Far left, Sergeant-at-Arms Chris Bird presents the newly installed officers at the Legion’s pastpresidents banquet. From second to left are Len Millar, Joe Heidinger and John Gulak. Not present are Romuald Kawecki and Gary LeBlanc.

Call to arms for nextgeneration Legion members It’s time to pass the Royal Canadian Legion’s torch to the next generation by laying a foundation of good communication. That was part of the message given by Peter Piper, the provincial pastpresident, when he spoke at the Estevan Legion’s past president’s night on Saturday at the Memorial Hall. “It’s good to be back in Estevan again and to honour your past-presidents,” said Piper. “They have been a wealth to your whole branch.” He continued however, with a note of caution and a message that the future holds no certainty. “But in saying that, behind every good thing, we have the odd negative thing. We need leaders that will bring new members in and mentor them to become legionnaires.” Piper has been a legionnaire for 33 years, including 10 years with Provincial Command. He

said mentorship is the key to continuing the Legion in the traditions it has grown. “We’ve had to mentor a lot of people along the way, and I’ve had mentors on my way, and only too glad they were there. I know tonight is a happy night, and I want it to be that way.” He said he was speaking to those most dedicated to the Legion, who must make strides in continuing to ensure prosperity. “They are the lifeblood of this organization. Without you as members, without you as presidents, leaders, we’d have nothing. We would fold.” Piper said he is upset to see what is happening in some of the branches he goes to, but he was encouraged by the younger faces he saw at the Estevan banquet, challenging them to become leaders in the organization. “To become a good leader, you’ve got have good communication

skills. From the top, it works its way down. Everybody says things run downhill, well that’s right. Let’s mentor these people and help them become good, strong legionnaires. Without you, the lifeblood of the organization, we won’t have a Legion. It’s that simple.” Eileen Rosner, the Estevan Legion Branch No. 60 president, echoed Piper’s sentiments saying that, “we’re getting to be an older group, and we need the younger ones to take over,” She then went over some matters of importance from 2011, noting that for three months, they gave the Red Cross the use of the Jubilee Room, which set up there to help flood victims in the spring. She noted the organization’s participation in the opening of Spectra Place, before lamenting some of the problems they are now encountering with their building.

“As you all know, we had water damage in the club room, which we had to repair. We also had four compressors burn out in a matter of six weeks, and now we just had to replace a new water heater. It just seems this old building is nickel and diming us to death,” she said. While there will still be bingo at the Legion, Rosner noted they have shut down Wednesday afternoon bingo, as it was starting to cost them money. She celebrated the success of the poppy campaign however, noting that they raised $22,606.21, and with that, they donated $2,500 to Creighton Lodge for furniture purchases. At the end of the night, the local branch installed three new officers. Major Len Millar, Joe Heidinger and John Gulak were all installed as officers along with Romuald Kawecki and Gary LeBlanc who were absent from the banquet.

YouTube is big, and it’s well known that nobody likes it more than Canada. As it turns out, it’s big in the same way the universe is big: it’s unfathomable. I read a Time Magazine article about YouTube, and the lead floored me: “For every minute that passes in real time, 60 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube.” Can that really be a sustainable pace? It must be if the year before we uploaded just 48 hours of video per minute. They unroll that figure further to point out that means 10 years of video are uploaded each day. In a month, all YouTube users consume about 340,000 years of video combined. That’s roughly 340,000 more years than recorded human history. My trusty calculator says that’s just over four million years per year. So in a year, it’s like we watch every minute of history from this point all the way back to when Lucy was around and still have time to check out what was happening for another million years prior. The numbers put forth are mindboggling, especially considering most individual uploaders are not making any money of off what they post. Sure there are channels on the video-search engine that one can subscribe to, but the vast

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers majority of what people watch, cats and babies, is just amateur video of nothing of any particular importance. People keep watching anyway. Television networks are always looking for ways to make the shows they air cheaper. They made a big move away from serialized shows toward reality-based ones. The next step is just airing mindless amateur video. It’s like America’s Funniest Home Videos without Bob Saget on the payroll, and no prize money to dish out. It’s just Charlie Bit My Finger and cat-breading for an hour after the news. Something called the Nyan Cat went viral last April and has since been viewed nearly 63 million times and spawned spinoffs like the Smooth Jazz Cover and multiple “extended editions.” A 100-hour long version of the video has been viewed 3.8 million times. I really hope YouTube

counts only page views and not how many times the video was played in its entirety. One hundred hours of a simple GIF image that was “borrowed” and a Japanese song, which I assume is copyrighted, would be a great way for a major network to use up a block of time. They could run the video straight through the week between commercials and people can tune in until they just need to tell their parents they love them. Or they can run it as 100 hour-long episodes each week for two years. YouTube, I always thought, was a bit of an enigma. I think it’s great. It’s a great place for information. Think of the difference in coverage of Tahrir Square a year ago, from a 24-hour news service to just some Egyptian guy who was there with his cellphone. He can post unedited, raw video of what was happening, and that’s an important resource for all of us. I also think it’s great that things like Nyan Cat are up there. I laughed at it for about a minute before shutting it off and spending the next 10 minutes trying to forget what I saw. The mystery is, in fact, people. If you don’t agree, go watch the Nyan Cat like 63 million people before you, and explain how that became a thing.

Investment in agriculture a must If there is one thing I have written about before which I see as critical to the future of farming, at least as we know it, it is a public investment in varietal crop development. It is great to see major corporations involved in crop research, but the result of that work often comes with substantial costs. It’s not that making a profit on its research doesn’t make business sense, but those profits can limit a farmer’s options, ranging from herbicides used on crop varieties with such gene technology, to how a crop is marketed or held over for planting in future years. Farmers need to have options, and while corporate varieties work for many and are an important aspect of development as we move forward, there remains a place for public dollars to be at work as well. Public dollars should be led by farmers themselves. Check-offs on crop sales which coop dollars for investment in research are hugely important as they provide farmers with some direct say in what research takes place. Whoever controls the purse strings has a lot to say about the direction research takes. Farmer dollars also show their commitment, and that often helps convince government to invest tax dollars in public research as well.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist It is, of course, important that governments, both federally and provincially, make that investment. While some in large cities might question why tax dollars go to creating better wheat, ultimately such research helps to ensure farmers will be able to continue to feed a growing population. Varieties with better yields, or the ability to fight disease, to be resistant to insects, etc., all give farmers a better chance of meeting the food needs of a growing world population. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall touched on that need recently when he announced $10 million in new funding for wheat-related research over five years. The funding will go toward research projects that accelerate the development of wheat varieties and improve yield, quality and tolerance to disease and extreme weather conditions. “It’s time to put wheat back on top again,” Wall said in a news release regarding the funding. “Early varieties like Marquis made farming worthwhile in all

but the most inhospitable parts of the Prairies. It allowed the Prairies to become the breadbasket of the British Empire for the next 100 years. It’s time to recapture that leadership, so Saskatchewan can help feed a hungry planet.” Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture Bob Bjornerud picked up on the same theme. “We have some of the best producers in the world in Saskatchewan and we are committed to investing in research to address their needs,” said Bjornerud in the same release. “This increased research funding will lead to new wheat varieties which will ultimately create long-term benefits for Saskatchewan farmers.” Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association chair Gerrid Gust spoke for the farm industry in welcoming the research dollars. “Wheat has always been an important crop for Saskatchewan farmers and research is critical to our future,” he said. “We are very pleased with this new funding which will give farmers the opportunity to increase profits and help our industry remain competitive in the world marketplace.” Certainly Wall’s announcement should be seen as a worthwhile investment in not just the province’s economy, but in ensuring a food supply for all.

If I were a man I’d eat everything I heard a question on the radio last week: if you woke up as a member of the other gender, what would you do? Hearing this, I thought of the old Lindsay Lohan movie, Freaky Friday, in which mother and daughter switch bodies and are forced to live out each other’s lives. Both parties were extremely shocked and upset by the switch, though they slowly seemed to get over the change and find ways to deal as a new person. If I woke up as a guy,

I don’t think the surprise would ever wear off. I’d be shocked 24/7, or at least until things reverted back to normal. I’ve been thinking about the first things I would do, assuming I had a couple of hours as a male. First, I’d get dressed up super nice. Because, let’s be real people, girls often know what looks better on guys than guys do. And by that I mean that your saggy jeans and skate shoes probably aren’t doing it for the female population. So if I

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me was a guy, I’d make sure I had a decent wardrobe to work with. I’d also get a good haircut. Maybe a nice hat. Seriously, there are so many options. Second, I’d go out and

try to make women super uncomfortable. As in, I’d be that guy smiling at you no matter where you look in the mall, or who just happens to follow you all the way around town. Just

Play indoor hopscotch with carpet squares Hop, skip and jump onto your own hopscotch game everyone can play indoors using sample carpet squares. It’s a great way to let out energy and get some exercise when the kids are cooped up on a rainy or snowy day. If you live near a carpet store, ask for discarded sample squares, which are usually free of charge. Choose samples that are approximately 10 inches by 12 inches in a variety of fun, playful colors. You’ll need at least 10 for a standard game of hopscotch. When you get home, cut rubber shelf liner into 10-inch squares the size of the carpet squares. Glue

the shelf-liner pieces onto the backsides of the carpet squares to help keep the squares from slipping and skidding around as the kids jump. Paint the numbers 1 through 10 on the tops of the squares using acrylic or latex paints. When dry, grab some flat stones for markers, and the kids will be ready and eager to play. Or, while the kids are waiting for the paint to dry,

they can make their own personalized game markers. Cut out school pictures of each child who is going to play hopscotch, and glue the photos onto one side of a flat frozen-orange-juice lid with smooth sides. When it’s time to play, toss it “face up” onto a square. To play, set the squares on the floor in a hopscotch pattern, and hop away! Or invent your own games and encourage your kids to practice their numbers while they play. Join in with the kids and enjoy one of the oldest and simplest children’s games around. Like playing jacks, you might quickly remember that you were either good at it and loved to play ... or not! When the game is over, pick up the squares of this portable hopscotch and stack them neatly in a cupboard or closet until another indoor play day. Alternative idea: Instead of a portable hopscotch, tape the squares together on the backside in the formation you choose using duct tape. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. for fun. This would be even weirder if it were a girl. I’d also try to cry my way out of a speeding ticket. I know lots of girls that this has worked for. Achieving this as a male would be a spectacular accomplishment, and a check mark for equality between the sexes. I’ve posed this question to a handful of people, as well. One replied that he didn’t know, and I’ve taken that to mean that his answer probably isn’t PG-13. Another male friend told me that he’d absolutely panic, and that would be that. The best answer I’ve received is from a friend of mine who said that, given the chance to be a guy for a period of time, she would eat everything in sight, because guys seem to be able to eat a whole heck of a lot more than women, and the calories from that food don’t seem to build up around their butts and thighs. a perfect food vacation, wherein all those forbidden french fries and chocolate brownies are fully at your mercy, at least until you turn back into a girl. I’m actually curious about what guys would do. It isn’t that much fun to have to wear skirts and heels to work, as I’ve pointed out. Long hair gets caught in all kinds of things, and costs a fair bit of money to keep cut and coloured. Having to stand on a chair so you can reach the pickle jar at the back of the cupboard is both depressing and dangerous. I don’t think there are many men out there who could handle it. success of an athlete?

He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker

There are many variables that affect an athlete’s success, but location is just one of them. Even date of birth has an impact on success, if you subscribe to some of the ideas in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers. He said that the theory that the best hockey players were born in the first quarter of the year first came about from someone looking at rosters in a program at a junior game. The phenomenon wasn’t strictly hockey players. He pointed to other sports as well, like soccer, in which being born in the first four months of the year was a big factor in future success. This, of course, doesn’t mean that if you were born in July or November, don’t play hockey because you have no chance of ever being good at it. It just means that the amount of control over how much you succeed is, as it turns out, limited. Geography is another one of those things we have little control over, though this factor is more malleable, as long as you have the resources to move. We are looking specifically at Mark McMorris, who left the Saskatchewan flatlands to win gold medals for snowboarding in much more mountainous territory. Location matters, but it’s never been so easy to travel to a location that helps rather than hinders. It’s become much less important in the last 50 years. There are always those exceptional people who will succeed no matter what. McMorris is clearly a determined individual. When he sees that gentle bump on the Saskatchewan horizon, he probably really envisions a snow-capped peak. Maybe for McMorris, living on the flattest spot on the planet didn’t matter. For most of us however, if we strapped a snowboard to our feet, we’d just be standing motionlessly in the backyard.

Macaroni and Cheese with Beef 1 tablespoon salad oil 1 medium onion, chopped 1 medium green pepper, chopped 1 pound lean ground beef 2 cans (15-ounce) tomato sauce 3/4 package (16-ounce) mostaccioli or

ziti macaroni 1 package (8-ounce, 2 cups) shredded Cheddar cheese 1. In 12-inch skillet over medium heat, in hot salad oil, cook onion and green pepper until tender. Stir in ground beef; over medium-high heat, cook until pan juices evaporate and meat is browned; spoon off fat if any. Stir

NEW TO ESTEVAN. NEW OPPORTUNITIES. NEW OFFICE.

By: Tonaya Marr

Many of you have probably heard about Mark McMorris and his dual gold medals at the X Games a couple of weeks ago. A prairie boy from Regina went to Aspen, Colorado and won a snowboarding competition. This is especially exciting when one considers how few mountains we have surrounding Regina. And by few, I mean none, though Mission Ridge does a nice job of pretending. So this begs the question: does where you grow up and train affect your athletic career? Of course, McMorris isn’t the only athlete to be successful outside of his geographic area. Consider that the NHL has teams from California and other warm-climate locations. There are talented swimmers from countries that have no natural unfrozen bodies of water. And there was that Jamaican bobsled team, right? Cool Runnings, or something? With all this evidence before me, I’ve decided that location can’t affect an athlete’s ability. If an athlete has skill, then he/she has skill. No one can say that McMorris isn’t talented. But I think that what must be kept in mind is that a person can have all the natural ability in the world, but without the means to practice and cultivate that skill, being talented is pretty irrelevent. Hypothetically, a young, aspiring hockey player may dream of making it big some day. But if he can’t afford equipment, is unable to make it to a rink and doesn’t have a league in which to participate, the likelihood of him becoming the lead point scorer for an NHL team isn’t very good. For McMorris, he had the circumstances, plus the talent, to be successful as a snowboarder. There are probably other young people in Saskatchewan with the same amount of ability, the same amount of raw talent as McMorris, but without some other variable, be it financial or motivational.

One girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure I’m not sure how many readers in the Estevan neck of the woods would know my late father. His name was Graham Taylor and he was a wonderful father and grandfather. For those of you who did know my father, you would know that he loved a good garage sale. He would drive miles to pick through odds and ends. Never did a sale go by that he didn’t return with a treasure chest (actually it was his red truck) bursting with gidgets and gadgets. Sometimes he would even return with the odd live animal or perhaps a dishwasher for a cool $5 or a much needed tea set. You never knew what would accompany him on his return. He loved garage sales and would often marvel at what people would sell. He would giggle away as he shared stories about buying a crystal water jug for $2. He would tell us how he was sure the seller had no idea it was crystal and what a steal he got. Then, of course, there were the old books that now line the shelves of my mother’s home. My father was a man who loved the written word. He knew his grandchildren loved to read as well and for him, finding a box of classics on a table for $10 was hard to pass up. I must admit, just last night my daughter cracked the cover of one of his book buys. She loves to read them and is reminded of him with every page she turns. Every once in awhile, the kids are surprised with a handwritten note on the inside. Grandpa always made sure he documented things, even down to the smallest of events, and here my kids are treated with yet another memory of a great man. While we were living in Wolseley (a few years ago), there was a garage sale in town. Dad was up and wanted to get there early because he knew it was going to be a good sale. The lady hosting it had three children, so my father knew that there would kids’ toys and more. He wanted to dive in and make a few purchases that would put smiles on his grandchildren’s faces. My mum and I stayed home and let my dad have his fun. After about 30 minutes of being away. we heard the kitchen door open. There was laughter and the kids were anxious to see what grandpa had bought. He pulled out toys and trinkets, and of course, books. There was one purchase that seemed a little odd, almost like the saying “one of those things is

not like the other.” He had bought a pair of mukluks for $1. He pulled the mukluks out, and with perfect form created an impromptu presentation ceremony and presented them to my daughter Sophia. You see, my father knew how much Sophia loved fashion. He saw something in these used mukluks that said “Sophia.” To my surprise my daughter squealed with excitement, wrapped her arms around grandpa’s neck and thanked him over and over. Now, fast-forward three years and these well-used mukluks have been, since the first day of receiving them, her everyday shoes. She has been stopped by the most fashionable women in shops and on the streets of many cities and asked where she purchased them. Mothers at school comment on her style and how much they like them, and her girlfriends ask to borrow them. Who would have guessed that a pair of $1 mukluks bought from a garage sale could create such conversation - and in some cases even coveting. This past weekend our family was in Edmonton attending our son’s soc-

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life cer tournament. Between games we braved the West Edmonton Mall for some retail therapy. While shopping, my daughter was (once again) stopped in her tracks by a fellow female shopper and was asked where she got her mukluks. She responded by saying, “My grandfather bought them for me for $1 at a garage sale.” The girl’s face flashed with shock and responded by saying, “I’ll buy them from you for $50,” to which Sophia replied, “No thank you, I really like them.” We parted ways and as we did, we marvelled at the lure of these mukluks. We carried on shopping and an hour later bumped into the same girl again. This time she greeted Sophia with, “OK, I really want those mukluks. Can I offer you $100 right now and you can go

and buy any new shoes you want?” Sophia graciously replied, “Thank you, but no thanks, these are really special to me.” We parted ways and again we marvelled at the conversation surrounding the handmade footwear.

Who would have thought that my father’s $1 purchase at a garage sale would create so much conversation. As her mother, I’m not sure that it’s the mukluks that really shine. Rather, I believe it’s the beautiful girl who walks in them that gives them their lustre. These mukluks are special because they were the last gift my father ever gave my daughter. The gift had almost no monetary value to it but it was a gift from the heart. My father SAW who my daughter really was, he took the time to

know her and now through these $1 mukluks and the attention they bring, she is reminded every time she wears them how much she was, and is loved. She is reminded of how her grandfather saw her and that’s a gift that no one can buy, no one can ever take away or touch because it’s locked in the secret place in her heart. One girl’s trash truly can be another girl’s treasure. Susan J Sohn blogtalkradio.com/ getreallive susanjsohn.com

More money coming for the sign guy The last decade has been a good time to be in the sign business, especially if one of your clients has been the local credit union. Most recently, Estevanbased Spectra Credit Union stated in a press release its board of directors unanimously passed a motion to seek a merger partner and/ or co-operative partnership opportunities. Proposals will be requested that will ultimately result in province-wide service for our members, while maintaining a strong credit union presence in southeastern

Saskatchewan. Indeed, it wasn’t that long ago that a sign proclaiming Spectra Place was placed on the new arena in Estevan. I wonder what they’re going to call it now? This is part of a wave of corporatization that has swept Saskatchewan over the last 20 years, and has accelerated in the last 10. At first was the growth of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, who grew so big for their britches, they had to drop “Saskatchewan” “Wheat” and “Pool,” each for different reasons, and call

• I used to struggle with plastic wrap every time I tried to use it. But now it’s a breeze since I learned to do these two things: One, keep plastic wrap in the freezer. It unrolls evenly, not one side or the other. Two, use a serrated knife to cut it instead of relying on the metal strip down the side of the box. You lay it out on the counter, and just run the knife down the edge you want to cut. Works

like magic, and it’s no longer frustrating. -- G.S. in Georgia • Store an apple or two with your potatoes to keep them from sprouting. Be sure to check them often. • Cut cotton pads in half to double your supply. They typically are big enough for two uses, and you can always use two halves if you need a whole. • “Make a creme lipstick last longer and stay cleaner by using a makeup brush to apply it. Your skin picks up more of the lipstick than necessary, one reason why we blot our lips afterward. But the brush uses only what you need. And there’s less

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile themselves Viterra. This went hand-in-hand with the rise of the corporate farm. I’ve personally interviewed a farmer whose family, through their corporation, cultivates in excess of 17,000 acres. There’s little room left for the little bacteria transfer.” -- Y.R. in Massachusetts • File this one under safety AND energy smarts: Clean the dryer vent after every load. guy, with tighter margins requiring more land to make a go of it. Local health boards became health districts and now health regions. A similar sweeping consolidation dramatically reduced the number of school divisions in this province. The first was accomplished by the NDP, the second by the Sask. Party. What remains? Local co-ops and rural municipalities are on deck. There has been some consolidation of co-ops over the years, but not nearly to the extent the credit unions or wheat pools (Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba) have seen. It seems inevitable this, too, will come to pass. As for municipalities, the provincial government has been slowly prodding the RMs to merge on their own accord. This goes well back into the NDP days. However, there are still far

too many municipalities for a province this size. I was speaking to a vicepresident of a small, private oil company the other day about the numerous hoops set up by differing municipalities and how that impacts running a business. Each RM is trying to find its way in dealing with the rising costs of road maintenance due to increasing oilfield truck traffic. Often they are seeking road maintenance agreements, getting the oil companies to pay. But for the oil companies, it’s a pain in the neck to deal with when their operation spans hundreds of miles, but the rules change every 18 miles. Larger units, like, oh, say the counties in Alberta, would make things a lot easier. If you overlaid the school division map with the health region map, you’ll see how these counties could take shape. But with overwhelming support in the countryside for the Saskatchewan Party, don’t expect them to shake this up any time soon. It’s gotta be tough for the self-respecting, card-carrying CCF-types to deal with this corporate consolidation. There is no longer a place for someone who might have

been a wheat pool delegate, co-op member and board member of the local credit union for years. Maybe commiserate with the recently un-elected NDP candidate at the co-op cafeteria. Credit unions have stepped up to the plate across the province in supporting community initiatives, buying naming rights everywhere. You can see a concert at the Conexus Arts (Regina), watch a game at the Credit Union Centre (Saskatoon), hear the opera at TCU Place (also Saskatoon), stroll through a trade show at Spectra place (Estevan), or eventually go swimming at the Credit Union CU Plex (North Battleford). What happens when these all merge into the Saskatchewan Credit Union? For one, they’re going to have a hard time differentiating venues when everything is Saskatchewan Credit Union Arts Centre/Place/ Arena/Plex/etc. For the sign guy, it will mean at least one more round of new sales. He probably can’t wait. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian.zinchuk@ sasktel.net

Essential service nurse legislation unconstitutional tion until it is fixed. NATIONAL OTTAWA - A Conservative senator backed off slightly on an unconventional proposal last Wednesday for reducing prison costs: give serial murderers a rope and let them decide whether to hang themselves. “Basically, every killer should (have) the right to his own rope in his cell. They can decide whether to live,” Sen. Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu said, referring to people who “had no hope of rehabilitation.” A few hours later, after an outcry from the opposition and a flurry of media interest, Boisvenu issued a statement saying the comment was inappropriate and that he withdrew it. Yet later in the day, he said it should apply to only “three or four guys.”

The comment about hanging came on the same day an awareness campaign was launched on youth mental health, in memory of young Ottawa suicide victim Daron Richardson. There have also been a number of recent, highprofile prison suicides in Quebec. *** OTTAWA - The federal government has directed Canada’s spy agency to use information that may have been extracted through torture in cases where public safety is at stake. The order represents a reversal of policy for the Conservative government, which once insisted the Canadian Security Intelligence Service would discard information if there was any inkling it might be tainted. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has quietly told CSIS the government

now expects the spy service to “make the protection of life and property its overriding priority.” A copy of the two-page December 2010 directive was obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act. *** TWILLINGATE, N.L. - A Newfoundland school board is investigating after one of its teachers sprayed a 10-year-old boy with an air freshener because of his fried fish lunch. The Nova Central School District has confirmed the boy was sprayed last Thursday in Twillingate. The boy’s mother, Patti Rideout, says her son was teased by classmates for smelling fishy before the teacher sprayed him. She says the teacher should apologize and be fired. The school board has placed the teacher on paid leave while it conducts its investigation. INTERNATIONAL

PHILADELPHIA - Japanese competitiveeating champ Takeru Kobayashi ate a record 337 chicken wings in 30 minutes before a crowd of nearly 20,000 at Wing Bowl XX in the U.S. He demolished the record of 255 set last year by Jonathan “Super” Squibb. The Friday morning contest in Philadelphia drew thousands to watch competitors stuff themselves with chicken wings. Kobayashi claimed a $20,000 cash prize. *** SAN FRANCISCO - A federal appeals court on Tuesday declared California’s same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, putting the bitterly contested, voter-approved law on track for likely consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that a lower court judge correctly interpreted the U.S. Con-

stitution when he declared in 2010 that Proposition 8 was a violation of the civil rights of gays and lesbians. The passage of the ban followed the most expensive campaign on a social issue in U.S. history. *** TEHRAN, Iran - Iran’s parliament on Tuesday decided to summon President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for questioning over a long list of accusations, including that he mismanaged the nation’s economy. The summons was the first of its kind for an Iranian president since 1979. It follows a petition by a group of lawmakers for a review of policy decisions by Ahmadinejad, who has come under increasing attacks in recent months from the same hard-liners who brought him to power. It is also part of a power struggle on the Iranian political scene ahead of March 2 parliamentary elections and the 2013 presidential vote.

PROVINCIAL REGINA - Saskatchewan nurses say the prognosis for the negotiation of essential services agreements is unclear after a court ruling. Nurses and their employers are in the middle of talks to create a list of workers who will be considered essential in the event of a strike. Provincial legislation says they have to negotiate the list, but if they can’t agree, employers can dictate who is essential. But a judge ruled Monday that the legislation goes too far and is unconstitutional. Saskatchewan Union of Nurses president Rosalee Longmoore says the group is now trying to sort out what impact the ruling has on the current discussions. Labour Minister Don Morgan has said unions will be obliged to work under the existing legisla-

Big overhaul needed for NHL all-star game The 12-9 final score in the recent National Hockey League all-star game in which there were 21 more goals scored than body checks delivered, proves once again that something should be done to make the annual “classic” more like a real game. The hilarity of it all is that there are probably casual fans in the United States who tune in faithfully to the NHL all-star game - and it’s the only game they see all year and think the high-scoring, no-checking, laugh-filled game is standard NHL fare. It’s a real NHL hockey game in the same fashion as travelling in a Honda Civic at 110 km/h on the Trans-Canada Highway is like a NASCAR race. On Feb. 1, the second day of post-all-star game action, five NHL games were played, with a total of 20 non-shootout goals being scored. Now that’s the low-scoring, tightchecking, hard-hitting,

great-goaltending NHL we know and love. A 12-9 laugher is a disgrace to the game and the league should do something about it. How about cancelling it? Tw o o t h e r s p o r t s leagues have similar problems with their “best-ofthe-best” contests. The NBA’s biggest and best play a game that resembles a Saturday morning schoolyard scrum. Last year ’s final score was 148-143, with more uncontested shots than there were competitor tattoos. Football’s Pro Bowl is such a joke that players from the best two teams the Super Bowl contestants - can’t play because they’re preparing for the big game. The only all-star game with a hint of legitimacy is that of Major League Baseball. Not only does it resemble a real game (other than the frequency of substitutions, especially on the mound), but there’s something to play for:

Barach: “A woman was arrested after reportedly trying to extort Yankees GM Brian Cashman. Now Cashman knows how fans feel when they go to buy a hot dog and beer at a Yankees game.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Gisele Bundchen sent an e-mail asking people to pray for Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. Sure thing Gisele. But if the man upstairs was inclined to answer my prayers, you wouldn’t be married to Tom.” • Currie again: “Reports say Dirk Nowitzki has been out of the Mavericks’ lineup. He’s been slowed by a balky knee and a bulky wallet.” • Among the top 10 questions to ask yourself before spending $16,000 on a Super Bowl ticket, from CBS’s David Letterman: “Do they have

anything in the more affordable $15,000 range?” • NBC’s Jimmy Fallon, on Americans eating 450 million chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday: “Or as Thanksgiving turkeys put it, ‘Who’s laughing now, chickens?’” • Headline at Fark. com: “How to avoid a concussion in an MMA fight. Step 1: Don’t be in an MMA fight.” • Philadelphia 76ers CEO Adam Aron, to AP, on his team’s 10-2 start at home after going 12-29 there last season: “Our confetti budget is going through the roof.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) WorldHerald, on rapper 50 Cent saying he won $500,000 betting on the Giants to beat the 49ers: “I’d be tempted to say 50 Cent has terrifi c luck, except for the fact he’s been shot something like 37 times.” • Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe, on the birthplace of Minnesota Wild defenceman Justin Falk, Snowflake, Manitoba: “A town where no two people look alike.” • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, after Jeff

Fisher chose to coach the Rams instead of the Dolphins: “That’s sort of like choosing the beets over the brussels sprouts.” • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “One TV guy referred to Ryan Theriot as a “Punchand-Judy hitter.” He hit one homer last year, so I don’t see the Punch part.” • Ostler again: “Tim Tebow won’t play in the Pebble Beach AT&T, and that’s too bad. Now there’s nothing to hold back the storms.” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement that ‘Peyton Manning, Jim Irsay and the entire Colts family remain close and unified.’ Sounds like Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian on the 60th or so day of their marriage.” • Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “Don’t want to say Madonna was too old to perform at halftime of the Super Bowl, but in Vegas you could have got 30-1 odds on her breaking a hip.” Care to comment? Bruce Penton Sports Columnist The winning team earns home-field advantage for its league in that year’s World Series. Slumping TV ratings for the NHL all-star game should be a clear signal to Gary Bettman and Co. that a change should be instituted. How about this (as proposed on a recent satellite radio show): Merge the league’s two goofy games (the outdoor Winter Classic and the all-star game), get the silliness out of the way in one package, and then settle back for the stretch run to the Stanley Cup. Anything has to be better than the crap the league dished out in Ottawa two weeks ago. • Comedy writer Jim

Seeding the Future Q: Why do seed companies -- those selling small amounts of seeds to backyard gardeners like me -- send their catalogs so early? I started receiving them at the end of December. -- Darla J., Cleveland A: Catalogs are sent early to give you plenty of time to plan this year’s garden and order your seeds, of course. While we tend to be preoccupied in January and February with shoveling snow and staying warm, February is prime time for ordering seeds. Most companies make their shipments this month. It’s also just a nice, quiet time of year for most homeowners, right after the holidays and before

spring lawn care and exterior house repairs gear up. So this is a great time to sit down with your catalogs or browse the Web looking for ideas on things to grow and ways to configure your garden. One of my favorite Web sites is A Way to Garden (http://awaytogarden.com), which features plenty of advice for gardeners of all levels, as well as video and pictorial instructions, podcasts and other fun. It’s a good place to start if you’re new to researching gardening and

No rice in rice paper • Despite all the cartoons you’ve seen throughout your life, rabbits generally prefer greens to carrots, and mice would rather eat grains and fruit than cheese. • Rice paper is not made from rice. It’s made from the pith of the rice paper plant. • You may be surprised to learn that, according to the National Sleep Foundation, 33 percent of all preschoolers have a TV in their room, and 20 percent of infants and toddlers have one. • If you ever make a trip to Italy (lucky you!) and visit the town of Modena, be

sure to go to the bell tower. There you might see an item that is, to the best of my knowledge, unique in the world: a wooden bucket that started a war. In 1325 a group of soldiers from the then-city-state of Modena raided rival city-state Bologna and returned home with the bucket. Greatly desiring to get the bucket back, Bologna declared war. The war raged on for years, but Bologna never did get its bucket back. *** Thought for the Day: “A committee is a culde-sac down which ideas are lured and then quietly strangled.” -- Sir Barnett Cocks (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

seeds on the Web. If you want to do something more than sowing herbs or struggling with tomatoes (not saying other people struggle to get big red tomatoes, but I sure do), look into planting vegetables or flowers native to your area. For example, residents of coastal Virginia or Maryland might want to look at Annapolis Seeds (http://www.annapolisseeds.com/), which produces seeds native to the Maritimes. A number of online garden planners also are out there. These can help you lay out and plan your outdoor garden, offer hints and ideas, and generally make this stage of gardening more fun, or as fun as it can be when you’re anxious to get outside and start turning over dirt. HOME TIP: Have an old, leaky garden hose you don’t know what to do with? Use a section of hose as a blade guard for a hand saw. Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame class announced NATIONAL WINNIPEG - General manager Joe Mack and quarterback Buck Pierce have re-signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Mack’s extension will take him through the 2014 season. Details of Pierce’s agreement weren’t available but he was scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 16. Pierce is entering his eight CFL season and third with Winnipeg. Mack is also in the third year of his second stint with the Bombers. *** ST. MARYS, Ont. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame is unveiling its Class of 2012. Rusty Staub, Doug Melvin, Rheal Cormier and the 2011 Canadian senior national team will be inducted this June. Staub, a native of New Orleans was a six-time allstar who played 518 games for the Montreal Expos over his career.

Melvin, from Chatham, Ont., has served as the general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers since 2002 and was named Baseball Executive of the Year for 2011 by Baseball America. Cormier, a Moncton native, pitched 16 years in the major leagues. The Canadian team won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Cup and earned its first-ever gold medal at the Pan Am Games last fall. *** TO R O N TO - R o mance appears to reign supreme in Kingston. The eastern Ontario city takes the crown on the third annual list of the 20 most romantic cities in Canada. For a second consecutive year, Guelph, Ont., landed in the runner-up spot in the rankings by Amazon.ca, while Kelowna, B.C., came in third place. They’re followed by Oakville, Ont., Victo-

ria, Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, Kamloops, B.C., and St. John’s, N.L. Rounding out the top 20 are: Richmond Hill, Ont., Red Deer, Alta., Langley, B.C., and Winnipeg, followed by five Ontario cities — Burlington, Thunder Bay, Barrie, Brantford and London — and Burnaby, B.C. The online retailer bases its list by comparing sales data of romance novels, sex and relationship books, romantic comedy DVDs and CDs by Canadian crooner Michael Buble since Jan. 1 on a per capita basis in cities with more than 80,000 residents. *** Five members of the Toronto Rock will play for the eastern squad and four members of the Edmonton Rush will take part for the western squad in the National Lacrosse League all-star game. The contest will be

held Feb. 25 in Buffalo, N.Y. The league has announced the additional 24 players who will join the game starters, who were announced Monday. *** NAPANEE, Ont. British Columbia’s Kesa Van Osch moved into sole possession of first place at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior women’s curling championship after a 10-2 rout of New Brunswick’s Jennifer Armstrong. Van Osch needed only seven ends to complete the win and improve to 7-1 after 13 draws. Alberta’s Jocelyn Peterman fell into a three-way tie for second place after dropping an 8-7 decision to Nova Scotia’s Emily Dwyer. The two rinks are joined by Manitoba’s Shannon Birchard at 6-2, who defeated Saskatchewan’s Kristen Streifel 7-4. INTERNATIONAL CAIRO - Egypt internationals and Al-Ahly players Mohamed Aboutrika, Emad Moteab and Mohamed Barakat say they have retired from all football after witnessing the deadly clashes between

fans at their league game against Al-Masry on Wednesday. Aboutrika and Moteab told Al-Ahly TV that they would not play again after the mass violence that left at least 74 people dead at a stadium in the Mediterranean city of Port Said. Midfielder Barakat didn’t rule out returning one day, but told the channel he refused to play until there was “retribution for the people that died.” Aboutrika and Barakat started the game against Al-Masry, while Moteab was a substitute. Al-Ahly’s Portuguese coach Manuel Jose has also reportedly asked the Cairo club to cancel his contract and allow him to return to Portugal. *** MADRID - Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 Tour de France title Monday and banned for two years after sport’s highest court found the Spanish cyclist guilty of doping. The Court of Arbitration for Sport suspended the three-time Tour champion after rejecting his claim that his positive test for clenbuterol was

caused by eating contaminated meat. The three-man CAS panel upheld appeals by the International Cycling Union and World AntiDoping Agency, which challenged a Spanish cycling tribunal’s decision last year to exonerate Contador. *** THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Volunteers poured onto frozen rivers and lakes in the northern Netherlands on Tuesday to shovel away snow that is one of the major hurdles in the way of a gruelling speedskating race being held for the first time in 15 years. Helpers arrived from as far afield as Amsterdam, more than 100 kilometres away, to clear the ice after organizers of the Elfstedentocht, or 11 Cities Tour, warned that snow that fell Friday was hampering ice growth. Their enthusiasm reflected the Elfstedentocht fever that has gripped the Netherlands amid speculation that the cold snap that has brought misery to much of Europe could deliver ecstasy to the Netherlands in the form of the race being skated for the first time since 1997.

Playoffs underway in Big Six It’s playoff time now in the Big Six Hockey League with the best-of-five quarterfinal series kicking off on Tuesday. Three games were played Jan. 7, and aside from the Bienfait, Lampman series, the games look like they’ll be close. The Bienfait Coalers are looking for a championship repeat, something they haven’t done since the late 1980s, and they started things off well, clobbering the Imperials 10-1 in Lampman. The first-place Coalers will host the next two games on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. The Oxbow Huskies, who finished seventh, stole game one from the ArcolaKisbey Combines in their own rink. The Combines were an offensive force this year, leading the league in goals scored but couldn’t get things to the back of the net, suffering a 2-1 loss. Oxbow

will try to take a two-game lead at home when the play on Monday. Because of the tight race throughout the season, this isn’t much of an upset, but the Redvers Rockets took game one of their series with the third-place Wawota Flyers 4-3. Game two was in Redvers on Thursday but results were not available as of press time. Game three goes Wednesday in Wawota. The remaining series between the fourth-place Midale Mustangs and the

fifth-place Carlyle Cougars begins tonight in Midale. In the Saskatchewan Hockey Association provincial senior A south semifinals, Bienfait is slated to play Balcarres, beginning Feb. 18, while Arcola begins a series against Nokomis at home this Saturday, and Oxbow will play its B south quarter-final series against Moosomin this weekend. Game one is in Moosomin tonight, followed by game two in Oxbow on Saturday. Carlyle was scheduled

to wrap up its C division quarter-final series against Indian Head on Wednesday night, after taking game one 7-1. Results for game two were not available at press time. Redvers and Bethune kick off their C south quarter-final on Saturday, and will finish with game two in Redvers on Monday. Midale is moving on to play Shaunavon in the B south semifinal. Dates for those games have not yet been determined.

Bienfait Coalers defenceman Lucas Stubel clears the puck from the front of the net during Big Six regular season action. The Coalers look to continue their season’s success into the playoffs.

Getting the most from compost Q: I just have a patio garden for my city apartment, but this fall I was able to start saving kitchen compost, which I transfer weekly to a large plastic laundry tub on the patio. The large tub is the problem -- water is seeping up around the dirt, and of course the water has an odor. A friend of mine said the pH balance is off. How can I stop this from occurring? -- Jane in New Jersey A: What you need to do right away is turn the compost pile -- meaning, take a shovel, spade or

stick and stir the compost, remixing everything. The compost in the tub has compacted, so instead of actually composting (breaking down solids) it’s putrefying. Turning the compost will reintroduce air into the pile and help restart the process. If there’s a lot of extra water after turning, pour off some, but not all of it. There’s also the possibility that rain or snowmelt got into the tub. If you don’t want to punch drain holes in the bottom of the tub (most apartment managers frown on compost water stains on their patios) you should loosely cover the tub with a tarp so that air gets in but water does not. From here forward, monitor your compost

regularly and turn it every week. Also keep an eye on what you’re putting into the kitchen compost. Under no circumstances should you put in meat scraps; this will attract flies and result in maggots. Keep a roughly 50/50 ratio of carbon-rich to nitrogenrich ingredients. Carbon-rich ingredients include anything “brown,” such as sawdust, dead leaves, paper or straw; nitrogen-rich ingredients include anything “green” such as greens and vegetables. You can also add crumbled eggshells (calcium) and occasionally sprinkle wood ashes from the fireplace into the pile. When the danger of hard frost is past, add a handful of live earthworms to the freshly turned pile. They’ll

help aerate and break down the pile into rich compost. If you want to learn more about composting, primalseeds.org has published detailed instructions on building a keeping a healthy compost pile. HOME TIP: Keep compost piles in a far corner of the yard or as far from a home’s exterior walls as possible to prevent pests from entering your home. A date with truffles on Valentine’s Day

Recently, my hubby and I celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary. We commemorate our anniversaries and holidays, like Valentine’s Day, a little differently than we did when we were younger. I adore chocolate, but he knows that buying me a large, heart-shaped box of caramel or nut-filled confections is bad for my waistline. I don’t believe in sharing chocolate, and I’ll eat them until nothing is left but the frilly wrappers. My husband has diabetes, so the fabulous Lemon Chess Pie that I used to bake for him as a gift for special holidays is now reserved for when we have guests to share it with. I’ve learned how to create special treats for him that contain a lot less sugar, but still satisfy his sweet tooth. My recipe for It’s a Date Truffles is delicious, and because fresh California dates are the basis of the recipe, there are wonderful health benefits packed in my gift that will keep his heart healthy, too. A diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease, and dates are free of saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and cholesterol. California Dates are usually of the Deglet Noor and Medjool varieties and are certified by the American Heart Association. Diets high in fruits are believed to play an important health-benefit role due to the antioxidant properties of fruits such as dates. Dates are rich in polyphenols, a plant antioxidant that has a higher capacity of reducing oxidative stress. Polyphenols destroy free radicals that can cause disease. These

compounds are found only in plants. A low-fat diet rich in fiber-containing grain products, vegetables and fruits like dates may reduce the risk of some types of cancer. Dates are nutrient dense in dietary fiber, potassium and manganese. They have a natural balance of many minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron and selenium. All of these minerals work in harmony to help lower blood pressure on a daily basis. Dates have a wholesome, caramel-like savory taste and are packed with allnatural sugar. My recipe for It’s a Date Truffles! doesn’t require any baking. These easy-to-make treats start with dried dates for a natural sweetness and a chewy texture. Cocoa, reduced-fat peanut butter and ground whole-wheat graham crackers transform the sweet dates into a low-sugar dessert. This is the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for a diabetic or anyone who wants a healthy treat. IT’S A DATE TRUFFLES 1 cup dried pitted dates, 4-ounces, chopped 1 cup water

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup 2 tablespoons reducedfat or no-stir natural chunky peanut butter 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 8 full sheets whole wheat graham crackers, finely ground, about 1 1/4 cups 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats, not instant Cooking spray

until evenly combined. Stir in the graham crackers and oats. Remove from heat. 2. Lightly mist a baking sheet with cooking spray. Drop level tablespoons of the truffle mixture onto the prepared pan. Refrigerate until just chilled and set, about 20 minutes. 3. Put desired truffle coatings in small bowls.

Roll each truffle in desired topping and flatten slightly into a plump disk. Cover and refrigerate until firm. Serve chilled. Makes 24 truffles. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva and is the executive producer and host of “The Kitchen Diva!” cooking show on HULU.com. Her new cook-

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2012

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your ideas are finally reaching those who can appreciate them. But don’t expect any immediate reactions. That will come later. Meanwhile, a personal matter needs your attention. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your energy levels are rising, and you’re feeling restless and eager to get into some activity, whether it’s for profit or just for fun. In either case, the aspects are highly favorable, so go for it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relationship seems to be winding down from passionate to passive. It’s up to you to decide what the next step will be. But don’t wait too long to take the initiative. Delay could create more problems. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A decision looms. But be very sure that this is what you really want before you sign or say anything. Once you act, there’ll be little or no wiggle room for any adjustments. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Money matters improve, but you still need to be cautious with your spending. Also, set aside that Leonine pride for a bit and apologize for contributing to that misunderstanding. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A tempting financial situation could make the usually unflappable Virgo rush in before checking things out. Be alert to possible hidden problems. Get the facts before you act. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s nice to

know that you’re finally getting due credit for your efforts. You also should know that new opportunities will follow. A family member brings important news. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Any uncertainty that begins to cloud an impending decision could signal a need to re-examine your reasons for wanting to take on this commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You benefit from taking time out of your currently hectic schedule to do more contemplation or meditation. This will help re-energize you, both in body and soul. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Nursing hurt feelings can zap the energies of even the usually self-confident Sea Goat. Best advice: Move forward. Success is the best balm for a painful ego. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A display of temperament surprises you, as well as those around you. It could be all that pressure you’re under. Consider letting someone help you see it through. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Some things don’t seem to be working out as you’d hoped. Don’t fret. Instead, take some time out to reassess your plans and see where changes could be made. BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy traveling and meeting people. You are especially good with children and would make an excellent teacher.

ANSWER: Head lice cause mothers more consternation than just about any other illness. For the record, head lice don’t transmit any illnesses. They do cause itching and scratching. They’re not a reflection of your cleanliness. Most likely your child picked them up at school from head-to-head contact or from sharing caps, brushes or combs. The head louse is only 3 mm (0.12 inches) long. They’re difficult to see. The female louse lays her eggs at the base of the hair and glues them to the hair. The eggs are called nits. They hatch in about eight days. Nits found within a quarter of an inch from the scalp indicate active infection. If they are farther away, the infection is not likely to be active. Treatments for head lice are many and usually quite effective. Advisory bodies promote permethrin (Nix) as the treatment of choice. It calls for reapplication in one week to 10 days. Malathion lotion (Ovide) is another reliable cure. Benzyl alcohol (Ulesfia Lotion 5 percent) is another good treatment that is applied to dry hair

and then rinsed off. Natroba (spinosad) Topical Solution was approved recently as a head lice treatment. Both these latter two medicines need a prescription. You have many choices. Some of these treatments include combing the wet hair with a fine-toothed comb to get rid of nits. You do not have to treat other family members if they show no signs of infection. Pets are safe; human head lice don’t like them. The only household cleaning necessary is vacuuming chairs and carpets where your 5-year-old has been. Clothes he has worn in the past two days need to be washed in hot water and dried with maximum heat. Lice that are off the head live for only two days. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Some time ago, you wrote about a shrunken leg that was shaped like some kind of bottle. It has the word “teeth” in it. I have a dropped foot. My doctor doesn’t know what I am talking about but would like to see the article. Will you repeat it? -- I.D. ANSWER: The “teeth” in what I wrote referred to

Dr. Tooth, an English doctor whose name is part of a nerve illness called Charcot (SHAR-coe)-Marie-Tooth disease. In spite of the fact that the name draws a look of puzzlement from most people, it’s the most commonly inherited nervemuscle disorder. The illness usually shows itself in teen years, but it can take many years before it’s diagnosed. The lower leg muscles become quite thin, so the leg looks like an upside-down champagne bottle. It makes walking difficult. People stumble. Often, they cannot lift the foot fully off the ground -- a dropped foot. A number of different varieties of this illness exist. I’ve described the most common one. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2012

Macaroni and cheese on the light side Our pasta recipe is amazingly creamy, and it sneaks vegetables into the kids’ dinner without a lot of fuss. 1 package (16 ounces) cavatelli pasta 2 tablespoons margarine or butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground

black pepper Pinch ground nutmeg 3 1/2 cups low-fat (1 percent) milk 6 ounces (1 1/2 cups) reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 package (10 ounces) frozen mixed vegetables 1. Heat large saucepot

of salted water to boiling over high heat; add pasta and cook as label directs. 2. Meanwhile, in 3-quart saucepan, melt margarine over medium heat. With wire whisk, stir in flour, pepper, nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon salt; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in milk and, stirring constantly, cook over medium-high

heat until sauce boils and thickens slightly. Boil 1 minute, stirring. 3. Remove saucepan from heat; stir in cheeses just until melted. Following manufacturer’s directions, use immersion blender to blend mixture in saucepan until smooth. (Or, in blender at low speed, with center part of cover removed to allow steam to escape,

California simmered beans

We’ve all heard that we should eat more vegetables, but more often than not, those eating at our tables don’t want to. Well, put this on the menu and see if all those veggie haters don’t turn into veggie lovers with the very first bite! 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can
