Cheers & Jeers THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 24, 2015

Cheers to the lady who offered me her shopping cart when she saw I had my arms full. Her random act of kindness really brightened my day!

Jeers to people who think they can rearrange a planned event. Perhaps those people should have organized the event in the first place.

Cheers to the staff at the library for all their work in organizing Donkey Days with all the activities and treats.

Jeers to drivers who cut pedestrians off when they’re trying to cross at an intersection. I see it happen way too often.

Cheers to the person who used his right turn signal correctly, letting me know he wanted to turn in so I could exit the parking lot and enter the road. Signaling appears to be a lost art in this city.

Wall still doesn’t get it, but neither do other premiers It was no surprise that Premier Brad Wall became the mouthpiece for the fossil fuel industry at last week’s provincial premiers’ annual summer conference, held in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Canadian Energy Strategy that was unveiled at the meeting was nearly missing one signature, and that was Wall’s. He didn’t like the fact that oil and gas wasn’t getting enough attention. Again, no surprise. What is surprising, however, was the absence of actual stated targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and goals in transitioning to renewables. According to various news outlets, these targets and plans of action were expunged from the final version of the plan, despite the fact they were advocated in a draft of the document. It’s admirable that our provincial leaders are finally on the same page when it comes acknowledg-

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling ing climate change (except for Brad Wall) but it’s clear that we have a long way to go. I hope aggressive talks regarding a shift to renewables continue, but we have to start setting actual targets that all premiers can agree to hit. Only Ontario and Quebec have successfully lowered greenhouse gas emissions since 1990. Saskatchewan on the other hand? Well, we’re still puffing away, like the mighty tobacco industry, as the National Observer put it, that likely supported a bevy of physical activities and scientific research back in the day until we realized that tobacco is an addictive drug that kills thousands,

and the clever advertising that often adhered to the younger crowd was even more toxic than the smoke being inhaled. It’s no secret the oil and gas industry makes money. It’s a foundation for our economy, not only in Saskatchewan, but across the country. But to rely so strongly on that argument, and in Wall’s case, become angry at the fact that fossil fuel’s are finally regarded by the majority as the reason greenhouse gas emissions are so high, is laughable. It’s unrealistic to suggest we drop the oil and gas industry and shift our attention to other means of energy generation right now.

We must create an energy portfolio that all provinces can meet, and would likely contain a balanced mix of fossil fuels, renewables like wind and solar, biomass and perhaps even geothermal. Carbon capture technology could be put to great use here, and wouldn’t seem like such a risk if other means of energy generation were being heavily invested in as well. People in the oil and gas industry would have their jobs, but with so many people in that industry on the verge of retirement, a transition phase would be inevitable, which would provide a great opportunity for new doors to open for a new wave of energy sector workers who could dabble with alternate means of energy generation. As technology develops over time, fossil fuels would be phased out, which would rapidly decrease our carbon emissions. None of this would be easy. But we can’t put keep

fossil fuels on life support forever. We have to pull the plug eventually. The bottom line is, Saskatchewan contains only one per cent of the country’s population, but produces a disproportionate 10 per cent of national emissions. We contribute greatly to climate change, and the effects of it have been felt here at home. Extreme flooding and forest fires are the results, and if we don’t change our ways, things will only get worse. Other countries have much more devastating levels of greenhouse gas emissions, but that doesn’t mean we should point fingers and say ‘but they’re way worse than we are.’ The money the oil and gas industry produces is much appreciated. But with some dedication and actual investment, those same numbers can be attained by other means, and we wouldn’t have to worry about literally killing ourselves in the process.

Diversity not common among crops When you live on the Canadian Prairies you tend to have a rather narrow view of what agriculture means here. Alberta is thought of as the land of ranches and cattle. Saskatchewan still holds onto the idea of being the breadbasket of the world because of wheat. And so on it has gone through the years. Granted there has been some notable changes, canola blooming in fields across the entire Prairies being the prime example, but still the general view we have of what farmers here can, and do produce, is hardly as diverse as the reality of things. Obviously farmers here can grow far more than wheat, canola and cattle, the problem is getting consumers here to make the extra effort to find what is available locally. Certainly, there is growing interest in eating food produced closer to the kitchen table. “The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating (or Plenty: One Man, One Woman, and a Raucous Year of Eating Locally) is a nonfiction book written by Canadian writers Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon. In the book, the authors recount their experiences, including motivations and challenges, on restricting their diet, for one year, to include only foods grown within 100 miles of their residence. Beginning in March 2005, with little preparation the urban couple began only purchasing foods with ingredients they knew were all from within 100 miles. Finding little in grocery stores, they relied on farmers’ markets and visits to local farms,” detailed Wikipedia. The idea of the so-called 100-mile diet has

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist caught on with some, primarily as a way to better ensure knowledge of what they are eating. Building a relationship with market gardeners, u-pick fruit farms, and area livestock producers certainly enhances a better of understanding of the food we eat. To help identify what is actually available in Saskatchewan at least, Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan held a celebration of Saskatchewan-grown food at A Taste of Saskatchewan July 14-19, in Saskatoon. “In conjunction with this event, Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan has launched #loveSASKfood to encourage foodies to show their appreciation for home-grown food by tweeting or posting pictures to Instagram,” detailed a release on the event. A new website, loveSASKfood.org has also been created as a resource for consumers. On the site, you will find delicious recipes, profiles and videos of real Saskatchewan farmers, as well as information on upcoming food-related events. “We’re proud of the quality food that we produce in Saskatchewan,” stated Adele Buettner, CEO of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan in the release. “From beef to chicken, eggs, pork, milk, wheat, canola, pulses, barley, flax

and much, much more, Saskatchewan farmers are diligent in their efforts to produce the best possible foods for consumers to eat. What farmers grow in Saskatchewan is exported all over the world. #loveSASKfood is our way of inviting consumers to engage in conversations about food and farming in Saskatchewan - and celebrate the incredible array of food produced right here at home.” It is an intriguing experience when you take some time to search out what is available in the province, and across the Prairies. There are small enterprises creating fantastic smoked meats, others creating jams, jellies, syrups and even wines from Prairie-produced fruits, gourmet mustards, and flavoured teas to mention only some. There is little doubt we could all add far more locally-produced food to our weekly food fare, and if demand was there farmers would diversify quickly to meet evolving demands. The issue is consumers and farmers making the connections. Consumers have become increasingly tied to big grocery stores that often do not deal with local producers because they cannot ensure the day-to-day supply big groceries require. That means consumers wanting local food have to look outside the big box store more. Farmers need to find ways to increase their profile too, social media and local advertising of course being important. The bottom line is that Prairie farmers could produce more for our tables if we made eating locally produced food a priority as consumers. It would be a win/win for both.

Canadian pipelines net receipts of crude oil and condensates, and other liquefied petroleum products edged up 0.5 per cent from the same month a year earlier to 31.7 million cubic metres in May. A recent Statistics Canada report showed receipts from refineries and bulk plants rose 8.2 per cent to 4.8 million cubic metres. There were also higher receipts from imports (up 17.9 per cent to 1.3 million cubic metres) and other sources (up 9.2 per cent to 1.3 million cubic metres). These increases were partly offset by lower receipts from fields (down 4.6 per cent to 7.9 million

Piping Plovers ready for winter Submitted by Nature Saskatchewan Regina, SK - It may still feel like summer to you and I, but Piping Plovers have already begun to prepare for the winter. “Piping Plovers are small migratory shorebirds that nest in Saskatchewan during the summer months, and spend the winter months on the coastal beaches of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Islands such as Cuba,” said Rebecca Magnus, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator with Nature Saskatchewan. “Piping Plovers will begin

migrating in early August after the young have spent the month of July practicing their flying skills, and growing quickly in preparation for migration,” said Magnus. The Piping Plover is an endangered species, which means that this species could become extirpated from Canada in the future. A total of 775 individual Piping Plovers were counted in Saskatchewan during the 2011 International Piping Plover Breeding Census. Unfortunately, this number is lower than the 1,435 plovers counted in Saskatchewan

cause chicks to become trapped) and can trample nests. Piping Plovers, not to be confused with Killdeer, have a single black neckband, whereas Killdeer have two black neckbands. Piping Plovers are also smaller than Killdeer, and have orange legs rather than the typically dark yellow legs common to Killdeer. Plovers have a lighter grey back than the Killdeer’s brown back, and the Piping Plover’s breast is white. Another distinguishing feature of the Piping Plover is its orange bill that is black tipped.

Nature Saskatchewan has a voluntary land stewardship program for landowners with Piping Plovers on their land. This program, Plovers on Shore, involves a voluntary “handshake” agreement where the landowner agrees to conserve shoreline habitat for these endangered birds. To learn more about the Piping Plover, or if you have Piping Plovers on your shoreline and would be interested in a face-to-face visit and discussion with the Plovers on Shore Coordinator, please contact Nature Saskatchewan at 1-800-667-4668 or (306) 780-9832.

Fall programs at the Southeast Regional College are approaching, and opportunities for students to receive a financial boost are aplenty. In addition to the $6,500 raised for students through the Swing for Scholarships tournament at the end of June, which was matched dollar for dollar by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education’s Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program, resulting in a total of $13,000 going towards student scholarships, Jeff Richards, vice president of strategic development said students at the Estevan campus will be receiving slightly more than the funds raised through the golf tournament. “We raised more across the whole college,” Richards said, noting the approximately $16,000 in scholarship funds were raised by the end of the college’s fiscal year on June 30. On the heels of Estevan’s successful golf tournament

fundraiser, Richard also said students accepted for fall programs automatically receive a $1,000 scholarship applied to their tuition. “We believe in our students and we want them to be successful,” he said, adding there are three full-time programs in Estevan that are eligible for the entrance scholarships. The college’s reflection of the various industries’ labour market demand is top priority, Richards said, and that hasn’t changed heading into the fall programming. “That is our claim to fame,” he said. “Some of the other institutions can’t be that nimble … we can pick up or drop a program in a very short amount of time based on labour market need.” Power engineering is currently in high demand, Richards noted. Introduced for the first time this fall will be the industrial mechanic/ millwright program.

careful,” she said. Soparlo said people should also be mindful of their dog’s comfort levels with water. “Some are absolutely petrified of water, so making sure your pet is OK with water is a key thing,” she said. Pet flotation devices are available in most super centres, Soparlo said, and pets who are unable to swim should be outfitted with one. A press release from STARS highlighted ways in which people can reduce the risks of drowning: • Never leave children alone near water. And stay

close – always within arms’ reach. Designate an adult to supervise children in or around water. • Have 100% attention when supervising, by putting away distractions like cellphones. • Watch the face – especially the eyes. Many victims don’t call, wave, or signal for help because they can’t keep their head or arms above water. • Young children and non-swimmers should wear a lifejacket. • Check for hazards in and around water, and know your limits. • Never swim alone or while intoxicated.

Boaters and swimmers asked to be cautious on the water By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

Boating enthusiasts are being reminded to follow safe practices while out on the lake during National Drowning Prevention Week, which is from July 19 to 25. Woodlawn Regional Park manager AaronLee Soparlo spoke with the Mercury regarding boating safety, after a story published in the Mercury highlighted an accident at Boundary Dam in late June, which resulted in a sunken boat. “Brochures and booklets are handed out at the

gatehouse for anyone entering with a boat,” Soparlo said, noting additional information can be found on www.tc.gc.ca. “Tons of detail can be found there.” Key information found in the brochures and on the website include how to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card and various safety requirements for navigation lights, signals and flotation devices. According to STARS, Approximately 500 Canadians drow n every year. Twenty-two people drowned in Saskatchewan in 2014. Soparlo noted local conservation officers en-

force these regulations. The park is only able to provide the public with information and safety regulations. “The rules are generally respected by everyone,” Soparlo said, but noted one factor, in particular, is often the cause for problems on the water. “The big one is booze. That’s a huge one,” she said. “We just want to remind people to boat safely, and to make sure there’s a spotter.” She added spotters are important for anyone participating in water-based activities, like wakeboarding and tubing. “Our lakes do get super busy, so you have to be
