THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2012

Cheers to the anonymous person who returned a wallet out of a shopping cart to Sobeys customer service. I hope your kindness works tenfold through our community.

Jeers to CP the oil transload facility still located in the middle of Estevan against the wishes of everyone, including city council, fire department and the citizens.

Cheers to all the dog owners who respect and love their animals.

Jeers to the landowners who are holding back the new truck route project by expecting to get paid commercial prices for their land when they paid agricultural prices to buy it.

Cheers to CN Railroads for having their oil transload facilty located between Estevan and Bienfait in a safer rural area. Cheers to Mayor St. Onge for suggesting that the government should go ahead with the truck route and expropriate the land needed at a fair market price. Cheers to the landowners north of Estevan who have completed a deal with the Department of Highways so that our much needed truck route can get underway. Cheers for the City of Estevan’s larvicide program that combats mosquitoes. Stick with it. There are clear, positive results.

Big Jeers to the local power company for hiring a Manitoba roofing company. Jeers to the crews working on installing a storm sewer line at King Street. They have all of Hillside blocked off. Block off a couple of blocks where you’re working, and leave the other area open. Stupidity of the highest degree.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

Collage looking for new ownership An event that celebrated the growing diversity of the Energy City will be missing from this year’s schedule. The Collage Multicultural Festival is looking for a new group of organizers after two successful years dedicated to the many cultures that now make up Estevan and the southeast. Previously run by the Chamber of Commerce, the festival was deemed too far outside the chamber’s mandate in order for them to continue to organize it. That doesn’t mean the chamber’s executive director Michel Cyrenne doesn’t want to see the festival return under new management. “The Chamber of Commerce feels it’s a very good event for the community and especially in light of the fact that we’ve got a growing immigrant population in the community, said Cyrenne. “It’s definitely an event that we do want to see continue. At the same time, he said they felt it was something that didn’t really fit into what the chamber is supposed to be doing. The organization is one that is primarily focused on business activities and acting as a voice for the business community. They work with the City of Estevan and RM of Estevan in terms of investment attractions and tourism development, but they don’t typically handle cultural activities. “All of those factors are all really related and intertwined with business, he said. “We do understand that the reason this immigrant population is becoming more predominant in Estevan because of the growing business community, but this is

The Collage Multicultural Festival was held in Estevan for the past two years, but is now looking for a new group to take over the event planning. Grants are available, but if someone would like to organize for next year, applications for those need to be in soon. an event that is definitely cultural in nature rather than business-oriented in nature. Cyrenne noted that even though they will not be the sole organizer anymore, because of the role businesses play in bringing more immigrant workers to the city, they would like to have continued involvement in the festivities. “We’d like to partner on the event, just in terms of being able to promote it to the local business community, added Cyrenne. “We do feel there is somewhat of a distant tie to the business community. The business community is the one bringing the people in. We definitely would like to be involved and provide assistance in any way we can. Cyrenne said that both years the event was held, it generated a profit. He noted there are some time sensitive aspects to organizing the

event, and if somebody were interested in preparing the festival for next year, the time to act is now. “If it were to be done in 2013, you definitely need to start looking at it now, he said. “There is some urgency because there are grants that need to be put in place, and those grants are typically put in place the early part of the fall. He said they have all the material and information from the first two events, and they would be happy to hand it all over if there is another group who wants to take it on. “We’ve got a manual that is a step-by-step guide on how to put Collage on, so that’s in place already. We would, without any question, give that to whoever was looking after the revived event, if that were the case, said Cyrenne. There certainly may still be a desire for Collage in Estevan, as he said they received a positive

response for the first two festivals. “The first time Collage was put on I think people were surprised, more than anything. They were impressed by what was able to happen in our small community in a quick amount of time. Just the scale of the event was quite impressive, and the learning experience ‌ the experience to learn how many different cultures there are in our community and how large of a group of people it really is. It’s a lot more than people might realize, and it’s amazing how many different countries and cultures we have present here in Estevan.â€?

Tracking down ages with technology There are many ways to date somebody. There are things that put us into a certain age group and a certain time. These aren’t things that tell generations apart but can identify people within just two or three years of each other. Music has a big role in placing us at one point in time. It’s not what music we listen to, but how we listen to it. I know what cassettes and CDs are, even eight tracks and vinyl, which are making a comeback, and while most are really before my time, CDs aren’t. Even so, I have bought maybe a handful of CDs in my life. It’s strange what one or two years can mean for people because my sister, who trumps me by just two years, has all kinds of CDs. It’s not that she listens to music anymore than I do. Two years is all it takes to make people either jump to the latest tech or cling to the past. I made one of my coworkers, who is three years older, feel much more aged and crotchety by the revelation that I’ve bought only three CDs because those things were already dead when I started listening to music. I was 14 when the first iPod was released. That wasn’t even remotely

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers close to being the introduction of the MP3 player, even though it is the most successful. That’s what I grew up with. Individual music files is what I like and what I’m used to. Now, all physical media is outdated and will soon be gone with the greater use of cloud computing throughout the household and Bluetooth connectivity to all your other devices. It certainly isn’t the same for everyone, but just two years separates how my sister and I grew up listening to music. Cellphones date us as well. I don’t know many eight-year-olds, but I would guess that most in Canada have smartphones. I’ve recently had cousins in elementary school who had them. They may have been 12. Regardless, when you bought or received your first cellphone dates you. Mine was my first year of college, which would have been 2006. It’s not

that long ago, but now it would be unheard of to go through high school without your own cellular device, and soon kids will get them on their first day of kindergarten. If you got your first cellphone before heading to school, you’re under 23. Back in 2006, Facebook was still only available to students and by invitation only. It wasn’t until my sister’s second year of university that the social-networking site was even open to universities in Canada. I can even recall her complaining when it was opened up to the world that everyone would ruin it. Her concerns were only a little off base. The network works best as a limitless hub of people, just like the Internet that powers it. When and how you got on Facebook also dates you. I had to sign up with my student e-mail address after receiving an invitation to join. If you weren’t invited to a party called Facebook that was attended by just your immediate friends, you are either younger than 23 or older than 28. These are only examples that date my generation, but we all have them. If you didn’t understand most of what I was talking about, that may date you.

Agricultural diversity can be beneficial Agricultural diversification has long been an interest of mine, as regular readers will recognize. The idea of creating more options in terms of generating a positive cash flow has always seemed like a very common sense approach for a sector where traditional core production products — wheat, barley, cattle and hogs — are given to some pretty large and relatively long-lasting price dips. The farming founders of Canada had diversification at the heart of their operations, with mixed farms the norm. It was a built-in insurance plan of sorts. If a barley crop came off in bad condition, it could be fed to what were hopefully higher valued hogs. If bad prices hit the cattle sector, they were still a fertilizer source for cereal crop land. And intertwined within the mixed farm philosophy was a full larder with your own meat in the freezer, veggies in the cellar, and eggs and milk in the cooler. The concept of mixed farming has all but disappeared today, at least in terms of major farms. Specialization has taken over, and one can argue whether that is good in terms

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist of management expertise as it relates to production. Making the farm profitable is not necessarily made easier in terms of being so specialized. We have seen the effect of extended low prices basically gutting the hog sector in Western Canada, yet it was not so many years ago the region was considered profitable when it came to producing pigs. The combination of seemingly longterm low grain prices, abundant room in terms of isolating barn units, and the need for local job creation all seemed to make Saskatchewan ideal for pig barns. But the big barns struggled as grain prices and wages climbed, and pork prices stayed low. Of course diversification, as it was basically sanctioned by the province’s agricultural departments, proved to be hit

or miss - was actually more miss than hit. The list of failures is long ... ostrich, emu, fallow deer, sea-buckthorn, and to lesser extents borage and fibre hemp, and the list goes on. The problems are largely a lack of processing facilities, which never got off the ground because production levels or market potential never made a facility viable. One shining example of a new sector that arrived and has managed to grow, albeit a slow growth curve over many years, is the bison sector. The big animals have found a niche in a world where consumers want lean, low fat meat, and bison provide that. Bison also do well on fringe land — land that is not suited for regular cultivation and crop production — meaning the animals fit with the idea of sustainable farming without impacting land use in terms of producing grain for human consumption. That will be increasingly important to consumers as well. While not a major agricultural commodity compared to beef or pork, bison are an example of diversification which has worked, and that sets the sector apart from most.

Sociology: a story of love and hate Dear Sociology 301, When I first heard of you back in the winter, I thought you sounded pretty cool. I asked around, actually, wanting to find out what made you tick, and lots of people told me you were great. Like with all great relationships, I looked you up online and what I found said you were helpful, available and a little easy, so I figured “Hey, all of those things are just what I’m looking for!” I sought permission from your department head so I could see you. I’d never taken a class like you before, so he had to make sure I was up to your standard. But lucky me, permission was granted, and I was going to

be able to see you for five hours every week! I was thrilled, you sounded so awesome. Going to the classroom the first day, I had butterflies because I was so nervous. I hung on to every word spoken and took careful notes of all the important things you wanted me to know. I was attentive. But slowly, week by week, you became less interesting. I don’t know what it was, but I just didn’t want to see you anymore. I showed up, sure, and I continued to take notes, but my heart just wasn’t in the relationship like it had been in July. You had grown dull, boring. I wanted something

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me better, something that kept my attention, and I thought of the classes I’d taken last fall, but I continued our weekly meetings. The first mid-term came, which was wonderfully open book. I passed with minimal studying and flying colours. I think our relationship rekindled a bit there, because I remem-

bered why I was so taken with you in the beginning: you were easy. But then the second mid-term approached, and I knew I wasn’t prepared. All my note taking wasn’t enough to make sense of your endless rambles. What did I actually know of society, the course material, since I barely listened in

class, choosing to read a novel in between writing down your notes. So I studied hard, not wanting you to know I was losing interest. I wanted you to believe that I still cared. And I passed, again, and I don’t think you knew just how little I wanted to see you anymore. I think you realized it was over when I skipped class one day. I’m sorry, I didn’t want to hurt you, but I couldn’t bring myself to be there. The final was today, and I have to say, I’m not going to miss you, Soc. Sure, we had some fun times, some great moments of discussion and humour, but we’re just not made for each other. I’m

going to go back to journalism classes in the fall, I think you should know that. No, we can’t hang out anymore – you’re just not right for me. And despite my grades, I don’t care about you. I faked the whole relationship. I’m sorry. Sincerely, Tonaya Marr Tonaya Marr is a 20-year-old woman living in Regina. Is using your phone at the dinner table still bad manners?

He She He She Said

There is a restaurant somewhere in the United States offering a five per cent discount to diners who check their phones at the door. I haven’t reprimanded anyone for using their phone at the table in a long time, maybe years. Certainly four or five years ago I recall friends taking out their phones when a group of us were out for dinner and they would be greeted with a chorus of, “Put your phone away! It was the height of arrogance and a major social faux pas at the time, and while I still think it is in incredibly poor taste to do so, the court of public opinion says otherwise. It still isn’t cool to have your phone go off in a movie theatre or in someone’s backswing, but if you want to text at the table, go ahead. I’ve been in a situation where I’ve been at a table with a friend, and they are on their phone, not talking, just using it. They were probably on Twitter or playing Scrabble or shooting birds at things. I looked around wondering if people would consider him the lame one for ignoring the person he’s sitting with, or me for not having anything to do while my cohort occupies himself in my presence. Maybe I should have brought a book to the restaurant, so I had something to read while he was busy with the phone. Maybe they think I am just so boring and unintelligent that I can’t keep the interest of my friend, and he must resort to busying himself with his phone while out for a meal. People used to look at the person on the phone as the jerk, but maybe now I’m the jerk who can’t hold my friend’s attention for an hour. Phones are now part of the table setting. They are an extension of us, and no matter how much I dislike it, I no longer feel like I have the moral high ground were I to tell someone to get off their phone at the table. — Jordan Baker

For my mom’s sake, I’m going to concede that using a cellphone while eating a meal is rude. If you’re sitting around with your family, your friends, your co-workers, etc., you have no business being on your phone. You should be smiling and making conversation, since you’re there to spend time with one another. While I agree with this, I also can think of situations where a cellphone is perfectly fine during a meal. When I eat alone, for example, I like to be on my cellphone. I like to be constantly entertained, so when I sit down with my turkey sandwich Monday to Friday at noon, I like to text and use social media. Keeps me from getting bored, since I actually have no idea what to do with downtime. Another good time is when you’re eating alone in public. It’s one thing to be home alone and texting your sister; it’s another to be sitting in a packed airport restaurant with nothing to do but stare awkwardly at the family beside you. Plus, I’ve found that if you’re on your phone, people will be less inclined to bother you. Sorry if that’s rude, but I would rather pretend to text someone than have a conversation when there’s the danger of having spinach in my teeth. Sometimes you’re going to have to use your cellphone during a meal just because everyone else is. Have you ever been out with colleagues and they’re all so plugged into their iPhones that you find yourself texting your mom just so you look busy, too? Ya, neither have I. But really, leave the phone in your pocket when you sit down for a family supper. If it’s Christmas Eve and you’re gathered with all the aunts and uncles you don’t see every day (though sometimes it feels like you do), leave your phone on the couch. Lock it, obviously, so your sister can’t take 12 photos of herself and then change your contacts’ names to Harry Potter characters. But don’t have the phone on your lap. If everyone followed this rule, no one would be texting you during Christmas supper because they’d be enjoying time with their families as well. — Tonaya Marr

A healthy hospital means a healthy city Once again the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation is aiming to satisfy its wish list. It takes a lot of work and a lot of money to keep St. Joseph’s Hospital running smoothly. One of the foundation’s jobs is to help make sure the professionals in the hospital have the equipment they require to work to the best of their ability. Roxy Blackmore, the foundation’s director, noted the wish list includes necessary items identified by the employees and one way for people to contribute is through the foundation’s cash calendar lottery draw. They have been selling tickets for the last two to three weeks and will continue selling until the end of the summer. Blackmore said more than 40,000 patients went through St. Joseph’s doors in 2011, an increase of about 10,000 from the year before. “That’s wear and tear on equipment, and we need all the help we can get, she added. Their goal is to cre-

ate awareness, funds and involvement at the hospital. “Any money that is made through fundraising and donation goes right back into St. Joseph’s, so it stays local, and that’s the goal of things like the lottery, said Blackmore. “That’s why I’m constantly trying to tweak things to make the biggest bang for our buck as a community. She said getting the community to support in something fun like the lottery is a great way to get people involved in the hospital, while also helping to cover new equipment. “That money goes into buying state-of-theart equipment, which then can retain the best medical professionals, the best specialists, to come to our city to work, so they have the best tools to do their job, said Blackmore. “You want to keep them. They can only work to the best of their ability with what they’ve got, and we want to offer them the best so they can stay here. We want to have what they need to work with and do their jobs. Blackmore has orga-

nized the cash calendar lottery draw the past few years, but for 2013, she has revised the distribution of prizes. In previous years, the draws ran all year long but come January, it will be one-and-done with a whirlwind of giveaways throughout the first month of the year. The draws will kick off with a $3,000 prize on New Year’s Day and finish with a $10,000 prize on Jan. 31. There will be smaller draws from Monday to Friday throughout the month, with eight $1,000 draws and 26 $100 draws. “It’s very different. There’s a lot more money going out and in a shorter span of time. The grand prize is up, and the tickets are cheaper, said Blackmore. Previously there were $100 draws each week throughout the year, with a grand prize at the end of the year. “I thought maybe this would be more appealing, and certainly we’ve sold a lot of tickets. They’re going really fast, she added. “It’s more money for less,

Roxy Blackmore actually the tickets are less. (They’re) great for gifts, especially around the Christmas season, (the prizes are) almost immediate. If someone’s going to win, it’s right away in January. Blackmore noted that keeping a healthy and

properly run hospital is something that benefits the entire city. “Everyone that donates is in it for a healthier community all the way around. They have previously raised about $40,000 through the lotteries, but Blackmore likes to shoot high, with a goal of more than double that amount. “I like to reach high,

she said. “If I didn’t do that, what fun would it be? It’s fun to reach a goal, and it’s better to have the community behind you reaching a goal. If we all work together, that’s when it really gets exciting. Tickets may be purchased by contacting Blackmore at the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation office.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2012

Is it worth going to reunions anymore? This past weekend my wife and I were scheduled to attend the 100th anniversary reunion of Saskatchewan Youth Parliament in Regina. It was a big deal in our lives, as that’s where we met. Most of our friends for the past 20 or so years we knew through Youth Parliament. Many of them found their wives or husbands through the organization. (Sssshhhh! Don’t tell that to any current members! They might get scared off.) Unfortunately, our son came down with one of those mild childhood ailments that was contagious enough that we couldn’t leave the kids with anyone

else, and therefore our plans to attend were scrubbed. It was bittersweet seeing the various news articles about the event and not being able to attend. I guess our tickets can be considered donations. Most reunions aren’t newsworthy, but when you have an organization that includes the likes of Diefenbaker, Calvert and Goodale, the media takes notice. Two of our close friends did attend. Steven was a former premier of Youth Parliament, and Michael was a former speaker. Michael also met his wife Angela at SYP, but she was at home with their kids and

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile couldn’t attend. Angela was a former premier. Michael reported back that while we would have enjoyed ourselves, the only two people we would have known were Steven and him. We had spent a week at Michael’s place earlier in August, and Stephen had joined us there during the visit. So while we had

missed out, we hadn’t missed much. This reminds me of my own 10-year high school reunion. I was one of the main organizers of the event, having been on student council when I was in high school. This was done in the days before social media. It took a lot of effort to track down most of the approximately 300 graduates of Yorkton

Regional High School’s class of 1993. I probably spent four months doing that off and on. E-mail sure helped, but there was no such thing as Classmates. com or Facebook. I had to use a Yahoo group as a form of mailing list. Remember those? Most people don’t. All told, only about 60 people showed up. It was interesting, but definitely not Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion. I was especially disappointed that a lot of the people who were still in Yorkton chose not to attend. Maybe they didn’t see the point. Next year the 20-year reunion is coming up. Our class president of 1993

asked me a while back if I wanted to work on organizing it. No thanks, I replied. After all, I don’t live or work in Yorkton, while he has actually assumed his father’s old job as the student counsellor/spirit guy with the Regional. With Facebook these days, getting the word out should be a snap. Just set up a Facebook page, and start inviting former classmates. It should go viral enough to reach nearly everyone (at least those with a Facebook account, which is nearly everyone) in a few days. Easy peasy. But then again, one of the initial allures of joining Facebook in the first place was reconnecting with old friends. Surely by now most of the people that you have any desire to keep in touch with from the old days are already on your friend list. Long ago Facebook ran out of new “friends to suggest to me, both literal and Facebook-style. If they’re not on your list by now, you probably didn’t care a hoot about them in the first place. Indeed, one of my Facebook friends, a friend of a friend, just posted a photo of her 20-year reunion. There were 34 people in the picture for a school of similar size to mine. The question is, do I want to go through the effort of organizing, or attending, a reunion when such a small fraction of people are likely to attend in the first place? I guess we’ll see when the time comes next year. Maybe I’ll set up a Facebook page.

No charges laid in PEI immigration case Provincial SASKATOON - The Saskatchewan Appeals Board has a bit of a tree house tiff on its hands. A family in the Montgomery neighbourhood of Saskatoon has enjoyed a backyard playhouse for decades, but neighbours want the large structure removed. The disagreement began when a tree that once obscured the playhouse from view was cut down. Neighbours complained that the playhouse was an eyesore and also infringed on their privacy because it now overlooked their yard. A Saskatoon board sided with the tree house family. But city administration has sent the issue to the appeals board for a ruling because the structure is higher than allowed. National TO R O N TO - T h e Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume certain Pure Flavor brand pre-cut vegetables because they may be contaminated

with listeria bacteria. The recall affects Pure Flavor brand’s Freshly Cut Grillers in Premium Medley, Asparagus Blend, Rustic Blend and Steak Topper trays with expiration dates of Aug. 11 through Aug. 26. The products, made by Leamington, Ont.-based Pure Hothouse Foods Inc., have been distributed across Ontario. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the products so far. Food contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria may not look or smell spoiled but can cause listeriosis. *** EDMONTON - Alberta’s distracted driving legislation has nabbed a two-wheeled texter. Edmonton police say they’ve charged a motorcyclist with numerous offences after they caught him sending a text message on a cellphone. Officers signalled the driver to pull over, but he instead sped away and hit an oncoming vehicle. The motorcyclist fled

on foot, but was eventually arrested nearby. Wayne Aucoin, 43, of Edmonton is charged with criminal flight, criminal hit and run, disqualified driving, texting while driving and numerous other provincial traffic offences. The province’s distracted driving legislation is almost one year old. *** CHARLOTTETOWN - The Canada Border Services Agency says it hasn’t found sufficient evidence to lay charges following an investigation into Prince Edward Island’s troubled immigration nominee program. The agency says an investigator’s report was completed last November and it has concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to support charges under the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Last September, the federal Immigration Department referred allegations that the immigration program was marred by bribery to the agency and the RCMP. The agency says it now considers the matter

closed. The RCMP says it is still conducting its investigation and expects to submit a report in a few weeks. The accusations surfaced after a former employee of the program alleged that senior provincial officials were bribed in order to expedite immigration applications. The provincial nominee program allowed foreign investors to fasttrack receipt of Canadian visas by providing about $150,000, some of which was invested in P.E.I. companies. International DETROIT - U.S. safety regulators are investigating the Nissan Versa subcompact car because an air bag may fail to inflate in crashes. The probe affects about 100,000 Versas from

the 2012 model year. A cable can get pinched in the steering column and cause the problem, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The pinched cable will set off a warning light on the dashboard. Such investigations can lead to recalls. The Versa has not been recalled so far. The safety agency opened the investigation after getting data from Nissan. *** FRESNO, Calif. - A popular lodging area in Yosemite National Park could be linked to a rare rodent-borne disease that has killed a California tourist who stayed there this summer, officials said. in a canvas tent cabin about 100 feet from him on overlapping days has become seriously ill, park officials said. The virus was found in the feces of deer mice in the family friendly lodging area of cabins, according to tests by the Centers for Disease Control and state health officials. “There’s no way to tell for sure, but state health officials feel they may have contracted it here in Curry Village, park spokesman Scott Gediman said. The man, who was from Alameda County in the San Francisco Bay area, would be the first person to die from the disease contracted in the park, though two others were stricken in a more remote area in 2000 and 2010, officials said. *** MOSCOW - Russian hackers have attacked the website of a Moscow court where three members of the Pussy Riot punk band were tried and sentenced to two years in jail. The Russian offshoot of the loose-knit movement known as Anonymous tweeted that the website of the Khamovniki district court was down Tuesday morning. According to search engines’ cached pages, the hackers posted Pussy Riot’s latest song ridiculing President Vladimir Putin on the website, along with calls to release the band members. The website was not available later Tuesday. The three women were punished for an irreverent stunt in February at Moscow’s main cathedral in which they asked the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from Putin, who was elected to a third term two weeks later. The trial caused an international furor.

Time for answers nigh It is now a legitimate question: “What’s wrong with the Saskatchewan Roughriders? We’ve heard it at times over the course of the summer of 2012, but it never seemed like there was too much wrong with the Green & White. Their perfect play during a 3-0 start seemed too good to be true and it was unreasonable to expect it would continue for the rest of the season. However, as we close in on the halfway mark of this CFL campaign, even the most optimistic of Rider Priders has to be concerned over the state of this team as they seem to have collapsed into a tailspin. Sunday’s 24-5 loss in B.C. was the club’s fourth consecutive defeat and the team appears to be reeling. How couldn’t they be? The club’s last win was in Week 3, a 23-20 triumph over the Lions in Regina. Yet, remarkably, had the Riders won in B.C. on Sunday, they would have held top spot in the West with the season series advantage over the Lions. Instead they are 3-4, tied with Calgary for third, and are technically in fourth in the division as the Stamps hold the tiebreaker. So, all is not lost and head coach Corey Chamblin continues to be positive despite the slide. “I looked at it as we came out aggressive and stayed aggressive with playcalling, Chamblin said after the match. “They (B.C.) are a veteran group and they just came out stronger. We’ll grow into that role. “Once again this team fought to the end. The biggest thing is, there are couple of units who played better than they have in the past. We need all three phases playing together and I know we’ll get there. As is usually the case, a handful of plays dictated the outcome and some seriously questionable calls took the Riders out at the knees at

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider critical times. We can safely say the Lions are the CFL’s best team and the Riders went toe-to-toe with them for most of the contest until a 55-yard touchdown by Arland Bruce broke their back in the last minute of the third quarter. “The game was in reach near the end but a few plays late broke it open, Chamblin explained. “It was close for a long time at 7-3. So what ails this team right now? That’s tough to say. The offence certainly didn’t seem to be a problem as they averaged close to 30 points per game in the first six contests, but their one measly field goal in Vancouver easily stood out as their worst offensive showing of

the season. Defensively, they relentlessly pounded Lions quarterback Travis Lulay, but the reigning league MVP kept getting back up for more. He’s just that good, and that tough. In the final analysis, all that matters is that there are 11 games left to play and there’s still plenty of time to turn things around. The Riders have held the lead in every one of their first seven games and it’s clear this team is as good as any in the league. However, now is the time to find answers to the questions because they can’t afford to squander divisional games any longer. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)

Signing Hamilton could be risky move Based on statistics alone, Josh Hamilton should be one of the most sought-after free agents this winter in the history of Major League Baseball. But any general manager offering what a player of Hamilton’s calibre should normally command – something in the Albert Pujols/Prince Fielder stratosphere ... $200 million or so for nine or 10 years – would either have to be partly off his rocker to do so, or have extraordinary faith. Hamilton, you see, is an enigma. A team signing the Texas Rangers star won’t really be sure what it is getting. Will it get the “good Hamilton, the 35-home-run slugger who bats .350, as he did in 2010 when he was the runaway winner of the American League MVP voting? Or will it possibly get the “bad Hamilton, the drug- and alcohol-addicted loser whose life spun so miserably out of control that his career stats have

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist a three-year void (20032005), when the booze and drugs caused him to hit rock bottom. His fall was dramatic; his comeback has been wonderfully heartwarming. Two hundred million dollars, however, is a big investment, no matter how much money some of the big players (Yankees, Dodgers, Angels) might have to throw around. Since getting his life under control, and his terrorization of American League pitchers has been the norm, Hamilton has had a couple of alcoholic “slips. And you know what they say about alcoholics, of which Hamilton is admittedly one: “One drink is always too many; and 100 is never

enough. Baseball MVPs in their prime (Hamilton is 31), who are free agents are usually followed around by general managers driving Brinks’ trucks until they agree to take hundreds of millions of dollars from one of them. But a strange thing happened to Hamilton this summer. After living up to his new image by batting .395 and .344 in April and May, he slumped horribly, hitting only .202 during June and July. At one point, perplexed Rangers’ manager Ron Washington even benched his slugging outfielder. In all probability, Hamilton will need a number of suitcases to carry all the cash some hopeful

Canada out of Little League World Series National TORONTO - A male fan died in a hospital after going into cardiac arrest at Thursday’s game between the Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox. Play was halted for four minutes in the seventh inning while the fan received CPR and was carted off on a stretcher. Ambulance sirens could be heard outside the stadium as the fan was carted off, still receiving CPR. Following the game, Toronto Police Services confirmed the fan had died in a hospital after collapsing. The name of the fan was not released. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the person who was taken out of here tonight, Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis was the first player to notice the commotion in the stands, and alerted umpire Mark Wegner to what was going on. *** TORONTO - Toronto FC manager Paul Mariner hopes new defender Darren O’Dea can help stop the bleeding. The 25-year-old Irish international will make his debut Saturday when the Reds host Sporting Kansas

City, and it comes at a time when Toronto is struggling with defensive breakdowns, especially on set pieces. Mariner was livid with his squad on Wednesday after allowing a corner kick goal in the 21st minute of a 2-2 draw with Portland. On Friday, he ran multiple drills on dead ball situations as new face O’Dea assumed his role as the backline’s new “general. “It’s quite obvious the team needs to stop conceding so many goals, said O’Dea. “There’s a lot of publicity about set pieces and in football it’s tough enough keeping clean sheets without conceding set pieces. We’re trying hard not to do that and hopefully we can start tomorrow. Mariner has long preached the importance of a “big boss on the defence and in O’Dea, who has 14 caps for the Irish and spent six seasons with Scottish League perennials Celtic, he believes he’s found it. *** SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Christopher Koeiman drove in two runs with a tying sacrifice fly and Mychellon Jansen hit a tiebreaking solo homer as the team from Willemstad, Curacao, eliminated the Canadian representatives from Hastings-Vancouver 4-3 on Monday at the Little

League World Series. Trailing 3-1 entering the fifth, Curacao had runners on second and third when Koeiman hit a fly ball to left with one out. Carter Kada-Wong fell backward to make the catch, but both runners had enough time to score. Jansen then homered to give Curacao the lead for good. Reliever Rallison Bentura pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings to get the win. International DALLAS - A Texas woman is suing the Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones, saying her buttocks was severely burned when she sat on a bench outside Cowboys Stadium. In a lawsuit filed last week in Tarrant Count, Jennelle Carrillo said the black marble bench was in direct sunlight on a hot August afternoon before a Cowboys scrimmage last year. A weather official says the high temperature on that day was 101 degrees. Carrillo’s lawyer, Michael Wash, said his client didn’t know the extent of the burns until after receiving medical attention. The lawsuit claims she was hospitalized and underwent skin grafts. The lawsuit claims there were no warnings

about sitting on the benches in hot weather. *** LONDON - Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been fined 45,000 pounds ($71,000) by the English Football Association after being found guilty of improper conduct over a Twitter comment about Chelsea rival Ashley Cole. An independent commission found Friday that Ferdinand was guilty of referencing ethic origin and race when he re-tweeted a user’s comment that referred to Cole as a “choc ice, a slang term perceived as meaning black on the outside and white on the inside. Ferdinand argued the term instead means someone who is being fake. The comments, posted

on July 14, came after Cole gave evidence in court defending Chelsea teammate John Terry who was on trial for allegedly racially abusing Ferdinand’s younger brother, Anton, in a match last year. Terry was found not guilty. *** NEW YORK, N.Y. - A federal judge in Austin, Texas, threw out Lance Armstrong’s lawsuit against the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Monday, a decision that allows the agency’s drug case against the seven-time Tour de France winner to move ahead. Armstrong, who repeatedly has denied doping, claimed in his lawsuit that USADA lacked jurisdiction and its arbitration process violates his constitutional rights. %HIRUH

6HH :KDW

Spa

U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks dismissed the lawsuit as speculative. “With respect to Armstrong’s due process challenges, the court agrees they are without merit, Sparks wrote in a 30-page order. “Alternatively, even if the court has jurisdiction over Armstrong’s remaining claims, the court finds they are best resolved through the well-established system of international arbitration, by those with expertise in the field, rather than by the unilateral edict of a single nation’s courts. Armstrong can try to overturn Sparks’ decision by going to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. He also can agree to proceed with USADA’s arbitration or accept its sanctions.

Take your oats out to dinner While oatmeal is a wonderful way to add fiber, grains, nutrients to your diet, most folks think of oatmeal as a breakfast food. It’s time to take oatmeal beyond breakfast. Oatmeal is a whole grain because it contains all of the parts of the oat grain, including the bran, endosperm and germ. The interesting thing is that when we eat the regular oatmeal most of us grew up with, we aren’t eating the grain in its original form. We are usually eating rolled oats. Rolled oats have been steamed and flattened. That process decreases the cooking time so old-fashioned oatmeal can be prepared in 10 to 25 minutes. Quick-cooking oats that can be prepared in 3 to 5 minutes have been cut even more finely to reduce cooking time. Some people prefer steel-cut oats. The primary difference between steel cut oats and rolled oats is the shape of the grain. Steel-cut oats are not flattened -- the grain is cut into thirds and then packaged for sale. When preparing steel-cut oats, it’s best to use 4 cups of water to each cup of oats. The cooking time for steel-cut oats is 30 to 40 minutes. Steel-cut oats have a chewy texture and hearty flavor.

All oatmeal is a good source of fi ber, magnesium and thiamine. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, iron and copper. Oatmeal carries a health claim on the food label because of the fiber content. The health claim is that oatmeal -- along with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol -- may reduce the risk of heart disease. Oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber, which acts as a sponge in the digestive tract to help remove cholesterol from the body. Adding oatmeal to these delicious Salmon Cakes boosts the nutrients and adds a delicious texture to the dish. The Yogurt Dill Sauce complements the Salmon Cakes and is the perfect topping if you prefer to serve the Salmon Cakes on a bun. SALMON CAKES AND YOGURT DILL SAUCE

Use bolts to anchor pictures to wall Q: I have to hang some heavier pictures, and I’m a little confused by all the choices in different kinds of bolts. What options do I have? -- Frank in Tuscon A: Depending on the weight of the item you’re hanging on the wall, a

variety of bolts are available -- but the most common are expansion bolts or anchors (also known as Molly bolts, for some reason), and toggle bolts. Both kinds of bolts are helpful in anchoring somewhat heavy objects to drywall when a stud can’t be located or

used. Expansion bolts have an exterior plastic sheath, which is straight when inserted into a hole drilled into the wall, but expand behind the wall once placed. They’re designed for heavy objects like large framed pictures, mirrors or shelves.

Toggle bolts have metal wings that unfold once inserted on the other side of the drywall, providing a sturdy backing for much heavier objects like small cabinets. To use an expansion bolt, mark the spot on the wall where you plan to hang a picture or heavy item. Drill a hole at the width specified to fit the expansion bolt. With the metal screw inserted fully into the expansion sheath, push the bolt through the hole or gently tap in with a hammer. Turn the screw

head clockwise until it’s tight -- this action expands the sheath so that it sits snug against the wall. Unscrew the metal screw from the expansion bolt sheath and mount the picture by inserting the screw through the picture’s hanger or screw hole and back into the expansion bolt. To use a toggle bolt, first drill a hole in the wall at the width specified. Unscrew the metal flange (the spring-loaded expansion unit) from the metal screw. Run the screw through the screw hole or the picture’s hanger, then screw the metal flange back onto the screw, on the opposite side of the hanger or screw hole. Pinch the flange closed with one hand and push it

through the drilled hole while guiding the picture into position. Once the flange is all the way through, pull the metal screw until you can feel the flange pressing against the back side of the wall. Tighten the metal screw until it and the picture are secure. HOME TIP: Metal or wooden studs are located approximately 16 inches apart on average.
