, deep green, as well as Pantone’s color of the year, emerald green, will each be in-style this fall. In addition to various shades of green, expect to see some other pops of color straight out of nature. Exotic reds, acai purple and azure blues are just a few complementary colors that are expected to mix with the fall standards of slate gray and khaki. Pattern Estevan There were interesting Oxbow patterns and color combiCarlyle nations from a number of Carnduff designers. While fashionMosomin
forward shoppers may not see the same level of detail at mainstream stores than they could expect to find at designer boutiques, there certainly may be a sampling of some of the prints and patterns that adorned the runways. Modernized florals in earthy colors and graphic prints that take their cue from Fair Isle knits and alpine animals were some of the showcased trends. In addition, Eastern European florals and color-blocking reminiscent of Soviet heritage were commonplace. Folk-inspired florals on dresses and jackets also could be seen. For those who want something a bit more amorphous in pattern but with
the same punch of color, artistic pastel pops of colors had some designers showing off a watercolor painting effect on some of their lines. Vivid colors paired with bold patterns completed these eye-catching looks. Old Is New Again In addition to the patterns and colors that were showcased on the runway, some designers were resurrecting some trends of the not-so-distant past. At Miu Miu and Blenciaga, crop-tops made many nostalgic for the early 1990s. Plaid flannel also graced some models, furthering the early 1990s look.
Although skinny jeans have quite possibly taken over for men and women alike, some designers have brought back the bootcut, which is more universally flattering for a wider array of figures. In the 1980s, logo sweatshirts and Tshirts from Benetton and Esprit were quite popular. Nowadays, new label-heavy clothing is a growing trend once again. Continuing to buck all trends, quirky designer Rad Hourini offers his monochromatic take on fashion. His styles are not only without color, they tend to be asexual as well as very graphic and symmetrical.
