A group performs Christmas carols at the Estevan Rotary Club’s Carol Festival last year. The festival that raises funds for four local band programs will be featured again for its 59th year on Dec. 11 at St. Paul’s United Church.

Festival continues to bring carols to the community It’s not a contest, but for the 59th year an open invitation has gone out to all musical talents in the community to be part of the Estevan Rotary Club’s annual Carol Festival.

This Sunday’s festival will be a platform for 10 acts who will perform a number of Christmas songs as a fundraiser for local band programs and a way to get people into the singing season. Gloria Chicoine is the chair of the Carol Festival committee for the club and has been organizing this event almost as long as she’s been a member. It’s her seventh year doing the Christmas event and her eighth with the club.

Chicoine said she always enjoys doing it, and each year they eventually have enough groups to fill out the program. There are some scheduling conflicts because it’s a very busy time of year, but they hold the event at the same time each year so it’s easier for people to plan around.

“It takes a bit to find enough people, but it’s always a go,” said Chicoine.

She said there are many regular acts, and when they can’t make the event, they are always

sure to mark it off for the following year.

“There are lots groups who have been invited, and they all want to do everything, but they can’t.”

That just keeps things fresh every year, and she noted they have only three or four returning acts from last year. That leaves lots of opportunity for new performers to put on a show.

The performances will once again be held in St. Paul’s United Church, which Chicoine said is a great venue, particularly for organizing the groups because there are different classrooms that she can assign to each one. That gives the groups space to for any preparation they would like to do before the show.

This year’s show will include a trumpet trio, the Northwest/Southeast Chorus and the Hill View Manor Choir. Chicoine is excited to have the Northwest/Southeast Chorus, a collaboration between southeast Saskatchewan and northwest North Dakota who performed in Estevan recently. She also noted this will be the first year that the chorus has been a part of this event and there is also a seniors’

choir from Hill View Manor, one of the retirement homes in the city.

Chicoine said she sends out an open invitation to all musical groups in the community and all are welcome to perform a couple of numbers. If a new group comes to town, she said she will send them an invitation as well.

She noted the variety of acts with performers including vocal choirs as well as instrumentals, like the trumpet trio.

They show also includes community singing part way through to get the audience involved.

Attendees are looking to get into the holiday spirit and with the ensemble groups singing Christmas classics and other seasonal tunes, it’s easy to get into the mood.

Chicoine said, “It’s always very uplifting. The reason we do it is entirely for the community, and as a fundraiser for local bands.”

The festival raises funds for four band programs: the Estevan Comprehensive School band, rural schools band, public schools junior band and separate schools band.

Donations will be accepted

for those attending the performances.

The performances at St. Paul’s United Church begin with the 6:45 p.m. prelude on Dec. 11.

Looking at 2011 through eyes of innovation This past week marks what my sister calls my Estevanniversary, so to acknowledge the first year of my time in the Energy City I’ll look at some of the top inventions or innovations the world has seen in that time.

The possessed hand is exactly what it sounds like, a way to give control of your hand over to a machine, which might be a great defence one day for some of the people I see in court on a regular basis.

The possessed hand sounds like it could do much more evil than good, but let’s look first at the good. The possessed hand works by strapping on an armband with 28 electrodes, which send pulses into the joints and muscles that create involuntary finger movements. The catch is that the user no longer has control of their hand. It is completely vulnerable to the whims of the whomever controls the machine.

The good is that now anybody could play the guitar like Jimi Hendrix. Just program the armband to play a song by forcing the user to hit the proper finger positions on the fret board and voila, everyone’s a rockstar. In my job, there would be no such thing as a typo, because my hands could be programmed to type the story, and I would

If the possessed hand got together with Watson, IBM’s Jeopardy! contestant, that would be an interesting duo. Watson can think, in a manner of speaking, and the possessed hand can control people, so we really are quickly making our way toward a futuristic dystopia where robotic beings rule the world, as foretold in the Flight of the Conchords song The Humans are Dead.

Luckily for them they have a corner on that listening market.

The most relaxing song in the world was created this year by Marconi Union called Weightless. It’s eight minutes long and apparently reduces anxiety by 65 per cent and can lower your heart beat by 35 per cent. Check the song out on YouTube.

If you listen to the song as you fall asleep every night, I’m sure in a week or so it will heal all that ails you.

Apparently police in Santa Cruz, Calif. didn’t learn anything from Minority Report and have developed a system to identify when and where crimes will occur, so they can position police in the area to pre-empt the crime. I think prosecutors will find it difficult to get convictions for criminals who have not yet committed a crime, but it will be interesting the first time a case like that goes to trial.

Another innovation this year was a razor made of iridium with blades that are allegedly 5,000 times thinner than a man’s facial hair. The cost of the razor is $100,000. A price like that makes me want to ignore this creation as an unmarketable and useless tool because it will not do a job that is proportionally better than a typical razor when considering the price.

I won’t be able to take advantage of any of these innovations until the come on the market at a reasonable price. If I were a more anxious person I would listen to that relaxing song everyday.

I guess I will have to wait until next year to find a new invention that is ready to use. In the meantime I could call up the Estevan police and say I have a sneaking suspicion that a crime is about to take place.

Crop insurance has grown and diversified An interesting anniversary was celebrated last week in the province as the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation hit 50 years.

The idea of crop insurance has come a long way in five decades.

“Before 1961, crop insurance was offered on an area basis through the Prairie Farm Assistance Act. Premiums were based on a percentage of sales: the higher the yield, the higher the premium.

Coverage was the same across the province resulting in townships with low average yields paying lower premiums but receiving indemnities more often than townships with higher yields,” detailed the SCIC website.

“In 1961, the federal and provincial governments granted permission to operate a pilot program in 25 areas of the province, mainly in the east and northeast. (That year) 194 producer applications were accepted from a total of 439 province-wide.

“Approximately 31,700 acres and three insurable crops were covered.

Wheat, oats and barley were insurable with a coverage of 60 per cent of the long term average yield. The price option was $1/bushel for spring wheat.”

In retrospect those are rather humble

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist beginnings, but the trial year was enough to show crop insurance was wanted, demonstrated by more than 400 applicants that first year, and that it could work in terms of providing farmers with some level of security in regard to their main farm crops.

That is really what insurance comes down to. You invest some dollars in a program which kicks in as a safety net in times of distress, whether it is car insurance and you are in an accident, fire insurance if a home burns, and crop insurance if drought or another problem impacts production.

Like any insurance, crop insurance is not perfect in respect to covering every producer for every problem that might arise, at least in terms of making them a profit. But it does provide a rather stable base safety net for the majority of producers.

So fast forward to 2006 and numbers

on the SCIC website, where it states “SCIC insured 66 per cent of all land seeded in Saskatchewan, with approximately 28,200 customers insuring 22.1 million annual acres and 500,000 forage acres under the multi-peril programs. An additional 2.5 million acres were covered by weather-based insurance products.”

What is also interesting is how the insurance program has diversified as have farmers. The trial run before 1961 covered only three cereal crops.

Today the list of crops is long, covering such crops as canary seed, triticale, faba beans, camelina, coriander, wild rice, vegetables and even honey.

Farming has changed over 50 years, significantly so, and the SCIC has played a role in allowing that to happen. By diversifying what it covers in recent years, it has become more relevant as a safety net program for producers who have evolved into much more diverse producers.

The SCIC has grown and evolved and has been there for farmers through a number of federal and provincial governments. And while most of the time farm programs get buried in paperwork and ultimately fail - GRIP, NISA and others come to mind - crop insurance has been a shining example of what can be achieved.

I won’t lie, I only had to write one final this semester. And because I’m off on internship next semester, that’s it for finals for me this year. But I have lived through four other semesters of studying (well, two really, since the two in Missouri hardly qualify) and know a couple of things that are helpful during cram time.

1) If you live in an apartment, buy disposable dishes and cutlery. I agree that there’s a problem with over-filled landfills, but piles of dirty dishes are not something a panicking student needs to deal with.

One week of cups that you don’t need to wash is a bit of a blessing when you’re trying to memorize Canada’s prime ministers in order.

2) Make something that you can eat for several days. If you’re cooking for yourself, make some chilli in a slow cooker and eat it three meals a day. Or maybe just two meals a day.

I like to have sandwiches for lunch.

3) Turn off your TV. I know it can be difficult to voluntarily miss The Big Bang Theory, but you can watch it illegally online when finals are over.

Maybe It’s Just Me out longer than it needs to. I’d say that this rule applies to Facebook and Twitter too, but I can’t be that hypocritical.

4) Reward yourself. I realize this is super nerdy of me, but after an allotted time period of studying, I reward myself with a couple of chapters of my favourite book, or maybe a short nap or a Facebook creep. Finding little ways to motivate yourself is important, especially when the deadline is looming.

5) Tim Hortons. Take a break and grab some coffee. I’ve seen firsthand what happens to people who don’t take breaks and go completely crazy.

For example, one person I know finished an eighthour study binge, then went home, finished a bag of Goodie Rings, laughed hysterically on the couch for 20 minutes and then passed out cold. Finals can be a frightening time.

6) Make sure all your

laundry is done before fi nals begin. Because if you are like me, you hate laundry and the fact that it costs money, and you know that it’s just 10 times easier to take it home and do it there. Plus, if you’re like me, your mom LOVES to do laundry and gets super excited when you haul three black garbage bags full into the house. Right, Mom? 7) Stay calm and call your mom. Or your best friend. Or your roommate.

Finals are only a small problem in the great span of your life. You are going to beat them. And if you don’t, there’s always next semester.

How much Christmas decorating is too much?

When it comes to decorating for Christmas, to each his own, but there is still definitely a happy medium between Griswold and Scrooge.

For some, getting into the holiday spirit means shouting from the rooftops of their elaborately lit homes, and for others, it’s about sitting by the fire with a modestly decorated fir tree in the living room.

Those who fail to set up their Christmas decorations before the snow shows for another overstayed welcome probably aren’t the type to bathe their properties in lights, inflatables and slogans of merriment.

Just because their decorations are late to the party doesn’t mean they are put up with any less spirit of the season. The mentality of the Clark Griswold is that the only way to truly celebrate something is to blow it up and celebrate with all the conviction one can muster. The perception is that if nobody else can see that you care more than they do, you can’t win at Christmas.

Griswold operates on the belief that in order to make the holidays special, fun or successful, he needs to overcompensate on his Christmas cheer.

While driving in the country at night, it’s always nice to find those few properties that are lit up like a Cheech and Chong movie, but you still have to wonder who has the time to set up all those decorations. The answer, of course, is farmers.

For those who aren’t going to great lengths to show their enthusiasm for electric lights and red-green colour schemes, there are more subtle ways to show an interest in the season, if you have any interest in the fun of the holiday anyway.

There needs to be something decorative or holiday-like to really get in the mood. A house with yellowish incandescent lights over a coffee table with an empty pizza box on it is not very festive. Put out a life-size cardboard cutout of Santa Claus. I believe you can get them from Coca-Cola.

If trees aren’t your thing, at the very least erect a Festivus pole. It’s not extravagant but it’s something. You can maybe even snap a branch off a tree and tie it in a loop for a makeshift wreath. Four feet of branch should be perfect.

However much you decorate, there are better ways than to scream to the rest of the neighbourhood, “LOOK HOW MUCH I LOVE CHRISTMAS!” I think that violates a noise bylaw.

Ah decorating, an issue to divide the masses.

I was raised to believe that holiday decorations consists of a Christmas tree set up the first weekend of December, a string of Christmas lights surrounding the house (not green), and a handful of decorations in the main rooms of the house.

I think that I will continue to enjoy Christmas this way for the rest of my life. Though I tend to be flighty and prone to changing my mind. This style, which I find tasteful, is comparably minimalistic next to a house with a full sleigh-andreindeer display on the roof, even more so next to that house on youtube that co-ordinates a light show with holiday music.

So what is too much?

Let’s begin with outside. In my opinion, if your energy bill requires a second mortgage to support it during the holidays, then you’ve probably crossed the line into “excessive” territory. And if your neighbours have been complaining about being unable to sleep because your front yard seems to be in constant daylight, then again, maybe too much. But if you’ve managed to walk that careful line between “holiday hater” and “Whoville,” then I think you might be on to something.

I figure lights dangling from your eavestroughs, maybe a couple of lights in a tree and a few faux reindeer pretending to scavenge for grass on your lawn would look nice. I do ask that you keep your lights in complimentary colours, meaning no pink, orange and purple on one single tree. Also, if you care about my friend Brandon at all, you’ll avoid blue lights, because he can’t see them and it makes him a reckless driver during twinkle tours.

Inside your home, I like my mom’s rule: Santas, elves, garlands and whatever can stay up until Boxing Day-ish, and then should be taken down. But snowmen and other ornaments of winter fun can stay up until you get sick of moving them to dust (or dusting around them, in my case). Your friends and family don’t need to mistake your house for the North Pole.

Plus, if you have pets or children age one to 17 (or my father when he’s painting and off-balance) living at home, having lots of decorations set up for a month means having lots of broken decorations by the New Year.

Moral of the story: keep it tasteful. There’s nothing wrong with loving the holidays and throwing a fake snow globe on your lawn. But people driving by should pause to admire your decorations, not require sunglasses to make it past without smoking into a parked vehicle.

The leak is a reminder of the difficulties facing Tokyo Electric Power Co. as it tries to meet its goal of bringing the tsunamidamaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to a cold shutdown by year’s end.

A pool of radioactive water was discovered midday Sunday around a decontamination device, TEPCO said in a statement on its website. After the equipment was turned off, the leak appeared to stop.

Later, workers found a crack in a concrete barrier leaking the contaminated water into a gutter that leads to the ocean.

Until there is private ownership, there will be no end of Attawapiskats There’s no shortage of ink being expended on the housing situation on the Attawapiskat First Nation and the deplorable state of, well, just about everything. What’s even more unfortunate is that the James Bay First Nation could be stand-in for any number of reserves. It’s a poster child for everything that’s wrong with Canada’s relationships with its First Nations, and the relationship of First Nations people among themselves.

Spending five years working with the Battlefords News-Optimist, it was very hard to stay out of band politics, yet this was something I tried hard to do. Why? It’s not because there weren’t stories, compelling ones at that, but because there was no end to it. You could never get to the bottom of anything.

Like quicksand, as soon as

you stepped in it, there was no bottom, and you would become sucked in until you breathed your last.

One day, during a band election, I got a phone call saying I should go check out a local motel because votes were being bought. So I grabbed my camera bag, drove to said hotel, and soon realized there was no way I could really observe this, because even if there were something going on, it would be indoors. Sure enough, a few years later, there were convictions of election fraud as a result of that election.

I only speak of it now because there were indeed convictions. Of all the hundreds of rumours and allegations I heard over the years, this one was substantiated in a court of law. There was no lack of innuendo for all sides, from the band members to elders to

The band politics often centred around the issues we see at Attawapiskat - housing, who gets running water, education and jobs.

Prior to working with the paper, I was working on a crew installing sewer and water on a local reserve. I could not understand why these people, in 2002, did not have running water. My parents bought a farm in 1979 that didn’t have running water or an electric stove,

either. They burned wood in the stove and carried water in a pail from a hand-pumped well - not too far off the state of some reserves to this day.

Within a year or two they put in an electric stove, well, pump and septic tank.

It took a lot of work, and cost a fair bit of money, but it made a huge difference in their lives.

The National Post’s Jonathan Kay said it far better on Dec. 5 than I could, but to sum up his column, Kay said, “No one ever has washed a rented car.”

When you earn something, and own it, it means something to you. If you keep getting handouts, nothing will ever be of value, and all will soon fall into disrepair.

one simply buy a can of paint and fix up their houses? It’s really not that hard to do.

Asking a few people on the reserve why that didn’t happen, I was told that was the band’s responsibility.

Reserves with communal ownership are some of the last vestiges of communism in the world. Twenty years ago this month, we saw the collapse of the Soviet Union because it doesn’t work. Yet on Canadian First Nations, we practise it every day and expect a different result.

Be it Attawapiskat or any one of hundreds of other First Nations, the fundamental issue is the lack of responsibility. It is the root of everything from the state of housing to band politics to the atrocious number of First Nations people behind bars. Most of those convictions have both the victims and perpetrators being Aboriginal.

Responsibility comes from taking ownership of something, literally and figuratively. That can only be built on a solid foundation of private ownership. The most fundamental thing a person can own is his or her

own home. Even better, they should spend a substantial amount of time and effort working to pay for it, in order to truly appreciate it. And to do that, you must have a job.

When band members actually own their own homes, when they have to sweat blood to make the monthly mortgage payments like pretty much everyone else, they will be more inclined to keep them in repair.

They will not be looking to the band, or the federal government, to fix dilapidated homes, because they will do it themselves. They will also be motivated to improve on their property - drill a well, put in a septic tank or sewer line.

Until something as basic as private ownership of housing becomes reality, there will be no resolution to the ills of Attawapiskat or any other First Nation. When the First Nations peoples, themselves, decide to take this path, and the federal government goes along, then, and only then, we will start to see things turning around.

The Strength of $1.49 The countdown to Christmas is here and from what I witnessed this past weekend, the shopping frenzy has started.

The malls are bursting with people and the hum of conversation almost drowns out the carols that are being played through the internal sound system. The parking lots have become more like scenes from movies like Gone in 60 Seconds or perhaps Smash Up Derby. Finding the perfect spot and securing it, before someone else squeezes in without a nod is quickly becoming the norm.

Everyone seems to be in a rush to get the perfect gift for that special someone. Others have lists as long as their arm, with names scratched out and check marks in the appropriate columns. Simply put, it’s a crazy situation out there.

Gift buying is such a beautiful thing, especially when it’s well thought out and not just a quick pick off the shelf. For many of us, we have been racking our brains for the perfect gift for our children or perhaps grandchildren.

Advertisers are busy sharing their messages about their product through television, flyers and e-mail notifications. They definitely influence us and sometimes help us with our purchasing decisions. Whatever the case may be, there is a message to “buy now”, and that without specific products, both your child/grandchild and you, yourself, will be less of a human being if everyone doesn’t have or purchase the product of the season.

We recently read or heard about the chaos surrounding Black Friday shopping in the United States.

Whenever buying, whether it be during the Christmas season or not, I ask myself and my children to determine whether the decision to purchase is based on a need or a want. I ask this just to give us a moment to pause and to consider.

A few Christmases ago, my youngest (at the time she was 3-and-a-half-years-old) was still at that tender age when the boxes and wrapping paper (post-gift opening) were the most exciting part of Christmas morning. My husband and I had wondered what to give her, we considered the season’s popular Princess Barbie but knew that wasn’t really what made her smile. I think we considered it because advertisers were telling us to, yet it didn’t fit her personality, so what was the point of buying a $40 Barbie just because we felt obliged to.

As Christmas Day approached and the excitement in the house grew with the impending arrival of Santa Claus, my little one found herself drawn to the tree.

She simply couldn’t resist the shiny paper, the well-wrapped gifts shouting “tear me open.”

She joyfully shook every gift and tried her hardest to peek, without tearing the paper. She kept track of the days through her chocolate advent calendar and would check the fireplace (on a regular basis) to make sure Santa’s landing place was acceptable. She was the picture of excitement and

a beautiful example of what Christmas can bring to a heart, whether young or old.

Finally, the morning arrived and it was time to find out what was hidden beneath the shiny paper. Our designated Santa handed out each gift with a “HO-HOHO.” The excitement in the room could have been bottled and sold for a hefty price. My youngest ripped and tore and unwrapped like a wild child.

She squealed with delight when she saw “Darla”, the doll she had been hoping and praying for. There were a few Barbies to add to her collection, however not the expensive and very popular Princess Barbie, yet even these caused her to jump for joy and giggle with excitement.

In that moment, as we watched our three children unwrap their gifts, every lineup we had stood in, every wintery road we had driven on, every hour of wrapping felt so good and was worth it. Thankfully, we hadn’t gone overboard, we didn’t break our budget, yet our kids didn’t miss out on any of the excitement of Christmas.

Finally, a few last little gifts were distributed. My little one was handed a flimsy present that was wrapped in the “left over” pieces of paper because this gift was mostly an afterthought. Mustering the same enthusiasm as she had when opening her doll “Darla”, she tore open this seemingly lesser gift and much to her surprise and overwhelming pleasure it contained a pack of four Hilroy scribblers that cost a total of $1.49. You see, our little one loved (in her words) to do homework. From the time she could hold a pencil, she would write, draw and scribble on any piece of paper she could find. So, in an effort

to keep her homework and art together, we bought her a set of scribblers.

After the lines, the consideration and the conversations about what to get her,

our little girl stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by her new doll, her Barbies, some candies and a few other gifts and exclaimed for all to hear, “This is the

bestest present I ever gotted”.

Can Sidney Crosby win the National Hockey League scoring title this year?

Wow, what an accomplishment that would be, considering he missed the first 20 games of the 82-game schedule amid suggestions he may miss the whole season, or - perish the thought - never play again.

But there he was on Nov. 21, back to his old swashbuckling self, skating circles, winning battles for the puck in the corners, bumping into opponents, taking a couple of hard hits and dominating the game as he did for half of last season when he racked up 66 points by early January and was running away with the scoring race.

The Kid’s come-back game was spectacular: Crosby scored twice and set up two others against the Islanders.

He was blanked in his second game, but then picked up three points in his third outing.

Through seven games, he had 12 points. Taking that average (1.714 points per game) for the remainder of the season (another 55 games) would leave Crosby with 106 points and an outside chance for the Pittsburgh Penguins’superstar to win a scoring title.

Toronto’s Phil Kessel and Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux, the NHL points leaders on the night of Crosby’s return, are on pace for around 105 points.

Normally, expecting anyone to overcome a 30-point head start with one-quarter of the season gone would be foolhardy to suggest, but when you’re dealing with one of the game’s all-time greats - yes, Crosby truly belongs in the hockey stratosphere with Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux and Howe - anything is possible. Hoffmann of Austria, who retired from the sport in 2009, has been given a sixyear ban for blood doping.

The disciplinary committee of NADA, Austria’s anti-doping agency, said Tuesday it found Hoffmann guilty of having his blood taken for doping purposes at a Vienna lab between 2003 and ‘06 and possessing a centrifuge for blood enrichment.

The 36-year-old Hoffmann won gold in the 30-kilometre race at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games and was part of the Austrian relay team that won the world title in 1999. He holds six World Cup titles.

Souris Avenue – Seventh Street to King Street The purpose of this work is to provide timely and cost effective replacement of existing cast iron water main with PVC pipe, replacement of existing water and sanitary sewer services from water & sewer main up to the property line and surface restoration. This work would require closure of immediate areas of excavation and may necessitate parking restriction in adjacent areas. This work will commence during the week of August 22, 2011 (from Seventh Street) and will take approximately Eight (8) to Ten (10) Weeks to complete (subject to weather). Glen Peterson Construction Ltd. will perform this work within the current Bylaw regulations.

Temporary Water Supply Temporary Supply of Water shall be made during the construction through the water tap outside the house during the week of August 22, 2010 (from Seventh Street). This may require crew to enter inside the house to complete the connection. This temporary supply may be connected up to 8 weeks. During this time water pressure may vary, however should not adversely affect appliances that use water. Interruption of water supply may result in some pockets and sediments enter in the plumbing. We advise that when water service is restored, please let each tap in house run for about 30 seconds or until water runs clear. Hot water may require running long enough to completely exchange water in the water heater. The City or the contractor shall not assume any responsibility of damage caused to any appliances such as washer, dishwasher etc, for being connected to temporary water supply.

Home-Cleaning Tips for the Holidays “It’s dirty work, but someone has to do it!” That has been my catchy refrain the past few months while partnering with Scrubbing Bubbles to reveal its fascinating Dirty Work Index data on women’s attitudes and feelings on cleaning their homes. Did you know that 51 percent of women actually avoid going into someone else’s bathroom? I also was surprised to learn that three out of four women say that the cleanliness of their homes speaks volumes about them personally, and 83 percent are prompted to clean if they’re hosting a party or guests in their home. That can put a lot of pressure on one person, especially this time of year!

Now that we’re in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, with guests coming and going in our homes, here are some practical and easy cleaning strategies for busy families: 1. Start with the front door.

To keep dirt and grime out of the house before it gets tracked in, remind kids to leave their boots, shoes, and wet and muddy winter gear at the entryway. When guests pop by, I like to add a bit of humor and suggest that they do the “Cha, Cha, Cha” on the entry mat when they arrive. After a few steps, wiggles and laughs, their shoes are clean before

they step inside.

2. Think of cleaning as exercise.

It can be hard to get everything you want done during these busy days, so make cleaning do double duty when you can’t squeeze in time at the gym.

An active 30 minutes of cleaning can get the blood pumping and heart racing.

Add music to the mix, and it will be done before you know it.

3. Get kids to help.

You don’t have to do all the tasks alone, especially kidfriendly jobs like shaking rugs, taking out the trash and cleaning the bathroom mirrors.

4. Clear the clutter.

Just before guests arrive at a dinner party, wash and put away mixing bowls and utensils, and be sure the counters are sparkling clean. A clutter-free kitchen makes you feel organized and relaxed.

5. Save the night with candlelight.

Perfection isn’t everything. If you throw a last-minute get-together, don’t worry about dusting every corner. Simply dim lamps and light candles.

There is something about candlelight that makes everything glow.

6. Holiday helpers ring in the new year.

When packing holiday decorations in boxes until next year, make it a family affair. Laugh together, tell stories and share cups of cocoa while you get another cleanup job done! *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s
