Mercury announces sponsorship of Summer Games Estevan Mercury Publications will be the exclusive print media sponsor of the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan. An announcement made on Tuesday confirmed the Mercury’s involvement in the Games as a gold sponsor of the event, donating $30,000 in advertising and outlining plans to provide up-to-date coverage of the provincial sporting tournament that will run July 24 to 30 next summer. Mercury readers will have to look no further for complete coverage during the Games. The newspaper will also be running weekly
features of each event in the weeks leading up to the Games. As part of the coverage of the event next summer, the Mercury will be publishing daily results with a new publication dedicated to the event and letting readers know which events will be happening throughout the current day. This report will be distributed and available at all of the venues as well as the athletes’ dormitories. Mercury publisher Brant Kersey said the Sask. Summer Games is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. “It’s been more than 30 years since we hosted
an event of this magnitude, it was a no-brainer to get on board by way of marketing and coverage leading up to and during the Games,” he said. “We’ve come a long way in the newspaper industry since the games were last held here in Estevan. There is so much more we can offer the public this time around, and we’ll be sure to keep everyone up-to-date as the action happens via our printed products and online.” During the Games, visitors to the Mercury website will be able to easily find up-to-date information and
updates related to the Games by using a tab, which will be located at the top of our site and will be dedicated to the Summer Games. “The Estevan Mercury has been a big supporter of bringing the Games to Estevan, even when it was just a dream for a couple of us,” said Brian Senchuk, co-chair of the Estevan 2016 Sask. Summer Games Committee. “They helped us spread the word that we were in the planning stages, which enabled us to gather all the sports together and establish our Bid Committee. In the days prior to the site evaluation committee coming to
Beach time for people and Piping Plover Regina - Nature of Saskatchewan is asking people to look out for Piping Plovers, an endangered shorebird. The Piping Plover was designated as endangered in 1985, and remains listed as endangered due to low population numbers. There were 764 plovers spotted in Saskatchewan during the 2011 international census, down from 1,435 in the previous 2006 census. “There are a number of factors contributing to their low numbers,” explains Rebecca Magnus, Plovers on-shore coordinator. “One of those is human activity along shorelines.” In mid-May, the female Piping Plover lays four, well-camouflaged eggs along many Saskatchewan shorelines. The eggs are speckled and blend in with the surrounding gravel and sand. Both parents incubate the eggs over 28 days, while the peak hatching occurs in mid-June. “Since Piping Plover
Additionally, a Piping Plover often call for people’s attention, faking a broken wing. This is usually done to protect its eggs from predators. The Piping Plover is one of the few shorebirds to display this action. Anyone who comes across a nest site or Piping Plover are encouraged to call Nature Saskatchewan’s toll free Hoot Line at: 1-800667-HOOT (4668).

Magnus notes that adult Piping Plovers may be spotted before the eggs. The eggs have distinctive black
markings - a single black neckband, a black band on the forehead and a short black-tipped orange bill. “While similar, they can easily be distinguished from Killdeer based on their smaller size, the single neck band versus the two bands found on Killdeer, and their lighter colour,” adds Magnus.
to none,” Kersey added. The Mercury will be printing a Special Keepsake Edition previewing the Games. “We are fortunate in Estevan to have media that supports local initiatives that enrich our community. The Mercury has been very supportive in covering the events thus far on our road to the Games. We are very confident that the coverage that they will provide our community and our visitors during the Games will be second to none,” said Brenda Lyons, marketing and promotions co-chair of the Estevan Games.
visit, the Mercury helped us rally the support of the community to demonstrate our readiness for the Games. In my mind, they were a key factor in our successful bid.” The Estevan Mercury was a big part of the Saskatchewan Summer Games in 1980, and Kersey said the publication is committed to playing a key role in next year’s event. “Our first meeting with Brian Senchuk and Brenda Lyons got the ball rolling. Now, working directly with Brenda and Nicole Clow the process has been terrific. The committee they have working on the games is second

Still dancing around climate change A smokescreen continues to cloud the lack of effort allocated to tackling climate change in Saskatchewan. This smokescreen is in our backyard, and recently, it became even thicker. The official opening of the independent research project known as Aquistore, Canada’s first commercial-sized deep saline carbon dioxide storage project is the second half of the provincial government’s attempt to maintain coal as a viable energy source. The first half of this plan, the retrofitted carbon capture unit at Boundary Dam, officially opened back in October. Together, they will capture, store, study and sell the C02, while putting the tiniest dent into Saskatchewan’s problematic greenhouse gas emissions, which are the highest in Canada on a per capita basis. And that’s where the story is likely going to end. Cenovus Energy will continue to benefit from the purchased captured C02 through enhanced oil recovery - until their contract with SaskPower expires - which means even MORE
Alex Coop
Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling oil will be burned that will simply add to the initial problem this project is supposedly is trying to solve. Studies will continue, but climate change will always take a back seat. It’s difficult to slam a plan that does involve vast amounts of new technology, which as a result, is attracting the attention of researchers and engineers across the globe, and potentially opening doors to possibilities we haven’t even considered, yet. A lot of hard work has been put into carbon capture. It makes the project’s overall failure to meaningfully reduce GHG emissions that much more painful. According to Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and Saskatchewan Community Wind - who aren’t new to the energy scene and are experts when it comes to the
analysis of energy portfolios - only seven per cent of all GHG emissions generated by the province’s coal industry will be removed through carbon capture, which is less than two per cent of the province’s total emissions. CCS technology is often criticized for its high price tag, and though I don’t think the financial aspect of a project meant to reduce greenhouse gases should be heavily scrutinized, the fact that CCS technology is, at the moment, only greatly benefitting an oil company, simply makes it seem like the environment is some kind of secondary objective that may or may not be addressed one day. The positive economic activity that’s been frequently touted by SaskPower and the government could be achieved through the same
investment in wind energy. Wind is cheap, much easier to manage and it’s clean. I’m still confused why CCS got the green light in our province when wind, according to various reports and studies, would be $1 billion cheaper. I understand new restrictions on coalfired power plants came into force this year that required some difficult decisions to be made years ago when it came to the future of our coal fire plants, and despite the risk SaskPower put themselves in financially with the $1.4 billion CCS project, it’s hard to feel satisfied with where this project is heading when it’s obvious it’s not going to hit GHG emissions that hard and the financial burden is likely going to trickle down to electricty payers over the next couple of years. Extending our commitment to wind energy and renewable power is not something our province is willing to accept, but it has to happen in order to meaningfully address GHG emissions. It’s possible for minimized use of coal to co-exist with wind and other alternate sources of
energy sources. It would have taken some time, careful planning and consultations with experts. It would require the same type of effort that was put into CCS. SaskPower’s additional wind projects that were announced back in March are small positive steps forward, but it’s not enough. Our recently appointed environment minister is also unclear about the effects climate change has on our planet, proven by his statement from a few weeks ago when he said he wanted to “look at the science,” as if the years worth of undeniable scientific evidence wasn’t enough. It’s these kinds of actions and inactions that contribute to this toxic “whatever” attitude Saskatchewan continues to have towards climate change. Saskatchewan isn’t the worst when it comes to GHG emissions. On a world scale, Canada isn’t a huge contributor, either. That doesn’t mean we should be dragging our feet because we’re not the worst culprits.
Climate change will boost farmland investments Facebook may seem like a strange place to find some rather optimistic news regarding the future of farming, but just the other day, I happened upon a video clip via the social media site that would make any farmer smile. The short, three-minute clip was from The Globe and Mail’s Inside the Market, with Paul Waldie. On this particular clip, Waldie has as his guest Canadian economist Jeff Rubin. Rubin, a former chief economist at CIBC World Markets, is also the author of the recent book The Carbon Bubble. In the short clip Rubin talks about how climate change, in particular the trend to a warmer climate, may have some rather significant upside for Canadian agricultural producers. Rubin suggests the Canadian Prairies by being a northern latitude region will see average temperatures climb more significantly than the global averages. He said if the temperature averages rise two to three degrees, the growing season expands four to five weeks, which not only increases yield potential but expands what crops can be grown here. As it stands, Canada is the eighth largest export of agriculture products. With climate change Rubin said the country could become number one or two in terms of exports. By that point I was intrigued, so I went searching out a bit more on Rubin’s book. On Amazon I found that the book suggests the current vision of Canada’s economic future by government is off point. “Since 2006 and the election of the first Harper government, the vision of Canada’s future as an
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist energy superpower has driven the political agenda, as well as the fast-paced development of Alberta’s oil sands and the push for more pipelines across the country to bring that bitumen to market. Anyone who objects is labeled a dreamer, or worse -- an environmentalist: someone who puts the health of the planet ahead of the economic survival of their neighbours,” noted material on the book The Carbon Bubble. “In The Carbon Bubble, Jeff Rubin compellingly shows how Harper’s economic vision for the country is dead wrong. Changes in energy markets in the US -- where domestic production is booming while demand for oil is shrinking -- are quickly turning Harper’s dream into an economic nightmare. The same trade and investment ties to oil that pushed the Canadian dollar to record highs are now pulling it down, and the Toronto Stock Exchange, one of the most carbon-intensive stock indexes in the world -- with over 25 per cent market capitalization in oil and gas alone -- will be increasingly exposed to the rest of the world’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. “Rubin argues that there is a lifeline to a better
future. The very climate change that will leave much of the country’s carbon unburnable could at the same time make some of Canada’s other resource assets more valuable, our water and our land. In tomorrow’s economy, he argues, Canada won’t be an energy superpower, but it has the makings of one of the world’s great breadbaskets. And in the global climate that the world’s carbon emissions are inexorably creating, food will soon be a lot more valuable than oil.” While obviously, it comes down to which vision you choose to think has the greatest clarity, but from a farm perspective, Rubin’s view has to be good news. Certainly, the long-term vision of many has been that ultimately food in a world of growing population will become the key commodity, right beside safe drinking water. The question of how the world pays for that food at rates high enough to cover production costs of course remains another question. But Rubin is an optimist and suggests farmland as an investment, while solid today, will only get better. Rubin said the west still has the potential to be the economic driver of Canada, but not because of oil reserves, but rather because of agricultural production, because in a world of climate change food will become more valuable than oil. While climate change has the potential to disrupt our world in ways most shy away from even contemplating, farmers here may find a silver lining, at least is Rubin’s crystal ball is on the right channel.

New track nearly complete, still work to be done By Mackenzie Hientz sports@estevanmercury.ca
The Track at the Estevan Comprehensive School will soon be complete as Carpell Surfaces had started applying the rubberized surface last week. Co-Chair of the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games Com mittee Brian Smith, said as long as the weather cooperates, they’re hoping to have the track complete
later this week or early next week. The rubberized surface consists of two coats and by the time they are done applying them, the rubber should be around 13 millimetres thick, Smith said. After the second coat is on, then they will have to let it settle before the lines for the track are painted on. Smith said there will be a lot of measuring before the lines are painted,
Carpell Surfaces works on applying the rubberized surface for the new track on May 27.

which will take around a day to do. Even though the track itself is almost complete there is still a lot of work to be done around the track, Smith added. “There’s’ still going to be landscaping work to do around the track to make it
process to get to where we’re at (today),” Smith said. “We hope to have some sort of track event this fall or definitely next spring.” He said they will be working with the local school divisions to set something up and to have

look good,” he said. There will also be new sand brought in for the jumping pits, a 12-ft high cage will be installed for the hammer and discus events, and a few storage buildings will be built. One storage building will be used to store the equipment for high jump and the other building will used as storage for the other track and field events. Smith hopes the whole facility will be completed by the end of summer. “It’s been a fairly long
a regional competition or just a track and field day. Also, once the track is fully completed he wants everyone in the community to use it. “We want everyone to use this, it’s not just for the track kids at the school and …basically everyone can run and jog or whatever.” The track is the main project for the 2016 games, but Smith said there will be small projects, like venue preparations, that will need to be completed prior to the start of the Games.

CRA warning taxpayers of scams The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is warning all taxpayers to beware of telephone calls or emails that claim to be from the CRA but are not. These are phishing and other fraudulent scams that could result in identity and financial theft. People should be especially aware of phishing scams asking for information such as credit card, bank account, and passport numbers. The CRA would never ask for this type information. Some of these scams ask for this personal information directly, and others refer the taxpayer to a Web site resembling the CRA’s, where the person is asked to verify their identity by entering personal information. Taxpayers should not click on links included in these emails. Email scams may also contain embedded malicious software that can harm your computer and put your personal information at risk. Examples of recent telephone scams involve threatening or coercive language to scare individuals into pre-paying fictitious debt to the CRA. These calls should be ignored and reported to the RCMP (see contact information below). Examples of recent email scams include notifications to taxpayers that they are entitled to a refund of a specific amount, or informing taxpayers that their tax assessment has been verified and they are eligible to receive a tax refund. These emails often have CRA logos or internet links that appear official. Some contain obvious grammar or spelling mistakes. These types of communication are not from the CRA. When the CRA does contact you by telephone, there are established processes in place to ensure your personal information is protected. Should you wish to verify the authenticity of a CRA telephone number, contact the CRA directly by using the numbers on our Telephone numbers page. For business-related calls, con-
tact 1-800-959-5525 and for individual concerns, contact 1-800-959-8281. To better equip taxpayers to identify possible scams, the following guidelines should be used: The CRA: • NEVER requests information from a taxpayer about a passport, health card, or driver’s license. • NEVER divulges taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer. • NEVER leaves any personal information on an answering machine or asks taxpayers to leave a message with their personal information on an answering machine. When in doubt, ask yourself the following: • Am I expecting additional money from the CRA? • Does this sound too good to be true? • Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? • Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? • How did the requester get my email address or telephone number? • Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? • Is there a reason that the CRA may be calling? Do I have a tax balance outstanding? The CRAhas strong practices to protect the confidentiality of taxpayer information. The confidence and trust that individuals and businesses have in the CRA is a cornerstone of Canada’s tax system. For more information about security of taxpayer information and other examples of fraudulent communications, go to www.cra.gc.ca/security Anyone who receives a suspicious communication should immediately report it to info@antifraudcentre.ca or to the institution that the communication appears to be from.

Movies of Yore - 1980 Neil Simon’s Chapter Two:
Robert Moore directs this adaption of Neil Simon’s Broadway play about a writer falling in love for an actress while mourning the death of his wife. It doesn’t capture the magic its on-stage counterpart does, but the actors do a good job on screen.
The Changeling:
This creepy haunted house thriller reaches elevated levels of corniness, but the craftsmanship behind the sets and genuine creepy moments sprinkled throughout the movie are big positives that overshadow its negatives.

Seeding for 2015 is nearly done As of last week, producers had 87 per cent of the 2015 crop seeded, well ahead of the five-year (2010-2014) average for this time of year (61 per cent), according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Dry weather has allowed many producers to finish seeding while others will need another week or more. The southwestern and west-central regions are nearing completion with 93 per cent of the crop in the ground. The northwestern region has 89 per cent seeded; the southeastern has 87 per cent seeded; the east-central region has 83 per cent seeded; and the northeastern region has 75 per cent seeded. Little to no rain was received this week, with some areas in the northeastern region reporting 2 mm. Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as four per cent surplus, 58 per cent adequate, 30 per cent short and eight per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 49 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 12 per cent very short. Rain is needed in much of the province to help with crop emergence and to recharge the topsoil that is getting dry in some areas. The majority of emerged crops are either at or are behind their normal developmental stages for this time of year. They are in relatively good condition with most crop damage being caused by flea beetles, cutworms and lack of moisture. Despite heavy frost in many areas early last week, most crops were not damaged; however, there has been some re-seeding of oilseed crops. Pasture conditions are rated as four per cent excellent, 44 per cent good, 32 per cent fair, 14 per cent poor and six per cent very poor. Farmers are busy finishing seeding operations, controlling weeds and moving cattle. Follow the 2015 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.
