Local’s new series nets nomination A former Estevan resident, who has moved on to Calgary with a career in acting, has recently been nominated for an award for a new web series she has not only performed in, but produced as well. Lara Taillon premiered the pilot for her web series Necessary Action in February, and last week the show was nominated for an award from the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA). It is part of the best digital program or project category, and she will be at the 38th annual Alberta Film and Television Awards on May 12 in Calgary. Taillon was informed of the nomination by a phone call from the director of the series. Her initial reaction was asking, “Are you sure?” She wondered if there were some way he could be mistaken. “You’d think you’d get an e-mail or something. I’ve gone back to check (the list) in case somebody misread it,” she said. It took a day to sink in. “I’m still a little bit stunned.” It’s Taillon’s first show in a role that sees her as a writer and producer, as well as the primary role of Robi.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Temper your typical Aries urge to charge into a situation and demand answers. Instead, let the Lamb’s gentler self emerge to deal with a problem that requires delicacy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You are aware of what’s going on, so continue to stand by your earlier decision, no matter how persuasive the counter-arguments might be. Money pressures soon will ease. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) By all means, have fun and enjoy your newly expanded social life.
Jeers to inconsiderate neighbours who spoil an otherwise quiet, pleasant day by polluting the air with their unwanted, less desirable loud music. A little consideration would be more than appreciated. Jeers to the residents of and around Roche Percee who let their dogs and cats roam at will. Shame on you! Jeers to all the shoppers that shop on Good Friday and Easter. Because of shoppers, us retail workers must stay open and work instead of enjoying a day with our family. Jeers to people who complain about the prizes they’ve won.
But don’t forget that some people are depending on you to keep promises that are very important to them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You need to wait patiently for an answer to a workplace problem and not push for a decision. Remember: Time is on your side. A financial matter needs closer attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You now have information that can influence that decision you planned to make. But the clever Cat will consult a trusted friend or family member before making a major move.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: You’re finding that more doors are opening for you to show what you can do, and you don’t even have to knock very hard to get the attention you’re seeking. Garry Hammett, right, shakes hands with Rick Hansen during the 25th anniversary of Hansen’s Man in Motion World Tour, when Hammett was in White City acting as a medal bearer for the event.
Former Bienfait mayor a man in motion Twenty-five years ago, Rick Hansen came through Saskatchewan on his way to completing the Man in Motion World Tour. In a wheelchair, Hansen completed the equivalent of three marathons every day through 34 countries. The trek took two years, beginning in March of 1985 until he completed his tour in 1987. He covered 40,000 kilometres in that time, raising millions of dollars for research into spinal cord injuries. Hansen was back in Saskatchewan Feb. 4, for the 25th anniversary of the tour. Invited to take part in the celebrations and the relay was Bienfait’s Garry Hammett. The former mayor of Bienfait was selected to take part in the festivities in White City. Hammett was one of 7,000 medal bearers from across the country to participate in the celebrations that have resulted during this year’s tour that sees Hansen going back through the cities he first passed through in the 1980s. “There were 20 different medal bearers in White City,” said Hammett.
“When they started at the hall, each medal bearer would pass off to the next one, and I was the last one in White City. I carried it out to the No. 1 Highway to Lonnie Bissonnette. He was a skydiver and base jumper, and he had a spinal cord injury from base jumping. I passed off to him and he took it on to Regina.” Hammett was injured on Sept. 27, 2003, when a construction accident damaged his spinal cord. Since then, he has been managing in a wheelchair. “We looked it up to see how (Hansen) had his accident and he was in the back of a half-ton sitting in the back on a toolbox, getting a ride, and they lost control.” He hit a tree and the toolbox pinned Hansen against it. “It’s really something to see how a person of that calibre, how he continued on and trained,” said Hammett. “When I was in Wascana taking therapy, to see people with injuries, some of them don’t get out of bed and lie there all day long. It inspired me that I’m not going to be one of them.
I’m going to recuperate and get out and enjoy the rest of my days. “It’s going on nine years now,” he added about his injury. “I cope very well and get around real good.” Awareness, added his wife Margo, is something needs to continue to be pushed. “For people to understand what people need, and what accessibility really means. We’ve run into instances where you phone ahead for hotel rooms, and you phone ahead to make sure it’s accessible, and you get there and they think, ‘Oh, you can’t get out of your wheelchair?’” Garry said that accessibility has improved since his accident. Each medal bearer carried the 25th anniversary medal about 300 metres before passing off to the next participant. Afterwards they went to Regina and attended the ceremony at Victoria Square. Hammett said the presentations were about how people can make a difference toward spinal cord injuries and the many kinds of fundraising.

Margo said Hansen spoke about what you do after an accident that results in a spinal cord injury. “He’s just doing this to make an awareness, to raise money and help in the research of it,” she said. Everyone had to submit names across Canada to fill all the medal bearer spots that they needed. Hammett originally applied in Grenfell, but then transferred to White City because it was so close to Regina where he has some family members who were able to participate at the celebration as well. “It was a real joy and pleasure to be there and meet (Hansen),” said Garry. The Rick Hansen Foundation has raised about $252 million since his Man in Motion World Tour, which raised $26 million. All the money goes to fund spinal cord research, accessibility projects and quality of life initiatives. The end to the 25th anniversary celebration will come in Vancouver at BC Place near the end of May.

The best and worst professional fields The best and worst jobs for 2012 are out, and it doesn’t look good for me or this area. Oil-rig worker was the worst job last year but is only fourth worst this year. That means a large number of people in Estevan are working what was formerly the worst job in the country. The only ones worse are lumberjack, dairy farmer and enlisted military personnel. The job right after oil-rig worker, but still slightly better is newspaper reporter. Ouch. I did not realize how bad I actually have it and now realize I am not nearly self-deprecating enough. The rankings by careercast.com included 200 jobs and were based on five categories: physical demands, work environment, income, stress and hiring outlook. Of those 200 jobs, newspaper reporter was 196. Our hiring outlook was a negative number, only ahead of jobs like shoemaker, which I didn’t think still existed outside of China. The rankings aren’t all about money, as only one job in the top 10 had a mid-level earner bringing in more than $100,000, and at $104,000 for the financial planner, that’s just above.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Mid-ranked jobs were cosmetologist at 100. Hairstylist is 105, and at 54 is archeologist. I never thought my job was the best, but here is a list of jobs better than newspaper reporter: meter reader, seaman and dishwasher. Chauffeur is considered a much better job, coming in at 153. Advertising salesperson ranked 136 of 200. Editorial and sales are always in natural competition with each other. I really hope the sales girls don’t get wind of this list because it will go right to their heads. I guess reporters are entitled to do more complaining than we already do. I remember working at my hometown paper in the summer between college semesters. All the papers in that area were under the same controlling corporation, so each summer the editorial staffs of about eight publications got together for a lunch.
The reporter whose office I shared told me the lunch wasn’t mandatory, and that it’s really just an opportunity for everybody to complain about their jobs with the others. Norm Park asked if we were just stupid for liking a job that could be ranked 196 out of 200 jobs. I’ve only put up with it for a few years, but Old Parkie has been dealing with it for 40 or so. I’m not really sure, and I’m a little scared to ask. The truth is, of course, that in our own way, we are a little stupid. Reporter isn’t a job for everybody. If you like it, that’s great, but of my graduating journalism class from Niagara College, which was about 30 or 35 people, maybe five to eight were going to continue on and be journalists in the long-term. In a best-case scenario, that’s less than a quarter of the people who paid tuition and fees in order to spend two years learning a craft they never intended to use. I would certainly agree that on a list of 200 most desirable jobs, newspaper reporter would probably top out at around 196, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s the fifth-worst job available. As long as we stay ahead of the oil guys, at least we have some bragging rights around here.
Weather prime factor for good crop If there is one thing April 2012 should be teaching anyone not already aware of it, weather ultimately determines farming. Farmers have garnered a reputation of never being completely happy, and the fact they spend most of the time between spring thaw and the first snows of the next winter watching the weather has a lot to do with that. The truth is, perfection in weather for farmers is almost an unattainable dream. That said, even having a good year is something so based on weather patterns that one actually has to wonder how they ever grow a crop. The recent weather is a prime example. When the snow disappeared in March and the sun allowed people out on the streets in their short sleeves for a few days, there was the prospect of an early spring. Farmers had to be thinking about getting to the fields early. April has changed that. Rain, snow and cold have reminded us all just how fi ckle Prairie weather can be, and how quickly it can change. The recent weekend certainly reaffirmed that for me. Saturday in Moose Jaw
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist it was warm, and short-sleeve weather, even into the evening. Sunday morning as we left the southern city, the temperature was 6 C, and it steadily declined all the way back to Yorkton where we arrived to -4 C temperatures, having driven through freezing rain for half the trip. That rain turned to snow and once again things went white. Forecasts for the week ahead are not going to set any records for warmth either. While spring moving back to a more normal time in terms of farmers hitting the field is not a major concern, the fact is that the weather only needs to be bad for a week or two longer than normal, and the spring seed window could tighten significantly for farmers. And that is something those of us who head to the grocery store fully expecting
the aisles to be well-stocked with safe food need to appreciate. Farming is a very precise undertaking in terms of ideal weather. Farmers can buy the best seed, optimize soil nutrients with fertilizer, and have advances on their side such as global positioning systems, and still lose a crop to a late spring frost. Too much spring moisture, as was the case in many areas in both 2010 and 2011, can leave acres idle, too wet to seed. A hot streak in July as canola is flowering can impact the number of pods which ultimately produce seeds. A dry week as crops fill their heads can reduce yields. An early fall frost reduces grades. So when we hear farmers complaining that it is too hot, or dry, or too cold, and wet, it is because the ideal weather to produce a crop is an elusive thing. And when you consider the investment in farming, both in terms of money and effort, and realize it hinges ultimately on weather for a grain farmer to be successful, it explains both the preoccupation with the weather that farmers have, and their tendency to rarely be completely satisfied with what the weatherman is saying.

Why Pinterest is making girls crazier than normal I joined Pinterest today. If this is an unfamiliar Internet term to you, I’ll explain: Pinterest is a social website where you can browse photos of things you’re interested in. The photos are all organized by caterogy, making browsing easy and horribly convenient. Plus, on Pinterest, you can create your own “boards” that let you organize and “repin” the images you are interested in. And, on top of all that, you can follow your friends and see what they’re posting. And it’s addicting as can be. I was playing around on it, checking out home
decor and recipes, making boards and having the best time ever. My night began to be centred around online shopping and baking the delicious foods found on Pinterest. I was so happy. Then I started browsing through some of my friends’ posts, and ended up looking at wedding dresses. Because the back on one of them was so ornate and detailed and oh my god, lace?! Just as I was about to create a “Wedding” board, I came crashing back to reality: I’m a 20-year-old student. I’m not getting married anytime soon. I have no desire to get married anytime soon, lace or no lace.
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me And from what I can tell, I am not the only girl who goes momentarily crazy on Pinterest. Many of my friends, both single or otherwise, seem to have these wedding boards. And I admit, it’s fun to plan for the future and maybe for your dream wedding, but every time I even consider creating a wedding board, I
imagine a current or future boyfriend coming across that board and freaking right out. Because how crazy is that – oh hey, we just started dating, but here’s my pre-planned wedding complete with antique, pink glass tea light centrepieces, just insert yourself here. Uh. If I was that guy, I’d bolt.
Are girls not realizing this? Sure, you may think you’re safe because your boyfriend doesn’t currently have Pinterest, and how would he ever see your craziness? But maybe you have his cousin on Facebook, or his brother’s girlfriend? And one day she comes across your “14 top veil choices” and jokingly comments that “that Tonaya is absolutely crazy – your brother had better watch out.” Game over. How do you come back from this level of suddenattack commitment? Moral of the story: hide your craziness in plain sight. For example, I save documents and lists on
my laptop with titles like “Grade 12 English vocab,” and I’ve also created a favourites list in Explorer called “Tonaya’s Biology 140 Project.” My Word Documents can be personal journal entries, poetry or really just anything I don’t want others getting into. And my Bio project? Well, it’s everything that you’d find in a crazy wedding board. Clever, hey? Tonaya Marr is always available to give advice when it comes to appearing more sane in public than you actually are. You can get hold of her at tonya.marr@gmail. com or send her a tweet @ TonayaMarr.
When medicines fail to quell heartburn DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 25. I have a serious case of GERD. I’ve been put on four different medicines. They aren’t working. I also have palpitations throughout the day. I’ve been told by doctors and nurses that there is nothing dangerous about them. I’d like to know if this true. -- J.C. ANSWER: GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disorder -- is heartburn. It’s the upward spurting of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the swallowing tube, a place that is not able to cope with these corrosive juices the way the stomach is. Eliminate or go easy on foods that make GERD worse: citrus fruits; tomatoes; onions; carbonated drinks; spicy, fatty or fried foods; chocolate; peppermint; and caffeine. If you’re overweight, weight loss lessens GERD symptoms. Don’t lie down after eating. Don’t smoke. Sleep with your head, chest and
stomach on a slope by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. That position keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Don’t wear anything that constricts your stomach, like tight pants or tight belts. Medicines called “proton pump inhibitors” nearly completely turn off acid production. Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Proto-
nix, Aciphex and Dexilant are their names. If you still have heartburn while on these medicines, it’s OK to use an antacid along with them. If medicines fail, other causes of heartburn need consideration, things like bile reflux or eosinophilic esophagitis. If these conditions aren’t found, then surgical treatment of GERD is an option that’s open to you. Palpitations mean a thumping or racing heart. They can be felt as a thud in the chest. The cause is an extra beat -- or more correctly, a premature beat -- one that comes before it should. The beat after a premature beat is delayed.
During the delay, the heart fills with more blood than usual, and that causes a thump in the chest when the heart empties. Premature beats are almost always innocent and need no treatment. You can believe your doctors and nurses. The booklet on GERD explains this common malady and its treatment. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONO-
HUE: Can you give me insight into the HammanRich syndrome? My father passed away from it. -- L.R. ANSWER: I can tell you only a little, because only a little is known about it. It’s a lung injury that comes on suddenly, with damage to the lung air sacs (the alveoli) and the spaces between the air sacs, the interstitium. The cause is unknown. Because of such destruction, oxygen cannot get into the blood. Patients are severely short of breath, have a fever and they cough. The only medicines are ones to keep the person going as best as possible. There is no cure medicine. Even with
a ventilator, death happens to more than 60 percent of these patients. It’s an illness that reminds doctors that they don’t have an answer for every malady. You and your family have my condolences. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 201 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

After Dark gets lucky for latest show They are making their way west, back to where they started. Zachary Lucky and his band are on its way back to Saskatchewan with a stop in Estevan next Friday. Lucky is the latest artist set to perform at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum’s After Dark Concert Series April 27. His latest album, entitled Saskatchewan, was released on March 6, and their Canada-wide tour kicked off March 8 in Regina. For the last few weeks, Lucky and his band have been touring the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Lucky spoke to The Trader from
New Brunswick, before heading to Ottawa for a Thursday night show. “I’ve placed more weight on the touring aspect,” said Lucky. “But I am feeling more pressure to spend more time writing, rather than being a touring minstrel.” With recently released material however, Lucky is set on touring for the time being, and will continue west from here on his way to Vancouver Island. The young artist from Saskatoon is the grandson of John and Eleanor Lucky. His grandfather went by Smiling Johnnie Lucky when
he and Eleanor travelled the country performing for audiences. Lucky noted that his grandparents were among the first musicians to travel to the Arctic Circle to play. He said that “living up to the legend” of his family would certainly be enough to be considered successful. When he was gathering material for his latest release, he found a song written by his grandmother and asked her if he could record it for his album. With the album being centred on his home province, he thought it was necessary to include her song, Saskatchewan, as

Zachary Lucky the final track. While they tour, Lucky said they are keeping a schedule that allows for a few days off here and there so they don’t get burned out. While striking a balance between writing and touring isn’t always easy, he said the experience does generate plenty of fodder for new song ideas when it finally is time to go back home. “You’re taking in these experiences and images into your mind,” he said. “When you get back, you open the capsule of things
you’ve taken in and let it out. Sometimes there’s a song in there.” On this tour they have played a in a variety of venues, but Lucky said those places where their music can be heard are great for them. The art gallery will be one of those quieter places. “We strive to play in places where people hear our songs.” Lucky’s style of music is influenced by what he listens to, adding that because he writes with an acoustic guitar, folk is very natural
to him. “I think a lot of that comes from what you enjoy listening to. I happen to enjoy folk music. It comes naturally to me. I am trying to find a niche to fit in and find a sound that is my own.” Lucky will be appearing at the art gallery with Carly Maicher, who performs piano and vocals on his new album. Should women’s hockey be a sport in the Winter Olympics?
He She He She Said
By: Tonaya Marr
By: Jordan Baker
It’s an Olympic year, and while the Summer Olympics are what will reign supreme in 2012, we have decided to look ahead to the future of women’s hockey in the winter program. There are a lot of defenders of the women’s hockey game, as well as a lot of those who vehemently believe there are a number of issues surrounding female hockey as a global sport. The problem in part with both sides of this argument is that they are right. Certainly as the equal opportunity guy I am, I think women should be able to take part in every category of sport that men do, even ski jumping. That will be coming in 2014. Many of the detractors aren’t against women in hockey because hockey is the only men’s sport in the world and women have no place on skates without toe picks. They argue that there is no competition. There is only one question to be asked about the women’s tournament: will the Americans beat the Canadians? But the tournament isn’t about who wins the most medals and is crowned the most athletic country on the planet for the next four years. It’s about competition, but it’s also important as a vehicle for peace and global co-operation. The Olympics aren’t about winning. I know it’s very PC to say that participation is all that’s important. There are others who say giving participation ribbons doesn’t teach anything, and they’re right, but it still isn’t all about winning. Sport is really all about performing to one’s best. Everybody has limitations, and of course we are going to celebrate those athletes who appear to be the exception to that rule. Female hockey players should be given the opportunity to perform the sport they love for their countries. That’s really what is important here.
Personally, I don’t watch women’s hockey. I barely watch men’s hockey, and I find the female version to be a fair bit slower. This doesn’t mean I’m against the sport, and I’m definitely not against it being an Olympic sport. For one, while women’s hockey may not be as fast-paced as men’s, it’s still entertaining and has a following of dedicated fans. Second, isn’t hockey growing more popular among young women? It makes sense to assume that women’s hockey will only improve as time goes on and more five-year-old girls around the world start picking up sticks. Finally, it’s already an Olympic sport and it’s way too late to get rid of it now. If there are women willing to play, countries that are able to put together teams and the facilities to host the tournament, it would be crazy to get rid of women’s hockey now. That would be a huge step back from equality. It would spur a lot of controversy. Women who aren’t even feminist would feel moved to support their female peers, whether or not they care about hockey. We are women and not men, so we band together when men do things against women. Also, no Olympic Games wants to be remembered as the Games that got rid of women’s hockey and enraged the world. A million starving infants could be saved by that same decision-making committee, and they would still be the jerks who axed women’s hockey from the Olympics. So women’s hockey should stay. They’re not hurting anybody, and any event that Canada is almost guaranteed to win is a good event in my books.

Oh, who are the people in your neighbourhood? In your neighborhood, in your neighbourhood. Say, who are the people in your neighbourhood? The people that you meet each day? I’m sure you all remember that song that was made famous by the Muppets. It’s a great song that children can sing along to. Throughout the song, the Muppets skillfully highlighted different people that we all meet (the postman, the brave fireman, etc.) in our neighbourhood. As a child I loved singing that song. Today, I was out for my morning walk with our dog, and as usual I found myself thinking about a number of things. I find my morning walk is the one time of the day where I have enough space to think, meditate and pray. I love the walks, especially in the spring, when the sun is up earlier than the dark winter mornings. Every day another bird joins others in song, green returns
Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life to the landscape palate and the chill in the air seems to lift day-by-day. It truly is a time of awakening. As I walked through my neighbourhood this morning, waving to those on their way to work (or otherwise), I began to think about my neighbours and how blessed our family is to live in such an extraordinary community. I’m not sure if our neighbourhood is unique or not, but it certainly feels like it is. Just this past weekend many of the neighbourhood kids gathered together to play a huge game of man tracker. The kids had all their contraptions, toys, nerf guns and the like out and ready for action. At one point I found my son and a few other boys making their own bow and arrow. I was amazed at how far they could actually fly. Their imaginations were running wild, and kids were everywhere. In our neighbourhood, we also like to get together to eat. So, on any given
weekend, you can be sure that one family will open their doors and invite everyone in, simply to relax and enjoy one another’s company. In a nutshell ... I really like our neighbourhood and so this morning, with a smile on my face, I found myself singing The People In Your Neighbourhood, and it felt good. I hope you have people in your neighbourhood with whom you have connected. If not, may I encourage you to take advantage of this lovely spring weather and enjoy one another. If you have kids, encourage them to get outside and play, challenge them to let their imagination take over and to involve some of the neighbour kids in a game (this is better than any computer game can offer). Life is too short for us to stay boxed up in our homes - and for us, as Canadians who are saying goodbye to winter, it’s time spread our wings and enjoy the season ahead of us. As I sign off I ask, “Who are the people in your neighbourhood?” Susan J Sohn getreallive.com

She’s sunk. Now let her be I didn’t think it would be possible, but last week finally slaked my thirst for all things Titanic. It was a gigantic media effort, especially on the History Channel and National Geographic Channel over the past week, culminating in a wall-to-wall marathon on Sunday. If you didn’t catch the inside baseball in the last sentence, “Gigantic” was the original name planned for the third ship of the Olympic class of ships, of which the Titanic was second. It was eventually named Britannic, since names implying big were no longer chic when you just lost the biggest ship in the world to an iceberg. The Great War meant Britannic was converted to a hospital ship. Remarkably, it sunk in Greek waters in almost exactly the same manner
as Titanic, striking a mine in almost the same spot as the famous iceberg, and going down in the same manner. Having no patients yet, most, but not all, of the crew made it to safety. Thirty people died on that one. But you wouldn’t know that from last week’s coverage. Nearly every piece went out of its way to forget that it was the Olympic, built before Titanic, that originally set the record for White Star Line as the biggest ship in the world. Titanic was ever so marginally larger, as in fractions of a per cent. National Geographic has been eating out on Titanic ever since Dr. Robert Ballard found it in 1985. I distinctly remember that edition of the yellow-bordered mag, despite being only 10 when it came out. I can visualize almost every photo in it. But
all the coverage I saw last week conveniently forgot one thing: finding the Titanic was a cover story for the U.S. Navy. Ballard’s initial mission was to investigate the wreck of the U.S.S. Scorpion, a nuclear submarine that sank in October 1967. I can’t count how many times those on screen described it as the worst maritime disaster ever, which is patently false. There might be some Spanish ghosts in the English channel that have something to say about that, after their armada was sunk, or
some Mongol invaders who never made it to Japan in 1281. The loss of Wilhelm Gustloff during the Second World War by a Soviet Navy submarine, with an estimated loss of about 9,500 people in January 1945 remains the greatest maritime disaster ever, if you believe Wikipedia. Some of the coverage was a little surreal. Director and National Geographic “explorer-in-residence” James Cameron brought together a blue ribbon panel to discuss the ship going down in his two-hour long “last word”

British society. It didn’t go well for the director, though, who, after a spat with the deeply Nazi screenwriter and a few accusations of decorated soldiers being more interested in bedding actresses than filming, found himself hung by the Gestapo for treason. That was news to me, thanks to the National Post. So now that the big anniversary is over, and we have probably learned absolutely all there is to learn about Titanic, maybe the world can give it a rest. That’s strange coming from someone so passionate about it that he wrote a column last year about seeing a chunk of its hull in Las Vegas. But 100 years on, I think it’s time Titanic rested in peace. on the subject. But most of the special focused on how the ship fell apart on the way down, as if that really made a difference to anyone. But it was interesting to hear Cameron talk about how they got some things wrong in his movie, even if it was actually mostly very small, technical items. I did appreciate the British production Rebuilding the Titanic, in which a team, using 100-year-old methods, did everything from reconstructing parts of the first-class smoking room to forging an anchor. That was a rare case of something new. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but the Nazi Titanic is recorded on my PVR. Lindsay Tedds, an economics professor at the University of Victoria, says Porisky’s theory has absolutely no grounding in the law, which is unambiguous that anyone earning money in Canada must pay income tax. TORONTO - More than 50 per cent of the Canadian parents surveyed for a study on online safety admitted they secretly access their teenager’s Facebook account. According to a survey conducted in 11 countries by security company AVG, the global average of snooping parents was 44 per cent. Still, Canadian parents were less likely to spy on their teens than those in the U.S. and Spain, where 61 per cent admitted to monitoring Facebook covertly. When accounting for the results from all countries, mothers were more likely than fathers to do the cyberstalking. About 49 per cent of moms admitted to doing so, compared to 39 per cent of dads. INTERNATIONAL ROME - An official says an Italian tourist who
was kidnapped in 2011 by an al-Qaida-linked group in Algeria has been freed. Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said in a statement Tuesday that Maria Sandra Mariani has been released and her family notified. Mariani was kidnapped on Feb. 2, 2011 in Algeria’s remote southern desert while on a visit organized by a travel agency. Suspicion immediately fell on al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, which is active in the region and has often kidnapped foreigners for ransoms. Two weeks after the kidnapping, an al-Qaida spokesman claimed responsibility in a broadcast on Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya during which Mariani also spoke. KABUL - Afghanistan’s president raised another condition Tuesday for a long-awaited strategic partnership with the United States: The accord must spell out the yearly U.S. commitment to pay billions of dollars for the cashstrapped Afghan security forces. The demand threatens to further delay the key bilateral pact and suggests
that Afghan President Hamid Karzai is worried that the U.S. commitment to his country is wavering as the drawdown of foreign forces nears. The U.S. already pays the vast majority of the budget to train, equip and run the Afghan security forces and expects to do so for years to come to compensate for Afghanistan’s moribund economy. BAMAKO, Mali - Soldiers arrested the head of one of Mali’s biggest political parties Tuesday, hours after a former prime minister was detained by military personnel, officials said, deepening questions about whether the military is in control of the nation despite a handover of power to a civilian leader. The coup leaders who ousted Mali’s democratically elected president last month recently handed over power to an interim civilian leader, but the junta’s leader also has said he will play an important role in Mali’s political future. The European Union delegation in Mali issued a statement Tuesday expressing concern about the arrests, calling for “an urgent clarification and their immediate release.”

Moyer approaches 50 (age, not MPH) Important aspects of a 50-year-old’s life usually involve a comfortable chair with a footrest, playing with the grandchildren, and maybe, for recreation, a little golf on the weekend. For others, it’s semi-retirement. Jamie Moyer, it could be argued, is already in semi-retirement. He’s a baseball pitcher who will turn 50 this November and he works only once every four or five days. Moyer, though, is a pitcher in the starting rotation of the Colorado Rockies and when he wins his first game of the 2012 season, he will become the oldest player to ever win a game in Major League Baseball history. What the ageless wonder is even doing in a major league uniform is a question most baseball fans are asking. He was thought to be far too old for the professional game two years ago when, at 47, he hurt his elbow so badly it needed surgery. Time to call it a career, right? Hardly. Moyer, about whom it’s joked his fastball speed and his age are about the same number (his fastball actually hits about 80 mph), underwent Tommy John surgery, missing all of the 2011 season, and vowing to come back as a 49-year-old. The Rockies invited him to camp and while somewhat of a novelty because of his age in spring training, he surprised almost everyone except himself by using his guile and pinpoint pitch placement to earn the No. 2 spot in the Rockies’ rotation. “I’ve learned to appreciate things a little bit more and understand things a little bit more without trying to get too sentimental or too deep into it,” Moyer told MLB.
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist com. “I’m just really appreciating the opportunity that I’ve been given.” Moyer lost his first two regular-season starts with the Rockies, but both outings were decent and there has been no indication the Rockies will send him to some 50-and-over slow pitch league anytime soon. With 267 career wins, it’s unlikely Moyer will threaten to win 300, the number which almost guarantees a player entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He’d need a couple of 17-win seasons to reach that hallowed number, which is unlikely, considering he’s only topped that figure twice in his 25-year career. On the other hand, what’s to stop the ageless wonder from winning nine games a season for four more years and getting to 300 that way? After all, he’d only be 53. • Jim Caple of ESPN. com, on soft-tosser Jamie Moyer still pitching at age 49: “The scouts no longer point the radar gun at him; they just count “one-Mississippi, twoMississippi ...” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) WorldHerald, affixing the blame for 49-year-old Jamie Moyer’s 0-2 start with the Rockies: “The AARP magazine-cover jinx.” • Norman Chad of the Washington Post, on 49-year-old Colorado pitcher Jamie Moyer: “In a world of Ferraris, Moyer is a horse-and-buggy; in
a world of smart phones, he’s a rotary dial.” • Chad again: “Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck threw 32 touchdown passes while maintaining a 3.5 GPA last season, but his football stats were goosed by playing Sacramento State and his academic stats were goosed by taking Introduction to Car Washing.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “At least six racehorses have been named after the Jets’ new backup quarterback: Tebowing, Tebowmania, Tebow Go, Tebow Gator, Tebow Time and Tebows Big Play. And if they want to make them all run faster? Just name the next one Here Comes Manning.” • Another one from Dickson: “Mike Tyson told a Detroit radio station, ‘If I were president, I’d put Pacquiao and Mayweather in jail if they refuse to fight.’ At least I think that’s what he said. I briefly passed out while pondering ‘President Tyson?’” • David Letterman head writer Eric Stangel on Twitter: “Five runs (allowed) in three innings. Apparently “Yu Darvish” is Japanese for “A.J. Burnett.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “The Toronto Triumph are one of four Lingerie Football teams that will compete in the new Canadian division. Toronto Triumph? There’s two words that don’t usually go together.” • NBC’s Jimmy Fal-
lon, on the Mets’ 4-0 start: “I don’t want to say it’s surprising, but today the Mets tested themselves for steroids.” • Perry again: “The Yankees got off to an 0-3 start this season - their worst since 1998. Just for old times’ sake, the ghost of George Steinbrenner tracked down the ghost of Billy Martin and fired him.” • Celebration Church Pastor Joe Champion, to AP, on why he invited Tim Tebow to address 15,000 worshippers on Easter Sunday: “In Christianity, it’s the Pope and Tebow right now. We didn’t have enough room to handle the Pope.” • NBC’s Jay Leno, with bad news for Tebow: “Now there’s rumors that the church has been talking to Peyton Manning.” • ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, on why he’s happy for the start of baseball season: “I was getting sick of paying only $2 for a beer.” • “When Gregg Williams eats a chocolate Easter bunny,” tweeted Eric Stangel of the shamed ex-Saints defensive co-
ordinator, “he goes for the head first, then the outside ACL.”

Canadian water polo hit with loss NATIONAL TRIESTE, Italy - Canada’s quest for a London Olympic berth in women’s water polo took a hit with a 10-2 loss Tuesday to defending world champion Greece. Emily Csikos and Monika Eggens scored for the Canadians, who are 1-1-1 going into a matchup with Brazil on Wednesday to cap round-robin action at the Olympic qualifying tournament. The Netherlands leads Group B at two wins, no losses and a tie, followed by Greece (2-0-0). Kazakhstan and Brazil have two losses apiece. The Canadians need to finish top four at the nine-country tournament to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. That will be determined April 20 in the crossover matches between the top four in each group. BRNO, Czech Republic - Canada hit another road bump at the world
under-18 hockey championship, losing 5-3 to the powerhouse Americans on Tuesday. Frankie Vatrano’s goal 6:39 into the third period stood up as the winner in a tightly contested game. The Americans finished on top of Group A and earned a bye directly into the semifinals. Canada will face Russia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. TORONTO - Luke Schenn is joining Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship for the third time in four years. The Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman accepted an invitation to the tournament on Tuesday. Schenn is the fifth Canadian blue-liner to sign on for next month’s event in Helsinki, joining Maple Leafs teammate Dion Phaneuf, Jay Bouwmeester, P.K. Subban and Marc Methot. Eleven forwards and two goaltenders have also committed to the team.

Canada opens the world championship on May 4 with a game against Slovakia. TORONTO - The upcoming World League event at the Ricoh Coliseum will be a significant event for the Canadian men’s volleyball team as it returns to the elite 16-country tournament for the first time since 2007. There’s a chance it could also serve as an Olympic warmup. Canada can qualify for the London Games with a victory in the eightteam NORCECA (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) men’s continental Olympic qualification tournament May 7-12 in Long Beach, Calif. INTERNATIONAL MUNICH - Mario Gomez scored in the 90th minute Tuesday to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. Gomez’s 12th goal of this year’s competition boosted Bayern’s hopes of becoming the first team to play the Champions League final at its own stadium and earn its fifth title. Franck Ribery opened the scoring in the 17th minute for Bayern Munich and Mesut Oezil equalized in the 53rd. The second leg is next week in Madrid. DENVER - Baseball’s old man is still fending off Father Time. Jamie Moyer showed there remains a place for a vintage lefty in a young man’s game as the 49-yearold became the oldest pitcher to ever win a major league contest. He threw seven strong innings and Dexter Fowler hit a two-run homer to help the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Go nuts for almonds Of all the things to love about almonds, this one should really get your heart pumping: Just a handful of almonds a day could help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. That’s good news for just about everyone, as cardiovascular disease holds its spot as the leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S. Research shows that a diet high in heart-healthy foods

Almonds also are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. A study published in the June 2005 Journal of Nutrition showed that consuming whole almonds, including the skin, doubles the antioxidant intake. Just 1 ounce (22 almonds) packs more protein than an egg and more than 3 grams of dietary fiber. This same portion of almonds provides about 160 calories and the high protein content staves off hunger. Almonds also are a rich source of riboflavin, magnesium, manganese and copper. Shelled almonds may be whole, sliced or slivered with skin on, or blanched with the skin removed. Look for dry-roasted almonds that contain no additional ingredients like sugar or preservatives. Store them in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place to prevent them from going rancid and absorbing odors of other foods. Almonds will last several months in the

always a new adventure to catch the scene below. Your kids may squeal, “Where’s our house? Is that the Mississippi River? Wow, look at all the cars on the freeway during rush hour!” Not even Disney makes a ride like this. When you soar above the clouds, pull out this handheld toy and let it keep you entertained until the peanuts and pretzels arrive on your tray table. It’s a maze made using simple supplies including a tiny bead, bendable straws for barriers, and a plastic CD case. Here’s how to make a maze toy before your trip: 1. Open a CD case and remove the contents. Cover the bottom of the case with a sheet of heavy construction paper or craft foam. Cut to size and glue in place. 2. Be maze architects. Set the CD case in front of you. Determine where the “START” entry point and final goal will be near the bottom and make dots with a marker as a guide for construction, or simply write “START” at the top and “FINISH” at the bottom of the game board. To create a path for the game, sketch a route on the board
with a pen from “START” to “FINISH.” 3. Arrange different cut pieces of bendable straw lengths on the game board using the drawing as a guide. Include several dead ends along the way for a challenging course, and leave ample space for the size of the bead you choose to roll through the course. When you are satisfied with your design, glue the straw segments in place. Let dry. 4. To play, set a bead at “START,” snap the case closed and let it roll. For an extra challenge, time the contestants with a stopwatch. When you really get the hang of it, try going through the maze without looking, using verbal cues from siblings, or Mom and Dad. Extra idea: Construct the game with a tiny bead that goes through the bendable straws instead of around them. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 2012
Thank you
One wave, 84 surfers • It was British doctor and author Alec Bourne who made the following sage observation: “It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated.” • In 2007, a world record was set off the coast of Brazil when a single wave was caught by 84 surfers. • Have you ever heard of a book called “Never Again” by Doug Nufer? Probably not -- it’s not on any bestseller lists and hasn’t been reviewed by any notable critics. It’s quite possibly unique in literary history, however; in its entire 192 pages, not a single word -- even basic words such as a, an, the, of and for -- is used twice. • If you were to stack up a million $1 bills, they would weigh about one ton. • The Twist dance craze in the 1960s changed the culture in America and spread around the world. Most people don’t real-
ize, though, that the song “The Twist,” which started the fad, wasn’t originally sung by Chubby Checker, though he was the one who sent the single up the charts and has since been irrevocably associated with the dance. The song was originally written and performed by an R&B singer named Hank Ballard. A deejay in Baltimore saw teenagers dancing to Ballard’s song and called Dick Clark, host of “American Bandstand.” Clark loved it and invited Ballard to perform the song on the show, but it didn’t work out. Instead, Clark found someone else to perform the song: Ernest Evans, who changed his name to Chubby Checker. It made his career. • Colonel Sanders started selling chicken when he was 65 years old, and his only goal was to make $1,000 a month. *** Thought for the Day: “It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is, I can’t remember if it’s the thirteenth or the fourteenth.” -- George Burns

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 2012
California Faience Bowl
h
WINE & BEER KITS NEW!
Lounge Cocktail Kits by
Orchard Breezin Variety of cocktail Áavours including:
•Pina Colada • Margarita • Mojito • Long Island Iced Tea We carry it all:
• Corkscrews • Aerators • Novelty bottle holders • Decanters • Glassware & more! New bottles that are screw top caps, no more corking!
Q: I recently received a California Faience bowl from a relative who told me it was from the 1920s. I can’t find anything about the company in any of my reference books. Can you help me? -- Laura, Earth City, Mo. A: California Faience was a brand that was started in about 1920 by William V. Bragdon and Chauncy R. Thomas at their tile shop in Berkeley, Calif. Pieces of their pottery are generally marked “California Faience” with a die stamp and are quite collectible. Typical prices are ashtray with stylized dog design in orange matt, $225; and burgundy gloss bowl, $250. *** Q: I have a set of Elsie and Elmer coffee cups that were given away as premiums by the Borden Company. They are mint. -- Milton, Albuquerque, N.M.
A: Elsie was introduced during the 1930s as a mascot for the Borden Company. In 1940 she “married” Elmer, who began promoting Borden’s glue. Together they had Beulah. Elmer and Elsie appeared on dozens of products, including, of course, your coffee cups. I suspect your set of four are worth in the $12 to $20 range. *** Q: I have a set of cuff links that originally belonged to a riverboat captain who worked on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The set is in a leather case stamped “Currier & Ives by Squire” and are quite elaborate. Do you have any idea of what they might be worth? -- Michael, Ormond Beach, Fla. A: Eugene Klompus is an expert and collector. His contact information is P.O. Box 5970, Vernon Hills, NJ 60061; genek@justcufflinks. com; and www.justcufflinks. com. *** Q: I have a pocket watch that is marked “I.W. Co.,
Springfield, ILL.” The watch is quite heavy and requires a key to engage the spring. What can you tell me about it? -- Dean, Brutus, Mich. A: The Illinois Watch Company was founded in 1872 in Springfield, Ill. In 1928, the company was purchased by the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, Pa. To determine the value of your timepiece, you should show it to a competent jeweler. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. Questions of general interest will be incorporated into his column whenever possible. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Stopping a leak from toilet base Q: I read your advice to Christine H. about figuring out where a puddle of water at the base of her toilet was coming from. You said that if no other source of the leak could be detected, such as from the inlet valve, she should contact a plumber to replace the seal at the base of the toilet. Why can’t she just tighten down the bolts on either side of the toilet base? This might fix
The
the problem and cost zero dollars. -- Kent C., Atlanta A: That’s certainly worth a try, since it really doesn’t cost anything. But be careful that the bolts (or really, the nuts securing the bolts) aren’t tightened too much, as they could crack the porcelain base, requiring a complete replacement of the toilet. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, a plumber should come in, at least in the case of Christine H. For hearty do-it-yourselfers who have some experience repairing pipes or replacing faucets, replacing the wax toilet seal can be done in an afternoon or less. And the quicker
it’s done, the better, as the leak isn’t just causing an inconveniently wet floor; it could also be affecting the subfloor and causing silent water damage. To replace the toilet seal, you’ll need a new wax toilet ring, some plumber’s putty and a strong helper. Turn off the water at the shutoff valve, usually located on the wall behind and below the toilet tank. Flush the toilet, then remove as much water from the toilet bowl as possible, first using a small cup and then a sponge. Next, detach the inlet tube from the shutoff valve and from the base of the toilet tank.
Unbolt the tank from the toilet base and carefully lift off. Then, unscrew the nuts attaching the base of the toilet to the floor. With your helper, carefully rock the toilet base back and forth to loosen the seals and caulking around the base, then lift the toilet base up. Next, tilt the toilet base so you can access the bottom and wipe away all the old putty and wax. Clean the fl oor and the area around the drain pipe as well, so it’s completely dry and free of putty. Put the replacement wax ring on the floor around the drain pipe. Then, place plumber ’s
putty around the foot of the toilet base -- one way is to create a putty “rope” and press it around the perimeter. With your helper, lift the toilet base and position it over the wax ring and drain pipe and bolts. Ease it into position by rocking and pressing the base down so that the new ring sits tightly in place. Attach the nuts to the bolts on either side of the base and tighten carefully. Reattach the tank to the base, attach the water supply line to the tank and shutoff valve, and turn on the water supply, checking to make sure the supply
line connection doesn’t leak. Finally, trim away the excess plumber’s putty from the foot of the toilet. HOME TIP: Does the toilet base need to be sealed to the floor? Yes, for a number of reasons, and because it’s required by building code in most states.
