Cheers&Jeers Page 2

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2015

Cheers to the gentlemen who engaged in a friendly conversation with me at the grocery store while we waited in line. He didn’t try and hit on me or do anything creepy. What a breath of fresh air.

Jeers to my neighbor who was trying to be sneaky by coming into my back yard and removing my bird feeders off the tree branch. I was home and watched you do this. How hurtful.

Cheers to everyone involved in making the new track by Estevan Comprehensive School a reality. It looks gorgeous.

Jeers to people who can’t tell the difference between a red light and a green light.

Cheers to the cast members of the Souris Valley Theatre for being so much fun.

Jeers to parents who allow their children to run up and down the aisles during a movie. That’s like, extremely annoying.

Cheers to all of our recent high school graduates. Good luck on the next part of your journeys.

Jeers to mothers who, in front of their own daughters, insult and trash talk other women and then blame society for the young girls’ poor self-image.

Cheers to honest people who have integrity, who say what they mean and mean what they say.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to acoopestevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

Saskatchewan has hard time breathing Special air quality alert issued for entire province People walking outside in southeast Saskatchewan may have thought they were living in a smoky metropolis, but that wasn’t the case. Extreme wildfire hazards in northern Saskatchewan caused the Ministry of Environment to issue an air quality alert for all of Saskatchewan on June 29,

as the smell of smoke filled the air, creating a haze that engulfed communities across the province. Communities to the north of the province were enduring the worst of it, but weather conditions have also pushed the smoke further south, all the way down to the state of Kansas.

At press time, health officials were advising residents with lung conditions to remain indoors due to the smoke. Anyone wishing to help victims of the wildfires can donate to Red Cross by phoning 1-800418-1111 or online at redcross.ca/in-your-community/saskatchewan

Relationships are beautiful, 50 Shades of Grey is not There was a lot of positive energy engulfing people’s lives this week, a lot of it surrounding the legalization of gay marriage across the United States. Love finally triumphed, and though hatred and homophobia undoubtedly still exists, it’s nice to know that members of the LGBT community no longer have to worry about living in a state that prohibits gay marriage. The positive ruling resulted in a lot of rainbowcoloured filters used on profile pictures and a lot of smiling faces. I also found a five-dollar bill on the ground … I wish. Amidst all this excitement, I read several silly stories and comments defending an awful writer who wrote a book which,

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling astonishingly, sold unbelievably well, so well, that it was even turned into an equally abysmal movie. Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James decided to green light a Q&A session on Twitter using the hashtag #AskELJames. And it was beautiful. Thousands of people chimed in, and immediately called her out for glorifying issues of rape and abuse. Shortly after, the obligatory writings defending James showed up, which didn’t have anywhere near

the same impact #AskELJames hashtag did. But, it was frustrating nonetheless. Comments regarding cyber bullying and abuse were mentioned, a laughable argument, when the majority of the tweets using that hashtag were smart and revealed nothing but the truth; either E.L. James doesn’t know what consent means, or she doesn’t care. Perhaps what’s even more troubling, is how she’s telling millions of women it’s okay to be in an abusive relationship, as long as the

partner is a billionaire. I think if someone were to apply a different coat of paint on the story’s setting, like a trailer park, and replaced the billionaire with a creepy, stinky man, no one on earth would think the story was OK. Police would likely be involved. I don’t know E.L. James personally. Heck, I haven’t even read 50 S h a d e s o f G re y . B u t enough excerpts and analyses have been spread across the Internet that paints a crystal-clear image of this woman’s idea of a “kinky” relationship. Perhaps she wrote this story and was simply swept away by the ensuing wave of success. But she must know, by now, how damaging her stories are (because one wasn’t enough) and

how easily young minds can be influenced. I don’t have anything against anyone who has read it. I think if I were in the right mood and wanted to laugh so hard I cried, I would read 50 Shades of Grey, too. However, I do get upset when people tout the book’s “brilliance” and claim it’s simply a new take on the aforementioned “kinky” relationship. It’s not. E.L. James has not only glorified a story about a vulnerable girl who is thrust into a series of confusing situations with a coercive billionaire, she has also tarnished the reputation of hundreds of amazing fan fiction writers who do amazing work on a regular basis, and are often unheard of.

Businesses mandating farming practices It is increasingly obvious that much in our world moving forward will not be imposed by government regulation, but rather by the philosophies put forward by big business. An example of the power business holds came clearly into focus recently after so much attention was focused on the symbolism of the Confederate flag in the United States in the wake of the massacre in Charleston, which left nine African-Americans dead in their church. The shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, has confessed to the murders, and has been quoted as wanting to start a race war. A widely circulated photo of the shooter holding a gun and a Confederate flag brought the debate of the flag’s racist toots to the forefront, becoming quickly a political football. Some politicians have called for the flag’s removal, at least from public buildings, other defending the flag just as adamantly. Meanwhile big business has taken action on the issue. Walmart, Amazon, eBay and Sears all announced bans on the sale of Confederate flag merchandise. “The announcements are the latest indication that the flag, a symbol of the slave-holding south, has become toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina. Gov. Nikki Haley announced in a Monday afternoon news conference that she supports removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds,” reported www.cnn.com The business decision in this case is a

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist powerful one of social awareness in regards to what the flag means for a large portion of their customers. Not all decisions are popular of course, even those that fall on the correct side of contentious debates. In January 2012, Starbucks joined Microsoft and Nike in announcing support of a Washington state bill to legalize same-sex marriage, which ultimately passed. There was a backlash from anti-gay groups against Starbucks, but the company has remained steadfast. “If you feel respectfully that you can get a higher return [than] the 38% you got last year, it’s a free country,” said Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, during the annual shareholders meeting on March 21. “You could sell your shares at Starbucks and buy shares in other companies,” detailed www.money.cnn.com So how does this relate to farming? Well, as businesses flexes their muscles in terms of determining which direction the broader society will go, some of their decisions will impact how we farm in the future. It’s already happening actually.

Southeast Trader Express online

The Western Producer website (www. producer.com) recently published a story on a company pushing dairy producers in a particular direction. “Saputo, a Montreal based dairy processor, says it will refuse milk from farms that fail to treat cows humanely,” began the story. “The new policy is expected to be implemented across Saputo’s operations in Canada, the United States, Australia and Argentina. “In a June 1 news release, the company announced it would not accept milk from farms that dock tails or that fail to administer pain control for dehorning and disbudding of calves.” That may seem like a reasonable decision, although the farm practices they want adjusted have been long-standing ones, and while pain control may be reasonable it does add costs to the farm and the company, nor are consumers likely to rush to cover through his payments for product. The concern for farmers is how far business may go in mandating farm practices. The possibilities can be both positive in terms of influence, and could just as easily be detrimental. Consider a large food chain not accepting any foods, which were not certified to be sprayed with glyphosate in the wake of the recent report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organization that the product is a potential carcinogen. While farmers may have a limited voice with big business decisions, they should at least be poised to be part of debates, which are sure to come.

Lower your risk of West Nile virus There are a growing number of people swiping at mosquitoes in the air as a result of the higher temperatures, and some of those mosquitoes may carry the West Nile Virus. Culex tarsalis mosquitos are more active in hot weather and are the type of mosquitoes that carry the virus. Typically, these mosquitoes are active from mid-July to the end of August. The level of risk depends largely on the weather. Most people who get infected with West Nile Virus will experience no symptoms, or only mild ones like fever, headaches and body aches. However, there is a small chance of developing a more serious illness, West Nile Virus neuroinvasive disease. This can lead to inflammation of the brain and even death. “The majority of people who get West Nile Virus will not need medical attention and will improve on their own,” Saskatche w a n ’s D e p u t y C h i e f Medical Health Officer

Dr. Denise Werker said in a press release. “However, a patient should see a doctor immediately if they develop serious symptoms like a persistent fever, neck stiffness, severe headaches, confusion, seizures or paralysis.” Since 2003, there have been 157 severe neurological cases and 17 deaths in Saskatchewan. “To reduce your potential exposure to West Nile Virus, take steps to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes while out enjoying our beautiful Saskatchewan summers,” provincial West Nile Virus co-ordinator Phil Curry noted. Minimize your exposure to mosquito bites: Use appropriate insect repellent when outdoors; Cover up. Wear light coloured, loose fitting, long-sleeved tops and long pants when outdoors; and reduce the amount of time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn. The peak mosquito hours are around

dusk and dawn, but Culex mosquitoes will also bite during the night. Reduce mosquito habitats: Culex mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Even small amounts of water, allowed to stand for a week or more, may produce adult mosquitoes; Regularly clean and empty containers that can collect water such as bird baths and eavestroughs; Clear yards of old tires and other items that can collect water; Ensure rain barrels are covered with mosquito screening or are tightly sealed around the downspout; and Maintain door and window screens so they fit tightly and are free of holes. More information about West Nile Virus, including surveillance reports updated weekly, can be found at www.saskatchewan.ca/live/ health-and-healthy-living/ health-topics-awareness-andprevention/seasonal-health-

concerns/west-nile-virus.

RCMP respond to gas leak On June 24 just before the noon hour, Estevan RCMP responded to a call at the former Sunrise Café in Frobisher. RCMP Const. Chad Mehl spoke with the Trader after the incident and said the caretakers in the building made the call after they smelled a suspicious gas emanating from somewhere in the building. No one was injured.

306-388-2522

“We cordoned off the immediate area,” Mehl said. “SaskEnergy and SaskPower did attend and shut off the gas.” He added that it took some time for the proper equipment used to measure gas levels to arrive, which did confirm elevated levels of an undisclosed gas. The matter is still under investigation.

fines are paid; Individuals who are banned from hunting activities in other jurisdictions will not be able to purchase a licence in Saskatchewan; and Wildlife officers will have up to three years to investigate hunting violations and bring charges forward. Earlier amendments also included a regulation to ensure that people who are in areas for maintenance payments will be denied the opportunity to purchase a hunting or angling license in Saskatchewan. The Act will also ensure that science-based wildlife surveys are carried out in a responsible and undisruptive manner. Properly conducted wildlife surveys and reliable data submissions are vital tools in the assessment, management and protection of wildlife populations and their habitat. Changes under the Act were first introduced in November 2014 and fulfill a commitment made in

EmpOwEring FarmErS  Ag in Motion brings innovation to the field All fArmers know decisions are made in the field. Imagine a place, an event, created to empower farmers by providing the information they need to make these important decisions. A place where they can see the latest equipment in action, in the field – operating in the same environment it’s made for. A place where farmers can see multiple varieties of live crop plots growing side by side in the field. This summer, such a place will exist. Introducing Ag in motion, Western Canada’s newest and only outdoor farm expo. Debuting July 21 to 23, on a half-section (320 acres) near Saskatoon, SK, it’s the only show that provides an outdoor venue for progressive farmers in Western Canada that want to see and experience the latest agricultural innovation, all in one place. Ag in motion will feature field equipment demonstrations, live crop plots and interactive exhibits such as “ride and drives” and smaller equipment demos. “Ag in motion will offer farmers a unique opportunity to compare crop plots and machinery, in action, and ultimately help them make decisions about the best products for their operations,” says Show Director Rob O’Connor. “There’s nowhere else in Western Canada where farmers can actually see multiple pieces of farm equipment in operation, take a test drive, or compare different crop varieties all in one place.” What does an outdoor show look like? The Ag in motion team brings together the expertise of seasoned farm show organizers.

The Expo is operated by Glacier FarmMedia, who owns Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, the country’s largest outdoor farm show held annually near Woodstock, Ontario. Also part of Glacier FarmMedia are Western Producer, Manitoba Co-operator, Grainews, Country Guide, Canadian Cattlemen, Alberta Farmer Express and AgDealer. The team knows what’s involved in delivering an outdoor show, and the potential such a venue provides. Now in its 22nd year, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show delivers 750 exhibitors and 42,000 visitors each year. Most attendees come to see the newest technologies in agriculture. Its success is based on the fact that active farmers attend to do business – make decisions – and the show is dedicated solely to agricultural products, equipment and services.

Ag in motion is applying the same model and will become a must-see event by showcasing cutting-edge agricultural advancements that empower Canadian farmers to help meet their goals in producing high quality, safe food in a competitive marketplace. To learn more about how an outdoor show looks and operates, view the videos on the Ag in motion website, www.aginmotion.ca. Live Demos and Interactive Exhibits The number of Ag in motion exhibitors is growing steadily each week and includes seed and crop protection companies, field equipment and livestock handling manufacturers, financial services, nutrition, baling products, tires, fertilizers and much more.

Grease 2 The sequel to the mighty popular musical known as Grease is so overshadowed by John Travolta and his groovy moves that many people fail to realize this movie actually exists. The on-screen chemistry displayed by the Thunderbirds and the Pink Ladies from Grease is unmatched, and despite Grease 2’s solid soundtrack, it fails to satisfy in any way, except in the laughter department, and that’s because you will likely laugh at how bad it measures up to the original.

Swift Current to host Western Canada Summer Games The Government of Saskatchewan announced on June 29 that the City of Swift Current will host the Western Canada Summer Games in 2019. “The City of Swift Current will provide a great setting for a fun and exciting Western Canada Summer Games,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said in a press release. “Our government is pleased to partner with the city and we look forward to showcasing the community and our province when the games come to Saskatchewan in 2019.” The host community was selected through a partnership with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport and the Saskatchewan Games Council. A site selection committee toured Swift Current in May and identified its potential as a host community. “The Saskatchewan Games Council would like to congratulate Swift Current on being selected

to host the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games,” Saskatchewan Games Council Chair Julie Brandt noted. “One of the many benefits to hosting an event such as this one is the legacies that it leaves behind for the host city and surrounding area. We know Swift Current will get behind these games and make them one of the best ever.” Swift Current mayor Jerrod Schafer said the city is extrememly excited. “Our thanks goes to the province of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Games Council for their confidence in our community. I am certain that Swift Current will host a tremendous event worthy of the belief our partners have shown in us,” he said. The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $1.5 million to bring the games to the province. The City of Swift Current will contribute $600,000, along with $300,000 in kind as

the host community. The event’s host committee will generate additional funds. The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will mark the fifth time Saskatchewan has hosted the games. Previous host communities include the cities of Prince Albert (1999), Regina (1987 and 1975) and Saskatoon (1979). The Western Canada Summer Games includes four western provinces and three territories: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory. The games feature athletic competition in approximately18 sports and showcase the talents of western Canada’s finest young athletes. The 2015 Western Canada Summer Games will take place August 7-16 in Wood Buffalo, Alberta. More than 2,500 athletes are set to compete.

Lewgood signs extension with Estevan Bruins The Estevan Bruins will, once again, be coached by Chris Lewgood, who signed a longterm contract extension on June 29. Bruins president Cory Prokop announced Tuesday the two sides have agreed to a four-year extension that will keep Lewgood, who is also the team’s general manager, in Estevan through the 201920 season. Lewgood had one year remaining on his original three-year deal he signed when he was hired in 2013. Prokop said the club is entering one of the most important years in its history, as they will be the hosts of the 2016 Crescent Point Energy Western

Canada Cup (WCC). So it was important for the staff and the executive to be focused on winning the WCC and the RBC Cup national tournament. “The executive has been very impressed with the job that Chris has done over the past two seasons with both the onice product and the off-ice operations of the hockey club,” said Prokop. “We felt it was imperative that we provide Chris with the peace of mind of a longer term deal so that he can focus 100 per cent on the upcoming season.” Much of the head coach and general manager position is about developing relationships with recruits, fans, commu-

nity partners and sponsors, Prokop said. He added it’s difficult to build those relationships with “a revolving door” in the head coach/ GM position. Lewgood said he is excited to remain with the team, and he looks forward to continuing to build the Bruins into a perennial contender. His family is also excited to remain in Estevan. “This has been the plan from day one,” said Lewgood. “My wife Jessica and I are very happy with the opportunity to extend the agreement with the team. Estevan has become home and we see ourselves as a part of the community and the organization for many years to come.”
