Jeers that after three years you would think that the audio levels in the arena Place would be figured out by now. Jeers to the Estevan football coach who, after being ejected from the game chose to walk across the field, towards the stands full of young players and fans while he continued to berate the officials using more four letter words than I have heard in a long time. Jeers to some of the football fans whose only purpose seems to be to berate the officials and swear at them throughout the game. I will think twice before I attend another football game and will never bring a young child to watch again. That was some example you set today for all the younger players who stayed to cheer on the older boys.

Ecuadorian experience changes student An experience in South America may have altered the future trajectory of one Lampman student. Carley Greening knew she wanted to get involved with Free the Children the moment she attended the Me to We conference in Saskatoon last year. Immersed in the arena with thousands of other students, she took in the messages of the motivational speakers and musicians who spoke and performed at the conference. After attending the event, she was particularly inspired by speaker Molly Burke and wanted to get involved with Free the Children in a deeper and more hands-on way. That ultimately meant going to Ecuador to help build a school this past summer. “I thought that would just be a huge thing in someone’s life,” said Carley of building the school. “My friends actually went to the Dominican with another organization, and they came back, and I could totally tell that they changed and got all these new perspectives.” The now Grade 11 student flew to Ecuador in late July for the 16-day trip. Carley was one of two Saskatchewan girls who went to Ecuador. The pair met at the Regina airport and flew to Toronto together, spending the night in the city with the rest of their group and flying to South America the next day. “We got really close, closer than most of the people in my class,” said Carley of her short time with her new friends. They spent their first couple of days in Quito, Ecuador’s capital, acclimatizing to the increase in altitude because they would be working in the mountains. Arriving in the village at the site of the proposed school, the team of students got to work building the first stage. Another team would

come in after them to build the next phase. “We put down some of the flooring, about halfway. We got to see the kids walk on the floor for the first time. That was the moment when you realized how big of a project it was (to them).” Carley and her group finished more than what they were expected to. The next group was supposed to begin work on the floor, but her group completed some sanding on the floorboards. “We weren’t supposed to be thinking of the floor yet. Our foreman was pretty happy,” she said. The schools in the area are made mostly of stone, and Carley said they had more of a feeling of a “prison.” The structure they were building had a wood frame. The Ecuadorian community raised 10 per cent of the costs for the school, so the community can feel some ownership over the

building. “It gives them a lot more respect for the school. They can say ‘this is ours, too,’ instead of it being something that they don’t own,” said Carley of the initiative that will educate more than 150 students each year. “I got to see all the kids that were in the school. They played soccer with us a lot.” They did have some time to sightsee as well, with the guide convincing Carley during a nature hike to allow a scorpion spider to be placed on her face. “It’s the size of my hand, and I was so scared. But you can’t freak out because then it will bite you,” she said. “We learned a lot about the culture. We did a day in the life where we went to a farmer’s house and learned how he grew corn, and we went with the women and saw how she washed clothes in the river.” She sampled grubs and

guinea pigs while there. Guinea pigs are raised for food rather than as pets. We Day is once again going to be held in Saskatoon for the second consecutive year at the Credit Union Centre on Nov. 6. Carley and a couple of her classmates are volunteering for the event this fall, and Carley will be continuing her efforts with the Free the Children organization when she goes to Kenya next summer as part of an alumni trip, which will include another building project. Carley said her involvement with the organization going forward is something she is going to be taking seriously, and could potentially lead her into a career. “I’m pretty sure I want to be with (Free the Children). It seems like the best career choice I could possibly pick,” said Carley about her future options. “All the people I talk to who work

there are just so happy.” She said the experience has changed her and her interest in humanitarian work has only increased since her return. “I definitely feel like I’ve changed. My parents

can tell, too. A lot of the things I used to complain about, I don’t complain about anymore. I’ve become more open to everything, I realized how much time we spend on our phones.”

Helicopter parents now circling workplace It has become clear that Millennials, a term I’m not really proud to be part of, are really close to their parents, maybe even too close. Millennials are people born after 1980 and into the early 2000s. Many of you may be raising Millennials right now. Parents of these people, many of whom are now adults, are more involved in the lives of their kids than any other generation of parents. That’s not all bad. It seems that in this respect, my parents are old school. Normal is a very personal thing. Everyone has their own unique sense of it, but it just wouldn’t be normal for my parents to be heavily involved in my life. They can be interested or curious, but they certainly shouldn’t be making decisions. That’s where helicopter parents come in. Providing advice is one thing, but ultimately decisions are supposed to be our own. Still, it’s becoming more normal for parents to attend job interviews, workplaces to chat with the boss and even social events in the workplace. On the way out are the days of the bring-your-kid-to-work day, ushering in an oddly unexpected twist with the bringyour-parent-to-work day. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Google hosted its second annual take-your-parent-

If my mother ever finds herself in Estevan, I would probably show her around the office, give her a quick meet and greet with my co-workers and show her exactly where all the magic happens. That’s mostly because she is interested in my work or at least as interested as any mother can possibly feign. I certainly wouldn’t expect her to ask my boss about my performance. She may hope all is well, like all parents hope for the best for their kids, but she doesn’t need updates about how satisfied my employer is. That’s between us. There shouldn’t be parental report cards in the workplace. My parents never saw any post-secondary transcripts, because graduating was up to me. If I wanted to spend a bunch of money on an education and then flunk out of the program, well, that’s on me. It’s dangerous to have parents speaking for their children professionally. They

don’t know what they’re talking about. Everyone has a different situation and relationship with their parents. Coming from a fairly large family, especially by today’s standards, it seems normal for there to be a pretty hands-off approach now that we’re all adults. I would reckon things are a little different for one-child families. It’s not that my parents don’t care or are uninterested about my life, but they have always expected me to make my own mistakes and learn from them. They have never had any say in what post-secondary school I attended or what program I chose. They just wanted me to enjoy whatever I was doing and nobody knows that better than I do. I remember telling my mom I was offered a job in Estevan, a place she wouldn’t be able to find on a map any easier than most people can find Syria. She didn’t give me advice. She just asked if I was going to take it. Obviously, I did. That was that. Mom would probably prefer that I lived close enough for the odd Sunday dinner, but it would be absurd for her to take issue with any sort of job placement I accepted. It’s not that parents shouldn’t care. It’s all about realizing that everyone has to run their own lives, even your little shnookums who you never thought would grow up.

Imagining what has yet to be imagined When you drive around the countryside right now you see farmers harvesting one of the best looking crop in years. In spite of a spring that seemed to threaten the very idea of getting a crop in the ground, things have come together thanks to Mother Nature to produce what has the appearance of a better than average crop. And harvest so far has been a time of sunny skies and warm weather allowing farmers to put a lot of acres through the combines already. But as I drive around, I wonder what a harvest a decade from now might look like. In past columns I’ve talked about the likelihood we will see more soybeans and even potentially seed corner inching ever northward across the Canadian Prairies as new varieties make the crops viable in cooler, shorter daylight areas. We are also likely to see varieties of existing crops, which we can’t even imagine today. Genetic modification might be seen by some as a dark shadow over agriculture, but it will not be going away. The ability to continue to grow crops effectively will demand changes to the plants we grow. Whether it’s club root in canola or fusarium in wheat or bugs and disease today barely seen but which will grow in their impact on crops, many of the crop varieties

Rust was once a major issue in cereal crops, and it was plant breeders selecting for resistance that made the problem all but a distant memory. Lodging is another in-crop issue, which new varieties over the years have helped lessen in many crops. While those advancements were made through individual plant selection, GM technology looks to speed the process of development. GM also broadens options by opening plant breeding to traits borrowed from one plant and placed in another to offer the desired result. But what makes me wonder as I look out across a field of golden wheat is what technologies will arrive on the scene in the coming years to again alter what farmers grow? As sometimes happens when one is contemplating such things you pick up a magazine and gain a glance at a little of what is to come.

The magazine is The agAdvance, which is subtitled ‘Journal of Growing Innovations’, so it often shows glimpses of new technology. “In a small settlement in southern Israel, a group of scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are fine-tuning a new method for delivering disease-resistant traits to seeds without genetically modifying the plant. The process is similar to a vaccination, which protects a person from a disease by injecting them with a small sample of the neutralized virus. The virus triggers the development of antibodies that protect the subject from being infected,” starts the story in question. While the concept is still very much still that — a concept — the potential of such a technique is intriguing to say the least. Limited at present by the fact the benefits do not transfer to subsequent crops, that barrier might well be overcome in time too. And this is technology that has at least advanced to the stage of being in the public eye. What of the research still so much in its infancy that it is but a dream? Remembering rust resistance was once just a dream. We can only imagine what crops science will give farmers in the years ahead. The results will be seen in the fields a decade and more from now with varieties and crops barely imagined today.

Rat infestation on B.C. islands targeted National GWAII HAANAS, B.C. - Parks Canada staff are trying to take back two remote northern islands in the Haida Gwaii archipelago from a festering sea of rats, dropping poison pellets from a helicopter for the first time in Canada. The aerial drop is the second phase of project Night Birds Returning, which experts hope will eradicate the rats introduced by ships that now number in the hundreds of thousands on Murchison and Faraday islands. Laurie Wein, with Parks Canada in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, says one island in particular was once home to the largest colony of ancient murrelet in the world, with more than 200,000 breeding pairs. There are now just 14,000 breeding pairs of the endangered seabirds. Wein says the rats have no natural predators on the islands, and eat seabird eggs, chicks and even adult birds. The aerial drop is part of a five-year, $2.5 million program to restore the natural habitat on four of the Haida Gwaii islands, and if it’s successful, the eradication program will expand to other islands in the archipelago off the northern coast of British Columbia. *** OTTAWA - Hundreds of frustrated scientists clad in their telltale white lab coats descended Monday on Parliament Hill to demand that the Harper government stop muzzling scientists and cutting research funding. “What do we want? Evidence-based decision-

making!” chanted the protesters as they gathered in the shadow of the Peace Tower, complaining about what they see as the government’s efforts to commercialize research. The very fact that such a typically apolitical group felt the need to make their voices heard speaks volumes, said Jeremy Kerr, a biology professor at the University of Ottawa. “As a commentary on the state of affairs, when people like me start showing up wearing their lab coats having come from their laboratories, things are pretty bleak,” Kerr told the crowd. The fundamental message is “simplicity itself,” Kerr said: “Sound policy needs sound science.” “The facts do not change just because the Harper government has chosen ignorance over evidence and ideology over honesty.” The Ottawa rally was part of a national series of “Stand Up for Science” protests taking place across the country, organized by Ottawabased science advocacy group Evidence for Democracy. The group argues that evidence-based decisionmaking must inform governmental funding decisions on science. They say current funding has instead shifted towards commercialization of research. International NEW YORK, N.Y. - A feud over the fortune of an eccentric copper heiress whose father founded Las Vegas is poised to come to a head in a New York courtroom. The relatives say a coterie of hospital executives, medical professionals and Clark’s lawyer and accountant took advantage of their access to the secluded, aged heiress to manipulate their way into her millions of dollars. The beneficiaries say Clark was simply a generous woman who wanted to help those who helped her. Clark’s father, U.S. Sen. William A. Clark, was one of the richest Americans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. *** RIO DE JANEIRO Brazilian President Dilma

Rousseff on Tuesday postponed a state visit to the U.S. to protest an American spy program that has aggressively targeted the Latin American nation’s government and private citizens alike. Rousseff was to be honoured with a state dinner next month, an event meant to highlight strengthening ties between the Western Hemisphere’s two biggest nations. Instead, revelations of the National Security Agency’s spy program and Rousseff’s dissatisfaction with the U.S. response to questions about the espionage made it impossible to continue with that trip for now, her office said in a statement. “Given the proximity of the scheduled state visit to Washington and in the absence of a timely investigation ... there aren’t conditions for this trip to be made,” the statement read. “The Brazilian government is confident that when the question is settled in an adequate manner, the state visit can quickly occur.” The decision comes after a series of reports on Brazil’s Globo TV gave details about the NSA program’s efforts in Brazil. American journalist Glenn Greenwald, who is based in Rio de Janeiro and broke the story of the NSA espionage program after obtaining leaked documents from Edward Snowden, has worked with Globo on its reports. Rousseff has crafted a pragmatic foreign policy more in line with U.S. views than that of her predecessor and political mentor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Combines grinding away and fingers are crossed By Norm Park For Agri-News With favourable weather conditions prevailing over most of the province heading into the second and third week of September, all signs were pointing to a better than average crop coming off the Saskatchewan landscape this fall. Significant harvest progress was noted in the first week of September, allowing provincial farmers to move ahead of the five-year average harvest pace. In total, about 35 to 40 per cent of the provincial crop is combined and more than 40 per cent is now swathed or ready to straight cut. The harvest rate in southwest Saskatchewan continues to lead all others with 46 per cent of the crop reportedly combined by Sept. 9 while 28 per cent was combined in this part of the province by that date. With a couple more weeks to add to that report, and with the continuation of good harvest weather, the assumption could be made that 50 per cent of the 2013 crop is now combined in southeast Saskatchewan or even better. Harvesting also continued in the east central region that was rated as being just a little slower than in the southeast while the west central region was listed at nearly 50 per cent too, if the template from the Sept. 9 report was followed. Harvest operations continued to lag slightly in the northwest and northeast sectors, but not to the point of concern. Crop development was

speeded up in all sectors as warm weather prevailed over the province for the three weeks. Above average yields were reported in most areas with spring wheat averaging about 43 bushels per acre while barley was coming in around 66 per acre. Canola was listed at 35 bushels per acre and lentils were 1,600 pounds per acre and peas were around 42 bushels per acre. Outram area producer Wes Morstad brought in his

lentil crop in early September and his durum wheat crop wasn’t far behind on Sept. 7. He said he expected that crop would be all off within two weeks, along with some spring wheat. A 350-acre ﬁeld of ﬁeld peas on the Morstad farm would also be harvested before the end of September he predicted, as long as the warmer, dry harvest conditions prevailed. “We haven’t had any equipment issues. Oh sure, a few odds and ends of things

that had to be repaired but nothing serious,” he said. Morstad and his father kept two combines operating continuously during the busy harvest season, bringing in all the products from the 4,500 acres they put into production this year. He said that since he hadn’t delivered any of this year’s crop yet, he wasn’t exactly sure about the yield and/or protein count, but on the surface and to the experienced eye, it certainly looked like a near bumper

quality and volume. Some areas in the south of the province experienced thunderstorm interruptions to the operations in the early going, with some getting as much as 86 mm of rain. Grasshoppers were considered a major factor in only a few crops this year with more damage being inﬂicted by wind and earlier hail storms. Some of the regions that received huge downpours suffered crop deterioration due to excessive moisture.

Topsoil moisture on cropland was rated as three per cent surplus on Sept. 10 and 59 per cent adequate while 30 per cent was considered short and eight per cent, very short. Hay and pasture topsoil moisture was rated as one per cent surplus and 54 per cent adequate while 35 and 10 per cent were rated as short and very short, respectively. Most of the land in the southeast part of the province was rated adequate or better.

Agroforestry Centre can be saved, says coalition A coalition of Western Canadian farm groups along with some local governments are attempting to save the Agroforesty Development Centre at Indian Head that is being abandoned by the federal government this fall. The group, headed by the Agricultural Producers of Saskatchewan, said that if they can get one-year’s worth of bridge funding from the federal government, they will be able to take over and continue to operate the centre, often referred to as the tree farm. A business plan for the operation has been developed by McNair Business Development Inc. of Regina, which was commissioned by the coalition that goes by the name of the Western Canada Tree Nursery Coalition. The nursery and shelterbelt program would require the transition funding and then should be self-sustainable, said Norm Hall, president of the Agricultural Producers of Saskatchewan (APAS). “We’re asking Agriculture and Agri-food Canada to fulfill the promises Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz has

made,” said Hall. Other members of the coalition include Keystone Agriculture Producers of Manitoba, Alberta Federation of Agriculture, Canadian Federation of Agriculture, B.C. Grain Producers Association, Peace River Regional District as well as the Town and Rural Municipality of Indian Head. The tree nursery has been in operation for 111 years and has grown more than 610 million trees for shelterbelts for farms and pasture lands to prevent wind erosion and conserve moisture while producing oxygen across the prairies. After the 2012 budget was presented, Ritz announced the program was being cancelled and the centre closed by the end of 2013. Since then, he has met with the coalition representatives and promised to keep the nursery in operation as a going concern up to that deadline date. But since then, the coalition noted, the forestry centre has been laying off staff and only five employees were left at the end of August. The saviour group is calculating

that by selling the trees to producers at between $1 and $2 per tree, they would be able to cover the operations and administrative costs involved in the tree farm that currently grows about three million trees a year. But to do that, order forms have to go out quickly, and since the peak period for that process, has already passed, Hall said he figured next year’s orders would total about half the usual volume. He said the program, in essence, has to be re-established at this point. With half the number of trees on order, the farmers and other potential purchasers would probably have to pay the $2 price. The coalition is also wanting to hire back as many of the 30 full-time and 30 seasonal workers they could following the dissolution of the governmentcontrolled operation. The coalition members said they were adamant in their pursuit of making the transition this year so that a whole planting season will not be lost and the tree farm will be able to transition to new ownership in a fluid and efficient manner.

Chilean market opens Major funds forwarded for canola research to Canadian beef

Beginning this summer, Canadian beef is gaining full access to the Chilean market. Canadian beef producers will benefit from this access for beef exports, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a state visit to Canada by Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera. “Our government is working hard to increase market access for Canada’s world-class beef,” said Harper. He said the announcement would be great news for the beef industry. The deal means unrestricted access to Chile’s beef market. This renewed access will be worth up to $5 million annually with potential to double that trade growth within three years.

In 2003, a number of markets, including Chile’s, ceased importing Canadian beef due to the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) scare. Since then, Canada has strengthened existing BSE measures and introduced new ones to protect human and animal health, maintain consumer confidence in Canadian beef products and support market access for cattle, beef and related products. In 2012 Chile imported just under $828 million worth of beef products, which outlines the potential for Canadian producers and marketers. Chile and Canada first signed a Free Trade Agreement in 1997 and since then the two-way merchandise trade system has tripled to about $2.5 billion annually.

The federal government has announced a new investment in canola disease research is being made in collaboration with SaskCanola. The contribution will bring the total government and industry investment in canola research to more than $25 million over the next five years. “This unprecedented investment in innovation demonstrates huge confidence in the canola industry,” said Canola Council of Canada (CCC) president Patti Miller. “Our industry, including the

grower groups, the scientific community and government has worked closely together to ensure the investment will have maximum impact.” Agriculture and Agrifood Minister Gerry Ritz announced on Sept. 4 an investment of up to $4.2 million in federal funding in partnership with a $1.4 million check-off investment by Alberta and Saskatchewan canola producers. Ritz had earlier announced a $15 million in-

vestment in canola research co-ordinated by CCC, which combines with more than $5 million in industry investment. The projects will focus on clear strategic themes such as canola oil and meal nutrition, health and integrated pest management, yield and quality optimization, integrated crop management and sustainability of production, supply surveillance and forecasting and science cluster technology transfers.

Canadian beef exports to China already tripled

There has been dramatic growth in the volume of Canadian beef heading over to China these past few months. Compared with 2012 beef trade levels, the growth has been significant according to Canada Beef Inc. Data gleaned from Chinese customs offices show that from January to June of this year, a total of 10,088 tonnes of Canadian beef, valued at over $35 million, were shipped to China. This represents nearly three times the total amount exported in all of 2012 and already surpasses the previous record set in 2002. According to a recent Rabobank report, beef consumption in China has risen steadily over the last few years with rising incomes, dietary shift and urbanization driving the Chinese appetite for beef. With local production unable to grow fast enough to meet the increasing demand, the Chinese market provides a great opportunity for exports from key beef producing countries like Canada. This country is one of only seven eligible to export beef to China, and currently Canada has eight beef processing plants certified to export to that market. Canadian beef exported to China includes short plate, chuck eye roll and top blade cuts. China also imports loin cuts including tenderloin, rib eye and strip loin to serve high-end food service customers. “Our strategy in the Chinese market focuses on maintaining strong relationships with Canadian beef and veal exporters and key regional Chinese clients to increase brand awareness and loyalty, and facilitate on-going trade in eligible beef products,” said Rob Meijer, president of Canada Beef Inc., which works with key contacts in the Chinese culinary community such as high-profile chefs and culinary schools to build awareness and understanding of the Canadian beef advantage with this influential audience and potential buyers. New bee species named after curator A new species of bees has been named after Dr. Cory Sheffield, the curator of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum’s invertebrate zoology department. Mexalictus sheffieldi, from the mountains of Guatemala, is one of 21 new species of Mesoamerican bees described in a paper recently published by Sheila Dumesh from York University. A leading expert on Canadian bees, Sheffield discovered the species while examining a vial of bee specimens collected in 1987 by researchers at the Canadian National Collection. “Biodiversity surveys often yield a lot of specimens that researchers are not specifically looking for at that time but are still very valuable to science,” Sheffield said. “This really demonstrates the importance of museums like the RSM collecting and storing all insects collected during biodiversity surveys. The material may help researchers from other institutions for years to come.” The single Mexalictus sheffieldi specimen is currently housed at York University where it remains for future study. Dumesh, a former graduate student

at the same university and a former colleague of Sheffield’s decided to name the specimen after its discoverer. “I chose to name this new bee species in honour of Dr. Cory Sheffield not only because he provided me with the sole specimen, but more importantly for his help and involvement with the project,” Dumesh said. “He is a fellow entomologist and a very good friend, so it’s a nice gesture.” Since joining the RSM in 2012, Sheffield has shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for bees and other insects through museum displays and unique learning opportunities. Over the summer, he joined students and fellow scientists participating in the RSM’s Bio-Blitz survey. With the hope of discovering new records for the province, and potentially new species, the survey focused on identifying bees and other pollinators found within Saskatchewan. Mexalictus sheffieldi was collected and stored for more than 20 years before its discovery; similarly, the RSM will help preserve specimens collected during the Bio-Blitz for present and future scientific study.

pointed out that not only to honeybees provide an important food product, they are also playing an instrumental role in pollinating forages and crops. Those two factors make the bees and the beekeepers an important part of the agriculture industry in Saskatchewan. The apiculture industry has enjoyed several consecutive years of growth. There were 125,000 bee colonies in Saskatchewan in 2012 compared with 95,000 in 2007. Last year Saskatchewan’s beekeepers and bees produced 23 million pounds of honey, an increase of about 38 per cent from 2007. The value of the honey in national and international markets was just under $40 million, an increase of about 100 per cent from 2007.
