Cheers to Fourth Street. Boy do I love driving on Fourth Street. Cheers to the next year’s school calendar for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division. There is still room for vacation without the February break.

Jeers to the sledders that break through the wire fences constructed to keep livestock in. There is a reason these fences are up. Don’t you have enough open space to ride on? You have just caused us several days work in repairs.

Jeers to the poor parking design that makes it extremely difficult for those with mobility issues. I continually hear about people not attending events or using facilities because it is too difficult for them to park and/or access certain venues. Jeers to 10-digit dialing. My fingers are burning from pressing all those buttons.

Cheers to Chad Saxon for pointing out the inconsiderate drivers on Highway 39, not necessarily highway drivers.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

Guess what I got a bath this week, I am looking good. I am a tri color Border Collie so I am pretty intelligent but I am still a puppy so I have an abundance of energy. As every puppy I have to learn my do’s and don’ts but I am sure I would catch on quickly and be the best boy ever.

My name is Blossom, I am a Shar Pei maybe retriever cross. I am a female spayed with my vaccinations. I am young and I wouldn’t mind living in town or on an acreage or farm.

My name is Memphis, I have been here a long time, I would love to have my very own home and family. I know I don’t present myself well when people come and see us but I just get too excited, I want everyone to notice me. I love going for walks, I love being sprayed down in the summer or just playing in the water, I love playing with toys. I just dream about my own family, can you give me a chance?

Our politicians can be brainless, like we are You must be this tall to run for office. The qualifications for our members of parliament and members of the legislative assembly are pretty thin. All they have to do is convince people to vote for them or belong to a perennial party winner in certain constituencies. Let’s face it, if I took over for Doreen Eagles or Ed Komarnicki, I would have a pretty good chance of becoming an overnight career politician thanks to the voters. That is a position that I am unequivocally not qualified for, but thanks to a bunch of voters who really dig the Saskatchewan Party and Conservative Party, I would have a spectacular new salary. I don’t mean to suggest only Conservative people vote for their party either. Were I to run in a Liberal or NDP stronghold wearing a red or orange tie, respectively, I would probably be chumming it up with the country’s political elite the very next day. We hold some of our MPs like our finance minister and certainly our prime minister up to higher standards than others. Some MPs who are along for the ride, which is exactly what I would be along for, can get away with some pretty subpar interest in politics. In school, I recall a professor tell-

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers ing a story about covering a provincial election. A woman won the seat and was completely dumbstruck that she was expected to set up a residence in Toronto, giving her easy access to Queen’s Park. She obviously didn’t read some fine print in her application to run for office. She may not have realized this job meant lots of hours spent in Toronto. There was some brief debate recently among some people in the office as to whether we should be expecting more from our politicians before they entered a race. Should a degree be necessary? Military service? Grade 10 completed with at least a 60 per cent average? The benchmark could be placed anywhere, but there’s really no good answer. In some ways, a minimum requirement could alienate voters. One person I spoke to was not the happiest about the idea of a 19-year-old college dropout sitting in the House of Commons, voting on policy. Our rep-

resentatives in government should be representative of us all and some of us are 19-year-old dropouts. Maybe that dropout 19-year-old can speak to issues that affect young people like post-secondary education or struggles by young people to find a job in their field. Maybe that dropout is very qualified to speak to those issues, and maybe a 65-year-old guy is more qualified to deal with those issues. I don’t know who is better at representing all of the populace, but however representative they are, I hope they more closely represent the best we have than the worst. Unfortunately none of our MPs need to be intelligent. According to the Parliament of Canada website, anybody who can vote can run for office, unless they are currently serving a penal sentence of more than two years or are senators. It seems appropriate that we treat senators the same way we treat serious criminals. We may end up with a few clueless duds in charge of the country, but it would be unacceptably unfair if we excluded members of our community from serving their country. We just have to hope that future generations consider member of Parliament to be an attractive enough job title in order to attract some leaders we don’t have to hide in the back bench.

Expect more modified crops in future Regular readers will know I am supportive of the idea of genetically modified crops. It’s not so much that I am pro-GMO, at least in as much as I believe every acre should be GMO, but from where I sit I see the technology is the best chance farmers have to stay ahead of the world’s population growth curve. I also recognize farmers have seen the benefit of GMO crops in terms of on-farm agronomics. So it was not a huge surprise when a press release arrived the other day noting that last year Canadian farmers planted close to 21 million acres of canola, more than 97 per cent of which was enhanced through biotechnology, according to a report from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA). The release said, “the majority of canola, corn and soybeans planted in Canada are biotech varieties. Canada now ranks fourth on the list of countries that plant biotech crops in terms of acres planted, up from fifth the previous year. Last year Canadian farmers

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist planted close to 29 million acres of biotech crops, which puts Canada behind only the United States, Brazil and Argentina.” It is no surprise either that corn, canola, and soybeans are the key biotech crops. They are high value crops so companies working in the biotechnology sector looked to work with them first, reasoning that farmers would be willing to take on new technology because the crops have that higher value. Agronomics played a major factor in the adoption of the GMO crops in this country, as well as the United States, Argentina and Brazil. While the aforementioned countries are all major exporters, and rely on high levels of production to do that, they are not the only countries to adopt GMO.

“In 2012, millions of farmers in 28 countries around the world planted biotech crops. The global area of biotech crops has increased 100-fold since they were first commercialized in 1996,” stated the release from CropLife Canada, the trade association representing the manufacturers, developers and distributors of plant science innovations. There has been, of course, some consumer resistance to the idea of GMO, but that is beginning to subside as the level of crops being produced in corn, canola, etc., is so high now they are difficult to avoid in the grocery store. And while initial resistance to new ideas is to be expected from consumers, milk pasteurization was not widely thought to be a good idea at one point in history. Time tends to smooth over such concerns. As we move forward, expect farmers around the world to continue to adopt GMO technology as it makes agronomic sense and affects their bottom line in a positive way, while also positioning them to meet food demands.

Without a February school break, how will students make it through?

He She He She Said

Beginning next school year, students in the South East Cornerstone Public School Division will have to sit through four weeks of classes in February. The plan to be rid of a week-long break in February is a way to find five more instructional days in the school year. As someone who never had a February break, there doesn’t appear to be much of a problem from where I sit. I remember when we went from two straight weeks of March break down to just one when I was about eight years old. There were some feelings inside me of such intense anger I’m pretty sure I just blacked out until about age 12. After that everyone forgot there ever was such a thing as a two-week break, and nobody seemed bothered by this extra week of instruction. That’s what will happen with this Cornerstone schedule change. Sure it’s nice for everyone — students, teachers and parents — to have a week off in February, but it’s probably unnecessary. Plenty of studies have shown students in our schools don’t get as much instructional time as students in other countries. At issue is more about the length of the summer than the odd week here or there elsewhere in the year, but the summer off is ingrained in our culture far too deeply to seriously look at changing that now. We want those two months off, even if it means having to relearn half of what you learned in math class the previous year. The impact may be felt even greater by those who have no school affiliation but are dying to get away from work and take their kids south. The trip to Phoenix will have to wait until March. The loss of the February break will be felt in 2014 and forgotten about by 2015. — Jordan Baker

DO THE MATH. ADVERTI S E IN THE NEW S PAPER .

I’m actually concerned for students’ health and for the health of their teachers. As a high school student, I remember working hard because I knew that eventually, once I got through my homework and finals, February offered a reprieve from the headache that is high school. Let’s face it, folks, high school doesn’t just suck because of homework and tests – it often sucks because of the people you have to see every day. Taking away a break won’t benefit students in a school system that already doesn’t punish them for being late for class and failing to turn in their assignments. I feel like students will just coast even more than they are now, and take a mental break in memory of the vacation they no longer have. Teachers are also going to be stuck facing the same mouthy brats they see all semester. No trip south. No time to visit the therapist. No time to see their own children. They’ll be stuck marking tests, making up assignments and coming up with busy-work to cover their “sick daysâ€? when they skip off for an extra long weekend. I know the Sask. government has what’s best for 9,//$*( 2) 1257+ 3257$/ students at heart. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2013

One final February away So the Marr family went on a vacation. That’s right, over the February break, my kind parents took me and my sisters to the tropical paradise that is Hawaii. What’s more, they also organized the trip to include my four fabulous grandparents – my mom’s parents, the Mores, and my dad’s parents, the Marrs. (I know it can get confusing. More and Marr are awfully similar names.) We landed on Oahu, a stunning island with a pile of lovely beaches, lots of shopping and apparently, a lot of one-way streets. These streets caused my father a great deal of stress as he attempted to navigate from our condo to various tourist attractions and restaurants. The Suburban our family rented came equipped with a very handy and efficient GPS system, but even that wasn’t enough to drown out the cacophony of eight eager back-seat drivers. Well, seven. Obviously I’m not included in this. I was stowed safely in the trunk, only piping up after I smashed my head into the back seat following a sudden stop on the freeway. Oh, and that one time I noticed we drove past our turn

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me at the airport. I swear, otherwise I was virtually silent. Whenever we did reach our destination (and we almost always did!), our inability to communicate and operate together caused some difficulty. For example, Waikiki beach has a large shopping area called the International Marketplace. Basically, it’s just 30 identical booths selling identical merchandise set up in a large square. It’s a pretty cool experience, and I bought a bunch of tourist crap that I’ll probably never use again (“How amazing is this 10-pound bottle opener in the shape of a coconut?!). Unfortunately, though we all wanted to fill our pockets with over-priced souvenirs, we struggled to do so together.

Much of our time was spent searching for one another among the over-eager salespeople, instead of working on our bartering skills. (Though I should mention that I talked a woman down an entire dollar on the tacky shirt I bought for my boyfriend. I expect he’ll wear it lots.) All-in-all, it was a fantastic trip. The sisters and I made a pact not to bicker and I feel it went exceptionally well. There were no cockroaches to be seen in either of the condos we stayed in. I barely got a sunburn and only went through one bottle of 30 SPF sunscreen. And Dad came home with most of his sanity. I was a little concerned when he seemed a bit hysterical on the first flight out of Hawaii, but I’m confident that after a week or so, and maybe a few stiff drinks, he’ll be back to normal. Thanks Dad. It was a great trip. I can’t wait until next time! Tonaya Marr knows she’s being cut off financially following convocation. She knows she won’t be taken on any more tropical vacations. Ah well, it’s been fun while it has lasted and she’s more than spoiled. To reach Tonaya for more information regarding this or any other Marr family vacation, send her an e-mail at tonaya.marr@ gmail.com or tweet her @TonayaMarr.

Weldon’s breakfast has a future The RM of Coalfields is set to ensure the breakfast program at Weldon School does not fall by the wayside. The elementary school started its breakfast program in 2010 through the Breakfast Clubs of Canada, but their contract with that organization expires at the end of this school year. While they have re-applied for funding, the school now knows they will definitely be continuing in the future thanks to a decade-long commitment from the local RM. Valerie Pelton, RM of Coalfields administrator, noted they were looking for sponsorship opportunities for their centennial year, and when they saw the school was in need of the funding, committed to a total of $60,000 over the next 10 years. The money funds food and supplies for the daily breakfast program in the school that feeds about 60 kids each day. Melissa Rensby, a member of the school’s community council, is involved in the breakfast program and said $6,000 covers the costs for an entire year of their program. The Breakfast Clubs of Canada was funding $5,000 for food, as well as $1,000 through a partnership with Minute Maid to provide juice. The Salvation Army also provides bread and cereal for the program. “It’s nice because we do have a lot of bus kids, said Rensby. “When you have to get on the bus at 7:30 in the morning, and it comes to sleeping in a little bit longer or having breakfast, most kids would probably pick sleeping in. So it’s nice when they get to school that they are able to have that breakfast. Rensby said they try to have at least three food groups each morning, with breakfasts consisting of bagels and cream cheese, a muffin with some fruit and milk, and Friday’s are usually a day for cereal. “The teachers have always done toast on Tuesdays. That’s something that they’ve always done and we’ve kept that going, added Rensby. Pelton said the RM was happy to support the program because of the effect it has on students.

“We thought that as part of our centennial celebration, we would consider a donation every year for the next 10 years to keep the program running, said Pelton. The first donation from the RM will be made at the start of the 2013-14 school year. “It’s important for all of them, she said. “We’ll continue to feed kids before school in order to build and enhance their educational experience. “It’s a huge relief knowing that is taken care of, Rensby said of the RM’s contribution over the next 10 years. She noted that they are still waiting to hear back from

Breakfast Clubs of Canada as to the status of that funding. She said they will hear back in March and if they receive funding from them as well, it would just mean they have a little extra cash to put into the program. “They didn’t have any sponsors going forward, but a lot of our children, from our ratepayers, attend school there, added Pelton. “Not every family can afford to feed their children nutritious meals everyday, and we just want to make sure that going forward, kids are able to explore their educational experience and maybe increase their educational determination and ambition later on in life because there’s a good healthy meal to start them off.

GoPro on the top of the world As a photographer, you get me started on the topic of cameras, and you might have to block off an hour or two. In the last six months in particular, the topic of the GoPro has come up a lot - three times today, in fact. I can’t say I’ve ever seen such a phenomenon for one particular camera model. Maybe in the time of my great-grandparents, when the Kodak Brownie was popularized, would we have seen a similar pattern. Everyone, and I mean everyone, either has one, has seen one, or wants one, if they do any sort of sporting or adventurous activity. What is the GoPro? It’s an inexpensive, tough as nails, waterproof camera that is small and light enough to attach to almost

anything or anyone. They are currently in their third generation of the Hero series, with three different models. If you watch almost anything on Discovery Channel, you will see GoPros in usage and their actual footage. You can recognize the video footage by its extreme wideangle appearance, where straight lines on the edge of the frame become curved. The camera itself can be spotted by its clear plastic case mounted in unusual positions. There are helmet, handlebar, suction cup, surfi ng and diving mounts, to name a few. It was invented by a surfer so that he could record his feats in the water. They are nearly indestructible, and because they only cost a few hundred

From the Top of the Pile dollars (often a fraction of the cost of the activity they are used to record), if one gets smashed, so be it. When you go to Bestbuy.ca and look up camcorders, the first thing you are shown is a GoPro. As long as you use them in daylight, they are very capable video and still cameras. I had a picture printed on metallic paper 26 inches wide for an album and it was indistinguishable in quality from my professional Nikons. Indeed, I got my Go-

“I believe SHR is the first innovation in laser hair removal in the past 10 years. We are now able to treat all skin types safely, with less pain“ Dr. Martin Braun, MD Vancouver Laser Center, Vancouver, BC, Canada “I was the girl who was fretting every time I was due for a bikini wax. It was painful and too frequent! A few of my girlfriends got the laser done and were more than impressed, so I thought I would give it a shot. It was worth it. The girls at Bell Medical were very professional and the place was warm and inviting. As for the treatment I would recommend it to anyone and everyone! It was quick and pain free. I’ve completed five treatments and the hair is almost gone! For me I consider laser hair removal as an investment and will tellFemale everyone how Bell Medical 30 -great Estevan, SKis!.

Pro Hero 2 shortly after I got my top-of-the-line Nikon D4. The D4 cost roughly 20 times what the GoPro did, yet in some ways I was more excited about the GoPro. I put it in situations where I would never dream of putting my Nikons. One guy I spoke to today uses his to film his kids racing. The second guy talked about using them to film quad racing through mud pits. Yesterday a photography podcast I listened to talked about mounting them on a tiny robotic helicopter called the Phantom. A few months ago I spoke to a rig hand

who broke a bone or two the first time he took his GoPro out stunting. I made up my own heavy-duty magnetic mount and an attached safety lanyard. I bought my GoPro with the express purpose of mounting it on the side of the block on a drilling rig and sending it 100 feet in the air, looking down. I’ve been able to do that several times, and that point of view for both video and stills has been amazing. Better yet, I’ve been able to control its functions, switching from time-lapse stills to different video modes, wirelessly using my iPhone. I can even see what it sees via the iPhone. I’ve also tried it with the suction cup attached to different parts of my truck at highway speeds. GoPro was part of the Felix Baumgartner jump, when he broke all those records last year skydiv-

ing 39 kilometres from the edge of space. He wore a GoPro in his chest pack. It’s not perfect. With very limited low-light capability, it’s next to useless indoors. I find the two-button interface for all functions maddening. I never take it anywhere without two batteries fully charged, and even then, a few times I have ended up with both of them dead for some reason. But when it works, it does so brilliantly. It will never be as ubiquitous as the Kodak Brownie, nor be anywhere as close to long lasting, but the GoPro has definitely captured its spirit. As with the Brownie, anyone can get one for cheap and take amazing picture that they never would have dreamed of before. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Conservatives looking for fraudulent EI claims National OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says Canadians travelled more for pleasure in the third quarter last year, compared with the same quarter in 2011. The agency says Canadians took 6.5 million overnight trips for pleasure outside Canada in the third quarter, up 9.9 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier. It says 5.1 million of these trips were to the United States, a 10.8 per cent increase. Canadian made 553,000 overnight business trips to the United States, down 0.2 per cent. Pleasure travel was the most common reason for overnight travel to Canada from the United States, as American residents took 2.9 million overnight pleasure trips to Canada in the third quarter, down 2.1 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier. The most common overseas destinations for overnight travel by Ca-

nadian residents were the United Kingdom, France and Italy, while the top three overseas countries of origin for visitors to Canada were the U.K., France and Germany. *** OTTAWA - Service Canada investigators have been given annual “performance objectives to find $485,000 each in fraudulent or ineligible Employment Insurance claims per year, the Conservative government confirmed Monday. However, Human Resources Minister Diane Finley vigorously denied that the targets amount to “quotas — something Finley assured the House of Commons earlier this month do not exist. “There were no quotas for individuals, Finley maintained Monday after Montreal newspaper Le Devoir published government documents that showed the annual $485,000 figure for EI investigators.

“There are objectives, targets, to be sure. There’s a big difference between the two when it comes to motivating and managing staff, said Finley. Speaking in French, Finley noted that employees who don’t reach their targets do not face “negative consequences. The Harper government is under opposition fire amid a crackdown on EI claimants that includes sending government inspectors to people’s homes and establishing annual dollar targets for EI investigators. *** CALGARY - The Conference Board of Canada has added its voice to the choir calling on Alberta to implement a provincial sales tax to offset its revenue shortfall. The Alberta government’s bottom line continues to bleed red ink due to falling oil and gas revenue. Premier Alison Redford has coined the term “bitumen bubble to refer

to the difference between the benchmark prices for oil in North America and the lower price Alberta receives for its land-locked oilsands bitumen. In the first nine months of the 2012-13 fiscal year, resource revenue in Alberta was $2.4 billion lower than expected and the previously financially flush province is now forecasting a deficit of between $3.5 billion and $4 billion. The Alberta government is promising what it calls tough but thoughtful decisions to turn the province’s fi nancial fortunes around but Redford has made it clear a provincial sales tax is not on the table. The Conference Board, an independent, non-for-profit research group that focuses on economic trends, public policy and organizational performance, says a sales tax would provide a quick fix. - Profits at U.S. banks jumped almost 37 per cent from October through December, reaching the highest level in six years as banks continued to step up lending. The figures are fresh evidence of the industry’s sustained recovery more than four years after the financial crisis. Banks earned $34.7 billion in the fourth quarter, the highest since the same period in 2006, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reported Tuesday. Sixty per cent of banks reported improved earnings from the fourth quarter of 2011, the agency said. The FDIC, created during the Great Depression to ensure bank deposits, monitors and examines the financial condition of U.S banks. For all of 2012, the agency said bank earnings rose 19 per cent to $141.3 billion, the second-highest annual level ever. *** ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A Walt White robe. Baby Holly’s pink hoodies. Sweaters worn by DEA agents trying to break up a drug smuggling ring. These are among the

items the AMC hit television series “Breaking Bad, a show about the methamphetamine wars in Albuquerque, donated to a city shelter in an effort to help the homeless — and give fans a chance to own some TV history memorabilia. New Mexico’s largest emergency shelter said the surprise gift came last week when show dropped off boxes of clothing worn by cast members from past episodes. “We got a call from someone from “Breaking Bad saying, hey, ‘we’re dropping off some clothes,’ said Joy Junction CEO Jeremy Reynalds. “Then, here they were. The donated men’s and women’s clothing will be sold at the shelter’s thrift store beginning Wednesday, with proceeds will going toward the Albuquerque-based shelter. Reynalds said he hasn’t had time to comb through all the boxes to see what was available. But he did find a burgundy-colored robe worn by Bryan Cranston. Also in the boxes were a number of baby clothes worn by the baby of the show, Holly White.

Coalers jump into semis untested The Bienfait Coalers made short work of their quarter-final round opponent, completing a best of five game series in just two games. After opening the Big Six Hockey League playoff series on Feb. 19 with a 10-2 win at home, the Coalers travelled to Carlyle for Game 2. It was another one decided by no contest, as the Coalers trounced the Cougars 14-1. A third game was scheduled for Saturday, but it was forfeited by the Cougars, so the Coalers will move on to the second round. The Coalers will face the Redvers Rockets in their semifinal series. After losing the first game of their series against

the Wawota Flyers, the Rockets came back with three straight wins. Feb. 18 saw the Rockets take control of the series when they tied it at one game apiece. Last Friday the Rockets bested the Flyers with a 4-3 win, followed up the next night with an overtime victory, another 4-3 final, to close out the series. The fifth-place ArcolaKisby Combines are also moving on to the semifinals after sweeping the fourthplace Carnduff Red Devils in three games of their quarterfinal. After a close first game, the Combines dominated their opponent with a 5-1 win at home on Feb. 20 and a 6-2 win to finish to advance on Feb. 22.

The Oxbow Huskies, who finished seventh in the regular season standings, upset the Midale Mustangs in their quarter-final series opener, but now the secondplace Mustangs have Oxbow on the ropes. Midale tied the series 1-1 with a 3-2 win on Feb. 20, followed up by a commanding 6-0 win on Feb. 25. Game 4 of the series was played Wednesday night, but results were unavailable as of press time. If necessary, Game 5 was held Thursday night. In provincial action, the Red Devils are moving on to the senior B south final against Esterhazy. The Devils closed out their series against Rocanville on Feb. 23 with a 6-2 win at home, after losing the first game 5-4. Carnduff will head to Esterhazy March 2 for the first game and the winner of the series will meet Shaunavon or Unity in the provincial final. The Mustangs’ provincial run ended last weekend. Trestman has successful trail to follow History is on football coach Marc Trestman’s side as he makes the move from Montreal to the Windy City, from Olympic Stadium to Soldier Field and from the professionalism and stability of quarterback Anthony Calvillo to the ... well, to Jay Cutler. Trestman, the highly respected coach of the Montreal Alouettes for five seasons, during which he won two Grey Cups and was a contender every year, was named head coach of the National Football League Bears in January, replacing Lovie Smith. Pressure? About 10 times greater in the NFL than the Canadian Football League. Expectations? When the coach you’re replacing is coming off a 10-win season, the expectations are close to unrealistic. Media? From perhaps a dozen media members following your team, the number will now be in the hundreds. Money? Trestman goes from being one of the highest paid coaches in the CFL in the $300,000 to $400,000 range to an average head coaching salary in the NFL - somewhere around $3 million per annum. Trestman’s arrival in Chicago is not exactly akin to moving up from a Pop Warner team. He has extensive coaching experience in the U.S., including 17 years in the NFL - the highlight being when he served as offensive co-ordinator and QB coach with the Super Bowl Oakland Raiders of 2002. As for history being on his side, we invoke the names of Blue Bombers’ legend Bud Grant and the Alouettes’ Marv Levy. Both had successful head coaching stints in the CFL and went on to NFL success, too; Grant leading the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowl titles and Levy the same number of Super Bowl appearances (without a win, however) with the Buffalo Bills. It’s fitting that Trestman, the author of a book titled

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist Perseverance: Life Lessons on Leadership and Teamwork, would rely so heavily on perseverance to finally achieve his goal of becoming a head coach at the highest level of the game. Now, if the “leadershipâ€? and “teamworkâ€? parts also work out, there could be some “superâ€? times in the years ahead around Chicago. • Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “President Obama played 18 holes with Tiger Woods. Swap croutons with nuts Croutons can be high in fat and calories so try adding crunch to your salad with nuts - which are high in unsaturated fats similar to those found in olive oil - walnuts and pecans complement fruity dressings, while pine nuts and hazelnuts pair well with savoury dressings.

Swap salt with herbs Swap rice with quinoa “Try using fresh or dry herbs to add flavour to dishes rather than salt, recommends Tina Stewart, Registered Dietitian, Product Development, Loblaw Companies Limited,“Not only is it a healthier alternative, but using a variety of herbs keeps dishes from being too repetitive.

The importance of nasal health during the winter months (NC)—Every year, Canadians brace themselves for winter. They often find ways to distract themselves from the cold weather and opt for winter sports that balance fun and fitness. In fact, seasoned winter athletes have a deep understanding of the importance of nasal health during the winter months. When we breathe normally, the nasal passage warms and humidifies the inhaled air, which would ensure that the air we breathe is at body temperature and almost at 100% relative humidity. During a sport such as cross-country skiing for example, an athlete's breathing rate can increase up to six times. When breathing is

that fast, the nasal airway is no longer capable of meeting the demand to warm and humidify the inhaled air. This additional flow of cold, dry air bypasses the nasal airway's normal conditioning mechanisms, considerably increasing the dehydrating effect of the nose. As Alex Harvey, Canadian cross-country skiing Gold Medalist at the Oslo World Championships, said: “In order to perform cross-country skiing at an elite level, we must be able to breathe well. A heavy exposure to inspired cold air can increase nasal dryness and induce airway inflammation. Alex went on to explain, “I use nasal irrigation products, such as hydraSense morning and night to ensure that my nose is

<RXU /LYH :HOO 3KDUPDFLVW LV DOZD\V WKHUH IRU \RX

properly hydrated at all times. In fact, professional athletes aren't the only ones who can benefit from proper breathing. The body is designed so that the muscles responsible for breathing and the heart take priority for oxygenated blood over limb muscles, meaning the rest of the body – legs and arms – will be the first to “go causing premature fatigue. Therefore, even for the most amateur of winter sport athletes, whether it be for outdoor hockey, skiing or snow shoeing, proper breathing is essential for ultimate performance and in the end, for proper health.

Dickey’s catcher uncertainty until after WBC National DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Toronto Blue Jays will decide who catches knuckleballer R.A. Dickey after the World Baseball Classic, says manager John Gibbons. Incumbent J.P. Arencibia has insisted he wants to handle Dickey this season although the Jays have three catchers in camp — Henry Blanco, Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas — who have experience in working with Dickey. Arencibia, who worked out with Dickey over the winter in their off-season home of Nashville, caught

Dickey in his spring debut Monday. Both are eventually headed to the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. “When they come back, we’ve got to make a decision one way or another, Gibbons said Tuesday. “If he’s the guy or we’re going to go with one of the other guys. “Because that individual, whoever it is, he’s got to work him the rest of the way. *** TORONTO - Toronto FC captain Torsten Frings has announced his retirement after 18 seasons.

The 36-year-old former German international was coming back from hip surgery that cut short his MLS season last September. He made one pre-season appearance as a substitute earlier this month before leaving camp to attend to what the MLS club called a personal issue. That now appears to have been his future. “During pre-season we discovered that my recovery would take longer than expected. I always want to do what’s best for the team and that is why I have decided to step away, Frings said in

a statement Tuesday ahead of a club news conference. “I really enjoyed my time in Toronto and playing for Toronto FC. I wish the club all the best this season and hopefully they can continue to embrace the winning spirit that I brought to the team. When healthy, Frings was a commanding player for Toronto albeit one slightly diminished by age. But injuries robbed him of playing time and the struggling MLS franchise failed to surround him with talent during his one and a half seasons with the club.

International NAPLES, Italy - Diego Maradona has issued a verbal appeal to Italian authorities to clear his name in a tax evasion case, even offering to meet with the country’s president. “I didn’t kill anyone, the Argentine great said Tuesday at a news conference, surrounded by his lawyers and bodyguards. “I’m here to seek justice.

Maradona’s Italian debts of nearly â‚Ź40 million (more than $50 million) stem from supposed unpaid taxes during the time he played for Napoli from 1984-91, a period in which he helped the club win its only two Serie A titles. Maradona said Napoli club officials were responsible for his playing contract with the team. “Why do I have to pay and not them?â€? he said. “I’m a victim because I earned a lot but I didn’t know anything about contractual questions. I’m showing my face because I didn’t kill anyone. “If (Italian) President (Giorgio) Napolitano wants to speak with me, I’ll explain everything to him,â€? Maradona added. *** Tom Brady will be a Patriot until he is 40 years old. Brady agreed to a threeyear contract extension with New England on Monday, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press. The extension is worth about $27 million and will free up nearly $15 million in salary cap room for the team, which has several younger players it needs to re-sign or negotiate new deals with. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the extension has not been announced. Sports Illustrated first reported the extension. The 35-year-old twotime league MVP was signed through 2014, and has said he wants to play at least five more years. A three-time Super Bowl champion, Brady will make far less in those three seasons than the going rate for star quarterbacks. Brady currently has a four-year, $72 million deal with $48 million guaranteed.

*** DUNEDIN, Fla. - Unlike Russell Martin, first baseman Justin Morneau says he’s willing to play anywhere for Canada at the World Baseball Classic. “I’ll be happy to DH, wherever they need me, I’ll do it, said the Minnesota Twins star from New Westminster, B.C. Martin, a catcher from Chelsea, Que., who signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates over the off-season, said Sunday he wouldn’t be part of the Canadian team because he couldn’t play shortstop. Martin, citing wear and tear, said he didn’t watch to catch and both the Pirates and Canada were uncomfortable with him switching positions. “He’s an established major-league hitter who’s had some success so we’re obviously going to miss him, Morneau said before playing the Jays on Tuesday in spring training action. “But we’re going to have someone there who wants to be there, who’s going to be honoured to put the jersey on and be part of it. Whoever’s there is going to find a way to get it done. Morneau said the news is better for Canada on Cincinnati star Joey Votto, who texted him a few days ago to say “everything’s going good.

Life is still good without an appendix

Everything went fine, and he recovered quickly. My wife and I have a few questions. Could he have eaten something that caused appendicitis? What does not having an appendix do to people? No one in my wife’s or my family has had such an operation. We’re ignorant about all this. -- G.G.

The appendix has a hollow core, which is lined with lymphoid tissue, the same kind of tissue found in lymph nodes. Bacteria from the colon can invade the hollow core and cause the lymph tissue to swell. Swelling cuts off blood supply, and the appendix begins to disintegrate -appendicitis. Undigested food or hard fecal material also can block the appendix’s core and lead to the same situation. Nothing your son ate is likely the cause. All the other campers ate the same food, but he was the only one to develop this problem. The pain of appendicitis most often starts in the area of the navel (bellybutton) and works its way toward the lowerright corner of the abdo-

ANSWER: The appendix dangles from the first part of the colon in the lower-right side of the abdomen. It looks like a slender worm, and has an average length of 3 inches (8 cm). The function of the appendix isn’t clearly defined, but it might have a role in body immunity. Life without an appendix goes on as normally as life with one.

men. Temperature rises. Vomiting is common, and sometimes diarrhea is part of the picture. A doctor, by what he or she hears from the patient, along with the examination of the abdomen, usually can make the diagnosis. In confusing circumstances, an ultrasound is most helpful. Millions of people worldwide live without an appendix. They do quite well. So will your son. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can hand sanitizer kill all harmful bacteria? -- D.D. ANSWER: By “hand sanitizer, do you mean waterless hand cleaners? Most of them incorporate ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. They kill many

bacteria, but not all harmful ones. Nothing short of sterilization does that. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water for 20 seconds is an effective way of eliminating many germs, including cold and flu viruses. You don’t have to use soap that has antibacterial agents in it. The water doesn’t have to be hot; cool water is fine. Dry your hands with a paper, disposable towel, and turn off the faucets in a public restroom with a paper towel. *** DEAR DR. You’ll never go wrong taking medicine with water. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.
