THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2012

Cheers to all those who give so generously at Christmas. Cheers to all the small towns that had Christmas concerts!

Cheers to the City of Estevan for clearing the walking paths in the Pleasantdale area on Friday. It makes the commute to school for small children a lot easier. I’ve lived in this area for 13 years and this is the first time I’ve ever noticed it being done. Thank you for making life easier for the kind neighbours who always took it upon themselves to use their snowblowers to get the job done. Cheers to my neighbours on our bay who are considerate enough to angle park, so we all have places to park our vehicles. It also protects our children, as it forces the “u-ballers to slow down. Cheers to the 60th annual Rotary Club of Estevan’s Christmas Carol Festival this weekend. It was an enjoyable concert with an entertaining variety of performances. Cheers to the unique and entertaining performance of Stomprehensive. Cheers to the employee at Sobeys in the flower department. She was very helpful and friendly on Saturday. Cheers to the two per cent of drivers who know how to drive on icy highways, how to take a corner and stay in their own lane when going around a corner. Merry Christmas.

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY IN 3D

Friday, Dec. 21Thursday, Dec. 27

Jeers to shoppers who can’t take the time to return shopping carts to the corrals and leave them taking up spaces where vehicles can park or leaving them directly behind vehicles trying to back up.

7:30 pm

Jeers to people who park their vehicles in “baby parking, with no baby/toddler seats visible. Jeers to the mailman who insists walking through the yards and snowbanks instead of the sidewalks. Jeers to a nearby town for not having a Christmas concert! I can’t even imagine the disappointment of all the small children, and it’s especially sad for the parents who missed out on this time-honoured tradition. Shame, shame! Jeers to the woman at the leisure centre who thinks it’s OK to park in handicap parking spots just because they are there. The other three spots were in fact taken up by vehicles with handicap parking tags and two other vehicles in the lot could not use a handicap spot thanks to this person. Jeers to all coaches who use intimidation, profanity, yelling and temper tantrums as tactics when coaching a minor hockey team. Bigger jeers to organizations that, year after year, let these same coaches run a team. Bullying is a big deal nowadays, but it seems quite acceptable in the minor hockey system.

ZZZ EDQNUXSWF\ GHORLWWH FD ZZZ GHEWVROXWLRQV GHORLWWH FD The Red Cross is once again gearing up for another Day of Pink. They are calling on people to purchase T-shirts and other goods for the special day set for April 10. Estevan hosted its first march in the spring this past year and is getting ready for its second annual Day of Pink march.

Pink is the colour of respect Colours mean different things to different people at different times, but on the Day of Pink, pink is all about respect. The Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink has been set for April 10, and George Barker, the outreach co-ordinator for southeast Saskatchewan, is encouraging everyone to order their T-shirts to support young people everywhere. Barker noted they sold 14,000 shirts in the province last year, which was the first year the Day of Pink festivities were brought to Estevan. “It seems like every year somebody new joins in, so it is growing, said Barker. Because of the RespectED side of the campaign, the initiative is about awareness and prevention. “We’re promoting prevention, so we want people to come out and take a stand, and let’s prevent this from happening, said Barker. RespectEd is simply about education and respect, he added. “It’s teaching that we can live with our diversities

and respect one another for who we are and stop the nonsense that’s going on. Barker noted it isn’t just students or young people who should heed the lessons of the day. As people from around the world continue to settle in southeast Saskatchewan, embracing their differences and finding common ground is something we should all be doing with the people of our communities. “We’ve got new immigrant people moving in and yes, they’ve got different cultural things and maybe different coloured skin, but that’s got nothing to do with it. They’re human beings. We, as people, need to take a look at how we talk and what we do. I think we’ve lost a lot of respect. They call it RespectEd because that’s the main issue; we want to bring back respect to who we are. Last year, more than 19,000 youth participated in Red Cross violence and abuse prevention programs. More students will go through the programming next year. “We are basically all

the same. Yeah, there are cultural issues, but we gotta get by those things and learn to live in peace, so we try to teach our children that they have the right to go to school and be safe. He said the Red Cross is also doing something called peer-counselling training. “We go in and we actually train the students to be the people who actually carry this program on. Then as those kids get older and move on, they’re bringing other kids up through the program, said Barker. During the first year of the Day of Pink march, 1,200 people turned out, and in year two things got even bigger in Weyburn, while the inaugural walk in Estevan last year had an extra block added to the route. “I was quite impressed with Estevan’s turnout, said Barker. “My hope is that people don’t pass this off, but they would really truly get behind it, because there’s a lot of people really wanting something done. The way to start is to get involved. My hope is that more get

involved. Funds are raised through the sale of pink T-shirts. When ordering T-shirts online, Barker noted that people should select Saskatchewan, so the funds raised go to provincial programs in the Red Cross, and individuals should register as businesses, because the only options are business and school. The deadline to order a T-shirt, sticker or other paraphernalia is Jan. 31. The walks in Estevan and Weyburn have yet to be scheduled, but with the Day of Pink coming on April 10, it’s likely they will fall on or very near that day. Barker noted that for them, it’s not just the Day of Pink, but also a whole week of activities that sees them go into several schools with the presentation Beyond the Hurt featuring players from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Maybe there is a lot being done, but from an outsider looking in, it appears that nobody is trying to make any changes to limit the shootings that take place far too frequently south of the border. The pro-gun control crowd will tell you that guns don’t kill people. I both agree with that sentiment and also find it incredibly offensive because it’s completely wrong. In all of these shootings, mental-health issues are the biggest problem. The second biggest problem is excellent access to weaponry that gives people the power to commit these massive crimes. Americans have a love affair with guns. Guns are the children that can do no wrong in the eyes of the parent. The absence of any real gun control in the United States has led to a culture that puts up with these shootings. Our friends to the south may never consider limits on firearm possession an acceptable solution to their violence problems. It isn’t a catch-all solution, but having some sort of process in place to acquire these weapons will change how people perceive guns. For some people, the answer is more guns. In the wake of the shooting in a Colorado theatre earlier this year, some suggested that if other people in the theatre had guns,

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers lives would be saved. To them, the only way that theatre could be safe is if 10 other people had concealed weapons and started shooting them in the dark in a crowded theatre at the original culprit. Anybody who says that would play out better is delusional. In that sense, the best way to discourage school shootings and save lives is to give every teacher a gun for their desk. To these people, the best solution to the gun problem is more guns, which is apparently how logic works for some people. My boss hunts and said he’s in favour of strict control on guns. I have other friends with guns. They’re hunters. We do have rules that come with gun ownership, though. We aren’t allowed to carry concealed weapons. Pretty much anybody can get a gun licence in Canada, but there is at least some sort of process in owning a gun. All those things have an impact our attitude towards guns. These rules reinforce the idea that guns are serious and dangerous

weapons. Keeping one or more takes some real responsibility. It seems the weapons are just taken much too lightly in the United States. These mass shootings aren’t just about mental-health problems. If they were, then I don’t imagine America would have a rate so much higher than the rest of the world. That’s only the case if Americans have a susceptibility for mental illness many times higher than the rest of us. I get the feeling it’s not all about mental health. The freedom of America’s gun laws simply help enable these massacres to continue, and no matter how much everyone wants them to stop, far too many people in the States consider the frequency of these shootings a price they are willing to pay for their gun freedom. Following these tragedies, people want some sort of good to come from it. No good ever does. If people continue to ignore the negative impact of firearms, there will be no change. Until everyone really gets tired of this garbage happening in their communities, nothing will change. Actions speak louder than words. The Americans say they want these shootings to stop, but I won’t take them seriously until there is some action in the spirit of preventing further massacres.

Canadian farmers burden to feed world There was a time not so long ago, that I looked at David Suzuki as a sage voice of reason in terms of protecting our environment. But my respect for his vision took a major blow this week. I was at the local arena watching the Yorkton Terrier hockey team bury Estevan in a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League game. I spend my time at Terrier games at the glass to get photos for Yorkton This Week, and for most games I am joined by a local custom combine operator. Between hockey rushes, we debate many things, including a number that relate to agriculture. This past Saturday night, my bud told me how he was reading about David Suzuki making comments regarding Canadian farmers, which frankly shocked me. The friend said Suzuki had come out and suggested Canadian farmers should feel little obligation to feed people outside Canada. My first thought was how “westernthinking” that was, a view I would have expected more of some right wing American politician. From the earliest times of cultivation, farmers have sold their produce, and centuries ago that trade began to cross national borders. The Canadian west would not be what

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist it is today without the impact agricultural exports have had on the economy. So when I got home from the game I hit the Internet to see exactly what Suzuki had said, thinking my bud had somewhat embellished things. I quickly found a story at the Western Producer site and found out my bud had it pretty close in terms of relating the story. The story at www.producer.com has Suzuki quoted as having publicly stated: “You mean to tell me that western farmers have a responsibility to feed people in India, China and Europe? Bullshit.” Suzuki went on to say people in places like Africa can’t afford to buy the food produced here, so we need not focus on producing that food. In my opinion, that is an incredibly crass view of things. We should care about stemming starvation, not adding to the problem. But for a second, let’s agree with Suzuki. What would farmers do with all the excess grain? After all, the vast majority of wheat, oats, canola and other grains,

pulses and oilseeds grown in this country are sold to export. Suzuki said he wants to turn back the clock a half century, to a time when farmers basically grew grain organically in the sense that commercial fertilizers and agricultural crop protection products did not exist. That would certainly trim back production over time, although I suspect production would still exceed Canadian consumption. While the excess could always be sold to export, one wonders how Canadian farmers would realize the net returns they require. Organic or not, there is limited appetite from Canadian consumers to place a huge amount of extra money into their monthly food budget. Farmers have a huge amount of debt based on export-driven production, not to mention farm size and equipment. In Suzuki’s rose-coloured vision, he might see a five-decade turn back in time as easy, but in my mind, the expectation farmers would be using Massey Super 90 combines again is a lot of fantasy. Canadian farmers are good at producing food and a growing world population needs to eat, and to turn away from that would simply be wrong-minded to me. And for such a suggestion, my respect for Suzuki will forever be tarnished.

Do people make too big of a deal about saying “Merry Christmas?

He She He She Said

Over the past few years, the popular December greeting has changed to “Happy Holidays instead of “Merry Christmas. The reasoning behind the change is to be more politically correct and make anyone of any religion feel welcome. However there are some people out there who have made a big deal about the Christmas greeting we use. In my experience with this whole politically correct holiday greeting, it is the people who celebrate Christmas that have the biggest bee in their bonnet. I celebrate Christmas myself and usually wish people Merry Christmas around the holidays, and not once have I had someone ask me not to say that to them or use Happy Holidays instead. What I have heard though, is people say they won’t support stores during the Christmas season that use politically correct greetings in advertisements or in their stores. I have also heard those who celebrate Christmas blame people of other religions for the politically correct greetings that people use now too. All this complaining seems senseless to me. If you want to say Merry Christmas, feel free. And if someone says Happy Holidays, who cares. We don’t need to force religion on anyone, but everyone should be free to celebrate the religious holidays of their choice. Let’s stop making a big deal about what greeting is used, and just enjoy some extra days off doing something you love. — Rhys Kelso

I definitely think people are making too big of deal of Christmas greetings. For one, Christmas is supposed to be a positive time spent with family and friends. You’re celebrating time together. Regardless of religion, Christmas is a time for doing good. It’s not a time for worrying about being politically correct. People worry that wishing others “Merry Christmas is discriminating against people who aren’t Christian. Which might be the case, but so what? As often as I rally against religious purposes, I have to say that Canada was largely founded by Christians and by Christian principles. Celebrating Christmas is a tradition as old as this country. It’s Canadian. (5 If you went to another '(/,9 country that didn’t celebrate your religious holiday, would ZZZ WRZHUFDIH FD you be offended by their nonpolitically correct holiday greeting? I wouldn’t, because I accept that as part of the culture. So offer others greetings as you want. And if you hear something that doesn’t pertain to your faith, think of it as well wishes. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2012

It’s the end of the world If you’re reading this on Friday, Dec. 21, then clearly the world hasn’t ended. If the world is in fact ending and you still made the time to read my weekly column, then thanks. I appreciate you. I have a university professor from Guatamala who swears the Mayans didn’t predict the end of the world. He says their calendar just ran out, similar to how ours does every December. A new era is beginning and it’s something to be celebrated instead of feared. So I’m confident I’m still going to have to work on Saturday, which is fine with me. However, I’m going to briefly entertain the idea that the world will end this week. And I’m writing a short list of the things I would do when facing the end of the world. 1) Eat all the chocolate I want. There’s nothing wrong with gaining a few pounds or getting a cavity when you know you won’t be living past Friday. So I’ll just abandon the will power I usually exercise when tempted by my favourite sweet treats and indulge. Might as well die happily,

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me if not a little bit heavier. 2) Spend all the money I have and run up my Visa. I was just going to say “spend all my money but I don’t really have that much cash kicking around and my credit limit is decent. So I’d buy all the things I’ve been waiting to purchase, and enjoy them like crazy in the time I have. 3) Go to work. That’s right people, I’d still be getting out of bed and heading to my job. It’s not that I’m absolutely in love with what I do, but I believe that delivering the news is important. Despite what people are saying following the coverage of the school shooting in Connecticut, the media is important. If you want to know what’s going on in the world, want to educate yourself on current events, then you pay attention to the media. If you choose not to know and remain

ignorant, that’s not for a lack of information available. So I’d be getting out of bed to do my part educating the masses. 4) Open my Christmas gifts. I don’t think I could go to the grave not knowing what Santa has in store for me this year. I’ve been extra well-behaved in 2012, so I’m crossing my fingers the gifts under the tree will reflect that. 5) Speak with everyone I love. Maybe that’s a little mushy and lame, but I’d definitely like to say good-bye to those I care about. I’m of the religious belief that I wouldn’t be seeing them ever again and I think it would be important to let everyone know that they’re loved and will be missed. So yes, it would be a busy week for me. Thankfully, the world won’t be ending this week. I’m pretty sure, anyway. To be

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2012

Page 7

It may not have been the end of the world, but it was close This week, on Dec. 21, the world is supposed to end. At least, that’s what some people think the Mayans predicted. I’m pretty confident it won’t, but precisely six months earlier, on June 21, my world nearly ended. I was literally about a few hairs’ width away from death. That would be my guess as to how much blood flow was going through a 99.9 per cent blockage in the left descending artery in my heart. That, my friends, is the largest artery in the heart. When it gets plugged off, it’s game over. They call such blockages “the widow maker, according to my sister, the registered nurse. I was within days, or hours, of having such an event. Over the previous month, I was having what I would describe as “flutters in my chest - weird sensations, nothing dramatic. But I would be a little winded running up the stairs from the basement. Then one night I had sharp pain in my left wrist and deltoid. I drove myself to the hospital as my very worried wife, also a nurse, stayed home with the kids. The overnight stay showed nothing amiss on the ECG, and nothing wrong with the blood work. Go home, I was told, but come the next day for a stress test. It was unnerving sitting there with several other men, all older than I am. The doctor said half of the people earlier that day had been sent to Regina. I would be the next one. The stress test revealed that by the time I was at the running stage, seven out of 12 heartbeats were wonky. I needed to see a cardiologist right away. Unfortunately, it would take another 12 days to get in to see him. When I did, he sent me straight to the cardiology unit at the Regina General, and told me don’t waste time getting there. When I got there, again the ECG and blood work were good. But that night, the blood work started showing the early signs of a heart attack. The angiogram the next day revealed an almost complete blockage in the largest artery in my heart. They would be commenc-

ing with an angioplasty and stent right away. However, an ambulance had just arrived with a woman in the middle of a heart attack, and they needed to work on her first. I spent the next hour or two with the computer screen, 16 inches from my head, showing the repeating loop of the swooping scan of my heart, and the obvious blockage. It was like watching an endless loop of a car wreck on CNN as the commentators spoke, except you are the one in the wreck. I couldn’t move an inch due to the placement of the tube into the femoral artery, lest I bleed out. “You strike me as a stressful person, the longserving head nurse said. Gee, I wonder why. Thankfully, she got some drugs for me and had me put out. I awoke later to an entirely new reality. Yes, there had been some damage to my heart. It would take several months to bring myself back up to where I was. Don’t lift anything over 10 pounds for several weeks. Take your meds. Never miss them. Change your diet and get regular exercise. Reduce stress. In six months, you should be as good as new.

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile For the first few weeks, I could hardly walk a block. I took six weeks off work and basically rested the entire summer holidays, which is not as much fun as you might think. Six months later, I am, for the most part, good as new. It has been extremely hard to change my diet, because, frankly, EVERYTHING is full of salt and fat. I did a lot of walking until the snow flew, but now I have to get on the exercise bike or use the walking track. When you’ve had such a close call, you end up second-guessing everything. You frustratingly find yourself in the same patterns. Why am I yelling at the kids for not cleaning their room despite me asking them to do so for the past three days? Am I being a bad parent for letting them get away with it, or am I going to die next week and the last thing they will remember

is that Dad was screaming at me about cleaning my room? Why are we still buying the same foods at the grocery store? Why am I finding myself driven to work more, not less? Why can’t I go to sleep at a regular hour? Am I afraid that I won’t be waking up the next morning? Will everyone get along this Christmas, or will there be the usual squabbles? Will this be my last Christmas, or do I have another 20, 30, 40 to go? My dad is turning 70 in January. I’m 37 now. Will I even see a pension cheque at 67? Will I walk my daughter down the aisle? Will I see my son off to university? Have I been a good enough husband for my wife, who has stood by me through all this? My daughter had to write a narrative in her Grade 3 class this month. So, through three drafts, she detailed over three pages

exactly what I wrote above, except her timing was a little off. “It was the only thing I could think about what happened over the summer, she told me. “When my dad had a heart attack, was the title. “It was night time when my dad had chest pain. He drove to the hospital and he stayed a night. The next day, we went to the hospital and me and my mom and Spencer went to my auntie and uncle’s house. Me and my cousins played. My cousins’ names are Abby and Cali. I love my auntie and uncle and cousins we stayed (with). My dad came from

the hospital and we stayed two or one nights and we went back home. He came back from the hospital and we went home. The Mayans may not have predicted the end of the world, but neither had I predicted the (near) end of my world. I just hope that, with the Lord’s help, I can avoid any such end for a long time, and be a better man, husband and father in the meantime. Merry Christmas. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Two Big Six players involved in tragedy The Big Six Hockey League experienced tragedy

last week when two members of the Arcola-Kisbey

12124HS00

Combines were killed in a car accident while driving to a game on Dec. 11. Teammates Brennan Luffman, 24, and Shaun Seghers, 25, were the players involved in the collision. Both men were from Weyburn and had been playing for the Combines for a number of years. Seghers played junior hockey for the Weyburn Red Wings, while Luffman also played baseball for Moose Jaw and Weyburn in the Western Major Baseball League for a number of years. The Combines played the night of the accident, unaware of what had happened and won in a shootout 3-2. Arcola won’t play again until Dec. 22 in Oxbow. In other news from around the league, the Carnduff Red Devils hosted the second-place Midale Mustangs and won 4-1. The Dec. 14 game was the only one played last Friday as the remaining games were postponed, including games between the Bienfait Coalers and Oxbow Huskies, Redvers Rockets and Carlyle Cougars. A game between the Mustangs and Rockets was also postponed the following night.

Part 1 of 2012’s best quips As is becoming a tradition, the columns over Christmas and New Year’s weeks look back at some of the funniest quips from the past 12 months. Here’s Part I, the best from January through June. • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Quarterback Ricky Ray, from Happy Camp, California, was traded to the Argos. He’s no longer a happy camper.â€? (This was from Jan. 9/12. After winning the Grey Cup, he’s back to being a Happy Camper/) • Len Berman of ThatsSports.com, on threatened protests in Montreal because Canadiens coach Randy Cunneyworth doesn’t speak French: “Nobody knew what Casey Stengel was saying either, and nobody picketed Yankee Stadium.â€? • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “Will everybody please stop all of this crazy talk about Peyton Manning going to the New York Jets? This would be like Einstein enrolling at Mississippi State.â€? • R.J. Currie again: “Ken Dryden told Sportsnet 590 that hockey needs to do more to cut down on brain damage. The NHL has re-

sponded by asking Dryden to stay off the radio.â€? • Steve Rushin of SI.com, via Twitter, with hockey salutations: “Happy 110th birthday to Frank Zamboni, who left us in 1988 but still resurfaces periodically.â€? • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “A woman was arrested after reportedly trying to extort Yankees GM Brian Cashman. Now Cashman knows how fans feel when they go to buy a hot dog and beer at a Yankees game.â€? • Among the top 10 questions to ask yourself before spending $16,000 on a Super Bowl ticket ... from CBS’s David Letterman: “Do they have anything in the more affordable $15,000 range?â€? • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, on rapper 50 Cent saying he won $500,000 betting on the Giants to beat the 49ers: “I’d be tempted to say 50 Cent has terrific luck, except for the fact he’s been shot something like 37 times.â€? • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “Tim Tebow won’t play in the Pebble Beach AT&T, and that’s too bad. Now there’s

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist

nothing to hold back the storms.â€? • Comedian Argus Hamilton, after commissioner Roger Goodell said that the NFL’s revenue-sharing among teams amounts to socialism: “He’s right. However, 600 guys splitting up $10 billion isn’t exactly the way Karl Marx diagramed the play on the chalkboard.â€? • TNT’s Conan O’Brien, after supermodel Gisele Bundchen asked people to pray for her husband to win the Super Bowl: “In response, God said, ‘You know what, I think I’ve done enough for Tom Brady.’â€? • ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, on the appeal of the Westminster Dog Show: “It combines the excitement of people walking dogs to the thrill of dogs sitting perfectly still.â€? • Tom Cuddy of Boston’s WBZ Radio, on the

Archdiocese of Montreal buying newspaper ads encouraging parishioners to ask God to help the last-place Canadiens: “At least they’re in the prayoffs.â€? • John Hawkins of golfchannel.com, on the Jeremy Lin hullaballoo: “For those who don’t understand all the fuss, imagine Jonas Blixt winning the Masters and U.S. Open.â€? • Norman Chad of the Washington Post, unearthing a little-known fact at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show: “The Australian Terrier chases his tail counterclockwise.â€? • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “President Obama spoke recently at University of Miami, where it was 83 degrees. He loved the weather, saying, “I don’t know how you guys go to class. It’s too nice outside.â€? And Miami football players

responded: “Class?â€? • CBS’s David Letterman, on the reason behind actress Reese Witherspoon’s visit to the Bronx Bombers’ spring-training camp: “The Yankees are taking a look at her as a possible Alex Rodriguez girlfriend.â€? • Barach again: “Former Major League star Lenny Dykstra has been sentenced to three years in prison for car theft. He says it’s still better than being traded to the Cubs.â€? • Jimmy Fallon again, on the electrical blaze at Fenway Park: “Instead of calling 911, Boston fans just heckled the fire until it left.â€? • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers just enthusiastically endorsed Rick Santorum for President. The NFL is reviewing tapes to see if the Saints or any other team gave him a particularly hard hit to the head.â€? • Another one from Barach: “The Washington Nationals will be selling an eight-pound ‘Strasburger’ named after pitcher Stephen Strasburg. In a related story, the Yankees are thinking of naming their overpriced hot

dogs after Alex Rodriguez.â€? • The Cleveland Browns announced that they will not pursue Peyton Manning. Said Bianchi: “In related news, I am announcing that I will not pursue Penelope Cruz.â€? • Brad Miller, a congressman from North Carolina who happens to be a UNC alumnus: “If Duke was playing against the Taliban, then I’d have to pull for the Taliban.â€? • Scott Ostler again: “It was rumoured the Jets were jealous of Linsanity and wanted to trump it with Timsanity. Done. New York has cemented its claim as the world capital of sportsrelated mental disorders.â€? • Currie again: “The government of Canada is phasing out the penny. This will end great Canadian traditions like penny jars, penny-ante poker and CFL signing bonuses.â€? • Fallon, on the Mets’ 4-0 start: “I don’t want to say it’s surprising, but today the Mets tested themselves for steroids.â€? Estevan children had the chance to talk with Santa Claus on the phone in 1994 when a line was set up from the North Pole to the Energy City. Derek Pele (pictured) got his chance to tell Santa what was on his Christmas wishlist. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary.

Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that trafďŹ c can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difďŹ cult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the TrafďŹ c Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the TrafďŹ c Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets?

What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www.estevan.ca

Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difďŹ cult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the TrafďŹ c Bylaw.

How does the City determine what streets get cleaned ďŹ rst? The City classiďŹ es the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of trafďŹ c and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily trafďŹ c volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of trafďŹ c and designed to route trafďŹ c from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily trafďŹ c of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of trafďŹ c and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily trafďŹ c volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent. access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am – 10pm, city equipment does not operate at these locations outside of these hours.

The City also asks that: Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, ďŹ re protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the TrafďŹ c Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact neighbors and makes snow removal more difďŹ cult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of problems for snow removal and trafďŹ c. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles limit

• Children are kept away from snow dump sites and piles. These are dangerous areas when equipment is working, as well as voids in the piles may collapse trapping children. • Please keep clear of snow clearing equipment and crews. If possible choose an alternate route to avoid delays. • Please keep back 20m of Sanding equipment, as they will be discharging sand at intersections of streets, lanes, and high trafďŹ c zones. • Please keep all emergency exits buildings clear of snow and ice. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated
