Putting an end to the stigma Talking about the issue is the best way to erase a lot of the misconception surrounding mental illness. The #BellLetsTalk campaign, which emerged in 2010, is dedicated to the promotion and support of mental health across Canada. Since then, the online campaign has grown considerably and has allowed people to talk openly about mental illness. Though some may never experience mental illness first-hand, it is highly possible they will know someone who does. Since 2010, several additional research and resources have flourished in support of mental illness, while positive steps forward have been taken towards an overall culture change towards mental health across the country.
Services in southeast Saskatchewan There are a number of services available in the southern corner of the province when it comes to treating mental health issues. Services are available on a full-time basis at the clinics in Weyburn and Estevan. From rehabilitation and consultation services, to addiction and youth services, the Sun Country Health Region has a wide range of tools that can be accessed for by anyone requiring help.
Facts regarding mental mental illnesses: - One in five people experience a form of mental illness at some point. - Approximately 8% of adults will experience major depression at some time in their lives. - Almost one half (49%) of those who feel they have suffered from depression or anxiety have never gone to see a doctor about this problem. - Suicide accounts for 24% of all deaths among 15-24 year olds and 16% among 2544 year olds - The economic cost of mental illnesses in Canada for the health care system was estimated to be at least $7.9 billion in 1998 – $4.7 billion in care, and $3.2 billion in disability and early death.

The human body is capable of incredible things. Beyond the regular, everyday feats it performs, like breathing and pumping blood through our veins – did you know that your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood through your body every day? – the human species has shown time and time again that when channeled toward a specific task, it can do the unthinkable. It can run 100 metres in less than 9.5 seconds, it can clear a bar sitting nearly eight feet off the ground and it can win seven consecutive Tour de France races. Sigh, that last one, of course, was done with the help of performance enhancers. Despite the fact that the cheating tarnished Armstrong’s image, and career for that matter, I still find the seven consecutive wins fascinating; absolutely fascinating. Don’t get me wrong, cheating is unacceptable and using drugs in a race where the other competitors are pushing their bodies’ to the limit as a result of intense training and proper nutrition is unfair on every level.
So let’s have a league where those advantages deemed unfair in regular events are allowed. We already try and squeeze in every type of permissible advantage into sports from special shoes to outfits, why not go all the way and just enhance the body itself? I’m serious. Let’s see what the human body can do with a little extra help. Don’t allow users to compete with athletes who go natural, but I would pay big money – if I had big money – to see a sprinter run 100 metres in less than nine seconds. Imagine how that would look. That sprinter’s acceleration would be cartoon-like. I want that to exist. Research has shown that at top speed, every runner takes around a third of a second to pick their foot up and put it down again, meaning at top speed, your grandmother is repositioning her foot at the same speed as world-record holder Usain Bolt. With that little extra “boost”, there is the potential for that foot speed to in-

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling crease and perhaps then, we could see that race clocked at less than nine seconds. As you can tell, I’m fascinated by track and field events and I love seeing records broken in running events. I don’t want records crushed by athletes who use performance enhancers and race in the Olympics, but that’s why I’m emphasizing the idea of an Olympics-type event where those advantages are allowed. It would have to be administered carefully and monitored to an extent, we don’t want people overdosing and causing themselves serious harm, but with some care and additional research into the actual performance enhancers, the possibilities are thrilling to consider. Every sporting event would enter a new level of intensity never before seen. Yes, there is the risk of viewers tuning out of
Excerpt from You Might be from Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. the regular sports we have today and crowding around the TV to watch two cyborgs trading bone-breaking blows in MMA, but I’m just being selfish and assuming that athletes who refuse to participate in any form of enhancement find another enjoyable career. I frown on dopers tampering with the beautiful
sporting world we have today - filled with horrible calls, brawls and deflated balls - but I do think there is a special place for them, isolated from the rest. It’s hard to imagine a scenario like the one I’m describing not becoming a reality in the distant future, I just wish I would be around to see it. Don’t you?
Taking matters into own hands It was interesting to sit down with Dean Rugland, manager of the Yorkton Peavey Mart and talk about how the company is trying to focus on small farmers, acreage owners, and the growing realm of urban farmers. The world of food is becoming one that, while I am not personally worried when I walk into a grocery store, I can appreciate those who are starting to wonder just what we are consuming. Pick up anything that is processed and read the ingredient label, and unless you have a degree in chemical engineering, you might as well try to decipher something written in Martian. The idea of bacon that can sit on a shelf and then be mirowaved in mere seconds is at least somewhat disquieting if you think about it. And one has to at least be aware of growth hormones and insecticide residues and a host of other potential issues with food if any link in the chain from the farm to the table is broken, or the safety measures lessened. The alternative is to take greater control of our own food. Most are simply consumers now, and they will not change. It is like darning a pair of socks, once it was common practice. Now a sock with a hole in it is destined for the landfill, while the wearer heads to a department store to buy a new pair. I appreciate the cost is often less to buy new, especially if you assign any value at all to your time, but still it is a reality which feeds commercialism. However, back to taking control of food security. In small cities and towns we might question just how much control we can have, but the abil-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ity to control what we put on the table should be more at hand than we realize. To start with most backyards can be good gardens. Many may have turned that space over to grass and a gazebo as an outdoor living space, but that is as they say, a choice. A backyard should also have the potential be a place, which produces more than vegetables. In this space before I have suggested urban egg production should be allowed. Most major cities have moved in that direction. Edmonton is among those currently undertaking a test run to make sure they have the right regulations in place. There are now enough urban municipalities allowing urban laying hens that cloning a workable bylaw should be simple. In cases where requests for urban layers have met resistance from Council it can only be seen as shortsighted reactions by the Councils involved. The backyard should also be a place for honeybees. Again, many urban communities are allowing hives, with rules of course, like a fence to keep the curious and the vandals away. Honey bees are less an issue if you stay away from their hives than wasps and hornets,
so again, if the bylaw is done right, they can be safely raised. I did mention this in passing to friends who were immediately concerned if a hive went in the yard neighbouring someone allergic to bees. It was a concern but one I’m not sure you can take too far. Does a farmer with bees in a clover field need to check with every farmyard within a mile or two to see if someone there is allergic? Do we ask people on our city block if they have cynophobia before buying a Doberman Pinscher? Cynophobia is a fear of dogs. And ultimately, are bees buzzing into a yard where there are no flowers, since I would suspect people with bee allergies do not grow something which attract bees. There are wild bees, bumblebees and such to worry about naturally in any community. Now no one is going to suggest a milk cow, well some might, but common sense makes that request unreasonable. The size, noise and waste from a cow are more than is reasonable for a backyard. Three or four laying hens, a doe rabbit and litter for the deep freeze, or a hive of bees do not raise the same concerns, provided of course there are regulations in place. While there will always be those with concerns, a larger community concern should be allowing people the best options for looking after the basic need for safe food. Hopefully, over time more urban municipalities will establish such regulations, and more people will have a chance to take back at least some level of control in terms of their own food.

As the next provincial election comes closer, I ask for your support as the Saskatchewan NDP candidate for Estevan and area. I grew up in Saskatoon even though the family farm was located at Rocky Mountain House. I attended Mount Royal Collegiate and later the University of Saskatchewan. Through my work in Estevan over the past decade in the oilfield I have had the privilege of meeting many different people with many vibrant views. During this time I have developed a bright vision for our riding and our province. I left the oilfield after over a decade of dedication in order to help raise our young family. I acquired a union job for the first time in my life which gave me an understanding of the power of a unionized group.

Wedding after party planning pointers
Nowadays, many wedding guests are not ready to call it a night after the deejay plays the last dance at the reception. After parties have grown increasingly popular, but planning an after party is not necessarily as simple as pointing guests to a nearby watering hole. After parties can be anything a couple wants them to be. They can be a bunch of friends toasting marshmallows over a fire pit or a night of dancing at a club. But it pays for couples to heed a few after party pointers. · Choose a place within walking distance or close by to the reception hall or hotel. Guests have likely been indulging in alcohol
during the wedding, and safety should always be a priority. If only a few people are going out, you may be able to pile into a cab, but if your affair will be attended by more than a handful of guests, choose a venue close by so it’s easy for guests to get there and get home. · Limit the food and drink choices. Ask servers to bring a few pitchers of beer or sangria and finger foods. This will help avoid disagreements over trying to tally up and split the bill afterward. · Go comfortably. If you’re ready to get out of wedding finery, by all means change into something more comfortable. You probably will enjoy
yourself more at the after party if you can mingle in more comfortable attire. · Take advantage of hotel services. Many hotels have conference rooms or attached bars and restaurants that make perfect gathering places for an after party. Make arrangements with the hotel concierge or the front desk in advance. · Delegate responsibilities. A busy bride and groom may not have the time or the inclination to plan another party. If guests want to continue celebrating, put the task in the hands of a third party or volunteer. · Leave whenever you want. Partygoers will eventually need some sleep. Feel free to leave the after party whenever you want.
Usually once a few people begin to disperse, the rest of the group will call it a night.
After parties are growing in popularity. Those planning on celebrating
into the early hours of the morning can start thinking creatively.

A couple’s honeymoon is their first real chance to relax and unwind after the hustle and bustle of wedding planning. Couples who want to make sure their first getaway as husband and wife goes off without a hitch might want to heed the following advice. 1. Start saving early. Honeymoons are expensive, so to afford the vacation of your dreams it’s wise to begin saving for the honeymoon as early as possible. It may be well worth it to compromise and make sacrifices in other areas to ensure you have enough funds for your dream honeymoon getaway. Do not expect cash gifts at your wedding to pay for your trip. If you do, you may be sorely disappointed when the time comes to take off. 2. Read online reviews. Online reviews can paint an accurate picture of a potential honeymoon destination. Look at vacationer-supplied photographs to see how the accommodations match up to the resort’s own marketing materials. You don’t want too many surprises, such as service fees, dirty rooms or a lack of beach amenities, to ruin your trip. 3. Plan at least one exciting outing. While on your honeymoon, be sure to go on at least one adventure. Try an activity you have never done before, such as snorkeling, traveling a zip line or swimming with stingrays. 4. Pack early. After a long wedding day and reception spent dancing into the wee hours of the morning, you probably do not want to spend time packing. Pack your suitcases and travel essentials in advance of your wedding day so you have more time to sleep in before you depart for the airport. Also, remember not to over-pack. You want to have room for the souvenirs you purchase along the way. 5. Enjoy your surroundings. Put down the smartphone or tablet enough to truly enjoy your surroundings. A honeymoon is an opportunity to relax, and that may not be possible if you’re tied to your devices. Friends at home can wait for your status updates and wedding pictures. 6. Splurge on something expensive. Whether it’s an ultra-fancy dinner or an ex• Gift Registry • Bridal Party Gifts otic souvenir, indulge. • Champagne Flutes • Cake Toppers 7. “It’s always been tough to ship items up north,” she said. “People are getting very creative and now some are sending it to certain reliable individuals who then ensure the packages get to where they need to go.” Ann noted anyone who wants to make a cash donation, or a donation of any sort can contact her through the chapter’s Facebook page or e-mail her directly. “I’ll make sure it gets there,” she said. Families or certain individuals from northern communities can be sponsored, allowing sponsors to monitor their progress and ensure the care packages arrive at specific locations. “I’ve personally asked for a family, and sometimes I just ask them ‘what exactly do you need?’” The main HONN group on Facebook has nearly 12,000 members and has grown exponentially in just a few months. In less than a week, the Saskatchewan chapter, which is overseen by Megan Clarke out of Regina, has already amassed 250 members. The group’s next step is to obtain a charitable organization status. Drop off points will be established in Estevan and Carlyle, until then, anyone interested in donating can email Ann at poierk@ yahoo.com or call her at 306-471-8060.
