I mean special because I would need people who could spend time with me for exercise and to be consistent with my training, because if you give me an inch I will take a mile. Hi, my name is Summer, my sister Sophie and I have been here for a long while. We were dropped off outside the EHS last Oct., we went up to get spayed but we were already done (it is too bad our previous owners didn’t leave a note stating that) that might have got us a home sooner. Anyway we are still here, spayed with vaccinations needing a home soon.

I am still looking for a mature employee who loves animals, phone or drop off or e-mail a resume right away. We still would love to have some new Board Members to replace the ones that have re-located or retired.

Money Problems? The annual dinner theatre show, organized by the Bienfait Lions Club, hosted three sold-out performances over the weekend. This year’s show, entitled Wild Mushrooms, was a comedy about a small family that gets mixed up with the mafia.

Dinner theatre gone wild The Bienfait Lions’ dinner theatre production of Wild Mushrooms was such a fun time for theatregoers last weekend, some took in multiple viewings. The performances were held Friday and Saturday evening, with a Sunday matinee at Weldon School in Bienfait, and the actors and crew said the shows went off without any glitches. “It went off like a hot knife through butter,” said Dwight Thompson, a Lion member who was one of nine cast members in the production and who has been part of the dinner theatre since its inception eight years ago. Thompson played the role of the conservative Italian father in the comedy featuring a caper that uses wild mushrooms to get the mafia off the backs of the little family from the Bronx. Thompson said the

cast was another great one this year, and the group is an easy reminder of why he loves to perform each year. “It is awesome. They are a great team to work with. It’s like a family,” he added. While some of the team has been part of productions for the previous eight years, others are first timers. Thompson noted that they always like to have newcomers join in an enthusiastic way, and this year they welcomed a few young locals into the cast. Along with the cast and five crew who handle set, sound and everything else with the show, there are about 50 other volunteers from Bienfait and Roche Percee who helped out with the food, drinks and all the other little jobs that needed to happen before, during and after the presentations. The performances saw sellouts on Friday and Sat-

The Bienfait Lions Club’s dinner-theatre production attracted close to 600 people over the weekend.

urday evening, with 440 tickets called for between the first two nights. The Sunday matinee typically sees fewer people attend, but Thompson said he was pleased to fill about 150 seats during the performance that was accompanied by afternoon pie, rather than the complete meal that was offered the two nights previous. He noted there were even some people who attended the Friday show who enjoyed it so much they came back to do it all over again on Sunday. That’s what the production crew strives for each year. They want to put on a show that is above all, fun. “We always try to do a comedy,” said Thompson. “We figure life is too serious, so why not have a laugh. We’re always interested in doing something like this. When you make someone laugh, they feel good.” They get their plays from the Samuel French Playhouse, and they order four or five to read through. Thompson said after reading them, they come to a consensus on which play they liked the best and then pay their royalties to start getting the show ready. The cast goes through about three months of rehearsals, which started in early September this year. Thompson said they have had a great relationship with the school since they started the dinnertheatre event. The school has been the show’s home each year, and in return some of the funds collected have been put back into the school over the years. He said the school has been very gracious to them, adding that “they always have their doors

open to us.” The simple, one-room set was a key ingredient in the Wild Mushrooms production. Having only one set meant that they didn’t need a large crew to move pieces in or out between acts, though in the past they have done productions that required multiple sets. The performances raise money for the Bienfait Lions Club, which in turn distributes it to different causes within the community. Thompson said there are currently no specific projects for which the money is designated. The amount raised this year has not yet been estimated, but he said in the past the average has been around $10,000 and is expecting a total around that mark.

Thirty days of mo growth To some people, though mostly women, Movember is the worst thing to happen to a month ever. It’s common knowledge that moustaches are part of that long list of things that never should have seen the light of day past 1989. For others, the campaign with men growing moustaches from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1 means helping men everywhere with prostate cancer, while increasing awareness of other men’s health issues. It’s true that moustaches are unpleasant for all but a select few masculine individuals, even though my Lanny McDonald imitation was less Yosemite Sam and more Bavarian beer wench, it’s the effort that counts. Since these numbers are being tossed around so much lately, I am among the 99 per cent who can’t grow an acceptable moustache. Prostate cancer has recently become a rite of passage in my family. My dad’s father and all his uncles have been diagnosed with the same ailment and then given clean bills of health. My dad was

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers diagnosed last year. We’re now waiting for his brothers to be found with the same problem any day now, with me and my brothers following in step in about 30 years. It seems like an inevitability at this point, as though we’re all just living with dormant prostate cancer, waiting for it metastasize when we we’ve properly ripened. It’s certainly not something that bogs me down, especially considering the win ratio my family has in this game. It does make me think about those who haven’t been as fortunate with the disease however, and feel that I have some obligation to spread the Baker luck. We aren’t quite so lucky in pretty much everything else, so I hope I don’t pass on any of our lesser

qualities. I certainly don’t wish to pass on my embarrassing mo-growing skills. With the growing prevalence of prostate cancer, not just in my family but elsewhere, it seemed necessary to do something. I could donate myself, but growing a terrible moustache was a much more satisfying option, encouraging those who liked, or more accurately laughed at, my child-like, lip sweater to give money in support of research and awareness of early diagnosis. I’ve been asked if I am going to keep these whiskers and I was even bribed by my sister who said she would donate another $20 if I kept what she called my “caterpillar” until she saw me again at Christmas. Well, no dice! If you are reading this now, the creepy crawly is gone from beneath my nose. I won’t miss it, but it was worth it, even if it just brightened the days of friends or family who were brought to tears at the sight of it. At least they donated a dollar for every tear that was shed.

Ag sector not protected from recession The world’s economy seems to be teetering on recession based on economies bathed in red ink and little idea of how to turn the tide. We see that south of our own border, where the American economy is stagnant and the ability of the federal government to influence it is greatly hamstrung by its massive debt and continuing deficits. The situation in Europe is not much better. We have seen the situation in Greece nearly topple a government, and threaten to shake the very concept of the European Union. The great concern with Greece is that the situation there may only be the first glimpse of a very large iceberg of problems, which could spread as other countries face financial problems, including Italy and Portugal. If one country were to default, it could result in a domino effect across Western Europe. If that were to happen, it could signal a recessionary period which will have effects for farming, which at present is experiencing good prices across almost every commodity from the Canadian Prairies. There are those who believe ag-

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist riculture might be buffered from a recession, at least past the short-term reaction of markets. According to a Western Producer story, “Perez Dominguez of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development told a meeting held during the Agritechnica farm show in Hanover last week that fears of food prices falling because of recession are unfounded because of fundamental strengths in global supply and demand. “There is increasing pressure on a limited land base, higher demands being placed on every hectare to produce more and the technology that has been improving yields is delivering smaller and smaller gains,” he said in the article. Dominquez is correct about the food requirements of a growing population having to come from what is basically a finite land resource.

The truth of the situation is one experts have pointed to for as long as I have been a farm journalist (22 years), as the reason agriculture has a bright future. For the most part, the good times for farmers have been fleeting during the last two decades, and the world population has climbed steadily over that period. While supply and demand is a commodity driver, the unwritten policy of low food prices in countries such as the United States drags on that driver. So too does the fact much of the demand lies with the poorest countries, which are not in a position to pay high prices regardless of the supply situation. That is a situation of world wealth distribution, something that is basically ignored when world leaders meet. Dominquez is correct in stating that agricultural commodities should be better able to withstand economic upheavals because they are essential to survival, and one day that will be the reality of things. But that may not be the reality just yet, so farmers will want to watch how the world economy reacts to the uncertainty that is out there.

Important lesson about love and life I went home last weekend for a 24-hour visit because of a mini mental meltdown. Fortunately I was cured by my mom’s rice crispy roll and a chat with Grandma, and I returned to Regina refreshed and ready to take on my final week of school. I also left with a whole new perspective on relationships and life. Now, I’m not going to name names, but I went on an adventure with a couple who are very close to me. These people’s names may or may not rhyme with Bike and Lacky. And they may or may not be closely related to me. But that’s not important. Because these nice people wanted to humour me in my fragile state, Saturday I was riding around with them, checking out the lack of Christmas lights in Estevan. As we’re driving along, Bike pointed out ev-

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me ery time we passed a house with a Christmas tree in the window. He was pointedly ignored by Lacky, who pointed out several other houses without Christmas trees. Apparently they’re in the middle of an ongoing battle over whether or not to set up their Christmas tree. This battle continued all the way from Pleasantdale to the Spruce Ridge area, then Trojan and Westview. Finally I asked Bike why he wanted to put up the Christmas tree, since they were in the middle of painting their house. It seemed rather inconvenient

laugh at each other (though one seems to do more laughing than the other) and it works for them. 4) Estevan needs to put up some more Christmas lights. Twinkle tours are rather boring when only one house in town looks festive.

to have a tree up when the house was swirling with dust. He replied that their youngest daughter wanted the Christmas tree up. He explained that he had to pick a side, so he chose to be pro-tree. I countered that he should just stay neutral in the matter. He considered it for a moment, then replied that staying neutral would be a good idea, because it would give him a stronger currency, though it was a lot of fun to needle Lacky. What I learned: 1) married people are funny. This is the same couple who

Give us more football please! I’m not much of a sports guy, but over the past two years I have watched more football on TV than the rest of my life combined. It’s not a lot, but it’s a start. I actually watched the Grey Cup from start to finish - which is amazing for a guy who is usually more interested in watching an election from the time the polls close to the concession speech of the loser (about the same length of time as a Grey Cup, by the way). The one thing I don’t understand is why do profes-

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile sional football teams only play one game a week? The National Hockey League has 82 games per team in a season, before the playoffs - a season unto itself. Major League Baseball

has 162 games per team in a season. They even play these things known as doubleheaders. Its post-season is a bit shorter than hockey’s, however. Each team in the National Basketball Asso-

ciation plays 82 games in a season. So why is it that football is apparently incapable of playing more than once a week? The NFL has 16 games in its season, and the CFL plays 18. Wouldn’t it be possible to play twice a week? And don’t tell me hockey isn’t as physical as football. Football doesn’t pay guys millions of dollars solely to go on the ice and beat someone’s teeth out for some perceived slight. There’s no “enforcer” in football. Although football players may have more mass, they don’t have nearly the speed, or these little clubs known as hockey sticks. They may crash into other players, but they never get cross-checked into the boards. With this burning question on my mind, I consulted the most impartial source I know - Wikipedia. Under the entry “American Football,” it says, “Many hours of preparation and strategizing, including film review by both players and coaches, go into the days between football games. This, along with the demanding physicality of football, is why teams typically play at most one game

Once a decade you get to host the Grey Cup? That’s a huge amount of investment for a little-used stadium, or as Regina is currently whitewashing it, an “entertainment centre.” I think if they double the number of games - playing twice a week, with an average of one home game every week, the entire league would benefit financially. Players could conceivably be paid more - which might help bring talent to the CFL. Venues would make more. There’s definitely an appetite for it. It sure would make it a lot easier to justify a new stadium, both here and in New Brunswick. Would there be more injuries? Likely. Would you have to expand rosters to deal with that contingency? Perhaps. Maybe the game might have to be modified in some manner to limit injuries, although that’s a long shot, and might take away from the secret sauce. Canadians love their CFL. Maybe we should love it a little more. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian.zinchuk@ sasktel.net

As for the physicality, see the hockey reference above, and come back after you’ve counted how many teeth you have left. I just cannot abide watching the supper news all week with the made up, spoon-fed stories about Riders practice. Oh, gee, Mr. News Director, what minor little detail or player should we focus on on Tuesday, because we still have three more newscasts to fill with bovine feces after that? Oh, look Martha! They ran a practice today! The NFL is an enormous money-maker. The CFL seems to have finally found its footing, and could benefit from an expansion franchise into Eastern Canada. Winnipeg has a new field, and Saskatchewan is strongly considering one. The problem is the economics of building a half-billion dollar stadium for, what, 10 home games - nine regular season, one exhibition? Maybe a few more if you’re lucky enough to do well in the playoffs?

Wise words to live life by This year I turned 41 and one of my dear Aussie friends sent me this article written by Regina Brett. Brett is a well known columnist and author and she was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for commentary in 2008 and 2009. In 2006, Brett wrote a column for The Plain Dealer entitled 50 Life Lessons, which has since been the most distributed column she has written to date, appearing on blogs as well as social networking websites like Twitter and Facebook. Brett has been misidentified as a 90-yearold woman possibly because the wisdom shared in these life lessons, seems to go beyond her years. The 50 lessons, listed below are definitely wise words we can all live by. As I head towards another year older I find myself reflecting on these points, wondering if I’m living them out or if in the coming year I need to apply more focus and be more intentional in my every day life. I hope you too, will find these wise words something you can latch on to and something to perhaps anchor you to what matters. Perhaps these words will resonate with you, like they have me. To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 50 lessons life taught me. - By Regina Brett of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio. 1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.

How much is an appropriate amount to spend on gifts for Christmas?

He She He She Said

Recent polls suggest Christmas spending for Canadians is going up from last year. An Ipsos Reid survey found that on average, Canadians will spend about $640 (last year it was $624) on Christmas gifts this year. In Saskatchewan, the average is expected to be closer to $680. Pats on the back aren’t required but welcomed at this time for that Prairie generosity. The He and She of this feature are not so well endowed monetarily speaking, so our numbers may not quite measure up to the lofty standard set by the rest of Canadians. I will be gracing my family Christmas with my presence, not just my presents, and that’s kind of the greatest gift of all, isn’t it? That gift alone will be more than my holiday budget. It might even be double my budget. Canadians are also likely to spend a total of $1,100 when accounting for other costs like travel, turkeys and endless bottles of liqueur, and anything else people spend their money on around this time of year. Knowing that will give me a little more wiggle room when it comes to buying gifts, and I’ve yet been asked to fork over a couple of bucks for my share of the turkey. The largest slice of the holiday pie will usually go to your significant other, whatever your situation may be, but that isn’t necessary. I suppose if you have children that may no longer be the case. Families do everything differently, but for me, we draw names. We draw names amongst me and my siblings, and we draw names for the larger group of aunts and uncles and grandparents. Those gifts usually come in at a reasonable expense, especially with the larger group that typically comes with the caveat of a $20 maximum. Most people in my family would feel bad if much money was spent on them so that makes for great Christmas shopping. The kids will pool some money for some nice gifts for my parents, but among the five of us, another $20 to $40 each usually suffices. Then you can turn to a mix of friends, co-workers, if your workplace does a gift exchange, and any acquaintances you feel obligated to give a bottle of Irish cream to. Adding it all up, I will probably be coming in between $300 and $400, though my math is terrible. That’s well under even Quebec, which should average $461 on gifts this year. I guess I just know how to budget shop.

I think this really depends on what your cash flow is like. For example, my Christmas gift budget as a student is comparably less than that of most people working full-time jobs, so obviously I can’t give amounts that apply to everyone. I wish I could say that good friends and family ranked higher on the money totem pole than significant others, but that isn’t the case. Boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives, all tend to receive the most expensive and elaborate presents during the holidays. I think it comes out of the fear of being outdone, at least in a lot of cases. Consider: your girlfriend hints that she went all out and bought you something fantastic for Christmas. You don’t want to get her something less impressive, so you splurge on a gift you figure will be as good, or better than hers. It’s weird that gift buying can become a competition, but it’s true. I think family are a huge priority, whether you’re in a situation that allows you to buy gifts, or if you’re making coupons for free hugs on Thursdays. I can’t imagine there is anything more important than family. I don’t think we take enough time in our busy daily lives to let our family know much we care for them. For example, my sister Kendelle texted me at 1:28 a.m. last weekend to ask me a question about her paper. Were I a good sister, I would have woken up and replied with helpful wisdom. Instead I chose to sleep, and she handed in a paper that may have been subpar. On Christmas I can give her a nice token of my affection for her. It might not be that better grade she initially wanted, but it’s something. Friends come next. It’s not because they’re unimportant; they definitely are. But friends tend to be more understanding that you may not have the time/money to find them the perfect gifts. It’s also worth pointing out that while you maybe don’t take the time to appreciate your family throughout the year, you appreciate your friends. You drive their drunk butts around on weekends. You give them a place to crash when they get locked out of their apartments. You pay their volleyball registration fee when they bail on your team. So to recap: boyfriend, sister and friend, in that order. Enjoy your shopping!

National TORONTO - Nine out of 10 Canadian middle school students are meeting expectations in math, with those in Quebec and Ontario leading the pack, a new report suggests. Results for the second edition of the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program indicate nearly half of Grade 8 students have surpassed the math requirements for their level.

The test is administered every three years to thousands of students across the country and measures whether they have attained the math, reading and science skills they should for that grade. *** DELORAINE, Man. - Police in Manitoba say a four-year-old girl has been shot, apparently after her five-year-old brother got a hold of a firearm. International LONDON - A man arrested and then cleared of murder charges has told a committee investigating Britain’s press that tabloids destroyed his reputation with false front page stories. Christopher Jefferies told Britain’s press ethics committee that the negative coverage of him was so widespread that some people still assume he is a “weird character” who should be avoided even though he was cleared of wrongdoing. Jefferies, a landlord,

was arrested last year by police investigating the murder of his tenant, Joanna Yeates. Another man has since been convicted of the crime. Jefferies said he felt he could not go out in public because of the smears. The inquiry, led by Judge Brian Leveson, plans to issue a report next year and could recommend major changes to Britain’s system of media self regulation. *** OSLO - Confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was insane when he killed 77 people in a bomb and shooting rampage in Norway, and should be sent

to a psychiatric ward instead of prison, prosecutors said Tuesday. A psychiatric evaluation ordered by an Oslo court found that the selfstyled anti-Muslim resistance fighter was psychotic during the July 22 attacks, the country’s worst peacetime massacre — which means he’s not mentally fit to be sentenced to prison, prosecutors told reporters. The report, written by two psychiatrists who spent a total of 36 hours talking to Breivik, will be reviewed by a panel of forensic psychiatrists before the court makes a ruling on whether Breivik is legally insane.

time to move on

Finally! This topsy-turvy, rollercoaster of a 2011 Canadian Football League season came to a conclusion Sunday in Vancouver with a thriller of a Grey Cup. The B.C. Lions vanquished the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-23 before a sellout crowd of over 54,000 fans at B.C. Place. And that was the feeling I got from a Roughrider perspective; finally it’s over. In a year that felt like two seasons in duration, this 5-13 campaign for Canada’s Team is finally behind us. It’s time to look ahead. The next news you’ll hear from Riderville will be the hiring of a new head coach. There was a moratorium on any team announcements during Grey Cup week, but the stadium was barely empty on Sunday when the news broke that the Toronto Argonauts have an agreement in place for Scott Milanovich to become their new sideline boss. You can scratch him

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider off the Riders’ list, and you can also be sure he was on it. General manager Brendan Taman has been remarkably tight-lipped about the whole situation but his list of candidates is rumoured to be at seven or eight. The popular notion in CFL circles is that Corey Chamblin, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator, will replace Ken Miller, making him the youngest coach in the CFL at 34 years of age. However any time I’ve asked Taman if he has decided on a coach, he says no. Taman and Chamblin worked together in Winnipeg and have a great deal of mutual respect for each other. And you can also be sure Taman won’t make this decision on a whim. He has just one year left on his contract so this is a pivotal move for all involved.

It’s not a slam dunk either. Taman said there will be no announcement until at least Christmas, adding that this is a thorough process that will also include talks with the Dickenson brothers, Dave and Craig, along with Richie Hall, Bomber defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke and a few others. It’s also a critical offseason for Saskatchewan. The club is eager to prove that this dreadful season was just a blip on the screen, and not a sign of things to come. There are a dozen free agents left to sign and the club also holds the number one pick in the CFL Draft. That needs to be a home run too. It is not only Rider fans that are pulling for this team to return to glory. The 2012 Grey Cup in Toronto has been a tough sell, we’re told, and organizers are hoping to see the Riders back in the big dance because that guarantees a successful Grey Cup. The Roughriders are considered the heartbeat of the CFL and along with their struggles this season, TV ratings went down by as much as 30 per cent. However this franchise has a lot of things going for it, not the least of which is the greatest fan base in sports who stick with the team through thick and thin. It will be very interesting to see how it all turns out. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)

Page 11

Obscurity no concern to Garrison, Panthers Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Nick Lidstrom are among the most famous names in the National Hockey League, but if you were looking to find the most obscure, you might not be too far wrong to suggest it’s Jason Garrison. Jason Garrison? Who? Exactly. You might be surprised to learn that Jason Garrison, a native of White Rock, B.C., who played Junior A in Nanaimo and then spent three years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, is one of the top scorers on one of the NHL’s best teams this year. That would be the Florida Panthers, of course. This fits perfectly with the obscure Garrison because of the NHL’s 30 teams, Florida is certainly among the most obscure, even to their dozens of fans in football-mad Florida. Garrison and the Panthers are rising at the same time, which is probably not a coincidence. When the U.S. celebrated its Thanksgiving holiday in late November, the Panthers had the best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference, a few ticks ahead of Pittsburgh, whose engine was revving again with Crosby back in the lineup. Florida was not the only relatively obscure team to lead a conference. The best record in the West at U.S. Thanksgiving was Minnesota Wild. Hockey fans all over North America - except perhaps in the hockey-mad state Minnesota - were yawning at the possibility of a Minnesota-Florida Stanley Cup final. But we digress. Back to Harrison ... sorry, Garrison. Jason Garrison. The 27-year-old, playing his second full season with the Panthers, led all NHL

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist defencemen in goals with eight, leaving Drew Doughty, Lidstrom, Dion Phaneuf, Dustin Byfuglien and other more famous defenders in the dust. He wasn’t alone with his scoring exploits from the blue line however, since five of Florida’s top nine point-getters were defencemen. The Panthers offensive charge was being led by castoff forwards Kris Versteeg and Tomas Fleischmann and goaltender Jose Theodore, a former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner with the Habs. The Panthers are guided by rookie coach Kevin Dineen, one of the early leaders in coach-of-theyear discussions. Dineen

had a great six-year run in the American Hockey League, winning 111 more games than he lost. Along the way, he nurtured guys like Jason Garrison, who are quietly - and quite anonymously - skating their way toward a possible flirtation with the Stanley Cup. • Comedy writer Jim Barach: The Houston Astros will move into the American League West from the National League Central division next year. The fans aren’t concerned about American vs. National. They are just glad no one has seen fit to put the team where they belong: In Double A. • Rick Reilly of espn. com, comparing the last

two Green Bay quarterbacks: “(Brett) Favre ... is Halle Berry in a bikini. But (Aaron) Rodgers is Halle Berry in a bikini carrying an ice-cold 12-pack and the keys to a free Maserati.” • This week’s groaner, from R.J. Currie: “Pius Heinz, a 22-year-old German, won the $8.72-million prize at the World Series of Poker. Once he got ahead, Heinz had his opponents playing ketchup.” • From Steve Harvey’s Bottom 10: “And, so, the number of sidelined quarterbacks grew, including Houston’s Matt Schaub (bad foot), Chicago’s Jay Cutler (bad thumb) and Washington’s John Beck (bad passes).” • Barach again: “The wife of an Illinois high school football coach was caught changing the grades of some of the team’s players. Remember when the economy was good and coaches could just reward

players with money under the table?” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “The Kansas City Chiefs signed Kyle Orton off waivers, and the Chicago Bears signed Josh McCown. That’s it, Brett Favre is officially ‘chopped liver.’” • After Dustin Brown of the LA Kings made YouTube history by hilariously squirting water out of the bottom of the bottle after holding it upside down, he tweeted: “Heading to the rink early today have to help the trainers mark all the water bottles with arrows.” • R.J. Currie again: “The Saints beat the Falcons in overtime after Atlanta got stuffed going for it on fourth down at their own 29. Can’t imagine a more questionable gamble - unless another guy agrees to marry Kim Kardashian.” • Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press, on the Tigers’ Justin Verlander

winning the AL Cy Young Award by a 28-0 vote: “Wow. If they can get 28 sportswriters to agree on something, how come Congress can’t work like that?” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times on recent NFL fines: “Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford’s fine for grabbing an opponent’s helmet and throwing him to the ground: $7,500. Bears receiver Earl Bennett’s fine for wearing orange shoes: $10,000. Moral of the story: Good thing for Stafford he wasn’t wearing orange shoes when he did it.” • Ian Hamilton of the Regina Leader-Post: “As part of their divorce settlement, Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has to pay his exwife Jamie $131 million. Through force of habit, the Yankees offered her $175 million.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

Chapman is coming to Estevan Virdenonon Tuesday, Friday, March December29 9 to out¿t you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the bene¿ts of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to ¿nd a good-¿tting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll ¿t somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that ¿t comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overÀow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go. YOU’VE TRIED ALL THE REST - NOW TRY THE BEST • NO UNDERWIRES • NO ELASTIC STRAPS • NO STRAPS FALLING OFF SHOULDERS • NO RIDING UP IN THE BACK

You can sign up for Chapman’s bra clinic by calling 1-800-254-3938 by December March 277 She doesn’t come into town very often so she advises booking as soon as possible

A tough week for coaches everywhere National ARLINGTON, Va. The struggling Washington Capitals have fired Bruce Boudreau, replacing him with London Knights coach Dale Hunter. The 51-year-old Hunter becomes the 15th coach in Capitals’ history. He is slated to make his debut behind the bench Tuesday when the Capitals host the St. Louis Blues at Verizon Center. The Caps currently stand eighth in the Eastern Conference with a 12-9-1 record. They are 3-6-1 in their last 10. Hunter, who played 19 years in the NHL, captained the Caps as a player and had his number retired in 2000. The Capitals announced the move Monday, less than a week after Boudreau reached 200 wins faster than any coach in modern NHL history. *** RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes have fired coach Paul Maurice for a second time. A replacement is ex-

pected to be announced later Monday. Reports suggested Milwaukee Admirals coach Kirk Muller was in line to get the job. Maurice’s second stint with the Hurricanes started in 2008-09 and included a trip to the Eastern Conference final that season. However, the Hurricanes have missed the playoffs the last two years and are just 8-13-4 to start the season. International SYRACUSE, N.Y. Bernie Fine was fired Sunday by Syracuse University after a third man accused the assistant basketball coach of molesting him nine years ago. “At the direction of Chancellor Cantor, Bernie Fine’s employment with Syracuse University has been terminated, effective immediately,” Kevin Quinn, the school’s senior vicepresident for public affairs, said in a statement. The 65-year-old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. He had the longest active streak of consecu-

tive seasons at one school among assistant coaches in Division I. Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, said Sunday that he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room.

He said Fine touched him “multiple” times in that one incident. *** LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Rick Neuheisel returned to UCLA determined to do everything correctly after a

coaching career filled with big successes and equally big trouble. Even athletic director Dan Guerrero, who fired Neuheisel on Monday after four disappointing seasons, agreed the formerly scandal-

plagued coach did most everything the right way at his alma mater. All except the winning part. UCLA is 21-28 under Neuheisel, who will be allowed to coach in Friday’s Pac-12 title game at Oregon.

Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. Get wrinkles out of holiday table cloth with a hair dryer • “Burned rice? No problem. While it’s still hot, carefully remove to a new pot any rice not browned or blackened. Then top it with a single slice of white bread. Allow it to sit for several minutes under a tightly fitted lid. The burned smell is absorbed by the bread, and

the rice is fit to eat.” -- M.U. in Michigan

• Plastic holiday tablecloths can be a festive addition to any family celebration. But what to do if you unpack yours and it’s wrinkled? Get those wrinkles out in a hurry with a hair dryer. Set the hair dryer to a low setting, and gently run the warm air over the

wrinkles. Then smooth and set the table. • To freshen rugs without the heavy perfume smell of store-bought brands, simply sprinkle a little baking soda on your carpet and let it sit for about 10 minutes before vacuuming.

DEAR JOYCE: That’s a fantastic starter kit and a great gift idea! Your daughter likely will appreciate it even more knowing that it came from you and that you put thought into the items she’ll need for most repairs. Being able to handle minor repairs and emergencies gives one a great sense of empowerment -- something the hottest electronics or latest fashions can’t impart. Kudos for putting together a wonderful gift.

DEAR HAMMER: My daughter moved into her first home this fall, and I want to give her a gift that will truly be useful. What I’d like her to know is the feeling one gets after successfully tackling a difficult home repair, like a leaky faucet or a broken window pane. So I’m putting together a basic toolkit, most of which is in a rust-resistant toolbox, and wrapping it all in a pink bow. Here are some of the items I’m including for her: --A claw hammer and a ball peen hammer, and several small boxes of nails. --A set of screwdrivers with removable bits in different sizes and shapes, and a ratchet screwdriver with interchangeable bits. --Pliers: one slip-joint and one locking pair of pliers, and a 10-inch adjustable wrench for big bolts. Also, a wire cutter. --My favorite item: a cordless rechargeable power drill. --A flexible steel tape measure and a combination laser level-stud finder. --A general-purpose handsaw for cutting wood, and a 10-inch hacksaw to cut metal. --Putty knives in different widths. --A metal file, a wood rasp, sandpaper block and assorted sandpaper sheets.

--A wire brush and a nylon brush. --Duct tape, electrical tape and painter’s masking tape. --Scissors, a pocket knife and a utility knife. --Safety goggles, leather work gloves and a filter mask with replaceable filters. I hope your readers like this list! I’ve enjoyed being able to handle minor repairs around the house on my own, and I can’t wait to pass on this tradition. -- Joyce G., Kansas City, Mo.

Location: The Days Inn When: Sunday, December 11, 11:45 am (lunch will be provided) Monday, December 12, 11:45 am (lunch will be provided) Monday, December 12, 7:30 pm (bar service)

You are invited to an investment presentation for DEEP’s geothermal power project targeted near Estevan. The success of this project will not only be a huge win for the green renewable energy sector, but also put Estevan on the “global map” for being Canada’s first major successful geothermal power project. The project will exploit the heat contained in the deep hot aquifers of the Williston Basin through conventional drilling and convert the heat to electricity for sale to SaskPower, using “off-the shelf” turbine technology.

I have been offered $50 for both, but I think that might be a little low. -- Bethany, Chesterfield, Mo. A: I found both of your buttons in an auction catalog, “Hake’s Americana Auction No. 197. The Ike button was valued by Ted Hake for $100, and the RFK portrait button, which is considered extremely rare, at $175. *** Q: I have an RCA con-

sole television set, Model 17T, which was originally purchased in about 1950. I hope you can tell me its value. -- Arlene, Haverhill, Mass. A: I checked with three collectors who seem to agree that your set is probably worth in the $75 to $150 range. Televisions produced after 1948 are fairly common and do not create that much interest with collectors. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions such as the 1975 Panasonic “Flying Saucer” model ($600) and the 1960 Philco “Predicta” ($500). *** Q: I have a pair of Swarovski crystal candlesticks, about 2 1/2 inches tall, both marked on the bottoms. Could you give me

an estimated value of their worth and when produced? -- Dee, Sun City, Ariz. A: I recommend you get a copy of “Collecting Swarovski: Identification and Price Guide” by Dean A. Genth (Krause Books) to determine the value of your candlesticks. Your other alternative is to hire the services of a professional appraisal in your area. If you hire an appraiser, you should expect to pay for this service. *** Q: I have a large collection of 78-rpm recordings, mostly Victor Red Seals and many recorded on just one side. The artists include Alma Gluck and Paul Whiteman. What are records of this vintage worth? -- George, Albuquerque, N.M. A: Most Victor Red

Seal recordings from the early years of the last century are valued in the $1 to $5 range depending on artist, desirability and condition. Caruso made recordings at Victor, but the most valuable are those issued on other, earlier labels such as Pathe and Zonophone. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. CITY PAGE Construction BULLETIN… Water Main Replacement The City of Estevan is undertaking replacement of Water Main at: Souris Avenue – Seventh Street to King Street The purpose of this work is to provide timely and cost effective replacement of existing cast iron water main with PVC pipe, replacement of existing water and sanitary sewer services from water & sewer main up to the property line and surface restoration. This work would require closure of immediate areas of excavation and may necessitate parking restriction in adjacent areas. This work will commence during the week of August 22, 2011 (from Seventh Street) and will take approximately Eight (8) to Ten (10) Weeks to complete (subject to weather). Glen Peterson Construction Ltd. will perform this work within the current Bylaw regulations. Temporary Water Supply Temporary Supply of Water shall be made during the construction through the water tap outside the house during the week of August 22, 2010 (from Seventh Street). This may require crew to enter inside the house to complete the connection. This temporary supply may be connected up to 8 weeks. During this time water pressure may vary, however should not adversely affect appliances that use water. Interruption of water supply may result in some pockets and sediments enter in the plumbing. We advise that when water service is restored, please let each tap in house run for about 30 seconds or until water runs clear. Hot water may require running long enough to completely exchange water in the water heater. The City or the contractor shall not assume any responsibility of damage caused to any appliances such as washer, dishwasher etc, for being connected to temporary water supply. Please see attached advisory from the province on temporary water connections. Safety Construction site could be dangerous. Check Holiday Lists Twice! As the holiday season approaches, many of us have holiday parties and gatherings to plan. In these tough economic times, we face the daunting task of keeping alive our family traditions without breaking our budget. The good news is that by being creative and planning carefully, and making lists, you still can make this season fun and memorable. Most of your budget may be spent on purchasing food for the holidays. The following budget-friendly tips and my easy, meatless recipe can help you save money and have fun at the same time. 1. Establish your budget and how much you can afford to spend. Design a menu around your budget and what is seasonal or on sale at the grocery store. Next, write a list of who will be invited. Your budget will guide you on the number of guests you can comfortably invite. 2. Keep a grocery list so you’re less likely to make an impulse purchase. A list

also should prevent you from making extra trips to the store. Stick to your list for added savings, but stay flexible if you come across a sale. 3. Use coupons! In most cases, grocery stores have great sales on holiday staples like turkeys and hams. Their goal is to get you into the store with the hope that you’ll buy lots of other products that are not on sale. Use this to your advantage, but only buy items you need. Check for online coupons as well. Start with the website of the store where you shop or of products you use. Shopping on double or triple coupon days can save you a lot of money. 4. Buy in bulk. If the price is right and the larger size fits your criteria, go for it! Prices can be deceiving, so pay attention to unit prices to ensure you are getting the best deal. Bigger is not always cheaper. Make sure you will use the food before it spoils. 5. Save on store brands. Buy generic and you could save up to 40 percent a year on your grocery bill. In taste tests, most consumers cannot identify the difference between generic and store brands.

6. Shop high and low. Bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves. The worst deals are at eye level. 7. Pay attention at the checkout. Don’t lose out on a great deal because an item scans incorrectly. 8. If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, ask for help with meal preparation. This will help relieve some of the financial burden. Contact everyone on your holiday guest list and see who can bring a dish to share. Guests traveling from out of town may not be able to bring perishable items, but they can grab some nonperishables on their way in. Make sure you coordinate who’s bringing what to avoid overlap. 9. Include a variety of meatless dishes, like my recipe for Penne Pasta With Pumpkin Sauce. You may have some of the ingredients on hand from Thanksgiving, or they may be on sale. Meatless meals are often cheaper and, as a bonus, generally healthier, too. 10. Help others. How about serving some homemade food or giving a grocery-store gift certificate to a family in need? This is the greatest investment you can make for your money during the holiday season.

Happy holidays! (Additional info provided by Damaris Karanja, MA, nutrition and health education specialist, St. Louis County, University of Missouri Extension.) PENNE PASTA WITH PUMPKIN SAUCE If you don’t have poultry seasoning on hand, you can add in a tablespoon of Italian seasoning and 1/4 teaspoon each of nutmeg and cinnamon. Salt 1 pound whole-wheat

no-Reggiano cheese 1. Heat water for pasta, salt it and bring to a rolling boil. Cook penne until it’s tender but still firm, about 8 to 10 minutes. 2. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic to the pan, saute 3 minutes. Stir in chicken stock and combine with pumpkin, stir in cream or evaporated milk. Season sauce with poultry seasoning, hot sauce or cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper, stirring well. 3. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 5 to 6 minutes more to thicken. Drain pasta and combine with sauce. Sprinkle pasta with grated cheese.
