Cheers to Parkway Service for such wonderful customer service. I called 10 minutes before closing with a tire that kept going flat on me, and desperately needed it fixed. They told me to bring it right over, and I was on my way home in a very short time. They could have easily told me to bring it in the next day. They were so wonderful!

Cheers to the Heaven’s Flowered Highway campaign and all those who support twinning the highway! Cheers to the kind lady at Drewitz School of Dance on registration day who let me go ahead of her to pay for my items as she saw my newborn baby was getting fussy. Thank you for your kindness. It was greatly appreciated. :)

Jeers to front yard garbage cans. They make walking down the sidewalks a very smelly, gaggy experience. Jeers to smokers who smoke in front of entrances, litter our town with their butts and use our children’s playgrounds as their personal ashtrays, keep your gross habit to yourself!

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

Renovations complete at St. Giles With the renovations at St. Giles Anglican Church in Estevan mostly complete, the church’s pastor said it’s the perfect metaphor for modernizing the church with local parishioners. Along with a new face on the southwest corner of the church, the building received all new offices, washrooms and a highly upgraded kitchen. The roof of the new foyer was completed in the style of the original building. Pastor Mark Osborne arrived at St. Giles after the renovation had already begun, so while all he knows is for his church to be under construction, he’s happy the work is mostly done and the intrusions mostly over. The new front entrance on 12th Avenue began to be used in early July. “We’re quite pleased. We’re hoping we’ll be able to grow into our new building. It’s like moving into a new house and you’re figuring out how to be in that new house and what to do with it — how to best serve your needs,” Osborne said. The pastor is now settled into to his new office, which seems large and airy, compared to the musty office he used to occupy in the basement without a single beam of natural light. “You can smell the must, and the furnace room was right next door,” Osborne said of his original office. When asked about the new office, he added, “It’s delightful. It’s nice to have a space that I can feel comfortable being in.” He put in some time at the church, but before he moved into his new office, he spent more time working from home. Osborne said the complete renovation cost a little under $1 million, and the majority of the tab has already been paid. Osborne is particularly happy with the way the new parts of the building blend with the older parts. “The cool thing about

Tuesday evening from 6:45-9:15 at the Wylie-Mitchell building. Join any Tuesday from September to December by joining us at the The St. Giles Anglican Church in Estevan received a facelift. With construction complete the renovations to the old Estevan church have been well received by local parishioners. this is that you have the old church, it’s almost 100 years old, and you’ve got this new part added to it and it blends in,” said Osborne. “You’ve got the new with the old. It’s more than just the building. It’s sort of like a symbol for what we’re trying to do with the church, trying to bring the church into the 21st century.” The church is now even more accessible for those in wheelchairs or those who have trouble walking up stairs, with a new lift that will take people up or down to different floors. The new bathrooms also have access for people with disabilities, as well as infant changing tables. The first difference to be noted is in the front foyer, which used to be much more closed off. Osborne said it’s now a place where a large group can mingle and socialize. The space is also im-

portant for funerals, added Osborne, who said in a typical Anglican funeral the casket is brought in and out of the church. Where before turning a corner was tricky, there is a lot of space for one now. “Turning at the top of the stairs was sometimes kind of tricky, but now there’s a lot of room,” he said. With a new spacious kitchen in the basement the fall fowl supper coming later in September, will be a good way to break in the new facility. The stained glass windows have been sealed up on the south wall of the church, as it’s no longer an exterior wall as the new offices are set up on the outside now. Two stained glass windows at the front of the church, and a pair of lights can be turned on to make sure the windows pop with faux sunlight. The church also has a couple of windows adopted

from the former Anglican Church in Bienfait, which closed a few years ago. They have taken up residence in the new office space at St. Giles. A stained glass window from the Bienfait church has also been placed in the new front foyer. After enjoying the new renovations for the last half of the summer, Osborne said the church’s regulars are very happy with the changes. “They love the building. They love being able to come in through the big doors,” said Osborne about his parishioners thoughts on the new construction. There are still some finishing touches to complete the finer points. Some exterior lights still need to be installed, but the doors are open, the kitchen is ready to prepare meals, or even just coffee, something Osborne said was a problem at times when the water was shut off.

As the Saskatchewan Roughriders are winning with nothing to suggest their momentum might slow, it might be sacrilege to speak of non-Rider related football in this part of the world. Well, for all you non-Rider fans out there, there is other football being played right now. The NFL season opened Thursday night and with that, fantasy football leagues across North America have begun. We all love games. We love competition. Watching football just isn’t enough to keep our competitive juices boiling at a sustainable rate. It’s not enough to watch other people, however more athletically talented they are, competing at a high level. We want to play too. We want the opportunity to win. Cue the creation of fantasy football. Draft day is always fun, and it may be the most important day of any fantasy football season. There’s a little bit that can go right and a lot that can go wrong. If Phillip Rivers is your No. 1 quarterback, something went terribly wrong. Most fantasy football players will go in with an idea of who they want on their team while keeping in mind which players are likely to be available for picking

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers when it’s their turn to select. We all want Adrian Peterson, Drew Brees and Calvin Johnson, but that might definitely be an unreasonable expectation. Instead of drafting the top 16 to 20 players in the league and expecting everyone else to just take what’s left, you have to plan your selections. What everyone is trying to select is a team full of over-achievers. Players are selected based on previous years’ performances and everyone hopes during the coming year that their players out-perform their previous marks. We all like to think we’re smart when picking players. It’s easy to delude yourself and convince yourself to select someone ranked lower than another player. I picked Steven Jackson as my No. 1 running back. Now playing in Atlanta with the explosive Falcons offence, I am convinced his numbers are going to

balloon after being the only shiny spoon in the St. Louis Rams’ offensive cutlery drawer for years. I passed over a number of other RBs to take Jackson. Yep, I passed on Doug Martin, Trent Richardson and C.J. Spiller to take Steven Jackson, who is ranked below those three and others who were available for selection. Whatever. I talked myself into believing those guys would all have unproductive or underachieving seasons while Jackson, a wily veteran, is going to turn over a new leaf with a new team that barely even needs a running game with all of the passing options at its disposal. A fantasy football league can be uber competitive, or it can be very relaxed and just for fun. But really there is no such thing as a just-for-fun league. Once the season starts and the matchups are set, everyone wants to beat his buddies. In the end, fantasy football is about smack talk and bragging rights. Sure, there’s a little money on the line, but that isn’t as fulfilling of a prize as the right to hold a victory over your friends’ heads until next year. It’s a long off-season, so it’s vital to have something like the title of league champion to add to your business cards.

Food security is about trust in the system It seems of late I am constantly running into stories that have an element of food security to them, or at least revolve around people becoming more interested in taking back some control of their own food. There was a picture as the Assiniboine Food Security Alliance (AFAS) launched the first of its produce share markets in Yorkton. Then there was a poster of a ranch selling grass-fed bison, beef, and pork, and free range chicken. Pop forward a few days and I am interviewing a local woman who is passing on the knowledge needed to make kefir and kombucha, fermented drinks high in probiotics, a current health food interest for many. And then the City of Yorkton holds an open house for feedback on the new community plan being developed in the city. Warren Crossman and Glorianne Kada, both with AFSA were on hand checking out how well the plan deals with the increasing interest in personal food production. All the recent connections had me contemplating the desire a growing number of people seem to be developing

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist in terms of food security. The realization I have come to is that food security is really something based on trust. In one conversation amid the recent ones, was a concern over genetically modified crops, another mentioned growth hormones and drugs in the dairy sector. The comments reflect a trust concern in both cases. And that trust concern extends across two major areas, which are somewhat disconcerting from an agricultural point of view. The first trust issue is with producers. If a consumer has a concern over GMO or hormones it suggests they are also concerned about a producer’s decision to incorporate such things into their production systems. Then there is the issue that government agencies, such as Health Canada

and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, have established safety levels in terms of livestock feed additives, and guidelines for approval of new crop varieties, including those based on genetic modifications. Consumer concerns would also suggest a reduced trust in regulations being sufficient to ensure safe food on the table. The lack of trust regarding government regulatory systems should be expected, since history is spotted with major failures including lead in paint, asbestos insulation, and the drug Thalidomide and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). That such health hazardous products were ever allowed is enough to at least question whether the government might have missed potential health issues with new developments such as GM-created ones. So taking back direct control of food security by buying from known producers, or growing their own, will be an option for some. It is unlikely it will ever be as it once was, where every home had a huge garden, but for some, it is something well-worth pursuing.

Irish group bringing the thunder to southeast Estevan will get a taste of the Irish when Celtic Thunder stops in the Energy City on their fall tour. Emmet Cahill is part of Celtic Thunder, a group of Irish, and one Scottish, singers who will be performing in Estevan on Sept. 17 at Spectra Place. Cahill will be joined on stage with fellow bandmates Ryan Kelly, Colm Keegan, Neil Byrne, Keith Harkin and George Donaldson, the lone Scot from Glasgow. Cahill spoke with The Southeast Trader Express from Dublin last week prior to the group’s arrival in Vancouver on Monday as they begin the tour on Sept. 7 to promote the group’s latest effort, Mythology, released earlier this year. Cahill, 22, is from Mullingar in Country Westmeath in Ireland and has been performing with Celtic Thunder for two and a half years. While he has enjoyed his time with the group, he said his career trajectory wasn’t originally going to take him down this path. “It has been an amazing experience for me. I was in

a very different path. I was headed toward an opera career before this madness took me away and brought me half way around the world,” he said. “It’s been probably the best three years of my life. I’m just delighted to be part of it, to go out and showcase what I do on the stage as well as with the guys with the group numbers.” This is Cahill’s third time touring in NorthAmerica with Celtic Thunder. “Everyone gets to shine in their solo songs, but we just get on the stage and have fun. It’s like a group of brothers out there having a good time. I think people really get to see that. They see the honesty on the stage and see we’re just ourselves,” said Cahill. “The shows are very carefully constructed because we have our solo songs that reflect who we are as individual singers. We’re all very different. George kind of sings the older folky songs.” Donaldson is the oldest member, at 43, while Cahill is the youngest. Cahill has come in as the classic crossover singer who handles some of

the big anthems, while Kelly practises his craft with some of the more dramatic numbers. “We all have our own styles, but we have to be very versatile, because you can literally go from a rock song, like The Boys Are Back in Town, to Danny Boy, and you have to be able to go from one style completely to another. That’s what keeps it interesting with Celtic Thunder.” There was a lot of preparation before departing for the tour, which runs from Sept. 7 to Dec. 2 with stops in 13 Canadian and 46 U.S. cities. “Once we get it going, the wheel turns every night and the show rolls in and rolls out. For 62 cities from now until Christmas, it’s going to be quite a busy schedule. I’m looking forward to getting out and getting performing again. “Things are so hectic that you don’t get much time to think. It’s all go, and this show that we’re doing, Mythology, we recorded it this time last

year. We sort of had to forget about it and do a completely different tour last year. We’re reminding ourselves of what we were doing when we were shooting the DVD.” After they shot Mythology and recorded all the tracks last year they toured using a different set list rather than performing the new material. “You guys in Canada will be the first people to see

Celtic Thunder this new stuff. We’re really excited about that. The fans are really appreciative of that. It’s exciting to finally get to perform this new show. We’ve been wanting to get this show out there for so long, it’s great that it’s finally here.” He said this show will be very different compared with much of the Celtic Thunder of the past. “I feel that the music

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

Navy to conduct reviews after training exercise National TORONTO - Union members flooded the streets of Toronto in a spirited Labour Day celebration emboldened by the birth of the country’s biggest union for private-sector workers. Thousands of workers stretched for more than 12 blocks Monday in a parade peppered with steel drum bands and labour flags and banners from more than a dozen unions. Front and centre in their red union Tshirts were members of Canada’s newest labour group, Unifor, formed this weekend from a merger between the Canadian Auto Workers and Communication, Energy and Paperworkers unions. Unifor national president Jerry Dias called the boisterous march a symbolic start for the group as it launches an ambitious campaign to draw in members from precarious and traditionally non-union jobs. “Today is really about opportunity, it’s about hope. It’s about us saying we’ve had it and it’s about us saying we’re determined to change the direction of the country,” said Dias. Union membership has declined in recent years, though it saw a slight uptick to 31.5 per cent last year, according to Statistics Canada. The public sector makes up the vast majority of union employees. *** ESQUIMALT, B.C. - The Royal Canadian Navy says it will conduct two separate reviews as it attempts to determine why a routine training exercise between two warships on the Pacific went “dramatically wrong,” as well as to assess the extent of the damage and the impact the incident will have on its operations. HMCS Algonquin and HMCS Protecteur collided Friday afternoon during a towing exercise they were conducting while en route to Hawaii, the navy said. Algonquin bore the brunt of the damage, with photos showing a large gash in the hangar along the port, or left, side of the ship.

Protecteur fared better, but was also damaged on its front end. Commodore Bob Auchterlonie, the commander of the navy’s Pacific fleet, said the ships were conducting a towing exercise in which Algonquin was to tow Protecteur. “To be very upfront and candid, something went dramatically wrong, and that’s a bit of an understatement,” Auchterlonie said in an interview Saturday. “The ships were conducting a towing exercise, which was a normal part of our routine operations and normal business at sea. ... There is an inherent risk of ships operating together at sea in close proximity, but this sort of incident, I’ve not come across in my career.” The vessels each had more than 300 crew members on board, said Auchterlonie, though no injuries were reported. *** OTTAWA - Canadian troops will begin a phased withdrawal from Afghanistan next month, leaving fewer than 100 soldiers on the ground by the time the training mission officially comes to end in March. But questions remain about whether the Afghan force Canadians have been training will be capable of fending off the continued onslaught of insurgents. Maj.-Gen. Dean Milner, who’s in charge of Canadian troops and is deputy commander of the NATO training mission, expressed confidence the Afghan National Army and police will be able to meet the challenges. “The Afghans, as you know, are 100 per cent in the lead. So there’s no doubt in my mind they’re taking more casualties,” he said in a conference call from Kabul. Despite that, he said, there is “nothing that is precluding them from defeating the Taliban.” But U.S. Gen. Joseph Dunford, Milner’s boss and the NATO commander in Afghanistan, said in a recent interview with the British media he believes Afghan forces are suffering an “unsustainable” level of casualties and that the fledgling army might

need western help for another five years. Milner says trainers have been working to mitigate the threats against Afghan troops by providing more extensive training for avoiding and diffusing roadside bombs and booby traps. “The Afghans are putting a big focus on that,” he said. “Their confidence is growing.” Canadian troops, who fought a five-year counter-insurgency war in southern Afghanistan, have been training Afghan military instructors and providing basic literacy courses at camps around Kabul, and in the northern part of the country, since the summer of 2011. Milner said he visits Kandahar frequently and the region is now more stable. International WASHINGTON - Secretary of State John Kerry says the debate about military strikes against Syria is not about President Barack Obama’s “red line” that weapons of mass destruction cannot be tolerated. Instead, Kerry told Congress Tuesday that “this debate is about the world’s red line.” He says it is “a red line that anyone with a conscience ought to draw.” Kerry, Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey were dispatched to the Senate to help persuade lawmakers to support a resolution authorizing limited military strikes against Syria following a chemical weapons attack last month outside Damascus that left hundreds dead, including many children. Kerry said “This is not the time for armchair isolationism. This is not the time to be spectators to slaughter.” *** STOCKHOLM - Swedish police opened an investigation Tuesday after

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange urged them to find out what happened to a suitcase he suspects was stolen from him in 2010 by intelligence agents as he travelled from Sweden to Germany. The suitcase contained three laptops that had WikiLeaks materials, including evidence of a “war crime” allegedly committed by U.S. troops in Afghanistan, according to an affidavit that Assange’s lawyer filed along with a criminal complaint to police at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport. In the affidavit, Assange suggested his bag may have been illegally seized “as part of an intelligence operation with the purpose of gathering information about me.” He offered no proof but said all attempts to locate the bag had failed. The move comes a day before President Barack Obama visits Sweden. “The suspected seizure or theft occurred at a time of intense attempts by the U.S. to stop WikiLeaks’ publications of 2010,” Assange said and suggested that Swedish authorities “seek explanations” from members of Obama’s delegation during their visit. The police border control division at Arlanda Airport opened an investigation as a matter of course after receiving the complaint Tuesday, spokeswoman Jessica Fremnell said. She declined to comment on Assange’s suggestion to interrogate people in Obama’s entourage, saying “we make our own decisions about what we think we need to do.” Assange’s lawyer, Per Samuelson, told the AP that airport personnel in Berlin and Stockholm had not been able to locate the bag and could not explain how it got lost as Assange travelled to Berlin on Sept. 27, 2010.

Raonic leads Canadian group in Davis Cup National Canada’s Davis Cup team is deep in talent. That depth will be needed to beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Serbia on their home court in Belgrade. Milos Raonic leads Canada into the World Group semifinal tie Sept. 13-15 on clay at the Belgrade Arena. The winning country moves onto the final in November against the winner of the other semifinal between Argentina and Czech Republic. Canada has never made it this far in the international men’s team tennis event that begins each year with 130 countries. Only 16 qualify for the World Group each year. Each tie consists of four singles matches and a doubles match. “As a group we’ve gone through events and moments that are pretty uplifting and it’s been a year where we’ve done a lot of things we’ve never done before and we want to continue to do that,” Canada’s captain Martin Larendeau said Tuesday during a conference call. “We’re really looking forward to the challenge

and the chance to keep alive this great story we’re going through.” Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., is the highestranked male singles player in Canadian history at No. 11 in the world. He reached his first Masters final at last month’s Rogers Cup in Montreal where he lost in straight sets to current world No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain. *** EDMONTON - Edmonton Eskimos general manager Ed Hervey lit into his 1-8 football team Tuesday, and announced he has reached past his coaching staff to indefinitely bench underperforming offensive lineman Simeon Rottier. Hervey told reporters he will not longer sit quietly by and watch star quarterback Mike Reilly get slammed, drilled, hammered, and rag-dolled after every throw. “I’m done watching it,” Hervey told a news conference at Commonwealth Stadium, a day after Reilly was sacked seven times in the team’s 37-34 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. “I’ve had enough.” Hervey said he met

with head coach Kavis Reed after the game to discuss the changes, which include a new play-caller on offence, but when asked about Rottier said, “There was no room for negotiation on this one. “Our football team is going to rest on the shoulders of how healthy and how much success Mike Reilly has. We have to protect him to give ourselves a chance. “Our offensive line needs to improve and needs to improve fast,” he said, adding that changes are coming to the line. He said while linemen like Matt O’Donnell, Alexander Krausnick, and Thaddeus Coleman a have shown promise, he has lost patience with Rottier. International LONDON - The world’s richest football league is getting even richer, although the wealth of English clubs is also benefiting teams overseas. In less than three months during the European transfer window, more than $2.3 billion was spent by clubs in the continent’s top five leagues — with a third of that shipped

by Premier League sides overseas, according to an analysis by accountancy firm Deloitte. Such spending might seem at odds with the economic hardships being experienced by many fans, but the transfer window splurges are not slowing down. Even though there are relatively new Financial Fair Play regulations in European football, the days of the big-money moves are not over. “If a price of a player is high or not high, I think this is the market and we cannot intervene in this market,” FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Tuesday. “It is definitely a European market.” In less than three months, 490 million pounds ($760 million) of the 630 million pounds ($980 million) paid out by English sides landed in bank accounts abroad — up 60 per cent year-on-year. The record spending spree, though, was in part the result of Tottenham generating 100 million euros ($132 million) by selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in a world-record deal.

*** ZURICH - FIFA President Sepp Blatter hopes to have a solution by the end of the year to the problem of Israeli security restrictions affecting Palestinian football, after holding talks with the two sides on Tuesday. Blatter said after hosting the leaders of the Israeli and Palestinian football associations that they agreed to send delegates to a follow-up meeting this month to specify an “inventory” of problems between them. The main issue is restricted movement into and out of the West Bank

and Gaza for players and officials from Palestinian and visiting teams. “As I am an optimist, at the end of the year we will have found a solution and will present the solution to the political authorities,” said Blatter, who was told in July by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that national security was his country’s top priority. “Security means also that there shall be solutions that people can come in and go out because Palestine has the right to play in FIFA competitions or Asian competitions,” Blatter said.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013

Postcards don’t make a great retirement plan Q: I have in my possession numerous postcards from the amusement area of Coney Island, mostly from at least 50 years ago. Other cards in my collection include images of Hitler with comic expressions. I am wondering if they are worth anything. -- Thomas, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: Most postcards sell in

the $1 to $3 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions. Seasonal postcards from the turn of the past century, comic cards, real photo images of small towns, and ones with political themes are especially popular with collectors. Show your cards to dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. One of the better publication for collectors is Barr’s Post Card News, 108 E. 5th Street, P.O. Box 720, Vinton, IA 52349; and www. BarrsPCN.com.

*** Q: I have a set of Franciscan dinnerware made by Johnson Brothers in England. Does it have any value? -Robert, Seattle A: First, a little background about this pattern. The design was trademarked by Gladding McBean and Company in 1975. The first hand-decorated lines of dinnerware were introduced in 1937, and by 1940, more than 15 patterns had been marketed. Two of the most popular are Coronado, a

falo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo., thinks it is rare. How can I find out its value? -- Gordon, Casper, Wyo. A: The key word in your question is reproduction. A reproduction is never worth as much as the original. With that said, the time has come for you to consult with experts. Two of the better auction houses are Christie’s, 20 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020; and Sotherby’s, 1334 York Ave., New York, NY 10021. You might want to contact the

favorite with collectors, and El Patio from 1934. Apple (1940), Desert Rose (1941) and Ivy (1948) are among the most popular patterns. Typical prices for El Patio include a cereal bowl, $12; a dinner plate, $15; and a sugar bowl, $20. Handpainted embossed earthenware commands slightly higher prices. *** Q: I have a reproduction of a Charles Russell painting, maybe the only one in existence. The curator at the Buf-

professionals at both for their opinions about your Charles Russell picture. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions.
