A taste of Burns with a side of haggis A fun information evening was held at the Estevan Public Library on Tuesday with one question on everybody’s mind: Who was Robert Burns anyway? With a meeting room decorated in Scottish flags and books of Burns’ poetry, a small group huddled in to learn a bit more about the 18th century bard. Burns Night is coming to Estevan for another year next Saturday, and library program co-ordinator Jill Kergan wanted people who may be going to the event to learn a little bit more about why we celebrate this particular figure. After a couple of background videos from the BBC were shown, Ron Samoluk took centre stage to share what he knew of the poet. A former teacher who taught a little Burns to his classes each year, Samoluk appeared in a plaid shirt and widebrimmed hat, adding a little Scottish inflection to his speech when reading from Burns. “What a fantastic, interesting character,” Samoluk said of the poet. The Scot is so widely adored for his written works because of their accessibility to every man. He is known as the Ploughman’s Poet, Samoluk noted. Burns was a farmer himself. “He was popular because he sat in the bars,” he said, so to put it in modern terms, his poems speak to

He told the attendees that Burns was a farmer, who spent his off hours in bars imbibing scotch and chasing women. “He was writing poetry, trying to impress the girls and drinking whisky,” said Samoluk. “He loved poetry, he loved whisky and he loved women but not necessarily in that order.” The inspiration for

much of his writing was women he was pursuing, whom he regularly named in the pieces. His poems include the names of many women he had spent time with, including the woman he married, Jean Armour. Samoluk noted that Burns did however, have four children with other women, along with nine he had with his wife. One of Burns’ most famous works, Auld Lang Syne, wasn’t something he liked to take credit for, said Samoluk, who noted it was based on a traditional Scottish song. Those verses are sung to mark the closing of the previous calendar year by many New Year’s revellers. Other works of Burns that were noted were A Man’s a Man for A’ That and To a Mouse. The former is a poem about the equality of men, whether they are royalty or farmers. The latter was written after the poet disturbed a mouse nest in his field with a plow. The poem tells of how humans and mice share the same realities of being upended by fate. After the presentations, the group enjoyed some of the fine fixings of a traditional Burns’ supper with haggis, oat cakes and black buns. For those who wish to hear more about Burns, the Estevan Robbie Burns’ Night will be held Jan. 28 at the Legion Memorial Hall with poetry readings, bagpiping and haggis.

March against bullying comes to Estevan Initiatives these days are all colour-coded, and the colour of anti-bullying is pink. The Red Cross’ Pink Shirt Day this April will be the first in the Energy City, and the day will be marked with a march around downtown beginning and ending at the courthouse. George Barker, the community outreach coordinator in Weyburn, said the occasion is out in the community and not just the schools because the problem with bullying isn’t one that occurs only in the schools and shouldn’t be expected to be dealt with only in the schools. “The community needs to understand bullying is not a school issue; it’s a community issue, and they have a role,” said Barker. Centring the march around the courthouse is meant to give some more weighty significance, noted Barker, as he calls it a “fitting representative” by

which to remind people of the laws of the land and why they were created. “We made laws in this land to protect us, and we want to make sure we stay safe.” Barker has already co-ordinated with the Holy Family Roman Catholic School Division who will participate in the march, and he’d like to see the other schools involved as well. He noted that individual schools can participate in Pink Shirt Day with activities within their schools. Weyburn held its first march last year with great success. All of the elementary schools were involved as well as some students from the Comprehensive School, and in total, Barker estimated there between 800 and 1,000 people who turned out for the march. Schools, businesses and anybody else in the community can get involved. Orders for pink Tshirts must be made by Feb.

1, and all proceeds from the sales will go to the Red Cross’ bullying prevention programs, particularly the RespectED program. Barker said they don’t just like to talk about antibullying, which is the word that is often used to describe the efforts of events such as Pink Shirt Day, but he said they prefer the term respect. “We like to talk about respect for each other. It’s all right to be different. If we can make the province green for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, we can make the province pink to say ‘no’ to being disrespected.” Barker said bullying is around, whether people see it or not, and now it may be more difficult to pinpoint. He added that cyberbullying is becoming more prevalent. With more of the bullying happening online or via text message, there is a separation between the bully and the victim. He called this kind of bullying “twisted” but noted that awareness of cyberbullying

is growing. Awareness can mean many things. Informing members of the community that bullying may be happening around them is one message to glean from this campaign. For youth however, Barker said something he wants them to be aware of is how to deal with bullying. “We’re trying to empower them to help them ... solve their own problems and give them support to stand behind them if they need help.” Barker said a youth who is bullied should feel comfortable speaking to a teacher, pastor, peace officer or parent. He noted that there is always the Kids’ Help Phone Line. The march in Estevan will be held on April 4, beginning at the courthouse. The Weyburn march will be April 3. Those who want to order a T-shirt to support Pink Shirt Day can e-mail george.barker@ redcross.ca

Choices for blocked leg artery DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 74-year-old male and have been diagnosed with peripheral artery disease, PAD. I have a complete occlusion of the main artery just above the knee. What, in your opinion, are the chances of getting through the blockage with angioplasty? There is constant soreness in my calf, even at rest. Is that caused by the blockage? Will cilostazol (Pletal) and Crestor possibly dissolve some of the blockage? -- J.C. ANSWER: Peripheral artery disease, PAD, is also called peripheral vascular disease. It’s an obstruction to the flow of blood through a leg artery. The obstruction is a buildup of cholesterol, fats and various other blood elements. Between the ages of 60 and 65, 4 percent of adults have it, and by the time people reach 80, 20 percent or more are victims of it. Its chief sign is intermittent claudication, which is pain in leg muscles, quite often the calf muscles, when a person is active. Many can predict almost to a specified number of steps when the

pain will arise. Once the person rests, pain usually lasts minutes, but it can take 20 or more minutes to leave. It returns when the person begins to walk again. I can’t say definitely if your constant calf pain is due to PAD; it might be. Ankle blood pressure is a valuable test for detecting PAD. Normally, the ankle pressure should be close to the arm blood pressure. A lower ankle pressure indicates an obstruction in a leg artery. Your medicines cilostazol and Crestor won’t completely dissolve the buildup in your leg artery, but they’ll keep it from growing larger. Crestor might reduce the size somewhat. You can help matters by watching your cholesterol; eating a diet that emphasizes grains, fruits and vegetables; controlling your blood pressure; and controlling

your blood sugar if you have diabetes. Walking is an exercise that is most helpful. Angioplasty is one option for you. It will get through the buildup. It’s the same procedure used to open heart arteries with a balloon-equipped catheter that is threaded to the blockage through a surface artery. The balloon is opened at the obstruction, and often a stent is left in the artery. A stent is a wire device that keeps the artery opened. Surgical replacement of the clogged segment of artery with a graft is another option. The location and extent of disease determine which is the better choice. The booklet on PAD explains this common condition in detail. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 109W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Canadian rules are for Canadians only When I talk about the government, I usually complain. I do try to give credit where it’s due, when it’s due, but it’s always hard because for all the good the federal government does, there is so much unjustifiable hogwash, whether it be legislation or the appointment of new senators. Before I denounce the feds for their latest misstep, I will congratulate them on some things they did well in an effort to be less biased and divisive. The Conservatives didn’t bend over and cough up the requested $8.8 million for a grandiose celebration of the Commonwealth Queen’s 60th year of royal power, in a solid attempt to turn her diamond jubilee into a more economically appropriate bronze jubilee. They cut it down to a $7.5 million expense, and one that we’ll all consider to be very worthwhile when the next federal budget comes out with cuts everywhere else. I’ll never understand why we spend money on 100-year-old figureheads. They are also getting rid of the ban on early transmission of election results. It’s a good move, but if they legalize anything else, then the new jails they want are going to be pretty empty. Now for the ridiculous political garbage from the last week.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Not legally allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed in Canada because their native countries have those unions outlawed is absolute nonsense. Since when does Canada care what other countries laws are concerning a social non-issue like gay marriage? It’s like the federal government is saying that if the country you originated from practised Shariah law, you can live by that when you come to Canada; or if you’re a 20-year-old American in Canada looking for a drink and the bars can refuse to serve you because you aren’t of age in your own country. We are saying that if you don’t like the restrictive or oppressive laws of your country and wish to live in a freer one like ours, good luck because when you get here, you will be treated by the laws of the place from whence you came. The best way for Canada to remain relevant on the world stage is by showing that we are a great country that wants to bring in people from all over the world to

live in a place free of the injustices that other countries have. Just because some countries have backwards laws, doesn’t mean we should uphold them. At least the justice minister was quick to admit this loophole in the system was offensive. After a day of unclear statements, what he seems to have said more plainly last Friday was that this was simply a grave legislative oversight, like an embarrassing typo, that would be remedied immediately so these lovebirds can finally get a divorce. Another good move by the government isn’t even just a good move by the feds, but by The Great Stephen Harper himself. After a report that indicated Harper would face-off against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin for 40thanniversary celebrations of the 1972 Summit Series, the PMO denounced the report as mere hearsay. Nobody wants to see Harper and Putin play hockey, so kudos to Harper for not scribbling that into his to-do list. After the Queen’s jubilee and the hockey series, how many more celebrations does Canada have scheduled this year? We probably won’t bother with Canada’s 145th anniversary because we’re all pooling our money to buy her something unforgettable for the big 1-5-0.

Farmers could see impact of poor global economy Sometimes there is a feeling we live in a vacuum in this world, and being on the Canadian Prairies, and in particular Saskatchewan, right now is one of those times. Certainly driving around the local community you see signs all over looking for staff. They may not be jobs that pay the wages to match rising home costs, but at least there are jobs to be had, and lots of them. Look across the economy and things are generally strong. Oil, gas, mining and agriculture are all steady, with several of the areas coming off some record, and near record prices. When you have an economy cooking, and jobs plentiful, it should be a time of great optimism. Certainly locally that optimism is being manifested in an expected busy construction season in Yorkton. There are at present two car dealerships, three strip malls, two hotels, and a number of other businesses with announced construction planned for 2012. But every time you pick up a newspaper covering stories outside of Canada, you see clouds of uncertainty hanging over

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist world economies. For farmers that is particularly troublesome since world economies dictate prices for grains and oilseeds. We only need to look south to the United States to see an economy in turmoil at best. In fairness, if they did not have their tentacles so entwined around the world, they would be in collapse. The debt on the federal, state and local municipal levels would have bankrupted a country with less political influence. That is bad news for Canada, since they are this country’s major trading partner. It is doubly worrisome since the Americans tend to become increasingly protectionist in times of economic distress, meaning imported goods are often

the focus of unwarranted consumer and political backlash. Turn to Europe and the situation late last year in Greece is all one needs to think about to become somewhat concerned about the economic underpinnings of that region. There is a very real concern that Greece is only the visible example of troubles that ripple through the region. The one region that seemed to be holding things steady was the Far East, where China, Korea, India and Japan were bustling. Japan has been hit by natural disaster, and India is in a spiral too. The rupee fell some 20 per cent against the U.S. dollar in the last half of 2011, and the U.S. dollar isn’t exactly bullet proof right now either. When the rupee gets hit, the ability to buy import goods declines. For Prairie farmers, that could mean less interest in our pulse crops, which has to be on their minds as they plan 2012 cropping intentions. So while things look good close to home, it may be a case of being at the calm centre of a growing economic storm around the world.

Wearing clothing is harder than you think I like clothes. I like wearing clothes. I like how clothing comes in so many different styles, colours and materials. It’s really nice to have such a variety. My only complaint when it comes to getting dressed is having to wear formal clothing. Because what exactly is formal clothing? Is formal clothing a knee-length skirt and blouse? Is it a mini-dress with heels? Or perhaps dress pants with a sweater? Some clubs and bars require women to wear formal attire. This can pose quite a problem. Let’s say it’s -47 with the wind chill, like it was earlier this week. So it’s freezing cold and exposed skin is in danger of turning blue, but you’re

heading to a formal club. Heels can slip on the ice, bare legs and arms can freeze, and lots of women won’t wear coats if they aren’t sure there’s a coat check. Would leggings and flats be OK? Or perhaps a maxi-dress would be appropriate? You don’t want to get funny looks or worse, asked to leave, because you don’t match up with the dress code. There’s also the issue in the workplace. Many office jobs require employees to dress “office casual.” Which may/may not include jeans, or maybe just jeans on Fridays. But it probably doesn’t include hoodies, but hey, some jobs might be cool with that, and weather could

be uncomfortable or super unflattering. Also, what might be considered work appropriate at one workplace can definitely be the wrong choice at another. Plus, changing seasons and temperatures require different styles. Are shorts OK at this workplace when it’s 30 degrees outside? Can I wear flip-flops with this dress? And then there’s air conditioning. I’ve definitely spent all day freezing to death in my office, wearing my Gryffindor snuggie and slippers, and then have ventured outdoors only to sweat. It’s often the fit that

causes the most problems, in my opinion. So many articles of women’s clothing are designed to be revealing, suggesting that showing skin is the style for women. Even T-shirts, which are a staple in men’s wardrobes, can be skintight and low-cut for girls. I can imagine that female teachers are in a tough situation. They go to school every day and are bombarded with young people in young-people styles. And teachers try to dress in a way that earns respect, and even admiration from their students. But wearing the same styles and brands as their students, or even people who have graduated, can be risky. It can cross that line between professional and “I-can-see-way-too-muchof-your-cleavage.” Female students have a tough time respecting teachers who they feel dress inappropriately, while male students are often quick to make

What do you think of abbreviations?

He He SheShe Said Said

Abbreviations may have gone too far. Abbreviations themselves aren’t to blame, but the people who abuse them are. Once again we will exercise our role as the word police to see if stopping short with the English language is in fact a serious crime. There is one thing that is certain: our proofreader is going to go totes banans reading some of this writing. I don’t really know what

that means any more than you do. I recently exchanged a couple of e-mails with someone I spoke to for a story, and after giving a thank you in an e-mail I received this reply: “You’re welks.” I have heard a lot of words or colloquial terms abbreviated but that was the first time I saw a “welks.” Like most peeps nowadays, I send lots of texts, an abbreviation of text message that I respect. I’ve never gotten into using the lingo associated with texting, and I fastidiously punch out each word to its full extent. I’ve never, ever typed LOL, though I don’t spell out “laughing out loud” either. Writing is getting so incredibly condensed that it’s starting to take longer to decipher the message than it would have taken the messenger to write it out in full. I wish I was part of that world that doesn’t give a hoot about grammar. Language evolves over time and this is just the next step in the evolution of English, or at least western English, because from what I know of the Brits, they take the written and spoken word much more seriously than we do. I’d like to be one of the early adopters of this new language based on 140 character sound bites. It’s very anti-Dickens. I don’t like being the old fogy who’s stuck in his ways but prefer to embrace change. Welks may very well one day be an official word, and welcome may well go the way of the dodo bird. We’ve been simplifying English for hundreds of years. Sitting at the Festival Theatre, listening to recitations of Shakespeare, you can’t help but think the language sounds more intelligent than today’s. The battle to save the language is a losing one so it’s time to just go widda flo.

I’m really on the fence when it comes to abbreviations. As I stated in a previous column, I hate it when people use single letters or stupidly short abbreviations during conversations over text. I don’t want 2 read ur stupid message if ur disrespecting grammar all over the place. You’re not saving yourself a lot of time by chopping out crucial letters, and numbers do not belong anywhere near letters. That’s yet

another reason why I h8 math. That said, I am guilty of using other, longer abbreviations myself in text messages. I def abbreviate “definitely” and I’ll prob type a shorter form of “probably.” I manage to justify this to myself because I only shorten words that are kind of long, and so actually would take me longer to type. But maybe my dislike for “u” and “b” subbing for stand-alone words is a bit hypocritical. The worst abbreviating, though, does not exist in the text universe. Words shortened in spoken word, in daily conversations, are horribly annoying. Totes, cray, fav, pic. I cannot believe that these have become socially accepted among some people! Not to say that I’m not guilty of my own missteps with abbreviations and the English language, but I at least abbreviate with the knowledge that I end up sounding like a brainless moron. For example (and it may be better to read this bit aloud for the best effect): “I am totes packing myself my redic winter boots, just in case I get stuck outside. This weather is looking cray and I don’t want to crash my fav car and end up a crim! LOL!” Or: “I am totally packing my ridiculous winter boots, just in case I get stuck outside. This weather is looking crazy and I don’t want to crash my favourite car and end up a criminal.” I think it’s pretty obvi which example makes you sound more like an airhead. Just for fun, I read the first example out loud and ended each word like a question. That really added to the effect. Moral of the story: if you’re an English speaking person, BE an English speaking person. You’re an insult to our education system when you talk like that. Kk?

For Hazel, a friendly acquaintance Today I’m having a tough day. I just had a phone call telling me that a woman who goes to our church is in the last days of her life. She is fighting cancer and has been a valiant soldier. My heart breaks as I think about her journey and the thought of not seeing her in her regular seat at church. Her name is Hazel and although we are not close, Hazel has impacted my life greatly. At best, we are acquaintances and members of the same church who greet each other each week with a smile and a brief conversation. My husband is one of the main singers at our church, and Hazel has made a point of telling me how much she enjoys it when he sings. We’ve talked about my children and life in general, and she is always masterful at bringing joy into the conversation and seeing the bright side of every situation.

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life When I first met Hazel, I didn’t know she was in the fight of her life. I thought she was one of most attractive older women I had ever met. Her smile told a story that I craved to hear; her eyes drew me in like a good book on a warm summer’s day; her voice was soothing and every word seemed to be seasoned with wisdom. Hazel was one of the reasons I looked forward to Sunday mornings, seeing her in her regular seat and engaging with a smile made the world feel okay. She may never know the impact she has had on my life. She may never know how I longed for our brief interactions, our smiles across the aisle and how I enjoyed watching her soak up the music and the

words as my husband sang. Yet most important for me, was how she gave me this gentle nod that spoke of acceptance, which told this mother of three that it’s all going to be okay and you’re doing a good job. All in a glance, a sweet smile and a gentle nod. Hazel was a true communicator and someone who I will remember for a lifetime. I wish she could know the things she taught me on these Sunday mornings. Through her life I have seen strength, perseverance, courage, determination, kindness, gentleness, sweetness and love. So today, I simply pray, I believe and I thank God for a life well lived and in these prayers I ask God to teach me to be a woman like Hazel. Susan J. Sticky Toffee Pudding The term pudding in England refers to many kinds of desserts. This pudding -- all the rage in Great Britain and Australia -- is a moist cake with a sticky broiled-on brown-sugar topping. 1 cup dates, chopped and pitted 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup sugar 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) margarine, softened, substitute butter 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup heavy cream, substitute whipping cream

Whipped cream 1. Grease 13- by 9-inch broiler-safe baking pan. In medium bowl, combine dates, baking soda and 1 1/2 cups boiling water; let stand 15 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat sugar and 6 tablespoons margarine or butter until creamy. Add egg and vanilla; beat until blended. At low speed, beat in flour and baking powder. Add date mixture and beat until combined (batter will be very thin). Pour batter into baking pan. Bake 30 minutes or until golden and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. 3. Meanwhile, in 2-quart saucepan, heat brown sugar, heavy cream and remaining 4 tablespoons margarine or butter to boiling over medium

heat; boil 1 minute. Set aside. 4. Turn oven control to broil. Spread brown-sugar mixture evenly over top of hot dessert. Place pan in broiler at closest position to source of heat; broil until bubbly, about 30 seconds. Cool in pan on wire rack 15 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream if you like. Sinking reveals idiocy, brilliance and cowardice It has been with great fascination that I’ve been following developments off the coast of Italy this past week, where one of the largest passenger vessels in the world struck a reef, tearing a giant hole in its side. In short order, the Costa Concordia was on the bottom of the ocean. Fortunately, the bottom wasn’t too far away. It’s been really hard for the world not to make comparisons to the most famous shipwreck of all, the Titanic, which sank 100 years ago this April. Indeed, the similarities are striking. The ship struck a large object. It soon sank. Thousands aboard were in chaos during a disorderly evacuation. But there are also nu-

merous differences, too. Concordia was not hit by a nearly invisible iceberg, moving on its own accord. The ship, which was likely equipped with the most modern of navigation hardware in the world, struck a rock in waters that have been charted since Roman times. The ineptitude of the captain, on the bridge at the time, seems all but certain in this case. But what very few have noted, other than his lawyer, is that at least some of his actions have saved nearly all on the 4,200 people on that ship. For a ship that is a third of a kilometre long, he brought it from cruising speed to a stop and turned it around in the space of just a few boat lengths. And while the world may be shocked

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile to see this ship on its side, the fact is they can indeed see the ship, because he essentially beached it, bringing it as close to shore as possible. As a photographer, I recognize that lens choice can make an object seem close or far, so depending on the angle and whether the photo was taken with a telephoto or wide angle lens, the various pictures make the wreck of the Concordia seem very close or very far from the harbour

of Giglio Porto. However, aerial photos reveal this 290 metre-long ship was within two boat lengths of making it inside the harbour itself, where its massive bulk would have utterly choked the harbour. With a draft of 8.2 metres (27 feet) before taking on water, it’s unlikely this ship could have gotten any closer. When it flopped over, its funnel nearly touched the island. Its final disposition was probably the best place it could be in the worst of

situations. This, in turn, allowed people who could not get into lifeboats to swim for shore, and survive. It was literally the distance of a few laps of a large pool. If this ship had remained in open water, it surely would have completely capsized quickly and disappeared under the waves. The death toll may have been in the thousands, instead of six, and possibly a few dozen more, depending on resolution of the missing people’s fate. Given the slow pace of the evacuation, they could have lost nearly everybody. There is no excuse for driving the ship onto the rocks, one of which decided to stay embedded in the ship. There is also no excuse for the lack of a lifeboat drill before the

ship left dock. Nor is there an excuse for the lack of leadership of the crew when it came time to warn the passengers of the imminent danger, the need to abandon ship, the lack of a mayday call, and horrible discipline in conducting the evacuation. That the captain was found on shore well before the evacuation was complete speaks volumes of his lack of leadership. Not only was he foolhardy to drive his $570 million ship onto the rocks, but he was a coward, too. That fool and coward may have killed dozens, but ironically, saved thousands. Fun games to keep minds sharp in 2012 I resolve to build a better brain in 2012. If you’re like me, the “think tank” can always use a little exercise, and it’s easier and definitely more fun to keep a resolution when you share the challenge with friends and family. That’s where games come in. Here are a couple of fun brain games to put smiles on faces and help everyone in the family keep their mind sharp. TAKE TWO!

When you don’t have time for a standard Scrabble board game, try this speedy version that uses the letter tiles without the board. My daughter taught it to us years ago, and our family is still hooked!

Here’s how: Turn all the Scrabble tiles upside down in the center of the table. Each player takes seven tiles, turns them over and quickly creates words in his own crossword arrangement in front of him. Each word must connect with another, as it would on a Scrabble board. As soon as one of the players has used all seven tiles to form his words, he shouts, “Take 2.” Each player now draws two more tiles and attempts to work them into their arrangements. Continue this

fast-paced play with each player drawing two tiles when someone shouts, “2.” As the game progresses, players may rearrange their words as they work in the new letters. When all tiles are gone from the center, the game proceeds until one player has used up all of his letters. Count individual scores by adding up the points printed on each of the letters for all words formed. Deduct points for tiles not used. Highest score wins. I-SPY MEMORY

GAME Pull out your kitchen junk drawer, gather family members around and say, “Ready, Set, Go!” Quietly study the contents for 20 seconds. Hide the drawer, and ask everyone to write a list of items they saw. Designate an amount of time for writing, depending on ages of your kids. When time is up, read off your answers, and the longest list wins. For another round, try other storage areas, such as a tackle box, sewing basket or your desk drawer when kids visit your office.

Efficiency the goal for Sask. health care Provincial REGINA - Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says his government will set a target that will ensure no one waits to receive emergency room care in his province. Wall put out a lofty list of goals for the health system ahead of a meeting in British Columbia next week with his provincial and territorial colleagues. Besides saying no one will have to wait for care in the ER, the list also says all people will have access to a specialist and diagnostics within one week and everyone will be connected to a care team that includes a family physician. It also says everyone will receive whatever surgery they need in less than three months. National OAKVILLE, Ont. For those needing an extra caffeine boost in the morning, Tim Hortons will be introducing a larger extra large cup next Monday. The company says the new cup will offer coffee lovers across Canada an extra large coffee at a value price. To accommodate the new 710-millilitre cup, the names of the other cup sizes have shifted. The original small is now extra small, the medium is now small, large is now medium and the old extra large is now large. *** OTTAWA - Canada’s aid agency says it will look into how Ethiopia spends the assistance after publication of a report that accuses

the African country of an abusive and systematic practice of forcing rural villagers off their land. The response came after a report released Tuesday by New Yorkbased Human Rights Watch blasted the Horn of Africa country for its “villagization” program that it says has forcibly relocated 70,000 indigenous people, and aims to move 1.5 million by next year. The forced expulsions have cut villagers off from food sources, basic health services while forcing them to endure abuse from the Ethiopian army, the report alleges. *** HALIFAX - A member of the military has been charged with communicating information that could harm Canada’s interests to a foreign entity. Jeffrey Paul Delisle, 40, appeared in Halifax provincial court today on two charges under the Security of Information Act. Court documents say one of the alleged offences happened between July 6, 2007, and Jan. 13, 2012, while the other is alleged to have occurred last week. The Halifax-area man also faces a breach of trust charge under the Criminal Code that is alleged to have happened between July 6, 2007, and Jan. 13, 2012. All the offences are alleged to have occurred in the areas of Halifax, Ottawa and Kingston, Ont. Delisle was ordered to remain in custody and is due back in court Tuesday.

International WARSAW, Poland - A Polish court slapped a fine on a popular singer who bad-mouthed the Bible — the latest episode in which authorities grapple with religious defamation in a traditionally Catholic country that is growing increasingly secular. Dorota Rabczewska, a singer who uses the stage name Doda, said in a 2009 interview that she doubted the Bible “because it’s hard to believe in something that was written by someone drunk on wine and smoking some herbs.” A Warsaw court ordered her Monday to pay a fine of 5,000 zlotys ($1,450) for offending religious feelings. *** DUBLIN - A transatlantic legal showdown could determine whether Gerry Adams, the Irish republican chieftain long at the centre of Belfast war and peace, faces trial over his IRA past. Police investigating the Irish Republican Army’s 1972 killing of a Belfast mother of 10 want to seize taped interviews with IRA members that Boston College hoped to keep locked up for posterity. Researchers fighting the handover in court next week warn that disclosure could trigger attacks against IRA veterans involved in the secrecy-shrouded project and undermine Northern Ireland’s peace. The case of Jean McConville, a 37-year-old widow, commands special attention among Northern

Ireland’s nearly 3,300 unsolved killings because of allegations that Adams, the conflict’s leading guerrilla turned peacemaker, commanded the IRA unit responsible for ordering her execution and secret burial. Adams denies this. *** ROME - Italian naval divers on Tuesday exploded holes in the hull of a cruise ship grounded off a Tuscan island to speed

the search for 29 missing people while seas were still calm. One official said there was still a “glimmer of hope” that survivors could be found. Prosecutors, meanwhile, prepared to question the captain, who is accused of causing the wreck that left at least six dead and abandoning the Costa Concordia before all 4,200 people onboard were safely evacuated after the vessel

capsized Friday night. Navy spokesman Alessandro Busonero told Sky TV 24 the holes will help divers enter the wreck more easily. “We are rushing against time,” he said. The divers set four microcharges above and below the surface of the water, Busonero said. Television footage showed one hole above the waterline to be less than two meters (6 feet) in diameter.

Hall of fame for only two? Guess who OK, so there’s a Baseball Hall of Fame and a Football Hall of Fame and one honouring hockey players, one that fetes surfers, another one for the game’s best basketball players. And dozens more. But just think for a minute if there were a North American Sports Hall of Fame with room for only two people. Who would they be? Where would you start? Wayne Gretzky, regrettably, wouldn’t make it. He’s certainly the Great One, but not great enough to be one of two people in our all-time Sports Hall of Fame. Vince Lombardi is perhaps the name one associates most with the game of U.S. pro football, but, sorry Packer fans, he’s on the outside looking in, too.

Golf offers Arnie, Jack, Tiger and the great Bobby Jones, but they don’t make our exclusive hall. Love basketball? Wilt the Stilt? Magic? Michael Jordan? Great players all, but not up to snuff in our two-person All Time Sports Hall of Fame. Who would you pick? Soccer player Pele? If this were a non-North American sports column, Pele would make the Big Two, but not here. Sorry. Joe DiMaggio? Mickey Mantle? Cy Young? Bobby Orr? The Rocket? Gordie Howe? Red Grange? Joe Montana? Johnny U? Sorry, over and over again. There is room in my All-Time Sports Hall of Fame for only two busts, and they belong to, in no

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist particular order, Babe Ruth and Muhammad Ali. S u r p r i s e d ? Yo u shouldn’t be. Don’t agree? That’s OK, it’s a free country, but name another athlete who would bump either of those iconic superstars from their pedestals. In their primes, they were beyond sports figures and the most famous people in the world. When you think of baseball figures, Babe Ruth stands above all. Yankee Stadium

was the House that Ruth Built. He famously made more money per year than the president of the U.S. Heck, he had a candy bar named after him. He put the “roar” in the Roaring Twenties. Ali, heavyweight boxing’s gold medalist in the 1960 Summer Olympics, met with world leaders, fought all over the world and made headlines on the front pages by being found guilty of draft evasion charges, refusing induction into the U.S. military by famously saying “I ain’t got no quarrel with the Viet Cong.” He was stripped of his boxing title, and was out of the sport for four years while fi ghting his legal battles. Then he came back to the sport and was a four-time heavyweight champion. Ali was simply “The Greatest” (Gretzky was merely “great”) and he joins the Babe in this most exclusive Halls of Sports Fame. • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “The Columbus Blue Jackets, in their short history, have changed numerous head coaches, assistant coaches, made the playoffs just once and sit in

the NHL basement. Maybe they should be called the Strait Jackets.” • From Dwight Perry’s Sideline Chatter in the Seattle Times: “Spotted on the readerboard at Nashville’s Grace Cumberland Presbyterian Church: ‘God has no favourites. Our sign guy does - go Preds.’” • Blogger Chad Picasner, on why a $13.9 million luxury-tax bill is no big deal to the Yankees: “Same as they pay a utility infielder.” • Steve Simmons of Sunmedia.com: “The nickname going around about Mike Cammalleri tells you all you need to know about the traded Canadien. He was known as ‘Me, Myself and Mike,’ which is how a lot of underproducing goal scorers are perceived on teams.” • Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “The Walt Disney Company is ready to submit a bid in the latest reported attempt to purchase the Los Angeles Dodgers. So, the Dodgers may still suck, but at least the bathrooms will be clean.” • And on the same subject, Perisho says: “Goofy has been running the team the last few years and he is in the middle of divorcing Grumpy.” • Another one from Perry: “Oregon football player Mark Asper, attending a pre-Rose Bowl function at an L.A. restaurant, might have saved a choking diner’s life when he applied the Heimlich manoeuvre ... making him

the first offensive lineman ever celebrated for holding.” • Currie again: “Dennis Rodman announced plans to coach a new topless women’s basketball team. There will be a short preseason followed by a full slate of exhibitionist games.” • Another one from Currie: “Despite rumours to the contrary, God did not send Tim Tebow to Denver because it’s the closet NFL city to heaven.” • Among the top 10 little-known facts about Tim Tebow, from CBS’s David Letterman: - “Fell to Earth after his home planet Krypton exploded.” - “Can turn water into Gatorade.” • Perry again: “Rangers coach Rangers coach John Tortorella apologized for trashing officials after the Winter Classic. The NHL then apologized for fining him $30,000.” • Tiger Woods, to reporters, offering up a Christmas present for PGA Tour galleries: “I’m swinging the club well enough that you don’t need to walk out there with hockey helmets on.” • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “Will everybody please stop all of this crazy talk about Peyton Manning going to the New York Jets? This would be like Einstein enrolling at Mississippi State.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

INTERNATIONAL SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Mixed martial arts fighter Cristiane Justino Santos has been suspended and fined for testing positive for steroids. Known in MMA circles as Cris Cyborg, the California State Athletic Commission fined Santos US$2,500, suspended her licence and nullified her Dec. 17 victory in San Diego against Hiroko Yamanaka. Santos said on her website she unknowingly ingested banned substances from a dietary supplement she was taking to reduce weight for the bout. *** INNSBRUCK, Austria - The head of the organizing committee for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics has “no doubts” that all necessary construction work will be finished on time, despite reported delays at over 70 building projects. “It has nothing to do

with a real delay that could harm the Games,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said Monday while visiting the Winter Youth Olympics. “We are well on track — 87 per cent of the infrastructure has been done already.” Chernyshenko said slowed construction works in the region would not affect the Games because less than 15 per cent of all building projects are directly related to the event. *** LONDON - A British athlete who tried to pay the costs of his Olympic preparations by selling himself on an online auction site has found a sponsor at last. Sprinter James Ellington thought he had succeeded in covering the travel, accommodation and kit costs for the London Games when he received a 35,000 pound (C$54,550) offer on eBay. It turned out to be a hoax but a shaving product manufacturer has stepped in to sponsor the 26-yearold Londoner. A string of injury problems meant Ellington had missed out on major sponsorship deals or national lottery support.

NATIONAL WINNIPEG - Two coaches remain suspended over hazings on a Manitoba Junior Hockey League team. MJHL commissioner Kim Davis has announced the results of a second league review into what happened on the Neepawa Natives team. The report concluded veteran members of the hockey club picked on rookie players in at least four separate hazings. Head coach Bryant Perrier resigned from the team last year and remains suspended from coaching until April 1. The suspension of former assistant coach Brad Biggers has been extended to July 1. Both suspensions are effective in all Hockey Canada jurisdictions. *** Canada’s top-ranked rhythmic gymnast isn’t currently part of the group that will be going to the London Olympics and both her mother and the national team coach want that to change. “Her dream was to go to the Olympic Games and now she feels she was tricked by Gymnastics Canada,” said Naida Chamilova, the mother of Mariam Chamilova. Gymnastics Canada officials are reviewing the situation but say they cannot predict what may happen. Mariam Chamilova, 18, was born in Moscow, grew up in Ottawa and now lives and trains in Toronto. She initially qualified

for the senior six-member rhythmic group in October 2010. Acting on the advice of her coaches, she declined her spot so she could continue to compete as an individual, with the understanding she could still make the group roster at a later date. *** MELBOURNE, Australia - Milos Raonic showed quite convincingly that he’s over last week’s jet lag issues. The 23rd-seed crushed Italian Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 at the Australian Open on Tuesday and joined fellow Canadians Aleksandra Wozniak and Stephanie Dubois in the second round. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., withdrew from the Kooyong Classic last week after playing one match at the warmup event in Melbourne, saying he felt fatigued after travelling from India, where he claimed his second career title at the Chennai Open.

PROVINCIAL TORONTO - Ben Heenan remains the top prospect for the 2012 CFL Canadian College Draft. The CFL’s scouting bureau had the Saskatchewan Huskies offensive lineman atop its top-15 prospects list Tuesday. The six-footfour, 310-pound native of Grand Coulee, Sask., was ranked No. 1 on the initial list Sept. 19. Heenan was named an all-Canadian for the second straight year despite making the switch from guard to tackle this season. He is scheduled to cap his season Saturday in the East-West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Boise State defensive end Tyrone Crawford moved into the No. 2 spot after not being included on the first list because he hadn’t yet been declared eligible for the draft.

10 ways to reduce your tax bill (NC)—The holiday decorations are all packed away, the New Year's resolutions made, and spring is around the corner. Before you know it, tax season will be here. Before you start filing your taxes, here are 10 ways that may help you reduce your tax bill and may even land you a refund. For individuals 1. Plan ahead – Make sure to gather your receipts and NETFILE code, register for My Account, and sign up for direct deposit before April 30. Submitting your income tax and benefit return before the tax-filing deadline means you can avoid having to pay late-filing penalties. 2. Tax-free savings account – A tax-free savings account (TFSA) is one great way to save money, since you don't pay tax on any income you earn from investments in your TFSA. 3. Registered retirement savings plan – Any income you earn in a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) is exempt from tax, as long as the funds stay in the plan. RRSPs help you save for your retirement and get a break at tax time too. 4. Public transit tax credit – If you or someone in your family is a regular user of public transit then

you may be able to claim a non-refundable tax credit based on the cost of eligible transit passes. 5. Pension income splitting – If you are receiving income from a pension, you can split up to 50% of eligible pension income with your spouse or common-law partner to reduce the taxes you pay. 6. Students – Are you still in school? Students can claim the tuition, education, and textbook amounts. Have you graduated recently? You may be eligible to claim the interest you paid on your student loans. 7. Child care expenses – For those who have children, you may be able to claim child care expenses that you or your spouse or common-law partner paid so that either of you could work, do research, or go to school. 8. Home buyer's tax credit – If you're a first-time home buyer you may be eligible to claim $5000 on the purchase of your new home, which can save you up to $750. For people who are self-employed 9. Hiring an apprentice – Did your business employ an apprentice? A salary paid to an employee registered in a prescribed trade in the first two years of his or her apprenticeship

contract qualifies for a nonrefundable tax credit for the employer. 10. Creating child care spaces – Did your business (which is not mainly a child care services business) create licensed child care spaces for the children of your employees? If so,

you may be eligible for an investment tax credit for the child care spaces you created. More tips on how best to prepare your 2011 income tax and benefit return can be found online at www. cra.gc.ca/getready.

A quick refresher on Tax Free Savings Account (NC)—Since its introduction three years ago, 6.7 million Canadians have opened a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA), according to the Canada Revenue Agency. If you count yourself among those who are still unsure whether a TFSA is for you, here's a quick refresher that the experts from Desjardins Financial Security have put together: What's a TFSA? It's a registered savings account that allows you to invest tax-free throughout your life and earn income to help make your plans happen. It's for anyone aged 18 or over who wants to build their savings taxfree. You can contribute up to $5,000 a year to your TFSA. Your annual contribution limit will appear on your Notice of Assessment after your tax return has been processed. If you have a leftover balance, this will added to your contribution limit in the following year. It's an ideal savings product because it's flexible and easy: One great TFSA advantage is that there usually isn't a minimum deposit required to open an account, which makes it easy to pay yourself first. And you can easily access your funds if you're in a tight financial spot. It's also worth noting that your withdrawals won't compromise your eligibility to receive federal benefits like the Guaranteed Income Supplement, Employment Insurance or the Canada Child Tax Benefit. Any withdrawals you make can be replaced in the following year. The TFSA is also an

excellent retirement savings alternative if you've maximized your RRSP contributions. Remember, your TFSA deposits are tax-free and tax-receiptfree. In other words, you will not receive a tax receipt for your deposits nor will your withdrawals be taxed like an RRSP. This means more money will stay in your pocket. Remember to diversify, within your annual limits: If you're like most Canadians, you might have a modest amount in a TFSA account that is

perhaps making one or two per cent interest, if you're lucky. Well, now it's time to shake things up with a little diversification. Some people are choosing investment options like stocks, bonds, mutual funds and guaranteed investment funds or GIFs. Also, you now have the option of borrowing the full $15,000 to invest. Unlike other investment loans, the interest paid on this loan cannot be used as a tax write-off. For more information

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Jackie urged Nick to smooth-talk Pam into spying for them once again. Bill went to extreme measures to make sure that no one knew he helped Steffy lie about her condition. Amber anxiously awaited Ridge’s reaction to Rick’s new fashion line. Nick accompanied Pam on the game show “Let’s Make a Deal,” where wacky hijinks ensued. Rick confided in Brooke about how he was passing off Amber’s designs as his own. Hope began to question her values when it came to matters of the heart. Katie confronted Bill about scheming with Steffy. Nick went to great lengths to keep Donna from seeing him and Pam together on TV. Wait to See: Bill does the unthinkable to keep Katie in the dark. Hope makes a startling declaration. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Will’s behavior was reminiscent of EJ’s during his confrontation with Sami. The usually calm Jennifer got physical during an argument with Nicole. During his health crisis, Daniel found an unexpected friend in Jack. Bo and Hope uncovered Alice’s unexpected “partner.” Melanie was torn between restarting her relationship with Chad or repairing her friendship with Abigail. Michael determined that Nikki acted in self-defense when she killed Diane. Later, Nikki turned herself in to the police. Kevin was heartbroken after Eden sent him the photos of Chloe and Daniel’s kiss. Sharon voted in place of Victor at the board meeting and prevented Adam from getting what he wanted. Ronan coached Nikki in trying to remember what happened at the park. Angelina admitted to Kevin that she wasn’t pregnant or running from Vinnie. Wait to See: Victor and Nikki are reunited. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The changes you’ve waited to see in your work situation might not be happening quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Although the pace is slow, it’s ongoing. Expect to hear news soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You should be feeling very proud of the fine effort you’ve made to get that important project done. Now take some time out to celebrate with family and friends. You’ve earned it.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re close to reaching your objectives. That’s the good news. But be careful: Your aspects show lots of potential distractions looming. Stay focused and keep your eyes fixed on your goals. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to let that suspicious Cancerian mind create a problem where none exists. What you might believe is an act of betrayal could be nothing more than a misunderstanding.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Lion’s heart overflows with self-confidence. All you need to do is tap into it, and you’ll be able to handle any change that must be made regarding that recent surprise development. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The need to watch what you say becomes increasingly crucial this week. Be as temperate as you can with your comments and avoid arguments for the sake of controversy. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A longtime family problem presents new demands. But this time, you won’t have to go it alone: Someone else is asking to help share your responsibilities. Let it happen.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A period of feeling vulnerable is about to give way to a stronger, more selfconfident aspect. Use this new strength to reaffirm promises you’ve made to others and yourself. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A creative dilemma stalls your progress. Instead of letting it raise your ire, use the time to re-examine your aims and, perhaps, come up with a new target. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your nimble will finds a way for you to work out those newly emerged problems plaguing your new project. Stay with it. The results will be well worth your efforts.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might feel overwhelmed at having to decide which new opportunity you should follow. Best advice: Check them all out and see which offers what you really want. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Continue to tread water before you even consider plunging into something that never seemed quite right. Some facts will soon emerge that can help you make a decision. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re a natural-born peacemaker. You value truth and have little patience with those who lie to you for their own purposes. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
