Cheers to Spectra Place for offering free Mom and Tots skating four days a week.
Cheers to the men and women of the Estevan Police Service who keep my street and other streets safe in Estevan. Because of the criminal activity that sometimes takes place on our street/park, the dispatchers and the officers respond in prompt fashion and care about what happens to all of us. Keep up the good work. Cheers to our newspaper carrier. No matter the weather, our paper is in our mailbox between 5:30 and 6:30 every morning. THANK YOU! Cheers to all the service/retail companies in Estevan, that develop the resources required to properly train their employees. I will spend money when I can go into a well-stocked store, and find knowledgeable, helpful, and polite employees.

After Dark gets facelift with After Hours After Dark/After Hours hosted its inaugural double performance on Saturday as Regina’s Black Drink Crier scored well with the Estevan audiences. The band got things started at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum, playing to a crowd of close to 30 people. Judd Stachoski, lead guitar player, opened with a solo set before bringing the rest of his cohorts up. Following the performances at the gallery, the band stepped over to Eddie’s Neighbourhood Grill and Bar to play a louder set, more appropriate to the after-hours lounge setting. Before Black Drink Crier began their set, Cameron Wensel, the band’s lead vocalist, sat down for an interview with the Southeast Trader Express.
Wensel said this was the first art gallery they’ve performed in, and they had to scale their production back a little bit. He pointed to the miniscule drum kit that was set up in the corner, and noted their rock show later that night would be a little larger. “We’re a bit louder than that. We’re a bit of a rock band, said Wensel. “You gotta be a little more volume conscious. You want to play more subtle tunes, whereas when you’re in (a bar) you’re pretty loud, especially with the tornado brain of a drummer we have. The audience at the gallery got into the spirit of the band’s songs. During Stachoski’s opener, he played a song by The Bystanders, another band he is a member of, entitled Bark Like a Dog.
The chorus was greeted by some howls from the crowd, while a song played by the band inspired a pair to get up and two-step in the generous main gallery space. Black Drink Crier includes Wensel, guitar and vocals; Stachoski, lead guitar and vocals; Phillip Legrand, bass and vocals, and Nathaniel Bowen on drums. The group hasn’t played the kind of setting they did at the art gallery, and it was a bit of an adjustment to turn their tunes into something that fit the space. “We haven’t played this one quiet, so we’ll see how it works, said Stachoski before starting into one song that they converted without any trouble. Wensel said the band has only recently gotten together

officially, but noted he has known Stachoski since high school and has been playing with him ever since. “He’s my roommate, and we jam in the basement. Nat and Phil, Regina’s a pretty small music community, so we kind of met each other from there. It’s not like there was an official ad that was taken out. They’ve known one another for about eight years, and Wensel said now they are a little older, they have been able to find the time to take the band a little more seriously. “It takes awhile before you settle into your style. The more established you become, the more invitations you get to places like this. Wensel noted they also host a concert series type show every couple of months in Regina under the name The Buffalo Jumps. They perform with like-minded bands and said they like to get loud. Black Drink Crier is planning on recording an album this spring. Wensel noted his brother has a recording studio in Regina, and they are completing the finishing touches on the album’s tracks. In 2011, Wensel released an album under the Black Drink Crier name called Porch Fire, which was produced with fellow Regina band The Lazy MK’s. Their preparation for the gallery show was limited. Wensel said they arrived in Estevan, had a bite to eat, and as they set up their instruments they were getting a feel for how things would work. As they performed, they rolled through both original tracks and covers. While Wensel was the primary vocalist, Stachoski sang on the mic as did Legrand who sang during their cover of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon. Following the performances, EAGM director Amber Andersen noted the move to add the After Hours

As the old saying goes: “Knowledge is power.” Though I rarely find myself in the middle of a game of Trivial Pursuit, I do like to stay on top of my easily accessible random factoids just in case. I would always hate to be the guy who brings the team down when we’re in fierce board game competition. I do know some people who are bottomless pits of useless information. They may have a lot of practical knowledge as well, but it’s the trivial facts that impress me the most. As a friend of mine says when he meets somebody who can list pointless information off the top off his or her head, “You seem pretty encyclopedic with that stuff.” I’m regularly brushing up on some of the lesser-known facts, in hopes that they will one day pay off. They may not even be lesser-known facts, but if I’m learning them for myself, then they are lesser known. One of my favourite places to find useless information is the Mental Floss website, or for those inclined to read print only, the magazine Mental Floss. It is here that I learn interesting but oth-
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers erwise pointless things like how peacock only refers to the male of the peafowl species. The females are peahens. One that I’m certain could be an answer to a question in the science section of a Pursuit game would be that a day on Mercury is longer than a year. It’s a strange concept for us, but it makes perfect sense. It simply takes the planet longer to complete a full rotation than it does to orbit the sun. I have more factoids for those interested in learning something new today. I admit that not all of these facts and stats are revelations, but surely there is one that will help with you impress somebody tonight around the dinner table. Felix the Cat was the first image ever broadcast on television, when, during testing, a statue of the feline’s liking was rotating on a turntable. Witches convicted during the Sa-
lem Witch Trials were not burned but hanged, probably because witches had spells to protect them from flames. I do have a certain respect for A.J. Jacobs, the author of The Know-It All, who in the book recounted his experience reading the Encyclopedia Britannica from A to Z. Devoting yourself to such an experiment would definitely lodge volumes of unimportant facts inside the brain. I don’t quite have the attention span to take things that far, but I do my best to soak up random facts throughout the day, paying particularly close attention to the most outlandish ones. I do a lot of reading, whether it’s the day’s headlines, something online or Mercury news stories. I’m only mildly competitive, but my family, at times, likes to show off its smarts to one another. Everybody basks in the glow of being the know-it-all in the family. I just hope these tidbits stick in there somewhere and wind up earning me some bragging rights. I so rarely have any sort of advantage over the siblings in my family. I have to do whatever I can to get an edge.
Expectation to feed globe the farmer’s burden If one aspect of agriculture captures my attention more than any other, it’s the prospect of the sector feeding an ever-growing population. When I see predictions of the world population hitting nine billion by 2050, I tend to shudder. There are countless people going to bed hungry now, and as the population climbs ever higher, it is hard not to see the situation worsening. There are, of course, reasons for people being hungry today, and truly in many instances, it is not a situation of food shortage. Certainly there are localized shortages, especially in countries with extreme weather conditions, and where they still utilize subsistence farming techniques. On a world scale, however, farmers have stayed ahead of the food demand curve. There is a corresponding issue of wealth distribution which leads to hunger. Within communities even in Canada, there are those who fall through the cracks of rather broad social programming and find themselves living on the street, or in a home that is struggling to put food on the table. On a country-by-country basis, the
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist problem worsens. There are countries where many starve because there is not enough money to import food. And then there are other issues at play too. Corrupt governments, local officials and others looking for self-gain over the welfare of the populace, gouge systems in many countries, meaning even when food exists, it never makes it to mouths needing it most. And there is the issue of infrastructure. Modern combines moving across Canadian fields, putting grain into modern trucks, where it is safely stored in steel bins before being exported via elevator, train and ship. It’s a system that means most bushels produced are harvested, sold, and find their way to world markets. In many countries the system is far less advanced. Grain is bagged. It may face insect infestations, rats and other
vermin. It may be lost in transit from the ship to some small village where it is being taken in an ox-drawn cart. While there are many impediments to feeding the world today, the issues also hold out hope for the future. Yes, we have to see farmers produce more. That will mean variety improvements, expanding acreages and better cropping techniques. But greater strides could be made by improving grain handling around the world. That would seem simple enough. Better systems exist and simply need to be implemented. There is a cost though, and the world has not even thought about wealth distribution that will allow developing countries to make such infrastructure strides. How countries deal with the corruption, while being potentially important to avoiding future starvation, is also a problem with a less than clear answer. And there is potential to at least discuss how to put the brakes on population growth, although that debate is again something few seem willing to even start. There are ways the world can help farmers feed the masses, but at present there seems little will to make changes, leaving the onus on the shoulders of producers.

What makes an intriguing hoax?
He She He She Said
We never seem to be too short on stories to draw our attention away from important things. Whether you’ve been following Lance Armstrong’s confessions of a fraudster and cheater or Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o’s fake dead girlfriend, there is a lot of drama coming out for things we generally don’t really care about. It’s come to the social media light that some Subway sandwiches are only 11 inches, instead of the specified foot-long. Now that’s scandalous. The Te’o tribulations caught my attention, like so many others, because of how strange it is. I have no trouble figuring out Lance Armstrong. He broke his sport’s rules, like everyone else in the cycling world, and raised a bunch of money for himself with a lie. That’s easy. The Te’o story is just bewildering because of how many questions it raises. There are few answers out there at present, and when we learn something new, more questions arise, even if we may know who the culprit is. That’s what makes an enthralling hoax. A big story came out when Te’o’s girlfriend died last fall. More recently, it’s been revealed that his girlfriend wasn’t a real person. She only existed as some prank to woo the football player. His relationship with this woman was exclusively online and over the phone. I really don’t know how anyone falls for this stuff, but I’ll assume Te’o was just a chump who got royally duped. The more you learn about this story, the stranger it gets. Nobody really has anything to gain from playing a prank on a college football player. As I’ve read, Te’o got a lot more publicity and Heisman Trophy consideration following the hype around the fake dead girlfriend. Te’o was the only person who could have gained anything from this. With the Heisman hype comes a higher draft pick, a bigger contract and potentially millions in sponsorship deals. I’d like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but the whole thing is very bizarre and otherwise inexplicable. It’s when the answers don’t make any sense that a hoax becomes so interesting. —Jordan Baker
The most impressive and interesting hoaxes are elaborate and leave people wondering “How did these people fall for it? The Manti Te’o hoax is a pretty good example, whether or not he was involved. If he was involved, then all the power to him. He’s gained a lot of attention as a football player and his career may benefit from the fake-online girlfriend he claims to have had. My favourite hoax was featured on Dr. Phil. Four women were all in love with a man whom they had met online. All women dated this guy and ended up falling in love with him, despite never meeting in person. For some of the women, the hoax went on for years, because the man they fell in love with never existed. Actually, the person running the online profile was a woman! She used voice altering technology when she called the women and led them on for a long time before she was caught. My overall reaction to this was: Why are some people so dumb? Don’t we all know that the Internet isn’t as open and honest as we’d like it to be? I know several people who have created online dating profiles using a stolen photo – just for fun! I don’t know anyone who has taken it so far as to trick people into loving them, of course. My point is that it’s easy. I definitely feel pity for Te’o, and for the women on Dr. Phil’s show. They seem to have had their hearts broken because they genuinely cared for the liars who played them online. But, heartless as this may sound, the severe “ouch! factor of these hoaxes only makes them more intriguing. The emotional investment of all involvement really keeps my attention. These elaborate, lasting hoaxes are interesting, and encompass all that is evil in the Internet, but awesome when exploited by the media. –Tonaya Marr

Apartment life is never-ending bliss I’ve been renting the same apartment for twoand-a-half years now. It’s a delightful little twobedroom basement suite located near the university. It is always dark inside, and has a habit of smelling like curry. I’ve lived with a handful of roommates, each unique and special in her own way. I’ve lived in each of the bedrooms, and have rearranged the living room furniture once. There have been a se-
ries of upstairs neighbours, each more thrilling than the last. The latest instalment likes to do carpentry in the middle of the night. I do so love waking up to the sound of saws and hammers. There’s been a bat in my room. A flooded bathroom thanks to the neighbour above. A mass of spiders that have fortunately disappeared. It’s never dull at my dear apartment! And lately, we’ve been the victims of a series of

The freezer is empty as a result of my skepticism. We’re also the lucky new hosts to a mass of ants. I noticed one in the bathroom last week before heading home for the weekend. When I returned on Saturday, I found the linoleum floor swarming with the beasts, along with several other surfaces in the house. Bless my roommate’s heart, the girl acted quickly by taping a wad of tissue into a crevice of the baseboards! Unfortunately, the ants were too clever for mere tissue, and she retreated to her locked
bedroom in defeat. I purchased some ant traps and did a little research. Did you know that ants dislike the smell of vinegar? Splashing a mixture of vinegar and water all over the bathroom floor has proved this theory correct. I feel as though I’ve won this temporary battle, but the ants will be back to wage their war come the next melt. Fortunately, I expect to be out of this apartment of doom by the end of April. I’m not sure where I’m going, exactly, but I know for a fact that I won’t be staying. Residential developments to move into next phase The residential developments in the Energy City continue to move forward, undeterred during the winter months. The utilities are almost all installed, as Trimount Developments continues working with SaskPower and SaskEnergy to have power and gas accessible to the available lots. Jason Fleury, president of Trimount, said the goal is to have power, gas and phone lines installed by March 1. Phase 3A of the project will be winding up in the next few months as Trimount turns to Phase 3B. The former phase includes all single-family dwellings, while the upcoming portion of the project will include multiple-dwelling houses and a four-storey apartment. The developer hosted a groundbreaking in the fall, and since then has been busy preparing the site for the building to come. “We completed about 80 per cent of the deep-site servicing on the first Phase 3A,” said Fleury. “Right now we’ve been selling lots, and I believe we’re at about 50 per cent sold out.” Fleury noted they will
immediately be starting construction on seven single family homes. Shortly after construction begins, those houses will be going on the market with Century 21, who is selling all the real estate in the Dominion Heights area. “As soon as we get into spring we’ll complete all the services, the sidewalks, the roads, the paving of the roads. We’re anticipating, as soon as that is complete, jumping into the next phase, which is 3B. That’s where we have a lot of multi-family in that next phase. “We’re looking at doing something very close to

of next year so that all the roads are in, all the sidewalks are in and all that land is available to build on.” He said they are hoping to be building multifamily and single-family lots all through the summer and fall. They will continue to evaluate how fast work is completed based on their sales, but Fleury said lots and homes are selling fairly quickly. “We’re going to continue to evaluate it based on our sales, but everything that we’ve seen (shows) a real strong market out there still,” he said. They are receiving weekly requests about what is available for purchase in the new subdivision, he added. “One of our struggles is securing the people to build these homes. It’s a really tight labour market, but we’re prepared to meet that challenge in the summer when the weather breaks here.” Early this week there was machinery on site prepping for the construction of the next set of houses. “Estevan, over the course of the last five years, has done very well. We have no indications there isn’t going to be another
good five years in front of us,” said Fleury. “As soon as we finish 3B, we’ll work with the City of Estevan and start making preparations for 4A.” There are other residential plans being executed in the city. Essex Developments is heading up the Meadows of Estevan, turning the patch of land in the city’s northwest sector into another burgeoning subdivision. Graham Crips, project manager at Essex, noted they will moving forward with Phase 1 this spring as they begin to develop single-family residential, multiple-family residential and a seniors’ assisted living home along Wellock Road. “I’ve been instructed to proceed with Wellock Road for sure,” said Crips. “Wellock Road will be completed, I would guess, by the end of this year.” Phase 1 of the construction process includes completing work along the north side of Wellock. He said the city will also be completing their work along Wellock up to Meadowview Drive. The subdivision is slated to include 146 single-family units as well as eight-plexes and sixplexes. Crips is optimistic about how sales will proceed given the success of other residential projects in the city. “Trimount is having reasonable success, so market uptake should be high,” noted Crips. “(They are) selling, so I anticipate when we get Wellock going, that we’ll start selling a few more and then we’ll have to proceed with Phase 1.” He said the development agreement is still being hashed out. When they are able to begin construction is dependent on when the development agreement is signed, but Crips is expecting they will be able to get going in the spring. As soon as the agreement is signed, he said they will begin making applications to SaskTel, SaskEnergy and SaskPower, at which time they’ll have an approved subdivision.

Why aren’t the malls full? We have winter here Canadian shoppers are idiots. Recently I had the chance to peruse the Weyburn City Centre Mall. I had visited the Smitty’s there before, but never had actually seen the rest of the facility. I was amazed at how empty it was. The former anchor tenant, the Co-op, was long gone. Most of the rented space was occupied by various forms of government, including the Southeast Regional College and Service Canada. If not for the college, the place would be nearly vacant. Nearly all private enterprise had abandoned this mall. A cellphone kiosk had a sign noting they had moved to a building near the Subway, a block or two away. I should have clued
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile in on this over a year ago when I did a story about a defensive driving course running in the parking lot of this mall. This is not a large parking lot, yet they were able to pylon off enough of it to practise loss-ofcontrol spin techniques. This is just one example of little used malls I have seen throughout Saskatchewan. I can’t speak for the last four years, but for much of the 10 years we were in North Battleford, the Frontier Mall was
little used, especially after Walmart moved to its own building. Without an anchor tenant, that end of the mall withered until finally it was turned into medical offices. It has been a long time since I’ve been to Kindersley, but the last time I was there, the mall was pretty empty too. That may have changed with the growth of the oilpatch in the region. The mall’s website showing leasing opportunities shows about half occupancy, however.
Yorkton used to have two malls. I can’t remember the name of the second one. We used to call it the “Zellers Mall” when I was a kid. In the 1990s, it too, was largely vacant, especially after Zellers left. Eventually it was demolished and a casino now stands on the site. The Estevan Shoppers Mall was a repeat of the scenarios until recently. When we first moved here in 2008, you could fire a cannon down the hall and never hit anyone. I suspect the growth of the oilpatch has fuelled its revival, with many of the formerly vacant stalls now filled. But not all are, I must point out. With Estevan and Weyburn’s economies so similar, it begs the question of how Estevan’s mall has seen a resurgence, but
Weyburn’s is but a shell. Yorkton’s Parkland Mall has, over the years, largely done well. Rarely has it seemed more vacant than full. Perhaps that’s because it was large enough to have a critical mass of varied stores, combined with being in a community with the third largest trading area in the province after Saskatoon and Regina. Malls throughout North America have been suffering. No one wants them for some reason. The preference for retailers is now to have their own location with an outside door. That might be fine on the warmer half of the continent, but here, where there can be snow on the ground for as much as six months of the year, it’s idiocy. It just goes to
prove Canadian shoppers need their collective heads examined. To think: Shopping in a warm, climate controlled environment, with no snow to tromp through - what’s not to like? Malls may not be cities in a bubble, but they’re the next-best thing. Usually they’ve got lots of parking, too, except for a few days in December. Indoor malls, not strip malls, should be the first place occupied by retailers. I don’t know if it’s the mall’s lease rates that are killing them, or they are just out of vogue, but I would much rather have a warm shopping experience than a cold one. Three arrested in million-dollar Dutch art heist National OTTAWA - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty urged the federal broadcast regulator to grant a radio licence to a company in his Ontario riding even though government rules on cabinet responsibility forbid ministers from influencing the decisions of administrative tribunals. In his letter to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, Flaherty praised Durham Radio Inc.’s bid to obtain a licence to operate a new FM station for the Toronto area. The broadcaster, based in Flaherty’s Whitby-Oshawa riding, was one of several applicants last year
for the hotly contested spot on the FM dial. The company — which already has country and rock radio stations in Oshawa and Hamilton — was proposing an easy-listening outlet. “Durham Radio has a strong track record for providing excellent service for their listeners and this puts them in a solid position to offer this new service, Flaherty wrote in the letter, dated March 30, 2012. “As the MP for Whitby-Oshawa, I support their proposal and their application. In a statement to The Canadian Press, Flaherty said he would “continue to be a strong advocate for the people and community

In a notice of motion to Federal Court, where Khadr is suing the federal government for breaching his constitutional rights, John Norris and Brydie Bethell said they made the decision to step down last week. “Current counsel concluded they were required to withdraw from representing (Khadr) for reasons they are not at liberty to disclose to the court, Norris said in his application. “Counsel have advised the plaintiff that they intend to bring this motion. Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Yvette van den Heerik told The Associated Press. Van den Heerik said the suspects’ involvement in the heist was still being investigated. Dutch police did not immediately have more details of the arrests or the suspects. Thieves are believed to have broken into the gallery through an emergency exit at the rear of the building and snatched the paintings. The following morning, only white spaces and broken hanging wires were left. Police were on the scene within five minutes of an alarm being triggered, but the thieves were already gone by the time they arrived. *** BALI, Indonesia - An Indonesian court sentenced a British grandmother to death on Tuesday for smuggling cocaine worth $2.5 million in her suitcase onto the resort island of Bali — even though prosecutors had sought only a 15-year sentence. Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, wept when judges handed down the sentence and declined to speak to
reporters on her way back to prison, covering her face with a floral scarf. She had claimed in court that she was forced to take the drugs into the country by a gang that was threatening to hurt her children. Indonesia, like many Asian countries, is very strict on drug crimes, and most of the more than 40 foreigners on its death row were convicted of drug charges. Sandiford’s lawyer said she would appeal, a process that can take several years. Condemned criminals face a firing squad in Indonesia, which has not carried out an execution since 2008, when 10 people were put to death. A verdict is expected in the trial of Sandiford’s alleged accomplice, Briton Julian Anthony Pounder, next Tuesday. He is accused of receiving the drugs in Bali, which has a busy bar and nightclub scene where party drugs such as cocaine and Ecstasy are bought and sold between foreigners. Two other British citizens and an Indian have already been convicted and sentenced to prison in connection with the bust. In London, British Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire told lawmakers Wednesday that the government strongly opposes Sandiford’s sentence.

Kaepernick shines as Smith sits You may not have heard of Wally Pipp, but if you have, you know that he and Alex Smith are two of the most famous members of an exclusive club. It’s the “Step Aside for Sports Greatness club and Pipp, a first baseman for the New York Yankees did it to allow Lou Gehrig into the Yankees’ lineup in 1924, and Smith, a quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers, did it to give Colin Kaepernick an NFL stage on which to shine in 2012-13. Pipp was the Yanks’ regular first baseman in 1924, but he had a headache one day, so the manager inserted the rookie Gehrig into the lineup in his place. That rookie turned out to be a guy nicknamed “The Iron Horse for he was so good, and so sturdy that he played 2,130 consecutive games, a record that stood until Cal Ripkin, Jr., finally eclipsed it in 1995. Wally Pipp, meet Alex Smith. Smith, the No. 1 overall NFLdraft pick in 2005, finally emerged as a reliable starting quarterback for the 49ers in 2011, and led them to the NFC

championship game, where they lost to the New York Giants. They were doing fine in 2012, too, with a 7-2 record in November, when Smith suffered a minor injury and watched while his backup, Kaepernick, took over at QB. And boy, did he take over! He showed off his rocket arm with long, accurate passes. He was unstoppable as a scrambler, when the need arose. He looked like ... well, the football equivalent of Lou Gehrig some 90 years ago. When Smith was healthy again, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said, basically, “Sorry, Alex, I’m sticking with the understudy. The secondyear coach was taking a big chance, putting the fate of a Super Bowl contending team in the hands of an inexperienced second-year player,
while the seasoned, playoffhardened vet watched from the bench. The 49ers earned a firstround playoff bye and swatted away the Green Bay Packers in their divisional matchup as Kaepernick ran for 181 yards and two TDs, and passed for 263 and two more TDs. The 49ers’ juggernaut then dispatched the top-seeded Atlanta Falcons to advance to the Feb. 3 Super Bowl. And Alex Smith? This might be the first case in matrimonial history where a ‘no-Perkins’ clause is written into the pre-nuptial agreement.â€? • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “Tiger Woods has reportedly proposed to his exwife Elin, who is demanding a $200 million no-cheating clause in their pre-nup. It will go down as the most expensive mulligan in history.â€? • NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “Aweek after saying, ‘I’m not leaving Oregon for the NFL,’ Chip Kelly has agreed to be the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Coalers win two as they eye top spot The Bienfait Coalers kept at their goal of a third straight Big Six Hockey League championship last weekend with a pair of wins over the Arcola-Kisbey Combines. Last Saturday the Coalers travelled to Arcola, trouncing the Combines 7-0, while on Monday, they hosted the Arcola team, who came out with a little more fight. Game two of their home-and-home series saw the Coalers win 5-2. The Coalers haven’t had much trouble finding the back of the net this season, as the team holds four of the top five scorers in the league, led by Bren-

games in hand. A couple of tight games were played Jan. 18. The Wawota Flyers squeaked past the Redvers Rockets 5-4 with a shootout win. The Midale Mustangs were downed 4-3 at home by the Combines. The Combines sit in fifth, with 15 points and are tied with the Rockets. Last Saturday night, the Rockets toppled the Carlyle Cougars 4-1 and the third-place Carnduff Red Devils beat the Flyers 4-2. over the Cougars who have just two wins in 14 games this season. The Red Devils also put up double digits in a game on Jan. 20, when they beat the Oxbow Huskies 10-6. In a game on Jan. 22, the Red Devils shut down the Mustangs for a 5-4 win. Senior hockey provincials are now underway, and a number of Big Six teams are vying for Saskatchewan titles. The Flyers got off to a good start Tuesday night when they travelled to Kipling and captured a 4-3 victory in the first game of a best-of-three series. The next game is in
Wawota tonight and a win will send them to the Senior C semifinals. The Combines also kick off their Senior A provincial bid tonight at home when they host Lumsden. The Mustangs play Assiniboia in the Senior A division, with that series starting in Assiniboia on Feb. 1. The Red Devils host Grenfell on Saturday night for their series’ opener against the Spitfires in the Senior B category. In the Senior C division, Redvers hosted Radville on Thursday for game one, but results were unavailable at press time.

Roughriders begin to move pieces around in offseason Provincial REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders have re-signed defensive lineman Tearrius George and released former allstars James Patrick and Sandro DeAngelis. George was tied for ninth in the league with six sacks last season. He also recorded 19 tackles and a fumble recovery while appearing in all 18 games for Saskatchewan. Over six CFL seasons, George has posted 95 defensive tackles and 21 sacks. Patrick, a safety, spent the last five seasons with
Riders after signing as a free agent in 2008 out of Stillman College. In 2012, he had his worst statistical year since his rookie season, registering 40 tackles and no interceptions. Patrick was an all-star in 2010, when he recorded 68 tackles, nine interceptions and a touchdown. He has 227 defensive tackles, 18 interceptions and two sacks in his career. DeAngelis, from Niagara Falls, Ont., is a threetime all-star kicker. He was the outstanding Canadian of the 2008 Grey Cup, where his five field goals helped the Calgary Stam-
peders beat the Montreal Alouettes 22-14 at Olympic Stadium. National TORONTO - Toronto FC finally has a firm date for when Ryan Nelsen will officially take over as head coach. Nelsen, who is currently an active defender with English Premier League side Queen’s Park Rangers, will officially join Toronto on Feb. 1. He plays his last game with QPR on Jan. 29th at home against Manchester City. The 35-year-old New Zealand international was
hired Jan. 8 by new Toronto president and general manager Kevin Payne while still under contract with QPR. There was speculation Nelsen would have to finish the season in England, where QPR is in last place in the Premier League and fighting to avoid relegation to a lesser league. The MLS season kicks off March 2, while QPR finishes its league schedule May 19. *** TORONTO - Milos Raonic will lead the fourman Canadian squad in Davis Cup play next month
against Spain. The world No. 15 from Thornhill, Ont., is coming off a fourth-round loss to Roger Federer at the Australian Open. Raonic will be joined by Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver and doubles specialist Daniel Nestor of Toronto on the Canadian team. The World Group first-round tie is scheduled for Feb. 1-3 on the indoor hardcourt at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver. World No. 11 Nicolas Almagro leads the
top-ranked Spanish team, which includes Albert Ramos, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez. Ramos will be making his debut for the national team. Rafael Nadal will sit out due to injury while regular team member David Ferrer is skipping the first-round tie. Nadal hasn’t played since last June, mainly due to tendinitis in his left knee. He is scheduled to return to the ATP Tour on Feb. 4 at the Chile Open in Vina del Mar. With Nadal out, Ferrer guided the five-time champion to last year’s final, where it lost to Croatia.

6DIHW\ 7LS :LQWHU 6DIHW\ ,QGRRUV DQG 2XW Canadian winters are famous for being cold. The mercury keeps dropping, and suddenly, the bears aren’t the only ones hibernating! While it’s true that many of us spend more time indoors in the winter, there are also those who embrace the outdoors, the snow and cooler temperatures. For many parts of Canada, winter can mean bitter cold and winter storms that bring high winds, icy rain, or heavy snowfall. This winter, get prepared for whatever the season will bring, whether you are indoors or out. Follow these FIVE tips for staying safe in a Canadian winter: 1. Get informed and go outdoors. a. Are you eagerly awaiting your chance to hit the slopes? Dreaming of making tracks with snowshoes? Check out
AdventureSmart.ca to help you plan for a safe and enjoyable outing, whatever your passion. AdventureSmart.ca encourages everyone to follow the three T’s: Trip planning, training and taking the essentials for any outdoor adventure. Here are some key tips for winter adventures: b. Before heading out, complete a trip plan and leave it with friends or family. You can find a template online at AdventureSmart.ca http://www.adventuresmart.ca/trip_safety/ planning.htm c. Get trained for your adventure and stay within your limits. d. Take survival essentials with you and equipment like a communications alerting device in case of an emergency. In avalanche terrain, for example, essential equipment includes a probe, beacon and shovel. e. Wear a helmet when skiing, skating, snowboarding and snowmobiling. Dress in layers to avoid hypothermia and keep your head, ears and hands covered to prevent frostbite. 2. Stay safe indoors Winter is a busy season for fires in Canada. That’s why it’s important to be mindful of fire prevention and safety. Make sure you have working smoke alarms, don’t leave burning candles
unattended and if a pot catches fire while cooking, put a lid on it. Read more tips. 3. Check your family emergency kit a. You likely have some basic emergency kit items already in your home, such as a flashlight, battery-operated radio, food, water and blankets. The key is to make sure they are organized, easy to find and easy to carry (in a suitcase with wheels or in a backpack) in case you need to evacuate your home. b. Use this checklist to help put your kit together. 4. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle Prepare an emergency kit and keep it in your vehicle. Refresh the supplies for winter. For example, add an extra blanket or new food items. Use the following list for ideas. 5. Check weather reports When severe winter weather threatens, Environment Canada issues special alerts to notify Canadians in affected areas so that they can take steps to protect themselves and their property. Check out Environment Canada’s page on winter weather to learn more about the various weather alerts. Winter may be cold, but it doesn’t have to be dangerous -- stay warm and safe and enjoy your winter, inside and out!

Bridal Creative ways to get married Many weddings adhere to tradition, with a big church wedding, a white gown and a bustling reception. Still, there are some couples whoprefer to do something a bit unique and unconventional. They may choose to get married underwater or while skydiving. If a “creative wedding is for you, here are some ideas to think about. * Skydiving: The concept of taking the plunge takes on an entirely new meaning when jumping out of a plane at several thousand feet while reciting vows. * Wedding of the “Stars: Trekkies may want to recite vows while dressed in costume and speaking native Klingon, while Star Wars
fans may want to do so with Storm Troopers attending the festivities. * Mountain climbing: Couples can reach new heights while scaling a mountainside and saying their “I dos. * Life in the fast lane: Couples who are NASCAR fans can recite their vows and then take a spin at 200 mph around a neighborhood track. * Amused festivities: Some couples might prefer to get hitched while enjoying the ups and downs of their favorite roller coaster or other amusement park rides. * Scuba diving: Some couples prefer to recite their vows with a few bubbles in between and marine life as their witnesses.

Finding the right banquet hall for your big day scenes look at a reception hall, from how accommodating the staff was to how flexible the banquet hall was with regard to pricing to how open the staff was to suggestions. Wedding planning isn’t easy, so if friends, family members or coworkers recommend a hassle-free banquet hall, that recommendation can remove a lot of the stress from planning a wedding. * Consider the size of the facility. Some couples prefer an intimate affair with relatively few guests, while others will desire a large wedding party with lots of guests. Couples can find a banquet hall that’s capable of catering to small or large wedding parties, but find one that fits your party specifically. If your wedding party is small, then avoid a larger facility that will appear empty. If the party is large, make sure there’s adequate room so guests won’t feel like they’re sitting on top of one another during dinner and dessert. * Don’t downplay decor. A banquet hall with an attractive decor is not only aesthetically appealing but can appeal to a couple’s finances as well. Such a hall likely won’t need any additional decorations, while a banquet hall
that’s unadorned and lacks embellishments will, and those decorations can dip into a couple’s overall wedding budget. Compare the costs of the more decorated banquet hall with the one that’s more plain in appearance, factoring in the cost to decorate the latter, and you might just realize the one with more aesthetic
appeal is more affordable in the long run. * Prioritize privacy. Few couples would be open to strangers having easy access to their wedding reception. When shopping for a banquet hall, look for one that gives you and your guests all the privacy you need. Many couples have taken to hosting
the entire ceremony at a hotel, which may handle the bulk of the planning and remove the hassle of transportation for out-of-town guests. However, couples considering a hotel should look for one that can promise privacy from other guests at the hotel who aren’t there for the wedding. The reception room should

Planning a wedding is no small feat, as couples are faced with many decisions seemingly from the moment they get engaged right up until they walk down the aisle as man and wife. One of the biggest decisions a couple will make is where to host the reception. Couples must consider a variety of factors when looking for the right banquet hall to host their reception. The wedding is a celebration, and the banquet hall is where the couple and their guests will let their hair down and hopefully enjoy a festive and memorable night. Because the reception is typically the most lengthy portion of a couple’s wedding day, it’s important to find a place where everyone can be comfortable and enjoy themselves. The following are a few tips for couples looking to find the ideal banquet hall to host their wedding reception. * Ask around. Word-ofmouth is a great way to find the right banquet hall. Ask friends or family members who got hitched in the same town where your ceremony will be if they can recommend a reception site. These friends or family members can provide a behind-the-

Helpful hints when choosing floral arrangements Couples must make many decisions when planning their wedding, not the least of which is choosing floral arrangements. Some couples have never had to make choices regarding floral arrangements, so it’s understandable if they need some help before making a decision that will likely make a significant impact on the appearance of their
weddings. * Go with your own style. Couples should not feel pressured to go with a more traditional style if that’s not something that suits them. Instead, choose a style that most appeals to you, be it neutral or bold colors, formal or more casual arrangements, and so on. Your style might also reveal a preference for something

other than roses, which is perfectly alright. It’s your wedding. * Stay in-season when possible. When choosing a floral arrangement, it’s important to consider when you’ll be getting married and which flowers will be in-season. It’s possible to find most floral varieties all year, but if you choose seasonal flowers, you’ll
likely pay less and such flowers will be more readily available and durable. * Don’t go it alone. The wedding day is going to be busy enough without brides and grooms having to worry about arranging the bouquets. A professional florist, ideally one who has come highly recommended, should be able to work within your budget and

produce a visually stunning end product. * Consider candles to save money. Many couples hope for a floral centerpiece at each table, but that can prove costly. If the floral budget is somewhat limited, supplement the centerpieces with candles to save some money. The centerpieces likely won’t be as grandiose, but smaller
floral arrangements coupled with candles can create a romantic feel. * Stick to the budget. Couples will find it’s very easy to go over budget quickly with regard to floral arrangements. But a good florist should be able to work within your budget and produce an arrangement that’s visually impressive without costing a fortune.

Feed on these wedding favour ideas Do you have a shelf or cabinet that’s filled to the brim with wedding favors such as engraved ice cream scoopers, cake servers, cheese spreaders or tea light candle holders? If you do, you’re not alone. As couples pore over guest favor options, many select trinkets or knickknacks that, while thoughtful, end up collecting dust in someone’s home. Edible gifts also can be thoughtful -- and flavorful! Guests may look forward to an edible favor because it’s a memento of the special occasion and it won’t become a permanent fixture in their homes. There are many edible favors from which to choose. They can also be customized according to the theme of the wedding. Chocolate It’s difficult to find an edible favor more universally beloved than chocolate. Rich and inviting,
chocolate has long been given as a symbol of love and devotion. Chocolate candies and baked goods can work well for wedding favors, provided the favors are refrigerated to avoid melting. Ideas for chocolate favors include individually packaged truffles, gourmet brownie bites, candycovered chocolates with an inscription, chocolate covered apples, chocolate coins, and other similar creations. Chocolate molded designs (much like those chocolate Easter bunnies) are another idea. Cookies Sweet cookies also make good edible favors. Butter cookies are a favorite because they are sturdy enough to cut into different shapes. Professionally iced, these cookies can be a masterpiece to behold. Some couples opt for customized fortune cookies that express personalized
sentiments to guests. Make-your-own Sometimes it’s less expensive to give guests kits that they can take home to create their own edible treasures. Options abound and can include everything from personalized packets of hot chocolate to tea bags. Other couples choose
among mixes for making cookies or cakes. Candies It has become popular to have a self-serve candy bar at many weddings. Guests are invited to step up to the display and serve themselves from a series of different confections. Autumn weddings could
able from craft stores and can be the perfect way for guests to make that candy portable. Other edibles From cupcakes to maple syrup to personalized bottles of barbecue sauce, couples have so many options for guest favors at their disposal.
