Jeers to those who can never reply to an email or return a phone to parents wondering about swimming lessons. Jeers to who ever delivered the latest directory books in the Hillside area and just threw them on the door step instead of putting them in the mail boxes. Who would have thought we’d end up with rain and snow and wind? So much for having a directory that can be used. Thanks a lot. Jeers to all those who don’t seem to be able to read the sign at the corner of King Street and Souris Avenue. You cannot turn left or proceed straight through. Jeers to the person who pulled a U-turn on my front lawn. Seriously, who does that?
Yes, we have Shih Tzu puppies! They are 7 weeks old, and will be moving back to EHS on April 16. They will be ready to go when they are 8 weeks old and have a vet check plus their Àrst shots. We have 3 females and 2 males. Oh so darling!
Thank you for your continued support!
Jeers to the writer of the “Congratulations Rachelle Geisel!” story and to the proofreader for the grammatical error of “Her & 6 friends won ...” which should read “She and 6 friends won ...”. Good grammar is so important in the media to stop bad grammar from forming.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A sudden change of plans could lead to a misunderstanding with a friend or family member. Be ready to offer a full explanation of your decision. A past favor is returned. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect pressure from those who want you to change your position on a matter of importance. However, the determined Bovine will be able to withstand the bullying and win out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s time to stop dwelling on past disappointments and move on to other possibilities. By week’s end, you’ll be meeting new people and making new plans for the future. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A long-simmering situation between co-workers threatens to heat up and could create problems with your work schedule. Best advice: Consult a supervisor on how to proceed.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have just learned that someone close to you is keeping a secret. And, of course, the Cat’s curiosity has gone into overdrive. But be patient. All is revealed soon enough. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Don’t give up. The recognition citing the good work you recently did will come through. Meanwhile, an opportunity opens up that can lead to a lot of traveling later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A financial crunch eases, but it’s still a good idea to keep a tight rein on what you spend for nonessentials. Education becomes a major focus as the week winds down. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Recent encounters with stressful situations could require some restorative measures to get your energy levels back up. Talk to your doctor about a diet and exercise
program. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) New connections follow changes on the job or in your personal life. But keep your feelings reined in until these relationships have a chance to develop. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Pay more attention to your aches and pains, and avoid self-diagnoses. Seek professional advice to make sure these problems won’t lead to something more serious. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You love doing research and learning new things, so you’ll be happy to know that education becomes a big part of your life at this time, and for some time to come. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your Piscean penchant for doing things logically could be challenged by an equally strong emotional reaction to a new situation. Best advice: Keep the two factors in balance. BORN THIS WEEK: You love music and nature. You would be an excellent environmentalist, as well as a fine singer or musician. Music fest ends with hi-lites and awards For 16 days in March, the Estevan and District Music Festival showcased the community’s established talent, as well as young, upand-coming musical stars. The festival was capped on April 3 when the Hi-Lites and Awards show was held in the cafetorium at the Estevan Comprehensive School. Melanie Hiske, an organizer of the festival, noted that numbers for participants was down a little, but thought the event went well, and they were happy with the four adjudicators. “It’s always a stressful but fun time for the participants, and they find it especially rewarding when they get to come to the awards show and get to perform or receive an award for the hard work they have put in.” said Hiske. One musician who was particularly honoured at the awards show was Kaylee MacKenzie, having captured the marquee Murray GM Award of Merit for outstanding performance in multiple disciplines. She performed on the piano, Spring Celebration, by Chatman that evening and also collected the Shirley Andrist, outstanding piano performance in the open category, outstanding individual woodwind performance and is a member of the ensemble Estevan A Cappela Singers, who were awarded with the Pon Perry Harmony Award for best chorus of the festival. Winning the open outstanding band/instrumental ensemble were Chanel Theivin, Everett Schwab and Matthew Grunnert. The music festival went

The NHL playoffs have finally arrived. For the last month and maybe more, some of the best playoff races we’ve seen were going on. Well, we would have seen, if anybody were actually interested in the last 20 games of the regular season. At some point in February, I usually tune out the NHL. I’ve been thinking of tuning in around Christmas so the fatigue of the season doesn’t hit me so early. Now that the playoffs are here, it is once again time to get excited about hockey. After filling out a Viking playoff pool form, a startling thing happened when I got to the end: I chose the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup. I don’t know quite how it happened. If you just asked me who I would pick to be the last team standing in June, I don’t think they would have been my first choice. When I actually sat down and went series by series, they wound up with Lord Stanley’s silver cup. The problem with these hockey pools is that part of my strategy is to play the field, which is maybe a stupid thing to do
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers on my part, since I am against hundreds of opponents. Nonetheless I decided to play the field and make some off-the-board picks. The first is the Penguins and Flyers quarter-final series that started Wednesday night. Obviously I took the Flyers, but my reasoning is that that series is truly a tossup, with a slight edge toward the Penguins. The team with Sidney Crosby, a goaltender who has actually performed well in the playoffs and this season’s top points getter gets the slight edge in my book. I’m not alone here. Looking at the TSN poll online for who will win it all, 25,437 had responded and 4.2 per cent picked the Flyers, while a commanding 30.2 per cent selected the Penguins. That
would be enough votes to have a majority government in this country. The smart money is certainly on the Penguins, even though the Flyers can’t be considered anything worse than a mild underdog. With those things considered, the majority of people in the pool will select the Pens to take the series, so anybody taking the Flyers gets a nice start on the rest of the pool if they actually win the series. It’s not the best move to consciously pick the team you think is actually going to lose, but I like to make most of my decisions in hockey pools the same way I make them in real life: by betting on the what if. That’s not how I made all of my picks in the hockey pool this year, but it’s how everyone has to make a few. It just turned out that it had an incredible impact on how the rest of my predictions played out. A team that I think will lose in the first round, wound up being my pick for champagne spraying and watery eyes in two months. I guess that’s what happens when your strategy is to pick the horse with the sagging spine to win the race.
Mixed messages in federal budget The recent budget delivered by the federal government is an interesting document for agriculture and their end users, Canadian consumers. It’s not so much the dollars allocated to agriculture, (let’s face it, farming isn’t exactly a big ticket item these days in terms of federal government investment), but there is some interesting language which seems to be pushing farm regulation in this country further from what consumers often say they want. In terms of consumers, we hear two common themes in terms of food supply. On one hand, consumers want safe food. And consumers increasingly want to buy locally, as a way to ensure quality, and to support area producers. We have come to expect the food we buy to be free of bacteria and such which might negatively impact our health. When certain foods are found to be the root of illness outbreaks, they make media headlines, and scare consumers in a major way. Mad cow disease nearly ruined the British cattle sector, and one cow found in Alberta caused years of export bans being imposed on Canada, so we have seen first-hand the impact a food health scare can have. The case of identifying and tracing that Alberta cow spoke volumes about how well the Canadian system worked in doing its job. To find one cow out
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist of thousands being slaughtered in this country, and to trace its history, was actually quite amazing. The systems Canada has created in terms of assuring food safety are stellar, and have worked well for decades. Few of us even give a fleeting second thought to the idea of whether the food on our dinner plate is safe. So the budget includes eliminating the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s enforcement of non-health and nonsafety food labelling claims. One has to question why the government would be monkeying with the CFIA when it clearly has worked rather well over the years. The budget basically put the accuracy of labelling on the onus of the consumer. Like many things in the budget, details are yet to be released, and therein lies the greatest fear. As it stands, consumers will have to carry the banner if they see a problem, and frankly the average consumer will not have the same power that a federal government agency enjoys when it comes to standing up to
a big company. And certainly labeling goes beyond ingredients these days. We have consumers who want to purchase food locally, and that means a label such as made in Canada is rather important in making informed decisions to support Canadian farmers. Farmers will also face a significant change in the budget announcement as the Canadian Grain Commission will shift to full cost-recovery through fees for service. You can make the argument farmers should cover costs specific to their business, but the CGC is 100 years old and has been the final authority for grain grading and grain inspection in Canada. There is a public benefit to that authority, assuring quality for both domestic and export bound grains, and so having general taxpayer investment has long been deemed appropriate. The current government in Ottawa sees it differently, and as a result $44 million in costs will shift to fee-forservice. Consumers want increased safety assurances, the ability to trace food from table to farm being an example, and want to buy locally to reduce the carbon footprint. With that in mind, the federal government moves in the budget appear to be ill-timed and out-of-touch with what consumers desire.
Is there an app for that? Driving to my apartment from the grocery store the other day, my boyfriend asked me if I knew how to cut up a whole chicken. I shook my head no, and jokingly suggested that “maybe there’s an app for that?” He, completely serious, nodded and said he hoped so. And that’s how it seems to go a lot of the time these days. I use my iPhone for everything. I needed a new recipe for a drink last weekend, so I downloaded a Mixologist app to run me through every single alcoholic beverage ever created. I was looking for some good thigh exercises to try at the gym, so I downloaded an exercise app. I wanted to find out the name of a song on the radio, so I downloaded the Shazam app and made the app tell me.
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me When he needed to learn how to tie a tie for a formal affair in Saskatoon, he downloaded an app and we spent half an hour trying to get it right. Where would we be without our cellphones and the answer to all life’s questions literally at the touch of our fingers? I use my phone as a GPS in my car, despite already having a GPS in my car. This doesn’t make a lot of sense, since my Garmin is currently set to “Australian male voice,” and that’s way better than the chirpy woman who’s always “UPDATING” on my phone. Imagine if I had to try
to read a map while driving down the streets of Regina trying to get to a shoot? And you all think texting and driving is dangerous. Another way that cellphones are taking over the world: taking pictures. I can take a pretty different photo with my phone camera. Pretty decent video too. And the way things are going, fairly soon cameras will be a thing of the past among non-photography industry people. I know I never use my digital camera. PLUS pictures taken from my phone can be directly uploaded to the Internet and shared with people who probably don’t care that I saw a hilarious personalized licence plate today. And the best part of all: I often write this column from my iPhone, especially on days when it’s suddenly
1 a.m. and I haven’t written a thing and am nowhere near a computer that’s hooked up to the Internet. I love you, cellphone. You are probably the most important part of my life. I can always count on you, and you only let me down when your battery dies. And thus I predict the next step for smart phones: relationship substitutes. We’re pretty much already there. I mean, isn’t there an app for that? Tonaya Marr does spend a lot of time on her cellphone, but she does socialize and maintain relationships with other people. If you’d like to be one of those people, send her an e-mail at tonaya. marr@gmail.com or send her a tweet @TonayaMarr. Conveniently, she can access both these methods of communication from her cellphone!

Young Estevan girl remembered by friends

Aela Smith remembers her friend and cousin, Aeramis Kolke, as a young girl who was obsessed with cookies, would chase bunnies and hide behind her smile. F o u r t e e n - y e a r- o l d Aela organized and led a memorial for Aeramis, who committed suicide one year ago as a 12-year-old. About 20 people, both friends of the late girl and some adults, gathered at Churchill Park Tuesday afternoon to remember their friend and reflect on how she passed. A banner was hanging on a fence with a photo of Aeramis making

a peace sign. Aela read from a prepared speech she had written, breaking into tears as she recollected some of her memories, like spending an entire day together at the leisure centre. She said that bullying played a large role in Aeramis’s death, and that was one reason she wanted to hold a public memorial on the first anniversary of her passing. “I felt like a lot of people still don’t understand how bad it is. To have this one year as a memorial, it’s kind of an awareness (of how she died) and to honour Aeramis Kolke.” Pink Shirt Day was recognized with a march in downtown Estevan the week before, and is an initiative to raise awareness about bullying, with the ultimate goal of empowering youth to stand up to bullies. Aela said talking with another person about problems is a necessary way to get some of the weight off one’s shoulders. “We have to share what we’ve done and open up. To be true with ourselves is to let out our demons about things,” she added.
Aela Smith organized a memorial, one year after her friend and cousin Aeramis Kolke died suddenly at 12. She admits to having been on both sides of bullying before and said victims of bullying can learn something from the way Aeramis died. She said victims of bullying could be “on the edge” and nobody would know. It’s something everyone needs to think about before attacking someone else,
she said. Many who attended the memorial wore pink as well, and pink wristbands were handed out to those present. Some wore pink shirts with Aeramis’s photo on the front. A few others spoke up during the memorial and shared stories of how they remember the young girl.

If you made a signature scent, what would it smell like?
He He She She Said
The Pope introduced his own fragrance recently, showing that absolutely everybody should have their own bottle of personal smell. His scent includes hints of tree blossom and grass notes. I would hope that the Pope’s grass notes are captured from freshly cut grass. That smell is divine. I don’t think tree blossom is an actual thing that one can capture scent from. That must be what the whole aroma game is all about; use a bunch of nonsensical phrases that explain nothing but hopefully pull at the imagination heartstrings of the consumer. The only necessary ingredients for fragrance building are some catchy buzzwords. My fragrance would include the essence of cherry, with a smooth, mildewy finish. Or perhaps it would attack the nose with the breath of tumbleweed followed by notes of nighttime raspberries and damp geraniums. Doesn’t that sound pleasant? It’s all nonsense, but I think if I took that description to Calvin Klein they would come up with something that retailers wouldn’t be able to keep on the shelves. Maybe orange should be included in this fragrance. In the office the other day someone was eating on orange, and there were a lot of comments about the powerful odour it was projecting. Orange does have an overwhelming smell to it, similar to how tomato overpowers anything else that tries to tickle your palette. I really am going to have to get the contact info for all the fragrance companies. I swear I can get a bidding war going for this stuff. It certainly sounds more exciting than the Pope’s grass and tree spray stink.
This is a fairly easy question for me: my signature fragrance would smell like sarcasm. The difficult part is identifying exactly what sarcasm smells like. I’ve decided to just go with two of my favourite things, and explain why they define me. Lemon: I have always loved yellow candies the most out of all other candies. And lemon is a fruit, so if you don’t already know that lemons are sour, you might expect them to be sweet. Consider how babies react the first time they eat something sour. First, there’s the look of trust – babies trust their mothers won’t feed them something terrible. And then there’s the face of horror, upon realizing that the lemon’s innocent facade actually masks quite a bit of bite. And they never forget the experience. Chocolate: chocolate seems to be one of those things that either you really like, or you’re just not a huge fan of. And not all chocolate is the same. Depending on where you get it, chocolate can be awesome, or it can be fantastically awesome. So there you go. My perfume would be citrus-y, with a hint of chocolate. I may look nice and sunny on the outside, but once you get past the outer layer, you’ll find out that I’m pretty sassy. And you aren’t going to forget it. After that I’m like chocolate: either you’re a fan, or you’re not. And you’re probably not going to change your mind anytime soon, which is just fine with me.

March against bullies brings out hundreds a stand against bullying in schools and the workplace. Pink Shirt Day started after a high school student was teased for wearing pink. Shortly afterward, two other students handed out pink shirts to others in order to show their support for the victimized student.

According to Shannon Culy, a school counsellor with the Holy Family Catholic School Division and organizer of the event, it’s an issue that should get the attention it deserves. “I think it’s something that kids talk about, need to talk about,” Culy said. “We need to keep that awareness going. It isn’t something that just happens on one day where we all wear pink. It’s something we always need to keep on the forefront. We need to be respectful. We need to stand up, and we can’t sit back anymore.” Students from both elementary and secondary schools attended the march that began at the courthouse.
“Days like this are important to have because bullying is obviously something that is happening in our schools,” said Brayden Gervais, a Grade 11 ECS student, adding, “so I think it’s important to spread this good message to kids and help eliminate bullying in our schools.” Gervais also spoke about the Challenge Day that the high school brought in for the Grade 9 students last month. It was a threeday program that dealt directly with bullying and the idea of respect among all students. “I wasn’t part of Challenge Day, but I heard it was very successful. I think a lot of kids learned a lot, and it was a good experi-
ence for our school.” Challenge Day is something that organizers hope will continue in subsequent years as a program that all their Grade 9 students go through when entering the school. Gervais said there is bullying that happens at ECS, but added that he feels the school is taking steps to address it and that it may be changing attitudes already. “I think it’s been a lot better. I think the high school is doing an excellent job with programs like Challenge Day and this bullying march to help stomp out bullying. There’s still bullying, but I think it’s beginning to subside.” Culy was pleased with
how the march unfolded and hopes that it will continue on a regular basis. “It went fantastic. It was great to see all the kids out here, and it was great to see all the pink.” The organizers, through the Red Cross and Holy Family Catholic School Division, had been working to get everything organized since last fall, but the last few weeks were when the finer details came together. “It really started to come together in the last few weeks. We had kids distribute posters downtown and get final invitations out,” said Culy. See www.estevanmercury.ca for video coverage of the event.

Our family recently went on a spring break holiday. We went on a GetRealLive cruise so it was a work/holiday for me which was fun. (Get ready for news regarding our cruise next year ... you’re all invited.) However, reality strikes and today I am back at work and soon the kids will return to school and that means routine returns to our home as I’m sure it will or possibly has to many of yours. For our family, routine means no more jammy-clad, lazy mornings, breakfasts that become brunch - and then lunch. One day rolling into another not really knowing if it’s Monday, Tuesday or Thursday and forget the date, during holidays we really turn off. However, soon it will be back to early morning breakfasts and the tying of school neckties before scooting out the door with lunches packed, hair combed and teeth brushed (I hope), all in an effort to reach school before the bell rings. It’s pretty tough when the children have become used to a later bedtime, enjoying the relaxed nature where tomorrow and the next day are just another holiday. With this in mind, it has been time to re-introduce
Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life bedtimes and prepare the kids for the return of routine. Last night, my eldest had the hardest time going to bed; she tossed and turned and tried her best at counting sheep, and then some. After two hours of failed attempts to capture that elusive rest, frustration found its way into her room, at which point, she found her way into mine! Like many of you, I have struggled on the odd occasion with insomnia. This was one of those times. Funny thing, normally I can fall asleep
anywhere, as can my eldest. But last night wasn’t our night. So I hatched a plan. I took my beautiful girl by the hand and said, “Don’t worry, lovely, I know just the thing to help you.” I took her to the couch just off our kitchen, wrapped her in a blanket and prepared a cup of warm milk for her to sip on. I handed her the mug and slipped onto the couch beside her, allowing her to rest and relax into my arms. I sat stroking her hair and whispering “I love you” into her ear. We didn’t exchange many words,
just a few from me to her in order to comfort her and let her know everything was OK. I’ve always understood the mystery behind the cup of warm milk and its obvious effects on the human body. But now I’ve completed an even greater puzzle - a cup of warm milk provided by the comforting arms of a loved one, the stroking of hair and the applying of soft gentle words whispered into an ear, is the perfect panacea for the sleep-deprived. In no time, my eldest daughter was tucked in her bed, dreaming of angels. May I encourage you to keep your ears and eyes open, and know that somewhere along the path, someone in your home will need a cup of warm milk. Don’t miss the moment. Time to start throwing rocks? So the auditor general thinks the F-35 is going to cost Canada about $25 billion. Now what? Do we start throwing rocks at bad guys? It may come to that. There’s so much flying around right now about the replacement of Canada’s CF-18 fleet, it’s hard to keep track. But a few things are apparent: First, Canada must get new fighter planes, soon, before the remaining CF-18s start falling out of the sky (like the other 18 that already have for various reasons). Second, the projected cost, all in all, now looks like it will be close to what we intend on spending to replace almost our surface fleet in the navy - supply ships, frigates and coastal patrol boats. These are light, single occupant aircraft, not frigates, folks. Third, this fiasco of rising costs requires accountability, and Peter MacKay’s head has to roll. There’s absolutely no way ministerial responsibility can be ignored here. None. If MacKay knew the numbers the auditor general speaks of, but hid that fact, he lied. And if he didn’t know,
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile he was grossly incompetent. The heir apparent of the Conservative Party needs to take one for the team and resign. The numbers we are talking here are not trivial by any measure. The total amount can be measured as a percentage of Canada’s GDP, for goodness sake. It’s more than the entire annual defence budget, and twice the current annual budget of the province of Saskatchewan. With the U.S. Congress picking this program’s overruns apart for years, only an idiot could not know the price was shooting into the stratosphere quicker that the plane itself is capable of flying. Now it is no longer an issue of what plane we buy, and how many, but rather who knew what when. But even after all the political drama is done, Canada still needs planes
in the air. Are there other options? Yes. Are they as capable as the F-35? No. Are they as likely to bankrupt us? Probably not. The most likely alternative is the latest version of the F-18E, the Super Hornet. It’s a substantially updated airframe, with larger wings, substantially more range than our current CF-18As. It’s also a lot cheaper that the F-35. Instead of getting 65, we could like get 100, maybe more, for less. Remember that we lost 18 CF-18s, we are going to lose F-35s, too. The F-18 Super Hornet, like its predecessor the CF18, also has two engines, something that was supposedly a prime consideration when the F-18 was chosen over the F-16. Two engines were touted as being important for Arctic sovereignty
and over-the-water patrols. Did someone forget that when the single-engine F-35 was considered? The Super Hornet can be purchased today. We know they work, because the U.S. Navy has been flying them for several years. The Australians couldn’t wait for the F-35, so they are buying Super Hornets, too. It would mean Canada would be flying combat aircraft, the initial design of which first flew in 1978. But then again, the B-52 first flew in 1952 and the last one rolled off the line in the late ‘60s. It’s going to be flying for a few more decades. Fighters are not bombers, but it goes to show that sometimes, older designs still work. That’s especially true if the newer design is going to bankrupt you, or embarrass your government a la the Gomery Inquiry, times 50. One way or another, we are going to have to buy something. Otherwise, we’re going to be reduced to throwing rocks at bad guys. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian.zinchuk@ sasktel.net

Over 100 stranded on Via train in Alberta NATIONAL HINTON, Alta. - About 130 passengers on board a Via Rail train have been stranded for more than eight hours in Hinton, Alta. after breaks were detected in the tracks. VIA spokesman Malcolm Andrews says the westbound passenger train was on the way to Vancouver on Sunday when CN crews detected the breaks.
The train was still in Hinton late Sunday night while repairs to the track were being made, but Andrews says CN expected the job to be completed by about 10:30 p.m. MT. Andrews says the train has electricity, heat, food and water, and that the passengers have been understanding about the delay. He says damage to the
tracks is not uncommon this time of year when the rails heat up during the day and then cool rapidly when temperatures plunge at night. TORONTO - A new study is urging the public to discuss just how often routine dental X-rays should be carried out, but Canada’s top dental body says the U.S. research simply underscores a decreasing and well-know

risk associated with the procedure. A study published in the American journal “Cancer” on Tuesday found people who frequently had certain dental X-rays in the past — when radiation doses were higher — were linked to an increased risk of a common, but usually non-cancerous, brain tumour. While the results of the study aren’t mean to alarm people into abandoning dental X-rays altogether, researchers at Yale University want people to re-think how often they get the procedure done. VANCOUVER - The bloodied and battered corpse of a young killer whale whose death may be linked to Canadian war games has prompted an investigation by U.S. authorities. The body of the southern resident orca — an endangered species in the United States — was discovered on Long Beach in Washington state in February, just days after HMCS Ottawa conducted sonar training exercises in the waters off Victoria, B.C. A preliminary exami-

nation indicated significant trauma around the head, chest and right side of the orca known as L112, but results of necropsy and pathology tests and a scan of the animal’s head are incomplete. Just hours after the navy sonar tests were heard, southern resident killer whales were spotted in the same area in the Haro Strait that divides Canada and the United States. INTERNATIONAL WASHINGTON - More than 150,000 North Koreans are incarcerated in a Sovietstyle, hidden gulag despite the communist government’s denial it holds political prisoners, a human rights group reported Tuesday. The U.S.-based Committee for Human Rights in North Korea said it based its report on interviews with 60 former prisoners and guards. It includes satellite images of what are described as prison labour camps and penitentiaries. The report documents the alleged incarceration of entire families, including children and grandparents for the “political crimes” of other family members, and infanticide and forced abortions of female prisoners who illegally crossed into China and got pregnant by men there, and were then forcibly repatriated to North Korea. LONDON - The names of three dozen British journal-
ists allegedly involved with a shady private investigator were leaked Tuesday to the Internet, posing another potential embarrassment for the U.K.’s scandal-tarred media. Paul Staines, who blogs under the name Guido Fawkes, published what he said were more than 1,000 recorded transactions between staffers at Rupert Murdoch’s British papers and freelance detective Steve Whittamore, who was convicted of trading in illegally obtained information. In a blog post, Staines said he wanted to expose the “industrial scale criminality” perpetrated by Britain’s press, accusing newspaper companies of refusing to name names because they “do not wish to report their own crimes.” NEW YORK, N.Y. Teen births fell to a record low in the United States in 2010, according to a new government report. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously reported that U.S. births by mothers of all ages had dropped in 2010 for the third straight year. Experts think the economy is a factor. The rate for teenage moms reached its lowest point since record-keeping began in 1940. The rate fell 9 per cent to about 34 per 1,000 girls ages 15 through 19. The decline was seen among all racial and ethnic groups.

Under-the-radar Rangers will reign It’s been a weird year in the National Hockey League to the extent that one of the least talkedabout teams is the one that should be regarded as the favourite to win the Stanley Cup this spring. We’ve heard plenty about the Pittsburgh Penguins and their stellar play without Sidney Crosby. We’ve heard lots about the defending champion Boston Bruins and their designs on two in a row. We’ve heard more than we need to about the Vancouver Canucks and their rebound season after Stanley Cup heartbreak last spring and we’ve heard plenty about the underdog St. Louis Blues and their extraordinary play under undisputed coach of the year, Ken Hitchcock. And the New York Rangers? Oh, have they got a chance? Uh, more than a chance. They’re the best under-the-radar team in years, but over four sevengame series, goalie Henrik Lundqvist is going to be a tough man to beat. For the first time since 1994, the Rangers - who broke a 54-year drought by beating Vancouver that year - will do it again, giving the Canucks back-to-back seasons of June heartbreak. Hopefully the B.C. rioters will go on vacation for the month of June and let the Canucks lose in peace and quiet. Fresh from the Las Penton Casino are the approximate odds of 11 contenders for the Cup. NY Rangers (4-1) Lundqvist, Gaborik and a smothering defence a potent combination. Vancouver Canucks (9-2) - President’s Cup winners are playoff hardened after last year. Pittsburgh Penguins (5-1) - Sid and Malkin are back in full bloom. Detroit Red Wings (7-1) - Never count out the experience from the Motor City. Boston Bruins (10-1) Goaltending question mark leaves them on outside. St. Louis Blues (12-1) - Expended too much energy trying for President’s Cup. Nashville Predators (15-1) - Elite goaltending (Pekka Rinne) and late addition of triggerman Alexander Radulov make Preds an intriguing Cup threat. Philadelphia Flyers (18-1) - Third overall in
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist the East, but difficult road to the Cup with so-so goaltending. Phoenix Coyotes (201) - Hot down the stretch. Ottawa Senators (221) - Will super year continue for coach MacLean, sniper Spezza and surprising Karlsson? Los Angeles Kings (35-1) - Las Penton Casino’s pre-season pick have the offence and the goaltending to scare a lot of teams. Not this year - San Jose (perennial playoff fl op); New Jersey (102-point year, but the East is too tough); Washington (lousy year will continue); Florida (barely qualified); Chicago (Toews’ health a concern). • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle, relating a story proving Randy Moss comes by his bad reputation honestly: “Raiders coaches spotted a weakness in the opposing defence and sent in a pass play calling for Moss to cut across the Coliseum’s baseball infield. Moss broke off his route. Confronted on the sideline, Moss explained, ‘Randy don’t run on dirt.’” • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “A Texas prisoner yelled ‘Go Cowboys!’ right before he was executed. Which is exactly the same thing that would have happened if he yelled that in Oakland during a Raiders and Cowboys game.” • Len Berman of ThatsSports.com, noting that the first long-distance phone call from Boston to New York was made on March 27, 1884: “The caller, I think, yelled, ‘Yankees suck.’” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, after Sen. Dick Durbin called for an investigation of NFL bounties: “This may be a new low for the NFL: A politician from Illinois says you’re dirty.” • Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press, on the Texas Rangers’ $26 hot dog topped with chili, sautéed onions and shredded cheese: “Hey, these days, do you know a cheaper way to get gas?” • R.J. Currie of sports-
deke.com: “A survey says Canadians rank No. 5 among the happiest people in the world. No. 1 if you exclude Maple Leafs fans.” • Currie again: “The government of Canada is phasing out the penny. This will end great Canadian traditions like penny jars, penny-ante poker and CFL signing bonuses.” • Comedy writer Alan Ray, on the Knicks’ interest in Kentucky coach John Calipari: “In the pros, he wouldn’t have to worry with player academics or NCAA rules and regs. In other words, a lateral move.” • Headline at SportsPickle.com: “Robert Griffin III trying to enjoy his final weeks of happiness before becoming a Redskin.” • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald, not impressed with the Mariners and A’s opening the MLB season in Tokyo: “What’s next? Japan opening its sumowrestling season in Des Moines, Iowa?” • The WHL’s Edmonton-Kootenay playoff se-
ries had a family twist - the Oil Kings’ Griffin Reinhart pitted against his brothers, Max and Sam. Tweeted Griffin: “Best comment on the ice goes to my little bro Sam saying when we were in a scrum: ‘If you touch me I’m telling mom.’” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com, on the NFL’s “Bountygate”: “Reaction around the NFL to the Saints locker room audio: One - ‘That’s despicable.’ Two - ‘Quick, burn OUR tapes.’” • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “If Fred Couples had won the Masters, he’s so old they would have given him a plaid jacket.” Care to comment? Howard wins fourth men’s world title NATIONAL BASEL, Switzerland - Canada skip Glenn Howard started his day at St. Jakobshalle by bopping his head to the music that blared through the arena before the gold-medal game at the world men’s curling championship. He ended it by standing where he always does when he plays at this event — on the top step of the podium. Howard appeared comfortable from the start of the 8-7 extra-end victory over Scotland’s Tom Brewster on Sunday. It was the fourth career world men’s title in four tries for the Ontario skip, who threw his broom in the air and hugged his teammates after making a winning draw inside the four-foot. WINNIPEG - Claude Noel may have fishing on his mind with the NHL season done for his team, but the Winnipeg Jets coach doesn’t want to be breaking out the rod and reel this soon next year. “The bar has got to go up and we have to raise it,” Noel said Sunday. “I was real patient this year, which was real good for me and I think it was good for the team. “I’ll be less patient next year.” The Jets, who played as the Atlanta Thrashers last season, finished 22nd in the NHL at 37-35-10
and missed the playoffs — again. The franchise made only one playoff appearance in 12 seasons in Atlanta, bowing out in the first round in 2007 to the New York Rangers. BURLINGTON, Vt. - Canada’s performance was uneven, but their 3-2 win over Finland was important psychologically at the women’s world hockey championship Sunday. Less than 24 hours earlier, Canada took their worst beating ever from the U.S. in a 9-2 loss to open the tournament. That debacle could have demoralized the Canadians. Their mental training consultant, Dr. Peter Jensen, told the team prior to Sunday’s game to not give the loss to the U.S. more significance that it deserved. TORONTO - Mary Spencer won’t have to look far for extra motivation in her quest for Olympic gold — it will be written around her wrist. The three-time world boxing champion, who will be gunning for gold when the women’s event makes it Olympic debut in London, suffered her first loss in more than a year last weekend — and the timing, she said, couldn’t be better. Spencer was beaten by American Claressa Shields at the American Boxing Confederation’s continental
championships, going down to the 17-year-old by a score of 27-14.
INTERNATIONAL MIAMI - Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended for five games Tuesday because of his comments about Fidel Castro, and he again apologized and said he’ll do whatever he can to repair relations with CubanAmericans angered by the remarks. The suspension by the team takes effect immediately. It was announced shortly before Guillen held a news conference to explain what he said. The 48-year-old Venezuelan told Time magazine he loves Castro and respects
the retired Cuban leader for staying in power so long. In response, at least two local officials said Guillen should lose his job. LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully will miss the Dodgers’ home opener for the first time in 35 years because of a cold. The 84-year-old Scully has been advised by doctors to rest and will miss the game against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Scully, who joined the Dodgers in 1950 and is the dean of major league baseball broadcasters, was preparing to announce the Masters golf tournament in 1977 when he last missed the team’s home opener. He did announce the Dodgers’ games at San Diego this
season. Scully usually does all of Los Angeles’ home games. NEW ORLEANS Bill Parcells is unlikely to become the New Orleans Saints’ interim coach, according to multiple reports. Parcells prefers to remain retired and not replace his protege and friend, Sean Payton, who will serve a season-long suspension for his role in New Orleans’ bounty system, the reports said. Saints spokesman Greg Bensel declined Tuesday to confirm Parcells has been ruled out as a possible Payton replacement, saying the team “has nothing to report” concerning the search for an interim coach. ter United blew open the Premier League title race by slumping to a surprise 1-0 loss at lowly Wigan on Wednesday, allowing second-place Manchester City to close the gap to five points with a 4-0 win over West Bromwich Albion. United delivered one of its worst displays of the season and was deservedly sunk by Shaun Maloney’s fine curling shot in the 50th minute, inflicting the champions’ first league loss since Jan. 4 and only their fourth of the campaign. City capitalized fully by easing past West Brom thanks to Sergio Aguero’s double and goals by Carlos Tevez — on his first start since returning from his lengthy spell away from the club — and David Silva.

Philco television Q: I have a 1957 Philco television set; only one was made. -- Pat, St. Cloud, Fla. A: The picture you sent appears to be a Philco Model UG-4242. It was marketed as a “Predicta Holiday,” and quite a few were manufactured. According to the “Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide,” edited by Kyle Husfloen, your set is worth about $400. *** Q: I have a Japanese tea set that dates back to the 1940s. I would like to know how much it is worth. -- Vera, Baltimore, Md. A: Your question is impossible to answer, even with the pictures you sent me. It is a little like asking how much an old car is worth. If it is a 1934 Packard Roadster, it could be valued well
above $100,000. On the other hand, if the car is a 1989 Yugo --- often called the worst car ever manufactured --- not so much. The value of an antique or collectible often depends on three factors: rarity, condition and demand. If you truly need to know the value of your tea set, contact an appraiser in the business pages of the Baltimore phone book and make certain that he or she deals in personal property, not real estate. Berry to one of his employees “for 25 years of service, 1929-1954.” Any idea of its value? -- Joseph, Barre, Vt. A: Presentation watches are fairly common and often were given by larger companies to faithful employees upon retirement or to mark lengthy
work service. To find out the value, I recommend you contact Janet Gaynor, who buys, sells and appraises estate jewelry. Her contact information is P.O. Box 35038, Tucson, AZ 85740, and 520-907-2839. *** Q: I have a Duncan and Miller crystal candlestick holder in the “First Love” pattern. I’ve been offered $90 for it. -- Sally, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: Take the money and run. Your candlestick holder is worth about $30. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Ziti With Sausage and Zucchini The whole family will love this new take on ziti. 1 package (16 ounces) ziti rigate or wagon-wheel pasta Salt, to taste 3/4 pound sweet Italian-sausage links, casings removed 3 medium (about 8 ounces each) zucchini, each cut lengthwise in half, then cut crosswise into 1/4-inchthick slices 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 can (28 ounces) whole plum tomatoes Grated Parmesan cheese, optional 1. In large saucepot, prepare pasta in boiling salted water as label directs. 2. Meanwhile, heat nonstick 12-inch skillet over
medium-high heat until hot. Add sausage meat and cook until browned, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently to break up sausage. With slotted spoon, transfer sausage to bowl. 3. Discard all but 1 tablespoon sausage drippings from skillet. Add zucchini, pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt, and cook until zucchini is golden, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in tomatoes with their juice; heat to boiling, breaking up tomatoes with side of spoon. Return sausage to skillet. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer about 5 minutes longer. 4. Drain pasta; return to saucepot. Add sausage mixture; toss well. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese if you like. Serves 6.

Make Puppets With Personality
Every nook and cranny of your home can be a stage when your kids play with puppets. Stirring up imaginations can be as easy as putting your hands in socks or even drawing a face on a banana. Here’s a way to tell a tale while practicing the ABC’s. Make a special collection of puppets with kids that show off 26 endearing personalities, as inspired by the ABCs. Start with one or two letters, and add to your collection every week. Here’s how: 1. Make a basic handpuppet pattern by placing an adult hand (with thumb and
pinkie extended to the sides and three middle fingers together) on a sheet of paper. Draw around the hand, allowing extra space on all sides. The pattern should be about 12 inches long and 8 inches wide at the widest point. Adjust the sketch to make it even, and cut out along the lines. 2. Place the pattern on two pieces of lightweight felt, then pin and cut out. Use a hole punch to punch holes around the cut-out felt pieces 1/2 inch in from the edge (except the bottom edge) and about 1/2 inch between each hole. It is easier to punch the holes one layer of felt at a time. Be sure that holes match up when placing the pieces together. 3. Match the felt pieces, and weave cording or a long shoelace in and out of the holes, beginning and ending at the bottom corners
of the puppet shape. Knot each end. Your child’s hand should fit in the bottom opening with the three middle fingers in the wide body and the thumb and pinkie to the sides. 4. Use felt scraps to cut a shape of an alphabet letter. Glue the letter onto the puppet. Add details such as buttons, wiggly eyes, yarn, pipe cleaners, fabric scraps, trinkets, etc., to create the puppet’s features and personality. The items should represent words that start with the same alphabet letter. Here are some ideas: “A” is for Alligator, wearing antlers, carrying an apple with an ant crawling on top; “B” is for Baby Bunny with a blue bow and buttons; “H” is for Hippo with a heart and a hanky; “L” is for Lazy Lion
with leaves and a lollipop; “P” is for Purple, Polkadot Pig with a peace sign, pearl and pompom; “T” is for Turkey with a turquoise tutu and two teeth; “W” is for Woolly Walrus with a wiry wig; “Z” is for Zany Zebra with a zero and a zigzag. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. After the Áoods of 2011 we’re on the road to
Recovery
Woodlawn,
in their words...
When the water Ànally receded and we went down to see the damage, I must admit I was in total awe. The damage was unbelievable. It was heartbreaking to see a park and golf club devastated.
To me, Woodlawn Golf Club, means memories … memories of events and memories of friends. I’d like to mention just a few of each.
My family, like so many families in this community, have used Woodlawn Park for many years, whether it be the golf course, campground, Rotary Park, Souris Valley theater, swimming pool [years ago], football, soccer and baseball Àelds, or just a place to go for a drive.
I remember getting up early in the morning and playing the front nine with one red ball and one white one, then rushing home to clean up and get to school. This was in the late sixties. I remember Nicholson.
Rose
and
Well, the drive that day was a little different. We had to get through silt drifts two or 3 feet high to travel down the road and as I looked to the campground, it was half gone. There were picnic tables in the trees, debris everywhere and it became apparent very quickly that the park and golf clubs future may be in jeopardy.
Charlie
I remember all of those Saturday Night Two-Balls…followed by roaring Àres … wiener and corn roasts … we used to have behind the old clubhouse. I remember Diane Krafchuk and Jack and Florence Wilson.
We as an executive were silent as we tried to assess the damage that day.
Jim Wilson
I remember playing Night Golf with as many as nine groups of eight. It was especially exciting when we played in lightning storms. WOW! The Áood of 2011. A disaster for many of the residents along the Souris River. Growing up at M & S Mines, I had seen Áoods travel through Woodlawn and Roche Percee and even though they caused considerable damage, they were quick.
I remember Archie Holley and Cliff Hawkes. I remember Sunday afternoon horse races during the Woodlawn Classic when we had hundreds of people following the action. I remember Barrie McKinnon and Jack Fingler.
But 2011! It seemed to last an eternity! Three times our members saw the opening of the new season. Never did we imagine that the third time would be the LAST time that we would play the course that people all over Saskatchewan loved to play.
I remember when, with a group of my juniors, we cleaned out the dead trees on the far side of number 15 without authorization. I almost got hung for that but it sure sped up play. I remember Andy Martin and Jim Morgan. I remember in the early nineties when Woodlawn was Ànancially on the ropes. At one point things got so bad we were asked to sell the club for $1.00.
This loss was devastating! Not only Ànancially, but more important, socially. It took away the moments when we meet our many members at the course. Think about that! How many times did you see your club mates last summer? Sure, there were several member groups who traveled elsewhere to play, but it was not the same.
I remember Buddy Johns and Al Pidhorny. I remember a number of members buying Àve-year memberships at the time so that we would have operating capital. Now, thanks to the Áood of 2011, we seem to be back at that point. All of the people I’ve mentioned and many, many more, gave time, effort, and in many cases money to keep our club running. We now need a new effort to help create memories for the generations of golfers that will surely follow. I remember Rod Fagerheim.
Eldon Rondeau
As a long time supporter of the Junior Golf Program, it meant a year away from their weekly events and the FUN times that they had. They went to other activities and we can only hope that they return as they are the life line of any club. The same for our other members, especially us seniors. It was a daily part of our summer lives and it was taken away. WE must return to make our club stronger! As I close, there are tears in my eyes as I recall the Áood of 2011! But I look forward with GREAT anticipation to the opening of our NEW course!

Safely clear away wasps
Q: Checking out the eaves last week, I saw several small wasp nests tucked into the more sheltered corners. What’s the best way to get rid of these nests? -- Charlie L. in South Carolina A: There are a few ways to remove those small wasp nests from the exterior of your house, and the quicker, the better. Wasps could possibly begin extending the nests inside the walls if they’re not dealt with. In fact, you’ll want to check the attic or storage space above the eaves, as well as crawlspaces under the house, for evidence of wasps before starting the removal. To remove the wasp nest, make sure the kids and pets are inside to prevent possible stings from angry wasps. Wear long sleeves, pants, work gloves and sturdy shoes to protect yourself. And of course, if you have an allergy to bee stings, don’t clear the nests yourself; call in a pestcontrol service. The most effective way to get rid of the nests and reduce the chances of the wasps coming back is to use a chemical spray. Wait until dusk, when the wasps have returned to the nests, then spray according to the directions on the product.
You may have to wait up to a week for all activity in the nests to subside; then you can climb up to the eaves and carefully pull off the nests. An all-natural method for wasp removal is to gear up (cover all your skin, put protective netting over your face, and have an escape route) and spray each nest with a jet of water from your garden hose. This doesn’t kill the wasps, and you’ll probably see them building nests again in fall or spring. What if you found that the wasps have gotten inside your home’s siding during your initial survey? You’ll probably want to stick with the chemical spray of the outside nests (not your interior walls) in order to kill them. One of my readers recommended using a wet/ dry vacuum with a hose attachment to suck up as many wasps from their entry/exit point as possible. If neither of these methods eradicate the wasps, contact a pestcontrol service. HOME TIP: Found a wasp’s nest in a tree at the far end of the yard? Consult a pest-control service before removing it, as the displaced wasps could simply move over to your house. the natural gifts of our planet. One of the goals of Earth Day is to measurably reduce carbon emissions. Here are some small things we can do in our kitchens and with our food to make a difference: --Buy locally grown produce. It spends less time on a truck, which reduces CO2 emissions. The health benefit of locally grown produce is that it retains more nutrients. The longer the fruit or vegetable is away from the plant, the more nutrients it loses. Most food at a farmers market was picked on the morning it is sold. --Walk more! You can burn 100 calories for every mile walked, and for every mile you don’t drive you can prevent a pound of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. --Buy in bulk. You’ll save and money and reduce the amount of packaging that has to go into the recycle bin or the trash. --Use cloth whenever possible. Americans consume one-third of the world’s annual paper production, so think twice before you purchase paper towels or you print something from the computer. --Take your own bags to the farmer’s market or grocery store. There is no need to purchase new bags, just re-use

the ones from your last trip or buy reusable cloth bags. (An exception would be the bags that meat was packaged in. Meat and poultry can harbor bacteria, so those bags should be thrown out). So, fill your bag full of your favorite fresh vegetables and make this delicious recipe for Roasted Vegetables with Tofu Topping. ROASTED VEGETABLES WITH TOFU TOPPING 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, halved lengthwise and thickly sliced lengthwise 2 large red or yellow bell peppers, cored, ribs removed and sliced 1/2 pound fresh asparagus spears, tough ends trimmed and discarded 1 large zucchini, diced 1 large carrot, diced 2 large tomatoes, thickly sliced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon hot sauce 1/2 tablespoon honey For topping: 2 cups whole wheat
Panko breadcrumbs or dried breadcrumbs 7 ounces firm tofu, drained but not squeezed dry, crumbled 1/2 cup (3 ounces) finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano 1/2 cup (3 ounces) Pepper Jack cheese, shredded 8 basil leaves, sliced into fine ribbons, or 2 teaspoons dried basil, crumbled 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled 1 teaspoon paprika 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil 1. Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 400 F. 2. Place a large, 12-by-17 rimmed baking sheet into the oven to heat. 3. Rinse and drain vegetables, shaking colander to remove any remaining water. In a large bowl, mix together olive oil, onions, bell peppers, asparagus, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, soy sauce, salt, pepper, hot sauce and honey until well-combined. Carefully spread vegetables on the hot baking sheet in an even layer. Bake for 30 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix together bread-
crumbs, tofu, cheeses, basil leaves, oregano, paprika, garlic, salt and pepper until wellcombined.Alternatively, mash ingredients together in a large bowl with a potato masher. 5. Remove vegetables from oven. Sprinkle tofu mixture over vegetables in an even layer. Drizzle topping with the olive oil. Continue baking, uncovered, until topping is golden brown and vegetables are heated through and tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Serves 6 to 8. We struggle to keep our favourite memories alive, but we sometimes don’t realize that we are already holding the important things within our hear ts. Grandma, five years without you has felt more like twenty. We may not be able to remember the sound of your voice, but we do remember how strong and courageous you were. Watching TV can be a fun geography lesson • When packing cookies in a single layer, I trace the shape of my container on parchment paper using the lid as a template. It’s pretty easy, and it fits exactly.
• Keep a small wastepaper basket or shredder near your home’s entrance, if possible. You can get rid of paper items you don’t need -- think, junk mail -- before it even makes it into the house. This is especially important if you tend to let things pile up, like I do! -- R.F. in Louisiana • For scratch paper, I use the back side of my kids’extra art pages. We choose the best
to display, then they chop up the rest into small booklets, which they staple at the top. And we have notepads! -M.L. in Iowa • Keep a map or globe in your family or TV room. This way, when a place is mentioned on the news or in another program, you can find it quickly on the map. This is a great thing to do with kids, but it’s handy
and worthwhile for anyone. M.A., via email • If you have a very stinky trash can, scrub it with a paste made from baking soda and just a bit of water. It works as a mild abrasive. Then fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar and spray. It should foam for a moment. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse well with hot water. Clean and deodorized!
• We have large buckets that we use to store toys on our back porch. It seems that whenever we’d touch the buckets to get a toy out, a horde of mosquitoes would erupt. There’s no water, so we didn’t know what to do. And we didn’t want to douse it with chemicals, as it’s filled with kid stuff. A neighbor suggested we put a few dryer sheets in each one, and they
