Latest exhibit shows Trifecta of female artists Atrio of Manitoba artists have come together, bringing a history of their artistic creations to the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum as Trifecta opened in the main gallery room. Shirley Brown and Barb Flemington attended the opening reception at the gallery on Feb. 15. The third artist, Fay Jelly, was unable to attend due to a health issue, and her oil paintings are being presented through her website. Though they have known one another for a long time, this is the first time their work is showing together as part of one exhibit. The works appearing at the gallery cover several years of the artists’ work and demonstrates growth and development within the artists. Some of Brown’s painting is from the late 1980s and the exhibit is laid out in a chronological order that shows the many stages of each artist’s career. “It’s interesting to see the progression,â€? said Brown, as she looked at some her early paintings at one side of the gallery. “We’ve shown our work together before, when we were in a group called the Coterie of Malcontents, which was a collective in Manitoba that we rounded up,â€? said Flemington. “We put our work up in shows together then, but that group has since disbanded and gone in different directions, so this is actually the first time we’ve shown together (as just three of us).â€? Flemington said it’s interesting for her to see her pieces organized in a way that shows her different stages. “You just go along and go along and work, and keep recircling around some certain things that are of fascination or interest to you, whether they be imagery-based or idea-based. Only the undead can unite Canada One of the greatest moments in the history of Canadian political theatre happened the day before Valentine’s Day. The exchange between the inquisitive opposition and the proud governing party was all about bridging the gap between our political poles. Last week members of the Conservative Party and the New Democratic Party came together to find common ground in their shared love of zombies. “Canada will never become a safe haven for zombies. Ever!” declared Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. I’m surprised the opposition hasn’t turned that sound bite into an attack ad yet. Why do we all love zombies? Even the people running our country, when they’re supposed to be working, openly discuss the impending threat of a zombie apocalypse while cameras roll. The short answer is that zombies are great. They are in stories that force people to fight for survival and conquer a being more mindless than any animal. Zombies are a version of us without our humanity, a little like politicians. In the early days of the zombie, they were a metaphor for consumerism because that’s just what they do. They consume, mindlessly, in a pack of groaning, wandering beings, following their desire to consume
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers more right to the next meal. Apple has a legion of zombies, as does Microsoft. We might call them fan boys, but they’re really zombies. What are our governments doing to protect us from them? Baird’s quote may require some context. He didn’t just wake up after dozing off in the House and blurt out what may have been the greatest thing a Canadian politician has said since Trudeau told everyone, “Just watch me,” before invading Montreal. Baird said it in response to a question posed by fellow MP Pat Martin, NDP member for Winnipeg Centre, who had heard about the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta putting in place emergency measures to deal with the potential threat of zombies. “(Are you) working with your American counterparts to develop an international zombie strategy so that a zombie invasion does not turn into a zombie apocalypse?” he asked Baird, because zombies in America
wouldn’t have any moral dilemma trying to immigrate to Canada without bothering to get the proper identification. Most members of the House were at this point doubling over in giggles. Maybe it was just a distraction from the latest issue of The Walking Dead they were flipping through on their tablets instead of paying attention to the proceedings. Maybe they were laughing because they thought, “We are on the taxpayers’ clock and talking about zombie apocalypses. Best job ever!” I am sure a lot of people will not be happy about MPs wisecracking about the prospects of a zombie apocalypse while they could be using that time and their hot air to sling insults at one another across the room. Not me. I like this discussion. I honestly never thought of John Baird as a human before. I always thought he was a machine built by the Conservatives, designed to pump fear into us like a T-1000. While I may not agree with Baird on a lot of things, he would probably be a great guy to have a beer with and watch some zombie movies. It may have taken a brief discussion in the House of Commons about the zombie apocalypse, but I’ve finally found something I’ve been looking for in our politicians, a little bit of humanity.
Better rail service could be in farmers’ future When it comes to farming, at least in terms of Prairie grain and oilseed producers, the issues impacting profitability are many. Some issues, such as the way to market grain - the age old Canadian Wheat Board debate - have been part of the coffee shop culture of farming communities for decades. Ditto the weather. Few grain farmers do anything before looking out the window each morning to gauge the weather and what its impact might be on their crops. While well removed from their ability to impact it, farmers are also keenly aware that the value of the Canadian dollar in comparison to the currency of other countries impacts their bottom lines. All of the above things play a role in determining grain prices. But when it comes to affecting how Prairie farmers operate and how much they realize in returns, there is another major factor that often seems set on the back burner, and that is grain transportation. When the federal government eliminated the old transportation subsidy known as the Crow Rate, it seemed to take the issue out of the limelight. Yet Prairie farmers remain tethered to the railroads as the only viable way to get export grain to market. In Canada, outside of a few privately held
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist short-lines, that means relying on CP and CN rail companies. By the existence of two companies, there remains at least a mirage of competition, but few communities can boast of service by steel belonging to both. Most lines are singular ribbons of steel, with a community left to deal with whichever rail line still serves them. That means the grain handlers on the line and the farmers along it, too. The loss of the Crow, the rationalization of grain handling companies to a network of high throughput facilities, which often sit in isolation of close competition, and the closure of branch lines by the aforementioned rail companies have meant significant changes in grain transportation. The change has meant grain hauled ever farther from the farm gate to the elevator in ever larger trucks, and that has raised havoc with roads. That has meant grain once rolled on railroad steel is now hauled farther on grid roads and highways, with
local municipalities and provincial coffers covering the cost of upkeep. Still the railways are critical in getting grain to export ports, leaving farmers with no viable alternative since local alternative markets for most grains simply do not exist. So it is with more than some interest that farmers should be following Bill C-52. In what is an increasingly rare situation, MPs unanimously approved the government’s Fair Rail Freight Service Act. The act gives shippers the right to a level-of-service agreement with railways. Once fully enacted, the act could offer producers a new level of protection in terms of having some assurance of not only service but also the level of service. Bill C-52 requires carriers to entertain a request from a shipper to negotiate a levelof-service agreement, and more importantly would create penalties if either side does not live up to the commitments. Farmers have long thought the rail lines often fell short of doing their best for them in favour of serving other customers, and negotiated contracts could finally make the rail companies more directly accountable for services. Given the reliance farmers have on rail services, Bill C-52 could be one of the most significant steps toward better rail service in decades.

Don’t be the crazy ex With Valentine’s Day just recently passed, I’ve been thinking about the relationships I’ve experienced both first- and second-hand over the years. I’ve delved into my own personal relationships, and have reflected on the relationships of close friends and family members, I have to say, the trip down memory lane wasn’t pretty and has left me with one crucial question: What makes a person the crazy ex? I think that deep in our souls, we all have a little bit of crazy in us. No one likes rejection. No one loves being alone. No one likes having a broken heart. I’m totally guilty of toeing the line between “regular crazy” and “girl, you’ve got to be kidding me.” If you’re with me, but aren’t sure exactly where your craziness stacks up, have no fear because I’ve created a scale. A craziness scale, if you will. 1) The Ex-Girlfriend: The ex-girlfriend is typical in her first days as a newly single person. She cries a bit, binge eats and texts her friends to take her attention away from the burning hole in her heart. She also creeps her ex-boyfriend’s Facebook profile, over-analyzing all this tweets and desperately waits for news on who he
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me is speaking to. All-in-all, she’s super sad and moving on with her life, while planning how to look fantastic every time there’s even a remote chance she’ll see her ex. This girl is a 2/10 on the crazy scale because she’s a functioning human being capable of a variety of emotions. 2) The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: As you can see, there isn’t a huge leap from being simply an ex to being a crazy ex. I think this is the difference from removing all the photos of you together from Facebook and/ or deleting your ex immediately post-breakup. If this girl knows any of her ex’s passwords, she’ll be online checking out everything he’s been saying or doing. This is also the type of ex who might plan some sort of crazy revenge, like hooking up with his captain/ coach/brother/best friend. This girl is a 5/10 because while she’s functioning in society, she’s also a little bit evil and has loose mor-
als, which aren’t admirable human qualities. 3) The OK, Now You’re Really Crazy ExGirlfriend: With this type of ex, we’re talking about non-stop contact attempts, house drive-bys, calling and hanging up and just general obsessive behaviour. She’s not afraid to be all up in your face with her desire to remain in the life she was cut out of. She’s also happy to make threats to the new girls in her ex’s life, though most of the time she’s more talk (or nasty text) than action (girl fights). This girl is a solid 10/10 on the crazy scale. She needs a “friendtervention” to set her straight and show her she still has reason to live. Fortunately, she can live a normal life someday. 4) Seriously, Seek Help: This kind of girl may be beyond help, because even quality girl talk can’t bring someone back from this deep, dark pit of insanity. This girl appears to have moved on with her life, but
spends as much of her time as possible sabotaging the happiness of her ex. She’s not afraid or ashamed to hurt someone she doesn’t even know just because they loved/liked/met her ex. She sacrifices her own relationships and joy to dedicate time to nitpicking the women her ex meets, sending hateful texts and spreading rumours. Unfortunately for this type of ex, people know she’s crazy and will generally avoid her. This girl is off the crazy charts. As soon as you’re happy to hurt someone else with no benefit to yourself, you’re beyond help. I hope you like cats! I won’t lie, I’m guilty of falling into the first three categories. I’m also sad to admit that I’ve heard of girls who fall into the fourth. No one is perfect ladies and it’s OK to be a little crazy. But try to know where the line is and only cross it when it’s absolutely necessary – like hockey games or weekends at the Beef. Tonaya Marr likes to consider herself a role model. Rather than doing homework tonight, she wrote this column and baked a cake. Both are delicious. You can reach Tonaya at tonaya.marr@ gmail.com or send her a tweet @TonayaMarr.

What is Canada’s first-date dessert?
He She He She Said
It seems that first-date desserts are real things that real people fret over, so our friends to the south have decided to classify frozen yogurt as their universal first date selection. Many a date has been saved since introducing the Frogurt as the perfect way to cap off that first meal. Nevermore will Americans go wanting, because the perfect dessert formula has been discovered. Not so in Canada. We still have real people fretting over real dessert menus, fruitlessly searching for the Holy Grail of first-date desserts. These hopeless lovers need a hand, so why not try some kind of cheesecake? There is plenty of variety so you’ll never run out of fresh desserts on all those first dates you’ll be having. There is, of course, one big glaring problem suggesting a cheesecake to someone you’ve only really had about 75 minutes to get to know. At first glance it may seem risky suggesting a dessert that could potentially harm someone who requires a lactose-free snack. Luckily there are vegan cheesecakes, completely void of dairy, so hopefully one of these is on the menu. Many cheesecakes are incredibly rich, so it balances out nicely with a post-dinner coffee, assuming you drink your coffee without tainting it with cream or sugar. There is enough cream and sugar in the cheesecake. Also, according to the Food Network, cheesecake is a classic dessert served to athletes in the first Olympic Games. In the U.S., the first-date dessert is frozen yogurt, according to a study I read somewhere online a while ago. Having recently been introduced to Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt, I fully understand the charm. It’s delicious, comes in a variety of flavours and offers a buffet of suitable and unsuitable toppings. For example, last Monday when I was watching The Bachelor on TV (I’m in love), I was noshing on a yogurt combo of chocolate and salted caramel, topped with brownie chunks, toasted coconut, butterscotch and chocolate sauce. It was fantastic, and somehow made up for Sean’s decision to send home Leslie M. Here in Canada, while we do love our frozen treats, I think there’s one dessert-like national treasure that has captured the nation. This is especially true in Estevan, where this is actually one of the few avenues open for a casual first date: Tim Hortons. I know, coffee isn’t a dessert, but a doughnut, muffin or box of TimBits definitely qualifies. Consider: you’re picking up a girl from math class to go watch a hockey game together. You’ve texted non-stop for more than two weeks, so you know it’s definitely serious. Before the game, you grab a coffee/tea for each of you and sit together using the cups to keep your hands warm because you’re too scared to reach over and hold her hand. After the hockey game, it’s only 9 p.m. Mom and Dad said you didn’t have to be home until 11 p.m. Your friends are heading home, but that’s all right, because you two are going to find something to do. Tim Hortons for another beverage? Hollywood has told you that coffee shops are the perfect date setting; plus, you aren’t old enough to go to the bar. Coffee it is, and this time you both grab a doughnut, so there’s a reason to spend even more time out together. Man, I should write commercials for Tim Hortons, Canada’s first-date dessert centre. Also, 11 p.m. is an unreasonable curfew. – Tonaya Marr

Filmmaker searching for Capone stories in southeast One filmmaker is asking for the public’s help on her journey to find Al Capone in Saskatchewan. The notorious gangster of the 1920s enjoys a storied history of his contribution to the Chicago liquor scene in Prohibition-era America. What is less known are his ties to rural and southern Saskatchewan. Filmmaker and journalist Kelly-Anne Riess is looking to shed greater light on the connections Capone had to this part of Canada. His ties to Moose Jaw have generated an entire tourism industry in the small Saskatchewan city once known as Little Chicago. Last August, she and her team of researchers began work on a documentary, entitled Finding Al, and are now looking for people in the southeast who may have had relatives with ties to Capone and his bootlegging ring. Riess and her team seek to confirm Capone’s ties to Moose Jaw, and link him to other stories from Weyburn and Bienfait. “We’re looking for people in the Estevan area who might have stories that they’re willing to share with us, about whether or not their grandfather knew Capone. We’re looking to trace their family connections back down to Chicago, said Riess.
Weyburn resident Johnny Knox was interviewed for Finding Al and said Capone’s men used to hide out at his grandfather’s farm. “It’s a way for people to also look into their own ancestry and see if these stories are true and what sort of merits they have. The Saskatchewan native said she was fascinated to figure out if Capone was in fact ever in her home province. As she pointed out, there is some skepticism toward his visits. “A lot of people always ask when you go down to Chicago, ‘Oh, is Moose Jaw still trying to pull off that Capone connection?’ But the more I started to look into it as a filmmaker, I kind of started to get convinced that maybe Al Capone was in Saskatchewan, she said. She said there is plenty of evidence that might support Capone’s Prairie presence at the end of the 1920s. Prohibi-
tion in Saskatchewan ended in 1925, and that’s when it’s likely Capone turned to the Canadian Prairies for a steady supply of booze to smuggle into Illinois. “The Soo Line went directly from Chicago to Moose Jaw, and people like Al Capone were business people, so they would be looking for ways to bring in alcohol from Canada. He obviously had more than one connection, because if police arrested one of his distributors, he might want another link to Canada, said Riess. “Saskatchewan would have been his other connection to Canadian alcohol, so if something happened to his Ontario connection he could get it from Saskatchewan. Speaking with people in the southeast thus far has led
Home Sweet Home Yours All Yours.
to Riess meeting some people in Weyburn who say their grandfather knew Capone. “(They said) their grandfather knew Al Capone and was using cars and such to transfer alcohol across the border. One guy said his grandfather went down to Chicago every February to meet with Al Capone and that there might have been a picture of him. In addition to hiding alcohol under rail cars, Riess said it’s possible they were also transporting the goods by car. If alcohol were being moved via car, it’s possible Capone drove through Estevan and down Highway 39. A book called Rum Runners of Canada alludes to the Bronfman family, who owned the Seagram Company, and made many millions during Prohibition with their alcohol production. The book details a meeting between the Bronfmans and Capone in Bienfait at the White Hotel. “All these independent stories have come up all over Saskatchewan, so I think it’s possible that there are some connections because all these independent people that aren’t related lends
some credibility to maybe the fact that Capone was in Saskatchewan. Right now, Riess and her team are following paper trails and examining documents that support his presence. She said she has already interviewed one of Capone’s surviving family members, who said Capone did have a connection to the province and used to call the Prairies God’s country. She has spoken to a number of people from Moose Jaw about the project, including Jim Dixon, a city councillor during the 1970s, who spoke about the tunnels
under the city that at that time were simple rumours. Dixon was involved in investigating the tunnels. He found a hidden room under a manhole cover and the investigation uncovered further rooms under hotels. The tunnels have been linked to rum-running and are now one of the biggest tourist draws in Moose Jaw. For those who think they may have some information that could link Capone to the province, they are asked to visit the Finding Al Documentary Facebook group or going to www.findingaldocumentary.com

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2013
The protesters don’t seem to like any energy source When my grandfather came to Canada in 1930 at the age of 13, his family cleared 19 acres of land, by hand, in their first year. They didn’t have tractors, chain saws, or electricity. They had horses, saws, axes and plows. And for heat, they burned wood. If you listen to the protestors in Washington marching against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, that’s how we should all live from now on. The New York Times reported on Feb. 17, “On Sunday, thousands rallied near the Washington Monument to protest the pipeline and call for firmer steps to fight emissions of climatechanging gases. Groups opposing coal production, nuclear power and hydraulic fracturing for natural gas were
prominent; separate groups of Baptists and Catholics, as well as an interfaith coalition, and groups from Colorado, Toronto and Minneapolis joined the throng. According to the U. S. Energy Information Administration, these were the primary energy sources in that country in 2011: petroleum (36 per cent), natural gas (25 per cent), coal (20 per cent), renewables (nine per cent) and nuclear electric (eight per cent). Since the protesters don’t want petroleum pipelines (oilsands, fracking, global warming), natural gas (fracking again, global warming), nuclear (no global warming, but glowing in the dark), or coal (global warming), then they really have no other option than to return to
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile the lifestyle my late grandfather had in 1930 - agrarian, sustenance living, when most people grew their own food. And if you had a bad crop that year, you had a hard winter. Having grown up on a farm, I feel guilty when I realize how dismissive I can be when it comes to farming. I think that unfortunate tendency has come around because, frankly, there are very few farmers left. There doesn’t need to be that many anymore. I know one fam-
ily that farms 17,000 acres among them. Other farms in southeast Saskatchewan are easily 6,000 to 10,000 acres. It’s a tremendous change from the 160-acre homestead. The advances in energy production - especially petroleum fuelled equipment, combined with fertilizers that also have a petroleum base, plus all the modern technologies that have come along, mean that people can do things other than growing their own food and still
survive. You can’t make computers without petroleum, or run them without energy. You can’t pull 73-foot air hoe drills with horses. It’s precisely because of all these advances that those protesters have the time to march on Washington instead of having to head home to milk the cows and slop the pigs as my grandparents did. You can’t get rid of the 91 per cent of energy production and expect to continue living life as we now know it. You either have to magically replace all that energy, or you have to regress to a previous time. Europe did that about 1,500 or so years ago. They were called the Dark Ages. If we turn off the lights, they will be dark, indeed.
How many of those protesters walked to the National Mall in Washington? Were their buses fuelled by oil that came via Enbridge’s mainline? Did their planes burn jet fuel? No energy source is perfect - far from it. But we can’t live as a modern society without them. Over time we have moved from a coal-based energy system to petroleum. Natural gas may soon start to displace coal for power production and oil for transportation. Coal smoke no longer blankets London, England as it did 100 years ago. But coal will never be eliminated, nor will the oilsands. They are both resources simply too plentiful to ignore. When it comes to a growing population and an energy strategy to service it, the world will continue to work on an “all of the above basis. We need all the energy we can get, including oilsands oil pumped through the Keystone XL. The alternative is getting an axe and chopping firewood. I hope there’s enough to go around for seven billion people. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian.zinchuk@ sasktel.net

RCMP asking for help to name canine recruits National OTTAWA - Who knew census-takers could behave like rock stars? Broken furniture. Stained carpets. Markersmeared bed sheets and linens. Damaged wallpaper. It may sound like something out of an old Led Zeppelin biography, but newly released documents show one enumerator’s wild romp left Statistics Canada with a hefty bill for a trashed hotel room. The government first reported the payment last fall in its annual Public Accounts documents. But now there’s new photographic proof that census-takers know how to party. Eight of them rolled into Brantford, Ont., in July 2011 and checked into the Hampton Inn and Suites. They were enumerators from the East Coast, conscripted to help with census work on the Six Nations reserve. Two of the workers were related, according to a briefing note. Why that relationship is significant is not spelled out in the documents. Much of what happened over the next 11 days is unclear. Statistics Canada blacked out key details in documents released to The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act. What is clear is that the trail of destruction left behind was a pricey one. A broken luggage bench cost $800. It cost another $195 for a broken luggage rack, $695 for a broken chair and $495 for other damaged furniture.
Damage to the wallpaper cost $1,500 and the ruined duvet cover and linens were $1,150. *** TORONTO - Gun violence in Toronto is what prompted Ottawa to bring in stiffer mandatory minimum sentences and those penalties must not be overturned as “the plague of handguns continues, Ontario’s Appeal Court heard Tuesday. The province’s highest court is hearing six guncrime cases jointly this week as all of the appeals centre on controversial mandatory minimums. A provincial Crown attorney was the first to make arguments before the special five-judge panel in a courtroom packed with two dozen lawyers. Arguments will likely focus on the three-year mandatory minimum sentence for possession of a loaded illegal gun. The law was enacted in 2008 as part of the federal Conservatives’ omnibus crime bill, but was first proposed in response to a spate of gun violence in Toronto in 2005. *** INNISFAIL, Alta. The RCMP are looking for help to name some recruits who haven’t even been born yet. Young Canadians 16 and under are invited to submit suggestions for 10 German shepherd puppies expected soon at the RCMP’s police dog training school at Innisfail, Alta. The names must serve for either a male or female pup, can have no more than nine letters and must be one
or two syllables. They must also start with the letter F. Contestants must print their name, age, address, telephone number and the suggested name on a postcard and mail it to the training centre by March 22. The Mounties are reminding participants that the names must be fitting for a dog in police service. “When thinking of names, it is important to keep in mind that these are working police dogs, not pets, says an RCMP release. About 85 per cent of the dogs working for the RCMP were born and trained at the Innisfail centre.
some also holding precious metals. Police said they found a burnt-out minivan believed to be involved in the robbery near the airport later Monday night. The heist was estimated at some $50 million in diamonds, said Caroline De Wolf of the Antwerp World Diamond Center. “What we are talking about is obviously a gigantic sum, De Wolf said. The robbers forced
their way through a perimeter fence, at a place where two work sites obstructed a clear view, Bijnens said. There were no details about how the hole was opened but airport authorities said it must have taken more than simply blasting through it with a vehicle. *** AMESBURY, Mass. A collection of John F. The gang responsible for one of the biggest diamond heists in recent years used two black vehicles with a flashing blue police lights in their daring raid late Monday, said Anja Bijnens, spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office. “They tried to pass themselves off as police officers, Bijnens said Tuesday. The robbers, who wore outfits resembling dark police clothing, got away with 120 parcels, mostly containing diamonds but
the former president’s Air Force One leather bomber jacket. The collection of about 2,000 photographs, gifts and other items was auctioned Sunday in Massachusetts. The items belonged to David Powers, Kennedy’s assistant and close personal friend who died in 1998. The jacket went to an anonymous bidder and had been only expected to fetch from $20,000 to $40,000.

Metro Toronto could handle another NHL club Comedians who love to needle the Toronto Maple Leafs about their ineptness since last winning the Stanley Cup in 1967 are rubbing their hands together with the anticipation that the National Hockey League might soon expand, with a metro Toronto arena in Markham, Ont., as a potential home base for a new NHL club. “Finally,” the comedians will say in some fashion: “Toronto is finally getting an NHL team.” Markham city council recently wrestled with the question of erecting a multimillion-dollar facility that could house an NHL team, but league officials have apparently told the mayor and council not to get their hopes up too high. Still, it makes sense, doesn’t it? Greater New York has three NHL teams (Rangers, Islanders, New Jersey Devils) and the Greater Toronto area, with its 10 million-plus population, could certainly accommodate two teams. Regular rumours say the Leafs have
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist control over their market, however, and will not allow a second team into the region. Considering it’s easier to get into Fort Knox or out of a federal prison than it is for a non-season-ticketholder to get into a Leafs’ game, a second team in the suburbs of Toronto couldn’t help but be a huge marketing success. Quebec City, however, has the unspoken first dibs on an expansion (or relocated) NHL club. Since Quebec and Winnipeg lost their teams in the 1990s, and Winnipeg has since returned to the league, Quebec is automatically (logically and politically) next on the list. Expansions only happen in multiples of two, however, which means that if a sad-sack NHL team in the south (Florida, Carolina, Phoenix) doesn’t relocate to Quebec, expansion is the answer. And that possibly
brings a second Ontario team into the equation. Expansion talks have heated up since the resolution to the recent NHL lockout. Owners missed half a season of revenue and a quick and easy way to recoup a few hundred million dollars is to add a couple of expansion teams and spread the lucrative fees among the existing owners. While the calibre of hockey might suffer, the owners’ bank accounts certainly won’t. • Comedy writer Jim Barach on this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona race featuring a Mazda that ran on biofuel made from chicken guts, pork lard and beef tallow: “Or as NASCAR fans call that, Sunday dinner.” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “Kobe Bryant, talking about Dwight Howard, says he should play with pain. As opposed to Bryant’s longtime Laker teammates who have played with a pain.” • Ravens centre Matt Birk, to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, on why he’ll
someday donate his grey matter to science: “Terrible pun, but it’s a no-brainer.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco went to Disney World and rode in the Main Street Electrical Parade. Coming from the Superdome, he was just glad to be somewhere that had electricity.” • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “Pro-celeb golf pairing that would have been fun to watch: Vijay Singh, who copped to using a banned performance-booster made from deer-antler velvet, and comedian Gary Mule Deer.” • Barach again: “Regis Philbin is reportedly in talks to do a show on Fox Sports. Apparently they are trying to get a lock on the demographic that still worships Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Ashley Judd is now the former spouse of Indy Car driver Dario Franchitti. Or as they say in racing, wife in the past lane.” • Headline at Fark.com:
Can Your Make-Up Do This?? Look Flawless with our new Jane Iredale Skin Care line of cosmetics. It hides all imperfections including dark circles under your eyes, bruises – even TATTOO’s!!

W NE
“IOC president to meet with head of wrestling’s governing body to discuss how big of a bribe is needed to save its Olympic status.” • CBS’s David Letterman, on Westminster Kennel Club perks: “The winner of the dog show gets a beautiful blue ribbon and a toilet full
of champagne.” • Comedy writer Alan Ray, on what the game and the concession stands have in common on NBAAll-Star weekend: “Overpriced hot dogs.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

Serwa, Thompson finish first, second in skicross National TO R O N TO - D i ana Matheson still hasn’t brought herself to watch the replay of Canada’s heartbreaking loss to the United States in the London Olympic semifinals. The blow was that painful. Canada’s women’s soccer team hopes for some measure of revenge when it renews its rivalry with the U.S. later this year in Toronto in a friendly that Matheson and coach John Herdman say will be anything but. “For a lot of these players, there’s unfinished business there, Herdman said Tuesday. “This game is a bit personal. I’m not frightened to say that. The Americans will visit BMO Field on June 2 as the two teams will meet for the first time since their controversial Olympic semifinal. Canadian star Christine Sinclair recorded a hat trick in the 4-3 extra-time loss in August. After the game she lashed out at the officiating and was later slapped with a four-game suspension by
FIFA. Canada went on to beat France for the bronze, capturing the country’s first Olympic medal in a traditional team sport since 1936. *** SOCHI, Russia Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna, B.C., led a 1-2 Canadian finish at a women’s World Cup skicross event Tuesday. Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., was second while Montreal’s Chris Del Bosco captured silver on the men’s side. Serwa overtook overall women’s leader Fanny Smith early in the race to win her second title of the season on the same course that will be used during next year’s Sochi Olympics. Victor Oehling Norbert of Sweden won the men’s gold, edging Del Bosco in his first race of the season following an injury. Germany’s Andreas Schauer was third. Alex Fiva leads the standings with 474 points after eight of 12 races this season. Fellow Swiss skier Armin Niederer is second with 429 points, while Tomas Kraus of the Czech
Republic has 322 for third. Smith tops the women’s discipline with 476 points. Ophelie David of France is second with 416 points and Serwa is third with 401. The event was the last of the test events for freestyle skiing and snowboarding at the Roza Khutor Extreme Park. *** An injury has forced Montreal welterweight Rory (Ares) MacDonald out of his UFC 158 co-main event with Carlos (Natural Born Killer) Condit next month. Instead Condit will face Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks on the March 16 card at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Hendricks had been slated to meet Jake (The Juggernaut) Ellenberger on the same show. Ellenberger (28-6) will now face former Strikeforce champion Nate (The Great) Marquardt. “Unfortunately late last week during a training session, Rory suffered a severe neck and back strain, MacDonald’s manager Lex McMahon said in a statement Monday night. “Rory is in a great deal of pain and

ZURICH - FIFA committed Tuesday to using goal-line technology at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and could have four systems competing for selection. FIFA said it is now seeking tenders from companies which want their system to be used at the Confederations Cup in June and next year’s World Cup. “Interested GLT companies will be invited to join an inspection visit to the Confederations Cup venues, currently scheduled for mid-March, with a final decision due to be confirmed in early April, FIFA said in a statement. FIFA President Sepp Blatter insisted on giving World Cup referees hightech aids to make goalline decisions after seeing England midfielder Frank Lampard have a clear goal denied against Germany at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Tuesday’s decision was expected once FIFA’s rulemaking panel, known as IFAB, decided last July to approve goal-line technology at competitive matches after two systems passed extensive tests. The camera-based Hawk-Eye system and GoalRef, which uses magnetic sensors, were used at the Club World Cup in Japan in December. *** TAMPA, Fla. - Derek Jeter received an ovation that could be heard throughout Steinbrenner Field when he jogged onto the diamond for the New York Yankees’ first full-squad workout Monday. Jeter took part in most of the team drills, including on-field batting practice for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery last October. The 38-year-old captain, who has been hitting in an indoor cage, also took part in a 25-minute defensive session at shortstop. “It felt good, Jeter said. “It’s the first time I’m doing everything on the field, in terms of hitting on the field, groundballs on the dirt. What I’m doing now is what I would be doing at the beginning of workouts anyway, but I’m a couple weeks behind. Although he didn’t take part in agility or running, Jeter got the day’s biggest salute from the several hundred fans present when he first appeared. They also cheered when he lined a ball to right on his first BP swing.
