Burton Cummings is performing at Spectra Place tonight at 8 o’clock.
Music legend recalls the power of a hit Burton Cummings has played as a piano soloist in a lounge, and he’s played before 500,000 people at SARStock in 2003. Now the Canadian music icon is set to do his “damnedest” to put on a great show in Estevan. The Guess Who’s lead vocalist, who also released solo albums that broke sales’ records in Canada when 1978’s Dream of a Child went three times platinum, is the latest Canadian act headlining Spectra Place with a concert tonight. Cummings spoke with The Southeast Trader Express from Los Angeles earlier this week. Big or small, Cummings said the venue isn’t as important as the audience. “It doesn’t matter to me as long as the place is full and the crowd is with me.” He said he never gets tired of singing hit songs. He learned the lesson early in his career to be appreciative of hits after opening for Jefferson Airplane in the old Winnipeg Arena. “I was full of piss and vinegar, and we were tremendous. We thought they wouldn’t be able to compare to our show. Four bars into White Rabbit, (the audience) forgot we were just on stage. That’s when I learned the power of a hit record, because the first four bars made them forget about our 60-minute set.” Now, every chance he
gets to perform is something of a blessing. “Every year it’s more special than the last,” he said, noting the number of musicians from his era who have died recently, from Levon Helm to Donna Summers. Cummings said he feels incredibly lucky to still be performing with The Carpet Frogs, the band that has been accompanying him for more than a decade. He said their shows are tight, everybody is singing and it’s anything but boring. He’s now working on mixing his upcoming DVD, Burton Cummings Live at Massey Hall. The footage was captured during two performances, one from 2010, and another in 2011 that he wanted to do so each performance was his best. Cummings said the project is great for him because he’s honoured to have his name associated with Massey Hall, one of Canada’s most hallowed concert halls. “The ghosts in there are amazing,” he said, referring to the musical greats who have graced the Massey Hall stage before him. He considers part of his legacy, and that of The Guess Who, to be tied to the era they produced their music in, before the computer became such an important creative tool in producing music. “We don’t even use tape anymore. With auto-
tuning even Paris Hilton can make an album. It makes me prouder of what we did, without some clown helping me with a computer.” He said if his vocals sound good on a recording, it’s because he sang the song well in the studio. Because they had no choice but to perform well during a recording session, he said, “I’m so proud of how the records have stood up over time.” He is now dabbling in poetry, which he began doing about five years ago. While recording his latest album he couldn’t sleep after a long day at the studio, something he said was not unusual, so he went online to his blog and put together a couple of poems. There was a positive response to the pieces, and that was the start of his poetry compilation. He’s now publishing a book of poetry, featuring 47 original pieces, with a release scheduled for later this year. “I realized there’s a huge market for this, (which I) discovered through the Internet, and found an amazing following for my words.” He noted writing a poem as opposed to a song is different because of how each is received by the listener or reader. “Lyrics are different than words read without accompanying melody.” The poem styles range from blank verse to iambic pentameter.
Cummings is comfortable marketing himself on the Internet, and he’s embraced the technology that has changed the face of music distribution since he first started recording in the 1960s. He’s even moved on from MySpace to Facebook and really enjoys the immediacy of connection that these social networks provide. Keeping up with the technology of the times is necessary, according to Cummings, who noted, “Anybody who goes the other way is lost in the dust.” Cummings has owned a personal computer since the 1980s and remembers writing a foreword to a friend’s book on his Apple II Plus. While writing just the foreword, he ran out of hard drive space on the computer. He said he’s not as computer savvy as Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates and he doesn’t know code, but he can find his way around in the digital world. He now continues to blog and uses his computer to store his music. “I used it to build a world-class music library. I have 150,000 songs in there. If we started listening to it right now, it would be June 2013 before repeating the first song again.” Cummings is set perform tonight at Spectra Place with his band The Carpet Frogs. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Canada is either getting more peaceful or other countries are becoming less so. The former would be ideal. Canada jumped three spots to rank as the fourth most peaceful country on the planet, according to the 2012 Global Peace Index. That’s pretty good, but we can definitely do better. Iceland is No. 1, and when have we ever been OK with losing to Iceland? They were the evil people in the second Mighty Ducks movie. I guess the peace list didn’t take into consideration Hollywood portrayals. Canada, in every movie, is way more peaceful than that Icelandic teenage hockey team. In order to be peaceful, however, we probably shouldn’t be pointing fingers at Iceland. That would be counterproductive. It would be better to embrace them and just say it’s water under the bridge. We forgive them for besting us this one time. That alone should bump us up into the top three. The United States is ranked 88th, and still, the top 100 is OK if you’re one of those kids who was fine with just scraping by in school. Actually one of the things helping the U.S. rank so
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers highly is us. Having good relations with neighbouring countries is a category on the Global Peace Index and ours is pretty good. Our southern brothers, without us, would have only Mexico as a neighbouring country and maybe Cuba. That certainly wouldn’t help their score. Canada can take credit for keeping the States out of the 90s. Just don’t tell that to any American you encounter. Would you want to risk it with the people ranked 88th on the peace list? Some people appear to feel that peace is overrated. There seems to be a lot of concern over the Northwest Passage, and our fourth-peaceful-country rating is somehow detrimental to defending our own turf, if those waters are in fact Canada-owned. We think so, but not many other people do. Either way, getting a bunch of warships and stationing them on patrol in the
ice should be considered an incredibly unattractive alternative. The diplomatic option, with a little expert negotiation, is the more mature thing to do here. Planting some guns in the north and telling everybody to keep off our water because it belongs to us is a little childish. Canada doesn’t need to overcompensate for anything. It’s difficult to see fellow Canadians disappointed by the fact we’re a peaceful nation. Isn’t a peaceful country what everybody should be striving for? I’m not so naïve to say we don’t need a military, but its primary focus should be on helping the country’s citizens in case of natural disaster like flooding. Any business the military must do externally is just a necessary evil. To be clear, the troops are not evil, just the military institution. It’s unfortunate any country has to arm itself to protect against another, but that is the reality of our imperfect world. Still, it’s nice to be considered the fourth most perfect in the world. If Vancouver and Montreal can get their people to just chill out, we might one day make that top spot. They’re ruining it for the rest of us.
Role for social media in agriculture There was an interesting article on the Western Producer website. It was about a speaker encouraging rural area businesses to get involved with the social media craze that has engulfed the world. The article was interesting for its content, but more so for the underlying aspect of the story, which indicated that rural areas are behind in terms of using the tools of social media to get their story out to the masses. Using tools such as Twitter and Facebook, have become pretty commonplace for most people these days. Most of us are as apt to check our Facebook page as we are our e-mail. Certainly a site like Facebook is flooded with a lot of worthless information, updates on what people are eating for breakfast, or the latest bad joke circulating the Internet, but it is also a freeway that can connect an individual business with their customers, and more importantly, with potential new customers. A small coffee shop can tell those who care what soup they are serving for lunch, or what folk singer is making a stop to perform, and they can do it with a few
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist key strokes. The message is generally also well targeted, going to those who have at least a passing interest in knowing what the soup might be. And with another keystroke, a person can check with the coffee shop to see if the soup is vegetarian, for instance. Social media allows for immediate discourse between a business and customer. For farmers, such social media sites offer a sort of power they have not truly had for years, not since the time everyone bought food directly from the farm gate. It’s not a case where every farmer is going to sell their wheat or cattle directly to consumers, but they can still have the discourse. There has been a real disconnect
between farmers and producers over the years. In more than a f ew situations, the disconnect has created a level of distrust going both ways. Many farmers are increasingly worried about food safety, even at a time when almost every farmer in this country is using the more current systems and farm management tools to ensure that what they produce is both plentiful and safe. Farmers can use social media to get that message to a broader base of people. Through posts and video, farmers can pull back the veil of what they do on the farm so consumers regain some of the lost confidence. Consumers, and in this case that is anyone a farmer befriends through a social media outlet, can also ask questions - and get answers. Many farmers might see posting about what they are doing in the field or cattle pasture as an imposition, but public perception is increasingly demanding that producers become more proactive in telling their story. Social media is an effective way to start that process.

Dating through the ages I was thinking about how instant our world is these days. Everything seems to happen so quickly. And then I started thinking about relationships, and how they are just as rapid as a trip to the McDonald’s drive-through. And this led me to thinking about how different relationships would have been years ago, back when my parents were young (a million years ago, I mean). Here’s my take on things, doing almost no research. Oh, and none of this is based on personal experience. I just want to point that out. 1980s
Have a fun night out with my girlfriends, totally sober. Meet a boy at a drive-in movie theatre. Talk politely, then give him my phone number. Go home and write in diary about how cute he is and how much he needs to call. Stare at the landline in the kitchen and listen to romantic songs on tape. Patiently wait three days for him to call, though spend lots of time chatting with friends on the phone. After allotted waittime, he finally calls. Spend 15 minutes hyperventilating into pillow after talking to him and call friends.
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me Discover that sisters listened in on the conversation with the boy, because the house has only one landline. Angrily demand that parents get more landlines. Sulk in room. Write more poetry in diary. Agree to meet for a
formal date. Go for an ice cream and consider holding hands. Chicken out. Plan to write about it in diary. Agree to several other dates, all formal and proper. Introduce to family. Father approves. Relationship. 2012
Get drunk with friends and go to a 3,000+ person party. Meet a random boy. Become Facebook friends. Twitter stalk. Actually, social media stalk. (Does he have Pinterest? Wait – do his ex-girlfriends have wedding boards?!) Have sober conversation via Facebook chat. Notice things in common and mutual friends. Exchange actual cellphone numbers. Refuse to text him first, but spend hours checking your phone and whining to friends. Finally he texts. Agree
to go for coffee. Spend 15 minutes hyperventilating because everything makes you look super pale. Consider going shopping. Text roommate. Leave house 20 minutes early. Panic. Spend 25 minutes filling up your car. Show up late. Goes well. Text Mom and tell her met a new boy. She promises not to tell Dad. Relationship. Tonaya Marr can answer all of your relationship questions, so send her an e-mail at tonaya.marr@ gmail.com or tweet her @ TonayaMarr.

Are bylaws on profanity a good idea?
He She He She Said Said
There is a small city in Massachusetts that has decided to implement a city-wide swear jar, fining individuals who swear in public. This isn’t some backwater town with three houses either; it’s a small city moderately larger than Estevan. The economy is in bad shape, we all get it, but there are better ways for public offices to raise money: toll roads, calling in overdue book charges or just a good old-fashioned property tax raise. Swearing is a funny thing. My mom hates it, absolutely hates swearing. When my siblings and I swear, she always says something about how we don’t have to use “those words.” She’ll mention something about how she grew up with my grandpa, cussing six ways to Sunday, and it didn’t influence her enough to start barking like a sailor. I recall coaching a bantam hockey team of 13- and 14-year-old boys. The staff consisted of me, another coach and a couple of parents. The parents had heard enough F-bombs and brought up the idea of a swear jar. At the end of the year, the most profane players would be buying the team pizza, and maybe the coaches a case of beer. It was maybe an OK idea, because the money would just be used for a team party, but the reasoning I thought was a little off. Every second word out of these players’ mouths was a swear word, while over the years I have cut down to about one in five, and my mother is oh so very proud of me. The parents said the players were swearing so much the words didn’t mean anything anymore, as though when they were younger they swore creatively, only for real emotional impact. I always just thought that if they don’t mean anything anymore, there isn’t a problem with saying or hearing those words. The swearing bylaw follows the same idea, but if swearing is such a problem, and a harmless one at that, maybe we should just let people go nuts. If the words lose their meaning, there’s no longer a problem. – Jordan Baker

Freedom of speech is an important part of being a Canadian citizen. I’d say that it’s probably one of my favourite rights, considering it’s one I exercise every single day. And so do most (all?) people. So taking away that right by controlling what words people can’t say in public isn’t right. Swearing may be rude and unkind, but it’s unfair to fine someone for expressing himself/herself. Sure, there’s the danger of a child hearing you cursing like crazy when you’re waiting outside 7Eleven on a weekend evening. But there’s also that same danger on TV, online, at home, at family members’ homes, etc. There’s no way to effectively censor every single outlet that can bring bad words to the ears of your offspring. If you’re trying to do so, maybe you need to consider your own life. Teaching children what is right and what is wrong is more important than trying to keep all the world’s evils out of their lives. There’s a whole wide world of bad words and bad people, and parents can’t censor everything their children interact with. Consider the banning of books. Banning a book makes it more appealing. Putting something on a list that says “society has deemed this inappropriate for you” makes tons of people want it more. I imagine that banning certain words will be the same. I remember being a kid and pulling on my lips when I said “apple” so it sounded like a profanity, just because I felt like a huge rebel. I knew that my parents would give me all kinds of heck if they knew what I was up to. This is the same thing, as far as I’m concerned. – Tonaya Marr

A treasure hunt for our techy times Geocaching is an activity that’s been growing for a number of years now as a sport of the 21st century. It was first played more than a decade ago and has since grown into an international web of treasures hidden all over the planet. There are caches stored all over the globe, on every continent, so there is lots of opportunity to grab a GPS unit and head out for a little high-tech hide and seek. The Estevan Public Library now has nine GPS units available to loan for free, as they’ve teamed up with Active Estevan to be a hub where everyone can pick up a GPS for a day of
exploring. Barb Wright, who is a public health nutritionist with the Sun Country Health Region and part of the Active Estevan committee, was on hand at the library last week for a workshop on how anyone can get involved in geocaching. And there is plenty of opportunity in the Estevan area. There are caches hidden all over the city, as well as a number down by Woodlawn Park and Roche Percee. To find a cache, the location can be looked up online, where it is identified by co-ordinates. With a GPS unit, the geocacher can pinpoint the exact location of the cache. After ar-
riving at the scene, it’s just a matter of finding the box. Wright noted that caches come in various sizes, some as small as a bullet, so they can be difficult to find at times. The cache includes an item that is to be taken and replaced with a new token, as well as a sheet to be signed and dated. “It’s a family thing,” said Wright, adding people can do it on their own or as a couple. “Retired people do it; any age group.” If you’re someone who likes to be on the move, geocaching may be for you, but the treasure at the end of the hunt may also be rewarding. “It depends on who
you are,” said Wright. “I find my children want the destination because they want to know what the trinket is inside.” “But definitely the journey, because it is so environmental,” added Dawn Hengen, an Active Estevan committee member. “You go in and you cache in, trash out and you’re taking the trash out.
It’s good for cleaning (the environment).” One of the tenets of the activity is that while people are looking for the cache, they pick up some garbage that is lying around. Wright added that it’s also good for tourism, as it may encourage people to go to places they have never been before. Many provincial parks have GPS
units to rent now as well, as there are often caches to find within the park. To borrow one of the GPS units at the library, Wright said it’s not necessary but it would be nice if people supplied a driver’s licence or other documentation, as the units are expensive. The units can be signed out for a few days at a time.

I called it: They are rebuilding the Plains It’s not often in this opinion column business one can lay claim to accurately predicting the future. Most of the time it’s a crapshoot. But in April 2011, I nailed it when I wrote Saskatchewan will need to rebuild the Plains Health Centre on Regina’s Ring Road, directly across the street from the previous Plains. On June 4, Premier Brad Wall announced approval in principle for the Plains Surgery and Outpatient Care Centre, “an ambulatory care facility that will be designed and built in partnership with the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, the
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. The centre will put patients first in its design, care delivery and location. “This facility will enable a level of co-operation and co-ordination in outpatient health-care services that has never been seen before in Saskatchewan,” Wall said. “Patients will appreciate having related health services in one location. For example, a cancer patient may be able
to receive a CT scan next door to where they receive chemotherapy treatment. Patients will be able to spend less time and energy waiting for appointments or navigating a hospital and more time looking after their health.” It was in early June 2011 when I had a chance to have a private one-on-one with Premier Wall. I first met him many years ago early in his days as leader of the Opposition, and it seems that once a year or so, we get a few minutes to chat and exchange ideas. So that June, I suggested to him that with the growing population numbers and the
Signed by Harlow’s mom Q: I bought a signed photo of Jean Harlow at an antique shop for $1,500. It is a beautiful portrait, and I am about to have it framed. Before I do, I want to send you a Xerox of the photo to see if you can help me date it and perhaps tell me how much you think it is worth. -- Bob, Homestead, Fla. A: Jean Harlow didn’t sign many photographs. She was too busy making films. She turned that task over to her mother, and the two women had very different signatures. I am certain that you have one of the photos signed by Harlow’s mother, and as such not worth a fraction of what you paid. I suggest you return the photo to the dealer for a refund. *** Q: I have a letter signed by John F. Kennedy thanking me for my volunteer work during his presidential campaign. I have kept it for more than 50 years, but the time has come to sell it. Any suggestions? -- Ben, Macon, Ga. A: First you need to have it authenticated. The sobering fact is that most presidential letters since about 1960 were signed by auto-pens. These are special machines that -- 24 hours a day, seven days a week -sign letters such as the one you have. To find out if it is, indeed, a personal letter from JFK, the time has come to consult with an autograph expert. I recommend Brian Kathenes, a certified appraiser of autographs and related materials. His contact information is P.O. Box 482, Hope, NJ 07844; www.
nacvalue.com; and brian@ nacvalue.com. *** Q: I have a sheet of firstclass postage stamps that are 12 cents. Any idea of when they were issued? -- Ken, Abilene, Texas A: Your stamps were issued between 1981, when the postage rate was hiked from 10 cents, to 1985, when it jumped again to 15 cents per stamp. *** Q: I have an original soundtrack recording of “M*A*S*H.” I have been
offered $30 for it. -- Susan, Portsmouth, Va. A: Take the money and run. According to several price guides I consulted, your LP was issued in 1970 and is worth about $10 in aboveaverage condition. fact Saskatchewan’s health infrastructure was built for only one million people, an number we have now left long behind, we’re going to need to build more hospital beds. The most logical place for that was in Regina, directly across the street from the old Plains. I can’t really describe his response, but looking back now, I think he might have been playing a bit coy with me. That’s because there’s no way a project like this had less than a year’s worth of consideration. But it’s a nice feeling to be right, all the same. There’s no question about the political purposes behind the name of this new health facility - the Plains. This is a poke in the eye from the Sask. Party to the NDP for their closure of the Plains. While most towns took the closure of their local hospitals hard, all of
southern Saskatchewan was riled about the Plains. It was the newest, most easily accessible hospital in Regina, and yet it was the one to close. It was also the one that largely served people from outside Regina, in the rural, not-so-NDP-friendly ridings. These people would later have to fight for parking spaces at the crammed General or Pasqua Hospitals. Ambulances, transporting people from out of town, would have to weave their way through the city to reach the older hospitals. Minutes are heart muscle, they say, and no one from out of town could understand why their precious minutes didn’t matter as much. That slight was never forgotten. Right now, this is planned as an outpatient facility. But prudent plan-
ning would also allow for future expansion into a full-fledged, overnight stay hospital. As Saskatchewan’s population grows to 1.1 and then 1.2 million, we will need it. At that point a helipad can be added, where it should be, on the ground just outside the emergency room, instead of on the roof of the General. Some people have noted that the last provincial election had very few promises made by the Saskatchewan Party, with very few dollars attached. Most have already been fulfilled. This is one of the first major initiatives we have seen since the election. I wonder what’s coming next? My money is on a domed stadium. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Search is on for mystery man in time capsule Provincial REGINA - A peek into the past has sparked a modern mystery in Saskatchewan. Provincial officials are trying to identify a man whose photograph was found in a time capsule that was encased in the wall of the Saskatchewan legislature. The capsule was opened last December to mark the building’s 100th anniversary. Kevin Doherty, minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission, says there’s no name on the photo and it isn’t on the list of the time capsule’s contents. Doherty says the man could be Franklin Joseph Robinson, a bureaucrat with the government at the time. But Doherty says no one is certain and he hopes someone can come forward to identify the man and explain how his photo ended
up in the time capsule. National DICKSON, Alta. - The company of a pipeline that leaked up to 475,000 litres of oil into an internationally popular sport fishing river in central Alberta says water samples have almost all been normal. Plains Midstream Canada spokesman Stephen Bart says monitoring is being done twice a day at 18 locations along the Red Deer River and the Gleniffer Lake man-made reservoir and recreation area. “With the exception of one reading on the first day, all of those readings have been well within Alberta guidelines for drinking water,” Bart said Tuesday at the Dickson Dam, which creates the reservoir. Plains Midstream has also been monitoring air quality in the area at three locations. ***
MONTREAL - An artistic parody is drawing sharply different responses in Quebec, depending on whom you ask. Police found a likeness of Premier Jean Charest, dead, on a printed leaflet when they entered the home last week of rival politician Amir Khadir, a Quebec MNA. The premier’s body is laid out at Khadir’s feet. It’s a parody of an 1830 painting by Eugene Delacroix, “Liberty Guiding The People,” which depicted a scene from the French Revolution. The altered painting is being used as a promotional item by a local rock band. The parody version puts Khadir in the role of a guntoting revolutionary. It also shows a police officer on his knees, crouching before a man dressed in a banana suit — the band’s singer, known as “Bananarchist.” *** VANCOUVER - Van-
couver Police Chief Jim Chu says he expects the number of people criminally charged for their role in the Stanley Cup riot last year to exceed 300 people and 900 charges. He says that’s believed to be the most people ever charged as the result of a single incident in Canadian history. The announcement comes as police downsize their riot investigation team, which included officers from all over B.C. and as far away as Calgary. Chu says the work of the investigation team has been amazing and they’ve had inquiries from police departments around the world about how investigators used video taken during the riot last June 15 to lay charges. The riot investigation hs cost $2 million, which included the $500,000 cost of the video lab which Chu says will be used in many
later investigations. International WASHINGTON - The Obama administration said Tuesday that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime and warned that the Arab country’s 15-month conflict could become even deadlier. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. was “concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria.” She said the shipment “will escalate the conflict quite dramatically.” Clinton’s comments at a public appearance with Israeli President Shimon Peres augured poorly for a peaceful solution to Syria’s conflict. Officials from around the world are warning that the violence risks becoming an all-out civil war, with Middle East
power brokers from Iran to Turkey possibly being drawn into the fighting. *** LONDON - The Falkland Islands government said Tuesday it plans a referendum next year on the political future of the tiny south Atlantic archipelago, seeking to end Argentina’s claims of sovereignty and to secure its status as a British territory. Gavin Short, chairman of the Falklands’ legislature, made the announcement ahead of Thursday’s 30th anniversary of the end of the brief 1982 war between Britain and Argentina over the islands, which saw more than 900 people die. Tensions have risen ahead of the June 14 anniversary, with Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez planning to press her country’s case at a meeting of the U.N.’s decolonization committee to be held on Thursday in New York.

Encarnacion a slugging surprise for Jays
If you’re a Major League Baseball player with a need for career rejuvenation, the Toronto Blue Jays may be the team to join. Edwin Encarnacion is slugging his way to MLB fame with the Blue Jays in a fashion similar to how Jose Bautista in 2010 suddenly became one of the game’s most feared sluggers. This year, Encarnacion is following a similar script. With a fairly decent career behind him with the Cincinnati Reds, Encarnacion never had a season home-run total exceeding 25. So far in 2012, he is among the American League leaders in fourbase clouts and is on pace to surpass 50 – Bautista country. Is it something in the Toronto water? Whatever the reason, Blue Jays’ fans are enjoying the turnaround by the Jays’ designated hitter. Toronto is extremely competitive in the AL East, a few games over .500 in late May, and involved in a terrific division battle involving all five teams. Pre-season previews of the Jays rarely even mentioned Encarnacion. Pundits raved about the
team’s pitching, led by Ricky Romero, and the offence led by Bautista and Canadian Brett Lawrie, who was entering his first full season. Suddenly, enter Edgar. Boom! Crash! Wham! John Lott of the National Post said Encarnacion made two swing changes of consequence since last year. He keeps both hands on the bat during his follow through instead of letting go with his right hand. And, wrote Lott, he has tried to eliminate the high leg kick he once used to set up his swing. Encarnacion hit 38 homers in the two seasons prior to 2012. The Jays say they thought he had enough pop in his bat to be a 25- to 30-homer guy. Even they were shortchanging their expectations. The 29-year-old Dominican may cool down as the season goes on, but the same things were said about Bautista during his breakout year. At the end of May, Encarnacion was tied for second in AL homers with 17 and was second in runs-batted-in with 43. Surprises are always part of professional sports teams. The Jays have had the bad (Adam Lind, who
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist
slumped so badly this year the Jays released the veteran first baseman) and they’ve definitely had the good (Bautista two years ago and now Encarnacion). For the Jays, it just may all add up to an exceptionally nice surprise this October. • R.J Currie of sportsdeke.com: “The NY Post reports Rex Ryan has lost 90 pounds. But enough about his ego.â€? • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times, on all the MLB injuries this year: “Carl Crawford ... Jacoby Ellsbury ... Roy Halladay ... Chipper Jones ... Matt Kemp ... Evan Longoria ... Mariano Rivera ... Troy Tulowitzki ... Jered Weaver ... So who will trot out the most impressive All-Star
lineup come July 10 - AL, NL or DL?â€? • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “Three things I’d rather watch on TV other than the Dolphins on Hard Knocks: (1) WNBA draft (2) PBS documentary on Al Gore (3) The Pirates-Brewers replay. • Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “Former Major League pitcher Mike Boddicker testified he saw Roger Clemens being injected in the buttocks with vitamins And that, my friends, is the reason Clemens never got scurvy while pitching in the big leagues.â€? • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “Johan Santana pitched the first no-hitter
in New York Mets history. Apparently he was able to do it by imagining he was pitching against the Mets.â€? • Another one from Currie: “Pau Gasol reportedly wants out of L.A. to join Chicago. Not the only Spaniard to want to run with the bulls.â€? • Currie again: “Dominik Hasek, 47, reportedly wants back into the NHL. When (MLB pitcher) Jamie Moyer heard about it, he said ‘Give the kid a chance.’â€? • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “If you are a person who whines, ‘C’mon, refs, let the players decide the game,’ next time you are the victim of a crime, don’t call the cops. Work it out with the criminal.â€? • Jeff ’s Rule, from Ostler’s column: “No TV announcer may use the phrase ‘New York football Giants.’ By now all of us are pretty clear that the New York baseball Giants moved to San Francisco.â€? • At TheOnion.com: “Quaint English village
bulldozed to make room for quaint English Olympic village.â€? • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, on Barry Bonds’ desire to work for the Giants in some capacity: “Baseball executives said Bonds will be welcomed back with open arms, just as soon as the commissioner can find jobs for the 1919 Chicago Black Sox.â€? • Norman Chad of the Washington Post: “Do you know how tough the Belmont is? To go a mile-anda-half when you’ve never done it before? That’s like asking me to go a year-anda-half into a marriage.â€? • Another one from Dickson, on this year’s NBA lottery: “As usual, Kim Kardashian got first pick.â€? • Blogger Chad Picasner, after the Padres wore camouflage uniforms in a recent game: “With an 18-37 record, this seemed appropriate.â€? Look Your Best For
Taman signed on for another year There’s never a dull moment around here. Ever. As the calendar flipped to the second week of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ 2012 training camp, one career ended while another one was extended. Which do you want first? Let’s start with the retirement. Highly touted wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, a former second round pick of the Carolina Panthers and record-setter at USC, missed all of rookie camp due to travel issues. He showed up for day one of main camp last Sunday and participated lightly in drills. Unfortunately for all of us, however, that’s the last we saw of him. An injury kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the week and on Thursday coach Corey Chamblin confirmed that Jarrett decided to retire. It appeared his heart wasn’t in it and he wasn’t prepared to put in the work which the
Rod Pedersen Rider Insider others were. See ya! As for the other announcement, when the Riders practised Saturday in Saskatoon, team President Jim Hopson announced a one-year contract extension for general manager Brendan Taman. It was appropriate, I suppose, because it was in Taman’s hometown. However at first glance the timing seemed a bit odd. Taman was precariously situated in the last year of his contract, facing a make or break season. Should the Riders implode, he would assuredly be out of a job. However if the club improved to the point of making the playoffs or even hosting a playoff game, you know he would be rewarded with a new deal.
However Jim Hopson, who has made no secret of his admiration for Taman’s abilities, said “why wait?” and finished the contract. At a closer look, Taman’s hay is already in the barn, so to speak. This past winter he oversaw the hiring of a new coaching staff, vastly overhauled the roster (as we discussed last week), harvested a wealth of import rookie talent and signed his Canadian draft picks. Mission accomplished. Go to Hawaii and put your feet up Brendan! Now the onus is on rookie coach Corey Chamblin to work this group into a contender. Taman has bought the groceries and now it’s up to Chamblin to make the meal. Bon appetit! It all starts this week with the first preseason game of the year in B.C., and once it kicks off, we can finally stop talking about last year. Enjoy the ride.

Every preschooler I know loves outdoor summer fun, birthday parties and anything to do with dinosaurs. Put that combination together, and it’s likely that a dinosaur-themed party will be somewhere in your parenting repertoire during the early years. So save this recipe and use it when it’s time to create sandy triceratops party favors. These surprises inspired by another place in time are something the kids will never forget. If there are older kids in the family who have already earned their degree in the dino phase, let them get their hands in the mix and help you prepare this sand-goop recipe to make triceratops party favors for their younger brother’s or sister’s party. Once this sand clay is off the stove and has cooled (yes, you’ll be cooking sand!), mold it around plastic eggs containing little plastic or rubber dinosaurs. If you
don’t have plastic eggs, mold the sand clay around the toys to form a ball. Anyway you do it, let them dry a few days until hard. On the day of your party, pass one out to each child, or hide them in your yard for guests to find in a treasure hunt. Invite them all to follow you to the sidewalk. Tell them to tap-tap-tap their eggs against the concrete. The eggs will break after a few tentative hits, and voila! Your party guests have just hatched a slew of baby dinos into the world! Perfect for a “birthday” favor. SAND CLAY RECIPE Put 1 cup clean sand, 1/2 cup cornstarch, 1 1/2 teaspoons powdered alum (in the spice section of your market) and 1/2 cup water in an old cooking pot. Stir with hands or a spoon. An adult should then place the pot on the stove, turn heat to
medium and continue stirring with a spoon. As it becomes warm, it will begin to liquefy. Continue to stir for 2-3 minutes until clay thickens. Remove from heat and spoon mixture onto cutting board. Let cool. Make above-mentioned party-favor eggs or enjoy molding the clay into shapes and characters. There are probably as many ideas as there are grains of sand between your fingers! *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. World Cup qualification turns sour with tie National CAMPBELLVILLE, Ont. - Sweet Lou will top the field Saturday at the $1.5-million Pepsi North America Cup on Saturday night. Sweet Lou, last year’s champion two-year-old colt pacer in the U.S., is the prohibitive 3-5 early favourite for the race at Mohawk Racetrack and will break from the No. 4 spot in the 10-horse field. The race winner will earn $750,000. Sweet Lou has won all three starts this season, including a track and Canadian-record performance of 1:47.4 in his elimination race as the 2-5 favourite. Warrawee Needy was second, 2 1/4 lengths behind. The son of 2003 Cup winner Yankee Cruiser won 10-of-12 starts last year. *** TORONTO - Kyle Jones, Brent McMahon
and Kathy Tremblay will join Paula Findlay and former Olympic champion Simon Whitfield on Canada’s Olympic triathlon team in London. Triathlon Canada announced the three athletes to complete the team Tuesday. Whitfield, an Olympic gold and silver medallist from Kingston, Ont., and Edmonton’s Findlay were pre-selected to the team last November. Jones, from Oakville, Ont., was an alternate on the men’s team in 2008, when Whitfield won silver. Whitfield won gold in 2000 when triathlon made its Olympic debut. Victoria’s McMahon raced in the 2004 Games in Athens and was a bronze medallist at the Pan American Games last year. Montreal’s Tremblay will also compete in her second Olympic Games. She earned her first World Cup victory this year in

*** TORONTO - Canada had hoped to take two victories and some breathing room into a two-month break between World Cup qualifying games. Instead, the Canadians played Honduras to a frustrating 0-0 draw Tuesday on a night that will go down as an opportunity lost. “These are the games you have to win and we didn’t win it,” said captain Kevin McKenna. “It’s games like this that can get you qualified for the next round, lets hope we don’t look back on this game and rue the two points we didn’t get.” The Canadians will have to settle for four points from their first two matches in the third round of CONCACAF qualifying as they continue their quest for the country’s first World Cup berth since 1986. International BELLEFONTE, Pa. - A teenager whose complaints by his mother about Jerry Sandusky in
2008 prompted a grand jury investigation tearfully told jurors the former Penn State assistant football coach performed oral sex on him after meeting him through his charity. The boy, labeled Victim No. 1 by prosecutors, is now 18 years old. He choked back tears as he spoke of encounters that included Sandusky fondling him, kissing him and ultimately engaging in a sex act. The teen is the second of Sandusky’s accusers to testify in the former coach’s high-profile child sex-abuse trial. Sandusky faces 52 counts involving 10 boys over a 15-year span. Sandusky has denied the allegations. His attorney says the accusers have financial motivations for their claims. *** LAS VEGAS, Nev. The promoter for Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley is asking Nevada officials for a full investigation into the controversial scoring of their championship fight in Las
Vegas last weekend. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum says he submitted a formal request for an inquiry to the Nevada attorney general’s office on Monday. Bradley took the welterweight title from defending champion Pacquiao on Saturday night, ending the Filipino fighter’s remarkable sevenyear unbeaten run. Bradley won 115-113 on two scorecards, while losing by the same margin on the third. The decision was roundly booed by the crowd at the MGM Grand arena. Arum says the only way to restore fans’ confidence in boxing is to have an independent investigation. *** LONDON - A leading snooker player has received a suspended three-month ban after accusing Chinese players of cheating. ($15,500) for behaviour that was “unacceptable and offensive to China and the Chinese players.” Allen accused Chinese opponent Cao Yupeng of failing to penalize himself for a “blatant push” during their first-round match at the world championships in April. He then claimed cheating “seems to be a bit of a trait for the Chinese players.” Snooker is very popular in China, where 11thranked Ding Junhui is one of the country’s most famous sportsmen. Allen’s suspension will only come into effect if he commits any new rules violation in the next six months.

• To soothe minor burns in the kitchen, use the cut side of a raw potato pressed into the burn area for a minute or two. • “Personal appliances can get very dirty and can harbor many species of bacteria. One of the worst, in my opinion, is the cellphone. Make sure you clean it regularly by wiping front and back surfaces with a soft cloth dampened with alcohol. We touch our phones with our hands, and press them into our faces. It’s just smart to keep them clean.” -- W.D. in Indiana • Grilling season is in full swing. A great way to clean the grill surface is by using a wad of aluminum foil. It can be pressed into the grate to get all the gunk off, both before or after grilling.

Suspicious pap smear isn’t death sentence DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please say a few words about the prognosis and treatment of cervical cancer? My daughter, 45, was told at a recent checkup that she has a few cells of this kind, and she is reacting as if she has received a death sentence. Since it was caught early, should her outlook be more cheerful? -- J.B.

The Estevan Public Library hosted another installment of its Armchair Travel program. Irene Roy spoke with a small group of interested individuals about Russia and her travels to St. Petersburg.

ANSWER: All women are indebted to Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear for the early detection of cervical cancer. The cervix, by the way, is the necklike projection of the uterus into the vagina. It was the site for the most common cause of cancer death in women before the Pap smear came into wide use. That was in the early 1940s. Since then, deaths from cervical cancer have been cut in half, with about 4,200 deaths occurring annually and 12,200 new cases detected each year. Most of the deaths are in women who did not have Pap smear testing. I’m not clear what you mean by “a few cells of this kind. If the cells obtained on a smear show low-grade changes, a woman’s chances of having cervical cancer are close to zero. Follow-up smears are the only treatment needed. If the cells show highgrade changes, the doctor will perform a colposcopy. Col-
poscopy is an examination of the cervix with an instrument that has a magnifying lens so suspicious areas can be readily seen and biopsied. Results determine what the next steps should be. However, at these stages -- long before the cancer has spread -- it is still quite curable. Your daughter can trust her doctor to take the appropriate steps depending on the results of her Pap test. She does not face a death sentence. If she has any questions about her diagnosis, she should call her doctor for an explanation of her test results. The booklet on cervical cancer and Pap smears deals with these issues in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONO-
HUE: My husband and I are both 28. We have one child, a son. My husband felt a lump in his testicle and saw our family doctor. It turned out to be cancer. He was operated on. The doctor discussed many things with us, but we never discussed the prognosis. We need to know: What’s the usual life span of someone who has had testicular cancer? -- L.R. ANSWER: If your husband had a seminona, one of the common varieties of testicular cancer, and if it was in its early stages, your husband’s chances of living a long, full life are very high, over 95 percent. Your husband’s story is something that all young men should take to heart. Testicular cancer is a cancer of young men, most often males between the ages of 15 and 35. The earliest sign is a small, painless lump in the testicle. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Twist barbecue with an Italian grill you serve Grilled Eggplant Caponata, it’s delicious! GRILLED EGGPLANT CAPONATA
After almost 40 years of living in Texas, I’ve grown a bit tired of the brisket, ribs, burgers, hot dogs and chicken menu typically served at most barbeques. Even the side dishes from coleslaw to potato salad to beans could use a makeover. If you’ve run out of ideas for a holiday barbeque menu, try grilling Italian style! The beauty of making Italian dishes on the grill is that your guests can enjoy familiar dishes with a twist, served in a unique outdoor setting. Eggplant is found often in Italian dishes. It’s easy to grill and can be used in a variety of ways to please meat lovers, vegetarians and children. Improperly prepared eggplant can be slimy or bitter. To avoid bitterness, select young, tender eggplants with shiny skins that give slightly under light pressure. Overly mature eggplants can develop a bitter flavor. If you prepare and cook eggplant correctly, it’s delicious, and grilling makes it even more flavorful. My recipe for Grilled Eggplant Caponata is the perfect appetizer when served with grilled slices of bread, or makes an excellent Panini sandwich. You also can grill flatbread or pizza dough, pile the Caponata on top and sprinkle it with grated cheeses. It’s a delicious main course when tossed with hot pasta, or an excellent side dish when served cold as a pasta salad or tossed with crisp salad greens. Any way
Most vegetarians prefer that their food be cooked separately from the place on the grill where the meat is prepared. Clean your grill and prepare the vegetarian menu items first, or if you have a large grill, make sure that the meat and the vegetables are separate. 4 large portabella mushrooms 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 small red onions, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices 2 small eggplants (about 1 1/4 pounds each), cut into 3/4-inch-thick slices 3 red, yellow or green bell peppers (or a combination), stems, ribs and seeds removed, and cut in half 4 medium celery stalks 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 medium plum tomatoes (about 1 1/2 pounds), cut into 1/2-inch chunks 1 cup kalamata, Gaeta or green Sicilian olives, pitted and chopped 1/4 cup golden raisins 3 tablespoons drained capers 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh Italian parsley leaves or basil Dressing: 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil 1 teaspoon sugar or stevia 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper 1. If using a charcoal
grill, clean and lightly oil the grate where the food will be placed to prevent sticking. Open vents on bottom of grill, then light charcoal. Charcoal fire is medium-hot when you can hold your hand 5 inches above rack for 3 to 4 seconds. If using a gas grill, clean and lightly oil the grate where the food will be placed. Preheat burners on moderately high, cover for 10 minutes, and then reduce heat to moderate. 2. Wash portabella mushrooms in cold water. Gently rinse gills on underside of the mushroom. Cut off end of stem to remove any dried or hardened section. Let mushrooms drain, gill side down, for 1 minute. 3. Rub or brush olive oil onto the tops of the mushrooms (the round caps, not
the gills), onions, eggplants, peppers and celery stalks, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 4. Place mushrooms, onions, eggplants, peppers and celery on the hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook vegetables 8 to 10 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, turning over once and transferring to plate as they are done. Cool slightly until easy to handle. 5. In large bowl, mix vinegar, oil, sugar and pepper until blended. Cut mushrooms, eggplants, peppers and celery into 3/4-inch chunks; coarsely chop onions. Place vegetables in bowl with the dressing. Add tomatoes, olives, raisins, capers and parsley or basil. Gently toss ingredients and dressing until well-combined.

SUMMER SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS Environment Canada monitors the weather 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If a severe storm is on the way, the weather service uses the local media and Environment Canada’s Weather Radio to alert the public. There are two basic types of alerts: A Weather watch is provided when conditions are favorable for a severe storm to develop. These are usually issued early in the day. It is a good idea to pay attention to the weather and listen to the radio or TV for up-dated information. A Weather Warning means that severe weather is happening or that severe weather conditions are very likely. A thunderstorm develops in an unstable atmosphere when warm moist air near the earth’s surface rises quickly and cools. The moisture condenses to form rain droplets and dark thunder clouds. These storms are often accompanied by hail, lightning, heavy rain, high winds and tornadoes. Thunderstorms are usually over in an hour, although a series of thunderstorms can last for several hours. Lightning –During a thunderstorm the air is charged with electricity. Bolts of lightning hit the ground at about 40,000 km per second – so fast that the series of strikes hitting the ground appear as a single bolt. What To Do When There Is Lightning: 1. Estimate how far away the lightning is. Every second between the flash of lightning and the thunderclap equals a300 meters. If you count fewer than 30 seconds, take shelter immediately. 2. If indoors, stay away from windows, doors, fireplaces, radiators, sinks, bathtubs, appliances, metal pipes, telephones and other things which conduct electricity. (You can use a cell phone) 3. Unplug radios, computers and televisions. 4. Do not go to rescue the laundry on the clothesline as it conducts electricity. If outdoors, take shelter in a building, ditch or a culvert but never under a tree. 5. If caught in the open, do not lie flat but crouch in the leap frog position and lower your head. 6. Do not ride bicycles, motorcycles or golf carts or use metal tools as they conduct electricity. 7. If swimming or in a boat, get back to shore immediately. 8. If you are in a car, stay there but pull away from trees which might fall on you. 9. You may resume activity 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Tornadoes Tornadoes are violent windstorms identified by their twisting funnel- shaped cloud. They are always produced by thunderstorms, but not every thunderstorm produces a tornado. They travel between 20 to 90 km/h, are erratic and can change course suddenly. Do not chase tornadoes. Tornado Watch means the weather could develop a tornado. Tornado Warning means a tornado has been seen or it is very likely that one will develop shortly. Warning Signs of Tornadoes: • Severe thunderstorms with frequent thunder and lightning
ESTEVAN THE ENERGY CITY • An extremely dark sky sometimes highlighted by green or yellow clouds • A rumbling sound, such as a freight train or a whistling sound similar to a jet aircraft • A funnel cloud at the rear of a thunder cloud often behind a curtain of heavy rain or hail What to Do During a Tornado: If you are near a building: 1. Listen to your radio during severe thunderstorms 2. If a Tornado Warning has been issued take cover immediately. 3. Go to the basement or take shelter in a small interior ground floor room, closet or hallway. 4. Protect yourself by sitting under a heavy table or desk. 5. Stay away from windows and outside walls and doors. 6. Do not use elevators. 7. Avoid large halls, churches, arenas etc.: their roofs are more likely to collapse. 8. Stay close to the ground, protect your head and hide from flying debris. If you are driving: 1. If you are driving try to get to a nearby shelter –drive away from the tornado at a right angle. 2. Do not get caught in a car or mobile home – take shelter elsewhere. If no shelter is available, lie face down in a ditch or culvert away from the vehicle or mobile home. 3. If a tornado seems to be standing still, it is either traveling away from you or heading right for you. 4. Stay close to the ground, protect your head and hide from flying debris.zv Hail: Hail forms when updrafts in thunderclouds carry raindrops upwards into extremely cold areas and freeze layer upon layer until they are too heavy and fall to the ground Hailstones vary in size from peas to grapefruits and fall at great speed. People have been seriously injured by hailstones. What to Do When It Hails: 1. Take cover when hail begins to fall. 2. Do not go out to cover plants, cars or garden furniture or to rescue animals.
