Cheers to my neighbour for taking my recycling to the curb when I forget. I always forget.

Cheers to the new helipad at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan. That will be a real asset to the region.

Jeers that there is a speed indicator in the 1200 block of First Street by the playpark. Perhaps a better place to slow down speeding drivers would be in a school zone? The play parks have been closed since the end of August.

Cheers to being able to sign up for alerts that notify you when your recycling is scheduled for pick up. It helps me so much.

Jeers to the Ministry of Health on its continued silence toward Estevan’s application for a CT scanner at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Cheers to the City of Estevan for their action during a watermain break last weekend. We had access to water for a couple of hours each morning and evening and it made all the difference. Radius Credit Union and Torquay Credit Union would like to announce a recommendation for a merger of their entities to their membership. Radius Credit Union has 5 rural branches in Avonlea, Ceylon, Ogema, Pangman and Radville and Torquay Credit Union has 2 rural branches in Torquay and Tribune. Over the course of the past several months Torquay has determined that it would be in the member’s best interest to consider partnering with a larger, like minded credit union. Several credit unions were approached, after careful consideration the Board of Directors agreed unanimously in recommending to their membership that a merger be pursued with Radius. “Capacity issues have been a driver, our members have been asking for some time now for an increased product and services suite. This merger of two like-minded rural entities will allow us the capacity to honor those requests” said Ann Favreau, CEO of Torquay Credit Union. “A larger more diverse asset base will provide operational economies of scale and improve efficiencies allowing for enhanced member value” said Ted Struthers, CEO of Radius Credit Union. “We have had a positive long term working relationship with Torquay Credit Union and look forward to strengthening that relationship.” The merger would see Radius Credit Union with $244 million in assets and 46 staff. Both entities are strong supporters of their communities and their cooperative roots. Membership information meetings and voting meetings will be announced in the near future.

Appreciating the underappreciated library During Banned Book Week we can all take time to appreciate the importance of free thought and connecting with worlds beyond our borders. It’s important to understand that books are still banned in this accepting world of ours. They aren’t just banned in cranky, conservative backwoods but at libraries and schools all over the world. The American Library Association says there were more than 450 challenges to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2012. The 10 most challenged books included Captain Underpants, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Kite Runner, which were reported for their offensive language, sexual content and racism. Oh my! Too often when people think about banned books, they picture a book burning through a veil of grainy black and white images or video. The banning of books is regularly thought of as a period in our history when people were just ill informed, uneducated or terrified of new ideas. Our world is chock full of intelligent, forward thinking and reasonable people, but that hasn’t led to a culture of complete openness when it comes to our literature.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers The banning of books has ultimately led to some great things for humanity, the same way oppression has. It is struggles like these that allow us to do some pretty incredible things. Without banned books we wouldn’t have Fahrenheit 451, a book about banning books that was also banned. We still need writers who push the boundaries of acceptable content so we can continue to grow more open and connected with the world. What we really need to support, or continue to support, is our local libraries. The literary world is so important for so many reasons, and our libraries give us access to all these books and ideas for free. Sure, they aren’t free. Our taxes go to libraries, but that gives everyone one more reason to make regular stops in the library. If you don’t do it because you love and ap-

preciate books, at least do it out of spite. If Big Government is going to take your money and invest it in a dome of cultural wonder, you might as well take advantage of all the wonder inside. Libraries represent a world of inexpensive, easy and available education. It’s important for people to step outside of their intellectual bounds and experience something new. If you want to know what it’s like to grow up in Iran following the Islamic Revolution, read Persepolis. It has been banned, so it must be great. That’s one of the best things about literature. It allows us to see a perspective and a side of the world we may never get to experience otherwise. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t grow up in Iran during that period. It’s libraries that make it so easy for us to experience what the world is like for other people, whether those people are fictional characters or people from our history. Libraries allow us to open our minds and understand our world a little better, but that only happens if we support the free flow of thought and those books that contain all the great ideas we need to know about.

Keep diverse hog breeds on the farm While I can’t say I’m anything near a regular reader of the magazine Hobby Farms, the recent Sept/Oct issue piqued my interest when I saw it on the racks at McNally Robinson in Saskatoon on a recent weekend getaway. The feature story highlighted on the cover was entitled ‘Heritage Hogs for Pork.’ Growing up on a registered pig farm, anything on hogs still draws my interest. I can recall when still a youngster doing a display on the wide range of pig breeds actually out there, at a time when maybe a half dozen had a sizable foothold on the Canadian Prairies. Since those days, the number of pure breeds raised here has if not declined, at least seen a big drop in numbers. Today’s hog industry, beleaguered as it is, revolves around hybrid lines, which cross purebreds, predominantly Yorkshire and Landrace, to take advantage of the vigour such crossing provides. Under current practise for raising hogs, intensive, indoor operations, such hybrids excel in key areas such as converting feed to pork and average daily gains. As a result, at least in Canada and for that matter many major pork-producing countries, breeds such as Berkshire, Tamworth, Large English Black and numerous other breeds have seen numbers decline. Many breeds are at best rarities today, with

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist a number out right endangered. A few, like the Oxford Sandy Black, may be extinct. The Canadian-developed Lacombe is sadly among the breeds, which teeters on disappearing. The Lacombe was developed at the Lacombe Research station in Alberta, being released to the public in 1958. When it celebrated its 50th birthday in 2008 a couple of hundred were thought to exist. Which brings me to a secondary interest I have long had, that of the preservation of rare breeds of livestock. There is something to be said for genetic diversity within a species, and that includes domestic farm animals. Some breeds do some things better than others, and if a breed is lost, a trait the industry, or at least a segment of the industry, may one day need is lost too. The Hobby Farms story looks at a niche market for raising heritage breeds and selling the pork as a premium product. Such operations are generally old school, with pigs raised as much as possible

on pasture. On the Prairies, winter puts a crimp in such an operation, although like cattle hogs, at least mature sows will forage standing forages with some grain supplementation and a warm place to sleep. The hogs from the high-density farms of today, though, are not the best choice to raise old school. I use the term old school because dry sows on pasture, and pigs raised on straw, were once the norm, not the exception. To look at raising grass-fed hogs effectively, it means seeking out breeds such as Berkshire, Kunekune, Duroc, Tamworth, Large English Blacks and Red Wattle. None of these breeds are going to suddenly take over large-scale operations, but they can have their place. And, since there is seemingly growing public pressure against intensive livestock, and increasing interest in the idea of a 100mile diet, the door may be opening to more niche production of a less intensive variety. That is why rare livestock breeds should be maintained. No one knows exactly what the face of livestock production may look like in the future. There may come a time the traits of the Mulefoot or Mangalitsa are needed, and if we have allowed the breed to disappear, then those traits are gone too. Hopefully agriculture is wise enough to see the benefits that might be gained by being good stewards of our purebred livestock genetics.

Sunday no longer a day of rest Provincial REGINA - Saskatchewan Labour Minister Don Morgan is defending the province’s move to eliminate a reference to Sunday as a day of rest in labour legislation. Morgan says Saskatchewan is more diverse than it used to be and it’s not appropriate to legislate a day of rest. He says other provinces are making similar changes as they update their legislation. The comments come after the Catholic archbishop of Regina raised concerns about eliminating Sunday as a day of rest. Archbishop Daniel Bohan says the omission can be understandable if it’s an attempt to recognize religious diversity, but he would rather see the law broadened to give a day of rest to any faith. Bohan says without that, a troubling view could emerge where working people are seen only as inputs of economic production. National GATINEAU, Que. -A remote-control vehicle has located a sunken Canadian Coast Guard helicopter that crashed during a routine ice patrol in the Arctic Ocean, killing three men. The Transportation Safety Board says in a release that the vehicle has found the Messerschmitt Bo-105 chopper that went down Sept. 9 in the M’Clure Strait. The board says a team consisting of the Coast Guard, the TSB and others is working to recover the wreckage. The goal is to retrieve the helicopter as quickly as possible, but the board says ice and weather conditions pose a significant challenge to the operation and the safety of those involved. The commander of the icebreaker Amundsen was among those killed in the crash. Post-mortem examinations have suggested the men likely survived the impact, but later died of hypothermia after being in the frigid water for about one hour. *** CALGARY - Calgary police say they will consult with the Crown on whether they can get involved in a two-year dispute between an Alberta pensioner and the man she says has claimed her rental property as a sovereign “embassy.” Rebekah Caverhill says she has been billed for renova-

tions the man did inside the home and that he had a lien placed on the property. Caverhill says the man, Andreas Pirelli, called himself a “Freemen-on-the-Land,” is only paying about half the rent, and has already ignored one eviction notice. Police initially referred Caverhill to the civil courts, but Acting Insp. Julien Gagne now says officers are consulting with Crown prosecutors to see if there are any criminal charges that can be laid. “We’ve been providing her guidance as to what actions to take regarding the civil portion of her matter,” said Gagne. “We’re also consulting with the Crown prosecutors office to determine if there’s anything criminal stemming from the overarching interactions and involvement with our alleged offender.” Gagne said it is unlikely charges will be laid, but investigators want to make sure. Gagne said so-called sovereign citizens haven’t been as serious a problem in Canada as they have been in the United States, but he does note there is a mandatory training course about the movement that all Calgary police officers are required to take. International BEIRUT - Syrian opposition groups and international relief organizations are warning of the risk of mass starvation across the country, especially in the besieged Damascus suburbs where a gas attack killed hundreds last month. With the world’s attention focused on the regime’s chemical weapons, activists said six people — including an 18-month girl — have died for lack of food in one of the stricken suburbs in recent weeks. Save the Children said in an appeal Monday that more than 4 million Syrians, more than half of them children, do not have enough to eat. Food shortages have been compounded by an explosion in prices. “The world has stood and watched as the children of Syria have been shot, shelled and traumatized by the horror of war,” said Roger Hearn, Save the Children’s regional director for the Middle East. “The conflict has already left thousands of children dead, and is now threatening their means of staying alive.”

Thousands of people are believed trapped in suburbs east and west of the capital that have been held for months by rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad. Regime troops are besieging the areas, and residents say food is increasingly had to find. Rebels say they are trying to break the blockade. The suburbs were the site of the Aug. 21 attack that a U.N. report found included the use of the nerve gas sarin. They were home to more than 2 million people before the war, but it is unclear how many are there now.

Stadium could become prisoner processing centre National TORONTO - David Clarkson will play in the Maple Leafs’ pre-season game against the Senators on Tuesday night. Clarkson received an automatic 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to join a fight, but that does not begin until the start of the regular season Oct. 1. Until then, Clarkson is free to play in pre-season games. Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said it’s important for Clarkson to play as much

as possible now before he’s sent to the sidelines to serve the suspension. Carlyle added that Clarkson will travel with the Leafs to Montreal and Philadelphia for the team’s first two regular-season games and practise with the hope that he stays “as gameready as possible.” The 29-year-old rightwinger did not speak to reporters after the morning skate and has not addressed the media since Sunday night’s game. to his suspension. The collective bargaining agreement states that a player has 48 hours to appeal to the commissioner. Once the commissioner makes his decision on that appeal, the NHL Players’ Association has seven days to take the case to a neutral arbitrator. It is not clear on what grounds Clarkson would be appealing. The NHLPA filed an appeal on behalf of Phoenix Coyotes enforcer Paul Bissonnette last week, according to his agent Mark Guy. Bissonnette was given the same automatic 10-game suspension. Leafs forward Phil Kessel, who also did not speak to reporters, had an afternoon disciplinary hearing with the NHL via telephone. *** TORONTO - Tennis Canada president and chief executive officer Michael Downey will resign at the end of the year to take on a similar job with England’s Lawn Tennis Association. “Since joining the organization in 2004, Michael

I am so proud of what we have done together with our partners to grow the sport across all disciplines in Canada. “I depart with mixed feelings because Tennis Canada is a great organization comprised of great people including a best in class board of directors. I wish the organization and sport even greater success under a new leader. I will be cheering from the sidelines.” Tennis Canada hopes to have Downey’s replacement in place by the end of the year. Downey will replace Roger Draper at the Lawn Tennis Association. International LONDON - The NFL is

back in London boasting the star power of Adrian Peterson and Ben Roethlisberger. Trouble is, their teams have nothing to brag about. The Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers are both 0-3 heading into Sunday’s game at Wembley Stadium, and a fourth loss will all but put the playoffs out of reach for one of them. The first of two regularseason NFL games is expected to be a sellout despite the teams’ current woes. “It doesn’t bother me. I love the atmosphere,” said Rachel Green, who with husband Matt has been to all six of the NFL games played at Wembley. “I prefer it to be close, which it will more likely be with them both 0-3.” As of Tuesday, about 84,000 tickets had been sold, with only singles and premium seats still up for grabs. The Vikings arrived in London on Tuesday and were already mixing with local schoolchildren and fans as part of the duties of the designated home team. The Steelers arrive Friday. All eyes will be on Peterson, the Vikings running back, and Roethlisberger, the Steelers quarterback, as they look to lead their clubs to victory with their seasons teetering on the brink. Minnesota lost 31-27 to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, while the Steelers fell 40-23 to the Chicago Bears. *** RIO DE JANEIRO - A

World Cup stadium being built in the isolated Brazilian state of Amazonas may not become a white elephant after all. At least one judge in the area has come up with a post-World Cup use: a prisoner processing centre. Brazil is readying 12 stadiums for next year’s World Cup, and several — including the new stadium in Manaus — will be little used after the tournament. FIFA and Brazilian officials were the subject of widespread protests three months ago during the Confederations Cup, a warm-up for the World Cup. Millions took to the streets to protest spending billions on sports events in a country with poor public services, high taxes and stark social inequality. Brazil is spending an estimated $3.5 billion on stadiums for the World Cup, part of a total of $13.3 billion for related infrastructure needed to host soccer’s biggest event. Spending on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics will be similar. Alvaro Corado, spokesman for the Amazonas state court system, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Judge Sabino Marques had proposed a novel idea. “He would, perhaps, suggest to the government of the state of Amazonas that the stadium be used as a processing centre for prisoners after the World Cup,” Corado said, quoting Marques.
