THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2015

Cheers to city street sweepers. I see them regularly!

Jeers to people who go flying through school zones. School may be out, but children are playing there all day, everyday. The few seconds you gain by speeding isn’t worth endangering children.

Cheers to Jamie Molyneux and his quick thinking that saved the lives of three boaters in need of assistance. Your actions have taught us all a lesson in genuine kindness to others.

Jeers to homeowners who don’t trim their tree branches that hang low (into people’s faces) over sidewalks.

Cheers to the town of Bienfait and surrounding communities for the memorable events of Canada Day. The breakfast, the parade and evening fire-works were all very well done.

Jeers to laser price scanners at the cashier counters that are pointed directly at customer’s faces. (Some being children)

Cheers to the Tim Hortons on King Street. Their friendly service is always nice to see. Cheers to all of the rescue workers, the military and all of the volunteers helping with the wild fires up north.

Mix business and pleasure this summer A summer job is often associated with making money, and let’s face it, making money is awesome. But a recent interview with the cast of this year’s 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, who were genuinely excited about working at the Souris Valley Theatre for the summer with a charming and enthusiastic group of actors and actresses, made me realize a summer job can be so much more than just a job. It can be, at the very least, a couple of months where you establish meaningful connections with new people and have fun; but at the other end of the spectrum, it can potentially be a lifealtering experience, for the better, of course. I’ve worked in my hometown of Hanover, Ontario for several summers, doing retail and construction, fairly typical summer jobs. I hardly considered them as any-

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling thing beyond an avenue through which I could make some money to go towards my college tuition. It ultimately worked out just fine, and I even made some good memories with a few of the more charismatic personalities who worked in those environments. I greatly appreciate those opportunities, because without them, I wouldn’t be here doing what I enjoy doing for a living. I truly admire, however, the passion some people approach their summer jobs with, and it resonates with the people who surround them. This was most evi-

dent with a friend from Toronto, who went to Ryerson University for journalism. I met him for the first time at a magazine I was interning with. He was a driven young writer who had a great voice, and in a short amount of time, we became good friends. It appeared as though he was destined to write about the technology industry. His heavy interest in gaming and fancy gadgets made it difficult to imagine him in a different scenario. He said so himself. But then all of a sudden, Camp Winston happened. For a summer, he decided to become

a counsellor at a camp dedicated to kids from ages 7-13 who have complex neurological disorders. Disorders like, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessivecompulsive and oppositional defiant disorders. These are children most people don’t want to deal with, but at Camp Winston, they feel at home. They aren’t judged and counsellors allow them to shine in a variety of ways. A teen program for kids from ages 14-17 is available, too. The camp has received more coverage from the mainstream media recently, and it’s because of the tremendous work taking place there. One summer at Camp Wi n s t o n c h a n g e d m y friend’s life. He returned from camp with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. He said the kids’ passion and ability to be who they are, with-

out the restrictions and misconceptions hovering over their heads, nearly brought him to tears. He realized counsellors there were a big part of that, and knowing he was a small part of that positive energy for one summer changed his goals in life entirely. Not all summer jobs are life-altering, but they can be significant in some way. Perhaps you’ll meet a new best friend, the love of your life, or maybe, you’ll encounter a group of amazing people who can make something as mundane as scanning grocery items a blast. Don’t be afraid to approach people, but remain approachable yourself. Sure, some isolate themselves entirely at work and want nothing more than to be left alone. But in my experience, it always feels a little better when you’re having a tiny bit of fun at work, even if it’s work you don’t necessarily like.

Cattle sector going through tough times It isn’t a secret in the agriculture industry that cattle prices have been at historic highs over the past couple of years. One of the driving factors for the high prices has simply been a shortage of beef. The North American cow herd has been squeezed ever smaller by previously softer prices and then drought across a large area of the southern United States. The high prices for feeder cattle has kept pressure on the cow herd as many producers have found better profit in selling replacement heifers to feedlots rather than retaining to grow their herds. When you analyze the current situation it comes down to a market where weather has been the main determining factor. We may not immediately think about weather affecting livestock markets as directly as it does grains, but the availability of feed for stock very much impacts the profitability of any stock sector. And the weather pendulum swings dramatically and quickly. It was only a year ago across large areas of Saskatchewan, and Manitoba that a rain hit in the last days of June, which caused significant flooding. Roads, bridges, culverts were washed

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist away in torrents of water. Areas of communities such as Yorkton and Melville saw significant flooding of basements, such damage coming all too close on the heels of flooding in 2010 from torrential rains then too. From the perspective of 12-months ago the last thought on anyone’s mind was drought. Crops were flooded out in places, and cattleman were working hard at keeping cattle on the move enough to keep ahead of generally lush pastures (at least where it was not drowned out in the low spots). From the perspective of cattle producers, good prices and at least descent feed reserves made it a very good year. Flash forward to now, and cattle producers are antsy. There is a drought acres most of the

Prairies. There are reports coming out of Alberta of some producers already looking to sell-off cattle early as grass pastures are suffering without rain. There is of course some added incentive to sell-off at this point as cattle prices are still pretty good, so a forced sell will not hit the pocketbook as much as it could. Granted there was some rain on July 4, but it will take a lot more than showers to kick start pasture growth, and to ensure a hay crop, which can sustain cow herds through the winter ahead. If the drought that trimmed the southern U.S. cow herd has indeed moved north now, what it will do is sustain the higher prices of the current cattle cycle for longer than may have been anticipated. But the downside will be the fact Canadian producers may not be able to enjoy the high prices as much if they are forced into a sell-off because of a drought. The situation may not yet be dire, but each day without significant rain draws the cattle sector closer to a very difficult year in terms of cattle feed. A year ago we lamented the rains, but now they are most certainly needed, just not to extremes.

INTRODUCING THE 2015

MEDIA VEHICLE OF THE YEAR.

In a recent survey of 2,461 Canadians, newspapers, both print and online, are shown to have the PRVW SRZHUIXO LQÀXHQFH RQ HYHU\ stage of the car buying process.

All of which ought to tell you where newspapers should rank when planning your advertising.

Shown here are two of the prize beef cattle that took part in the livestock parade in front of the packed grandstand at the Estevan Fair on a Friday night. The crowd was massive, filling the bleachers and even requiring additional seating on the race track itself.

Expanded translation service in Sun Country Health Region A new addition to the Sun Country Health Region, in the form of translation and interpretative services, has been implemented. The region has contracted CanTalk, a Canadian translation and interpretation company that promises to deliver assistance in any language within 60 seconds, said Janice Giroux, Sun Country’s vice-president of community health. “It’s not as if we had a big demand for the service … yet,” said Giroux in an interview with the Estevan Mercury, but with a growing population of newcomers who are only comfortable in languages other than English, there was a concern that the region needed to be better prepared for the inevitabile, she suggested. “It began with the Ebola outbreak and what we needed to do and we began to question what we had and what we needed to have,” Giroux added. Access to CanTalk’s 1,200 or more translation service providers is around

the clock through a simple 1-800 number health professionals can access by using a PIN number to check in for use. Giroux noted that the costs are reflected in health region’s budget, and that it will relieve a lot of pressure from both health officials and patients.

The service will be offered at all facilities served by Sun Country. “People no longer need to worry about not being understood. If you come for any kind of health care need, including mental health services, we will find you a language connection,” said Giroux.

Artists and organizations will be able to continue strutting their stuff after an $800,000 investment in Saskatchewan’s cultural sector, some of which will provide renewed funding for the Culture on the Go program. The program is designed to help Saskatchewan artists and organizations tour and present shows. “Culture on the Go benefits Saskatchewan artists and audiences as it promotes cultural activities within Saskatchewan, across Canada and internationally,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said in a press release. “The success of Saskatchewan’s creative industries contributes to our economy and the work of Saskatchewan artists enhances our quality of life.” The funding is divided evenly between Creative Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Creative Saskatchewan will administer grants for commerciallyfocused initiatives such as support for individuals, groups and businesses to attend recognized events where demonstrated market interest has already been identified, established and/or secured. The Arts Board will fund Culture on the Go projects with the aim to provide access to the arts, to build arts appreciation and for audience development. Saskatoon’s Sum Theatre took its original production, My Rabbi, on a four-city international tour with the support of a Culture on the Go grant. “The tour put us on the national and international stage as a company that produces relevant and exciting new Canadian theatre,” play co-writer and actor and Sum Theatre Artistic Director Joel Bernbaum noted. “I’m grateful to the Arts Board for providing this foundational piece of my growth as a theatre artist.” The Culture on the Go program began in 2009. Since its inception, the government has invested more than $5.6 million to support Saskatchewan artists and art organizations.

Bienfait’s pool is now open The Town of Bienfait’s new outdoor swimming pool is now open. The community celebrated the opening of the new facility on Canada Day by hosting a toonie swim. Pool manager Brannden Pastachak said attendance was around 150 people, but they had 110 people in the pool area at their busiest time. The new pool boasts a

zero-depth entry that allows people to walk into the pool, rather than jump into deeper water. There are also play structures for children, a diving board and an area for lane swimming. A number of programs are happening at the new pool. Swimming lessons are being offered twice a day. Public swims and lane swims are also available. Theme days and special

events are planned for later in the year. Pastachak suggested they could have a late night swim, thanks to lights that come on at night. Bienfait had been without a pool since 2011, when their old indoor pool was closed after nearly 40 years of service. The indoor pool was demolished in 2012. Most of the construction for the new outdoor pool happened in 2013 and 2014.

Southeast Newcomer Services, in partnership with Saskatchewan Parks, is offering clients a chance to learn about camping at the Estevan Public Library on July 9. Photo from Flickr Commons.

Experiencing the wilderness first hand By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

Camping isn’t for everyone, but anyone interested in experiencing it for the first time had the opportunity to do so. That is why Newcomers is hosted a Learn to Camp seminar at the Estevan Library on July 9. Another one is scheduled in Weyburn for July 23. Members of Saskatchewan Parks will be on hand at both sessions to spearhead the discussions and go over basic camping requirements. “We thought it would be a nice experience for people who have arrived in Saskatchewan to get taste of camping and see if they like it,” said Newcomers’recently appointed program coordinator, Waed Dakkak. The process won’t stop there. If the interest in camping grows after the information sessions, Dakkak said newcomers will have the opportunity to sign up for an actual camping trip, which will take place free of charge, at one of three participating provincial parks. Details have yet to be finalized, but a halfday, full-day or potentially overnight camping session are on the table. Dakkak said participants who decide camping isn’t an activity they want to pursue could still benefit from visiting the parks, noting their beauty alone is worth the time commitment. Information services advisor Jhaldair Roye, who is another relatively new face at Southeast Newcomer Services, and Dakkak said various community-oriented activities will take place throughout the summer. On July 11, Newcomer

clients will have the opportunity to pick fresh Saskatoon berries from Prairie Toons Orchard in Bienfait and the Taylor Family Farm in Glen Ewen. The berry picking will take place on July 11, in Bienfait and on July 18 in Glen Ewen. An introduction to soccer will also be available onAug. 8 at Cactus Park. Registration is required for both events. Newcomers has also organized an information session on Saskatchewan’s Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), which will take place at the Southeast Regional College onAug. 13. Dakkak noted she is striving to have an event planned every week throughout the summer. “Next year we might try and organize some weeklong camps for children, but because I just arrived, and a lot of our clients don’t have any vacation time available, we’re just planning smaller events that everyone can attend,” Dakkak said. She also encourages people to assist with some of the events, noting anyone who volunteers will benefit greatly from the interaction with a diverse group of people. Above all else, Roye and Dakkak said they hope these activities will lead to more interaction among long-time Estevanites and newcomers. “We want to see more integration between newcomers and people who have lived in the community for a long time,” she said, adding it would be nice to have the two “harmonize” and have everyone’s personal interests combined, resulting in a unique cultural hub in Estevan where both the familiar and the new are welcomed

with open arms. “We don’t want Estevan to be a place where people just pass by,” she said. All members of the community, Dakkak noted, play a big part in how the community is shaped.
